Supernatural Elements In Sir Gawain And The Green Knight...
A recurring theme that can be found throughout Arthurian literature is the mention of magic,
mythical creatures, and other supernatural elements. Arthur's own birth is a direct result of this. He
was conceived after his father had used a potion, with the help of Merlin, to disguise himself as
Igraine's husband before sex. In some legends, there is even an "Otherworld". The term Otherworld
has Celtic origins and is usually described as a separate plane of existence from the normal world.
Typically, it holds divine creatures or deities and can be entered by crossing a body of water. In
Arthurian legend, the addition of supernatural elements is used to not only advance the plot, but aid
the characters and often explain the unexplainable. Two ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The lord of the castle allows Gawain to stay there and sets up a proposal for a game. The lord says,
"Whatever I win out in the woods shall revert to you, and whatever you gain, be so good as to give it
to me". Gawain agrees and decides to sleep. The next day, while the lord is away, his lady attempts
to seduce Gawain. The lord's wife kisses Gawain, so he kisses the lord when he returns. On the third
day, the lady gives Gawain a girdle in which she claims possesses the power to protect the person
who wears it from dying. When the lord returns, Gawain breaks his promise and does not give the
lord the girdle. After this, Gawain sets off to find the Green Chapel. When he arrives, he stretches
out his neck to allow the Green Knight to cut his neck, not wanting to go back on the deal. The
Green Knight pretends to swing twice before cutting Gawain only enough to draw blood. It is then
revealed that the Green Knight is actually Bertilak, the lord of the castle in which Gawain stayed at.
Bertilak says, "It's all because of my beautiful girdle you're bearing, which my own wife formed–I
know this for a fact; for I'm conscious of your kisses and other conduct, playing games with my
spouse. I was the planner myself". Thus, Bertilak drew blood on the third swing in order to pay
Gawain back for lying. Bertilak also mentions to Gawain that this was all the work of Morgan Le
Faye and her magic is what changed Bertilak's appearance. By her doing this to make Gawain prove

Comparing Merlin And Gandalf
Both Merlin and Gandalf show a capacity for love, but Merlin's is more earthy and lustful. Merlin
meets Nineve, a servant of the Lady of the Lake, when King Pellinore brings her to the castle and he
falls very hard for her. Malory writes, "Merlin would not let her have no rest, but always he would
be with her" (Le Morte, 58). Nineve, on the hand, both fears Merlin and covets his power. As the
story tells, "and she was afraid of him for cause he was a devil's son" (Le Morte, 59). As discussed
earlier, Merlin is likely half human and half devil, and this scares Nineve, who can never love a
being like that. Love in Malory is always a story about power. Although Merlin lusted after Nineve,
this lust was very one–sided as she was simply interested ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Tolkien's world is often criticized as oversimplified and too black and white, where good triumphs
over evil, but this is hardly the case. Many of the greatest battles are losses for the good side, or
simply forestall the inevitable return of the villain. Morgoth, the original villain, one far more
powerful than Sauron, is predicted in the Silmarillion to return and end the world, similar to the
concept of Ragnarok in Norse mythology. However, Tolkien's world is less morally complex than
Camelot. Aside from the Saruman's betrayal, and perhaps Boromir, most of the characters of the
trilogy are pretty clearly either on the side of good or the side of evil. And this is apparent especially
in Gandalf, who never wavers in his commitment to do the right thing even if it means sacrificing
himself. Merlin, on the other hand, inhabits a morally ambiguous world, where love and power are
always intertwined and the means often seem to justify the ends. His first act in Le Morte is to
disguise his King in order to trick a woman into having the King's child, and his death comes
because he doesn't recognize that his love does not love him back. Merlin serves Arthur and Uther
faithfully, and gives them sage advice, but he is always scheming. Everything Merlin does, he does
it with his own motivations in

Differences Between King Camarus And Merlin
I wonder what the scene between the King, Camarus, and Merlin is insinuating. I am very confused
as to why the King would call his grandson to his quarters only to banish him as soon as he saw his
face. I have been pondering the reason behind this and have come up with a few possibilities.
The first possibility I have come up with is that he could have wanted to introduce the foreign King
to Merlin. Rumors were spreading that Niniane was betrothed to the foreign king, so it is very
possible that he wanted to see what she would be bringing into the marriage.
The King may have simply wanted to know what Merlin was up to, seeing as he sits on the wall
everyday watching visitors arrive. The foreign King could've reported seeing the boy on the wall,

Mordred's Story: Merlin
"What would the king say?" Mordred commented, as he watched Merlin carefully arrange stones
upon the pile of freshly turned earth. "Sorcerers aren't permitted marked graves." Merlin turned his
head abruptly, but not before Mordred recognized the mingled apprehension and resentment in his
eyes. The expression wrenched at his heart, for he knew that particular blend of feelings only too
well – the constant fear of living in a world which united in condemnation against those born with
magic, the ever present anger of having to witness your own people being subjected to a lifetime of
injustice, regardless of whether they used their powers to cause any harm. That flicker of emotion
was evidence of scars that were etched upon the souls of countless

Short Story: Merlin
"Well then." Arthur crossed his arms and began a slow pace around Merlin, giving the man a wide
berth and getting back to the facts as he knew them. "I recognize it as the very same weapon my
father used against the Black Knight––there's no mistaking it, and I'm positive you wielded it
against the Immortal Army. I can only guess that magic veiled its true nature from us back then. It
looked like a common sword to me, not the one my father had used." He saw a shadow of guilt
cloud Merlin's eyes and felt being closer to hitting the mark. "I could be mistaken about this next
part, but I don't think I am. It was made with dragon's fire and for a time, it was ... submerged

I have magic." Bright gold flashed in Merlin's eyes and the fire roared into being in the hearth.
Arthur took a hesitant step back as Merlin incanted a spell and a fiery dragon emerged from the
flames, flapping its wings in a skyward spiral before dissolving into embers to drift silently to the
floor. "All I've ever used it for was to protect you, your kingdom, our friends, and the innocent.
Magic can be used for good, too."
Instinctually, Arthur's sword hand twitched with the thought to run him through, but instead his lips
pressed hard together and his eyes glazed with bitter water. From the moment he touched Excalibur,
all of those gnawing questions he chose to ignore since Merlin stumbled into his life began to piece
together bit by bit yet only led to even more questions that he could not grasp hold of completely.
Merlin was Emrys somehow, a not–so–doddery old sorcerer after all, but a young warlock with
unimaginable power.
And Balinor. Now Arthur understood Merlin's heartbreak over the death of a stranger. Balinor had
died in his son's arms and Arthur's final words about no man's death being worth another man's tears
had probably skewed Merlin's heart as much as it did his now. How wrong Arthur had been, for he'd
shed tears over his own father's passing when Merlin had forced out a weak jest to cover up his loss.
Never had he expected this. Arthur had no words, his mouth dry and a headache threatened while
humility and shame ruffled about the

Assignment: Question one, essay on Merlin
Word count: 1,406
The purpose of this essay is to investigate future pricing policy for Merlin for the tower. A brief
review of Merlin's management of the Blackpool Tower will be highlighted, and then using
economic tools of analysis, it will clarify the concept of pricing discrimination and how companies
use prices to attract certain kinds of customer. Followed by, the use of price and attendance data
from other attractions, such as Camelot and Alton Towers to support the argument. Finally the essay
will come to a conclusion.
`Merlin Entertainment in 2010 took over the management of Blackpool Tower, one of the U.K.'s
more iconic tourist attractions. The Tower was built in 1894, and ... Show more content on

This should also bring supplementary visitor spending of £36 million and create up to new 1,000
jobs (The Times of London, 2010). Placing these figures in a demand curve will show a dramatic
change (See Figure 3, Appendix 1)
It is recommended a bit of both first and third pricing discrimination for Merlin. It is recommended
that prices be raised, overall, as the service offering is improved. Recommending discounts for
family groups, senior citizens, the disabled, and college students. Under prior management, entrance
to the tower was priced at £17 for adults, £14 for seniors and children payable at the door, with a £3
discount for those booking online. For this, customers gained access to all facilities, as well as
admission to the circus show. Merlin has the monopoly of the market therefore having market share
in the entertainment sector put Merlin in advantage.
By recommending, as averred above, a very aggressive price discrimination strategy for Merlin's as
part of its pricing strategy for this project, and as a means to differentiate the theme park's offerings
from those of rivals, Camelot and Alton Towers. But this will be accompanied by other marketing
changes. Rival Camelot currently charges £24 for adults' entry to its theme park, the same price for
children over a meter tall, and £15 for senior citizens. Alton Towers charges £31.68 for an adult
ticket, £24.48 for a child, and does not offer a senior

The Last Enchantment By Mary Stewart Summary
"The Last Enchantment" was the third book in Mary Stewarts Arthurian saga. The first two books,
"The Crystal Cave" and "The Hollow Hills", tells the story of how Merlin came to be the powerful
Wizard and how he and Arthur became close. All of the stories are told from Merlin's point view as
he follows Arthur on his adventures. In Stewart's second book, "The Hollow Hills", Arthur's half–
sister Morgause tricks him into bedding her. Arthur did not know who his parents were and did not
realize he had just committed incest. Merlin finds out about the relationship and tells Morgause what
a shame she is and tells her to leave. Arthur then learns his parentage but the people do not agree
with this. Arthur must prove he is the rightful king by removing the sword Caliburn from the stone
barrier. Of course he does and takes his rightful place as the High King. ... Show more content on

magic and then falls in love with her. Ninian is the one who sees Guinevere and Bedwry affair and

"Do you really want to do this?" Merlin asked.
"Do you really want to kill him? You know the future kingdom he shall create. And people like you

Merlin's Character In The Legend Of Geoffrey Merlin And...
Merlin is considered one of the most strongest sorcerer that lives Camelot. He is Arthur's adviser, as
well as a prophet and sorcerer. Merlin's powers were so powerful that other wizards and sorcerers
looked up to him as a leader. His role in the Arthurian legend is to protect and serve the lands of
Camelot. The Life of Merlin gave him the qualities of an humble man, who took pleasure in
loneliness. The source provided descriptive details of Merlin's actions and how they affected others
in relations to his selfishness. In the narrative, Monmouth wrote Merlin to be a man who wanted
nothing to do with anyone, except for himself. After the 1900's, author of The Daughter of Merlin
took a different perspective and gave the character a child that shared the same qualities. Gaster
gave new meaning to Merlin's character that will be put in texts of the Arthurian Legend. In the
narratives, The Life of Merlin by Geoffrey Monmouth and The Daughter of Merlin by Madison J
Cawein, Merlin's character changes as different authors rewrite his character. He changes from a
sorcerer living on his own to a sorcerer who has a daughter with his same abilities, because over a
certain time period the authors wanted to evolve Merlin into more caring, passionate character. For
example, Monmouth provides Merlin's character with the sense of self–serving attitude. The author
incorporates a battle, which Merlin's leads and succeeds with the victory of the battle. In return of
the victorious battle, the

Magic is neither good nor evil. In the wrong hands, it can bring harm, but in the hands of a hero

The Freedom Of Travelling On Horseback
To Arthur there was nothing like the freedom of travelling on horseback. The few times when he sat
in the car and watched Merlin steer their way across the countryside along the roads it felt
unsatisfying to him. The world passed by the windows too fast for Arthur to take in his new
surroundings. He needed to feel the elements around him, like the sun on his face or the wind
blowing into his hair as it did today. Here in the wide open air it smelled like humid soil, grass and
flowers. That was far better to him then the confined feel and the awful smell of the car. Not to
mention that he still did not trust the machine. It had the power to kill as far as he was concerned,
and it put the fear in him. For some reason he could not get passed the image of how close he came
losing Gwaine to one... Arthur steered his horse through known territory as fast as he dared. The
thrilling gallop made him feel alive again. In the last few hours he had felt more like his old self
than ever since he came to this century. This century... it still stunned him that so much time had
passed in a matter of what felt like days to him. The way Camelot got snapped away from him in a
blip of time made him feel as if part of his heart was ripped out. For his entire life he had known
nothing else than it. He fought for his people and protected it with every fibre of his being. To be left
without such a cause and without the love of his people, including his friends, was just too much to
bear at times.

Merlin's The Once And Future King Merlin
Merlin really didn't get paid enough for his job.
Oh, no, he wasn't talking about his manservant position – although honestly it would be nice to get a
raise in that area as well. It was Merlin's unofficial responsibilities that were definitely not being
compensated enough.
See, many many years ago (about five actually), a giant chained up dragon had told Merlin it was
his destiny to protect some arrogant, pratty prince from all the evils in the world. 'There's a
prophecy', the dragon had said. 'He's the Once and Future King, Merlin', 'He'll bring back magic,
Merlin'.
That was all right and good, but his reward of future promises were starting to sour in the present.
Merlin wasn't sure he could wait that long. In fact, at the rate King ... Show more content on

Merlin got the message loud and clear – 'stay here'. It was so nice to be appreciated.
"I hope the deer mauls you." Merlin whispered treacherously, never mind the fact that deer don't
maul, and if this one did, Merlin would probably actually charge in and rescue his friend.
A couple yards ahead, Arthur's shoulders rose.
He didn't hear that, did he? Merlin wondered, then shrugged to himself. So what? It was nothing he
wouldn't say to the man's face.
Now having nothing to do but stand, Merlin's attention wandered from Arthur's advancing back. His
mind went to Camelot, and he began to wonder what Gauis would cook for supper, and just what
Gwen (er, Queen Guinevere) was doing back at the castle.
Something twinged in his chest, and he realized he missed Gwen. Yes, he saw her every morning
when he fetched the King and Queen their breakfast, and he often spotted her and smiled at her as he
ran through the halls on a errard for Gauis or Arthur.
But he hadn't really seen her lately – he hadn't spoken with her, hadn't teased her about Arthur or
complemented her hair.
Queen Guinevere was turning out to be a clever and compassionate ruler, and Merlin was happy for
her but...

Lord Of The Flies By William Arthur
Arthur stood by the window and gazed longingly out of it. He began daydreaming. He imagined
what his knights were doing at that moment. Lancelot was probably helping some poor servant with

blacksmith run his forge, Leon was probably training or on duty (he always seems to be doing extra
shifts), and Percival was probably lifting weights or reading. Arthur for the life of him couldn't work
out what that big guy would get up to in his spare time.

He was a horrible servant but he was good friend, no matter what Arthur said aloud, and being

"You are dismissed."
Arthur bowed and exited the dark hall.
–END FLASHBACK–
Now, as Arthur was eating and Merlin was folding all his master's clothes, Arthur reached into his
pocket and pulled out the tall glass bottle. He quietly popped of the top and poured singular drop of
liquid into his goblet of water. "Merlin," Merlin turned hearing his name. "Come sit here and have a
drink. You look exhausted."
Merlin walked almost cautiously over to the table. "Be careful, sire. Keep this up and I might get the
impression that you care about me!" Merlin jested. He sat and took the goblet from Arthur's
outstretched hand and drank deeply.
Arthur watched Merlins expression as it morphed from an annoying grin to a look of disorientation
or something of the like. "Merlin?" Arthur cried as his manservants eyes glazed over. "Are you
alright?" "Yes," came Merlin's response in a monotone voice, his expression completely blank.
Arthur figured that the truth serum was working in its very creepy way. "What is your name?"

Evolution Of Merlin Research Paper
Arthurian Literature: The Evolution of Merlin
In all the long history of literature, some fictional characters have loomed above others, written
about again and again by various authors of various eras. Arthurian literature is one area of fiction
that has always been popular for writers to recreate in new versions, and one of the most intriguing
characters of all Arthurian literature is Merlin, the magician/ prophet who aids Arthur early in his
reign. As the Arthurian saga develops, so does Merlin, changing from an aloof, druidical character
into a more human, magical being, though always retaining some traces of his Welsh origins.
Merlin gains his first mention in eight ancient Welsh poems attributed to the ... Show more content

Here we first meet the character Merlinus ("Merdinus," a more exact Latinization of the original
Welsh, was impractical because of its similarity to the Latin or French word for excrement, surely an
inappropriate name for a great hero). (Bruce) Yet the Merlin of this story is not the great magician of
later works. In his tale, Geoffrey uses not the Latin word "magus," which would imply that Merlin
was some sort of sorcerer, but rather the word "vates," commonly indicating a poet or, often, a
prophet or seer. (Tatlock) Merlin does exhibit many features of a mystic in Geoffrey's Historia: he
uses clairvoyance in the familiar case, borrowed from Nennius, of Vortigern's vanishing tower; he
foretells Vortigern's death and prophesies to Aurelius and Uther of Arthur's coming reign, also
making several predictions about political events occuring just prior to the publication of the
Historia; and he interprets to Uther Pendragon a portent of the death of the king Aurelius Ambrosius.
(Bruce) Clairvoyance, prophecy, and the interpretation of dreams are all rather shamanistic actions
that would fit Merlin's Welsh character as a druid.
Merlin is not yet a romance magician in Geoffrey's work: the few feats later expanded into mighty
demonstrations of magic are not so in Geoffrey. Merlin disguises Uther as Gorlois for his rendevous
with Igerne using "medicamenta," which could include

Good And Evil In The Film Merlin
The film 'Merlin' (1998), produced by Hallmark Home Entertainment and directed by Steve Baron,
based on an Arthurian myth explores the role of good and evil, the idea of equality and gender roles
in their society. Myths have been told since human society had formed, teaching people important
lessons and morals. Myths communicate everything from what is ethically right to lessons and
morals that prevent regrettable mistakes. Through the film seen from Merlin's perspective, it will be
evident that such complex myths can, when broken down, teach such important lessons and morals.
Good and evil in 'Merlin' is somewhat vague; it is difficult to know who is good and who is evil. Not
everything is black and white, and you cannot simply decide who is good and evil. In 'Merlin' the ...

In 'Merlin' the concept of equality is simple, but in extreme scenarios is corruptible. King Arthur is
in a war with Lord Lot and when the two sides meet, King Arthur sorts out the war by going to Lord

Guinevere had betrayed him with Sir Lancelot, he is forced to sentence her to treason. Queen
Guinevere was about to die from burning, but King Arthur changed his mind and told Merlin to cast

"The fact we did this together means something. I don't give a damn about my time." He draped
Merlin's arm over his shoulder and wrapped a muscular arm around his waist. "We are finishing this.

"I will drag you across the finish line if I have to."
Merlin saw the fierce determination in his best friend's eyes and nodded.
Slowly, hobbling along, Merlin and Lancelot drew closer and closer to the finish line. The crowd
went wild for them, shouting encouragement and snapping photos with their cell phones.
Merlin and Lancelot were a mere few yards from the end when Merlin spotted their friends standing

Lancelot," as they hopped up and down and screamed their bloody lungs out.
As the two best friends dragged themselves across the line–finishing with their worst time ever–
Merlin could not conjure up a shred of disappointment. He was bleeding and pained, but he and

The Real Merlin Essay
From the shores of Avalon to the court of King Arthur, tales and accounts of the mystical Merlin
abound. Did Merlin really exist, and if so, was he the dark magical wizard of legend or an image
conjured up by superstitious townsfolk to explain occurrences they didn't understand? To answer
this question, one should first look at the actual accomplishments of the figure Merlin. When was
the character introduced and what did he do afterwards? What kinds of feats did this person
accomplish to make him as well known as he is? Secondly, Merlin was well known as a mythical
figure. How did this mythical figure emerge and what aspects of his life do we still remember to this
day? As the son of a devil, was Merlin an evil character or a good ... Show more content on

Many stories of the Arthurian legend contain some reference to Merlin, as either a wizard or a
prophet. As a magician, Merlin performed feats such as the moving of Stonehenge, the disguising of
Uther Pendragon, and the crowning of King Arthur by the use of the sword in the stone (Fletcher
25). As a prophet, Merlin told of the defeat of the Saxons, the death of Arthur, and the one who
found the Holy Grail.
Almost everyone knows the story The Sword in the Stone by T.H. White wherein Merlin instructed
Arthur in his life as king, but what most don't know is that Merlin was, in legend, the son of a devil.
An incubus came and bedded with Merlin's mother so that she would bear his child (Ackerman
168). One story that shows the significance of this union is Geoffrey of Monmouth's Historia regum
Britannae. In this book there is a section that tells the tale of Vortigern and Ambrosius. Vortigern, the
King of Britain at the time, wants to build a new retreat, but every night the foundation is destroyed.
Vortigern's wise men tell him he must sprinkle the spot with the blood of a child born fatherless.
After a long and tedious search, Ambrosius is found and brought before Vortigern. Ambrosius tells
the King not to slay him but to dig in the spot for two vases. Those digging found these two vases
and inside were two tents. Inside the two tents were a red dragon and a white dragon. These
creatures fought each other

Merlin: A Fictional Narrative
Merlin noticed her distress and squeezed her hand. "Everything I've gone through made me who I
am now. Destiny hasn't always been kind to me–until she led me to you."
Della swallowed back the warring feelings in her chest. She wanted to believe it, to hold onto that
small fragment of hope, but the encompassing doubt overshadowed it quickly.
"Are you sure about that?" She let go of his hand and resumed wrapping his wound. "You seem to

blurred with tears as she remembered everything that occurred in Havenswood and the loss of
Ealhwyn.

It took a moment for the words to sink in on his end. "Mmmhmm," he finally mumbled, lightly

Supernatural Elements in Arthurian Literature
Two texts that showcase this are "Sir Gawain and
the Green Knight" and "Prose Merlin".
In "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight", the Green Knight's supernatural ability is used in order to
provide Gawain the adventure he needs in order to prove himself to the other knights. In the eighth
section in part one, the author describes the Green Knight as a "creature", immediately implying to
the readers that the Green Knight isn't entirely human and of a different world. This is further
confirmed when Gawain, the only knight to take the Green Knight up on his offer, accepts the
challenge of cutting off the Green Knight's head. After the Green Knight is decapitated, his body
proceeds to pick up the disembodied

Comparing The Legend Of King Arthur And Merlin
The legend of King Arthur has inspired, and continues to inspire, many retellings of the well known
stories and cast of characters. Ranging from film to literature to art, these retellings often include
depictions of two key characters in the legend: King Arthur and and the wizard Merlin. Disney's The
Sword and the Stone (1963) and the British Broadcasting Corporation program Merlin (2008–2012)
both showcase the relationship between Merlin and Arthur in the development of Arthur, but they
differ in approach; in the animated version, Merlin assumes the role of a mentor while the television
program depicts Merlin as a friend to Arthur.
In Disney's The Sword and the Stone, Merlin fulfills the role of the mentor as described by the
hero's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This shows the value of many teachers in the development of Arthur because Arthur is taught by
Archimedes basic and necessary skills which Arthur would use in his kingship, while Merlin teaches
Arthur the importance of values and moral standards. This also shows that different teachers can
impart equally relevant, but different wisdom. It mirrors society's knowing of 'human–ess' because it
show that the society believes one person does not know everything, and that a well–rounded
individual needs many teachers to know the finer points of specific topics.
In contrast, in the television program Merlin, Merlin takes on the role as a friend to help Arthur
develop as a king. Immediately, the viewers know Merlin is not afraid to be direct with Arthur, then
the prince, when Merlin calls him a "prat" to his face. At first, this name calling is meant to be
insultive, but as the series narrative progresses, Arthur and Merlin become friends so when Merlin
calls Arthur a "prat" it is meant in a joking manner. This banter is most seen through the episode
from the final season "The Death Song of Uther Pendragon." This episode serves as a small scale
example of Merlin's role throughout the series as both a comical friend but still a valuable source of
serious encouragement. In one scene, the comical banter between the two is readily apparent:
Arthur: [as Merlin creeps closer to the village where a woman is screaming] What are you doing?

Merlin stamped hard on Arthur's foot. George looked appalled. The envelope fell to the floor. Arthur
grabbed Merlin around his neck, pulled him close, and gave him a noogie. Merlin squirmed for all
he was worth, but Arthur grabbed both his arms in one of his and kept rubbing firmly on his head.
Merlin wanted to bite the prince to make him let go, but figured that might be a step too far,
especially in front of witnesses. He tried kicking instead, but Arthur had him in an awkward
position. His face was jammed into Arthur's torso, so he couldn't even voice his protests.

Merlin turned his attention to the red, glitter–covered envelope. What would the Princess Morgana
possibly have to send to him?
Not caring that he was sitting on the cold tiles of the tiny bathroom, he ripped open the envelope.
Shiny confetti fell out, silver snowflakes, evergreen trees, candy canes, and golden stars. Merlin
pulled out a delicate piece of parchment. Inside a border of holly leaves and red berries, ornate
writing proclaimed:
"Her Royal Highness, the Princess Morgana Pendragon, cordially invites you to the annual Camelot
Palace Youth Christmas Party. This year's party will be held Saturday, December 17, at 6:00 pm in
the West Parlour. Formal dress required. Please RSVP to the palace steward by December 15."
Merlin reread the invitation, bemused. How had he gotten invited to a party hosted by the princess?
He had no business attending an event like that. He wouldn't know anybody except for Arthur, and
he doubted the prince would want him to tag along. He'd probably pretend to not even know him,
the scrawny little poor boy from nowhere who was still sharing a bed with his mum. Besides, Merlin
had no formal clothes to wear. He really didn't think his worn out button–up shirt was going to cut it.
Nor did he have any idea about how to interact with the kinds of hoity–toity people who were likely
to be invited to such an event.

She should have seen then that the obnoxious prince was becoming a man who would question his
father's methods, his judgements, and demand fairness instead.
Morgana's thoughts went back to that incident as she and Merlin sat down to supper later. The
lateness of the hour combined with an extended period of using magic had left them both ravenous
and Essetir may be far from a wealthy kingdom but she could set a fair enough table for two.
At the time that Arthur called a halt to Gaius's execution, coolly postponing his father's judgement
over Aredian's vehement protests, and then demanded another hearing in front of the king, Arthur's
boldness had surprised her. Not that she had ever doubted his courage, but it was the first time she
saw him openly oppose his father without any prompting from her. Morgana had not so much as
spoken one word to Uther about Gaius; too afraid to leave her room, too afraid everyone would see
her terror and guess its cause. It had been Arthur who demanded justice.

Merlin : A Hero
What makes someone a hero? The qualities that a person has can make them a hero. In the movie
Merlin, produced by Dyson Lovell, Merlin ishows that he is a hero. He stands goes against what is
expected of him, he saves the life of his love in a unique way, and he stands up for what he believes
in. Merlin is a unique type of hero, he doesn't follow the social norms, and who stands out among
the rest. To be a hero one must be brave. To be brave means that one must be able to face fears,
stand up for what one believes in, and that one will not give up no matter how difficult the task is. In
the movie Merlin, Merlin proves his heroism by showing that he is brave. One of the ways that
Merlin shows that he is brave is by standing up against Mab. Mab had created Merlin so that he
could bring back the old ways, but he does not want to use his powers in this way. Merlin only
wants to use his powers to destroy Mab. As Mab says "With evil all around me I can do nothing but
evil to survive."(Merlin). This shows that Mab is evil. Merlin also shows that he is brave by saving
Nimue. Vortigern had sacrificed Nimue to the dragons at Mabs request (Merlin). But Merlin uses his
powers along with nature to save Nimue. Facing a dragon takes a lot a bravery. Another way that
merlin shows that he is brave when he walks away from Nimue while in the doorway to magic
(Merlin). Mab had created a world for Nimue and Merlin so that they could live forever together,
but also so that Merlin would be out

Arthur expected Guinevere to be shocked. He expected her to sit back and gape and demand to
know how it was possible that Merlin, their clumsy, quirky, bizarre friend, was born to become the
most powerful warlock in the world. Or perhaps–the more likely reaction–he expected her to
become lightheaded and overwhelmed and to stare at him in flabbergasted silence.
All in all, he expected her to be just as mystified as he was.
And, at first, the King thought he would be perfectly satisfied with Gwen's reaction.
However, after her eyes widened and mouth popped open marginally, she did something that he
never would have expected of her.
She started to laugh. Hard. So hard that she hugged herself with one arm and had tears of hilarity

You'd do well to remember that.
There's no way he's a sorcerer.
Each word, a dagger to his heart. Each syllable, another reason to be afraid that Arthur would never

He was trying to see Merlin as a stranger in light of this new information.
With a small smile on her face, she shifted closer to him and said, "It's still Merlin, and shouldn't
you be grateful that, of all men to possess such magic, it is Merlin?"
Merlin. Loyal. Brave. Selfless. Wise. Nosy. Insolent. Cheerful. Intelligent. Friend. Brother. Idiot.

the extremities of his protectiveness, humility, and oddities in both the magical and non–magical

The Great Ancestry Of The Crown Of Camelot
The old scholar practically beamed as he unrolled the next scroll. "Let it be known, the great
ancestry of the crown of Camelot."
Geoffrey began to read off lineage that most nobles in Camelot knew by heart, until he came to the
one that Merlin both anticipated and feared. The warlock was trembling, as he awaited the signal
from the dais. His hand gripped the dragon bone hilt of Carnwenhau, drawing deep on the strength
within himself. He silently asked that his grandfather, who once wore the dagger, to be with him.
"...His Majesty, High King of Briton, Aurelius Ambrosius in the Great Marriage Rite with a druid
priestess begat a son, Balinor Emrys of the Dragon Lord line, Earl of Snowdonia..."

she was going to think of the next part.
"This has been corroborated by His Royal Majesty, King Lot of Lothian and the High Druid Iseldir.
Lord Balinor, joined to Hunith of Ealdor, in turn begat one son."
Merlin took a deep breath and stepped partially out of the shadows, standing near the entrance to the
Great Hall. The 'Great Marriage Rite ' to validify Balinor 's heritage was a bit of a stretch. Although
recognized as a joining among the druidic population and others who still revered the Old Religion,

excitement. He hears a man scream as if in mortal danger. A robed man emerges holding something
high in his hands. The others in the group circle him. Later, that night Merlin discovers that Belasius
is also a Druid Priest. Belasius tells Merlin that he must study the Goddess with him, or he will be
cursed. This too is added to Merlin's studies. Merlin's character is further defined. Merlin becomes
an intelligent and confident young man.
Years later during the conflict between Uther and Vortigern, Merlin sits upon a hill watching one
battle in particular. When the battle is over, he walks amongst the dead soldiers and injured on the
battlefield. He finds a dying soldier and stabs him in the neck to ease his passing. This shows a
colder, tougher Merlin. It shows he has become detached from the emotions of men. It is at that
moment that Merlin loses some of the humanity that was in the vulnerable bastard boy. He is no
longer that scared, fearful

Short Story: Merlin
"It's about Morgane," said Lionel. "Our men from the eastern garrison at the Vale of Ewyas returned
just after sundown. And the news they brought was grim."
"All of them returned? How many men did we have there, thirty, forty?"
"Close to fifty, I believe. And..." Lionel's features creased even more with concern "...and only four
returned."
Perceval closed his eyes and blew out a breath. "What happened to them?" he asked, though he
knew the likely answer.
"Morgane and her men descended on them, and they were forced to retreat. The soldiers reported
she used black magic, torturing and killing our men as they fled. And there's more... The survivors
counted Morgane's forces outnumber ours three to one. At least.

While Merlin has made it clear to most that his magical abilities amount to 'no more than interesting
parlor tricks,' however, even mediocre magic gives us an advantage and we will accept the help."
The king turned toward his advisor and former tutor. "Merlin."
"I will do all I can, that's a promise." Merlin's copper–colored hair stood awry and he adjusted his
spectacles nervously as he spoke. "I only hope, no matter what happens, you will not think less of
me."
The knights assured Merlin they would accept any help with gratitude.
"I believe it is settled, then," said the king. "Tomorrow, at sunrise, we ride out. And I must require all
knights who are not on duty remain confined to their quarters from midnight on. It is essential you
get proper rest." The knights grumbled, but Arthur carried on. "That will give you plenty of time to
pay visits and say goodbye to your loved ones. There will be no exceptions. I am sorry. You are all
dismissed."
The knights remained in the Hall for a short time, discussing their ideas and concerns, but most
didn't want to linger. Only a few hours of freedom were left, and the men planned to make good use
of each and every moment, Perceval included. He had to get to Joan.
After sharing a few words with Lionel and Gawain, he rushed from the Hall, but Gawain

Le Morte Darthur, Gandalf And Merlin
In a 1967 essay, J. R. R. Tolkien said he saw Gandalf as an angelic being, given the form of an old
man to limit his powers on earth. He would never say the same of Merlin. While Tolkien drew much
inspiration from Arthurian legend, especially Sir Thomas Malory's Le Morte Darthur, Gandalf and
Merlin are very different characters. Merlin is a man, one whose role in much of Arthurian legend is
as a loyal servant of the Kings of Camelot, willing to do anything to help them. He also rarely
performs serious acts of magic. Gandalf, on the other hand, is a warrior mage, an immortal being
sent to protect the people of Middle Earth. He displays a powerful use of magic as well, and unlike
Merlin, rallies the people of Middle Earth to his cause and gives ... Show more content on

King Uther, whom Merlin serves, falls in love with Igraine, the wife of a neighboring duke, but the
duke refuses to allow Uther to have her, and Igraine is too loyal a woman to willingly commit
adultery. So, Merlin devises a plan, telling Uther, "this night ye shall lie with Igraine . . . and ye shall
be like the duke her husband, Ulfias will be like Sir Brastias . . . and I will be like Sir Jordanus" (Le
Morte, 5). Merlin had disguised the men so well that they took on the appearance of other people,
enough that Igraine believed Uthor was her husband. Merlin's greatest feats usually involve
shapeshifting and disguise, as well as perhaps prophecy. After Merlin comes to Arthur in the guise
of a child, and then an old man, to tell him about his parentage, he says, "But I ever ought to be
heavy, for I shall die a shameful death, to be put in the earth quick, and ye shall die a worshipful
death" (Le Morte, 23). This foreshadows Merlin's death at the hands of his protégé Nineve, and
Arthur's death at the end of the book, and illustrates that Merlin has some knowledge of the events
in the future. He demonstrates this once again after subduing Sir Pellinore, when he tells Arthur,
"And he shall tell you the name of your own son begotten of your sister that shall be the destruction
of all this realm" (Le Morte, 29). Through his powers of foresight, Merlin can pinpoint what will
bring about the end of Camelot. Gandalf, although immortal and powerful, rarely shows these
powers of foresight. The future in Lord of the Rings is something that cannot be known, only fought

Merlin In Mary Stewart's Hollow Hills
Merlin, a prophet with the gift of sight in Mary Stewart's "Hollow Hills" plays the protagonists in
the quest to make Arthur King. He has several magical abilities including most notably his gift of
sight and magic. These powers bring him comfort in time of despair and guidance in his quest to
make Arthur King. These powers are what Merlin is most known for but without his "human
powers" Merlin wouldn't be who we picture him to be today. Merlin has several human
characteristics such as a gift of dialect and the ability to manipulate and adapt to his environment
that serves as powers in his quest. Merlin uses his sight to guide him while talking to others. He
knew that he had to betray the Duke of Cornwall at the beginning of the novel ... Show more content

This power that has been tremendously helpful saving Merlin in a tight situation. These situations
include the letter in Greek for the spies and when talking to Llyd and his followers. One–day when
Merlin returned to the cave he came across spies. They were quick on their feet and lied about their
intentions. Merlin heard one of their men speak in their native tongue and knew that they must be
spies. To deter them from following him he gave them a letter in Greek that would have to be
translated and once translated tell of Arthurs whereabouts. The details enclosed were fake and only
added time for Merlin to escape (214–224). It was a battle of wits where Merlin prevailed and could
continue his quest. This quick thinking saved him from a worse fate. Another instance where Merlin
uses his power of dialect was in the forest when he and his mare were taken by the "Old Ones". In
this scene, Merlin remains claim while Llyd and his men are searching his stuff While they
rummage through his things they speak in their native tongue which is an older version of welsh.
Merlin lucky understood them and could control the situation. He could use this power to gain
information about the sword and seek protection for Arthur. Gaining yet another group of people
that will pledge their allegiance to Arthur (240–248). Being able to understand different dialects has
opened so many doors for Merlin as he travels and helps him get out of sticky

Supernatural Elements In Sir Gawain And The Green Knight...

  • 1. Supernatural Elements In Sir Gawain And The Green Knight... A recurring theme that can be found throughout Arthurian literature is the mention of magic, mythical creatures, and other supernatural elements. Arthur's own birth is a direct result of this. He was conceived after his father had used a potion, with the help of Merlin, to disguise himself as Igraine's husband before sex. In some legends, there is even an "Otherworld". The term Otherworld has Celtic origins and is usually described as a separate plane of existence from the normal world. Typically, it holds divine creatures or deities and can be entered by crossing a body of water. In Arthurian legend, the addition of supernatural elements is used to not only advance the plot, but aid the characters and often explain the unexplainable. Two ... The lord says, "Whatever I win out in the woods shall revert to you, and whatever you gain, be so good as to give it to me". Gawain agrees and decides to sleep. The next day, while the lord is away, his lady attempts to seduce Gawain. The lord's wife kisses Gawain, so he kisses the lord when he returns. On the third day, the lady gives Gawain a girdle in which she claims possesses the power to protect the person who wears it from dying. When the lord returns, Gawain breaks his promise and does not give the lord the girdle. After this, Gawain sets off to find the Green Chapel. When he arrives, he stretches out his neck to allow the Green Knight to cut his neck, not wanting to go back on the deal. The Green Knight pretends to swing twice before cutting Gawain only enough to draw blood. It is then revealed that the Green Knight is actually Bertilak, the lord of the castle in which Gawain stayed at. Bertilak says, "It's all because of my beautiful girdle you're bearing, which my own wife formed–I know this for a fact; for I'm conscious of your kisses and other conduct, playing games with my spouse. I was the planner myself". Thus, Bertilak drew blood on the third swing in order to pay Gawain back for lying. Bertilak also mentions to Gawain that this was all the work of Morgan Le Faye and her magic is what changed Bertilak's appearance. By her doing this to make Gawain prove ... • 5. Comparing Merlin And Gandalf Both Merlin and Gandalf show a capacity for love, but Merlin's is more earthy and lustful. Merlin meets Nineve, a servant of the Lady of the Lake, when King Pellinore brings her to the castle and he falls very hard for her. Malory writes, "Merlin would not let her have no rest, but always he would be with her" (Le Morte, 58). Nineve, on the hand, both fears Merlin and covets his power. As the story tells, "and she was afraid of him for cause he was a devil's son" (Le Morte, 59). As discussed earlier, Merlin is likely half human and half devil, and this scares Nineve, who can never love a being like that. Love in Malory is always a story about power. Although Merlin lusted after Nineve, this lust was very one–sided as she was simply interested ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Tolkien's world is often criticized as oversimplified and too black and white, where good triumphs over evil, but this is hardly the case. Many of the greatest battles are losses for the good side, or simply forestall the inevitable return of the villain. Morgoth, the original villain, one far more powerful than Sauron, is predicted in the Silmarillion to return and end the world, similar to the concept of Ragnarok in Norse mythology. However, Tolkien's world is less morally complex than Camelot. Aside from the Saruman's betrayal, and perhaps Boromir, most of the characters of the trilogy are pretty clearly either on the side of good or the side of evil. And this is apparent especially in Gandalf, who never wavers in his commitment to do the right thing even if it means sacrificing himself. Merlin, on the other hand, inhabits a morally ambiguous world, where love and power are always intertwined and the means often seem to justify the ends. His first act in Le Morte is to disguise his King in order to trick a woman into having the King's child, and his death comes because he doesn't recognize that his love does not love him back. Merlin serves Arthur and Uther faithfully, and gives them sage advice, but he is always scheming. Everything Merlin does, he does it with his own motivations in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Differences Between King Camarus And Merlin I wonder what the scene between the King, Camarus, and Merlin is insinuating. I am very confused as to why the King would call his grandson to his quarters only to banish him as soon as he saw his face. I have been pondering the reason behind this and have come up with a few possibilities. The first possibility I have come up with is that he could have wanted to introduce the foreign King to Merlin. Rumors were spreading that Niniane was betrothed to the foreign king, so it is very possible that he wanted to see what she would be bringing into the marriage. The King may have simply wanted to know what Merlin was up to, seeing as he sits on the wall everyday watching visitors arrive. The foreign King could've reported seeing the boy on the wall, ... "Sorcerers aren't permitted marked graves." Merlin turned his head abruptly, but not before Mordred recognized the mingled apprehension and resentment in his eyes. The expression wrenched at his heart, for he knew that particular blend of feelings only too well – the constant fear of living in a world which united in condemnation against those born with magic, the ever present anger of having to witness your own people being subjected to a lifetime of injustice, regardless of whether they used their powers to cause any harm. • 17. Short Story: Merlin "Well then." Arthur crossed his arms and began a slow pace around Merlin, giving the man a wide berth and getting back to the facts as he knew them. "I recognize it as the very same weapon my father used against the Black Knight––there's no mistaking it, and I'm positive you wielded it against the Immortal Army. I can only guess that magic veiled its true nature from us back then. It looked like a common sword to me, not the one my father had used." He saw a shadow of guilt cloud Merlin's eyes and felt being closer to hitting the mark. "I could be mistaken about this next part, but I don't think I am. Arthur took a hesitant step back as Merlin incanted a spell and a fiery dragon emerged from the flames, flapping its wings in a skyward spiral before dissolving into embers to drift silently to the floor. "All I've ever used it for was to protect you, your kingdom, our friends, and the innocent. Magic can be used for good, too." Instinctually, Arthur's sword hand twitched with the thought to run him through, but instead his lips pressed hard together and his eyes glazed with bitter water. From the moment he touched Excalibur, all of those gnawing questions he chose to ignore since Merlin stumbled into his life began to piece together bit by bit yet only led to even more questions that he could not grasp hold of completely. Merlin was Emrys somehow, a not–so–doddery old sorcerer after all, but a young warlock with unimaginable power. And Balinor. Now Arthur understood Merlin's heartbreak over the death of a stranger. Balinor had died in his son's arms and Arthur's final words about no man's death being worth another man's tears had probably skewed Merlin's heart as much as it did his now. How wrong Arthur had been, for he'd shed tears over his own father's passing when Merlin had forced out a weak jest to cover up his loss. Never had he expected this. A brief review of Merlin's management of the Blackpool Tower will be highlighted, and then using economic tools of analysis, it will clarify the concept of pricing discrimination and how companies use prices to attract certain kinds of customer. Followed by, the use of price and attendance data from other attractions, such as Camelot and Alton Towers to support the argument. Finally the essay will come to a conclusion. `Merlin Entertainment in 2010 took over the management of Blackpool Tower, one of the U.K.'s more iconic tourist attractions. This should also bring supplementary visitor spending of £36 million and create up to new 1,000 jobs (The Times of London, 2010). Placing these figures in a demand curve will show a dramatic change (See Figure 3, Appendix 1) It is recommended a bit of both first and third pricing discrimination for Merlin. It is recommended that prices be raised, overall, as the service offering is improved. Recommending discounts for family groups, senior citizens, the disabled, and college students. Under prior management, entrance to the tower was priced at £17 for adults, £14 for seniors and children payable at the door, with a £3 discount for those booking online. For this, customers gained access to all facilities, as well as admission to the circus show. Merlin has the monopoly of the market therefore having market share in the entertainment sector put Merlin in advantage. By recommending, as averred above, a very aggressive price discrimination strategy for Merlin's as part of its pricing strategy for this project, and as a means to differentiate the theme park's offerings from those of rivals, Camelot and Alton Towers. But this will be accompanied by other marketing changes. Rival Camelot currently charges £24 for adults' entry to its theme park, the same price for children over a meter tall, and £15 for senior citizens. • 38. Merlin's Character In The Legend Of Geoffrey Merlin And... Merlin is considered one of the most strongest sorcerer that lives Camelot. He is Arthur's adviser, as well as a prophet and sorcerer. Merlin's powers were so powerful that other wizards and sorcerers looked up to him as a leader. His role in the Arthurian legend is to protect and serve the lands of Camelot. The Life of Merlin gave him the qualities of an humble man, who took pleasure in loneliness. The source provided descriptive details of Merlin's actions and how they affected others in relations to his selfishness. In the narrative, Monmouth wrote Merlin to be a man who wanted nothing to do with anyone, except for himself. After the 1900's, author of The Daughter of Merlin took a different perspective and gave the character a child that shared the same qualities. Gaster gave new meaning to Merlin's character that will be put in texts of the Arthurian Legend. In the narratives, The Life of Merlin by Geoffrey Monmouth and The Daughter of Merlin by Madison J Cawein, Merlin's character changes as different authors rewrite his character. He changes from a sorcerer living on his own to a sorcerer who has a daughter with his same abilities, because over a certain time period the authors wanted to evolve Merlin into more caring, passionate character. For example, Monmouth provides Merlin's character with the sense of self–serving attitude. The author incorporates a battle, which Merlin's leads and succeeds with the victory of the battle. The few times when he sat in the car and watched Merlin steer their way across the countryside along the roads it felt unsatisfying to him. The world passed by the windows too fast for Arthur to take in his new surroundings. He needed to feel the elements around him, like the sun on his face or the wind blowing into his hair as it did today. Here in the wide open air it smelled like humid soil, grass and flowers. That was far better to him then the confined feel and the awful smell of the car. Not to mention that he still did not trust the machine. It had the power to kill as far as he was concerned, and it put the fear in him. For some reason he could not get passed the image of how close he came losing Gwaine to one... The way Camelot got snapped away from him in a blip of time made him feel as if part of his heart was ripped out. For his entire life he had known nothing else than it. He fought for his people and protected it with every fibre of his being. Oh, no, he wasn't talking about his manservant position – although honestly it would be nice to get a raise in that area as well. It was Merlin's unofficial responsibilities that were definitely not being compensated enough. See, many many years ago (about five actually), a giant chained up dragon had told Merlin it was his destiny to protect some arrogant, pratty prince from all the evils in the world. 'There's a prophecy', the dragon had said. 'He's the Once and Future King, Merlin', 'He'll bring back magic, Merlin'. Merlin whispered treacherously, never mind the fact that deer don't maul, and if this one did, Merlin would probably actually charge in and rescue his friend. A couple yards ahead, Arthur's shoulders rose. He didn't hear that, did he? Merlin wondered, then shrugged to himself. So what? It was nothing he wouldn't say to the man's face. Now having nothing to do but stand, Merlin's attention wandered from Arthur's advancing back. His mind went to Camelot, and he began to wonder what Gauis would cook for supper, and just what Gwen (er, Queen Guinevere) was doing back at the castle. Something twinged in his chest, and he realized he missed Gwen. Yes, he saw her every morning when he fetched the King and Queen their breakfast, and he often spotted her and smiled at her as he ran through the halls on a errard for Gauis or Arthur. Arthurian literature is one area of fiction that has always been popular for writers to recreate in new versions, and one of the most intriguing characters of all Arthurian literature is Merlin, the magician/ prophet who aids Arthur early in his reign. Here we first meet the character Merlinus ("Merdinus," a more exact Latinization of the original Welsh, was impractical because of its similarity to the Latin or French word for excrement, surely an inappropriate name for a great hero). In his tale, Geoffrey uses not the Latin word "magus," which would imply that Merlin was some sort of sorcerer, but rather the word "vates," commonly indicating a poet or, often, a prophet or seer. (Tatlock) Merlin does exhibit many features of a mystic in Geoffrey's Historia: he uses clairvoyance in the familiar case, borrowed from Nennius, of Vortigern's vanishing tower; he foretells Vortigern's death and prophesies to Aurelius and Uther of Arthur's coming reign, also making several predictions about political events occuring just prior to the publication of the Historia; and he interprets to Uther Pendragon a portent of the death of the king Aurelius Ambrosius. (Bruce) Clairvoyance, prophecy, and the interpretation of dreams are all rather shamanistic actions that would fit Merlin's Welsh character as a druid. Myths communicate everything from what is ethically right to lessons and morals that prevent regrettable mistakes. Through the film seen from Merlin's perspective, it will be evident that such complex myths can, when broken down, teach such important lessons and morals. Did Merlin really exist, and if so, was he the dark magical wizard of legend or an image conjured up by superstitious townsfolk to explain occurrences they didn't understand? To answer this question, one should first look at the actual accomplishments of the figure Merlin. When was the character introduced and what did he do afterwards? What kinds of feats did this person accomplish to make him as well known as he is? Secondly, Merlin was well known as a mythical figure. As a magician, Merlin performed feats such as the moving of Stonehenge, the disguising of Uther Pendragon, and the crowning of King Arthur by the use of the sword in the stone (Fletcher 25). As a prophet, Merlin told of the defeat of the Saxons, the death of Arthur, and the one who found the Holy Grail. Almost everyone knows the story The Sword in the Stone by T.H. White wherein Merlin instructed Arthur in his life as king, but what most don't know is that Merlin was, in legend, the son of a devil. An incubus came and bedded with Merlin's mother so that she would bear his child (Ackerman 168). One story that shows the significance of this union is Geoffrey of Monmouth's Historia regum Britannae. In this book there is a section that tells the tale of Vortigern and Ambrosius. Vortigern, the King of Britain at the time, wants to build a new retreat, but every night the foundation is destroyed. Vortigern's wise men tell him he must sprinkle the spot with the blood of a child born fatherless. After a long and tedious search, Ambrosius is found and brought before Vortigern. • 88. Supernatural Elements : Supernatural Elements In Arthurian... Supernatural Elements in Arthurian Literature A recurring theme that can be found throughout Arthurian literature is the mention of magic, mythical creatures, and other supernatural elements. Two texts that showcase this are "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight" and "Prose Merlin". In "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight", the Green Knight's supernatural ability is used in order to provide Gawain the adventure he needs in order to prove himself to the other knights. In the eighth section in part one, the author describes the Green Knight as a "creature", immediately implying to the readers that the Green Knight isn't entirely human and of a different world. This is further confirmed when Gawain, the only knight to take the Green Knight up on his offer, accepts the challenge of cutting off the Green Knight's head. After the Green Knight is decapitated, his body proceeds to pick up the disembodied ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 92. Comparing The Legend Of King Arthur And Merlin The legend of King Arthur has inspired, and continues to inspire, many retellings of the well known stories and cast of characters. Ranging from film to literature to art, these retellings often include depictions of two key characters in the legend: King Arthur and and the wizard Merlin. Disney's The Sword and the Stone (1963) and the British Broadcasting Corporation program Merlin (2008–2012) both showcase the relationship between Merlin and Arthur in the development of Arthur, but they differ in approach; in the animated version, Merlin assumes the role of a mentor while the television program depicts Merlin as a friend to Arthur. In Disney's The Sword and the Stone, Merlin fulfills the role of the mentor as described by the hero's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This shows the value of many teachers in the development of Arthur because Arthur is taught by Archimedes basic and necessary skills which Arthur would use in his kingship, while Merlin teaches Arthur the importance of values and moral standards. This also shows that different teachers can impart equally relevant, but different wisdom. It mirrors society's knowing of 'human–ess' because it show that the society believes one person does not know everything, and that a well–rounded individual needs many teachers to know the finer points of specific topics. In contrast, in the television program Merlin, Merlin takes on the role as a friend to help Arthur develop as a king. Immediately, the viewers know Merlin is not afraid to be direct with Arthur, then the prince, when Merlin calls him a "prat" to his face. At first, this name calling is meant to be insultive, but as the series narrative progresses, Arthur and Merlin become friends so when Merlin calls Arthur a "prat" it is meant in a joking manner. This banter is most seen through the episode from the final season "The Death Song of Uther Pendragon." This episode serves as a small scale example of Merlin's role throughout the series as both a comical friend but still a valuable source of serious encouragement. In one scene, the comical banter between the two is readily apparent: Arthur: [as Merlin creeps closer to the village where a woman is screaming] What are you doing? Merlin: Well, ... Merlin squirmed for all he was worth, but Arthur grabbed both his arms in one of his and kept rubbing firmly on his head. Merlin wanted to bite the prince to make him let go, but figured that might be a step too far, especially in front of witnesses. He tried kicking instead, but Arthur had him in an awkward position. His face was jammed into Arthur's torso, so he couldn't even voice his protests. "See, he has much to learn about how civilized people conduct their affairs." Merlin turned his attention to the red, glitter–covered envelope. What would the Princess Morgana possibly have to send to him? Not caring that he was sitting on the cold tiles of the tiny bathroom, he ripped open the envelope. Shiny confetti fell out, silver snowflakes, evergreen trees, candy canes, and golden stars. Merlin pulled out a delicate piece of parchment. Inside a border of holly leaves and red berries, ornate writing proclaimed: "Her Royal Highness, the Princess Morgana Pendragon, cordially invites you to the annual Camelot Palace Youth Christmas Party. This year's party will be held Saturday, December 17, at 6:00 pm in the West Parlour. Formal dress required. Please RSVP to the palace steward by December 15." Merlin reread the invitation, bemused. How had he gotten invited to a party hosted by the princess? He had no business attending an event like that. He wouldn't know anybody except for Arthur, and he doubted the prince would want him to tag along. He'd probably pretend to not even know him, the scrawny little poor boy from nowhere who was still sharing a bed with his mum. Besides, Merlin had no formal clothes to wear. He really didn't think his worn out button–up shirt was going to cut it. Nor did he have any idea about how to interact with the kinds of hoity–toity people who were likely to be invited to such an event. At the time that Arthur called a halt to Gaius's execution, coolly postponing his father's judgement over Aredian's vehement protests, and then demanded another hearing in front of the king, Arthur's boldness had surprised her. Not that she had ever doubted his courage, but it was the first time she saw him openly oppose his father without any prompting from her. • 105. Merlin : A Hero What makes someone a hero? The qualities that a person has can make them a hero. In the movie Merlin, produced by Dyson Lovell, Merlin ishows that he is a hero. He stands goes against what is expected of him, he saves the life of his love in a unique way, and he stands up for what he believes in. Merlin is a unique type of hero, he doesn't follow the social norms, and who stands out among the rest. To be a hero one must be brave. To be brave means that one must be able to face fears, stand up for what one believes in, and that one will not give up no matter how difficult the task is. In the movie Merlin, Merlin proves his heroism by showing that he is brave. One of the ways that Merlin shows that he is brave is by standing up against Mab. Mab had created Merlin so that he could bring back the old ways, but he does not want to use his powers in this way. Merlin only wants to use his powers to destroy Mab. As Mab says "With evil all around me I can do nothing but evil to survive."(Merlin). This shows that Mab is evil. Merlin also shows that he is brave by saving Nimue. Vortigern had sacrificed Nimue to the dragons at Mabs request (Merlin). But Merlin uses his powers along with nature to save Nimue. Facing a dragon takes a lot a bravery. Another way that merlin shows that he is brave when he walks away from Nimue while in the doorway to magic (Merlin). He would never say the same of Merlin. While Tolkien drew much inspiration from Arthurian legend, especially Sir Thomas Malory's Le Morte Darthur, Gandalf and Merlin are very different characters. Merlin is a man, one whose role in much of Arthurian legend is as a loyal servant of the Kings of Camelot, willing to do anything to help them. He also rarely performs serious acts of magic. Gandalf, on the other hand, is a warrior mage, an immortal being sent to protect the people of Middle Earth.
