Digital Graphic Narrative Planning
Use this booklet to help structure your planning and collate your planning documents.
Considerations:
There are lots of things to consider in this project. Fill out each section in detail to show you have thought about each one. You
should imagine that this is a live project, so considerations like cost, quantity and codes of practice must be thought about in that
context rather than just as a college project.
Costs:
I will be using a mac and with Photoshop CS6 both of which are already provided by college.
However I will be sourcing images from the internet to use in my project so unless I use stock/royalty free images there
might be some cost concerns in terms of rights and use.
Available resources:
I will be using rotoscoping so I have images sourced from the internet that I can use so long as they don’t exactly
replicate the original. I also have a Mac with Photoshop CS6 at college, I also have a Windows laptop at home with
Photoshop CS5.
If I can’t find an image that I want to use then I have my Mobile’s camera that shoots in 1080p so that I can take images
with it to then rotoscope.
Quantity:
My product will be more of a specialist production as appose to a more mainstream one as it is based off of a popular
internet urban legend so people who are not avid internet users will not really understand what the book will be as
much as a more regular internet user who knows the story.
Audience and Target Market:
My audience is both parents and children because:
Many children including and myself grew up being very fond of the idea of pirates and becoming a pirate due to
products such as Monkey Island, Yo Ho Ho etc. So I using this premise to keep the childhood fantasy of pirates alive by
creating a relatable story such as Peter Pan, which involves children, like the reader
This book is not targeted toward adults but will still attract their attention if they have/had an interest in the internet
tale.
Quality Factors:
As this book is aimed at children I will use a diverse colour range as at a younger age children are more interested in a
cartoon appearance as appose to a more photo-realistic as it is easier for them to understand.
I have also drawn out detailed concepts of each page and I will use these as the base when producing my pages, this
will help me to get the pages completed a lot quicker than if I began on just a bare screen.
Codes of Practice:
Codes of practice include: Time, Quality and illegality.
Time – This is, in my opinion, the most important aspect as it states that if the work is not submitted on time then the
author will not get paid for their work.
Quality – This aspect of the codes states that the product must be completed to the quality guidelines that are agreed
with the publisher. If the work is submitted and not to the publishers liking but fits the guidelines then the author will
still be paid even if the book does not get released
Illegality – This section is not necessarily as relevant as the others as It works under the acts: Obscene Publications and
Equality. As these are books aimed at children so it is highly unlikely that anything obscene will be published.
Regulation:
This says that books must meet the Toy Safety Directive, this is due to younger children having a tendency to put toys
and other objects in their mouth so if a book Is made of paper a child is likely to get paper cuts from it or do further
harm this is why children’s books are made form card.
Another aspect of books that is changed under the Toy Safety Directive is a book having pointed ends which could be
lethal to children if for instance they were to drop it on their selves. This is why they have curved edges so children
cannot inflict any injury on themselves.
Copyright:
My work may be seen as a breach of the copyright act of 1976 meaning permission if use will need to be applied for as
the original Candle Cove story Is written by Kris Straub and posted on creepypasta.com which states in it’s regulations
that all stories on there are copyrighted by their authors. However I have completely altered the story as the original is
of the horror/supernatural genre where as my work is a version more fit for a children’s book.
Some aspects of different fan artworks are rotoscoped, however I have altered these and they don’t significantly
resemble the original so copyright claims are very unlikely to be made over this.
Ethical Issues:
These issues include aspects such as ageism sexism etc. All of which are part of the Equality Act of 2010. For Instance if
a woman is always the one getting into trouble and the man always becoming the hero this could arise if a complaint
was made.
In my story there are no female characters that visually appear so this may be a minor discrepancy however my
justification is that I am tailoring this story around the age old stereotype/representation of pirate in media which is
that the majority if not all are male.
Resources:
A successful project relies on good planning. Considering all the resources you will need for a project and then assessing which
you already have and which you need will help ensure you are ready to start your project.
If there is a resource you don’t currently have, then consider how you are going to get it before you go in to production.
Resource:
Do you have
it? What do you need to do to get it?
Mac
Supplied by
College To use the Mac I need to attend College
Photoshop
The College
Macs have
CS6 installed
and my
personal
I will use the CS6 for when I am attending college but if I do not
meet a goal or wish to do some work on the project I will use
CS5 on my laptop outside of college.
laptop has
CS5 installed
Laptop
I have my
personal
laptop that I
will use
outside of
college time.
This is my own laptop that I can use at home to work on or
bring in to college on study days.
Test Page
Yes, I will
use the
Percival and
George
models from
it. This test page is backed up on my laptop as well as on my USB.
Digital Flat Plans
Yes, used as
the basis for
pages. Also backed up on my laptop as well as my USB.
Images No.
I will source images from the internet to rotoscope and
depending on whether they are royalty free or not I will need to
make sure they do not resemble the originals.
Production Schedule:
Delivering your project on time is vital. In order to do this, you need a solid plan of action. This will help you divide up your work in
to manageable chunks to be tackled one at a time. It will also allow you to plan which tasks need to be done in which order. It will
also allow you to track your progress each day. If you are falling behind, you will need to modify the way you work. If you work
faster than expected, you can clearly see what the next steps you need to take are.
Each session is a half day of college.
Session 1:
I will begin work on the scenery of page one as I already have the George model from the test page
Carry on work for page one scenery, which will follow adding items to George’s bedroom such as the
Television, drawers etc.
Finish Work on page one scenery and add text
Session 2:
Page 2 is in the same setting as number one so it is just a matter of adding George in a different position
and adding extra background items which are George’s pirate toys, posters, etc. I will also add the text
for this page.
Finish page 2
I will begin work on the models of Poppy and Captain Silver ready for page 3 and most of the book.
Being work on page 3 scenery (same page as test page)
Session 3:
Carry on page 3, this will follow the deck, positioning as well as the background imagery of the sea and
sky.
Finish page 3
Page 4 has less content that the others so I will begin work here by starting on the upper panel which is
George, Percival, Silver and Poppy in the same position as before only up scaled and zoomed in,
Carry on page 4 which involves me creating the island of Candle Cove and adding the details such as
paths, houses etc.
Finish page 4 by adding the text.
Session 4:
Begin page 5 which involves the Fun-Taker’s ship in the background of the ship.
Carry on Page 5
Finish page 5
Page 6 is an aerial shot of the Laughingstock sailing toward the Fun-Taker’s ship I will begin with the
scenery which is the surrounding islands, sea, sky and minor details.
Carry on work from page 6, by beginning work on both ships
Finish page 6 by colouring the ships and adding the text
Session 5:
Page 7 is set aboard the Fun-Taker’s ship and therefore this will require copying the Laughingstock and
adding details such as broken windows darker colours etc. I will begin here
Carry on page 7 which will require the darkening of the background as well as the addition on dark
clouds to add to the atmosphere.
Carry on page 7 by rotoscoping the lighting and positioning it in the background of the characters and
ship.
Finish page 7 by adding text
Session 6:
Begin work on page 8 which shows us a side on perspective of Percival holding a sword as well as the
appearance of the Fun-Taker. I will begin with the Percival side on view.
Carry on page 8 by finishing Percival as well as his sword and beginning work on the Fun-Taker.
Finish Page 8 by finishing the Fun-Taker and his sword as well as adding the text.
Start Page 9 which is the beginning of the battle between George and the Fun-Taker, George is on a
side perspective. I will begin with George and his sword.
Session 7:
Finish page 9, after finishing George and his sword I will reposition Percival’s eye’s and change his
mouth I will also add the text required.
Page 10 is the full battle and has an entirely new setting. I will begin work on the side on ship.
Carry on page 10 by creating the full body versions of George and the Fun-Taker.
Carry on page 10 by copying each model of the battle and moving them closer to the edge each time.
Session 8:
Finish page 10 by adding the final scene with the defeat of the Fun-Taker.
Page 11 uses the same scenery as page 8 but includes the portal as well as different expressions of the
characters. I will begin with the portal.
Carry on page 11 by moving onto the facial expressions of each character.
Finish page 11 which requires me to add the text.
Session 9:
Begin page 12 which is in George’s bedroom again so I can borrow the scenery from page 1/2
Carry on page 12 by adding in Percival’s sword and adding the mural and plaque.
Finish page 12 by adding the concluding text.
Session 10:
Return to previous pages to add extra detail and or fix any errors that I may have encountered.
Health and safety:
Your health and safety and that of those around you is very important. Just like in industry, an accident could prevent you f rom
working. Whilst we don’t work in a highly dangerous environment, there are still risks. Some are short term, such as trips and
spillages whilst others, such as long term damage to eyesight or back problems, may affect you much later in life.
Consider the risks based on the activities you will be undertaking during the project. Explain how you could prevent them from
happening.
Ensure you reference appropriate pieces of legislation, design to protect people at work.
Health and Safety Issue How can you prevent it?
Spilling liquids over electronics.
Keep water well away from the machines.
Part of The Computer Health and Safety act 1974
Tripping hazards with wires
Not trailing wires across the room and keeping close to
anything connected.
Part of the Health and Safety at Work act 1974
Damage to eye sight
Frequent breaks from staring at screens.
Part of The Computer Health and Safety act 1974
And
Health and Safety at Work act 1974
RSI (Repetitive Strain Injury)
Ensure you are say at the macs properly and using
adjustable chairs.

Digital Graphic Narrative Planning Guide

  • 1. Digital Graphic Narrative Planning Use this booklet to help structure your planning and collate your planning documents. Considerations: There are lots of things to consider in this project. Fill out each section in detail to show you have thought about each one. You should imagine that this is a live project, so considerations like cost, quantity and codes of practice must be thought about in that context rather than just as a college project. Costs: I will be using a mac and with Photoshop CS6 both of which are already provided by college. However I will be sourcing images from the internet to use in my project so unless I use stock/royalty free images there might be some cost concerns in terms of rights and use. Available resources: I will be using rotoscoping so I have images sourced from the internet that I can use so long as they don’t exactly replicate the original. I also have a Mac with Photoshop CS6 at college, I also have a Windows laptop at home with Photoshop CS5. If I can’t find an image that I want to use then I have my Mobile’s camera that shoots in 1080p so that I can take images with it to then rotoscope. Quantity: My product will be more of a specialist production as appose to a more mainstream one as it is based off of a popular internet urban legend so people who are not avid internet users will not really understand what the book will be as much as a more regular internet user who knows the story.
  • 2. Audience and Target Market: My audience is both parents and children because: Many children including and myself grew up being very fond of the idea of pirates and becoming a pirate due to products such as Monkey Island, Yo Ho Ho etc. So I using this premise to keep the childhood fantasy of pirates alive by creating a relatable story such as Peter Pan, which involves children, like the reader This book is not targeted toward adults but will still attract their attention if they have/had an interest in the internet tale. Quality Factors: As this book is aimed at children I will use a diverse colour range as at a younger age children are more interested in a cartoon appearance as appose to a more photo-realistic as it is easier for them to understand. I have also drawn out detailed concepts of each page and I will use these as the base when producing my pages, this will help me to get the pages completed a lot quicker than if I began on just a bare screen. Codes of Practice: Codes of practice include: Time, Quality and illegality. Time – This is, in my opinion, the most important aspect as it states that if the work is not submitted on time then the author will not get paid for their work. Quality – This aspect of the codes states that the product must be completed to the quality guidelines that are agreed with the publisher. If the work is submitted and not to the publishers liking but fits the guidelines then the author will still be paid even if the book does not get released Illegality – This section is not necessarily as relevant as the others as It works under the acts: Obscene Publications and Equality. As these are books aimed at children so it is highly unlikely that anything obscene will be published. Regulation: This says that books must meet the Toy Safety Directive, this is due to younger children having a tendency to put toys and other objects in their mouth so if a book Is made of paper a child is likely to get paper cuts from it or do further harm this is why children’s books are made form card. Another aspect of books that is changed under the Toy Safety Directive is a book having pointed ends which could be lethal to children if for instance they were to drop it on their selves. This is why they have curved edges so children cannot inflict any injury on themselves.
  • 3. Copyright: My work may be seen as a breach of the copyright act of 1976 meaning permission if use will need to be applied for as the original Candle Cove story Is written by Kris Straub and posted on creepypasta.com which states in it’s regulations that all stories on there are copyrighted by their authors. However I have completely altered the story as the original is of the horror/supernatural genre where as my work is a version more fit for a children’s book. Some aspects of different fan artworks are rotoscoped, however I have altered these and they don’t significantly resemble the original so copyright claims are very unlikely to be made over this. Ethical Issues: These issues include aspects such as ageism sexism etc. All of which are part of the Equality Act of 2010. For Instance if a woman is always the one getting into trouble and the man always becoming the hero this could arise if a complaint was made. In my story there are no female characters that visually appear so this may be a minor discrepancy however my justification is that I am tailoring this story around the age old stereotype/representation of pirate in media which is that the majority if not all are male. Resources: A successful project relies on good planning. Considering all the resources you will need for a project and then assessing which you already have and which you need will help ensure you are ready to start your project. If there is a resource you don’t currently have, then consider how you are going to get it before you go in to production. Resource: Do you have it? What do you need to do to get it? Mac Supplied by College To use the Mac I need to attend College Photoshop The College Macs have CS6 installed and my personal I will use the CS6 for when I am attending college but if I do not meet a goal or wish to do some work on the project I will use CS5 on my laptop outside of college.
  • 4. laptop has CS5 installed Laptop I have my personal laptop that I will use outside of college time. This is my own laptop that I can use at home to work on or bring in to college on study days. Test Page Yes, I will use the Percival and George models from it. This test page is backed up on my laptop as well as on my USB. Digital Flat Plans Yes, used as the basis for pages. Also backed up on my laptop as well as my USB. Images No. I will source images from the internet to rotoscope and depending on whether they are royalty free or not I will need to make sure they do not resemble the originals. Production Schedule: Delivering your project on time is vital. In order to do this, you need a solid plan of action. This will help you divide up your work in to manageable chunks to be tackled one at a time. It will also allow you to plan which tasks need to be done in which order. It will also allow you to track your progress each day. If you are falling behind, you will need to modify the way you work. If you work faster than expected, you can clearly see what the next steps you need to take are. Each session is a half day of college.
  • 5. Session 1: I will begin work on the scenery of page one as I already have the George model from the test page Carry on work for page one scenery, which will follow adding items to George’s bedroom such as the Television, drawers etc. Finish Work on page one scenery and add text Session 2: Page 2 is in the same setting as number one so it is just a matter of adding George in a different position and adding extra background items which are George’s pirate toys, posters, etc. I will also add the text for this page. Finish page 2 I will begin work on the models of Poppy and Captain Silver ready for page 3 and most of the book. Being work on page 3 scenery (same page as test page) Session 3: Carry on page 3, this will follow the deck, positioning as well as the background imagery of the sea and sky. Finish page 3 Page 4 has less content that the others so I will begin work here by starting on the upper panel which is George, Percival, Silver and Poppy in the same position as before only up scaled and zoomed in, Carry on page 4 which involves me creating the island of Candle Cove and adding the details such as paths, houses etc. Finish page 4 by adding the text. Session 4:
  • 6. Begin page 5 which involves the Fun-Taker’s ship in the background of the ship. Carry on Page 5 Finish page 5 Page 6 is an aerial shot of the Laughingstock sailing toward the Fun-Taker’s ship I will begin with the scenery which is the surrounding islands, sea, sky and minor details. Carry on work from page 6, by beginning work on both ships Finish page 6 by colouring the ships and adding the text Session 5: Page 7 is set aboard the Fun-Taker’s ship and therefore this will require copying the Laughingstock and adding details such as broken windows darker colours etc. I will begin here Carry on page 7 which will require the darkening of the background as well as the addition on dark clouds to add to the atmosphere. Carry on page 7 by rotoscoping the lighting and positioning it in the background of the characters and ship. Finish page 7 by adding text Session 6: Begin work on page 8 which shows us a side on perspective of Percival holding a sword as well as the appearance of the Fun-Taker. I will begin with the Percival side on view. Carry on page 8 by finishing Percival as well as his sword and beginning work on the Fun-Taker. Finish Page 8 by finishing the Fun-Taker and his sword as well as adding the text. Start Page 9 which is the beginning of the battle between George and the Fun-Taker, George is on a side perspective. I will begin with George and his sword. Session 7: Finish page 9, after finishing George and his sword I will reposition Percival’s eye’s and change his mouth I will also add the text required.
  • 7. Page 10 is the full battle and has an entirely new setting. I will begin work on the side on ship. Carry on page 10 by creating the full body versions of George and the Fun-Taker. Carry on page 10 by copying each model of the battle and moving them closer to the edge each time. Session 8: Finish page 10 by adding the final scene with the defeat of the Fun-Taker. Page 11 uses the same scenery as page 8 but includes the portal as well as different expressions of the characters. I will begin with the portal. Carry on page 11 by moving onto the facial expressions of each character. Finish page 11 which requires me to add the text. Session 9: Begin page 12 which is in George’s bedroom again so I can borrow the scenery from page 1/2 Carry on page 12 by adding in Percival’s sword and adding the mural and plaque. Finish page 12 by adding the concluding text. Session 10: Return to previous pages to add extra detail and or fix any errors that I may have encountered. Health and safety: Your health and safety and that of those around you is very important. Just like in industry, an accident could prevent you f rom working. Whilst we don’t work in a highly dangerous environment, there are still risks. Some are short term, such as trips and spillages whilst others, such as long term damage to eyesight or back problems, may affect you much later in life. Consider the risks based on the activities you will be undertaking during the project. Explain how you could prevent them from happening.
