How Did William Bradford Influence The Mayflower Voyage
Bradford helped organize the Mayflower voyage in 1620, which about 100 people joined to separate
from The Church of England. "Of Plymouth Plantation" was written by Bradford in which he
described the journey to the "New World" and some aspects of the Pilgrim's life. William Bradford's
purpose of writing this historical account ("Of Plymouth Plantation") was to inform readers of the
future generations that would come to the New World about the hardships the Pilgrims had to
endure, so generations to come would not have to go through the same sufferings; Bradford
expresses fear/distrust and civility of his fellow Pilgrims through the use of tone.
The Pilgrims separated from The Church of England and concealed their Puritan beliefs, which was

Why Did So Many Colonists Die In Jamestown From 1607 To 1611
Name: Nakyia Moore Date: 2/10/17 Hour: 4 Jamestown In The Years of 1607 to 1611 Who were the
first settlers in Jamestown in the years of 1607 to 1611? What years did the most colonists die in
Jamestown? Back in Jamestown in the year of 1609 the settlers arrived at Jamestown. Jamestown
was located in Virginia in the years of 1609 to 1611. The English settlers went to Jamestown
because they wanted to find other land (new land) to stay on.The Settlers that went to Jamestown are
English settlers that came from England back in the 1600's. Why did so many Colonists die in
Jamestown during the years 1609 to 1611. The colonists died in 1607 to 1611 is because of the
Indians, The Environment, And The Colonists themselves. The first reasons why the so many
colonists died in 1607 to 1611 is because of the environment. The environment was bad in the early
1600's because of the drought that Jamestown had. The colonists were bathing, cleaning, drinking,
and washing their pots in the brackish water. THe brackish water had a lot to do with how most of
the colonists died because of the brackish water. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Indians killed 7 English settlers during the years of 1607 and 1608. The Indians were not great
friends with the English settlers so some of the English settlers and the Indians got killed.

have anything to trade for the corn. The Indians did not want to trade corn for nothing because the
English had nothing to trade for the corn.( Document D) The Indians had most of the forts in
Jamestown then the English had. The English had very little space to farm or to do anything in there
land areas that they had they also had very little supplement. The supplement just barely got around

The Magna Carta, John Locke, And The Mayflower Compact-The...
The Magna Carta, John Locke, and the Mayflower Compact––The Creators of Government
President Abraham Lincoln said, "We the people are the rightful masters of both Congress and the
courts, not to overthrow the Constitution but to overthrow the men who pervert the Constitution."
Lincoln was talking about how the people control the government, and the people should not try to
overthrow the government (since they control it). The Magna Carta blazed the trail for due process,
coming out of a tyranny. John Locke brought about the ideas of natural rights, while the Mayflower
Compact showed that a group of people could work together to be part of a thriving, self–
government. The Magna Carta, John Locke, and the Mayflower Compact's idea on government;
which influenced the American government, by its ideas on rights and the social contract, made
American society want to gain rights and make a fair, equal government, due to the British
government restricting rights. In England, King John was restricting the citizens' rights,
consequently the nobles rebelled against King John. In 1215 AD, the nobles forced King John to
sign a document called the "Magna Carta" (or "Great Charter" in English). The Magna Carta tried to
enforce the concepts of rule of law, trial by jury, and limited government. Due process is a fair trial
by your peers and a speedy trial, which makes it less likely for an unjust trial. This concept is
reflected in the United States Constitution: Clause 39 of the Manga Carta states, "No free man is to
be arrested, or imprisoned, or disseised, or outlawed, or exiled, or in any other way ruined, nor will
we go against him or send against him, except by the lawful judgment of his peers or by the law of
the land." The Manga Carta is saying that you need to have a trial by jury. Article 2, Section 3 of the
United States Constitution, the document that formed the American government, states: "The Trial
of all Crimes; except in Cases of Impeachment, shall be by Jury." The Constitution was denoting
that a citizen has the right to a trial by jury, parallel to the Manga Carta. A trial by jury is an
important concept in a government, because it allows people to be tried justly. If

In 1620, the Pilgrim leaders, who came to America on the ship the Mayflower, wrote the Mayflower
Compact. The original document was lost, however a copy of it that was written in William
Bradford's journal, was found. ("Pilgrim Hall Museum...") The Pilgrims were originally going to
land in Virginia, but their ship got off course due to a storm. Instead, the Pilgrims and crewmembers
of the ship landed in Cape Cod. They later became known as the Plymouth Colony. (Foner, 66) The
Pilgrim leaders wrote the Mayflower Compact when they landed in Cape Cod. The men aboard the
Mayflower ship signed the Mayflower Compact, which was named for the ship. ("Pilgrim Hall

The passengers of the Mayflower had received a patent or charter for settlement in Virginia.
However, since they were in New England, they felt that the patent no longer was valid. This reason
and the fact that the colonists were no longer under the control of English rule, inspired them to

Its type being that it was a self–governing document. The most important effect the Mayflower
Compact has had on America is that it was the first known document that was an example of a self–
governing system in the history of America. This is significant because later this document would be
an inspiration to the men who wrote the U.S constitution. Many historians consider the Mayflower
Compact as a precursor to the U.S constitution. The Mayflower Compact was one of the first
examples of independence in colonial America. That independence is now what sets the U.S apart
from many other countries. It was also the first time English settlers would not be directly under the
control of the English law. Thus, in time where religion was regulated, the Mayflower Compact was
also setting a new precedent of freedom of religion. Freedom of religion is now one of the most
important aspects of the American freedom. ("Mayflower

The History Of The Mayflower Compact : 1620
Mayflower Compact: 1620
Major changes were happening in England, unhappy people wanted an escape, separation from the
Church of England and the King himself. So people were taking long, daunting journeys overseas to
the New World in search of a new life and beginning. But, the English were not the only ones
making such journeys to get to the New World, the Spanish were already there, the Dutch were
coming, along with the French. Quite a few countries were fighting over this piece of land to stake a
claim; these colonies were the first steps for each country into the new territory. The first English
colony to be established was Jamestown, it was a test run of sorts to see the environment and the
land, to exploit this 'New World.' It was not very successful in the beginning, but once John Smith
arrived, the colony strater getting better with the help of Pocahontas. This was the beginning of one
colony.
The Mayflower Compact, enacted November 11, 1620, stated that the group of people who settled
in Plymouth, Virginia were required to follow this "civil Body Politick" ("Mayflower Compact :
1620." Avalon Project – Mayflower Compact : 1620) and obey all of the laws for this new colony. It
gave the Pilgrims their own freedom and chance to govern themselves in this new, foreign land. The
compact was in no way an act of defiance to England, they even state in "Honour of our King and
Country" ("Mayflower Compact : 1620." Avalon Project – Mayflower Compact : 1620) which

The Mayflower compact and the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut are two historic, yet very
important documents that have influenced the government we have today.
The first reason the Mayflower Compact and the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut helped shape
our government is the Mayflower Compact was an outline of the first written outline of the U.S.
government. In the Mayflower Compact, the pilgrims that are headed to Virginia, describe
themselves as "a civil body politick" which means that they are unifying themselves, in order to
create laws and make North America more civil. The reasoning for the Pilgrims to unify themselves
as one body is to better their civilization in Virginia.
The Mayflower Compact is written to"constitute and frame" the government for the Pilgrims, and
the Mayflower Compact contains and applies to law, ordinances, and acts that are meant to be
followed by each of the Pilgrims living in northern Virginia. This document exemplifies how the
first body of government in North America came to be, and the first laws, ordinances, etc. that were
instituted, and it represents how the Mayflower Compact was a basis, and an influence on today's
government. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Essay on Plymouth and Jamestown: Government, Power, and...
The Jamestown and Plymouth settlements were both settled in the early 1600's. Plymouth and
Jamestown were located along the shoreline in Massachusetts and Virginia, respectively. Although
both had different forms of government, they both had strong leadership. Jamestown was controlled
by the London Company, who wanted to profit from the venture, while the Puritans who settled at
Plymouth were self–governed with an early form of democracy and settled in the New World to gain
religious freedom. John Smith took charge in efforts to organize Jamestown, and at Plymouth
William Bradford helped things run smoothly.

The ideas in the Mayflower Compact were later transferred into the Declaration of Independence
and gave footing for democracy in America.
However remarkable or pathetic the two government systems were, it is unlikely either colony
would have survived without their leaders. In Plymouth, William Bradford was elected as the first
governor. He also provided firm leadership, but still very few colonists complained that he was too
controlling. Bradford even wrote a history of the first thirty years of the colony, which was later
published in a book titled Of Plymouth Plantation. John Smith did not write a history of Jamestown
but he did encourage colonists to work at tasks that were required to live instead of hunting for gold.
He even became an expert at trading with the Indians to acquire much needed food.
The Puritans leaders also lead them into the proper settings to encourage their faith instead of
tearing it down. At first they went to Holland in 1608, but when this turned out to be unsuitable they
made preparations to leave. In 1620 they set sail for the New World to seek the religious freedom
they dreamed of, but had been deprived of in England. The Jamestown colony, on the other hand,
did not care about religious freedom, but only about the money that could be earned from resources
in the New World. This goal can even be seen in the first charter for the

The Pilgrims signed the Mayflower Compact, in Cape Cod, on November 11th,1620. The
Mayflower Compact emphasizes the idea of being together as one and evidently, the compact states,
"A voyage to plant the first colony in the northern parts of Virginia, do by these presents solemnly
and mutually, in the presence of God, and one of another," This quote holds importance because it
discusses how the Mayflower Compact is mostly an agreement between the Pilgrims and God so
they can all learn to be united. This way they could build a relationship with God, by all sharing
respect for each other. This later allowed the people to respect each other and abide by the rules of
the government. Later, the Compact discussed combining as one union, instead of thinking about the
individuals who make up the union, by stating, "Combine ourselves together into a civil body
politic, for our better ordering and preservation and furtherance of the ends aforesaid; and by virtue
hereof to enact, constitute, and frame such just and equal laws, ordinances, acts, constitutions." This
quote is import in American history because, it is now evident that the rules stated in the the
Mayflower Compact were not followed. When Americans did not abide by these rules society

Puritans Impact On American Society
The name, American Society, represents a society that many believed was shaped by America itself.
However, Puritanism shaped America's ethical and political views, and the Great Awaken shaped the
people's belief on religious freedom in the nation. Therefore, these events did not only shape the
time prior to the Civil War, but shaped America for times to come. Puritans did a variety of things
for America, other than make people of this age think they're some Pharisees or some weird freaks
over religion. They actually helped in contributing Americans' devotion to the practice of education.
Puritans had a zeal for education and that zeal was founded in their origins. In the view of the
Puritans, the Bible was their central to Christian education. They desired education and
enlightenment for everyone, especially the common people. They wanted people to be able to read
and understand the Bible for themselves in order perspire in the wondrous religion they call their
life. Reading of the Bible was necessary to living a devoted life to God. The education of the next
generation was important to further "purify" the church and perfect social living in order to enter the
gates of heaven. This view goes back to Martin Luther's idea, who stated, "Above all, the foremost
reading for everybody, both in the universities and in the schools, should be Holy Scripture... I
would advise no one to send his child where the Holy Scriptures are not supreme." Once the
Puritans ventured to the

The Mayflower Compact was signed by forty–one men; all English colonists on the ship Mayflower
on November 11, 1620. This was the primary written outline of government established in what is
now called the United States. The main person responsible for this was William Bradford. This
document finally provided them the equal rights that they desired in their escape from England. The
Mayflower Compact was the first Self–Governing document even America bases its constitution.
The Mayflower Compact expressed four main ideals. Number one was to express the deep faith and
belief in God and His divine guidance, which was held so dear to the Pilgrim Fathers. It expressed
deep loyalty to native England and to the king, regardless of his actions to persecute the exiled
pilgrims. It expressed mutual regard for one another as equals in the sight of God. It expressed intent
to establish just and equal laws upon which would be built a truly democratic form of government,
the first recorded in history.
This document clarifies how the individuals on the Mayflower were bound together by this
agreement, under God. The document likewise states that everyone is equal under these rules. The
United States of America is built upon the idea that everyone under the rules of the United States
Government is equal. The Constitution of the United States was organized by the people not a
government. The American government is supposed to represent the people and serve them. The

Following the creation of the Mayflower compact, John Carver was the first elected governor of
Plymouth. However, he died during the first winter and was succeeded by William Bradford. He
was elected in 1621 and served for over eleven years in total. The colony was able to survive and
become self–sufficient for numerous years. However, by the 1640s, Plymouth's fur trade had
dissipated and they became increasingly more of a theocracy. In an attempt to make more money,
the leaders of the colony, William Bradford, Thomas Prence, and Edward Winslow, established a
state church which required the people to pay taxes to the church as well as fines for not attending
church. Despite their efforts, Pilgrim ministers still lacked sufficient money.

The Mayflower Rebellion
The first Pilgrims in America set sail from England on the Mayflower in September 1620. More
than 100 people were aboard the ship, many of them seeking religious freedom in the New World. In
November the ship landed on the shores of Cape Cod which in present day would be called
Massachusetts. The intended destination was near the Hudson River in Virginia, an already
established colony. They sent out a search party toward the end of December to look for the group of
passengers but the pilgrims had landed at Plymouth Harbor by mistake.
Originally there was another ship that set sail along with the Mayflower called the Speedwell. The
smaller vessel was not able to make the journey so it returned to port by September. A few important
people travelled on the Mayflower including Myles Standish, a soldier who became the military
leader of the new colony. Also, William Bradford whom founded the Plymouth Colony and was the
leader of the Separatist congregation. The Mayflower Compact was signed by 41 men while they
were still on the Mayflower. The document would become the foundation of the new colony's

The Leiden Pilgrims: The Mayflower Compact On November 11, 1620, after a dangerous Atlantic
voyage the Mayflower landed at Cape Cod far north of Boston; their intended destination. Due to
unrest and conflict aboard the Mayflower a Compact was written by the Leiden Pilgrims during the
voyage. These Pilgrims were known in England as Separatists and they wished to separate from the
Church of England; the Separatists called the other men who joined their ship Strangers because
they were of different faith. This first governing document recognizes the need to live peacefully
together; therefore, they agreed that a corporate government or 'civil body politic' was for their
collective benefit. In his book Of Plymouth Plantation William Bradford writes about the new
settlement. This book contains one of the first known copies of the compact. The Leiden Pilgrims
began their journey for religious freedom in the small village of Scrooby, England. They fled to
Amsterdam, Holland later moving to Leiden, for the religious freedom they wanted. They lived
happily, but they wished to have more freedom and less temptations for their children. Therefore,
they sent several men from their congregation to ask permission for a patent in America. Permission

Exploratons and Colonization of North and South America...
Exploration and colonization of North and South America were ultimately not beneficial in the 15th
and 16th centuries because it wiped out many cultures and did more harm than good. First of all, the
Europeans forcibly converted the Natives to Christianity. This had a great negative impact because it
resulted in the loss of native cultures. Over time, many Native American languages started to
disappear from common use and English took over. Many may argue that colonization and
exploration were important because of the Columbian Exchange that arose from it, however diseases
and the slave trade also came from the Columbian exchange. I believe that the death of millions was

there were some colonies that did not practice religious tolerance, the majority of the colonies did

unnecessary and could have been avoided. Men like Columbus and Cortes treated the Natives with a

William Bradford Journey To The New World Essay

prevent either William Bradford or the English pilgrims on the Mayflower from setting aside all
fears and taking on the expedition. Contemplating the difficulties of venturing to the new world,
William Bradford set out in search of religious freedom. Numerous factors contributed to his final
decision. Bradford anticipated the journey to be perilous and difficult to accomplish. However, he
believed that with the help of God he might be able to overcome the challenges and complete the

His expectations fell short when they experienced poverty and religious disagreements, and the
children were converting to the manners of the Dutch society. Since his expectations fell short in
Holland, Bradford is most likely biased toward the way of life in the New World. He and the group
of Puritans had traveled over water to Holland, but their trip was not as distant as the New World.
Without knowing what was to happen, Bradford automatically assumed the worst. Torn by the deep
yearning for religious freedom, misfortunes in Holland, and possible dangers overseas, Bradford and
the group of Puritans went against all judgment and decided to risk the journey. Bradford's writing is
only limited to assumptions and rumors. Having not actually been to the new land and have not
travelled over the waters, he could only rely on the information he heard as well as what he had
imagined in his mind. As Bradford expressed his concerns and emotions prior to the expedition, he
left out any logical predictions and situations about the new and unknown location. All he writes
about is fear and the images he thinks of in regard to the fear. Bradford's writing is somewhat
accurate in how it portrays the influence of anxiety and how individuals expect the worse of what
they do not know. His perspective deeply shows the raw emotion of what the pilgrims experienced

"The several colonies before mentioned do meet . . . at least once intwo [sic] years in times of peace
. . . two persons . . . be appointed by each province as their representatives or deputies, which in the
whole make the congress," (Doc 4). Even before Penn's plan was published, the need for
representation took root in 1619 at the House of Burgesses. The importance of representation and a
congress was nothing new to colonial America and has existed as a desire of almost every colonist.
Its importance continued into 1754 with the Albany Plan of Union, yet another important written
document that described government's state and importance vital period. This plan adopted some of
the most important parts of the constitution that would be written twenty years after Albany,
including, "a President–General, to be appointed and supported by the crown" (Doc 5) and "That for
these purposes they have power to make laws, and lay and levy such general duties, imposts, or
taxes, as to them shall appear most equal and just," (Doc 5). The Albany Plan of Union dictated

William Bradford Vs John Smith Essay
In the early 1509's–1850's there were two Englishmen named John Smith and William Bradford that
established in the colonies of British who came to the New World to share a common culture. These
two men wrote journals, talking about what had happened to them in the past months and what they
went through. Although they struggled and faced many challenges they did their best in order for
them to survive for example, they had starvation times and although they would starve he would do
his best. Bradford and Smith presented different accounts of the life on land and talked about an
ideal vision of what the new land could be with the best of people colonizing the new land. Both
wrote of their experience in America, were Europeans, and desired to settle the land. However, the
similarities end there–while Smith roamed Virginia as a scout and a military man, Bradford planted
his church community in Plymouth. John Smith was born in January 1850 in Willough New

Early American History Essay
Early American History
Unity within colonies was extremely strong because it was assembled in a primal urge for survival.
The colonists were in this entirely new land, so it was natural they would stick together to the
familiar, and therefore build strong bonds and loyalty to their colony. Exclusion also excellently
describes early America because of the way colonies expelled their own people if they did not
follow the colony's strict ‘rules' of life. The primary source documents; "City upon a Hill", "Ann
Hutchinson's Trial", "Founding Of The Iroquois League", and "The Mayflower Compact" are all
brilliant examples of this contradictory yet surprisingly honest view of early American history. Early
American History should be remembered as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One must remember, thought, that in Puritan Massachusetts, the Church and the State were one.
This is precisely why Ann Hutchinson is being tried in a state court for crossing Puritan doctrine.
Governor John Winthrop is saying that, according to Puritan doctrine, to become acquainted with
someone of a religion other than Puritanism, it puts to shame the parents of this sinner and the
dishonors the whole Puritan colony. This is quite indicative of exclusion because the Puritans
stopped everyone of their faith from friendly interaction with someone of a different faith. The
unjust and severe punishment was that they were to be banished from the colony, their family, their
friends, and their church. This is what happened to Ann Hutchinson. She was excluded from her
whole life all because she quietly questioned some of the Church's decisions and didn't take kindly
the spoon–fed Puritan principles.
Early American History should be remembered as a time of unity as well as exclusion because in
each separate colony, they had to unite to stay alive. They united in grief over trials and tribulations,
such as mass numbers of death, especially in the early colonies, and hunger. They also united in
their joys, such as maybe a good harvest, and in their faith. Faith was a huge unison factor.

Why Did The Mayflower Compact
In 1620, a ship called the Mayflower arrived to the New World, with forty–one pilgrims aboard. The
forty–one pilgrims were made up of Anglicans, Separatists, and Puritans, who hated each other. The
Separatists and Puritans were on this journey for religious freedom, and the Anglicans were there for
economic reasons. There was a problem though, they arrived to Cape Cod, Massachusetts when
their jurisdiction was Virginia, hence the voyage was sponsored by the Virginia Company. This
meant that they were not under the King's rules, since they're not in the jurisdiction assigned by him.
The pilgrims decided that they were not to leave the boat unless they have a certain set of rules in
which they all agreed upon to govern themselves. That's when ... Show more content on

It's the first framework of self government created and enforced in the New World. It helped future
colonists create their own government, and it shaped the nation that eventually became the United
States of America. Many of the main formal documents that were written later on were based off of
that one. The existence of this documents is also the main reason Plymouth succeeded. There would
have been catastrophic results without these rules. Without the Compact, these pilgrims would've
killed each other. They didn't like each other because their strong religious beliefs were so different.
The Puritans thought that the Anglican religion was so bad that they had to 'purify' it, and the
Separatists thought that they had to separate themselves from the Anglicans because of how wrong
they were. These 3 religions were basically enemies, and they weren't under the king's jurisdiction
so they could've easily turned on each other. But the Mayflower Compact was meant to help
establish a stable settlement. It states that they are there for God and that they will work together to
be successful. These rules were meant to be followed by the pilgrims, and they were. Without the
structure that the compact provided peace would not have occurred between these different
religions. The result would have been Plymouth's failure, and who knows, maybe they would have
given up and we could have known a history in which the 13

three versions exist from the 17th century: printed in Mort's Relation, which was reprinted in
Purchas his Pilgrims', it was written by William Bradford in his journal Of Plymouth Plantation, and
printed by Bradford's nephew Nathaniel Morton in New–England's Memorial. The three versions
differ slightly in wording and significantly in spelling, capitalization and punctuation. William
Bradford wrote the first part of Mort's Relation, including its version of the compact, so he wrote
two of the three versions. The wording of those two versions is indeed quite similar, unlike that of
Morton. Bradford's handwritten manuscript is kept in a vault at the State Library of Massachusetts.

Why Did The Mayflower Compact
In the fall of 1620, nearly 100 religious separatists known as Pilgrims left England to settle an
American colony free from the constraints of the Anglican Church of England. The group had
received a patent from the King of England to settle near the mouth of the Hudson River in New
York. Due to storms during the voyage, they landed further north, near Plymouth Massachusetts, in
November 1620. They agreed to settle in Massachusetts and apply for a new patent from the King.
While the Pilgrims waited on the new patent, they needed a new structure to maintain order and
establish a civil society. Therefore, all of the male Pilgrims developed the Mayflower Compact, to
provide a basic governance structure. In this short document, there is a key passages with
foundational ideas which were important to the survival of the Plymouth colony, and shaped the
future democratic governance structures of America. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Without the governing rules and regulations outlined in the patent, the governance and rule of the
territory was in question. The Pilgrims were afraid that some of the passengers, called "Strangers"
because they had travelled to the new world for non–religious reasons, "would insist upon complete
freedom" ashore (Sargent 236). In order for the settlement to survive, the Pilgrims needed a way to
govern and maintain peace amongst themselves. The compact was designed to as an "attempt to
squelch faction and to insure unity and concord so that the plantation might survive" (Sargent 236).

William Bradford was part of a separatist group that set apart from the Church of England.
Additionally, he played a large role in the establishment of the Mayflower Compact. The Mayflower
Compact was the first independent form of civil government, that eventually developed into a
democratic form of government. Throughout the development, Bradford attempts to justify the
formation of the government by showering the audience with beneficial attributes. Some of these
attributes include advancement of the Christian faith, improvement for ordering and preservation,
and furtherance of the ends.

Mayflower Compact Analysis
In the early years of 1607–1620, Separatists broke free from the Church of England and decided to
make a grueling journey to America aboard the Mayflower, all for religious freedom. After finally
doing so, the pilgrims believed that God put them in the New World to live as a true Christian
Community in the New World. They were content with living their life in Godly ways and they
spoke of serving as a model for other Christians. In 1534, England broke ties with the Roman
Catholic Church and formed the Church of England. Protestants, also known as, "Puritans," wished
to reform the church to "purify" it of Catholic traditions that they believed were not biblical.

and the United Sates Constitution. Although the original document does not live, it appears in
Mourt's Relation, a pamphlet on the first year of settlement on Plymouth. For what we know, the
text of the Mayflower compact said something like: In the name of God, Amen. We whose names
are under–written, the loyal subjects of our dread sovereign Lord, King James, by the grace of God,
of Great Britain, France, and Ireland King, Defender of the Faith, etc. Having undertaken, for the

Why Was The Mayflower Compact
Most of the settlers who came to America were not in search of wealth, but of freedom of religion.
After many religious wars including the Protestant Reformation, settlers eventually decided to create
a written document that would aim for general good in the colony as a whole. This document was
called the Mayflower Compact, which led the colony to a prosperous future. Back in England, King
Charles I gave a certain group of Puritans permission to create a joint stock company. One man
named John Winthrop, along with many other Puritans, believed that the morals in England were out
of sorts. As a result, they left and came to America where they created the "city upon a hill" which
was intended to be a model society for how everyone and every community should live. Roger
Williams and Anne Hutchinson were dissenters from this group who were both banished.
1. Why was the Mayflower Compact significant? The Mayflower Compact caused settlers to further
promise to abide by the laws that were created to benefit the people and the general good of the
colony. The Mayflower Compact was the written document in which the settlers wrote their own
laws and restrictions and chose officials and authority figures. The Mayflower Compact set a
precedent for future generations because, even now, Americans abide by the laws that are on a

society could be a model for all communities around them, and that all eyes would be on them. The

The Pilgrims and the Settlement of the Early American Colonies
When the new world was discovered, the people who were to first settle there were supposed to
achieve fame, farmland, and a better life. They came to practice religion freely, to escape
persecution, become land owners, and establish trading businesses. Now while people believed that
they would have a better life in the new world, in reality life there was just as hard, if not harder. But
was all this worth the price of their lives? Had they any idea of the hardship, sickness and famine
that would be inflicted on them? They didn't, because no one told them about how deadly the
journey they were about to embark on was. From the start the pilgrims had bad fortune. ... Show

. ." The people who wrote this were Puritans who wanted to "advance the Christan faith" by
purifying the church of England. Because they practiced religion differently than the majority of
people in England, they were persecuted. So the New World seemed like a good place where they
could escape the persecution and practice their religion freely. According to a population chart
produced by the U.S. Bureau of the Census, there were hardly any people in the New World to
persecute them at the time. For the Puritans the New World sounded like an incredible opportunity.
When the Virginia Company wasn't making money in the New World, they wanted to attract more
colonists and gain funds in order to keep the colony alive. An article in the Library of Congress
website (http://memory.loc.gov) claims that Nova Britannia was a pamphlet written as part of the
Virginia Company's public relations campaign because stockholders of the company were
disappointed with the results of Jamestown. This pamphlet promised excellent fruits, farmland and
further fame to all who settled there. For any common man struggling in England and in need of
money to support his family, it sounded as if easy money could be made off of the "Excellent

Reasons for Colonial Migration were Gold Glory, and God
Migration from one place to another place has many causes and many effects. The main reasons for
migration are gold, glory, and god. Gold, because people wanted to make money. Glory was in order
to get positions in government in the new place. God was to escape religious persecution. Another
area of migration was also slaves to go work the land. Many groups migrated to the New World
from many different places, for many different reasons, and had many effects on the New World.
Two groups of migration are the Pilgrims, and the Quakers. Both groups came to the New World
mainly for god, although they were probably motivated by other things.
The Pilgrims came to the New World because they wanted to worship freely, something they could
not do in England. In England, there was no religious tolerance. Religious tolerance is a country's
willingness to understand a religion that is not their own. They felt that the Anglican Church could
not be purified, or made better, so they decided to look for another place to practice their religion.
They also migrated because they were having economic difficulties. So, in 1620, a group of Pilgrims
got on a boat called The Mayflower, sponsored by the Joint Stock Company, a company that
sponsored voyages to America in exchange for 4/5 of the gold supposedly found in the colonies, and
set sail to the New World.
On the ship, the Pilgrims decided to make a pact to create unity, pledge loyalty to the king, establish

Mayflower Compact Essay
The Mayflower Compact and the first constitution of Pennsylvania were both very important in
maintaining peace and order in their respective colonies. Despite the fact that both documents are
written by religious men, the difference in the number of religious references sets the two apart. In
addition to this, the way they both address the English government is contrasted in both of these
official documents. Despite these differences, the underlying theme that the best way to govern the
colonies is through a form of self–government, ties both the Compact and the Constitution together.
Although similar in many ways, it is their differences between the Compact and the first clause of
the Pennsylvanian Constitution that makes them unique.
It is not surprising, considering the reasons for the creation of the colonies, that both colonies were
created for religious freedom. Therefore, it is safe to assume that the founding fathers of both were
religious men. However, the pilgrims that signed the Mayflower Compact were more inclined to
mention God in their document compared to those that penned the Constitution of Pennsylvania. In
every line, except for the last two, of the compact the word "God" appears. However, in the main

Pennsylvania drafted their document during the revolutionary war and consequently regarded the
king with no respect. They used phrases such as "the despotic domination of the British Parliament"
when referring to the English government. Such contrasting points of view of British authority is the

Differences Between New England And The Chesapeake Colonies
New England and the Chesapeake region were both settled largely by people of English origin, but
by the 1700's they were two distinct societies. They differed politically, economically, and socially,
and these differences stemmed from when people first arrived in the colonies to how the colonies
grew over time.
The first difference between the New England colonies and the Chesapeake colonies was political.
The New England colonies had a more democratic government system; while it was not completely
democratic or representative it had a basis of democratic principals. Alternatively, the Chesapeake
colonies were largely run by aristocratic leaders rather than the people working together for the
common good. Document A explains how the New England colonies had more of a democracy by
stating "we must be willing to abridge ourselves... for the supply of others necessities," it also states
"we are to be looked at as a city upon a hill." This is relevant to why New England colonies were
more democratic because this comes from John Winthrop who was on his way to America to the
New England colonies. This more democratic mindset politically from the New England colonies
stems back to the Mayflower Compact that was written when the pilgrims were on their way to
America, explaining the first difference in these two colonial regions because there were no
democratic government documents created for when people were going to the Chesapeake colonies.

Essay On The Mayflower Compact
The creation the Mayflower compact was a very significant event in the history of the United States
because of its example of a the first type of government in North America. The Mayflower Compact
was draw up by a group of people known as Pilgrims in 1620. These people, mostly English, were
in search of more religious freedom and better lives in the New World. 100 pilgrims began this
journey in September of 1620 (History.com staff). Before, landing in New England, the Pilgrims
signed the Mayflower Compact. This legal document created "just and equal Laws, Ordinances,
Acts, Constitutions and Offices" (History.com staff). This was the first example of a self–
government in the New World. The founding fathers would later use many of the ideas in the
Mayflower Compact in other governing documents such as the Declaration of Independence and the
United States Constitution. Through these examples, it is clear that the Mayflower Compact is
significant to American history because it provided many ideas of self government that are still used
in our governing documents today.
The Revolutionary War also has great significance to the United States because without the war, this
nation would not be free from British rule. As time went on, more and more colonists under British
rule came to North America and formed the 13 colonies. Under King George III, the people of these
13 colonies were taxed by legislature such as the Stamp Act and the Tea Act. Not only were these
taxes very high,

The Mayflower Compact As A Huge Factor In Today's Society
The Mayflower Compact was the first governing document that the people signed in the Americas,
and ever since then nothing has been the same. Since November 21, 1620 America has used The
Mayflower Compact as a sort of 'template' or 'reference' for some of the later documents such as the
Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights.
The Mayflower Compact established the United States as a literary society, and represents what
literature is. The Puritans are the reason why documents are such a huge factor in today's society.
The literary critic Perry Miller wrote, "...Because their societies were tightly organized, and above
all because they were highly articulate people, the New Englanders established Puritanism – for
better or worse– as one of the continuous factors in American life and thought" (The American
Puritans ix, 1956). The Puritans were very much so organized and articulate people. When they
landed at Cape Cod, they knew they needed to establish something so everyone can be on the same
page and to make it legal, so they derived the Mayflower Compact. Doing this solidified their stay
because they were governed by text, much like in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

This compact is why the United States is a nation of contractual obligation. This is why we feel the

the mayflower for multiple reasons, such as religious freedoms and civil freedoms. We could also
see this theme in a document 150 years later, the Declaration of Independence. The mayflower
compact allowed them to be there but it did not free them from British rule. This is why they had to
derive another 'compact' or document to free themselves. The same reason they colonized the no

How Did William Bradford Influence The Mayflower Voyage

  • 1. How Did William Bradford Influence The Mayflower Voyage Bradford helped organize the Mayflower voyage in 1620, which about 100 people joined to separate from The Church of England. "Of Plymouth Plantation" was written by Bradford in which he described the journey to the "New World" and some aspects of the Pilgrim's life. William Bradford's purpose of writing this historical account ("Of Plymouth Plantation") was to inform readers of the future generations that would come to the New World about the hardships the Pilgrims had to endure, so generations to come would not have to go through the same sufferings; Bradford expresses fear/distrust and civility of his fellow Pilgrims through the use of tone. The Pilgrims separated from The Church of England and concealed their Puritan beliefs, which was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

What years did the most colonists die in Jamestown? Back in Jamestown in the year of 1609 the settlers arrived at Jamestown. Jamestown was located in Virginia in the years of 1609 to 1611. The English settlers went to Jamestown because they wanted to find other land (new land) to stay on.The Settlers that went to Jamestown are English settlers that came from England back in the 1600's. Why did so many Colonists die in Jamestown during the years 1609 to 1611. The colonists died in 1607 to 1611 is because of the Indians, The Environment, And The Colonists themselves. The first reasons why the so many colonists died in 1607 to 1611 is because of the environment. The environment was bad in the early 1600's because of the drought that Jamestown had. The colonists were bathing, cleaning, drinking, and washing their pots in the brackish water. THe brackish water had a lot to do with how most of the colonists died because of the brackish water. ... • 5. The Magna Carta, John Locke, And The Mayflower Compact-The... The Magna Carta, John Locke, and the Mayflower Compact––The Creators of Government President Abraham Lincoln said, "We the people are the rightful masters of both Congress and the courts, not to overthrow the Constitution but to overthrow the men who pervert the Constitution." Lincoln was talking about how the people control the government, and the people should not try to overthrow the government (since they control it). The Magna Carta blazed the trail for due process, coming out of a tyranny. John Locke brought about the ideas of natural rights, while the Mayflower Compact showed that a group of people could work together to be part of a thriving, self– government. The Magna Carta, John Locke, and the Mayflower Compact's idea on government; which influenced the American government, by its ideas on rights and the social contract, made American society want to gain rights and make a fair, equal government, due to the British government restricting rights. In England, King John was restricting the citizens' rights, consequently the nobles rebelled against King John. In 1215 AD, the nobles forced King John to sign a document called the "Magna Carta" (or "Great Charter" in English). The Magna Carta tried to enforce the concepts of rule of law, trial by jury, and limited government. Due process is a fair trial by your peers and a speedy trial, which makes it less likely for an unjust trial. This concept is reflected in the United States Constitution: Clause 39 of the Manga Carta states, "No free man is to be arrested, or imprisoned, or disseised, or outlawed, or exiled, or in any other way ruined, nor will we go against him or send against him, except by the lawful judgment of his peers or by the law of the land." The Manga Carta is saying that you need to have a trial by jury. Article 2, Section 3 of the United States Constitution, the document that formed the American government, states: "The Trial of all Crimes; except in Cases of Impeachment, shall be by Jury." The Constitution was denoting that a citizen has the right to a trial by jury, parallel to the Manga Carta. A trial by jury is an important concept in a government, because it allows people to be tried justly. If ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Mayflower Compact Research Paper In 1620, the Pilgrim leaders, who came to America on the ship the Mayflower, wrote the Mayflower Compact. The original document was lost, however a copy of it that was written in William Bradford's journal, was found. ("Pilgrim Hall Museum...") The Pilgrims were originally going to land in Virginia, but their ship got off course due to a storm. Instead, the Pilgrims and crewmembers of the ship landed in Cape Cod. They later became known as the Plymouth Colony. (Foner, 66) The Pilgrim leaders wrote the Mayflower Compact when they landed in Cape Cod. The men aboard the Mayflower ship signed the Mayflower Compact, which was named for the ship. ("Pilgrim Hall Museum...") The passengers of the Mayflower had received a patent or charter for settlement in Virginia. However, since they were in New England, they felt that the patent no longer was valid. This reason and the fact that the colonists were no longer under the control of English rule, inspired them to write the Mayflower Compact. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Its type being that it was a self–governing document. The most important effect the Mayflower Compact has had on America is that it was the first known document that was an example of a self– governing system in the history of America. This is significant because later this document would be an inspiration to the men who wrote the U.S constitution. Many historians consider the Mayflower Compact as a precursor to the U.S constitution. The Mayflower Compact was one of the first examples of independence in colonial America. That independence is now what sets the U.S apart from many other countries. It was also the first time English settlers would not be directly under the control of the English law. Thus, in time where religion was regulated, the Mayflower Compact was also setting a new precedent of freedom of religion. Freedom of religion is now one of the most important aspects of the American freedom. ("Mayflower ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. The History Of The Mayflower Compact : 1620 Mayflower Compact: 1620 Major changes were happening in England, unhappy people wanted an escape, separation from the Church of England and the King himself. So people were taking long, daunting journeys overseas to the New World in search of a new life and beginning. But, the English were not the only ones making such journeys to get to the New World, the Spanish were already there, the Dutch were coming, along with the French. Quite a few countries were fighting over this piece of land to stake a claim; these colonies were the first steps for each country into the new territory. The first English colony to be established was Jamestown, it was a test run of sorts to see the environment and the land, to exploit this 'New World.' It was not very successful in the beginning, but once John Smith arrived, the colony strater getting better with the help of Pocahontas. This was the beginning of one colony. The Mayflower Compact, enacted November 11, 1620, stated that the group of people who settled in Plymouth, Virginia were required to follow this "civil Body Politick" ("Mayflower Compact : 1620." Avalon Project – Mayflower Compact : 1620) and obey all of the laws for this new colony. It gave the Pilgrims their own freedom and chance to govern themselves in this new, foreign land. The compact was in no way an act of defiance to England, they even state in "Honour of our King and Country" ("Mayflower Compact : 1620." • 11. Mayflower Compact Research Paper The Mayflower compact and the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut are two historic, yet very important documents that have influenced the government we have today. The first reason the Mayflower Compact and the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut helped shape our government is the Mayflower Compact was an outline of the first written outline of the U.S. government. In the Mayflower Compact, the pilgrims that are headed to Virginia, describe themselves as "a civil body politick" which means that they are unifying themselves, in order to create laws and make North America more civil. The reasoning for the Pilgrims to unify themselves as one body is to better their civilization in Virginia. The Mayflower Compact is written to"constitute and frame" the government for the Pilgrims, and the Mayflower Compact contains and applies to law, ordinances, and acts that are meant to be followed by each of the Pilgrims living in northern Virginia. This document exemplifies how the first body of government in North America came to be, and the first laws, ordinances, etc. that were instituted, and it represents how the Mayflower Compact was a basis, and an influence on today's government. ... • 13. Essay on Plymouth and Jamestown: Government, Power, and... The Jamestown and Plymouth settlements were both settled in the early 1600's. Plymouth and Jamestown were located along the shoreline in Massachusetts and Virginia, respectively. Although both had different forms of government, they both had strong leadership. Jamestown was controlled by the London Company, who wanted to profit from the venture, while the Puritans who settled at Plymouth were self–governed with an early form of democracy and settled in the New World to gain religious freedom. John Smith took charge in efforts to organize Jamestown, and at Plymouth William Bradford helped things run smoothly. The settlement of Jamestown was controlled by the London Company. The London Company, for the most part, had full control of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The ideas in the Mayflower Compact were later transferred into the Declaration of Independence and gave footing for democracy in America. However remarkable or pathetic the two government systems were, it is unlikely either colony would have survived without their leaders. In Plymouth, William Bradford was elected as the first governor. He also provided firm leadership, but still very few colonists complained that he was too controlling. Bradford even wrote a history of the first thirty years of the colony, which was later published in a book titled Of Plymouth Plantation. John Smith did not write a history of Jamestown but he did encourage colonists to work at tasks that were required to live instead of hunting for gold. He even became an expert at trading with the Indians to acquire much needed food. The Puritans leaders also lead them into the proper settings to encourage their faith instead of tearing it down. At first they went to Holland in 1608, but when this turned out to be unsuitable they made preparations to leave. In 1620 they set sail for the New World to seek the religious freedom they dreamed of, but had been deprived of in England. The Jamestown colony, on the other hand, did not care about religious freedom, but only about the money that could be earned from resources in the New World. Importance Of The Mayflower Compact Dbq SECTION I, Document I: Document Analysis Document title and unit: Unit I–Mayflower Compact Documents are made in order to provide enhancement in society and when these documents are denied and ignored many difficulties eventually occur. In 1620, the year in which the Mayflower Compact was issued, English people fled England to get away from religious persecution and took the Mayflower ship until they landed in what was later known as America. This group of English people were called, Pilgrims. When the Pilgrims came to America they needed to set a form of government to form a "civil body politic." The Pilgrims signed the Mayflower Compact, in Cape Cod, on November 11th,1620. The Mayflower Compact emphasizes the idea of being together as one and evidently, the compact states, "A voyage to plant the first colony in the northern parts of Virginia, do by these presents solemnly and mutually, in the presence of God, and one of another," This quote holds importance because it discusses how the Mayflower Compact is mostly an agreement between the Pilgrims and God so they can all learn to be united. This way they could build a relationship with God, by all sharing respect for each other. This later allowed the people to respect each other and abide by the rules of the government. Later, the Compact discussed combining as one union, instead of thinking about the individuals who make up the union, by stating, "Combine ourselves together into a civil body politic, for our better ordering and preservation and furtherance of the ends aforesaid; and by virtue hereof to enact, constitute, and frame such just and equal laws, ordinances, acts, constitutions." Eventually the thirteen colonies expanded, which brought an economical benefit and expanded trade for Britain. However, in the mid–1700s, Britain pushed the colonists to their limits, imposing them with unfair taxes. As a result, in 1775, colonists revolted in the American Revolution. When the war ended, colonists gained their freedom, from Britain, with the signing of The Treaty of Paris (1783). • 21. Puritans Impact On American Society The name, American Society, represents a society that many believed was shaped by America itself. However, Puritanism shaped America's ethical and political views, and the Great Awaken shaped the people's belief on religious freedom in the nation. Therefore, these events did not only shape the time prior to the Civil War, but shaped America for times to come. Puritans did a variety of things for America, other than make people of this age think they're some Pharisees or some weird freaks over religion. They actually helped in contributing Americans' devotion to the practice of education. Puritans had a zeal for education and that zeal was founded in their origins. In the view of the Puritans, the Bible was their central to Christian education. They desired education and enlightenment for everyone, especially the common people. They wanted people to be able to read and understand the Bible for themselves in order perspire in the wondrous religion they call their life. Reading of the Bible was necessary to living a devoted life to God. The education of the next generation was important to further "purify" the church and perfect social living in order to enter the gates of heaven. This view goes back to Martin Luther's idea, who stated, "Above all, the foremost reading for everybody, both in the universities and in the schools, should be Holy Scripture... The Mayflower Compact expressed four main ideals. Number one was to express the deep faith and belief in God and His divine guidance, which was held so dear to the Pilgrim Fathers. It expressed deep loyalty to native England and to the king, regardless of his actions to persecute the exiled pilgrims. It expressed mutual regard for one another as equals in the sight of God. It expressed intent to establish just and equal laws upon which would be built a truly democratic form of government, the first recorded in history. This document clarifies how the individuals on the Mayflower were bound together by this agreement, under God. The document likewise states that everyone is equal under these rules. The United States of America is built upon the idea that everyone under the rules of the United States Government is equal. The Constitution of the United States was organized by the people not a government. The American government is supposed to represent the people and serve them. The American form of ... More than 100 people were aboard the ship, many of them seeking religious freedom in the New World. In November the ship landed on the shores of Cape Cod which in present day would be called Massachusetts. The intended destination was near the Hudson River in Virginia, an already established colony. How Did The Mayflower Compact The Leiden Pilgrims: The Mayflower Compact On November 11, 1620, after a dangerous Atlantic voyage the Mayflower landed at Cape Cod far north of Boston; their intended destination. Due to unrest and conflict aboard the Mayflower a Compact was written by the Leiden Pilgrims during the voyage. These Pilgrims were known in England as Separatists and they wished to separate from the Church of England; the Separatists called the other men who joined their ship Strangers because they were of different faith. This first governing document recognizes the need to live peacefully together; therefore, they agreed that a corporate government or 'civil body politic' was for their collective benefit. In his book Of Plymouth Plantation William Bradford writes about the new settlement. This book contains one of the first known copies of the compact. The Leiden Pilgrims began their journey for religious freedom in the small village of Scrooby, England. They fled to Amsterdam, Holland later moving to Leiden, for the religious freedom they wanted. They lived happily, but they wished to have more freedom and less temptations for their children. Therefore, they sent several men from their congregation to ask permission for a patent in America. Exploration and colonization of North and South America were ultimately not beneficial in the 15th and 16th centuries because it wiped out many cultures and did more harm than good. First of all, the Europeans forcibly converted the Natives to Christianity. This had a great negative impact because it resulted in the loss of native cultures. Over time, many Native American languages started to disappear from common use and English took over. The colonists were in this entirely new land, so it was natural they would stick together to the familiar, and therefore build strong bonds and loyalty to their colony. Exclusion also excellently describes early America because of the way colonies expelled their own people if they did not follow the colony's strict ‘rules' of life. This is precisely why Ann Hutchinson is being tried in a state court for crossing Puritan doctrine. Governor John Winthrop is saying that, according to Puritan doctrine, to become acquainted with someone of a religion other than Puritanism, it puts to shame the parents of this sinner and the dishonors the whole Puritan colony. This is quite indicative of exclusion because the Puritans stopped everyone of their faith from friendly interaction with someone of a different faith. The unjust and severe punishment was that they were to be banished from the colony, their family, their friends, and their church. This is what happened to Ann Hutchinson. She was excluded from her whole life all because she quietly questioned some of the Church's decisions and didn't take kindly the spoon–fed Puritan principles. Early American History should be remembered as a time of unity as well as exclusion because in each separate colony, they had to unite to stay alive. They also united in their joys, such as maybe a good harvest, and in their faith. Faith was a huge unison factor. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

After many religious wars including the Protestant Reformation, settlers eventually decided to create a written document that would aim for general good in the colony as a whole. This document was called the Mayflower Compact, which led the colony to a prosperous future. Back in England, King Charles I gave a certain group of Puritans permission to create a joint stock company. He believed that their society could be a model for all communities around them, and that all eyes would be on them. • 64. The Pilgrims and the Settlement of the Early American... The Pilgrims and the Settlement of the Early American Colonies When the new world was discovered, the people who were to first settle there were supposed to achieve fame, farmland, and a better life. They came to practice religion freely, to escape persecution, become land owners, and establish trading businesses. Now while people believed that they would have a better life in the new world, in reality life there was just as hard, if not harder. But was all this worth the price of their lives? Had they any idea of the hardship, sickness and famine that would be inflicted on them? They didn't, because no one told them about how deadly the journey they were about to embark on was. From the start the pilgrims had bad fortune. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... . ." The people who wrote this were Puritans who wanted to "advance the Christan faith" by purifying the church of England. Because they practiced religion differently than the majority of people in England, they were persecuted. So the New World seemed like a good place where they could escape the persecution and practice their religion freely. According to a population chart produced by the U.S. Bureau of the Census, there were hardly any people in the New World to persecute them at the time. For the Puritans the New World sounded like an incredible opportunity. When the Virginia Company wasn't making money in the New World, they wanted to attract more colonists and gain funds in order to keep the colony alive. An article in the Library of Congress website (http://memory.loc.gov) claims that Nova Britannia was a pamphlet written as part of the Virginia Company's public relations campaign because stockholders of the company were disappointed with the results of Jamestown. This pamphlet promised excellent fruits, farmland and further fame to all who settled there. For any common man struggling in England and in need of money to support his family, it sounded as if easy money could be made off of the "Excellent Farmland" in the New World. • 66. Reasons for Colonial Migration were Gold Glory, and God Migration from one place to another place has many causes and many effects. The main reasons for migration are gold, glory, and god. Gold, because people wanted to make money. Glory was in order to get positions in government in the new place. God was to escape religious persecution. Another area of migration was also slaves to go work the land. Many groups migrated to the New World from many different places, for many different reasons, and had many effects on the New World. Two groups of migration are the Pilgrims, and the Quakers. Both groups came to the New World mainly for god, although they were probably motivated by other things. The Pilgrims came to the New World because they wanted to worship freely, something they could not do in England. In England, there was no religious tolerance. Religious tolerance is a country's willingness to understand a religion that is not their own. They felt that the Anglican Church could not be purified, or made better, so they decided to look for another place to practice their religion. They also migrated because they were having economic difficulties. So, in 1620, a group of Pilgrims got on a boat called The Mayflower, sponsored by the Joint Stock Company, a company that sponsored voyages to America in exchange for 4/5 of the gold supposedly found in the colonies, and set sail to the New World. On the ship, the Pilgrims decided to make a pact to create unity, pledge loyalty to the king, establish just and equal law and set ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 68. Mayflower Compact Essay The Mayflower Compact and the first constitution of Pennsylvania were both very important in maintaining peace and order in their respective colonies. Despite the fact that both documents are written by religious men, the difference in the number of religious references sets the two apart. In addition to this, the way they both address the English government is contrasted in both of these official documents. Despite these differences, the underlying theme that the best way to govern the colonies is through a form of self–government, ties both the Compact and the Constitution together. Although similar in many ways, it is their differences between the Compact and the first clause of the Pennsylvanian Constitution that makes them unique. It is not surprising, considering the reasons for the creation of the colonies, that both colonies were created for religious freedom. Therefore, it is safe to assume that the founding fathers of both were religious men. However, the pilgrims that signed the Mayflower Compact were more inclined to mention God in their document compared to those that penned the Constitution of Pennsylvania. In every line, except for the last two, of the compact the word "God" appears. However, in the main clause ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During the time of the pilgrims, the colonies were still under the rule of the English King and as a result, they address the king in terms of utmost reverence, such as "dread Sovereign Lord King James" and "King, Defender of the Faith". On the other hand, the people writing the constitution of Pennsylvania drafted their document during the revolutionary war and consequently regarded the king with no respect. They used phrases such as "the despotic domination of the British Parliament" when referring to the English government. • 70. Differences Between New England And The Chesapeake Colonies New England and the Chesapeake region were both settled largely by people of English origin, but by the 1700's they were two distinct societies. They differed politically, economically, and socially, and these differences stemmed from when people first arrived in the colonies to how the colonies grew over time. The first difference between the New England colonies and the Chesapeake colonies was political. The New England colonies had a more democratic government system; while it was not completely democratic or representative it had a basis of democratic principals. Alternatively, the Chesapeake colonies were largely run by aristocratic leaders rather than the people working together for the common good. Document A explains how the New England colonies had more of a democracy by stating "we must be willing to abridge ourselves... for the supply of others necessities," it also states "we are to be looked at as a city upon a hill." This is relevant to why New England colonies were more democratic because this comes from John Winthrop who was on his way to America to the New England colonies. This more democratic mindset politically from the New England colonies stems back to the Mayflower Compact that was written when the pilgrims were on their way to America, explaining the first difference in these two colonial regions because there were no democratic government documents created for when people were going to the Chesapeake colonies. Through these examples, it is clear that the Mayflower Compact is significant to American history because it provided many ideas of self government that are still used in our governing documents today. The Revolutionary War also has great significance to the United States because without the war, this nation would not be free from British rule. As time went on, more and more colonists under British rule came to North America and formed the 13 colonies. • 76. The Mayflower Compact As A Huge Factor In Today's Society The Mayflower Compact was the first governing document that the people signed in the Americas, and ever since then nothing has been the same. Since November 21, 1620 America has used The Mayflower Compact as a sort of 'template' or 'reference' for some of the later documents such as the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights. The Mayflower Compact established the United States as a literary society, and represents what literature is. The Puritans are the reason why documents are such a huge factor in today's society. The literary critic Perry Miller wrote, "...Because their societies were tightly organized, and above all because they were highly articulate people, the New Englanders established Puritanism – for better or worse– as one of the continuous factors in American life and thought" (The American Puritans ix, 1956). The Puritans were very much so organized and articulate people. When they landed at Cape Cod, they knew they needed to establish something so everyone can be on the same page and to make it legal, so they derived the Mayflower Compact. Doing this solidified their stay because they were governed by text, much like in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is why we feel the need to put everything in writing, if you don't write it, it is not solidified. The passengers came on the mayflower for multiple reasons, such as religious freedoms and civil freedoms. We could also see this theme in a document 150 years later, the Declaration of Independence. The mayflower compact allowed them to be there but it did not free them from British rule. This is why they had to derive another 'compact' or document to free themselves. When the Mayflower finally reached America, the Pilgrims arrived in Plymouth September 11th of the same year and started to build homes. Then the Pilgrims celebrated the first Thanksgiving with the natives. After almost more than seven months the Pilgrims sailed back to England in April of 1621. However, the Mayflower compact was an agreement signed on November 11th of 1620. The Mayflower compact was an agreement like the U.S constitution and declaration independence. I believe the Mayflower compact was very interesting for many reasons because it was signed on board the Mayflower, signed by all the men onboard the Mayflower, allowed the Pilgrims to settle in America, allowed the Pilgrims to get along and the real Mayflower compact doesn't exist.
