Determine a topic and develop specific questions At the school that I work at reading classes are only required in sixth grade. In seventh and eighth
grade reading classes can be taken as an elective class. I strongly feel that all students in middle school still need guidance and continuous practice
with reading comprehension and critical thinking skills. Students who are beyond a sixth grade reading class are not getting these reading skills that

incorporate co–teaching. "Research indicates that reading comprehension strategies should be explicitly taught and modeled at all grade levels"
(Moreillon, Judi, 2008) This part of the article will be beneficial to defend my thoughts that all students in the middle school level need reading

Technology literacy plays a significant role in students learning. It is therefore crucial for educators to incorporate learning lessons and techniques that

Introduction The nonprofit organization that I chose to conduct research on is called the Lighthouse. The Lighthouse is an after school program for
middle and high school students. I decided to research this organization because I have had a few friends volunteer there and I have heard nothing but
positive comments about it. I really wanted find out more about the Lighthouse because from the little that I already knew about it, I felt that it

Although there is evidence that proves boys' underachievement in reading and writing in contrast to girls', it is important to first note that there are
sources that identify boys being less committed to school than girls, but why is this? A significant aspect is boys' attitude to school and examinations.
Weis (1990) effectively argues that the majority of boys are not concerned with excelling inschool, but only with passing. This evidence strongly
suggests that boys' attitude to education is significantly lower than girls due to only requiring to pass exams instead of exceeding their limitations and
reaching their full potential. A positive attitude to education is essential to ensure all pupils obtain higher than satisfactory academic achievements,

Throughout this fall semester, as a Preservice Middle Level Educator, I have been observing and engaging in Ms. Mahdi's 7th grade Science class. It
is at this placement that I have collected artifacts for a portfolio to illustrate a competency and achievement related to the Association for Middle Level
Education standards. In this portfolio summary you will find various artifacts that help demonstrate these AMLE standards. The AMLE standards as a
whole, cover academic growth and set an expectation for middle school teachers to be mindful that their middle school students are continuously
experiencing social and cognitive changes that should be addressed thoughtfully, just as much as their academic needs.
The first artifact I included was a sample of student work where the students were asked to fill out a survey to verify and understand their learning styles
. This artifact was introduced with some history and with an emphasis on how important it is for students to know and understand their own learning
styles. After a discussion on the importance of 'knowing thyself' the students graded and scored their learning style preferences. Next followed a
discussion on the various types of learning styles and ways students could incorporate their preferred learning styles when doing homework, classwork,
and studying for assessments. This artifact is a good example of how Standard 4: Element b., Middle Level Instructional Strategies, can be applied

An Explosive Acquisition Of Language
As my almost two–year–old embarks upon her first meaningful conversations with us, I am reminded how important language and words are to
each of us. Harper has only recently begun to proudly announce her name as she enters a room, counting to four, and identifying shapes in board
books. Anything that is green is a frog, and anything that is furry is, of course, a dog. Her enthusiasm and delightful squeals when she has
discovered a new word are mesmeric. Her brow furls as she processes and realizes that she, in fact, understands a new concept that did not exist in her
world until 0.25 seconds prior. An explosive acquisition of language is allowing her to embrace the world in ways that had previously been
inaccessible to her.
Being almost two also seems overwhelming. When my sweet yet determined little lady does not have words to communicate her thoughts or her
present needs at a given moment, she immediately becomes frustrated, distraught, or downright upset. Again, her brow crinkles up in a desperate
attempt to make sense of her surroundings. This level of frustration often results in tears and necessitates a hug, which I secretly slightly enjoy (She
'll only cuddle for so long). Her tears, however, also remind me to pause and consider the feelings of all those who feel as if they do not have a voice.

The teacher provided the children to identify some letters in the print but does not provide opportunity for all the children to become engaged in the
activity. The teacher did take some opportunity to draw the childrens attention to the sounds in words but the children were not motivated to complete
the activity. The activity seemed rushed and the children seemed to think the activity was drawn out. Some other activities that were observed in the
classroom seemed to promote letter recognition. Children were encouraged to identify letters on their mat and match them to their lower–case letters.
Although the activity had a goal in mind there was no opportunity for the children to discuss and there was little opportunity for the activity to be
extended. Another activity available was a drawing activity where the children were able to draw a picture of their favorite animalsThe teacher shared
that they can use their mouths and lips to say each word to help them identify the beginning letter sounds. After discussing with the teacher the
activities in the classroom she shared that she has been incorporating an abundance of fine motor skill activities and has found that language activities

In seventh and eighth grade reading classes can be taken as an elective class. I strongly feel that all students in middle school still need guidance and continuous practice with reading comprehension and critical thinking skills. Students who are beyond a sixth grade reading class are not getting these reading skills that can be applied in all other academic classes. As a teacher I can not change the fact that the school principal has decided that students in seventh and eighth grade are not required to take a reading class. "Research indicates that reading comprehension strategies should be explicitly taught and modeled at all grade levels" (Moreillon, Judi, 2008) This part of the article will be beneficial to defend my thoughts that all students in the middle school level need reading comprehension and critical thinking skills.
