Negative Effects Of Smoking And Smoking
Alcohol and tobacco have been around for thousands of years. Around 2,000 years ago tobacco
began to be chewed and smoked during cultural or religious ceremonies and events. Cigarette
making machines were not developed until the latter half of the 1800s. The first alcoholic beverage
to gain popularity was Mead, a fermented drink made from honey and water. Mead was created in
Greece. The Greek warned that it is okay to drink as long as it is not an excessive amount. Although
smoking and drinking have become popular habits for people over the years they can have a
negative impact on the human body.
More than 20 million Americans are living with a disease caused by smoking.
Cigarettes can cause cancer, heart disease, strokes, lung diseases, diabetes, and COPD
(Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease). Smoking increases the risk of problems with the immune
system, including Rheumatoid Arthritis and Tuberculosis. Most people think that cigarettes only
damage your lungs but they affect entire cardiovascular system.
Smoking has a huge impact on your energy levels. Smokers have a lower lung capacity than non–
smokers which means that they get less oxygen in their lungs and that causes them to get less
oxygen to the brain, muscles, and other bodily systems. Hair is also affected by the nicotine that is
found in cigarettes. A study found that it increases hair loss and graying.

The Negative Effects Of Smoking
Nowadays, smoking is one of the most reasons which are killing people in the world. Most of the
smokers are adult. But so many teenagers are smoking too. Some people said that they started to
smoke as the teenager. The effects of smoking are common and dangerous but what most people
don't realize. Smoking is a hard habit to break because tobacco contains nicotine, which is highly
addictive. There are several negative effects of smoking that make people thinking about should
they smoke or not: Health effects, Financial effects, Social effects. The first negative effect is health
effect. Cigarette smoke contains around 4,800 chemicals, 69 of those can cause cancer. The effects
of using tobacco are wide and varied but all of them are dangerous to every user's health. A study
done by the American Lung Association states that smokers die significantly earlier than non–
smokers. Smoking leads to lung cancer, heart disease, strokes, asthma and wide variety of other
diseases. Smokers experience more coughs and colds as compared to non– smokers. Besides
affecting oneself, it also has a negative impact on others around smokers which is also known as
second hand smoking. Also, any pregnant women who are exposed to cigarettes smoke will have an
increased risk of having abnormal baby. Smoking men and women have an average of 14 years of
less life than a person who doesn't use tobacco. Smoking is obviously terrible. These facts plainly
support that simple statement. The second negative effect is financial effect. Smoking can be
expensive, for some, finances may be a motivation to quit. As a smoker, you are also charged higher
rates for health and life insurance policies. Smokers are considered higher risk candidates for these
types of insurance because of the increased risks of serious chronic illnesses, and the increased
medical costs throughout our lifespan. If you need an added incentive to quit, think about how much
of your weekly income is going up in smoke. One packet of 25 cigarettes costs around $27 and the
price keeps rising. After three months of not smoking, you've saved almost $2,500. This is enough
for a new computer or a TV. After six months, you've got over $4,900 to spend. You could take your

Cause And Effect Of Smoking
Smoking, a practice of inhaling and exhaling smoke from burning tobacco, is a problem that is
notorious for causing the death of more than 7 million people every year, and around 890,000 of
those people are non–smokers that were exposed to second–hand smoke (World Health
Organization). According to "Your Health Today: Choices in a Changing Society," smoking causes
cardiovascular disease, lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases because of the content
of approximately 600 chemical ingredients, which yield more than 4,800 substances when burnt
(Teague 336–338). Not only are the smokers themselves harmed, but also non–smokers that are
exposed to smokers' second–hand smoke, especially women, children, pregnant women, and fetus.

At the same time, tobacco was listed in U.S. Pharmacopoeia, the government's official list of drug
(Gene Borio), but it was removed as the tobacco state legislators were bribed. Not until the
dangerous effects of tobacco use become more noticeable did people realize that it was hard to quit
consuming the cancerous substance, and the government made many efforts in an attempt to reduce
tobacco consumption. In 1906, U.S. Justice Department was against the American Tobacco
Company, the second–largest corporation in the United States, by filing charges anti–trust (Gene
Borio). Not giving up, cigarette companies tried to get more loyal customers by sending millions of
free cigarettes to the troops during World War I, getting more soldiers to smoke and be addicted so
when they came home, they will have to buy cigarettes. Despite the increase of more researches that
prove the fact tobacco worsens people's health, cigarette companies still deny it, while promoting
"healthier" choices of tobacco products such as added filter and less toxic ingredients. After
Congress passed the Federal Cigarette Labelling and Advertising Act, surgeon general's health
warnings appear on cigarette packages by 1966 (Gene Borio). Federal Communications
Commission also required one anti–tobacco advertisement for every three tobacco advertisements,

Environmental Effects Of Smoking
Within the past few centuries, environmental tobacco smoke has been an issue. Smoking tobacco
products is the leading, preventable cause of death in the United States. More than ten times of the
deaths from smoking cigarettes have added up to be more deaths than all the wars fought by the
United states (Jones, Page 65, 2016). There are more deaths caused each year from tobacco use than
all deaths of HIV, illegal drug and alcohol use, car accidents, and murders combined (Judd, page
110, 2009). Smoking harms nearly every organ and part of the body, and affects one's overall health.
The effects of smoking endangers nonsmokers, can create financial problems, and finally cause
diseases and cancers.
The first effect of smoking is that it endangers nonsmokers by exposure to secondhand smoke
(ETS). Twyman Abbott claimed that smoking in public was worse than drinking alcohol because it
created toxic fumes (Hirschfelder, page 145, 2010). Out of the 7,000 chemicals found in cigarettes,
250 of them are harmful (Jones, 2016, Page 70). The chemicals found in the cigarettes can affect the
smoker themselves, and the people in the area around them. When someone smokes, they are
putting other people's health in risk other than just themselves. This creating the issue of secondhand
smoke. Some people can handle being in the smoke without being bothered and then others can't
stand it. But for the people who already have health problems like asthma, or even allergies,

. One thing that people over 60 can do to make aging a healthier process is to avoid smoking.
Smoking on average, decreases a person's life span by 14 years. Smoking is a leading cause of lung
cancer (Aldwin & Gilmer, 2013). It is never to late for someone to stop smoking. With smoking
cessation, the results are immediate. Those who quit smoking generally experience improvements in
breathing and control of high blood pressure. Cessation of smoking brings a rapid reduction in risk
of stroke and myocardial infarction and a slower reduction in the risk of cancer (Boston University
School of Public Health, 2013). Good cholesterol is lowered in individuals who smoke and chances
of atherosclerosis increases in the body due to an increase in blood fibrinogen and viscosity levels,
which can lead to blood clots (Aldwin & Gilmer, 2013).
2. As people age, the individual's energy or caloric needs are less. However, the protein, vitamins
and minerals requirements remain constant. Healthy older adults should increase the amount of
protein the diet to maintain muscle mass, especially if the person is sick. Overweight individuals
should consider lowering fat intake. Also, nutritional intakes should incorporate ample amounts of
calcium and vitamins (Aldwin & Gilmer, 2013). The aging person should also consume fiber–rich
foods such as whole grains, fruit, and vegetables which will make them feel more energetic and give
you fuel to keep going (Saisan, Segal, & White, 2017). "Exercise, a

Causes And Effects Of Smoking
As your bad habits changes so will your entire life... QUIT SMOKING
Tobacco smoking is responsible for the deaths of approximately five million people each year,
according to the World Health Organization, it is dangerous to your health, Regardless of the way
you smoke it.
Cigarettes contain about 600 ingredients, when they burn, they generate more than 7,000 chemicals.
Many of those chemicals are poisonous and don't just affect your lungs, they can affect your entire
body.
Stopping smoking is difficult for two reasons:
1. Nicotine is Addictive
Nicotine stimulates pleasure centers in the brain and when it is discontinued, the smoker will
experience physical withdrawal symptoms, such as Headache, Sleep problems, Irritability,
Difficulty concentrating and chest tightness which make the person start smoking again to stop these
symptoms.
2. Rewarding Psychological Aspects of Smoking Smoking behavior becomes automatically linked
with daily activities it is extremely habit–forming, you may not even realize when and why you
smoke.
How can smoke damage your body?
Smoking can cause fatal damage to your body's organs and systems:
Effects of smoking on your Central nervous system: Smoking tobacco has powerful effects on your
central nervous system, When Nicotine reaches your brain it makes you feel more energized for a
while, but actually it also can impair your cognitive functioning and make you feel irritated and
depressed and increases your risk of having a stroke by at least 50%
Effects of smoking on your Respiratory system: Smoking can cause fatal damage to your lungs. It
starts with Coughs, colds, wheezing and asthma but it ends with fatal diseases such as pneumonia,
emphysema and lung cancer.
Effects of smoking on your cardiovascular system: Carbon monoxide from the smoke and nicotine
both puts a strain on the heart by making it work faster causes blood vessels to tighten.
Damages your heart and your blood circulation increases the risk of conditions such as coronary
heart disease, cardiac arrest, and stroke.
In fact, smoking increases your risk of having a heart attack and Sudden Cardiac Arrest.

The Effects Of Smoking On The Uk
As more of us become aware of the dangers of smoking, the percentage of smokers in the UK has
fallen from around 50 per cent of the population in the 1950s to 25 per cent in 2003.
Even with this fall in the number of smokers, it 's estimated that cigarettes were responsible for
more than 1.2 million deaths in 2000 in the European region of the World Health Organisation. In
the UK, smoking is responsible for around one in five deaths.
The illnesses caused by smoking extend beyond the well–reported links with cancer, heart disease
and respiratory illnesses. Smoking can cause impotence, ulcers and fertility problems and it 's doesn
't just harm smokers.

A Scottish study of teenage girls found that smoking was part of an image cultivated by the girls
who were seen as leaders of their groups. Smoking went along with wearing short skirts, jewellery
and make–up.
In contrast, a study by the World Health Organisation found that the 11 to 15 year olds who were
most likely to be smokers were lonely, had difficulty talking to parents, had problems at school and
had started drinking alcohol.
How we learn to smoke
Health psychology looks at the complex array of biological, social and psychological factors that
influence our health and illness–related behaviour.
Smoking is a biological addiction, with nicotine as addictive as cocaine and heroin. However, there
is more to being hooked on cigarettes than the physical addiction to nicotine. When people want to
quit, they also have a psychological habit to break.
Social learning theory describes how we learn by example from others. We are strongly influenced
by our parents, and other people we look up to, such as peers, actors and pop stars. This can lead us
to emulate their behaviour and try smoking.
There is an almost immediate effect on our brains with those first cigarettes, so we keep smoking to
get this reward.
Later we learn to associate smoking with other activities such as drinking coffee, going to the pub,
etc.
We can become conditioned so just the thought of the activity triggers the need for a cigarette,

Smoking is known to be a primary cause of harmful effects on health, family, environment and
society. However, scientist research in health and environment, that researches show that smoking
cause many diseases, even lung cancer. An aim of my study has been to determine that smoking also

health but also effect on family, society.

In particular, "the reduced brain size that we saw in smokers' babies could lead to impaired
cognitive ability of the child" (Smoking during pregnancy, 2003). A study by Drews, Murphy,
Yeargin, Allsopp and Decoufle (1996) looked at mental retardation in children of mothers who
smoked during pregnancy and concluded that smoking during pregnancy increases by 50 percent the
likelihood that a child will have mental retardation. Maternal smoking during pregnancy is also a
recognized risk factor for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Teenage smoking has remained to
be a serious problem ever since the 1970s. Until now, cigarettes are still recognized as the most
dangerous substance being used by a great number of high school students on a daily basis. The
impact of nicotine, the powerful drug contained in cigarettes, make for people addict and difficult to
quit it. Therefore, adults should smoke as least as possible in front of teenagers because they are at
an age when the curiosity level is the highest, and the desire to try something new can affect his/her
life.
Harmful effects of smoking on environment and society No one can deny the harm of smoking to
the human body. The medical evidence for this is well established and overwhelming. Because of
this, the law in the United States and many other countries requires including a warning on any
smoking advertisement. Many millions of Americans, both children and adults, are still exposed to

Harmful Effects of Smoking
Smoking has become very common and fashionable, especially among young boys. This habit
usually begins at school when boys try to experiment with every new thing that they can lay their
hands on.
Despite the warnings given by doctors about the ill–effects of smoking, people continue to smoke.
Smokers are addicted to it, and even if they want to, they cannot refrain from picking up a cigar or
cigarette and puffing away. Some youngsters smoke for the sake of society and some feel that would
make them appear liberated and broadminded.
In the beginning, a teenager may take a few puffs from his friend's cigarette; then comes a time
when it becomes an indispensable part of his life. Several puffs lead to the formation of a habit.

Lung Cancer). The reason why people get addicted to any type of tobacco product is because all
tobacco products have nicotine in them
Tobacco companies are doing very well all over the world. Every packet of cigars or cigarettes has a
warning inscribed in it: cigarette smoking is injurious to health." Yet the smoker never reads this
warning and even if he reads it he never pays heed to it.
The government raises the price of tobacco every year. This is usually done to discourage people
from smoking. Yet smokers continue to be slaves of this habit and often spend a substantial part of
their earnings on cigarettes. Cigarette advertisements lure people into smoking and most active
smokers cause a great deal of harm to passive smokers as well. Smokers force the members of their
family to bear the ill effects of the smoke that they exhale. Smoking can be stopped by a strong will
power and every person has the capacity to give it up once he sets his mind at doing so.
The harmful effects of smoking are:
Lung Cancer
Smoking accounts for about 80–90% of all chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, emphysema,
chronic mucus secretion, and chronic air flow blocks. Smoking is involved in 85% of all lung cancer
deaths. An individual with chronic bronchitis, which is caused by smoking, is more likely to get a

The Effects Of Smoking On The Baby
In the world today, it is becoming more socially acceptable to smoke while pregnant. It has gone as
far as some doctors telling their patients to continue to smoke while pregnant. Do mothers that
decide to continue to smoke while pregnant really know all the negative short and long term effects
it has on their baby? The fact that this is becoming more accepted in today's world to smoke while
pregnant is completely unacceptable. The list of negative effects that smoking while pregnant have
on the baby range from premature labor to brain defects. Clinical studies have proven the negative
short and long term effects that smoking while pregnant can have on a baby. Smoking while
pregnant should be illegal, due to the amount of negative effects it has on the baby. One of the most
common effects of smoking while pregnant is premature labor. A premature birth is any birth before

15% of babies born premature die within the first month. In the article "Associations between

Smoking Effects in America
The one substance found in tobacco, which is in cigarettes, is nicotine, a highly addictive drug. The
drug rearranges the chemicals in the brain, dopamine and noradrenaline, causing a change in mood
and concentration, giving off a feeling of relaxation. The drug elevates the mood and heart rate but
doesn't last for very long. Once the nicotine leaves the body, the addiction begins and a craving for
another cigarette begins. Without replenishing the nicotine in the body, the body endures unpleasant
withdrawal symptoms. The more someone smokes, the more the brain gets used to the drug, so a
higher nicotine intake would be needed to get the same effect on a person who has been smoking all
their life. With an addiction so strong, the surgeon general's study shows that nicotine has the same
addiction, possibly even more, and behavior characteristics than heroin. Forums have been made
requesting help on relationship that have problems because of the use of tobacco smoke. Replies
showed two sides of people: those who are for and those who are opposed cigarette smoking. Those
who are for the use are usually smokers themselves. Explaining the addiction of the drug is a
smoker's reason as to why they partake in the drug although they know how life threatening it can
be. Those who are opposed the use of tobacco are typically nonsmokers who explain the dangers in
health and well–being of smokers. Tobacco companies influence public policy and legislation in
America every day.

The Effects Of Tobacco Smoking
Although free of nicotine, marijuana smoke certainly pollutes the lungs. And since tobacco smoking
has been linked to respiratory injury, cancer, emphysema, heart disease, complications of pregnancy,
low birth weight, and other ills, it makes sense to worry whether smoking marijuana might prove
equally harmful (Mack and Joy). Marijuana joints have been shown to deliver at least four times as
much tar to the lungs as tobacco cigarettes of equivalent weight. This difference is due to the lack of
filters on joints and because marijuana smokers typically inhale a larger volume of smoke and take
it more deeply into the lungs than tobacco smokers do. Marijuana smokers also tend to hold smoke
in for a time before exhaling, exposing the lungs to even greater levels of cancer–causing agents.
Clinical studies suggest that people who smoke marijuana are more likely to develop respiratory
illnesses than are nonsmokers. A survey of outpatient medical visits at a large health maintenance
organization (HMO) found that marijuana users were more likely to seek help for respiratory
illnesses than people who smoked tobacco (Mack and Joy). While cannabis is harmful to the brain
and lungs of the user, it is also harmful to the ones around the user. It has been shown that the
effects of using cannabis are similar to those of alcohol and benzodiazepines and include slowing of
reaction time, motor incoordination, specific defects in short–term memory, difficulty in
concentration and particular

Well, now it is time to go to school. I have first period with that poor and worthless guy, John. My
boring social studies teacher was going on this long rant about James city. In the middle of his

shocked, and scared out of my mind! Then the door opened slowly. We saw these scary guys in
masks that had big guns, and I mean huge guns. "Everybody put your hands up," yelled one robber!
Everyone started running. It was chaos. Somehow, John and I got trapped together in the same
corner. The robbers cornered us. There was a loud crack, John got shot in the arm and knocked
unconscious due to shock. His head hit the wall, and this odd blue keypad popped out. It said in a
computerized voice, "please enter the code to access the portal." I thought, what just happened? I
decided that I would type in a random code (7–4–4–8) into the keypad. I guess I got lucky because

Effects Of Cigarette Smoking
Cigarette smoking is one of the strong sources of killer diseases in the Philippines and other
countries worldwide. Young and adult men and women are engaged in smoking due to cases such as
peer pressure, poor religious beliefs, stress, etc. As the trend ascends, harmful effects on one's health
rises directly. In order to lessen the motivation of smoking, countries implement laws. One of the
ways to inform and to make Filipinos hesitate, if not, quit smoking is through the graphic health
warnings (GHWs) included in the cigarette packaging. Cigarettes are considered deadly and very
addictive. With no warnings associated for its usage, rise of death from smoking–related diseases
will continue going up. Not only the smokers are at risk, but people exposed to second – hand
smoke are susceptible to negative effects of tobacco consumption. It can be considered as passive
smoking, increasing the possibility of having cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, and harm in
children's health as its harmful effects. In order to discourage consumers and inform people of its
negative effects, the government provides regulations to tobacco products. It is a struggle for the
government of a country to make sure it has healthy citizens and environment. Providing programs
to control people's involvement to cigarettes is a must. Through these applications, it can promote
wellness to people affected as such may interrupt the appeal and ease of access to such products.

Harmful Effects Of Smoking
Smoking isn't good for one's body. Especially if you've been smoking a pack a day, and for a long
period of time. But what is the full extent of the effects of smoking on your body?
The effects of smoking varies from person to person as it will depend on the person's vulnerability
to the chemical in cigarette or tobacco smoke. It will also depend on the number of cigarette sticks a
person smokes per day, the age when the person first started to smoke, and the number of years the
person has been smoking.
According to recent studies, every year hundreds of thousands of people all over the globe die from
medical complications caused by smoking. Aside from the stench it leaves on one's clothes, breath,
and hair, it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Smoking is one of the biggest single causes of preventable disease and premature death in a large
number of mainly developed countries around the world. In the UK around 120,000 people die each
year from smoking–related diseases. 50% of long–term smokers die prematurely from smoking, a
large number of them when they reach middle age.
Globally around 2.5 million people die each year from smoking and it has been estimated that some
time during the 2020's the number of deaths caused by smoking will hit the 10 million mark.
The majority of people who die from smoking will have suffered from one of three main diseases:
lung cancer, coronary heart disease or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Around 90% of all lung cancer deaths are caused from smoking and smoking is also the biggest risk
factor for a number of other types of cancer as well. Overall, smoking has been linked to a third of
all deaths from cancer. In the US, 1 in every 4 people die of cancer and over half a million people
die each year from this disease. To give you a clearer idea, more than 1,500 people a day die from
cancer.
People who smoke a lot of cigarettes a day are particularly at risk of developing cancer and if those
people have been smoking for a long time, the risk is even higher. For example, a person who has
been smoking one packet of cigarettes a day for 30 years is more at risk than a person who has been

The Negative Effects of Smoking
One of the hardest things in life is saying goodbye to the ones you love for the very last time.
Smoking is a life–threatening addiction that has brought this tragedy to millions of families at an
accelerated pace and not all have been those who do smoke. No one wants to have to deal with
tragedy, but nowadays there may be no way to avoid it. Unless, that is, our government intervenes,
and puts something into place to end the threat of Secondhand Smoke exposure. I believe the one
thing that can be done to avoid this exposure, leading to the unwanted tragedy, is a nationwide
public smoking ban. Everyone says that Smoking or not is your choice. While that is true, the
effects that come of it are not. When a person smokes everyone around them is exposed. Smokers
may be okay with taking a chance of dying over it, but are others willing to allow their Husband,
wife, son, Daughter, or other family members to die over it as well?
Smoking poses threats to others, especially smoking in a public place. According to MedlinePlus, a
service of the U.S. National Library of Medicine, if each state puts a smoking ban in public places,
they estimate that there would be 18,000 fewer heart attacks in one year in the United States. People
who smoke potentially know their fate. Why is it we as the public should let those smokers can give
the same fate to those who do not smoke? Smokers answer to this is, "Okay, it is dangerous, but I
don't want to have to walk a mile to smoke a cigarette", but

Effects Of Smoking In Restaurants
Smoking in restaurants
"One thousand Americans stop smoking everyday – by dying" said by anonymous. If smoking is
killing people every day, why would we want someone to poison ourselves with deadly air? When
we are in a restaurant and someone is smoking we are breathing the same air that they are. Even
though their lips are on the cancer stick the same toxins they are breathing in is being released in the
air around them. Without proper ventilation (open fresh air), the people around the light cigarette
would be breathing in those same toxins and poisons, which is second hand smoking. Smoking in a
restaurant is not only harmful to the one smoking but to those around them. Smoking can cause loss
of appetite, senses, side effects from second smoking and most of all the rights of a nonsmoker to
not be presented to the smoke. When going into a restaurant, a person wants to enjoy their meal and
time. Especially if they are going and spending money on the luxury. But did you know that
smoking can cause loss of appetite and loss of senses? When someone is smoking they ingest toxins
such as tar and carbine monoxide, which causes the loss of appetite and senses? So, if someone is
going to a restaurant they want to digest the food and drinks that they plan to order not toxins that
causes loss of appetite and senses. In the book "Truth About Smoking", it concludes about the harms
of smoking and the harm that smoking has on the mouth. Smoking causes gum disease, staining and
loss of teeth as well as bad breath. "When tar, the solid particles in tobacco smoke that collect in the
lungs, mixes with saliva in the mouth, it coats the teeth. Teeth take on a brownish color, and flat
surfaces where the tar can accumulate can even become black, are all results of smoke staining
teeth. Which can also cause wear on the biting surface of the teeth which leads to teeth decay. With
gum disease the gums recede, they expose the roots of the teeth. The bacteria in the gum pockets
don't just attack the tissue of the gums, they weaken the bone and the connective tissue that holds
the teeth in place. The residue of cigarette smoke remains on the breath, including the tar particles
that stain the teeth. What happens is Saliva washes

health, nonetheless people continue to smoke. To be honest, that is fine. If people want to endanger
themselves by smoking then I wish them a swift and peaceful end (though most smokers die a slow
and agonizing death). What is not acceptable is the effect that smoke has on non–smokers who have
almost no way of getting away from smoke unless they want to stay in their house. Smokers affect
everyone around them for the worse. Smoking should be restricted or banned from all public places
because the health of non–smokers should not be jeopardized by secondhand smoke. As stated
before, almost everyone knows and accepts the fact that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An additional 35,000 die of heart disease also from secondhand smoke..." It is unfair to make those
who choose not to smoke be damaged by the secondhand smoke of a smoker. What is the solution to
this problem? The most effective solution is to ban smoking in all public places. If people who want
to smoke then they can do so in the privacy of their own homes, where they can only hurt
themselves and their loved ones. California has taken the first step by banning smoking in most
indoor establishments. Yet more has to be done. It needs to be banned outdoors in public as well.
Though the theory that outdoors smoke dissipates has some validity, if you are within 20 feet of a
smoker, you are still affected. Other atmospheric conditions can cause you to be affected from
farther away. There will be arguments against this solution, the main one being personal freedom.
Opponents will say that their personal freedom to smoke is being violated. Though right now,
smokers are violating millions of people's rights. A non–smoker's right to live in an uncontaminated
and healthy environment is being violated by the smoker who chooses to engage in this repulsive
habit. A non–smoker's right to a longer, pain free life is being taken away by the diseases they get
from inhaling secondhand smoke.

Negative Effects Of Smoking
Introduction
Smoking causes 1,300 deaths daily in the U.S., and an estimated 5.6 million pre–mature deaths is
expected among American youths18 years and younger due to a smoking–related illness if smoking
continues at the current rate (CDC, 2017). According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), there
are currently 40 million adult smokers in the U.S. (CDC, 2017), and 763,960 of these residents are
from Massachusetts (DPH, 2014).
Smoking can cause various kinds of cancer such as those of the cervix, stomach, esophagus, lungs
and the bladder (Cio et al., 2014). Besides, smoking predisposes individuals to Chronic Obstructive
Pulmonary Disease (COPD) which involves health complications in the bronchi resulting in various
diseases such as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to West, McNeill & Raw (2000), 1–3 smokers from 100 who receive brief advice from
their health care provider, make some form of attempt to quit, as this form of advice can trigger a
cessation attempt. Patients tend to lose interest and revert to their bad habit. A pilot study, completed
at the Mason Square Clinic in Springfield between July and August of 2017 was successful as it
utilized the use of group sessions, contingency management and the use of a carbon monoxide
breathalyzer, but had margin for error due to the use of large rewards instead of smaller amounts (J.
Alexander, personal communication, November 1, 2017). On a national level, exposure to
secondhand smoke or smoking cigarettes leads to premature death of almost 500,000 Americans
yearly (CDC, 2017), and smokers die 10 years earlier than non–smokers. An estimated 40% to 70%
of people with HIV smoke, a number almost triple in comparison to that of those with other chronic
illnesses such as Diabetes, Cancer, Chronic Obstructive pulmonary disease and Cardio–
cerebrovascular disease (Nguyen, et al., 2015). In HIV–positive patients, a negative virologic and
immune response (O'Cleirigh, Traeger, Mayer, Magidson & Safren, 2013), and an increase in
medical complications have been linked to smoking (Humfleet, Hall, Delucchi, Dilley, 2013). Yet,

The Negative Effects of Smoking
Many people smoke in the United States and in every hour fifty one people die due to smoking
which is about one person every minute. Even though smoking is bad it helps the government and
the people. Smoking doesn't kill a person it does more than that. It changes your appearance, health,
and affects the people around you. Many people should understand that smoking is not good for
their health. One should consider the consequences of smoking. Every time a person smokes they
are just pulling the trigger to kill themselves. Smoking cigarettes is very injurious to one's health. It
has many negative effects on a person's life. Cigarettes have a lot of chemicals in which half of them
cause cancer. Also, smoking harms every part of the body and is the main cause of lung cancer.
Smoking affects many parts of the body like the immune system, bones, heart, blood vessels, vision,
breathing, and the lungs. For example the immune system is the body's way of protecting itself from
diseases and infections which means by smoking it makes one have respiratory infections. It causes
a smoker to have diabetes and therefore a person has a higher rate of having type 2 diabetes.
One of the other factors which contribute to smoking is that it affects the bones. It weakens the
bones and most likely causes them to fracture. Other ways in which smoking affects the heart and
blood vessels is the bulging blood vessels that can burst and cause death. Also, one could have high

Smoking via a cigarette is a preventable habit that people develop when they become stressed, feel
the need for social acceptance or wanting a satisfaction release of hormones. Cigarettes contain
nicotine; a highly addictive group of chemicals that when inhaled spread through the body via the
lymphatic system. Smoking has both internal and external repercussions including a depletion in
oxygen levels and gangrene respectively. Smoking has been directly related to many types of
cancers and ailments including cardiovascular disease (CVD). CVD relates to damage of the heart
including heart failure, stroke and the build–up of plaque in the arteries.
Approximately one in five people currently living in remote and rural areas suffer from CVD
(World Heart Foundation, 2012). A remote and rural area is classified as an area outside of the
metropolitan region. Generally, populations in such areas consist of between 5 000 and 100 000
people. (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, 2016). 29 percent of Australians currently live in
regional areas and 2.2 percent live in remote areas (Tobacco in Australia, 2016). Due to the large
distance from medical facilitates, those living in rural and remote areas have limited access to health
care. As a result, they are more likely to smoke, become over weight, drink alcohol in excessive
amounts and be physical inactive (Tobacco in Australia, 2016).

Effects Of Cigarette Smoking
Cigarette smoking is a serious global health problem and continues to be a major health hazard. It is
a significant contributor to cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Tobacco smoking is one of the
largest preventable causes of premature deaths globally1. In 2010, an estimated 120 million Indian
adults were smokers, making India second only to China in terms of number of smokers2,3.
In 2010, about 1 million deaths occurred from smoking, or 10% of all deaths in India, of which
about 70% of deaths occurred between the ages of 30 and 69 years4,5 Even low–tar cigarettes and
smokeless tobacco have been shown to increase the risk of cardiovascular events in comparison to
nonsmokers34,35. Furthermore, passive smoking (environmental tobacco exposure) with a smoke
exposure of about one–hundredth that of active cigarette smoking is associated with approximately
a 30% increase in the risk of CAD, as compared to an 80% increase in active smokers36,37
Cigarette smoking plays a key role in all the phases of atherosclerosis from endothelial dysfunction
to acute clinical events, the latter being largely thrombotic. Both active and passive (environmental)
cigarette smoking predisposes to cardiovascular events. Whether or not there is a distinct direct
dose–dependent correlation between cigarette smoking and cardiovascular disease is debatable, as
some recent experimental clinical studies have shown a non–linear relation between them. The exact

Cause And Effect Of Smoking
When most people think about the negative effects caused by smoking, they usually associate it with
breathing problems and lung cancer. It has been proven that smoking is also a major cause of heart
disease for men and women. The Surgeon General's Warning states "Smoking causes lung cancer,
heart disease, emphysema, and may complicate pregnancy." It has also been labeled as the leading
preventable cause of disease and death in the United States. With around 20 percent of deaths
related to heart disease being caused from smoking, it is important to look at how smoking causes
heart disease, what types of heart disease arise from smoking and the possibility of reversing the
damage after smoking cessation. The term heart disease is often also referred to as cardiovascular
disease. Cardiovascular disease is the narrowing or blockage of blood vessels that can lead to a heart
attack, chest pain or stroke. There is a drug in cigarettes known as nicotine which causes increased
blood pressure and heart rate. This is turn, results in your heart requiring more oxygen to keep
pumping. Some of the most common types of heart disease associated with smoking are coronary
artery disease, peripheral artery disease, and strokes are also a major risk factor. It is possible to
prevent or treat these forms of heart disease with the decision to practice a healthy lifestyle.

The Psychological Effects Of Smoking
One thing that smoking affects that a lot of people do not think about is how it affects the people
around the smoker, not only in a physical way but emotionally also. According to a study, kids
whose parents smoke are three times more likely to smoke when they get older. If smokers have
kids, smoking around them increases their risk of having ear infections, asthma and other breathing
problems that include coughs, shortness of breath, and even bronchitis. It's not just children that are
at risk of lung and heart problems, it's every person around a smoker that are put at risk due to
secondhand smoke. Secondhand smoke contains over 7,000 chemicals. Hundreds of them being
toxic and 70 have shown to cause cancer in humans. Breathing in secondhand smoke has been
shown to have instant effects on the cardiovascular system of nearby individuals, whether it's from a
neighbor's burning cigarette or from a cigarette outside your window. Over time, it takes a toll on
people's lungs and has been found to increase the risk of having a stroke by 20–30%
(Quitterscircle). Smoking also has an impact on pets and animals. Exposure to secondhand smoke
for dogs increases the risk of them getting lung cancer and nasal cancer, especially long nosed dogs
like greyhounds. Cats that are exposed to secondhand smoke are more than three times as likely to
non–Hodgkin's lymphoma. They may also suffer from asthma or lung cancer. Secondhand smoke

Now we know the most lifesaving way to prevent this is to quit smoking, but did you know people
who are exposed to second hand smoking can also get lung cancer, even though a person quit
smoking it may have impacted, the cigarette smoke, into someone else's body. Cigarette smoke is
full of cancer–causing material, called carcinogens, this changes the lung tissue right away.
Fundamentally, the human body may be able to restore the damage. With each repeated
vulnerability, normal cells that line the person's lungs are progressively harmed.4 In time the
impairment brings about cells to act irregular, then cancer may develop.4
Now there are two types of lung cancer, non–small cell lung cancer and small cell lung cancer.
Small cell lung cancer takes place solely in heavy smokers. If you have headaches, bone pain, and
you lose weight without trying, wheezing, chest pain, shortness of breath, a chronic cough or
"smoker's cough" we talked about before, these are some symptoms that you may have lung cancer.
If you haven't been able to quit smoking, then its recommended to make an appointment with a
doctor so they can help you. Some of the strategies are counseling, medications, and nicotine
replacements.
Lung cancer can spread to other parts of the body, like the brain and bones.4 When it spreads it
causes pain, nausea, headaches. Once it spreads it really can't be curable. There are treatments to
help a person them live longer, but that is why smoking is so bad. And the pain can

As a matter of fact smoking hurts every part of your body. It is responsible for 87% of lung cancer.
Smoking is also responsible for many other cancers. Smoking will also cause heart disease.

to be weak and easy to break. Smoking can cause vision loss as well (Be Tobacco Free). Bones are
weakened and become brittle due to smoking. This is dangerous as it leads to osteoporosis and
broken bones. Plaque builds up in the blood due to smoking. This creates atherosclerosis, which is
the narrowing of the arteries, increasing the risk of clotting due to reduced blood flow. Carbon
monoxide in nicotine make the heart work harder and faster. (Seymour) Stroke risk increases 2 to 4
times; strokes can cause brain damage and death due to the lack of oxygen to the brain; aneurysms
occur when the walls of the blood vessel weakness forming a bulge, and when it bursts, a
subarachnoid hemorrhage occurs. The most common risks associated with the heart and smoking
are coronary heart disease, heart attack and heart–related chest pains. (Seymour) Smoking is also a

The Poisoning Effects of Smoking
Smoking tobacco has been practiced for years. People worldwide view smoking as a lifestyle and
smoked for pleasure and relaxation. During the 19th century it was considered fashionable to be
seen taking a puff from a cigarette. At that time, the world was blind to the negative effects of
smoking tobacco. However, during the 20th century, scientific research began and The American
Cancer Society began to emphasize the health risks of smoking cigarettes. By 1964 a Surgeon's
General warning was seen on every pack of cigarettes across the U.S. linking smoking to lung
cancer. Even with the astounding evidence of the health effects, cigarette smoking continues to
claim the lives of thousands of Americans each year. Cigarette smoking causes permanent damage
for not only the smoker, but the non smoker and environment as well. If the U.S. government were
to ban cigarette smoking all together, there will be a positive change in the well–being of Americans
everywhere.
The counterargument against the prohibition of cigarette smoking is that cigarette

The Effects Of Smoking On The Decline Of Smoking Rates
Introduction Despite the fact that Australia has made significant advances in the decline of smoking
rates within the population, with rates falling dramatically since the 1960s to approximately 14% of
the population classed as smokers, smoking continues to be a leading cause of preventable illness
and deaths in Australia. Worryingly, smoking is attributed to more hospital admissions and deaths
than alcohol and illicit drug consumption combined. Unfortunately, smoking claims a staggering
15,500 Australians every year. Internationally, the WHO states that 5.4 million people died as a
result of smoking in 2008; a figure that is set to rise to 8 million per year by 2030. Smoking is a

Primary prevention endeavours to promote the idea of healthy living and the reduction of risk
factors in order to facilitate this. Smoking cessation programs and anti smoking education is an
example of primary prevention in action. Considering that smoking is a modifiable risk factor for
cardiovascular disease, it can be concluded that the primary prevention of smoking would aid in the
reduction or elimination of risk associated with tobacco consumption. It should also be noted that
premature cardiovascular disease is highly preventable therefore primary prevention is highly
desirable. Cardiovascular risk factors can be placed into two groups. There are non–modifiable risk
factors such as age, gender, and family history. These factors are considered to be non–modifiable as
there is nothing that can be done to change them. The second group consists of modifiable risk
factors which can be further divided into biomedical, behavioural, and psychosocial risk factors.
Biomedical risk factors include: hypertension, dislipidaemia, being overweight or obese, diabetes,
and renal disease. Behavioural risk factors include: smoking, sedentary lifestyle, poor nutrition, and
excessive alcohol consumption. And finally, psychosocial risk factors include: depression, anxiety,
social isolation, and stress. Smoking and Cardiovascular Disease In 2007, 46,623*update this

Introduction
Tobacco smoking is the major preventable cause of illness and mortality in developed countries.
Tobacco smoke is a combination of approximately 4,000 toxic chemicals and at least 42
components are associated with cancer. Tobacco Smoking is responsible for 30% of cancer deaths
and 90% of deaths from lung cancer (Arnold, 2001). The other cancers related to cigarette use are
mouth cancer, larynx, pharynx, esophagus, pancreas, kidney, bladder and cervix. The smoke is
associated with an increased risk of a variety of cancers. Of almost 5000 tobacco components,
proved to be more than 50 carcinogens. It is estimated that 30% of all cancers in industrialized ...

Male infertility is the inability to achieve a pregnancy after one year of frequent sex without using
contraception. Research has produced important new data to help men–smokers who want to be
parents. By abandoning the habit of tobacco smoking, they can start reproduction.
Physical Effects on life
Tobacco smoking impairs the oxygenation of the lungs, i.e., there is a decreased amount of air
absorbed by the lungs and, as a consequence, reducing the blood's ability to carry oxygen to cells
and muscles of the body. This fact leads to loss of physical ability to perform life activities like
playing sports and dancing.
In all, over time the lungs of the smoker lose elasticity and space for the exchange of carbon dioxide
for oxygen. This results in a reduced respiratory capacity because there is less air in and out, which
also affect the practice of sports.
Nicotine increases the heart rate, which means that the heart of the smoker is forced to "work" more
to have the same performance as the heart of a nonsmoker.
So while smokers practice exercises: they tire more easily; have less endurance and less breathless
than people who do not smoke.
Psychological effects on life
One of the common justifications of tobacco smokers to maintain the habit is that smoking relieves
stress. And it seems they are right. Those who had received nicotine patches were less likely to
retaliate against provocations virtual enemy(Swan, 2007).

anxiety and tension much stronger. Smokers feel anxious and when they haven't smoked for a while.
These bad feelings they get are temporary because the minute they stop smoking everything comes

Smoking and the Effects of It
Smoking is known as one of the worst habits to break. Most people who start never quit just because
it is just too hard to quit or they are just so addicted to the chemicals that the tobacco companies use
in their cigarettes and don't see the real problems that smoking can cause. If smoking did the same
thing as it did on the outside as it does on the inside, how many people do you think will smoke
then?
Everyday, about 3,000 teenagers smoke their first cigarette. About half of those teenagers become
addicted and then regular smokers before the age of eighteen. About one third of these teenagers
will die of lung cancer, heart disease, leukemia, or some other smoke related problems or diseases.

fair to the many non–smokers everywhere? They try to separate the smokers from the non–smokers
by two different sections in restaurants and other public places, but the truth is that they all know it
doesn't work.
If you stop smoking your health will increase drastically and you will notice some big changes like:
 20 minutes after you quit: blood pressure falls and pulse rate return to normal
 48 hours: taste and smell is enhanced
 2 weeks to 3 months: blood circulation improves and lung functions increase up to thirty
percent
 1–9 months: lung functions continue to improve
 1 year: excessive risk of heart disease is half that of a regular smoker
 5 years: rate of lung cancer death drops by almost half. Risk of stroke is also reduced to
that of a non–smoker five to fifteen years after quitting. The risk of cancer of the month and throat is
cut in half.

Cigarette smokers not only hurting themselves when they smoke, but also others around them.
Smoking can cause many horrible things to the body that most people are not aware of. Everyone
knows smoking can cause cancer, heart disease, that it can shorten your life by 10 years or more,
and that the habit can cost a smoker thousands of dollars a year. So, why do people still smoke? The
answer is "addiction". Smoking is a hard habit to part because tobacco contains nicotine, which is
highly addictive. There are several long term after effects and causes of smoking; firstly, teenagers
mostly smoke because they want to fit in. Teens see their friends smoke and they think it makes
them look cool or independent. Secondly It reduces tension and it is also believed that it can have a
calming effect on people who are anxious and worried. Although, people smoke when they are
depressed, lonely or bored and it helps them to reduce the stress.
Social Effects Of Smoking

The social effects are the last consequences. Non–Smokers usually don't usually socialize well with

far as some doctors telling their patients to continue to smoke while pregnant.
One of the most common effects of smoking while pregnant is premature labor. A premature birth is
any birth before 37 weeks of pregnancy. Premature labor is one of the leading causes of neonatal
deaths. Around 15% of babies born premature die within the first month. In the article Associations

This is their body's way of responding to the effects of nicotine. When you add to this the carbon
monoxide that enters the blood stream with cigarette smoke, it takes the place of vital oxygen that is
needed by the muscles and organs (U.S. DHHS "The Health"). This means that the body is not able
to perform to the best of its capacity.
Chemicals in tobacco smoke harm the airways and lungs, damaging the lung's ability to clean
themselves, and making the smoker more open to coughs and chest infection (U.S. DHHS "The

become adults, many young smokers will already have abnormal changes in the cells lining their
small airways (Center for Disease Control, Pg. 16). Teenage smokers also have more asthma and
allergic symptoms than non–smokers of the same age, and get more easily winded when exercising
(Center for Disease Control, Pg. 16). As you can now see, smoking effects many parts of the body.
Just one cigarette dose make a difference, and even young smokers show signs of damage due to

smoking is good for social connection, it's could help a stranger to get closer to each other when
people met for the first time, they often ask each other do you smoke,if the answer is yes, people
will give them cigarettes to smoke. It shows kindness and helps to develop a friendship. The fact that

The Negative Effects Of Smoking
Smoking not only hurts its users, but it hurts whole communities and the economy. Researchers
believe that smoking began around 1 BCE, with recreational use becoming a common thing as soon
as European settlers reached the Americas in the 15th century (Borio). Throughout the past
centuries, tobacco has been used in many different ways. As more methods of utilizing tobacco have
become possibilities, their negative effects on their users and other people have increased. In order
to make the tobacco more pleasurable for the user, newer, more harmful chemicals become
ingredients in products such as cigars, chewable tobacco, and worst–of–all, cigarettes. These
dangerous filler chemicals not only make tobacco products extremely addictive, ... Show more

This cost is only the cost of the cigarettes alone. Cigarettes and other tobacco products cause
numerous health problems, and the health expenses are the real reason cigarettes cost the user.
Based on research done at Duke University, it was estimated that "the combined price paid by their
families and society is about $40 per pack of cigarettes," around 33 of which are paid by the user
("Cigarettes Cost a Total of $40 a Pack"). This puts pack–a–day users at the incredible total of
around $12,045 paid by the user for every year following this habit. The remaining seven dollars per
pack is either paid for by the family of the user, or it is paid for by society as a whole. This brings
about another reason smoking is not just expensive to the user, but to the economy of the whole
country. For every single smoker in the United States, the country as a whole pays on average
"$4,196––including higher medical and insurance costs, time lost through smoking rituals, burn
damage to furniture, adverse effects on non–smokers, [as well as] maintenance and cleaning costs"
("Hidden Annual Costs of Smoking"). With around 15% of the United States' population smoking,
this is an insanely high cost to the United States industry. If no one smoked, then more than 200
billion dollars would be saved every year in the US alone. Not only do cigarettes cost a lot to the
user and the economy, but their effects impact people close to them through secondhand smoke. By
eliminating the

Negative Effects Of Smoking And Smoking

  • 1. Negative Effects Of Smoking And Smoking Alcohol and tobacco have been around for thousands of years. Around 2,000 years ago tobacco began to be chewed and smoked during cultural or religious ceremonies and events. Cigarette making machines were not developed until the latter half of the 1800s. The first alcoholic beverage to gain popularity was Mead, a fermented drink made from honey and water. Mead was created in Greece. The Greek warned that it is okay to drink as long as it is not an excessive amount. Although smoking and drinking have become popular habits for people over the years they can have a negative impact on the human body. More than 20 million Americans are living with a disease caused by smoking. Cigarettes can cause cancer, heart disease, strokes, lung diseases, diabetes, and COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease). Smoking increases the risk of problems with the immune system, including Rheumatoid Arthritis and Tuberculosis. Most people think that cigarettes only damage your lungs but they affect entire cardiovascular system. Smoking has a huge impact on your energy levels. Smokers have a lower lung capacity than non– smokers which means that they get less oxygen in their lungs and that causes them to get less oxygen to the brain, muscles, and other bodily systems. Hair is also affected by the nicotine that is found in cigarettes. A study found that it increases hair loss and graying. [Last Name] 2 The ingredient in cigarettes that makes them so harmful is nicotine. Nicotine ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. The Negative Effects Of Smoking Nowadays, smoking is one of the most reasons which are killing people in the world. Most of the smokers are adult. But so many teenagers are smoking too. Some people said that they started to smoke as the teenager. The effects of smoking are common and dangerous but what most people don't realize. Smoking is a hard habit to break because tobacco contains nicotine, which is highly addictive. There are several negative effects of smoking that make people thinking about should they smoke or not: Health effects, Financial effects, Social effects. The first negative effect is health effect. Cigarette smoke contains around 4,800 chemicals, 69 of those can cause cancer. The effects of using tobacco are wide and varied but all of them are dangerous to every user's health. A study done by the American Lung Association states that smokers die significantly earlier than non– smokers. Smoking leads to lung cancer, heart disease, strokes, asthma and wide variety of other diseases. Smokers experience more coughs and colds as compared to non– smokers. Besides affecting oneself, it also has a negative impact on others around smokers which is also known as second hand smoking. Also, any pregnant women who are exposed to cigarettes smoke will have an increased risk of having abnormal baby. Smoking men and women have an average of 14 years of less life than a person who doesn't use tobacco. Smoking is obviously terrible. These facts plainly support that simple statement. The second negative effect is financial effect. Smoking can be expensive, for some, finances may be a motivation to quit. As a smoker, you are also charged higher rates for health and life insurance policies. Smokers are considered higher risk candidates for these types of insurance because of the increased risks of serious chronic illnesses, and the increased medical costs throughout our lifespan. If you need an added incentive to quit, think about how much of your weekly income is going up in smoke. One packet of 25 cigarettes costs around $27 and the price keeps rising. After three months of not smoking, you've saved almost $2,500. This is enough for a new computer or a TV. After six months, you've got over $4,900 to spend. You could take your family for a ... • 3. Cause And Effect Of Smoking Smoking, a practice of inhaling and exhaling smoke from burning tobacco, is a problem that is notorious for causing the death of more than 7 million people every year, and around 890,000 of those people are non–smokers that were exposed to second–hand smoke (World Health Organization). According to "Your Health Today: Choices in a Changing Society," smoking causes cardiovascular disease, lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases because of the content of approximately 600 chemical ingredients, which yield more than 4,800 substances when burnt (Teague 336–338). Not only are the smokers themselves harmed, but also non–smokers that are exposed to smokers' second–hand smoke, especially women, children, pregnant women, and fetus. For ... At the same time, tobacco was listed in U.S. Pharmacopoeia, the government's official list of drug (Gene Borio), but it was removed as the tobacco state legislators were bribed. Not until the dangerous effects of tobacco use become more noticeable did people realize that it was hard to quit consuming the cancerous substance, and the government made many efforts in an attempt to reduce tobacco consumption. In 1906, U.S. Justice Department was against the American Tobacco Company, the second–largest corporation in the United States, by filing charges anti–trust (Gene Borio). Not giving up, cigarette companies tried to get more loyal customers by sending millions of free cigarettes to the troops during World War I, getting more soldiers to smoke and be addicted so when they came home, they will have to buy cigarettes. Despite the increase of more researches that prove the fact tobacco worsens people's health, cigarette companies still deny it, while promoting "healthier" choices of tobacco products such as added filter and less toxic ingredients. After Congress passed the Federal Cigarette Labelling and Advertising Act, surgeon general's health warnings appear on cigarette packages by 1966 (Gene Borio). • 4. Environmental Effects Of Smoking Within the past few centuries, environmental tobacco smoke has been an issue. Smoking tobacco products is the leading, preventable cause of death in the United States. More than ten times of the deaths from smoking cigarettes have added up to be more deaths than all the wars fought by the United states (Jones, Page 65, 2016). There are more deaths caused each year from tobacco use than all deaths of HIV, illegal drug and alcohol use, car accidents, and murders combined (Judd, page 110, 2009). Smoking harms nearly every organ and part of the body, and affects one's overall health. The effects of smoking endangers nonsmokers, can create financial problems, and finally cause diseases and cancers. The first effect of smoking is that it endangers nonsmokers by exposure to secondhand smoke (ETS). Twyman Abbott claimed that smoking in public was worse than drinking alcohol because it created toxic fumes (Hirschfelder, page 145, 2010). Out of the 7,000 chemicals found in cigarettes, 250 of them are harmful (Jones, 2016, Page 70). The chemicals found in the cigarettes can affect the smoker themselves, and the people in the area around them. When someone smokes, they are putting other people's health in risk other than just themselves. This creating the issue of secondhand smoke. Some people can handle being in the smoke without being bothered and then others can't stand it. But for the people who already have health problems like asthma, or even allergies, environmental tobacco ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Cause And Effect On Smoking . One thing that people over 60 can do to make aging a healthier process is to avoid smoking. Smoking on average, decreases a person's life span by 14 years. Smoking is a leading cause of lung cancer (Aldwin & Gilmer, 2013). It is never to late for someone to stop smoking. With smoking cessation, the results are immediate. Those who quit smoking generally experience improvements in breathing and control of high blood pressure. Cessation of smoking brings a rapid reduction in risk of stroke and myocardial infarction and a slower reduction in the risk of cancer (Boston University School of Public Health, 2013). Good cholesterol is lowered in individuals who smoke and chances of atherosclerosis increases in the body due to an increase in blood fibrinogen and viscosity levels, which can lead to blood clots (Aldwin & Gilmer, 2013). 2. As people age, the individual's energy or caloric needs are less. However, the protein, vitamins and minerals requirements remain constant. Healthy older adults should increase the amount of protein the diet to maintain muscle mass, especially if the person is sick. Overweight individuals should consider lowering fat intake. Also, nutritional intakes should incorporate ample amounts of calcium and vitamins (Aldwin & Gilmer, 2013). The aging person should also consume fiber–rich foods such as whole grains, fruit, and vegetables which will make them feel more energetic and give you fuel to keep going (Saisan, Segal, & White, 2017). How we learn to smoke Health psychology looks at the complex array of biological, social and psychological factors that influence our health and illness–related behaviour. Smoking is a biological addiction, with nicotine as addictive as cocaine and heroin. However, there is more to being hooked on cigarettes than the physical addiction to nicotine. When people want to quit, they also have a psychological habit to break. Social learning theory describes how we learn by example from others. We are strongly influenced by our parents, and other people we look up to, such as peers, actors and pop stars. This can lead us to emulate their behaviour and try smoking. There is an almost immediate effect on our brains with those first cigarettes, so we keep smoking to get this reward. Later we learn to associate smoking with other activities such as drinking coffee, going to the pub, etc. We can become conditioned so just the thought of the activity triggers the need for a cigarette, ... • 14. Smoking Effects in America The one substance found in tobacco, which is in cigarettes, is nicotine, a highly addictive drug. The drug rearranges the chemicals in the brain, dopamine and noradrenaline, causing a change in mood and concentration, giving off a feeling of relaxation. The drug elevates the mood and heart rate but doesn't last for very long. Once the nicotine leaves the body, the addiction begins and a craving for another cigarette begins. Without replenishing the nicotine in the body, the body endures unpleasant withdrawal symptoms. The more someone smokes, the more the brain gets used to the drug, so a higher nicotine intake would be needed to get the same effect on a person who has been smoking all their life. With an addiction so strong, the surgeon general's study shows that nicotine has the same addiction, possibly even more, and behavior characteristics than heroin. Forums have been made requesting help on relationship that have problems because of the use of tobacco smoke. Replies showed two sides of people: those who are for and those who are opposed cigarette smoking. Those who are for the use are usually smokers themselves. Explaining the addiction of the drug is a smoker's reason as to why they partake in the drug although they know how life threatening it can be. Those who are opposed the use of tobacco are typically nonsmokers who explain the dangers in health and well–being of smokers. • 15. The Effects Of Tobacco Smoking Although free of nicotine, marijuana smoke certainly pollutes the lungs. And since tobacco smoking has been linked to respiratory injury, cancer, emphysema, heart disease, complications of pregnancy, low birth weight, and other ills, it makes sense to worry whether smoking marijuana might prove equally harmful (Mack and Joy). Marijuana joints have been shown to deliver at least four times as much tar to the lungs as tobacco cigarettes of equivalent weight. This difference is due to the lack of filters on joints and because marijuana smokers typically inhale a larger volume of smoke and take it more deeply into the lungs than tobacco smokers do. Marijuana smokers also tend to hold smoke in for a time before exhaling, exposing the lungs to even greater levels of cancer–causing agents. Clinical studies suggest that people who smoke marijuana are more likely to develop respiratory illnesses than are nonsmokers. A survey of outpatient medical visits at a large health maintenance organization (HMO) found that marijuana users were more likely to seek help for respiratory illnesses than people who smoked tobacco (Mack and Joy). While cannabis is harmful to the brain and lungs of the user, it is also harmful to the ones around the user. It has been shown that the effects of using cannabis are similar to those of alcohol and benzodiazepines and include slowing of reaction time, motor incoordination, specific defects in short–term memory, difficulty in concentration and particular ... If smoking is killing people every day, why would we want someone to poison ourselves with deadly air? When we are in a restaurant and someone is smoking we are breathing the same air that they are. Even though their lips are on the cancer stick the same toxins they are breathing in is being released in the air around them. Without proper ventilation (open fresh air), the people around the light cigarette would be breathing in those same toxins and poisons, which is second hand smoking. Smoking in a restaurant is not only harmful to the one smoking but to those around them. Smoking can cause loss of appetite, senses, side effects from second smoking and most of all the rights of a nonsmoker to not be presented to the smoke. Teeth take on a brownish color, and flat surfaces where the tar can accumulate can even become black, are all results of smoke staining teeth. Which can also cause wear on the biting surface of the teeth which leads to teeth decay. With gum disease the gums recede, they expose the roots of the teeth. If people who want to smoke then they can do so in the privacy of their own homes, where they can only hurt themselves and their loved ones. California has taken the first step by banning smoking in most indoor establishments. Yet more has to be done. It needs to be banned outdoors in public as well. Other atmospheric conditions can cause you to be affected from farther away. There will be arguments against this solution, the main one being personal freedom. A non–smoker's right to live in an uncontaminated and healthy environment is being violated by the smoker who chooses to engage in this repulsive habit.
