Reflection On Gender And Sexuality
Since October, I've been able to focus more on what I want to take from this class. I have enjoyed
learning and reviewing what sexuality is for other people and why it's important to me. This
semester has helped me figure out how much of what I have learned is opinion and how to separate
that from what I learned that is actually fact. More than I expected lies on a spectrum, like gender,
sexual orientation, and what kinks people are into. I also never anticipated that these things could be
changing or adjusting as people develop because, for me, how I identify hasn't changed much and
even when I learn about new kinks, I find them to be more interesting conceptually than intriguing
as a possible personal experience.
I always thought that learning about different experiences might change how I view things, but I am
now under the impression that I have been exposed to more in my life with open communication in
my family than most people in the class, gathering that only from who I could talk to more often: the
people in my small group. I learned a lot about what other people believe in, we all seemed to agree
that people are free in their gender and sexuality, but we could still see differently when things came
down to prolife/prochoice discussion. Even though we all saw eye–to–eye at times, there were
things that were solidified in our different cultures that we stood by, where discussion was skipped,
which is fine. It might have been more like talking than listening

The Importance Of Human Sexuality
Human sexuality is a complex and multi–layered subject affecting everyone on the planet. Opinions
on the matter are nearly as various and numerous as there are people. Questions regarding what is
healthy and what is not concerning human sexuality are still being ardently debated. Clinical
research into human sexuality offers much helpful information, but can be limited in its scope.
Philosophical and religious viewpoints can also provide valuable perspectives, but they, too, can be
narrow in their approach. Integrating various disciplines with one's own experience offers broader
exposure to information and, hopefully, with discernment, a healthier understanding of sexuality.
As a Christian, I believe sexuality is a gift from God. Sexuality, I believe, is meant to express
something rich, beautiful, and intimate in relationship with another person, and is meant to express
something of the nature of God. After all, God did create people in His image as relational and
sexual beings (Genesis 2). A healthy expression of sexuality, as Paris (2011) writes, "whether one is
sexually active or not...generates energy, creativity and beauty. It's a gift from God that we're invited
to receive and enjoy" (p. 12). Of course, with all the misinformation and abuse of sexuality in the
world today, finding a healthy expression the "gift" of sexuality seems easier said than done.
Unhealthy expressions of sexuality include attitudes that view sex as somehow dirty or sinful. The
attitude

Feminine Sexuality in The Storm
Kate Chopin's short story 'The Storm'; describes an encounter of infidelity between two lovers
during a brief thunderstorm. The story alludes to the controversial topic of women's sexuality and
passion, which during Chopin's time no one spoke about much less wrote about. So controversial
was 'The Storm,'; that it was not published until after her death in eighteen ninety–nine. The story is
broken up into five sections, each filled with small clues and hints that reflect her message. In short,
Kate Chopin's 'The Storm'; is about a confirmation of feminine sexuality and passion and a rejection
of the suppression of it by society.
The title of 'The Storm'; gives the reader a peek into the underlying meaning of the story. It

Her sexuality has been repressed by the constraints of her marriage and society's view of women,
represented by the housework being done before the storm hits. Chopin alludes to this theme of
suppression again as Alcee is invited into Calixta's home. The author writes, 'Come 'long in, M'sieur
Alcee. His voice and her own startled her as if from a trance, and she seized Bobinot's vest. Alcee,
mounting to the porch, grabbed the trousers and snatched Bibi's braided jacket that was about to be
carried away by a sudden gust of wind.'; Alcee grabs Bobinot's pants, symbolically subverting the
social and martial constraints that control Calixta.
Chopin presents many details of Calixta's affirmation of her sexuality and passion. As the storm's
intensity increases, it becomes necessary to put something underneath the door to keep the rain out.
''My! what a rain! It's good two years sence it rained it rain' like that,' exclaimed Calixta as she
rolled up a piece of bagging and Alcee helped her to thrust it beneath the crack.'; The sexual
connotation of 'thrusting it beneath the crack'; is evident, but it is important to notice that Calixta
initiates this sexual act, not Alcee. This is a far cry from an ordinary, repressed housewife. Quite the
contrary, Chopin actually

Cybersex: Human Sexuality
Cybersex promises to transform sexuality. Discuss. Human sexuality is an enormous part of a
human life and people are constantly faced with sexuality challenges. As the world evolves, ideas
and inventions are voiced and created to make life better for everyone and the internet is one of
these creations becoming an essential part of many lives all over the world. Cybersex is a growing
form of sexual expression over a computer where people get arousal through typed text, video,
images and spoken voice (Waskul : 2003). Because cybersex is so wholly person, yet so wholly
impersonal creates many interesting qualities in the phenomenon (Waskul: 2003). With the internet
rapidly becoming one of the most used tools in the world, it seems only an ... Show more content on

However for those individuals who don't use it as an escapism and purely to connect with the sexual
minorities it could potentially transform sexuality. There is now an application on the i–phone called
'grinder' in which a gay boy can sign up and it will search for all the other same orientated people
within a five kilometre radius of you. You can chat with someone and see if you like talking to them,
and if so, this progresses to meeting up in person if both parties are willing. It seems to be of great
advantage to those looking to connect with other like minded sexual beings. Cybersex is extremely
accessible, and anyone can sign on practically anywhere, anytime. It could be argued that this is a
brilliant innovation where bodies, sex and society are interrelated for the first time that it is
transforming people and their sexuality through its availability (Waskul:2003). One does no longer
have to wait to have sexual interaction by relying on someone else, it is all on your terms. If this is
just as exciting to someone having the absence on a real body, opposed to actually having one, then
it's hard to argue against there being a problem because you are causing no direct harm to anyone
else if you use cybersex safely. If an individual is confused about their sexuality, the internet is very
accessible

The Sexuality Of Female Sexuality
In modern societies, where all the former taboos on sex are abolished, one subject can still raise a
wave of debates. People of almost all religious views and social orders are ready to accept and be
tolerant to homosexual or bisexual people, but the issue over the female sexuality is still unsettled.
The question how it differs from the male sexuality and why exactly the attitude to female sexuality
is different compared to the male one is discussed by lots of psychologists, sociologists and
philosophers. However, there is no coherent and competent explanation yet. "Sexuality is messy,
passionate, unclear, tentative, anxiety–producing, liberating, frightening, embarrassing, consoling,
appetitive, and cerebral" (Schwartz, 1994, p. 8), ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She writes that "it is an established fact that the idea of female sexuality prevalent over the centuries
is not something given in nature, or biologically true, but is only a "cultural construction" (Kar,
2015, p. 24). Kar considers that by being culturally constructed, it absorbed lots of means to
disempower women, and the medical sciences together with literature is two most powerful tools of
this cultural absorption. Cultural oppression and suppression constitute this process. According to
Kar (2015), "within this system, female sexuality was believed to be essentially passive" (p. 24).
People believed this because they were taught that biologically female sexual organs were devoted
to serve only one function that is reproductive one. Sexual fulfillment was out of the question, a
luxury that women could not afford. Women were considered to be less sexually desirous compared
to men. They were obliged to seek fulfillment by following their "natural destiny", namely to be a
good wife and mother. This all formed the stereotype of ideal female sexuality that is close to
"neutral" because women should be modest, passive and even passionless. Such norm of sexual
behavior was deeply rooted in many cultures and societies around the globe. However, some people
were adherent to this norm, while others became the aberrant. Some women claimed that they had as
much of the right to speak about sex as men. At the same time, each society tried to calm those who

Male Sexuality : Female Sexuality
Female Sexuality
Female sexuality intertwines with Possessing the Secret of Joy by illustrating its power and those
who fear it.
History
In the early nineteenth century, heightened female sexuality was considered a disorder (Studd,
2006). Doctors and psychiatrist sought ways to prevent "masturbation and decrease libido". Issac
Baker Brown– a gynecological surgeon removed the clitoris of a women who sought to use the
Divorce Act of 1857 and leave her husbands as well as young women who read books and failed to
follow their mothers' rules. Women received operations to remove their clitoris preventing sexual
stimulation as a way of controlling their sexual desires. Applying of leeches to the vulva and the
anus also destroyed the outer portions of the vagina. In the medieval times, men were fearful of the
female sexuality and the madness they believed came along with heightened states of arousal
(Studd, 2006).
Current
Dr. Kimberly Russell says culture influences control women by saying women are less interested in
sex than men, and that women prefer monogamy. Women did not say that, but women believe it
(Cavanaugh, 2013). Creating an environment where women control their urges to be sexual with
more than one person, is called "slut shaming." This is an example of societal control over the libido
of women. As evidence of this theory, Russell used other species who mate with several different
mates to ensure procreation. More partners greater the chances for pregnancy. Women

Sexuality In Carmilla
In Carmilla, Sheridan Le Fanu uses vampires to identify and challenge gender roles of women in the
Victorian age. From the outset, Carmilla and Laura's relationship appears to transcend mere
homosocial characteristics; Carmilla awakens sensations in Laura which she has never known
before because her sexuality has always been suppressed. This suppression is inherently motived by
the dominant ideology in Victorian culture that lesbianism, and homosexuality more generally, are
"unnatural" forms of sexuality. According to Colleen Damman, "as a woman, Carmilla can only
claim her sexuality after death" (). This is an interesting statement because it provides context for
the idea that vampirism is the only way Carmilla can express her own carnal desires; She too is then
subject to the constraints of Victorian culture. This to say that, for Le Fanu, the only way to have an
open discussion concerning homosexual desire is to employ the vampire. Bearing this concept in
mind, by analyzing certain key passages and elements of Carmilla and by applying some modern
conceptualizations on gender and sexuality, one can see that Carmilla and Laura are merely
byproducts of a period rife with sexual desire, frustration, and tension.
In her essay titled "Compulsive Heterosexuality and Lesbian Existence," Adrienne Rich claims that
any alternative to heterosexual outcome is discouraged by society. The essay claims that Western
tradition has used the heterosexual family model as the basic social

The person that I interviewed was Roxanne Nowak. She is married to a thrower on our men's track
and field team. I was able to have a nice long phone call with her and learned a lot about how
sexuality influenced her position in the mental health field.
Roxanne works extremely hard and could not stop talking about how rewarding her job really is. As
a Licensed Professional Counselor, she deals with kids on a daily basis. She works for Northwest
Journey, which is a Day treatment facility that meets with families and kids that range from
Elementary to High School. The education program that they have is with the Stevens Point School

called PFLAG, which stands for Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays. Sexuality has
still influenced her position in many ways. There have been circumstances where some kids have
opened up about being gay. Along with that, other kids have opened up about being sexually active.
There also have been patients of hers that have been pregnant. Roxanne pointed out that the world is
becoming more accepting of these types of things and it is important that her patients know that they

Sexuality And Sexuality Among Older Adults
Human sexuality is a very broad and in some instance a very sensitive subject. Depending on the
audience, it is a topic that may cause uneasiness and awkwardness for some while for others it is a
topic of preference. Although sexuality is a significant part of our modern–day culture in movies,
videos, and other celebrity induced trends, it is still a subject that isn't easily discussed. Some will
assert that sexuality only involves the act of sex which is probably the reason there is a sense of
discomfort. This is in fact highly inaccurate, but it is used as a crutch to avoid discussing the topic
altogether. Sexuality is a reality that it plays an important role throughout our lives. It intertwines

As we grow into young adults, we move to a stage of sexual maturity. Sexual maturity is a time
where we can procreate, where there will be in our stamina, and an increase in sexual desires for
both men and women. This is something that happens for everyone after we have surpassed the
puberty stage. All of this is matters because sexual arousal is a physiological function. The
physiological aspect of this cartoon seems to be on the fence of positive and negative. The male
seems to be more in a state of shock by his wife's actions, watching her as she is standing there
holding the glasses of wine and the bottle and her verbiage (attempting to initiate intimacy but
reminding him of the backup plan). It doesn't necessarily convey a negative response from the
husband as if he is lacking interest, but he doesn't seem as enthused as his counterpart which could
have a lot to do with the physiological aspect of him. It is possible that his stamina has declined due
to his age or he could have possibly lost the ability to have sexual arousal for his elderly wife. The
physiological response of the husband's actions or lack thereof can have a domino effect on the
psychological dimension of this couple's relationship. As stated earlier, the husband is necessarily
displaying a positive response to his wife's actions. He is just sitting there with a stunned face which
can in return, make the wife feel negatively.

Sexuality As A Social Experience
Introduction Sexuality, it refers to "aspects of the body and desire that are linked to the erotic."
(Macionis and Plummer, 2012) For many societies, sex or sexuality has long been seen as a taboo.
They think that talking or discussing sexuality is an ignominious thing. Under this atmosphere, the
societies will recognize sexuality as a private matter, which cannot openly discuss and even mention
in the public area. However, is sexuality as a "real" private matter? Many people think that sexuality
as a natural personal issue of life. However, all the participants of a society are learning what sexual
behaviors are acceptable by the society through a process which called 'socialization'. What is
socialization? Socialization is a lifelong social experience by which individuals construct their
personal biography, assemble daily interactional rules and come to terms with the wider patterns of
their culture. (Macionis and Plummer, 2012) Through this process, people will learn the distinction
of 'good sex' and 'bad sex'. If our sexuality is shaped by socialization, that means the society affects
our sexuality. Thus, sexuality may not as a private matter. Sexuality maybe as a public matter,
because our society regulations. Regulations can understand as a censorship by the society or
government, which related with the politics. Our society seems very free and liberal, but in fact, it is
not liberal, censorships and regulations are ubiquitous, it exists in every corner of our

Sexuality Project Taylor Tarpey Sociology 345 30 July 2012 In today's society, we as men and
women are burdened with a double standard of how one's sex life is supposed to go. We hear from
our friends and family, from churches and neighbors, that sex is something you do with the person
you love and trust, someone who you are going to share the rest of your life with. Sex comes with
marriage, and with marriage comes a promise that you will remain with this one person "'til death do

marriage. We develop attractions to the people we see in school or in the workplace, and we date

Sexuality Definition Essay
Sexuality has always been an issue and something that is misunderstood as well as having a lot of
moral debate. There are many ways that we can define sex and sexuality. But when it comes to
having sexual freedom, it can be seen as being the ability to express and develop our sexuality
without society or the government interfering, and can also be seen as a fundamental right. Our
sexuality is important because it includes several things that help make us who we are. Sexuality is
usually shaped by factors such as history, our culture, education, and our values. There's no doubt
about it that there are substantial shifts in attitudes towards sex within each generation. Today's

Our values and religious beliefs have a lot to do with that. Most of the time parents are in the
position where they pass on certain values to their children. Those values or beliefs might change
throughout time or they might remain the same. My parents have always been positive in terms of
what they regard as being appropriate behavior, without having to make me or my siblings feel
guilty for expressing or questioning a point of view that's different than theirs. They don't
necessarily force us to act a certain way, but they do give their opinion and advise us to be ourselves
and be able to express ourselves physically and emotionally, but also in a respectful manner. For
example, showing affection towards your significant other while out in public. This is not an issue
with them because a lot of couples kiss in public and they have done it before as well, but they
wouldn't like for us to show that type of affection to the point where other people around us would
feel uncomfortable. Although I have more sexual freedom than my parents, I can also be
conservative at times. I will only show any type of sexuality if I'm feeling comfortable and that's just
my choice and it's also a form of

Sexuality, Sexuality And Sexual Orientation
Kiara Rivas
Sociology 1
Due Date: 5/5/15
Human Sexuality Sexuality is something that seems to dominate a lot of the world we live in. It's in
our schools, at work, and especially in the mass media. The way your body develops and the way
you feel and respond to others sexually creates your sexuality ("Sexuality and Sexual Orientation",
Youthoria). It can shape and affect people's lives as well as our own. Sexuality can be influenced by
culture, religion, media, friends and experiences. Some people are very sexual, while others
experience no sexual attraction at all. Sexuality has always been treated as taboo and some people
are uncomfortable talking about it so they avoid it. For this reason sexuality can produce confusion,
anxiety and fear. Sexuality includes much more than just sex. It includes anatomy, biological sex,
gender, sexual orientation, relationships, and sexual behaviors ("Sex and Sexuality", Planned
Parenthood). Applying the sociological approaches will give us a better understanding of human
sexuality.
Now that we have some insight on what sexuality is, we can apply the sociological perspectives.
Starting with the structural functional theory, this theory argues that society consists of interrelated
parts that work together to promote social order, unity, and balance. The structural–functional
paradigm can be broken down by other type on functions: manifest functions, latent functions, and
dysfunctions. The manifest functions regulates with whom your

Sexuality In The Media
In modern days, the mass media have been shown to affect a broad range of health–related attitudes
and behaviours including violence, alcohol and drug use. However, there is growing concern about
people, especially those in young age's exposure to sexual content through electronic media such as
TV shows, movies and music about its potential effects on their sexual attitudes, beliefs, and
behaviours. These media have been sources of such inappropriate contents such as sex, drugs and
violence to most of adolescents as they are exposed to many sexual images and messages.
Although sexual content in the media have been affecting any age group, adolescents have been the
most vulnerable ones. This is because they are exposed to sexual content in the media ... Show more

Since teenagers in their developing stage and not fully grown up yet most of them are just
discovering their sexuality. Also, it is definitely normal to be interested in everything sexual for
them. However, the amount of sex from the media in modern society has been increasing and can
make teenagers confused. With widespread access to the internet, there are often numerous teens
who accidently or intentionally be exposed to a lot of pages of materials that are uncensored, often
inaccurate and potentially harmful. This can eventually lead young people to irresponsible sexual
behaviour and unwanted pregnancies.
Sexuality in the media does not only have negative effects but also can provide positive impacts on
people in society especially those in a growing stage. Whether by television, searches in internet or
other social networking, adolescents can learn about their sexual health and what they should do
later in their life as the media informs relationships, pregnancy, birth control and sexually

Infidelity was considered a sin. In addition, infidelity does not always end up in breaking up of the

Sexuality In The Media
During this semester, I've shaped my understanding of sex and sexuality through readings and
discussions presented in class. Moreover, I've notice how the media is the major influence on our
development as humans nowadays and that things are being expressed and experienced at younger
ages, than ever before. Children and teenagers are discovering their sexuality at early ages. Thanks
to the freedom that social media offer them; they have better access to express their personal identity
rather than to limit themselves to their biological sex and society's role expectations. Also, I think
that the media has been a helpful tool to change society's narrow point of view over gender roles,
gender identity and sex. Today people feel comfortable to talk about their sexual orientation and sex
in public. Homosexuality, transgender people and sex are not a taboo anymore and have become

entertainment. Many of the series and movies we see today show teenagers getting drunk, high and
having sex with different partners. The media give us this careless and superficial idea of sex. I
remember in high school I used to listen to girls talking about their first sexual experience and why

A History of Sexuality Essay
Unlike sex, the history of sexuality is dependant upon society and limited by its language in order to
be defined and understood. In his paper which is called Is There A History of Sexuality, Halperin
drew a distinction between the topics of sexuality and of sex. He claimed that the two concepts are
separate ideas. In Halperin's view, sex is a natural function that has not changed in many years, if
ever at all. He says that sex "is a natural fact, grounded in the functioning of the body, and as such, it
lies outside of history and culture" (Halperin 416). This means that sex cannot be measured in
historical thought, for it has not changed since the beginning of time. As a natural function, it will
continue to exist without the influence ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to Halperin, "the 'sexuality' of the classical Athenians...was constituted by the very
principles on which Athenian public life was organized" (Halperin 419). By this he is referring to
the fact that sexuality in the Ancient Athens society was socially constructed, but not in the way that
it is understood to be socially constructed in modern thought. The so–called sexuality of the Ancient
Greek peoples in Athens was directly related to how the society worked, how it was built and how it
was understood. Halperin provides a quote from a French anthropologist who is named Maurice
Godelier in order to make this point more apparent. This quote states that "it is not sexuality which
haunts society, but society which haunts the body's sexuality" (Halperin 419). This statement re–
emphasizes the fact that sexuality is a socially constructed concept, entirely dependant upon the
society in which it is created in order to be best understood. The history of sexuality, therefore, is a
brief history in the sense that the idea of sexuality is constantly being rethought and changed.
Halperin sums up the concept of sexuality very well when he says that "[it]...is not a cause but an
effect" (Halperin). The paper written by Kennedy and Davis, which was called The Reproduction of
Butch–Fem Roles: A Social Constructionist Approach, provides further evidence that the history of
sexuality is young and

Just as other interpersonal themes, sexual themes in film are often depictions of sexual themes that
exist in real life relationships. For this very reason, it is very easy for a person to compare his
relationships with that of a relationship shown in media or film. Some relationships are total train
wrecks from the start while others are not necessarily ideal, but healthy. Although not seen very
often, ideal couples in film are attributed with characteristics that are seen by society as desirable;
youthful, attractive people who are hyper–sexual and affectionate. As cliché as it sounds, sometimes
relationships are simply "complicated". Such is the case in the film It's Complicated.

When Jane and Jake meet up to attend their son's graduation, the two begin to have an affair. At the
same time, she begins to fall in love with another man that she is seeing. Not knowing what she
wants, Jane must decide whether she wants to rekindle her relationship with her ex or move on to
the newer man in her life.
There are a few human sexuality themes that I noticed in this film. The first and most obvious theme
that I noticed is how the film goes against the stereotypes that media places of sexuality and age. At
often times, younger people are seen to have vibrant sexual relationship. The thing that I can admire
about this film is that it shows sex between older people. Most people have misconceptions that
when people achieve a certain age, they no longer have sex. This stereotype is not true. People who
are in their 50's and up can still have very healthy active sex lives. This stereotype was something
that the characters in the film seemed to struggle with. Both Jane and Jake were trying to fight the
aging to seem more physically attractive. For example, Jane considered getting a facelift to compete
with her ex's young wife. Jane also seemed to be very influenced by her friend's ideas on love and
sex; their perspective seemed to alter her perspective. In the beginning, she was very conflicted in
expressing her sexuality. She dealt with this struggle by succumbing to what they believed she
needed to do in her own sex life.
The second theme that I recognized

To start things off I will be talking about the history of marriage and casual sex in the US during this

when it came to human sexuality, he was one of the first to openly express and talk about sexuality
in the US, during a time that sex was taboo and a topic with false information. The Kinsey Reports

It wasn't until the 1990's that sexual activity peaked for both sexes and started to decline for both
men and women, however more for men (McAnulty & Burnette, 104). As time progressed, the
median age at which women had sex for the first time decreased from 19 in the 1960's to 17 in the

With casual sex becoming more socially acceptable in the US, we see the effect it has on marriage

that the median age for first time marriage rose from 22.8 to 26.8 years for men and 20.3 to 25.1

cohabitation, something that was seen a lot less than today. Since the 1970's, cohabitation has risen 6

Throughout the course, Religion and Sexuality, I have gained new insights on religion and its
relationship to sexuality, further, I have learned skills on how to approach people about such topics
(religion and sexuality) and how to critically evaluate these subjects efficiently. Lastly, this course
has enabled me to discover new qualities about myself.
Upon entering this course, my understanding of human sexuality was decent; I was aware of certain
aspects of sexuality such as being straight, gay, lesbian, queer, transgender, etc. Nevertheless, I did
not realize how expansive sexuality is; it never occurred to me that sexual health, prostitution,
marriage, rape, sex trafficking, divorce, families, etc., all fell under the umbrella of human sexuality.
Books and essays such as Renee Hill's Walk Together and David Shneer's "Out of School"
showcased the multiple facets of human sexuality and how terms like queer are not directly related
to homosexuality. While sexuality and homosexuality are linked, frequently, people mistake them as
being synonymous; before entering this class, I was searching for a definition of sexuality, and often
in the thesaurus section of dictionary websites homosexuality and or sexual orientation was
considered a synonym of sexuality. Formerly, I too would have agreed they were the same, however,
after taking this course, I concluded that homosexuality is just one topic in the broad discussion of
sexuality. My understanding of sexuality now is that it

Sexuality In Dracula
Don't Deny Yourself
Andy Feng
Dracula by Bram Stoker is a horror story about a hero's quest to rid the world of vampires from the
Victorian era. Readers are horrified by his graphic descriptions and horrifying struggles. However,
Dracula is much more than just a vampire fantasy; in this novel, Bram Stoker explores the
unconscious sexual desires repressed during the Victorian era and the controversy surrounding
sexuality.
Jonathan is exposed to his unconscious sexual feelings during his meeting with the three vampire
women. Upon the three vampire women's entrance, Jonathan is immediately entranced and develops
a longing for them. Jonathan notices that "All three had brilliant white teeth, that shone like pearls
against the ruby of their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The girl went on her knees, and bent over me, simply gloating. There was a deliberate
voluptuousness which was both thrilling and repulsive, and as she arched her neck she actually
licked her lips like an animal, till I could see in the moonlight the moisture shining on the scarlet lips
and on the red tongue as it lapped the white sharp teeth. I closed my eyes in languorous ecstasy and
waited, waited with beating heart."(25). Jonathan makes an ultimate attempt to remain chaste
himself, yet his unconscious desires are so great he is able to penetrate through his defense, in this
case his eyelashes. By using the word "afraid" he shows that he is no longer in control. Also, by
comparing the vampire women to animals, Jonathan is alluding that the women and his desires for
them are raw, wild, and uncensored. "Ecstasy" demonstrates Jonathan's inability to control himself,
almost as if he is dreaming. He waits in hope that the women will have sex with him. Jonathan is
completely dominated by his previously unconscious desires for sex, and simply anticipates the
three vampire women's next move. Jonathan's desire for sex is finally realized as he meets he three
sexual vampire women.

Beauvoir Sexuality
Simone de Beauvoir believes that biology doesn't make a person, a person and their experiences
make them who they are. "It is not nature that defines woman; it is she who defines herself by
dealing with nature on her own account in her emotional life" (Beauvior). He describes
psychoanalytics as a perspective that can be compared to the way Christianity or Marxism is looked
at. In the sense that psychoanalysis use some words extremely literally, while these same words can
also symbolizes other meanings. Some psychoanalysts say that their worst enemy is other
psychoanalysts themselves. Freud didn't think much about women in his work about sexuality. He
used the same model for men with some slight modifications. Freud did say that women's sexuality
is as evolved as men's, but he doesn't go into detail about women's pleasure. Whereas Maranon says

Some little boys feel pride in their penis and others feel indifference or disgust, this has nothing to
do with how a girl feels. It does not correspond with a little girl's humiliation. The Electra complex
has many things looked over, like the fact that clitoral pleasure and a number of other erogenous
parts come about near puberty. It's wrong to believe that a young girl receiving kisses from her
father is gaining any sexual pleasure from this act. Adler thinks that sexuality should be looked at
with personality. He thought Freud was too focused on desire, and thought man was more than that.
He believes that inferiority complexes come from whole situations, so not that a girl doesn't have a
penis, but that she cant enjoy the privileges that come along with having a penis. The problem with
psychoanalysis is that it fails to give an explanation of origin. Beauvior uses the example of incest to
get his point across. "Incest is forbidden because the father has forbidden it.– but why did he forbid
it?" This is the question that psychoanalysis fails to

Sexuality in John Steinbeck's The Chrysanthemums Essay
Sexuality in Steinbeck's The Chrysanthemums
Reading over this excellent story once more, I am again filled with
the same emotion (if it can be called that) that I experienced when first
reading it. Steinbeck planned for that. In a letter to George Albee in
1933, Steinbeck comments on this story and his interest in Albee's opinion
of it. "...It is entirely different and is designed to strike without the
reader's knowledge. I mean he reads it casually and after it is finished
feels that something profound has happened to him although he does not know
what nor how." I knew after reading this, that Steinbeck is truly a marvel.

He doesn't quite catch
onto the eroticism of the story, and in stead, chooses to focus on the more
crude innuendoes. "...The chrysanthemum stalks seem to be phallic symbols,
and Eliza's "over–eager" snipping of them suggests castration. Then in the
"rooting" bed, Eliza herself becomes masculine, inserting the "little crisp
shoots" into open, receptive furrows" (Hughes 235). He goes on explaining
how the shoots became Eliza's children and how she communicates with the
tinker on how to care for them. This makes perfect sense, but Eliza seems
more concerned with the loss of her own life. For too long, the
chrysanthemums have served in place of children. She is looking into
reclaiming her own life, not finding another electric connection to live
her life through. Hughes seems to ignore this, because all women by nature
want to procreate and have children, right? The androgyny of Eliza's
character, however, would suggest otherwise. She isn't as pulled by that
biological need as Hughes would suggest.
Elizabeth E. McMahan is strong in saying that although people will
agree that "The Chrysanthemums" is a story of a woman's frustration, no one
can adequately explain why. McMahan attributes the frustration to her
unhappiness with her marriage. She explains that although she and Henry
have a relationship of "mutual respect," he has no gift

Women 's Sexuality And Sexuality
Women's sexuality has been anything but stagnant, especially within the last 150 years. The very
idea of a woman being a "sexual being" is relatively modern. For centuries, women have been
confined to restrictive behaviors until the rise of the sexual revolution in the 1960's. This movement
gave way to new ideas and attitudes not only about a woman's role in society but also about their
sexual identities. For the first time, women were able to freely act out their desires and seek their
own personal pleasures. Often, the freedom to have more than one partner was the central idea of
liberation for women's sexuality. Casual sex, which for men has always been a staple of their being,
was now applicable to women challenging the idea that having multiple, non–committed sexual
experiences was only natural and satisfactory to men. Professor Anne Campbell from Durham
University in the United Kingdom conducted a study to find out if women, in fact, do enjoy having
casual sex just as much as men do. It is not clear who actually funded the research but it can be
inferred that administration of funding passed through Durham University. Her theory, "If women
have adapted, then although they may take part in casual sex less often than men because of their
stricter criteria when selecting partners, they should rate the experience positively" (Campbell,
2008) was tested by surveying a total of 1,743 men and women after they had a one night stand.

HUMAN SEXUALITY ReNata Shaw APUS: Human Sexuality Assignment 2 Resubmit Dr. Foster
November 29, 2015 Human Sexuality Introduction Sexuality encompasses aspects in a person's life
that involves sex and gender identity, sexual orientation and sexual behavior. It encompasses the
physical, social and psychological aspects of a person's sexual behavior. It underpins what an
individual is, affects the individual's life wholesomely and is unique to each and every individual. A
general stereotype of sexuality in old people exists in the society. Most people tend to believe that
sexuality diminishes with age and that old people are not supposed to be sexually active beings. It is
a reality however that most old people engage in sexual activities and have sexual needs even late
into their lives (Connaughton & McCabe, 2015). Beliefs on sexuality in old people have greatly
influenced negatively the way old people express their sexuality. The cartoon depicts an old couple
possibly in one of their routine appointments with their family doctor. The couple despite the
doctor's attempt to engage them in a conversation regarding their sexual health is reluctant to discuss
it with their doctor. A reaction such as the one associated with this couple can be as a result of the
negative way in which the society views sexuality in the elderly. The result of such negativity is
depicted by the way the couple seems irritated by the doctor's line of discussion.

Reflection On Human Sexuality
This class was, potentially, the most enlightening out of any of our classes this semester. I tend to
think about myself as incredibly open–minded and well–rounded when it comes to understanding
the different aspects of human sexuality, but this class showed me how little I truly know. Listening
to this class's guest speakers illuminated me to the depth of the BDSM community that I had
previously been blind to. While I had known some about BDSM from simply a
fetish/paraphilia/technical standpoint, I wasn't aware that it also denoted such a rich community. I
suppose that I could have expected that BDSM would have it's own community, but, since it is
outside of my realm of sexuality, I was simplistic in the way that I understood BDSM as only a
fetish. My simplistic thinking is made worse when I consider the fact that one of my closest friends
was a professional submissive for a few years prior to coming to Reno, but I never asked many
questions because I felt that it would be too personal or would show potential holes in my
knowledge. This is why I am so glad that we had guest speakers for this topic in class. When I was
reading this chapter in the Lehmiller book, I found it to be informative on a baseline knowledge
level, but it definitely lost a lot of the depth and complexity of the fetishes and paraphilia
themselves, and particularly the people that practice these aspects of sexuality. Having a guest
speaker come in allows for the other students, as well as myself, to

Julie, and Alice was Julie's idea during a conversation she has with her mother. This seems to
indicate that she has an attraction or curiosity towards both men and women. Alice agreed to be a
part of the threesome and then later engages in a relationship of sorts with another man. This seems
to indicate that Alice also has an attraction or curiosity towards both men and women. The fact that
Julie was eventually unhappy with the threesome perhaps

Kinsey On Sexuality
EARLY RESEARCH ON SEXUALITY
Sexuality is a central aspect of being human, and an essential feature of life – impacting the general
well–being and overall quality of life. It is also vital for understanding and defining the concept of
sexual health. Although sex and sexuality have been the topics of interest of many artists, writers,
painters and musicians throughout human history, scientific research on human sexuality did not
begin until 19th century. The commencement of the modern era of sex research was marked by
Alfred Kinsey, an American biologist, who published two statistics–packed volumes on human
sexuality, Sexual Behaviour in the Human Male and Sexual Behaviour in the Human Female. These

The early 1990s saw the emergence of studies examining the relationship between job demands
reported by one partner, usually a working man, and the satisfaction of their spouse, usually a stay–
at–home woman. Poor psychological well–being and marital dissatisfaction were associated with
partner's high levels of work stressors (Jones 1993 a; Jones et al. 1993 b; Jones & Fletcher 1996). A
person's overall levels of happiness can be affected by their satisfaction with their marriage or
intimate relationship, and this in turn is often heavily influenced by levels of sexual satisfaction. The
notion that marital and sexual satisfaction are related was confirmed in a study investigating the
relationship between stress and sexual relationships (Morokoff & Gillilland 1993), and sexual
expression (high levels of sexual activity and a satisfied sexuality expressed by both partners) has
been indicated one of three factors predicting relationship satisfaction (Sprecher et al.

Female Sexuality : Male Sexuality
Female Sexuality Female sexuality has been a controversial subject that plays a crucial role in our
everyday lives. There is a constant double standard women face. In terms of sexuality both males
and females are more similar than society deems them. It begins with parents; they have a great
impact on how their daughters view sex and their own sexuality. Also female sexuality is considered
taboo when they become mothers. There is a never ending battle of hypocrisy that women face when
it comes to sexuality. These problems are influenced by gender roles, socialization, and even
religion. It is considered a conquest for men to have many sexual encounters. We as women are
considered sexual objects but are expected to be virtuous. When a woman is open about her sexual
desires and needs, she is condemned or depicted as a slut. A woman withholding sex is considered a
prude. These common clichés that women face are degrading and allows us to see how flawed the
system is. Parent's sexual beliefs impact their children's sexuality and view on sex, they learn from
what they see and are told. What they learn remains with them. When a female becomes a mother,
her lifestyle usually changes. Society doesn't seem to accept mothers being sexualized. Basically
when you become a mother you shouldn't be sexual. Daughters grow up knowing her mother wasn't
a sexual person because she is a mom. This follows the daughter, when she becomes a mother the
pattern will most likely repeat itself.

Sexuality In The Victorian Era
The history of female sexuality is complicated, marked and continuously derailed by a patriarchal
system that suppressed studies into its origins and societal norms that prevented a healthy expression
of natural sexual feelings. The Victorian Era in particular was guilty of many standards that
influenced the ability of women to express themselves in a sexual manner; assumptions about
female passionlessness, which was upheld as the norm for the time, led to complete standstills on
studies involving female sexuality. Sex scientists were actively persecuted and their work destroyed
if it contradicted the generally accepted Victorian Era guidelines surrounding sex: it was meant to be
a reproductive act, not a sought–after expression of love and desire. Many women who had orgasms
or received sexual pleasure were sent to asylums, where their sexuality was treated like a mental
illness and the women were labeled as hysterics. Since female sexual pleasure was criminalized and

The era's sexologists, many of whom focused on sexuality outside of the heterosexual and male–
oriented norms of their societies, were unfortunately prevented from speaking out, but that failed to

revolutionary facility in Berlin was destroyed by the Nazis, alongside "20,000 volumes, 35,000
photographs, 40,000 confessionals and biographical letters, and many unique objects..." (Matte,

Unfortunately, setbacks such as these were common, with many governments limiting their citizens
in their studies and denouncing their work. The individual states, all those that repressed their
scientists from conducting research, are therefore guilty for the lack of information that is currently

History of Sexuality by Michael Foucault is a project in dissolution of the notion that Western
society has experienced a repression of sexuality since the seventeenth century. Furthermore, he
contends with the notion that sexuality has not been the subject of public discourse. The goal of this
paper is an effort to expound, through Foucault understandings, that modern society has employed
the mechanisms essential for engendering true discourses regarding sex. Foucault advances three

He asserts that the desire to address the repressed nature of sex participated in the very organization
that it was seeking to decipher (Bristow, 1997). Foucault contends further by suggesting that it is
uncharacteristic to modern societies not to relegate sex to a sinister existence but to address it
ceaselessly while at the same time exploiting it as the secret. Foucault expresses that rather than a
puritanism of language or a unvarying concern to conceal sex, what marks those three centuries
(17th – 19th) is the increase of devices that had been invented for speaking about it, having it
spoken about, inducing it to speak of itself, for listening, recording, transcribing and re–distributing
what is said about it: a whole network of varying, specific and coercive transpositions into
discourse. Rather than suppression, what progressed was a delimited and polymorphous stimulation
to discourse (Foucault 1978). Foucault holds no regard to what is termed as the 'repressive
hypothesis' as he feels that a society cannot be sexually repressed when there is such a provocation
to discourse upon this very belief (Bristow

Sexuality in the Renaissance
During the Renaissance period, sexuality impacted how people, both men and women, were treated
and how they behaved. The lives of women were completely defined by the ideals of sexuality that
were enforced during that time. Every area of a woman's life from birth was influenced by outside
influences rather than by they themselves. It took a particular type of woman to break past the
clearly defined description of what a "Renaissance woman" should be.
Sexuality is defined as one's sexual character which possesses the structural and functional traits of
sex. In the Renaissance, this definition was accompanied with ideologies of gender. This

A young woman would marry a man who was usually significantly older than she was. After
marriage, women were stuck in a home where the male was the head of the household and made all
of the decisions.11 Marital choice did not exist; at least not for women. Woman were forced to
marry men that they barely knew, thus even the most intimate details of their lives were decided not
by them, but by others. Love was usually not a factor in the marriage equation. Wife–beating was
also allowed and men sometimes imprisoned, starved, and humiliated their wives.12
Divorce did not come about until the Protestant Reformation and even then, it was mostly used by
upper class citizens. "Fornication, clandestine marriage, and adultery were sexual offenses related to
marriage." Adultery was seen as a "wife's crime" and was very serious. On the other hand, men did
the same thing but were not punished for it. These men even had children outside of their marriage
and the wife was expected to take care of them just the same. This happened mostly with high status
families, but in poorer families men resulted to bigamy of desertion. Either way, the woman was put
in an unfair position that she had to deal with.13

In fact, religion has particularly been the most influential factor in the cultural and political
constraints that have stifled the study of sex. The most popular religion in the world is Christianity,
which holds that the first humans, Adam and Eve, lost their innocence and divine good graces when
they ate the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden. This forbidden fruit is the symbolic
representation of Adam and Eve's knowledge of sex and clearly adheres a sinful, ruinous
connotation to sex and sexuality. Islam and Judaism also orate that sex is only sanctified in marriage
and is hallowed only for the purpose of procreation. With the threat of damnation at hand, it is no
surprise that the majority of the world's population has felt reluctant to tolerate or be open towards
the study of sexuality and the idea of pleasure–seeking sexual desire. The limitation of sexuality
throughout the world is founded in the fear of divine peril, which has prompted governments to
stifle sexuality through mandated dress codes, laws on exposure in media, contraception and
abortion laws, marriage laws and many others. The dissension between the development of sexual
study and religion must be discussed in order to explain the global restrictions on the theme of
sexuality and to uncover the discrimination that follows people who deviate from the holy norm of
heterosexual monogamy for reigning religions. Religious fear has led to practices such as
conversion therapy, circumcision, the banishment or imprisonment of unwed mothers, as well as
many other anti–sexual behaviors. The connection between religion and the history of sexuality

Human Sexuality Analysis
I came into Human Sexuality a giggling, prudish virgin. I'm leaving it... well, a giggling virgin, but
no longer a prudish one. In this class, I've grown exponentially, even if I still blush when I say
"penis."
At the beginning of the semester, I thought Human Sexuality was just a high school sex education
class (but hopefully a little spicier). This thought process was confirmed for me when I opened my
textbook to the middle, and I was immediately greeted by couples engaging in intercourse (quite
frankly). However, on day one, I learned that I was dead wrong. Human Sexuality isn't just about
"bumping uglies;" it's about our attitudes toward sexuality, our behaviors, and ourselves. It's about
embracing ourselves as human beings and being honest about the things that society has told us is
"taboo" to speak about, so we can all be safer, healthier, and happier.
The course was set up in a way that was really beneficial to me, as an awkward freshman with not a
lot of background in sexuality. We started from the ground (I still remember the first day, when we
yelled out slang for penis for a good ten minutes), and we worked our way up, step by step, in a way
that we could all keep up with. I never felt overwhelmed by the information given to me, but I was
thoughtful, and I was given plenty of time to chew on what I'd learned, whether that was with

The Importance Of Human Sexuality
Science defines human sexuality as one of the most complex and controversial topics, mainly
because it gets close to peoples thoughts and feelings and can also make people a little
uncomfortable. Human sexuality can come to help define each person as an individual but also as
social beings, this means that certain conversations about human sexuality can become heated and
personal. There is an article written by Mayer and McHugh ", which offers a careful summary and
an up–to–date explanation of many of the most rigorous findings produced by the biological,
psychological and social sciences related to sexual orientation and gender identity."
One section that this article by Mayer and McHugh discusses how difficult it is to really define
human sexuality. Because there are many different parts to this wide array of a subject, so it makes it
difficult to be able to give a definition that encompasses it all. Another subject that this article
discusses is Genetic and Innate factors saying that there is no sure way of telling why someone
would identify as a homosexual but that research in that area is still continuing.
Psychology asks the question "Why sex is still a central concern in psychotherapy." Really the
author is saying that sex is what makes people human, it is how they get to us and understand us
because like the other article said human sexuality is a tough subject because it gets close to people's
feelings and thoughts. This article says that human sexuality is not

Reflection On Gender And Sexuality

  • 1. Reflection On Gender And Sexuality Since October, I've been able to focus more on what I want to take from this class. I have enjoyed learning and reviewing what sexuality is for other people and why it's important to me. This semester has helped me figure out how much of what I have learned is opinion and how to separate that from what I learned that is actually fact. More than I expected lies on a spectrum, like gender, sexual orientation, and what kinks people are into. I also never anticipated that these things could be changing or adjusting as people develop because, for me, how I identify hasn't changed much and even when I learn about new kinks, I find them to be more interesting conceptually than intriguing as a possible personal experience. I always thought that learning about different experiences might change how I view things, but I am now under the impression that I have been exposed to more in my life with open communication in my family than most people in the class, gathering that only from who I could talk to more often: the people in my small group. I learned a lot about what other people believe in, we all seemed to agree that people are free in their gender and sexuality, but we could still see differently when things came down to prolife/prochoice discussion. Even though we all saw eye–to–eye at times, there were things that were solidified in our different cultures that we stood by, where discussion was skipped, which is fine. It might have been more like talking than listening ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Importance Of Human Sexuality Human sexuality is a complex and multi–layered subject affecting everyone on the planet. Opinions on the matter are nearly as various and numerous as there are people. Questions regarding what is healthy and what is not concerning human sexuality are still being ardently debated. Clinical research into human sexuality offers much helpful information, but can be limited in its scope. Philosophical and religious viewpoints can also provide valuable perspectives, but they, too, can be narrow in their approach. Integrating various disciplines with one's own experience offers broader exposure to information and, hopefully, with discernment, a healthier understanding of sexuality. As a Christian, I believe sexuality is a gift from God. Sexuality, I believe, is meant to express something rich, beautiful, and intimate in relationship with another person, and is meant to express something of the nature of God. After all, God did create people in His image as relational and sexual beings (Genesis 2). A healthy expression of sexuality, as Paris (2011) writes, "whether one is sexually active or not...generates energy, creativity and beauty. It's a gift from God that we're invited to receive and enjoy" (p. 12). Of course, with all the misinformation and abuse of sexuality in the world today, finding a healthy expression the "gift" of sexuality seems easier said than done. Unhealthy expressions of sexuality include attitudes that view sex as somehow dirty or sinful. The attitude ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Feminine Sexuality in The Storm Kate Chopin's short story 'The Storm'; describes an encounter of infidelity between two lovers during a brief thunderstorm. The story alludes to the controversial topic of women's sexuality and passion, which during Chopin's time no one spoke about much less wrote about. So controversial was 'The Storm,'; that it was not published until after her death in eighteen ninety–nine. The story is broken up into five sections, each filled with small clues and hints that reflect her message. In short, Kate Chopin's 'The Storm'; is about a confirmation of feminine sexuality and passion and a rejection of the suppression of it by society. The title of 'The Storm'; gives the reader a peek into the underlying meaning of the story. It obviously ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Her sexuality has been repressed by the constraints of her marriage and society's view of women, represented by the housework being done before the storm hits. Chopin alludes to this theme of suppression again as Alcee is invited into Calixta's home. The author writes, 'Come 'long in, M'sieur Alcee. His voice and her own startled her as if from a trance, and she seized Bobinot's vest. Alcee, mounting to the porch, grabbed the trousers and snatched Bibi's braided jacket that was about to be carried away by a sudden gust of wind.'; Alcee grabs Bobinot's pants, symbolically subverting the social and martial constraints that control Calixta. Chopin presents many details of Calixta's affirmation of her sexuality and passion. As the storm's intensity increases, it becomes necessary to put something underneath the door to keep the rain out. ''My! what a rain! It's good two years sence it rained it rain' like that,' exclaimed Calixta as she rolled up a piece of bagging and Alcee helped her to thrust it beneath the crack.'; The sexual connotation of 'thrusting it beneath the crack'; is evident, but it is important to notice that Calixta initiates this sexual act, not Alcee. This is a far cry from an ordinary, repressed housewife. Quite the contrary, Chopin actually ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Cybersex: Human Sexuality Cybersex promises to transform sexuality. Discuss. Human sexuality is an enormous part of a human life and people are constantly faced with sexuality challenges. As the world evolves, ideas and inventions are voiced and created to make life better for everyone and the internet is one of these creations becoming an essential part of many lives all over the world. Cybersex is a growing form of sexual expression over a computer where people get arousal through typed text, video, images and spoken voice (Waskul : 2003). Because cybersex is so wholly person, yet so wholly impersonal creates many interesting qualities in the phenomenon (Waskul: 2003). With the internet rapidly becoming one of the most used tools in the world, it seems only an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However for those individuals who don't use it as an escapism and purely to connect with the sexual minorities it could potentially transform sexuality. There is now an application on the i–phone called 'grinder' in which a gay boy can sign up and it will search for all the other same orientated people within a five kilometre radius of you. You can chat with someone and see if you like talking to them, and if so, this progresses to meeting up in person if both parties are willing. It seems to be of great advantage to those looking to connect with other like minded sexual beings. Cybersex is extremely accessible, and anyone can sign on practically anywhere, anytime. It could be argued that this is a brilliant innovation where bodies, sex and society are interrelated for the first time that it is transforming people and their sexuality through its availability (Waskul:2003). One does no longer have to wait to have sexual interaction by relying on someone else, it is all on your terms. If this is just as exciting to someone having the absence on a real body, opposed to actually having one, then it's hard to argue against there being a problem because you are causing no direct harm to anyone else if you use cybersex safely. If an individual is confused about their sexuality, the internet is very accessible ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. The Sexuality Of Female Sexuality In modern societies, where all the former taboos on sex are abolished, one subject can still raise a wave of debates. People of almost all religious views and social orders are ready to accept and be tolerant to homosexual or bisexual people, but the issue over the female sexuality is still unsettled. The question how it differs from the male sexuality and why exactly the attitude to female sexuality is different compared to the male one is discussed by lots of psychologists, sociologists and philosophers. However, there is no coherent and competent explanation yet. "Sexuality is messy, passionate, unclear, tentative, anxiety–producing, liberating, frightening, embarrassing, consoling, appetitive, and cerebral" (Schwartz, 1994, p. 8), ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She writes that "it is an established fact that the idea of female sexuality prevalent over the centuries is not something given in nature, or biologically true, but is only a "cultural construction" (Kar, 2015, p. 24). Kar considers that by being culturally constructed, it absorbed lots of means to disempower women, and the medical sciences together with literature is two most powerful tools of this cultural absorption. Cultural oppression and suppression constitute this process. According to Kar (2015), "within this system, female sexuality was believed to be essentially passive" (p. 24). People believed this because they were taught that biologically female sexual organs were devoted to serve only one function that is reproductive one. Sexual fulfillment was out of the question, a luxury that women could not afford. Women were considered to be less sexually desirous compared to men. They were obliged to seek fulfillment by following their "natural destiny", namely to be a good wife and mother. This all formed the stereotype of ideal female sexuality that is close to "neutral" because women should be modest, passive and even passionless. Such norm of sexual behavior was deeply rooted in many cultures and societies around the globe. However, some people were adherent to this norm, while others became the aberrant. Some women claimed that they had as much of the right to speak about sex as men. At the same time, each society tried to calm those who ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. Male Sexuality : Female Sexuality Female Sexuality Female sexuality intertwines with Possessing the Secret of Joy by illustrating its power and those who fear it. History In the early nineteenth century, heightened female sexuality was considered a disorder (Studd, 2006). Doctors and psychiatrist sought ways to prevent "masturbation and decrease libido". Issac Baker Brown– a gynecological surgeon removed the clitoris of a women who sought to use the Divorce Act of 1857 and leave her husbands as well as young women who read books and failed to follow their mothers' rules. Women received operations to remove their clitoris preventing sexual stimulation as a way of controlling their sexual desires. Applying of leeches to the vulva and the anus also destroyed the outer portions of the vagina. In the medieval times, men were fearful of the female sexuality and the madness they believed came along with heightened states of arousal (Studd, 2006). Current Dr. Kimberly Russell says culture influences control women by saying women are less interested in sex than men, and that women prefer monogamy. Women did not say that, but women believe it (Cavanaugh, 2013). Creating an environment where women control their urges to be sexual with more than one person, is called "slut shaming." This is an example of societal control over the libido of women. As evidence of this theory, Russell used other species who mate with several different mates to ensure procreation. • 25. Sexuality In Carmilla In Carmilla, Sheridan Le Fanu uses vampires to identify and challenge gender roles of women in the Victorian age. From the outset, Carmilla and Laura's relationship appears to transcend mere homosocial characteristics; Carmilla awakens sensations in Laura which she has never known before because her sexuality has always been suppressed. This suppression is inherently motived by the dominant ideology in Victorian culture that lesbianism, and homosexuality more generally, are "unnatural" forms of sexuality. According to Colleen Damman, "as a woman, Carmilla can only claim her sexuality after death" (). This is an interesting statement because it provides context for the idea that vampirism is the only way Carmilla can express her own carnal desires; She too is then subject to the constraints of Victorian culture. This to say that, for Le Fanu, the only way to have an open discussion concerning homosexual desire is to employ the vampire. Bearing this concept in mind, by analyzing certain key passages and elements of Carmilla and by applying some modern conceptualizations on gender and sexuality, one can see that Carmilla and Laura are merely byproducts of a period rife with sexual desire, frustration, and tension. In her essay titled "Compulsive Heterosexuality and Lesbian Existence," Adrienne Rich claims that any alternative to heterosexual outcome is discouraged by society. The essay claims that Western tradition has used the heterosexual family model as the basic social ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I was able to have a nice long phone call with her and learned a lot about how sexuality influenced her position in the mental health field. Roxanne works extremely hard and could not stop talking about how rewarding her job really is. As a Licensed Professional Counselor, she deals with kids on a daily basis. She works for Northwest Journey, which is a Day treatment facility that meets with families and kids that range from Elementary to High School. Sexuality has still influenced her position in many ways. There have been circumstances where some kids have opened up about being gay. Along with that, other kids have opened up about being sexually active. There also have been patients of hers that have been pregnant. • 33. Sexuality And Sexuality Among Older Adults Human sexuality is a very broad and in some instance a very sensitive subject. Depending on the audience, it is a topic that may cause uneasiness and awkwardness for some while for others it is a topic of preference. Although sexuality is a significant part of our modern–day culture in movies, videos, and other celebrity induced trends, it is still a subject that isn't easily discussed. Some will assert that sexuality only involves the act of sex which is probably the reason there is a sense of discomfort. This is in fact highly inaccurate, but it is used as a crutch to avoid discussing the topic altogether. Sexuality is a reality that it plays an important role throughout our lives. It intertwines physiological, psychological, and social ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As we grow into young adults, we move to a stage of sexual maturity. Sexual maturity is a time where we can procreate, where there will be in our stamina, and an increase in sexual desires for both men and women. This is something that happens for everyone after we have surpassed the puberty stage. All of this is matters because sexual arousal is a physiological function. The physiological aspect of this cartoon seems to be on the fence of positive and negative. The male seems to be more in a state of shock by his wife's actions, watching her as she is standing there holding the glasses of wine and the bottle and her verbiage (attempting to initiate intimacy but reminding him of the backup plan). It doesn't necessarily convey a negative response from the husband as if he is lacking interest, but he doesn't seem as enthused as his counterpart which could have a lot to do with the physiological aspect of him. It is possible that his stamina has declined due to his age or he could have possibly lost the ability to have sexual arousal for his elderly wife. The physiological response of the husband's actions or lack thereof can have a domino effect on the psychological dimension of this couple's relationship. As stated earlier, the husband is necessarily displaying a positive response to his wife's actions. He is just sitting there with a stunned face which can in return, make the wife feel negatively. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 37. Sexuality As A Social Experience Introduction Sexuality, it refers to "aspects of the body and desire that are linked to the erotic." (Macionis and Plummer, 2012) For many societies, sex or sexuality has long been seen as a taboo. They think that talking or discussing sexuality is an ignominious thing. Under this atmosphere, the societies will recognize sexuality as a private matter, which cannot openly discuss and even mention in the public area. However, is sexuality as a "real" private matter? Many people think that sexuality as a natural personal issue of life. However, all the participants of a society are learning what sexual behaviors are acceptable by the society through a process which called 'socialization'. What is socialization? Socialization is a lifelong social experience by which individuals construct their personal biography, assemble daily interactional rules and come to terms with the wider patterns of their culture. (Macionis and Plummer, 2012) Through this process, people will learn the distinction of 'good sex' and 'bad sex'. If our sexuality is shaped by socialization, that means the society affects our sexuality. Thus, sexuality may not as a private matter. Sexuality maybe as a public matter, because our society regulations. Regulations can understand as a censorship by the society or government, which related with the politics. We hear from our friends and family, from churches and neighbors, that sex is something you do with the person you love and trust, someone who you are going to share the rest of your life with. Sex comes with marriage, and with marriage comes a promise that you will remain with this one person "'til death do us part." But this is no longer the case, as people all over the world are having sex way before marriage. • 45. Sexuality Definition Essay Sexuality has always been an issue and something that is misunderstood as well as having a lot of moral debate. There are many ways that we can define sex and sexuality. But when it comes to having sexual freedom, it can be seen as being the ability to express and develop our sexuality without society or the government interfering, and can also be seen as a fundamental right. Our sexuality is important because it includes several things that help make us who we are. Sexuality is usually shaped by factors such as history, our culture, education, and our values. There's no doubt about it that there are substantial shifts in attitudes towards sex within each generation. Today's Millennials are more accepting of sexual expression, premarital sex, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Our values and religious beliefs have a lot to do with that. Most of the time parents are in the position where they pass on certain values to their children. Those values or beliefs might change throughout time or they might remain the same. My parents have always been positive in terms of what they regard as being appropriate behavior, without having to make me or my siblings feel guilty for expressing or questioning a point of view that's different than theirs. They don't necessarily force us to act a certain way, but they do give their opinion and advise us to be ourselves and be able to express ourselves physically and emotionally, but also in a respectful manner. For example, showing affection towards your significant other while out in public. This is not an issue with them because a lot of couples kiss in public and they have done it before as well, but they wouldn't like for us to show that type of affection to the point where other people around us would feel uncomfortable. Although I have more sexual freedom than my parents, I can also be conservative at times. • 49. Sexuality, Sexuality And Sexual Orientation Kiara Rivas Sociology 1 Due Date: 5/5/15 Human Sexuality Sexuality is something that seems to dominate a lot of the world we live in. It's in our schools, at work, and especially in the mass media. The way your body develops and the way you feel and respond to others sexually creates your sexuality ("Sexuality and Sexual Orientation", Youthoria). It can shape and affect people's lives as well as our own. Sexuality can be influenced by culture, religion, media, friends and experiences. Some people are very sexual, while others experience no sexual attraction at all. Sexuality has always been treated as taboo and some people are uncomfortable talking about it so they avoid it. For this reason sexuality can produce confusion, anxiety and fear. Sexuality includes much more than just sex. It includes anatomy, biological sex, gender, sexual orientation, relationships, and sexual behaviors ("Sex and Sexuality", Planned Parenthood). Applying the sociological approaches will give us a better understanding of human sexuality. Now that we have some insight on what sexuality is, we can apply the sociological perspectives. Starting with the structural functional theory, this theory argues that society consists of interrelated parts that work together to promote social order, unity, and balance. The structural–functional paradigm can be broken down by other type on functions: manifest functions, latent functions, and dysfunctions. The manifest functions regulates with whom your ... However, there is growing concern about people, especially those in young age's exposure to sexual content through electronic media such as TV shows, movies and music about its potential effects on their sexual attitudes, beliefs, and behaviours. These media have been sources of such inappropriate contents such as sex, drugs and violence to most of adolescents as they are exposed to many sexual images and messages. • 61. Sexuality In The Media During this semester, I've shaped my understanding of sex and sexuality through readings and discussions presented in class. Moreover, I've notice how the media is the major influence on our development as humans nowadays and that things are being expressed and experienced at younger ages, than ever before. Children and teenagers are discovering their sexuality at early ages. Thanks to the freedom that social media offer them; they have better access to express their personal identity rather than to limit themselves to their biological sex and society's role expectations. Also, I think that the media has been a helpful tool to change society's narrow point of view over gender roles, gender identity and sex. Today people feel comfortable to talk about their sexual orientation and sex in public. Homosexuality, transgender people and sex are not a taboo anymore and have become more common. ... However, it's also important to understand that the use of sex by the media it's firmly just for entertainment. Many of the series and movies we see today show teenagers getting drunk, high and having sex with different partners. The media give us this careless and superficial idea of sex. I remember in high school I used to listen to girls talking about their first sexual experience and why they chose older guys as their first partner. • 65. A History of Sexuality Essay Unlike sex, the history of sexuality is dependant upon society and limited by its language in order to be defined and understood. In his paper which is called Is There A History of Sexuality, Halperin drew a distinction between the topics of sexuality and of sex. He claimed that the two concepts are separate ideas. In Halperin's view, sex is a natural function that has not changed in many years, if ever at all. He says that sex "is a natural fact, grounded in the functioning of the body, and as such, it lies outside of history and culture" (Halperin 416). This means that sex cannot be measured in historical thought, for it has not changed since the beginning of time. As a natural function, it will continue to exist without the influence ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to Halperin, "the 'sexuality' of the classical Athenians...was constituted by the very principles on which Athenian public life was organized" (Halperin 419). By this he is referring to the fact that sexuality in the Ancient Athens society was socially constructed, but not in the way that it is understood to be socially constructed in modern thought. The so–called sexuality of the Ancient Greek peoples in Athens was directly related to how the society worked, how it was built and how it was understood. Halperin provides a quote from a French anthropologist who is named Maurice Godelier in order to make this point more apparent. This quote states that "it is not sexuality which haunts society, but society which haunts the body's sexuality" (Halperin 419). This statement re– emphasizes the fact that sexuality is a socially constructed concept, entirely dependant upon the society in which it is created in order to be best understood. The history of sexuality, therefore, is a brief history in the sense that the idea of sexuality is constantly being rethought and changed. Halperin sums up the concept of sexuality very well when he says that "[it]...is not a cause but an effect" (Halperin). The paper written by Kennedy and Davis, which was called The Reproduction of Butch–Fem Roles: A Social Constructionist Approach, provides further evidence that the history of sexuality is young and ... For this very reason, it is very easy for a person to compare his relationships with that of a relationship shown in media or film. Some relationships are total train wrecks from the start while others are not necessarily ideal, but healthy. Although not seen very often, ideal couples in film are attributed with characteristics that are seen by society as desirable; youthful, attractive people who are hyper–sexual and affectionate. At the same time, she begins to fall in love with another man that she is seeing. Not knowing what she wants, Jane must decide whether she wants to rekindle her relationship with her ex or move on to the newer man in her life. There are a few human sexuality themes that I noticed in this film. The first and most obvious theme that I noticed is how the film goes against the stereotypes that media places of sexuality and age. At often times, younger people are seen to have vibrant sexual relationship. The thing that I can admire about this film is that it shows sex between older people. Most people have misconceptions that when people achieve a certain age, they no longer have sex. This stereotype is not true. People who are in their 50's and up can still have very healthy active sex lives. This stereotype was something that the characters in the film seemed to struggle with. Both Jane and Jake were trying to fight the aging to seem more physically attractive. For example, Jane considered getting a facelift to compete with her ex's young wife. Jane also seemed to be very influenced by her friend's ideas on love and sex; their perspective seemed to alter her perspective. In the beginning, she was very conflicted in expressing her sexuality. She dealt with this struggle by succumbing to what they believed she needed to do in her own sex life. The second theme that I recognized ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The themes covered will be marriage and casual sex, gender roles and expectations, and religion and its influence on sexuality. To start things off I will be talking about the history of marriage and casual sex in the US during this past century and its key events starting with Dr. Kinsey. Considered one of the most iconic figures when it came to human sexuality, he was one of the first to openly express and talk about sexuality in the US, during a time that sex was taboo and a topic with false information. Because premarital sex started to become more popular in the US, it was found that the median age for first time marriage rose from 22.8 to 26.8 years for men and 20.3 to 25.1 years for women (105). Sexuality Reflection Paper Throughout the course, Religion and Sexuality, I have gained new insights on religion and its relationship to sexuality, further, I have learned skills on how to approach people about such topics (religion and sexuality) and how to critically evaluate these subjects efficiently. Lastly, this course has enabled me to discover new qualities about myself. Upon entering this course, my understanding of human sexuality was decent; I was aware of certain aspects of sexuality such as being straight, gay, lesbian, queer, transgender, etc. Nevertheless, I did not realize how expansive sexuality is; it never occurred to me that sexual health, prostitution, marriage, rape, sex trafficking, divorce, families, etc., all fell under the umbrella of human sexuality. Books and essays such as Renee Hill's Walk Together and David Shneer's "Out of School" showcased the multiple facets of human sexuality and how terms like queer are not directly related to homosexuality. While sexuality and homosexuality are linked, frequently, people mistake them as being synonymous; before entering this class, I was searching for a definition of sexuality, and often in the thesaurus section of dictionary websites homosexuality and or sexual orientation was considered a synonym of sexuality. Formerly, I too would have agreed they were the same, however, after taking this course, I concluded that homosexuality is just one topic in the broad discussion of sexuality. Jonathan makes an ultimate attempt to remain chaste himself, yet his unconscious desires are so great he is able to penetrate through his defense, in this case his eyelashes. It's wrong to believe that a young girl receiving kisses from her father is gaining any sexual pleasure from this act. Adler thinks that sexuality should be looked at with personality. He thought Freud was too focused on desire, and thought man was more than that. He believes that inferiority complexes come from whole situations, so not that a girl doesn't have a penis, but that she cant enjoy the privileges that come along with having a penis. • 94. Women 's Sexuality And Sexuality Women's sexuality has been anything but stagnant, especially within the last 150 years. The very idea of a woman being a "sexual being" is relatively modern. For centuries, women have been confined to restrictive behaviors until the rise of the sexual revolution in the 1960's. This movement gave way to new ideas and attitudes not only about a woman's role in society but also about their sexual identities. For the first time, women were able to freely act out their desires and seek their own personal pleasures. Often, the freedom to have more than one partner was the central idea of liberation for women's sexuality. Casual sex, which for men has always been a staple of their being, was now applicable to women challenging the idea that having multiple, non–committed sexual experiences was only natural and satisfactory to men. Professor Anne Campbell from Durham University in the United Kingdom conducted a study to find out if women, in fact, do enjoy having casual sex just as much as men do. It is not clear who actually funded the research but it can be inferred that administration of funding passed through Durham University. Her theory, "If women have adapted, then although they may take part in casual sex less often than men because of their stricter criteria when selecting partners, they should rate the experience positively" (Campbell, 2008) was tested by surveying a total of 1,743 men and women after they had a one night stand. HUMAN SEXUALITY ReNata Shaw APUS: Human Sexuality Assignment 2 Resubmit Dr. Foster November 29, 2015 Human Sexuality Introduction Sexuality encompasses aspects in a person's life that involves sex and gender identity, sexual orientation and sexual behavior. It encompasses the physical, social and psychological aspects of a person's sexual behavior. It underpins what an individual is, affects the individual's life wholesomely and is unique to each and every individual. A general stereotype of sexuality in old people exists in the society. Most people tend to believe that sexuality diminishes with age and that old people are not supposed to be sexually active beings. It is a reality however that most old people engage in sexual activities and have sexual needs even late into their lives (Connaughton & McCabe, 2015). Beliefs on sexuality in old people have greatly influenced negatively the way old people express their sexuality. The cartoon depicts an old couple possibly in one of their routine appointments with their family doctor. The couple despite the doctor's attempt to engage them in a conversation regarding their sexual health is reluctant to discuss it with their doctor. A reaction such as the one associated with this couple can be as a result of the negative way in which the society views sexuality in the elderly. • 114. Reflection On Human Sexuality This class was, potentially, the most enlightening out of any of our classes this semester. I tend to think about myself as incredibly open–minded and well–rounded when it comes to understanding the different aspects of human sexuality, but this class showed me how little I truly know. Listening to this class's guest speakers illuminated me to the depth of the BDSM community that I had previously been blind to. While I had known some about BDSM from simply a fetish/paraphilia/technical standpoint, I wasn't aware that it also denoted such a rich community. I suppose that I could have expected that BDSM would have it's own community, but, since it is outside of my realm of sexuality, I was simplistic in the way that I understood BDSM as only a fetish. My simplistic thinking is made worse when I consider the fact that one of my closest friends was a professional submissive for a few years prior to coming to Reno, but I never asked many questions because I felt that it would be too personal or would show potential holes in my knowledge. This is why I am so glad that we had guest speakers for this topic in class. When I was reading this chapter in the Lehmiller book, I found it to be informative on a baseline knowledge level, but it definitely lost a lot of the depth and complexity of the fetishes and paraphilia themselves, and particularly the people that practice these aspects of sexuality. Having a guest speaker come in allows for the other students, as well as myself, to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Authentic Sexuality In The Media Interestingly, despite the laws and regulations that exist in many nations and cultures, the subject of authentic sexuality is one of the issues that somehow have caused a stir in modern societies. It never had seen this phenomenon as it is seen today, since which unfortunately has contributed to it in being a fake and not authentic sexuality is the media, since this have an enormous influence on the true concept of what it means an authentic sexuality. The media thereby had affecting the lives of many and especially in the lives of adolescents, often to the erroneous instruction that they have at home about sexuality, "Children quickly pick up on parental attitudes that reflect discomfort with the topic. • 122. Honoré's Sexuality For the most part, Honoré does not give a clear sense of the main characters' sexualities. He never explicitly defines any of their sexualities, but he hints at what they may be through their dialogues, songs, and sexual relationships. For example, the viewer learns that the threesome between Ismaël, Julie, and Alice was Julie's idea during a conversation she has with her mother. This seems to indicate that she has an attraction or curiosity towards both men and women. Alice agreed to be a part of the threesome and then later engages in a relationship of sorts with another man. This seems to indicate that Alice also has an attraction or curiosity towards both men and women. The fact that Julie was eventually unhappy with the threesome perhaps ... • 126. Kinsey On Sexuality EARLY RESEARCH ON SEXUALITY Sexuality is a central aspect of being human, and an essential feature of life – impacting the general well–being and overall quality of life. It is also vital for understanding and defining the concept of sexual health. Although sex and sexuality have been the topics of interest of many artists, writers, painters and musicians throughout human history, scientific research on human sexuality did not begin until 19th century. The commencement of the modern era of sex research was marked by Alfred Kinsey, an American biologist, who published two statistics–packed volumes on human sexuality, Sexual Behaviour in the Human Male and Sexual Behaviour in the Human Female. These Kinsey Reports, as the books have been referred ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The early 1990s saw the emergence of studies examining the relationship between job demands reported by one partner, usually a working man, and the satisfaction of their spouse, usually a stay– at–home woman. Poor psychological well–being and marital dissatisfaction were associated with partner's high levels of work stressors (Jones 1993 a; Jones et al. 1993 b; Jones & Fletcher 1996). A person's overall levels of happiness can be affected by their satisfaction with their marriage or intimate relationship, and this in turn is often heavily influenced by levels of sexual satisfaction. The notion that marital and sexual satisfaction are related was confirmed in a study investigating the relationship between stress and sexual relationships (Morokoff & Gillilland 1993), and sexual expression (high levels of sexual activity and a satisfied sexuality expressed by both partners) has been indicated one of three factors predicting relationship satisfaction (Sprecher et al. ... • 130. Female Sexuality : Male Sexuality Female Sexuality Female sexuality has been a controversial subject that plays a crucial role in our everyday lives. There is a constant double standard women face. In terms of sexuality both males and females are more similar than society deems them. It begins with parents; they have a great impact on how their daughters view sex and their own sexuality. Also female sexuality is considered taboo when they become mothers. There is a never ending battle of hypocrisy that women face when it comes to sexuality. These problems are influenced by gender roles, socialization, and even religion. It is considered a conquest for men to have many sexual encounters. We as women are considered sexual objects but are expected to be virtuous. When a woman is open about her sexual desires and needs, she is condemned or depicted as a slut. A woman withholding sex is considered a prude. These common clichés that women face are degrading and allows us to see how flawed the system is. Parent's sexual beliefs impact their children's sexuality and view on sex, they learn from what they see and are told. What they learn remains with them. When a female becomes a mother, her lifestyle usually changes. Society doesn't seem to accept mothers being sexualized. Basically when you become a mother you shouldn't be sexual. Daughters grow up knowing her mother wasn't a sexual person because she is a mom. This follows the daughter, when she becomes a mother the pattern will most likely repeat itself. ... • 134. Sexuality In The Victorian Era The history of female sexuality is complicated, marked and continuously derailed by a patriarchal system that suppressed studies into its origins and societal norms that prevented a healthy expression of natural sexual feelings. The Victorian Era in particular was guilty of many standards that influenced the ability of women to express themselves in a sexual manner; assumptions about female passionlessness, which was upheld as the norm for the time, led to complete standstills on studies involving female sexuality. Sex scientists were actively persecuted and their work destroyed if it contradicted the generally accepted Victorian Era guidelines surrounding sex: it was meant to be a reproductive act, not a sought–after expression of love and desire. Many women who had orgasms or received sexual pleasure were sent to asylums, where their sexuality was treated like a mental illness and the women were labeled as hysterics. Since female sexual pleasure was criminalized and was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The era's sexologists, many of whom focused on sexuality outside of the heterosexual and male– oriented norms of their societies, were unfortunately prevented from speaking out, but that failed to stop them from making advances into understanding female anatomy. Magnus Hirschfield's revolutionary facility in Berlin was destroyed by the Nazis, alongside "20,000 volumes, 35,000 photographs, 40,000 confessionals and biographical letters, and many unique objects..." (Matte, 266), but his work inspired future sexologists to continue their research and restore what was lost. Unfortunately, setbacks such as these were common, with many governments limiting their citizens in their studies and denouncing their work. The individual states, all those that repressed their scientists from conducting research, are therefore guilty for the lack of information that is currently available about female sexuality and ... • 138. History Of Sexuality History of Sexuality by Michael Foucault is a project in dissolution of the notion that Western society has experienced a repression of sexuality since the seventeenth century. Furthermore, he contends with the notion that sexuality has not been the subject of public discourse. The goal of this paper is an effort to expound, through Foucault understandings, that modern society has employed the mechanisms essential for engendering true discourses regarding sex. Foucault advances three uncertainties in "A Will to Knowledge", volume one of The History of Sexuality: First, is sexual repression an established historical fact? Is what is materializes to under our scope indeed the highlighting or formation of a regime of sexual repression beginning ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He asserts that the desire to address the repressed nature of sex participated in the very organization that it was seeking to decipher (Bristow, 1997). Foucault contends further by suggesting that it is uncharacteristic to modern societies not to relegate sex to a sinister existence but to address it ceaselessly while at the same time exploiting it as the secret. Foucault expresses that rather than a puritanism of language or a unvarying concern to conceal sex, what marks those three centuries (17th – 19th) is the increase of devices that had been invented for speaking about it, having it spoken about, inducing it to speak of itself, for listening, recording, transcribing and re–distributing what is said about it: a whole network of varying, specific and coercive transpositions into discourse. Rather than suppression, what progressed was a delimited and polymorphous stimulation to discourse (Foucault 1978). Foucault holds no regard to what is termed as the 'repressive hypothesis' as he feels that a society cannot be sexually repressed when there is such a provocation to discourse upon this very belief (Bristow ... • 142. Sexuality in the Renaissance During the Renaissance period, sexuality impacted how people, both men and women, were treated and how they behaved. The lives of women were completely defined by the ideals of sexuality that were enforced during that time. Every area of a woman's life from birth was influenced by outside influences rather than by they themselves. It took a particular type of woman to break past the clearly defined description of what a "Renaissance woman" should be. Sexuality is defined as one's sexual character which possesses the structural and functional traits of sex. In the Renaissance, this definition was accompanied with ideologies of gender. This incorporated knowledge led to their notions of the female being inferior to the male based on what was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A young woman would marry a man who was usually significantly older than she was. After marriage, women were stuck in a home where the male was the head of the household and made all of the decisions.11 Marital choice did not exist; at least not for women. Woman were forced to marry men that they barely knew, thus even the most intimate details of their lives were decided not by them, but by others. Love was usually not a factor in the marriage equation. Wife–beating was also allowed and men sometimes imprisoned, starved, and humiliated their wives.12 Divorce did not come about until the Protestant Reformation and even then, it was mostly used by upper class citizens. "Fornication, clandestine marriage, and adultery were sexual offenses related to marriage." Adultery was seen as a "wife's crime" and was very serious. On the other hand, men did the same thing but were not punished for it. These men even had children outside of their marriage and the wife was expected to take care of them just the same. This happened mostly with high status families, but in poorer families men resulted to bigamy of desertion. Either way, the woman was put in an unfair position that she had to deal with.13 Motherhood was an expected part of the wife's life. Woman would have a large number of babies right after each other although some babies would not survive. • 146. The History Of Sexuality The second section of the documentary will focus on the aspect of gender identity throughout the history of sexuality. As sexual identity and gender identity are entirely different, it is important to include both topics and, for the issue of gender identity, to highlight its own diverse spectrum and the subsequent social stigmas and medical developments that have surfaced around it. Throughout sexual history, whether an individual identified as male, female, or intersex, controversy and societal disapproval often occurred if the individual's identity did not match the gender they were biologically born as, per their genital structure. By the mid–nineteenth century, corrective surgery for the polysemous gender community had taken root. Particularly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In fact, religion has particularly been the most influential factor in the cultural and political constraints that have stifled the study of sex. The most popular religion in the world is Christianity, which holds that the first humans, Adam and Eve, lost their innocence and divine good graces when they ate the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden. This forbidden fruit is the symbolic representation of Adam and Eve's knowledge of sex and clearly adheres a sinful, ruinous connotation to sex and sexuality. Islam and Judaism also orate that sex is only sanctified in marriage and is hallowed only for the purpose of procreation. With the threat of damnation at hand, it is no surprise that the majority of the world's population has felt reluctant to tolerate or be open towards the study of sexuality and the idea of pleasure–seeking sexual desire. The limitation of sexuality throughout the world is founded in the fear of divine peril, which has prompted governments to stifle sexuality through mandated dress codes, laws on exposure in media, contraception and abortion laws, marriage laws and many others. The dissension between the development of sexual study and religion must be discussed in order to explain the global restrictions on the theme of sexuality and to uncover the discrimination that follows people who deviate from the holy norm of heterosexual monogamy for reigning religions. Religious fear has led to practices such as conversion therapy, circumcision, the banishment or imprisonment of unwed mothers, as well as many other anti–sexual behaviors. • 150. Human Sexuality Analysis I came into Human Sexuality a giggling, prudish virgin. I'm leaving it... well, a giggling virgin, but no longer a prudish one. In this class, I've grown exponentially, even if I still blush when I say "penis." At the beginning of the semester, I thought Human Sexuality was just a high school sex education class (but hopefully a little spicier). This thought process was confirmed for me when I opened my textbook to the middle, and I was immediately greeted by couples engaging in intercourse (quite frankly). However, on day one, I learned that I was dead wrong. Human Sexuality isn't just about "bumping uglies;" it's about our attitudes toward sexuality, our behaviors, and ourselves. It's about embracing ourselves as human beings and being honest about the things that society has told us is "taboo" to speak about, so we can all be safer, healthier, and happier. The course was set up in a way that was really beneficial to me, as an awkward freshman with not a lot of background in sexuality. We started from the ground (I still remember the first day, when we yelled out slang for penis for a good ten minutes), and we worked our way up, step by step, in a way that we could all keep up with. I never felt overwhelmed by the information given to me, but I was thoughtful, and I was given plenty of time to chew on what I'd learned, whether that was with homework ... • 154. The Importance Of Human Sexuality Science defines human sexuality as one of the most complex and controversial topics, mainly because it gets close to peoples thoughts and feelings and can also make people a little uncomfortable. Human sexuality can come to help define each person as an individual but also as social beings, this means that certain conversations about human sexuality can become heated and personal. There is an article written by Mayer and McHugh ", which offers a careful summary and an up–to–date explanation of many of the most rigorous findings produced by the biological, psychological and social sciences related to sexual orientation and gender identity." One section that this article by Mayer and McHugh discusses how difficult it is to really define human sexuality. Because there are many different parts to this wide array of a subject, so it makes it difficult to be able to give a definition that encompasses it all. Another subject that this article discusses is Genetic and Innate factors saying that there is no sure way of telling why someone would identify as a homosexual but that research in that area is still continuing. Psychology asks the question "Why sex is still a central concern in psychotherapy." Really the author is saying that sex is what makes people human, it is how they get to us and understand us because like the other article said human sexuality is a tough subject because it gets close to people's feelings and thoughts. This article says that human sexuality is not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
