Significant characters and brief statement of function in the work:
Name: Function:
1. Pony boy Curtis– The narrator of the story. Ponyboy's love for literature and academics make him
different from the rest of the gang. He's also the youngest. Because his parents died in a car
accident, Ponyboy lives with his brothers. His oldest brother accuses him of lacking common sense
but, ponyboy is a reliable and observant character.
2. Sodapop Curtis– Ponyboy 's 16–going–on–17–year–old brother. He is a high school dropout and

Two–Bit Matthews–The joker of Ponyboy's group. Two–Bit, whose real name is Keith, is a
wisecracking greaser who regularly shoplifts. He prizes his sleek black–handled switchblade.
Significant settings and a brief statement
Ponyboy leaves us with a vague description of the town where the story takes place.
Eastside, Westside: Eastside is the poor side of town and Westside is Soc side of town with
wealthier people.
The church: The church is smack dab in the middle of that pastoral setting, situated at the top of a
hill. Pony and Johnny can feast their eyes on the countryside stretching out beneath them. Yet, they
're still isolated and outside of society, just like this church. It presents a gloomy contrast to the
brightness of nature around them. Ponyboy has stopped going to church because the gang
misbehaves in the church. Drive–in Movie: The gang all sneak into the local drive in movie this is
an important place. Ponyboy meets cherry valance at this point.
Brief summary of key plot elements: Plot consists of six parts: (1) exposition, (2) intro. Conflict, (3)
rising action, (4) climax, (5) falling action, (6) resolution
Brief description of author's style: variety of spice and styles: Hinton has a well–stocked writer 's
toolbox. She knows that mixing things up will help keep us from getting bored. She foreshadows a
good bit because the narrator ponyboy is

Chaos In The Outsiders, By S. E. Hinton
Outsiders Connection In the book, The Outsiders, the author, S.E Hinton ingrains that social class
causes chaos. Ponyboy leaves home enraged and stunned after his brother Darry slaps him across
the face. Ponyboy meets up with his friend Johnny with a plan to "run away." The plan falls through
and the two end up at the park face to face with the Socs–– the same Socs that jumped Johnny. In a
point to save Ponyboy from death Johnny kills Bob, one of the main Socs of the group. While
Ponyboy stares at Bob, he thinks , "Bob, the handsome Soc, was lying there in the moonlight,
doubled up and still. A dark pool was growing from him, spreading slowly over the blue–white
cement" (56). In this passage, S.E Hinton supports the idea that social class causes chaos. Since
Johnny and Ponyboy are in a lower social class than the Socs, the Socs think that they can take
advantage of the greasers by jumping them and harming them. Johnny and Pony have been Jumped
before and this time when someone's life is on the line it can cause a bad chain of events starting
with Johnny killing Bob, the Soc. Once again, S.E Hinton establishes that social class causes chaos
in one's life. Johnny and Pony come home after ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In this quotation, Hinton again proves that social class causes chaos. Since Johnny and Ponyboy are
not as wealthy as the Socs and do not live in a neighborhood as nice, the reporters are lead to
believe that they are "hoods." People that are not capable of doing anything good for the world, just
bad. So, when Johnny and Ponyboy commit a heroic act everyone is stunned because they did not
think that "hoods" could do good. That is is what lead them to the conclusion that Johnny and
Ponyboy, "turned heroes." Which is chaotic for Johnny and Ponyboy because people do not
understand that not all greasers are bad they just did not have a chance to show the good in

Johnny In The Outsiders By S. E. Hinton
The author of The Outsiders S.E. Hinton wrote Johnny and Dally as complete opposites. Johnny is
made out to be a quiet, timid sixteen year old boy who has a bad home life. And Dally is known as
the outspoken leader that is tough as nails. Ponyboys relationship with Johnny is completely
different than the relationship he has with Dally. Ponyboy loves and cares for Johnny's wellbeing,
and Johnny is someone Ponyboy can be open with. Dally is intimidating to Ponyboy and he doesn't
really care for the way he lives his life. Dally plays the role of a "greaser" extremely well, he loves a
fight and to get into mindless trouble. In the book Ponyboy said, "He had been arrested, he got
drunk, he rode in rodeos, lied, cheated, stole, rolled drunks, jumped small kids ––– he did
everything." The gang sees him as a leader figure because he is the toughest and meanest person
they know. Johnny on the other hand, despite being labeled as a "greaser", does not act like one.
After getting a severe beating from a group of "socs" and living with abusive parents, Johnny has
become fragile and timid. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The extent as to how much Dally cares for Johnny is not revealed until Johnny passes away, but it's
made clear that Johnny idolizes Dally. After the rumble Dally and Ponyboy go to the hospital to see
Johnny, who is not doing too well. Sadly he passes away and Dally crumbles under the grief. This
quote made it clear that Dally loved Johnny very deeply, "Whirling suddenly, he slammed back
against the wall. His face contracted in agony, and sweat streamed down his face." Dally's actions
after Johnny's death were unexpected because he ditched Ponyboy, robbed a store, went on the run
from the police, and called the gang for help making a getaway. The police had surrounded Dally
before the gang could get to him and they watched as he pulled a gun and was shot on the spot. The
loss of Johnny literally killed

Loyalty In The Outsiders By S. E. Hinton
The Outsiders is a thrilling novel that is a heart racing drama that will keep audiences reading all
day. S.E. Hinton is an author of many award winning books and she definitely knows how to
capture the heart of readers with theme and mood constantly changing throughout the characters.
This stimulating story is a classic novel that teaches lessons of discrimination, the need to belong,
and the conflict against the protagonist. The town is separated between two groups and the gang of
friends are constantly in trouble and trying to make it through their day. The book is full of trust and
depending on one another. The Outsiders is truly a novel that entices the reader to keep ripping
through the pages as love, death, and heroism take up the pages. ... Show more content on

What loyalty has provided in both novels is how certain characters are experiencing the same kind
of loyalty and have similar reactions. For example, when Dally was being loyal to Johnny by
shooting himself after he dies, that was a more extreme version of how Gutta reacted. When she
found out Talon was "dead," she was heart–broken and could not stop crying. Death in both stories
created similar reactions between two characters who are both loyal. Within both books, loyalty is a
lesson that is carried out in each chapter. However, there are also differences in both novels. In The
Outsiders, loyalty teaches how trust is crucial in friends and how that helps them move on with their
life. In Downsiders, loyalty teaches how to love one another and what it means to take care of
eachother. For example, at the hospital Dally states, "Oh, damnit, Johnny, don't die, please don't
die..." then bolted out the door. That shows that Dally was frustrated and heartbroken and that was
loyalty because Dally did not want Johnny to leave. GIVE QUOTE FOR DOWNSIDERS THAT IS

The Outsiders By S. E. Hinton
Has anyone ever been deeply devastated? A big and beyond compare pain. What if it was something
that could change the way someone would look at life? Imagine the very worst happening. The
people someone would love gone, in this case, parents. In the novel entitled The Outsiders, by S. E.
Hinton, she walks the reader through the experiences of a fourteen year old boy and his six lifelong
friends who call themselves the "Greasers." Along the way Ponyboy Curtis, the youngest greaser,
finds himself in a touchy situation that may place him in a boys home. Ponyboy should not be
placed in a boys home because he has loving brothers who care for him, support him, and he also
takes honor classes and does significantly in school. To begin with, Darry and Sodapop are Pony's
older brothers. They both have a very strong and loving bond with him. Is Darry a good enough
guardian or not? Their actions towards him are affectionate and warmhearted. "I don't know if you
ought to be in this rumble, Ponyboy"... "You fight real good for a kid your size. But you were in
shape before. You've lost weight and you don't look so great, kid. You're tensed up to much."
(Hinton, 133–134) As shown above, Darry

Heroism In The Outsiders, By S. E. Hinton
In the book The Outsiders, written by S. E. Hinton, the narrator, Ponyboy, talks about his life as a
poor person and the fights, rich against the poor. The novel focused on how the rich and the poor
people did not understand each other. According to Ponyboy this led in the two groups to hate each
other. The three topics addressed in the engaging novel are the fight between rich and poor, the
power of friendship, and what defines heroism. To begin with, the fight between the rich and poor is
a large theme in the book The Outsiders. When Ponyboy got jumped he thought, "It occurred to me
that they could kill me," (5) This shows that since Ponyboy was a greaser, the Socs jumped him and
could have killed him. This also shows that the Socs did not care whether they killed him or not.
Bob also said, "You know what a greaser is? White trash with long hair" (55). This showed that the
Socs thought of themselves higher than others. This also shows how the Socs did not show any
sympathy with the greasers. This shows how the rich and the poor fought because of their
differences. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Early on, Ponyboy stated, ". . . organized gangs are a rarities–– there are just small bunches of
friends who stick together." (11). This is important because it shows how friendship bonded their
small "gang" and how the gang helped each other. This also shows how the gang relies upon each
other to keep alive. Ponyboy also said,". . . had been part of our gang and we wouldn't desert him."
(169). This shows that the gang was so close that even when one of them died, they would still stand
up for them. This is an important fact because without each other, they would fall apart like
Ponyboy did. This shows the power of friendship and how it bonded together the

Violence In The Outsiders By S. E. Hinton
In the novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton shows that fights create more violence and can even lead
to tragedy. The narrator Ponyboy, a greaser was scared for when Johnny got jumped Ponyboy
reflected on his feelings in chapter 1, "I had never been jumped, but I had seen Johnny after the after
four Socs got hold of him, and it wasn't pretty. Johnny was scared of his own shadow after that. He
was sixteen then." (Hinton 4) This quote is an example that fights and violence can lead to tragedy
because after Johnny had been jumped by the Socs he was terrified and scared of his own shadow.
He had to start walking with a group of people. This also happened at an early age so Johnny was
scared after a while, " he was scared of his own shadow after he got jumped" This scene had me
thinking about Johnny in the beginning of the book because he was only young and was just
walking home and was jumped and attacked by four people scaring him for the rest of the book. ...

I fought, but the hand at the back of my neck was strong and I had to hold my breathe. I'm dying, I
thought. The next thing I knew I was laying on the pavement beside the fountain, coughing water
and gasping, I lay there weakly." (56) This quote is an example of violence because he was being
attacked and there was fighting, which lead to an event in the next quote showing how it lead to
tragedy because Bob was slowly dying. And eventually died. It also shows how they were fighting
and then lead to a big cause where he had died because of the violence that was happening to

Dally As A Hero In The Outsiders By S. E. Hinton
In the book The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton, the main character Dally can be viewed as a hero or a
failure. The story introduced many different characters and different events that took place. Some of
these events were good, and some were bad. One good event was them beating the Socs in the
battle. A bad event was Dally committing suicide. Some people believe that he died a hero and some
believe that he died as a failure. I believe that he died a hero for several reasons that include how he
watched over his family and people he cared about, how he tried to save Johnie from the fire, and
how he was able to save Ponyboy from the fire.
One reason why some people think Dally died a hero is because he watched over his family and the
people he cared about. He would make sure that everyone was home at night. He wanted to make
sure that everyone was safe and tried to make sure that no one got hurt. If anyone was hurt, he
would help them. If someone did not get home by night time, he would look for them. Once they
had come home, he would tell them not to do that ever again for it worried him. He was like their
guardian. Sure, sometimes he could be rude and upset, but deep down inside he was like their father.

This shows that Dally was extremely brave and cared a lot about his friends. The church was
burning constantly and was getting weaker. At anytime, the entire building could have collapsed on
both of them, and they would have both died right there. Right after they both came out, the church
fell and there were a couple explosions. This shows that if Dally would have in there anytime later,
he would have been dead. He knew this, but he still went in to save Johnie. Even if it meant him
dying. Some people might not have done what Dally did because they would be afraid of killing
themselves. Dally was not one of these

Stereotypes In The Outsiders By S. E. Hinton
Imagine this– you are poor, wear hair grease, and can't afford nice clothes. Everyone you know,
besides your closest friends, thinks that you are an evil criminal, but you in fact are are very kind
person. How would you feel? The Outsiders by S.E Hinton addresses this problem head–on as you
follow Ponyboy as he battles stereotypes against his friends and himself. The theme of this book is
to never judge a book by it's cover which is demonstrated through the two main groups: the Soc's
and the Greaser's. It is also demonstrated through another character who is the group of Soc's but is
a spy for the Greasers, Cherry Valance. One of the groups that are mentioned in the book Outsiders
are the Greasers. The Greasers are the ruffians of the city ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

"We're gonna do you a favor, greaser. We're gonna cut off all that long greasy hair off."." This means
that despite the Soc's high class they can be downright nasty. It is also said in the book that they
drink alcohol, smoke, and like to pick on less wealthy students at the school. What most Soc's
actually do is of a stereotype of a Greaser. An example of this could be certain celebrities or athletes.
They are prominent and seen as role models to this generation. However, some do decide to do bad
things such as drugs. This has to do with the Soc's because they do terrible things to the Greasers.
Celebrities tend to get involved in drama with other celebrities whether it be career–related or not.

Stereotypes In The Outsiders By S. E. Hinton
The novel and movie The Outsiders, written by S.E. Hinton, is about a boy, Ponyboy Curtis, and his
struggles. Hinton writes about two gangs: the Socs and greasers. Ponyboy is labeled a greaser
because of his lack of wealth and popularity. When his friend, Johnny, murders a Soc to save
Ponyboy's life, they flee from town and hide in an abandoned church. This event brings many
stereotypes that greasers are cruel people and hoods. There are many themes in The Outsiders by
S.E. Hinton, although one is stronger than the rest: injustice is caused by money, status, and
circumstance. Due to a lack of money, Ponyboy and his family were greasers. As Ponyboy stated to
Cherry, who was a rich Soc, "...maybe it was money that separated us" (Hinton 38).

Loyalty In The Outsiders By S. E. Hinton
"The silence grew heavier, and I could hear the harsh heavy breathing of the boys around me. Still
Darry and the Soc walked slowly in a circle" (Hinton, 143). The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton is a
realistic fiction novel taking place in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1966. The story informs the reader of a
rivalry between two gangs, the Socials (Socs) who are the rich people that have nice cars, clothes,
and have a bright future ahead of them. The Socs live on the West side. The Greasers are the other
gang who weren't rich, weren't known to have bright futures and always had grease in their hair,
hence the name Greasers. Throughout the story many themes have been applied to our society today.
Two themes that I have chosen were that loyalty is a thread that holds people together and to not
judge people based on how society labels them.
Being loyal is to have a strong feeling of support or allegiance for someone or something.
In The Outsiders, Ponyboy and all the other Greasers had to assist each other in order not to get
pushed around by the Socs. An example of loyalty involves Ponyboy, Sodapop, and Darry, "Since
Mom and Dad were killed in an auto wreck, the three of us get to stay together only as long as we
behave. So Soda and I stay out of trouble as much as we can" (Hinton, 3). This quote shows how the
Curtis boys had to be more trustworthy and dependable to each other since their parents died or if
not, they would have to be separated. Another loyalty quote I found says, "You take up

Book Report On The Outsiders By S. E. Hinton
The outsiders, written by S. E. Hinton, is a story about a group of friends and family, from the
perspective of ponyboy, who struggle with being a Greaser living with many problems. Greasers are
a group of people who live on the west side, where they aren't treated the best and basically live in
the slums. Most of the greasers are considered hoodlums and crooks, while they steal cigarettes
from tasty freezes. Greasers normally wear black leather jackets over their white shirts and blue
jeans, they slick their hair back with tons of grease to keep it back. That is after all where they got
their name. The greasers get picked on by the Socs, they are considered the wealthy, spoiled rich
kids who wear Madras shirts and khakis. They normally come

Hardship In The Outsiders By S. E. Hinton
The Outsiders was written by S.E. Hinton. The book was written in 1967. The Outsiders take place
during the 1960s. The book is about Ponyboy and his gang. They are greasers and going up against
the Socs from the west side. The theme of The Outsiders is hardships can happen to anyone, no
matter what kind of person they are. An example of a hardship is when Johnny dies. "Stay gold,
Ponyboy. Stay gold... The pillow seemed to sink a little, and Johnny died" (Hinton 148). This shows
when Johnny died and Ponyboy was there with him. Ponyboy had become very close to Johnny
during their time up in the old church in Windrixville. Another example is when Dally died. "He
was jerked half around by the impact of the bullet, then slowly crumpled with a look

The Sociological Themes In The Outsiders, By S. E. Hinton
Many people are familiar with the works of S. E. Hinton, although they are unaware of it. Her
greatest work, one of which many high schoolers read today, is The Outsiders. This book for young
adults has gotten much praise and love by many people, young and old, and will continue to
enlighten the hearts of those who read it. Within this novel, and the movie that followed afterwards,
many prominent themes of sociology are shown. One would have to be blind not to see how the
social groups and other sociological themes relate to this masterpiece. Of all of the themes that the
movie glosses over, ingroups and outgroups, deviant behavior, and group conformity are the themes
that most relate with the real world, outside of the pages and scenes of these works. ... Show more

An easy way to remember what an in or outgroup is to think of an ingroup as being the group of
people that you are in touch with, and an outgroup as a group that you are out of touch with. For
example, and in relation to these works, from a Greaser's perspective, the Socials are an outgroup
and other fellow Greasers are an ingroup. The opposite is true for Socials. There are also deeper sets
of groups within each group, such as Ponyboy being a part of an ingroup with his family members
and other close friends, and the Greasers that aren't close being an outgroup. As one can see, there
are definite themes of in and outgroups, and that in and outgroups may have more than one in and
outgroup within each

Violence In The Outsiders By S. E. Hinton
In 1966, if you lived in Tulsa, Oklahoma you would either be a Soc or a Greaser. The book "The
Outsiders" by S.E. Hinton, revolves around a town that has two sides, the west and east side. These
two sides have two groups called the Greasers and the Socs. The Greasers live on the east side of
town and the Socs live on the west side. The Greasers have less money and don't have the nicest
houses while the Socs have nice houses and have more money to spend. People think that the Socs
are the good guys because they dress nice and don't cause problems in the community. Throughout
the book, there were many themes addressed but the two themes that stood out the most were
violence between the Socs and the Greasers and both groups feeling isolated from ... Show more

Violence is shown in this book by having rumbles between the Socs and the Greasers. Rumbles are
usually a gathering of both the Socs and the Greasers and would fight to try to prove which group
was superior of the other. For example, "While he was prying my fingers loose, Dally knocked him
backward, so that all three of us rolled on the ground, gasping, cussing, and punching" (Hinton pg.
144). This shows how quickly violence can escalate during a rumble. In the quote you can see how
the violence was at first with two people but then quickly grew and involved other people. Many of
the participants in the rumble ended up getting serious injuries. For instance, "We found out later
Steve had three broken ribs" (Hinton pg. 145). This explains that the violence of the rumble caused
severe injuries because in the quote Steve had broken bones and they feel the need to hurt other
people because they are trying to cope with their own feelings. In conclusion, usually violence
comes from a deeper issue of there personal life. This is known as Isolation. Isolation is a complete
separation from others of a person suffering with whatever they have holding inside

The Book 'The Outsiders' By S. E. Hinton
The book outsiders by S.E Hinton is action–packed and breathtaking. The theme leaves off a very
powerful message as well. The author makes me believe that one of the biggest themes would be,
money doesn't make who you are. These are the three quotes that support my decision. My first
quote is when Randy was in the car talking to Ponyboy; '" Greaser didn't have anything to do with it.
My buddy over there wouldn't of done it. Maybe you would have done the same thing, maybe a
friend of yours wouldn't have. It's the individual'" ( Hinton 115 ). The reason why I picked this quote
is because, Randy's buddy is a Soc who has a lot of money. When Randy was saying this he meant
that no matter what the social class and how much money someone had they most likely wouldn't of
done it. This means that Ponyboy was really brave and did the right thing even though he is a
greaser. Which is not very common since society has it in people's minds that greasers are bad and
don't do the right thing. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is a quote about what Ponyboy was thinking in his head. "No, it wasn't cherry the soc who was
helping us, it was cherry the dreamer who watched sunsets and couldn't stand fights." ( Hinton 86 ).
This is why I used this quote. At that time Ponyboy wasn't classifying Cherry as a Soc but instead
was thinking of her more highly and just a normal person like him. Which is unusual since in their
society since Socs were higher class, but the author was trying to make it clear in this sentence that
it wasn't the

Summary Of The Novel 'The Outsiders' By S. E. Hinton
The novel, The Outsiders was written by S. E. Hinton, it was first published in 1967 by Viking
Press. Hinton was 15 when she started writing the novel, but did most of the work when she was 16
and a junior in high school. Hinton was 18 when the book was published. The book follows two
rival groups, the Greasers and the Socs, who are divided by their socioeconomic status. The story is
told in first–person narrative by protagonist Ponyboy Curtis. One of the main, eye catching
characters is Ponyboy. Ponyboy is a 14 year old boy. He is humble, confused and lacking common
sense. One of the characteristics of Ponyboy is that he is humble. He does not regress or lower
himself in order to be popular or successful. He is himself, and this allows him to be special. In one
instance, Ponyboy cause a Socs to retreat by pointing a broken piece of glass at them. While some
might see this as an extraordinary act of bravery, especially considering Ponyboy's injuries, he is
humble about the act. He says impressively that, "anyone else could have done the same thing." This

Identity Development : The Outsiders By S. E. Hinton
Ben Cooke November 18, 2014 PSYC 410 Fall 2014 Identity Development in The Outsiders by S.
E. Hinton Introduction Throughout the events that take place in S.E. Hinton's The Outsiders
Ponyboy Curtis experiences an identity crisis and three of the four identity statuses. At the very end
of the book he shows signs that he is beginning to resolve his identity crisis in a more positive way,
but it is not shown. Identity development is one of the most crucial stages of adolescence. Failure to
fully resolve the adolescent identity crisis can have both short and long term consequences. In the
case of Ponyboy, his lack of resolution to the identity crisis led to problems in school and with his
family. A persons' identity is the self–definition of who and what they are. It is based on the sum of
persons' life experiences and is comprised of their self–conceptions, self–esteem, socioeconomic
status, life chances, and personality factors. All of these parts can come together during the identity
crisis to form a stable and healthy identity. Components of identity The first component of an
identity is persons' self–conceptions. Self–conceptions are someone's own opinions about their
abilities and attributes. It also incorporates and internalizes outside information about that person.
An adolescent may describe themselves as pretty, or intelligent, or awkward if they have been in
numerous situations that made them feel that way. These self–conceptions will change and diversify

The outsiders Essay Theme: violence In the novel "The Outsiders," author S.E Hinton hints to the
reader that there are a lot of choices within the book from beginning to the end. From the East side
with the rich, cruel and mean Socs to the West side of town with the Greasers where Ponyboy and
the gang live. The gang must choose to save their friends despite the consequences, they must turn
to each other for help, and they must decide to return home in order to face what they have done and
the damage that has occurred. These choices though hard, help the Greasers learn about themselves
and the kind of people they want to be. Many of the characters in "The Outsiders" have to make
hard decisions during the chapters of the book; from Johnny fatally stabbing Bob, to Darry and
Ponyboy deciding to chase after Soda, or just deciding what drink to get at the movies all are
important. "It's not my idea of a good time to sit in a drive–in and watch people get ... Show more

You look out for yourself and nothin' can touch you..." (S.E Hinton) Dallas was committed many
crimes and that is the reason he says this quote that he looks out for the gang but mostly Johnny
because he cares about him a lot. "It was Darry. He hit me. I don't know what happened, but I
couldn't take him hollering at me and hitting me too." (S.E Hinton, 51) Even though the gang is very
close they still experience personal violence between them like Johnny's parents and Darry hitting
ponyboy, but Darry had to make a lesson of ponyboy for not being smart and safe. "Darry and I
would probably still have misunderstandings – we were too different not to – but no more fights. We
couldn't do anything to hurt Soda". (S.E Hinton, 12.57) All of the fighting rumbles and jail time
never hurt anybody but until ponyboy ran away because Darry smacked him and that hurt Soda a lot
because he loved and really cared about Pony. despite the consequences, they must decide to return

Conflicts In The Outsiders, By S. E. Hinton
The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton, is an enjoyable, intriguing book, that displays many different types
conflicts. The Outsiders is a book written in the perspective of the greasers, a dirty, heartfelt, gang
that lives in a poor, worn–down part of Tulsa, Oklahoma. The main character of the book is a boy
named Ponyboy. Ponyboy lives alongside his two older brothers, Darry, and Sodapop. The greasers
have a rivalry with the Socs, the rich kids, with a hard, cold heart, who live on the "nice" side of
town. Many different conflicts are written throughout the book clearly, others more hidden. One of
the conflicts presented in the book is character versus society. In the following quote, the book, the
greasers call the cops, the fuzz: "We left when the switchblades came out, because the cops would
be coming soon and nobody in his right mind wants to be around when the fuzz show (Hinton 20)."
In this example, the characters are going against the fuzz (the cops). The word "fuzz" is written in
the book in many places. They are especially shown in Dally's death when he purposely got himself
shot. Another time when the fuzz is written in the book is when Ponyboy ... Show more content on

Throughout the book, many characters fight others along with themselves. In one part of the book,
Ponyboy constantly fights himself when he blames himself for Johnny's death. ""I had it.' I stopped
him. He was looking at me strangely. 'I had the knife. I killed Bob' (Hinton 165)." Ponyboy could
not take the pressure of Johnny's death, so he started telling himself he killed Bob, and that Johnny
was still alive. An additional scene when someone was against himself, was when Dally got himself
killed, on purpose, by the fuzz. Dally, just like Ponyboy, couldn't get over the death of Johnny. He
was conflicted with himself and decided to end his own life. These events not only hurt the people
who personally had them, but it also affected everyone else around

Family In The Outsiders By S. E. Hinton
In the novel The Outsiders by S.E Hinton, a major concept is Family. This helps the reader to
understand that Darry saved Ponyboy when he got jumped, that Ponyboy thought that Darry treats
him awful because he hates him, and that in end of the book Darry and Ponyboy made up their
relationship. Ponyboy got saved by Darry while Ponyboy was getting jumped. After leaving the
movies, Ponyboy was jumped by the Socs. The Socs almost beat him up but Darry came and saved
him. "Then someone had me under the armpits and was hauling me to my feet. It was Darry." (pg 6)
This explains how Darry came and saved him from the Socs while when Ponyboy was getting
jumped. In real life we have to be their for our younger siblings when they need us in difficult

Stereotypes In The Outsiders By S. E. Hinton
In the short novel The Outsiders, written by S.E. Hinton, many 1960s stereotypes are used which
separate the characters by where they live, how they dress, and how they act, but Hinton quickly
gave characters who did not abide or fit these stereotypes. This showed that no matter your hair,
dress, home, hobbies, or financial situation, everyone will always be different, but that doesn't mean
no two people cannot become friends. The stereotypes that follow you do not determine your
personality or actions, only you. The amount of money someone has, the neighborhood someone
lives in, and the school someone goes to does not determine their opinions, ideas, or dreams. Pony
lives in a somewhat run–down neighborhood, and he, Darry, and Sodapop don't have much, but they
and their friends still try to be happy, and enjoy life when they can. Unlike the Socs, the Greasers
are a family. If one of them gets shot at, four more of them jump out to protect them. " "It's not just
money. Part of it is, but not all. You Greasers have a different set of values. You're more emotional.
We're sophisticated – cool to the point of not feeling anything. Nothing is real with us." Cherry
Valance is a Soc girl, but according to Pony, she isn't exactly a Soc because she doesn't chose to see
sides like other Socs. She sees Socs as people who don't feel. Life is good enough for them that
things get repetitive and boring, which is probably part of why the Socs enjoy jumping Greasers.
The Greasers, on the other hand, don't have consistent lives. Only a few of them are in school, not
all of them have jobs, and they're always getting into just enough trouble to keep themselves alive,
which is why they seem to have more emotions than the Socs. The two groups are so different, and,
in retrospect, it's all because of money. Money could solve almost all of the Greasers' problems, like
by earning them some respect, and it would mean they don't have to work so hard to get by. When
Cherry explains to Pony that Socs have troubles, just like the Greasers, he can't imagine what kind
of troubles they could possibly have, but he quickly learned. All Bob Sheldon wanted was for
someone to tell him no, and when someone did it ended up costing him his life.

Stereotypes In The Outsiders By S. E. Hinton
In the book The Outsiders by S.E Hinton, there are groups called the Socs, who are rich kids, and
Greasers, who are hoods, just like the main character Ponyboy Curtis. The story takes place in a
town called Tulsa in Oklahoma, where Ponyboy lives. He lives with his older brothers Sodapop
Curtis and Darry Curtis, and is part of a gang of consisting of Johnny, Dallas Winston (Dally),
Steve, and Two–Bit. One night when Johnny goes too far and kills a Soc named Bob, him and Pony
are forced to run away to avoid capture from the authorities. There are many events, quotes, and
author choices that show a common theme, which is Stereotypes are often judged by other people,
but aren't always true. This is proven time and time again after people are beaten up, injured, and
even killed through the span of this book. To start, there are many quotes from the book that can

After hearing young children are inside, they rush inside to save them, only to end up with Johnny

think they started something like this, since people don't think someone like a hood would save
children, but Pony rushed directly in the fire to save some kids, showing compassion, which is
something stereotypes don't really show about people. In The Outsiders, there are also examples of
stereotypes of places in the dialogue of the characters, such as when the Greasers say words like
"ya'll" and the Socs don't. This becomes and issue later when Johnny and Pony need directions to
the abandoned church, they both say that they don't sound like people from around the area, and
they could be caught after Bob's murder. The author uses words like this to show how most people

The Outsiders : The Outsiders By S. E. Hinton
The Outsiders Essay The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton is about two groups of kids the greasers and the
Socs. The Socs are the rich kids who drive expensive cars and wear expensive clothes and the
greasers are considered the bums. They don't have money and they don't get whatever they want,
they also have to work extra hard to get to where they want to be. If you are considered a greaser
you are a muffin and the Socs are the cupcakes. Everybody would prefer a cupcake over a muffin,
but in this story two boys were just trying to protect themselves and they get into some trouble while
doing it so, they hit the road. I am going to tell you about whether or not Ponyboy and Johnny are
heroes. To start this off I think that Ponyboy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Fast forwarding to the part in the church, Johnny had run into the church for two reasons. One is
that he wanted to help and the other is that he was going to keep Ponyboy safe no matter what
happened and he did a great job of it. Living the way that Johnny did, he did something great in his
life. He didn't deserve to die, but he died a hero and not everyone in the town where the greasers
lived agree. Johnny lived in a world where he was probably scared every time he walked around
town and that flat out sucks. He didn't have the best family life, but he had Dally and that was pretty
great because Dally loved Johnny. "Why can I take it when Dally can't? And then I knew. Johnny
was the only thing Dally loved. And now Johnny was gone." (Hinton pg. 152). Ponyboy is gold. He
is helpful and smart, but he's a greaser and well that's fine to some people...to others it's just not
acceptable. Even though Ponyboy and Johnny hit the road after Bob was killed he still deserved
better. Ponyboy had potential and he is going places, I can tell. Ponyboy has had many losses in his
life, Mom, Dad, Johnny, and Dally, but he is strong. That's all he is going to need to be. This novel
is honestly great. It's worth the read and I think that the author had an amazing story line. Ponyboy
and Johnny are heroes. Just because you come from

Loyalty In The Outsiders By S. E. Hinton
I believe the theme is The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton is that loyalty is an important role to a good
relationship and builds trust. This theme is shown in many events in The Outsiders, for example
when Ponyboys gets jumped by the Socs, when Johnny kills Bob, and during the church fire. "Since
Mom and Dad were killed in an auto wreck, the three of us only get to stay together only as long as
we behave. So Soda and I stay out of trouble as much as we can, and we're careful not to get caught
when we can't" (Hinton 3). This quote is showing the importance of loyalty because the three Curtis
brothers must behave in order to stay together. Darry was also loyal to his brothers because he
decided to raise them instead of the opportunity to play football in college. Another quote that states
that it is important to be loyal is, on page 26, "When you're a gang, you stick up for the members. If
you don't stick up for them, stick together, make like brothers, it isn't a gang anymore" (26). The
meaning of this quote is when you're a gang, you're like brothers and will do anything for one of the
members, maybe even murder. These two quotes tell the reader that it is important to be loyal to
your family and gang members, but there are also events in the book where characters are showing
loyalty to each other. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Role Of Gangs In The Outsiders By S. E. Hinton
The Outsiders is an action packed novel that envelopes the themes of class conflict and alienation.
The idea of social opposition drives the plot of the book between the opulent Socs and poor
Greasers. This idea of social difference establishes the feeling of estrangement within some
characters of this book, persuading them to find their true identity. The author, S. E. Hinton, further
contributes to the idea of estrangement by creating a society that is based upon the idea of cliques.
The book pivots on the fact of self–preservation, which the characters achieve by banding together
as one to form gangs. Within this novel, the foundation of gangs plays a major role by offering the
characters a sense of realistic family love, protection, & friendship in their dangerous and
sometimes deadly community. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For many of the Curtis posse members, the gang was the only real family they had in their
dysfunctional lives. This concept of family has deeply influenced the choices made by the different
people in the book such as Johnny Cade. As said by Ponyboy on Johnny, "He was the gang's pet.
Everyone's kid brother." Johnny had a tough time at home and the only reason that he didn't give up
is because the gang was there to give him love. The gang, as expressed by the quote, loved him back
and Johnny's death near the end of the book strikes the characters hard. This strengthened the claim
the Johnny was a vital piece to the gang and that they depended on him just as much as he needed
them. This example of realistic love shows one reason that gangs in the book serve great

Stereotypes In The Outsiders By S. E. Hinton
Ponyboy Was Never Like the Rest of the Greasers
What is a stereotype? In the book The Outsider by S.E Hinton, Ponyboy the main character is a
member of a gang called the Greasers. People have fixed ideas or stereotypes about what gangs are
like. Ponyboy considered himself a Greaser but he is the farthest thing from that stereotype.
Ponyboy is intelligent, feels deeply and is not a violent person and that does not fit the Greaser
stereotype.
Stereotyping is when you take a person and you compare them to a type of person. This is wrong
because not all people are the same. People are unique. There is no one type of person. Sadly,
people believe that anyone who is part of a gang is not smart, but Ponyboy shows them that he is.
Ponyboy got A's, but he was a Greaser. "I used to make A's in English," Ponyboy said (Hinton 169).
Yes, it is true Ponyboy said "used to," but he went through some rough drama. That means he was
smart, and he really tried in English. People think ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ponyboy did feel deeply about his friends and his loyalty to his gang, and sunsets. Greaser are just
normal people with normal feeling, but they choose to hide it. Maybe some of them can shut out
their emotions, but Ponyboy is not one of those people. He has emotions like fear and sadness just
like us. "My stomach gave a violent start, and turned into a hunk of ice," Ponyboy said (154–155).
He was surprised, horrified, and a lot of other mixed emotions. In this scene Ponyboy's friend is shot
by a cop. Death is a scary thing, and there is no going back. Seeing this had to be traumatizing.
Getting close to dying, against your will may be even scarier. This happened to Ponyboy too. "I was
scared so bad I wish it would. I screamed for Soda, Darry, anyone." (5). In this scene, he is getting
drowned, and he is wishing for death. It is hard to hid you emotion after experiencing so much

The Outsiders By S. E. Hinton: Character Analysis
The Outsiders is a novel that represents many themes such as honour, the innocence of childhood
and the value of appearances through the characters' dialogue and behaviour that feature in this
book. The author, S. E. Hinton writes about a character in her novel by the name of Dallas Winston,
a hardened young man that has seen and done too many things for his age. His loyalty to his gang,
criminal record and his stand out looks are just some of the characteristics represented to the reader.
This is conveyed through Dallas' description, conversation and actions but also through the main
character's and his friends' thoughts of him. Dallas' attributes play a major role in the development
of the outstanding themes in this story and help to give the novel depth and a story that almost 50
years on is still able to relate to teenagers of today. Dallas Winston is the best example to show how
honour is weaved into the story because of his 'tougher, colder, meaner' (Pg. 13) temperament that
the main character, Ponyboy portrays to the reader. Any act of honour or selflessness is surprising
because of Dallas' demeanour, so when Dallas takes the massive risk of possibly getting jailed to
help Ponyboy and Johnny when they're in trouble, the reader's respect for Dallas is definitely raised

His hood attitude is only what he lets reflect to others, but he has so many more dimensions, such as
the honourable side to him that he only shows when he must, the softness he shows towards Johnny

appearance is very important in this novel for not just Dallas but for all the characters as they all
belong to a group or social class and have some standards that they are meant to meet, Winston was
a particularly interesting representation of appearances because of the way S.E Hinton created his

Character Analysis: The Outsiders, By S. E. Hinton
What would you do if your parents died in a car wreck, and you had to choose where to go, your
brother's house or into a boys' or girls' home? In the dramatic story of "The Outsiders," by S. E.
Hinton, Ponyboy has to choose beside these decisions. The issue is he wants to stay with Darry and
Sodapop, his older brothers, but if he gets caught by the cops, he'll get sent to a boys' home. Some
readers believe he should go to the boys' home, where he will be treated with more respect. Ponyboy
Curtis, should stay in a boys' home for these reasons. "You don't yell at him!" Darry wheeled around
and slapped me so hard that it knocked me against the door."(Hinton 50) This shows that Darry can
be abusive and can't control his actions. This reveals that Pony could be abused if he decides to stay
with his brothers. Also, "Darry's hard and firm and rarely grins at all."(Hinton 2) This reveals that,
he would always be coming home to a hard, grim face. Overall, both of these details, show that
Darry is a bad influence on Ponyboy. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"Two–bit left me sitting on the bench at the bus stop while he went to a gas station to buy some

get in a fight, get jumped, or even murdered. "And anytime you don't like the way I'm running
things around here, you can just get out, ALL RIGHT?" said Darry. (Hinton 173–174) This shows
that he sometimes is not welcome in the house, and is kicked out of the house constantly.
Furthermore this explains that, Pony, when he is out of his house, he has to go sleep on the streets,
knowing the risks of what is out on these streets. However, some people have something different to

The Outsiders By S. E Hinton Essay
Yves Belance 28 Nov 2016 V. Minchener Enc11 Research Paper The novel and film, The Outsiders
by S. E Hinton, can be composed based on symbols, imagery, characters, and chronology. The
Outsiders is a novel and a movie. The novel was written by Susan Eloise Hinton, in 1965, where it
took place in Tulsa, Oklahoma. After the book was published the movie, The Outsiders was
produced in 1983 directed by Francis Ford Coppola. The author has a great sense of imagery.
Ponyboy the narrator of the story used much imagery in chapter one in the novel to bring his brother
and friends who are also Greasers to life. Ponyboy 's big brother, Darry who "had eyes that are like
two pieces of pale blue green ice" letting the reader know that Darry is the serious and determined
person. In addition with "broad shoulders", "muscular" and "six two feet height", from the
description, the reader can picture Darry as an athlete from the physical appearance. Ponyboy uses
imagery on his second older brother Sodapop "His eyes are dark brown lively, dancing recklessly
laughing eyes that can be gentle and sympathetic one moment and blazing with anger the next". The
descriptions gave Sodapop an image that signified effervescent and a slight of anger but kind. Dally
one of Ponyboy friends and a member of the Greasers, has eyes that are "blue, blazing ice, and cold
let the reader know that Dallas heart if filled with rage". There wasn't much imagery that can
describe Steve Randler completely. Ponyboy

The book The Outsiders by S.E Hinton, Ponyboy forms a different identity throughout the book. At
the beginning of the book, Ponyboy's identity is an outsider to the greasers and to his community.
He does different things, like watch movies without being disturbing, he's good in school and he
likes to read books. Out of the gang Ponyboy didn't have friends. His gang doesn't read books or

read your book over your shoulder. I'm different that way." He felt like he was an outsider to
everyone because he was different. People in his gang had gone to jail and Ponyboy stayed good,
different. In the text Doing the Right Thing, four football players are different than other people.
They did the right thing when others would've stolen. They acted different, like Ponyboy. They text
said, "Thomas James pulled out $5 to cover the batteries and a video cord they needed, waved it at
the surveillance camera above the cash register and laid it on the counter... One of them took 80
cents out of his pocket and laid it on the counter too. Tax." The four football players acted
differently then how people normally do. Like Ponyboy they don't act the same, they are good.
Ponyboy's first identity is an

The Outsiders By S. E. Hinton

  • 1. The Outsiders By S. E. Hinton Major Work Review Guide Title: The Outsiders Author: S.E. Hinton Published: 1967 by Viking Press Significant characters and brief statement of function in the work: Name: Function: 1. Pony boy Curtis– The narrator of the story. Ponyboy's love for literature and academics make him different from the rest of the gang. He's also the youngest. Because his parents died in a car accident, Ponyboy lives with his brothers. His oldest brother accuses him of lacking common sense but, ponyboy is a reliable and observant character. 2. Sodapop Curtis– Ponyboy 's 16–going–on–17–year–old brother. He is a high school dropout and works at the local gas station. He looks after his younger brother Ponyboy. Sodapop is the middle Curtis boy. Ponyboy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Two–Bit Matthews–The joker of Ponyboy's group. Two–Bit, whose real name is Keith, is a wisecracking greaser who regularly shoplifts. He prizes his sleek black–handled switchblade. Significant settings and a brief statement Ponyboy leaves us with a vague description of the town where the story takes place. Eastside, Westside: Eastside is the poor side of town and Westside is Soc side of town with wealthier people. The church: The church is smack dab in the middle of that pastoral setting, situated at the top of a hill. Pony and Johnny can feast their eyes on the countryside stretching out beneath them. Yet, they 're still isolated and outside of society, just like this church. It presents a gloomy contrast to the brightness of nature around them. Ponyboy has stopped going to church because the gang misbehaves in the church. Drive–in Movie: The gang all sneak into the local drive in movie this is an important place. Ponyboy meets cherry valance at this point. Brief summary of key plot elements: Plot consists of six parts: (1) exposition, (2) intro. • 3. Chaos In The Outsiders, By S. E. Hinton Outsiders Connection In the book, The Outsiders, the author, S.E Hinton ingrains that social class causes chaos. Ponyboy leaves home enraged and stunned after his brother Darry slaps him across the face. Ponyboy meets up with his friend Johnny with a plan to "run away." The plan falls through and the two end up at the park face to face with the Socs–– the same Socs that jumped Johnny. In a point to save Ponyboy from death Johnny kills Bob, one of the main Socs of the group. While Ponyboy stares at Bob, he thinks , "Bob, the handsome Soc, was lying there in the moonlight, doubled up and still. A dark pool was growing from him, spreading slowly over the blue–white cement" (56). In this passage, S.E Hinton supports the idea that social class causes chaos. Since Johnny and Ponyboy are in a lower social class than the Socs, the Socs think that they can take advantage of the greasers by jumping them and harming them. Johnny and Pony have been Jumped before and this time when someone's life is on the line it can cause a bad chain of events starting with Johnny killing Bob, the Soc. Once again, S.E Hinton establishes that social class causes chaos in one's life. Johnny and Pony come home after ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this quotation, Hinton again proves that social class causes chaos. Since Johnny and Ponyboy are not as wealthy as the Socs and do not live in a neighborhood as nice, the reporters are lead to believe that they are "hoods." People that are not capable of doing anything good for the world, just bad. So, when Johnny and Ponyboy commit a heroic act everyone is stunned because they did not think that "hoods" could do good. That is is what lead them to the conclusion that Johnny and Ponyboy, "turned heroes." Which is chaotic for Johnny and Ponyboy because people do not understand that not all greasers are bad they just did not have a chance to show the good in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Johnny In The Outsiders By S. E. Hinton The author of The Outsiders S.E. Hinton wrote Johnny and Dally as complete opposites. Johnny is made out to be a quiet, timid sixteen year old boy who has a bad home life. And Dally is known as the outspoken leader that is tough as nails. Ponyboys relationship with Johnny is completely different than the relationship he has with Dally. Ponyboy loves and cares for Johnny's wellbeing, and Johnny is someone Ponyboy can be open with. Dally is intimidating to Ponyboy and he doesn't really care for the way he lives his life. Dally plays the role of a "greaser" extremely well, he loves a fight and to get into mindless trouble. In the book Ponyboy said, "He had been arrested, he got drunk, he rode in rodeos, lied, cheated, stole, rolled drunks, jumped small kids ––– he did everything." The gang sees him as a leader figure because he is the toughest and meanest person they know. Johnny on the other hand, despite being labeled as a "greaser", does not act like one. After getting a severe beating from a group of "socs" and living with abusive parents, Johnny has become fragile and timid. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The extent as to how much Dally cares for Johnny is not revealed until Johnny passes away, but it's made clear that Johnny idolizes Dally. After the rumble Dally and Ponyboy go to the hospital to see Johnny, who is not doing too well. Sadly he passes away and Dally crumbles under the grief. This quote made it clear that Dally loved Johnny very deeply, "Whirling suddenly, he slammed back against the wall. His face contracted in agony, and sweat streamed down his face." Dally's actions after Johnny's death were unexpected because he ditched Ponyboy, robbed a store, went on the run from the police, and called the gang for help making a getaway. The police had surrounded Dally before the gang could get to him and they watched as he pulled a gun and was shot on the spot. The loss of Johnny literally killed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Loyalty In The Outsiders By S. E. Hinton The Outsiders is a thrilling novel that is a heart racing drama that will keep audiences reading all day. S.E. Hinton is an author of many award winning books and she definitely knows how to capture the heart of readers with theme and mood constantly changing throughout the characters. This stimulating story is a classic novel that teaches lessons of discrimination, the need to belong, and the conflict against the protagonist. The town is separated between two groups and the gang of friends are constantly in trouble and trying to make it through their day. The book is full of trust and depending on one another. The Outsiders is truly a novel that entices the reader to keep ripping through the pages as love, death, and heroism take up the pages. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... What loyalty has provided in both novels is how certain characters are experiencing the same kind of loyalty and have similar reactions. For example, when Dally was being loyal to Johnny by shooting himself after he dies, that was a more extreme version of how Gutta reacted. When she found out Talon was "dead," she was heart–broken and could not stop crying. Death in both stories created similar reactions between two characters who are both loyal. Within both books, loyalty is a lesson that is carried out in each chapter. However, there are also differences in both novels. In The Outsiders, loyalty teaches how trust is crucial in friends and how that helps them move on with their life. In Downsiders, loyalty teaches how to love one another and what it means to take care of eachother. For example, at the hospital Dally states, "Oh, damnit, Johnny, don't die, please don't die..." then bolted out the door. That shows that Dally was frustrated and heartbroken and that was loyalty because Dally did not want Johnny to leave. GIVE QUOTE FOR DOWNSIDERS THAT IS ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. The Outsiders By S. E. Hinton Has anyone ever been deeply devastated? A big and beyond compare pain. What if it was something that could change the way someone would look at life? Imagine the very worst happening. The people someone would love gone, in this case, parents. In the novel entitled The Outsiders, by S. E. Hinton, she walks the reader through the experiences of a fourteen year old boy and his six lifelong friends who call themselves the "Greasers." Along the way Ponyboy Curtis, the youngest greaser, finds himself in a touchy situation that may place him in a boys home. Ponyboy should not be placed in a boys home because he has loving brothers who care for him, support him, and he also takes honor classes and does significantly in school. To begin with, Darry and Sodapop are Pony's older brothers. They both have a very strong and loving bond with him. Is Darry a good enough guardian or not? Their actions towards him are affectionate and warmhearted. "I don't know if you ought to be in this rumble, Ponyboy"... "You fight real good for a kid your size. But you were in shape before. You've lost weight and you don't look so great, kid. You're tensed up to much." (Hinton, 133–134) As shown above, Darry ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Heroism In The Outsiders, By S. E. Hinton In the book The Outsiders, written by S. E. Hinton, the narrator, Ponyboy, talks about his life as a poor person and the fights, rich against the poor. The novel focused on how the rich and the poor people did not understand each other. According to Ponyboy this led in the two groups to hate each other. The three topics addressed in the engaging novel are the fight between rich and poor, the power of friendship, and what defines heroism. To begin with, the fight between the rich and poor is a large theme in the book The Outsiders. When Ponyboy got jumped he thought, "It occurred to me that they could kill me," (5) This shows that since Ponyboy was a greaser, the Socs jumped him and could have killed him. This also shows that the Socs did not care whether they killed him or not. Bob also said, "You know what a greaser is? White trash with long hair" (55). This showed that the Socs thought of themselves higher than others. This also shows how the Socs did not show any sympathy with the greasers. This shows how the rich and the poor fought because of their differences. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Early on, Ponyboy stated, ". . . organized gangs are a rarities–– there are just small bunches of friends who stick together." (11). This is important because it shows how friendship bonded their small "gang" and how the gang helped each other. This also shows how the gang relies upon each other to keep alive. Ponyboy also said,". . . had been part of our gang and we wouldn't desert him." (169). This shows that the gang was so close that even when one of them died, they would still stand up for them. This is an important fact because without each other, they would fall apart like Ponyboy did. This shows the power of friendship and how it bonded together the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Violence In The Outsiders By S. E. Hinton In the novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton shows that fights create more violence and can even lead to tragedy. The narrator Ponyboy, a greaser was scared for when Johnny got jumped Ponyboy reflected on his feelings in chapter 1, "I had never been jumped, but I had seen Johnny after the after four Socs got hold of him, and it wasn't pretty. Johnny was scared of his own shadow after that. He was sixteen then." (Hinton 4) This quote is an example that fights and violence can lead to tragedy because after Johnny had been jumped by the Socs he was terrified and scared of his own shadow. He had to start walking with a group of people. This also happened at an early age so Johnny was scared after a while, " he was scared of his own shadow after he got jumped" This scene had me thinking about Johnny in the beginning of the book because he was only young and was just walking home and was jumped and attacked by four people scaring him for the rest of the book. ... (56) This quote is an example of violence because he was being attacked and there was fighting, which lead to an event in the next quote showing how it lead to tragedy because Bob was slowly dying. And eventually died. It also shows how they were fighting and then lead to a big cause where he had died because of the violence that was happening to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Dally As A Hero In The Outsiders By S. E. Hinton In the book The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton, the main character Dally can be viewed as a hero or a failure. The story introduced many different characters and different events that took place. Some of these events were good, and some were bad. One good event was them beating the Socs in the battle. A bad event was Dally committing suicide. Some people believe that he died a hero and some believe that he died as a failure. I believe that he died a hero for several reasons that include how he watched over his family and people he cared about, how he tried to save Johnie from the fire, and how he was able to save Ponyboy from the fire. One reason why some people think Dally died a hero is because he watched over his family and the people he cared about. He would make sure that everyone was home at night. He wanted to make sure that everyone was safe and tried to make sure that no one got hurt. If anyone was hurt, he would help them. If someone did not get home by night time, he would look for them. Everyone you know, besides your closest friends, thinks that you are an evil criminal, but you in fact are are very kind person. How would you feel? The Outsiders by S.E Hinton addresses this problem head–on as you follow Ponyboy as he battles stereotypes against his friends and himself. The theme of this book is to never judge a book by it's cover which is demonstrated through the two main groups: the Soc's and the Greaser's. It is also demonstrated through another character who is the group of Soc's but is a spy for the Greasers, Cherry Valance. One of the groups that are mentioned in the book Outsiders are the Greasers. What most Soc's actually do is of a stereotype of a Greaser. An example of this could be certain celebrities or athletes. They are prominent and seen as role models to this generation. However, some do decide to do bad things such as drugs. This has to do with the Soc's because they do terrible things to the Greasers. • 11. Stereotypes In The Outsiders By S. E. Hinton The novel and movie The Outsiders, written by S.E. Hinton, is about a boy, Ponyboy Curtis, and his struggles. Hinton writes about two gangs: the Socs and greasers. Ponyboy is labeled a greaser because of his lack of wealth and popularity. When his friend, Johnny, murders a Soc to save Ponyboy's life, they flee from town and hide in an abandoned church. This event brings many stereotypes that greasers are cruel people and hoods. There are many themes in The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, although one is stronger than the rest: injustice is caused by money, status, and circumstance. Due to a lack of money, Ponyboy and his family were greasers. As Ponyboy stated to Cherry, who was a rich Soc, "...maybe it was money that separated us" (Hinton 38). ... • 12. Loyalty In The Outsiders By S. E. Hinton "The silence grew heavier, and I could hear the harsh heavy breathing of the boys around me. Still Darry and the Soc walked slowly in a circle" (Hinton, 143). The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton is a realistic fiction novel taking place in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1966. The story informs the reader of a rivalry between two gangs, the Socials (Socs) who are the rich people that have nice cars, clothes, and have a bright future ahead of them. The Socs live on the West side. The Greasers are the other gang who weren't rich, weren't known to have bright futures and always had grease in their hair, hence the name Greasers. Throughout the story many themes have been applied to our society today. Two themes that I have chosen were that loyalty is a thread that holds people together and to not judge people based on how society labels them. Being loyal is to have a strong feeling of support or allegiance for someone or something. In The Outsiders, Ponyboy and all the other Greasers had to assist each other in order not to get pushed around by the Socs. An example of loyalty involves Ponyboy, Sodapop, and Darry, "Since Mom and Dad were killed in an auto wreck, the three of us get to stay together only as long as we behave. So Soda and I stay out of trouble as much as we can" (Hinton, 3). This quote shows how the Curtis boys had to be more trustworthy and dependable to each other since their parents died or if not, they would have to be separated. Another loyalty quote I found says, "You take up ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Her greatest work, one of which many high schoolers read today, is The Outsiders. This book for young adults has gotten much praise and love by many people, young and old, and will continue to enlighten the hearts of those who read it. Within this novel, and the movie that followed afterwards, many prominent themes of sociology are shown. One would have to be blind not to see how the social groups and other sociological themes relate to this masterpiece. Of all of the themes that the movie glosses over, ingroups and outgroups, deviant behavior, and group conformity are the themes that most relate with the real world, outside of the pages and scenes of these works. ... There are also deeper sets of groups within each group, such as Ponyboy being a part of an ingroup with his family members and other close friends, and the Greasers that aren't close being an outgroup. The author makes me believe that one of the biggest themes would be, money doesn't make who you are. These are the three quotes that support my decision. My first quote is when Randy was in the car talking to Ponyboy; '" Greaser didn't have anything to do with it. My buddy over there wouldn't of done it. Maybe you would have done the same thing, maybe a friend of yours wouldn't have. It's the individual'" ( Hinton 115 ). The reason why I picked this quote is because, Randy's buddy is a Soc who has a lot of money. When Randy was saying this he meant that no matter what the social class and how much money someone had they most likely wouldn't of done it. • 21. Identity Development : The Outsiders By S. E. Hinton Ben Cooke November 18, 2014 PSYC 410 Fall 2014 Identity Development in The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton Introduction Throughout the events that take place in S.E. Hinton's The Outsiders Ponyboy Curtis experiences an identity crisis and three of the four identity statuses. At the very end of the book he shows signs that he is beginning to resolve his identity crisis in a more positive way, but it is not shown. Identity development is one of the most crucial stages of adolescence. Failure to fully resolve the adolescent identity crisis can have both short and long term consequences. In the case of Ponyboy, his lack of resolution to the identity crisis led to problems in school and with his family. A persons' identity is the self–definition of who and what they are. It is based on the sum of persons' life experiences and is comprised of their self–conceptions, self–esteem, socioeconomic status, life chances, and personality factors. All of these parts can come together during the identity crisis to form a stable and healthy identity. Components of identity The first component of an identity is persons' self–conceptions. Self–conceptions are someone's own opinions about their abilities and attributes. It also incorporates and internalizes outside information about that person. An adolescent may describe themselves as pretty, or intelligent, or awkward if they have been in numerous situations that made them feel that way. These self–conceptions will change and diversify ... • 27. Stereotypes In The Outsiders By S. E. Hinton In the short novel The Outsiders, written by S.E. Hinton, many 1960s stereotypes are used which separate the characters by where they live, how they dress, and how they act, but Hinton quickly gave characters who did not abide or fit these stereotypes. This showed that no matter your hair, dress, home, hobbies, or financial situation, everyone will always be different, but that doesn't mean no two people cannot become friends. The stereotypes that follow you do not determine your personality or actions, only you. The amount of money someone has, the neighborhood someone lives in, and the school someone goes to does not determine their opinions, ideas, or dreams. Pony lives in a somewhat run–down neighborhood, and he, Darry, and Sodapop don't have much, but they and their friends still try to be happy, and enjoy life when they can. Unlike the Socs, the Greasers are a family. If one of them gets shot at, four more of them jump out to protect them. " "It's not just money. Part of it is, but not all. You Greasers have a different set of values. You're more emotional. We're sophisticated – cool to the point of not feeling anything. Nothing is real with us." Cherry Valance is a Soc girl, but according to Pony, she isn't exactly a Soc because she doesn't chose to see sides like other Socs. She sees Socs as people who don't feel. Life is good enough for them that things get repetitive and boring, which is probably part of why the Socs enjoy jumping Greasers. The Greasers, on the other hand, don't have consistent lives. Only a few of them are in school, not all of them have jobs, and they're always getting into just enough trouble to keep themselves alive, which is why they seem to have more emotions than the Socs. The two groups are so different, and, in retrospect, it's all because of money. Money could solve almost all of the Greasers' problems, like by earning them some respect, and it would mean they don't have to work so hard to get by. When Cherry explains to Pony that Socs have troubles, just like the Greasers, he can't imagine what kind of troubles they could possibly have, but he quickly learned. Even though Ponyboy and Johnny hit the road after Bob was killed he still deserved better. Ponyboy had potential and he is going places, I can tell. Ponyboy has had many losses in his life, Mom, Dad, Johnny, and Dally, but he is strong. That's all he is going to need to be. This novel is honestly great. It's worth the read and I think that the author had an amazing story line. Ponyboy and Johnny are heroes. Just because you come from ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 31. Loyalty In The Outsiders By S. E. Hinton I believe the theme is The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton is that loyalty is an important role to a good relationship and builds trust. This theme is shown in many events in The Outsiders, for example when Ponyboys gets jumped by the Socs, when Johnny kills Bob, and during the church fire. "Since Mom and Dad were killed in an auto wreck, the three of us only get to stay together only as long as we behave. So Soda and I stay out of trouble as much as we can, and we're careful not to get caught when we can't" (Hinton 3). This quote is showing the importance of loyalty because the three Curtis brothers must behave in order to stay together. Darry was also loyal to his brothers because he decided to raise them instead of the opportunity to play football in college. Another quote that states that it is important to be loyal is, on page 26, "When you're a gang, you stick up for the members. If you don't stick up for them, stick together, make like brothers, it isn't a gang anymore" (26). The meaning of this quote is when you're a gang, you're like brothers and will do anything for one of the members, maybe even murder. These two quotes tell the reader that it is important to be loyal to your family and gang members, but there are also events in the book where characters are showing loyalty to each other. ... • 32. The Role Of Gangs In The Outsiders By S. E. Hinton The Outsiders is an action packed novel that envelopes the themes of class conflict and alienation. The idea of social opposition drives the plot of the book between the opulent Socs and poor Greasers. This idea of social difference establishes the feeling of estrangement within some characters of this book, persuading them to find their true identity. The author, S. E. Hinton, further contributes to the idea of estrangement by creating a society that is based upon the idea of cliques. The book pivots on the fact of self–preservation, which the characters achieve by banding together as one to form gangs. Within this novel, the foundation of gangs plays a major role by offering the characters a sense of realistic family love, protection, & friendship in their dangerous and sometimes deadly community. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For many of the Curtis posse members, the gang was the only real family they had in their dysfunctional lives. This concept of family has deeply influenced the choices made by the different people in the book such as Johnny Cade. As said by Ponyboy on Johnny, "He was the gang's pet. Everyone's kid brother." Johnny had a tough time at home and the only reason that he didn't give up is because the gang was there to give him love. The gang, as expressed by the quote, loved him back and Johnny's death near the end of the book strikes the characters hard. This strengthened the claim the Johnny was a vital piece to the gang and that they depended on him just as much as he needed them. This example of realistic love shows one reason that gangs in the book serve great ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. Stereotypes In The Outsiders By S. E. Hinton Ponyboy Was Never Like the Rest of the Greasers What is a stereotype? In the book The Outsider by S.E Hinton, Ponyboy the main character is a member of a gang called the Greasers. People have fixed ideas or stereotypes about what gangs are like. Ponyboy considered himself a Greaser but he is the farthest thing from that stereotype. Ponyboy is intelligent, feels deeply and is not a violent person and that does not fit the Greaser stereotype. Stereotyping is when you take a person and you compare them to a type of person. This is wrong because not all people are the same. People are unique. There is no one type of person. Sadly, people believe that anyone who is part of a gang is not smart, but Ponyboy shows them that he is. Ponyboy got A's, but he was a Greaser. "I used to make A's in English," Ponyboy said (Hinton 169). Yes, it is true Ponyboy said "used to," but he went through some rough drama. That means he was smart, and he really tried in English. People think ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Ponyboy did feel deeply about his friends and his loyalty to his gang, and sunsets. Greaser are just normal people with normal feeling, but they choose to hide it. Maybe some of them can shut out their emotions, but Ponyboy is not one of those people. He has emotions like fear and sadness just like us. "My stomach gave a violent start, and turned into a hunk of ice," Ponyboy said (154–155). He was surprised, horrified, and a lot of other mixed emotions. In this scene Ponyboy's friend is shot by a cop. Death is a scary thing, and there is no going back. Seeing this had to be traumatizing. Getting close to dying, against your will may be even scarier. This happened to Ponyboy too. "I was scared so bad I wish it would. I screamed for Soda, Darry, anyone." (5). In this scene, he is getting drowned, and he is wishing for death. It is hard to hid you emotion after experiencing so much ... • 34.
  • 35. The Outsiders By S. E. Hinton: Character Analysis The Outsiders is a novel that represents many themes such as honour, the innocence of childhood and the value of appearances through the characters' dialogue and behaviour that feature in this book. The author, S. E. Hinton writes about a character in her novel by the name of Dallas Winston, a hardened young man that has seen and done too many things for his age. His loyalty to his gang, criminal record and his stand out looks are just some of the characteristics represented to the reader. This is conveyed through Dallas' description, conversation and actions but also through the main character's and his friends' thoughts of him. Dallas' attributes play a major role in the development of the outstanding themes in this story and help to give the novel depth and a story that almost 50 years on is still able to relate to teenagers of today. Dallas Winston is the best example to show how honour is weaved into the story because of his 'tougher, colder, meaner' (Pg. 13) temperament that the main character, Ponyboy portrays to the reader. Any act of honour or selflessness is surprising because of Dallas' demeanour, so when Dallas takes the massive risk of possibly getting jailed to help Ponyboy and Johnny when they're in trouble, the reader's respect for Dallas is definitely raised and the reader begins to understand ... • 36. Character Analysis: The Outsiders, By S. E. Hinton What would you do if your parents died in a car wreck, and you had to choose where to go, your brother's house or into a boys' or girls' home? In the dramatic story of "The Outsiders," by S. E. Hinton, Ponyboy has to choose beside these decisions. The issue is he wants to stay with Darry and Sodapop, his older brothers, but if he gets caught by the cops, he'll get sent to a boys' home. Some readers believe he should go to the boys' home, where he will be treated with more respect. Ponyboy Curtis, should stay in a boys' home for these reasons. "You don't yell at him!" Darry wheeled around and slapped me so hard that it knocked me against the door."(Hinton 50) This shows that Darry can be abusive and can't control his actions. This reveals that Pony could be abused if he decides to stay with his brothers. Also, "Darry's hard and firm and rarely grins at all."(Hinton 2) This reveals that, he would always be coming home to a hard, grim face. Overall, both of these details, show that Darry is a bad influence on Ponyboy. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Second, Pony is 14, and should not be in the streets, where he can get in a fight, get jumped, or even murdered. "And anytime you don't like the way I'm running things around here, you can just get out, ALL RIGHT?" said Darry. (Hinton 173–174) This shows that he sometimes is not welcome in the house, and is kicked out of the house constantly. Furthermore this explains that, Pony, when he is out of his house, he has to go sleep on the streets, knowing the risks of what is out on these streets. • 37. The Outsiders By S. E Hinton Essay Yves Belance 28 Nov 2016 V. Minchener Enc11 Research Paper The novel and film, The Outsiders by S. E Hinton, can be composed based on symbols, imagery, characters, and chronology. The Outsiders is a novel and a movie. The novel was written by Susan Eloise Hinton, in 1965, where it took place in Tulsa, Oklahoma. After the book was published the movie, The Outsiders was produced in 1983 directed by Francis Ford Coppola. The author has a great sense of imagery. Ponyboy the narrator of the story used much imagery in chapter one in the novel to bring his brother and friends who are also Greasers to life. Ponyboy 's big brother, Darry who "had eyes that are like two pieces of pale blue green ice" letting the reader know that Darry is the serious and determined person. In addition with "broad shoulders", "muscular" and "six two feet height", from the description, the reader can picture Darry as an athlete from the physical appearance. Ponyboy uses imagery on his second older brother Sodapop "His eyes are dark brown lively, dancing recklessly laughing eyes that can be gentle and sympathetic one moment and blazing with anger the next". The descriptions gave Sodapop an image that signified effervescent and a slight of anger but kind. Dally one of Ponyboy friends and a member of the Greasers, has eyes that are "blue, blazing ice, and cold let the reader know that Dallas heart if filled with rage". There wasn't much imagery that can describe Steve Randler completely. Ponyboy ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Once they had come home, he would tell them not to do that ever again for it worried him. He was like their guardian. Sure, sometimes he could be rude and upset, but deep down inside he was like their father. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At anytime, the entire building could have collapsed on both of them, and they would have both died right there. Right after they both came out, the church fell and there were a couple explosions. This shows that if Dally would have in there anytime later, he would have been dead. He knew this, but he still went in to save Johnie. Even if it meant him dying. • 40. The Outsiders In The Outsiders By S. E Hinton The book The Outsiders by S.E Hinton, Ponyboy forms a different identity throughout the book. At the beginning of the book, Ponyboy's identity is an outsider to the greasers and to his community. He does different things, like watch movies without being disturbing, he's good in school and he likes to read books. Out of the gang Ponyboy didn't have friends. His gang doesn't read books or watch movies like he does. The greasers just work hard and long on cars at gas stations. Ponyboy has potential though, he is smart. Ponyboy's identity is different then the the others in his gang. On page 2, it says, "When I see a movie with someone it's kind of uncomfortable, like having someone read your book over your shoulder. I'm different that way." He felt like he was an outsider to everyone because he was different. People in his gang had gone to jail and Ponyboy stayed good, different. In the text Doing the Right Thing, four football players are different than other people. They did the right thing when others would've stolen. They acted different, like Ponyboy. They text said, "Thomas James pulled out $5 to cover the batteries and a video cord they needed, waved it at the surveillance camera above the cash register and laid it on the counter... One of them took 80 cents out of his pocket and laid it on the counter too. Tax." The four football players acted differently then how people normally do.
