Production - performance Director MUST direct; work with the performer, perform with them Performer must over-perform Hair, make-up, costume, gesture and action should never be bland Performers should move, cameras should move Backgrounds should be eye-catching Shoot all way through the track in wide, mid medium close and close-up
35. Production - narrative Often the least interesting part It should work as a narrative sequence in its own right Should look distinctive from performance Should be shot according to principles of continuity ie should make sense It should follow a 3 part structure, otherwise nothing will actually happen This can usually be shot on a separate occasion to the performance
36. Post-production Capture whole sequences rather than shots Lay the performance bed first Layer the wide, mid and close-up shots over each other, then select the best Aim for variety and extremities Be ruthless on cutting for pace and rhythm Cut away mid lyric line to avoid predictability Edit the narrative sequentially Drop narrative clips in where you can Work on effects and grading last
