The magnitude of this challenge was reinforced by the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) which announced in June that the combination of global economic slowdown and high food prices had pushed another 100 million people into a state of chronic hunger and poverty. The total number of people on the planet who are malnourished has now surpassed the one billion mark.
