My focus group
favoured the magazine
name ‘Indigo’ with
‘Unsigned’ also proving
popular. The name
indigo is appropriate for
the genre of my
magazine and has a nice
ring to it.

I found that most of the
people in my focus
group favoured cover
lines to be one of the
most important features
to be used on a
magazine front cover.
They said that this was
because the cover lines
advertise what will be
inside the magazine
which entices them to
purchase it. Other
popular answers were
free items inside, bold
headline and the price.
These aspects were also
popular answers
because the price needs
to be easily visible for
the convenience of the
buyer and the students
involved in my focus
group said that anything
free catches their eye
due to them having low
funds.

th

The 5 font type (Spiderman
eclipse) was the most popular
answer as it is very bold and
dynamic which would be a
positive feature on the front
cover of a magazine in order
to make the magazine eye
catching.

The most popular answer for features on a
double page spread was to have a subtle colour
scheme. The reason for this was because the
focus group discussed that the main focus should
be on the actual story itself and a bright colour
scheme can prove distracting. They preferred the
half page image, half page text as opposed to
both pages being dominated by text. They
preferred this as they said it gives an even
balance and sometimes stories appear more
interesting if images relating to them are
included. Pull out quotes and an eye catching
headline were relatively popular answers because
pull out quotes give an insight to the sort of
language used in the interview and hints some of
the topics discussed and the focus group said that
a headline is always important to any article as it
needs to stand out to draw your attention to it.

Popularity for the features on
a contents page was shared
between images, page
number references and pull
outs of recommended
features. My focus group said
that images bring life to a
magazine and make it more
appealing to the eye
therefore they said images
were an essential feature. In
addition to this, most of my
focus group thought that page
number references make the
magazine more convenient as
they are aware of exactly
what is on each page. From
knowing this information they
can easily access what stories
will interest them. The pull
outs of recommended
features engages the
audience as my focus group
said that they would
appreciate the fact that the
publishers have carefully
selected articles that they
think their audience will
enjoy. Pull out features can
give certain articles a sense of
importance therefore this
shows the audience that the
articles are exclusive and
important.
