Australia Fashion Analysis
Textiles Theory Essay
Throughout Australian history, fashion has been shaped by geographical, seasonal and cultural
aspects of life. The '200 Years of Australian Fashion' exhibition featured over 120 artworks from
more than ninety designers. From the early dressmaking establishments in the 1800s to the
contemporary studios in the present day, this exposition showcased designs from the past 200 years.
This essay will describe, analyse and compare one artwork before 1960 and additionally a design
after 1960.
The first garment being described and analysed is an evening dress designed by Pat Rodgers and
Neil Rodgers around the year of 1959. It was created using silk (organza), silk (taffeta), feathers

These plastic sequins are sewn onto the checkers, matching their colours and generating a rough
texture. The feathers, on the other hand, create a furry and soft texture, making this garment very

Comparing both garments described above, the first is a dress while the second garment is a
pantsuit. Both incorporate the use of ostrich feathers to produce a soft and smooth texture, however,

feathers. The inclusion of feathers make the garments appear to mimic birds, the first garment
imitating a graceful bird such as a swan, and the second, impersonating a vividly colourful bird such

Arguably the most controversial garment in the history of fashion, the corset is a classic item that
has lasted the test of time. Made to adjust the wearer's body to the aesthetics through centuries, the
lingerie item remained an essential in many women's closet. Throughout its existence, the corset has
been condemned and misunderstood as a torturous device for the female body, but it is more than
that (Steele, 2001, 1–2). This report is dedicated to exploring the corset changes in form, its
purposes and meaning from the 15th – 16th century. Taking into account that the corset has a long
history, only the main events and mainstream viewpoints in its timeline will be examined. The focus
will be placed upon the garment's construction, the main events that causes its evolution and what it
meant for women at the time.
I. The Evolution of the Corset Form from the 15th – 16th Century
1. The Metal Corset The credit of inventing the corset couldn't be attribute to just one person like
most inventions. Clothing and fashion evolve out of earlier styles to cater to social, technological
and aesthetic phenomena. Corsets, or stays, were believed to have first appeared in Ancient Greek or
Minoan Crete (Fontanel, 1997, 10). Yet due to the lack of cultural continuity, the theory wasn't very

'Topshop 'or direct competitors such as River Island and Dorothy Perkins. This research will enable
me to gain knowledge on what my TMG looks for when buying special occasion dresses and what
other companies do to make their products stand out and be successful in such a big market. I will
take this knowledge into consideration when I design my dress and it will help me to incorporate
features which other companies use to sell their products.

I have decided to look at this dress from River Island as the store is a direct competitor to Topshop.
The shop is popular amongst 14–25 year old females but their prices are a bit higher than what my
client offers. This is shown throughout the company and in their products. River Island sells a
variety of special occasion dresses so the store is one of the first places that my TMG would look at;
by looking at specific aspects of their garments, I will be able to understand what features make it a
successful company and how they make their clothing commercially viable. This dress costs £75

This decade is full of new and interesting fashion trends! Fashion allowed women to have their own
freedom which often conflicted with the equality of men. But here are the decades latest trends.
Earlier in the decade was when the shoulders were allowed to return back to the normal state, being

Fashion In The 1800s
With over thousands of clothing collections from prehistoric life to the present, the Museum of
London, Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Fashion Museum in Bath allow visitors to observe the
many changes that occurred in fashion throughout the years. With my prior knowledge about the
1800s fashion styles, I began to focus on a different era within the 19th century at each museum.
Focusing on different eras enabled me to thoroughly analyze and compare each fashion style.

The styles of tutus that they are mainly would have is Bell shaped tutu skirt or romantic tutu. In the
film Black Swan the style that the corps de ballet have designed is the bell shaped tutu. (See Figure

This has followed the conventions of how the costume is designed in the Swan Lake. But the

Giselle And The Romantic Era
The romantic era had begun in the early 19th century and was the most innovative era for the ballet.
Known for the reflection of art and literature, the romantic era was the time of fantasy, etherealism
and supernaturalism. Female dancers became the superstars of the ballet especially with the

Giselle has a strong passion for dancing however, her heart limits her from doing what she loves.
Later in the ballet she finds out that the man she loves dearly is engaged with another woman.

Good morning everyone and if you haven't already guessed my collection I have chosen is Cutting
Edge Couture. This collection was featured in spring–summer 2010. In this cutting Edge Couture
collection I'm focusing on this specific piece. In this cutting Edge Couture piece displays a black
cotton and pistachio–green polyester tulle cut out dress. The bodice is comprised of black cotton as
well as the slip which can be seen through the hole of the dress. The green tulle lightly covers
sections of the bodice and overlaps at times increasing the opacity in the overlapping areas. The ball
gown skirt is voluminous as the tulle is tightly packed together resulting in a ball gown skirt shape.
The most unique feature of the dress is the missing chunk between the top and bottom half of the
skirt maintaining its multilayered form. The illusion of the seemingly sawed in half skirt aspect
addresses the cutting edge theme. Due to the unimaginable construction of the piece keeps the

Before the Victorian Era, the main focus of fashion was for men. Women's' fashion changed some,
but the general idea of long skirts, tight bodices, and heavy fabrics stayed consistent. Real changes
to style and fashion were not made until about the 1840's, when Queen Victoria came into power.
After her rise to Queen, the fashions began to change dramatically. Pride and Prejudice is a book
written in this time, and the fashion is clearly visible. Looking at fashion of the time can be clear
examples of social customs, role models, and other aspects of the time period.

Women's fashion had undergone many characteristic modifications prior to 1750 and more so into
the eighteenth century. Fashion trends were being set in the Old World, from France to England, and
Colonial women were all too painfully aware of the need to adapt towards a sophisticated and up–
to–date appearance.
The popular style of dress, modified for the occasion, was characterized by a full skirted silhouette.
The look included form fitting bodices paired with long hoop skirts of washable linen, cotton or
wool atop shifts and form fitting corsets (stays). Stays were the rage or curse for women's wear
during the Colonial era and were inset with unforgiving whalebone...a feature that could tend to
restrict the movements and activities of the wearers. Little wonder why. (Its been recorded that
ladies of the day were considered quite the 'loose woman' if not wearing their stays when out in
public.) A Stomacher, a bit of inverted triangular fabric that held the front of the gown together, was

fashion sphere for women in France. The time period itself was a mark of great change for the
history of France due to various political reasons as well as various art movements and often times
fashion, despite being a branch of art, is overlooked by most viewers. However, fashion during this
time excelled in France and was essentially the symbol of a new era in this domain; French fashion
was now snowballing into something much greater that still echoes to this today. Ultimately, the
goal of this essay is to describe women's fashion during the period of 1715–1789 and the shifts it
made through the analytical use of various sources including artwork, literature, museums' online
archives and internet sources.
Critical Review of Sources
One of the main sources used in this essay was a general historical overview from the end of the
15th century up until the French revolution. The source is subdivided into essays and gave detailed
descriptions apropos to France's political, economical, and social circumstances during the time
period of 1715–1789. Apropos to artwork, Vigée Le Brun's, 'La reine en gaulle', was looked at in
order to have a better understanding as to what the chemise à la reine was like and since this
painting was done during the time period by the artist, it seemed appropriate to incorporate this

Emmy Award Show Report There were gorgeous and amazing dresses in Emmy Award Show 2016.
Among many beautiful dresses by talented designers, I chose five best dresses of the female stars
and two best tuxedos of the male stars. I chose those dresses not only because the dresses were
beautiful themselves, but also because the dresses looked fantastic on the stars with perfect colors
and moods. First female star was Michelle Dockery. She wore white and black dress by Oscar de la
Renta. It was ankle length on the front and floor length on the back with sweetheart neckline and A–
