Similarities Between Scarlet Begonias And Fire On The...
Scarlet Begonias/Fire on the Mountain Essay
Michael Peller has been a fan of the Grateful Dead for as long as he can remember. As a child, he listened to
their albums on cassette tapes in the car, and as a college student, he attended live performances.
The Grateful Dead debuted in 1965 in Palo Alto, CA. It was known for its eclectic, psychedelic rock style,
which was sculpted amid the San Franciscan countercultural movement of the 1960s. The movement gained
speed alongside the civil rights movement and hippie culture. The Grateful Dead embraced these new beliefs
in their songwriting, rejecting common structure by adopting the "jam" genre, which is based off of live
improvisation.
Mike's favorite Grateful Dead songs, "Scarlet Begonias" and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, the parts of the song that most affected Mike Peller were the allusions to and imagery of the 70s.
The song's story follows a young man, walking around the local square, who is entranced by a young woman
with "scarlet begonias tucked into her curls" (Grateful Dead). She also had "rings on her fingers and bells on
her shoes," a line that has stuck with Mike because of how the image reminds him of the 70s, and as an
extension, the ideas of freedom and being carefree. Mike doesn't have much of an opinion about the lyrics of
"Fire on the Mountain", but he does love the rhythm and the bass guitar because "it just makes anybody want
to dance" (Michael Peller). However, I found the lyrics to be meaningful in ways related to Mike's enjoyment
of the song. The line, "fire, fire on the mountain", is repeated throughout the song, and almost sounds like an
urgent call for help. Despite this, the beat and music rolls on. The song pokes fun at a "long distance runner"
who continues to make and dance to music even as "a dragon with matches" is "loose on the town". But when
fans dance to the music live at a concert, the lyrics take on a different meaning: on how even as everything is
burning down, the fans keep dancing and the Grateful Dead keeps

Communication In Maniac Mageee
In the book, Maniac Magee, Jerry Spinelli uses descriptive details, dialogue, actions, and thoughts to develop
one of the main characters, Amanda Beal. I am Amanda Beale. I like to communicate. I personally think I am
very good at it. I have three brothers one sister. I love books especially encyclopedias. I hope that you will let
me teach at John T Baker Middle School. One quality that I have that would be good for this job is being able
to communicate well. For one I communicate well with others. I speak with confidence and reason, depending
on how the person is acting or the situation. For example once I had to say this to a person that was being a
bully "I got a little brother and a little sister that crayon all over my books, and I got a dog that eats them and
poops on them and that's just inside my own family, and I'm not gonna have nobody else messing with my
books!" Even though I am clearly mad in this case I still spoke with confidence I spoke clearly and I had
evidence for the situation I was in. Another example of me being communicating well is once I found my
friend Maniac is a buffalo pen at the zoo late at night in the west side of town. I had to convince him to come
home. This is what I told him " you do not have a choice. I am not asking you. I'm telling you. You are coming
home with me, and you are going to sleep in my room, which is going to be your room– and I don't care if you
sleep on the floor or the windowsill or what–but you are going to sleep there and not here." As you can see I
am talking to Maniac about the fact that he will come with me and that he will not sleep in the buffalo pen. I
spoke clearly stated my claim and told him what needed to be done. His shows that if I need something to get
done I will communicate with the person. Finally I think I'm communicative because in my life I have
probably gone through many stages. One of these stages was taking baths with my brothers. When I finally
grew out of it I had to tell them, communicate with them. This is what happened " Then came a day when
Amanda entered fourth grade, and she decided she was getting too old to tub it with her little brother and
sister." This shows that Amanda decided to communicate with her

Stand By Me (movie Review For Small Group Com) Essay
A Summer To Remember
The movie Stand By Me is based upon a novel by Steven King. It doesn't have the same eerie feel as some of
his other books and is generally a more serious movie. It takes place in the small town of Castle Rock,
Oregon. It is the middle of the summer in approximately the early 1960's. The kids are bored and that is the
setup for their adventure to go find a dead body in the woods.
The main role of Gordie LaChance is played by Wil Wheaton. He is having trouble in his life at this time
because he just lost his brother and his parents are having a very difficult time dealing with it. Chris Chambers
was played by River Phoenix. Chris is considered a loser ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Vern whines that it means they are all doomed and should go back. Vern also slows the group when he refuses
to go into the woods away from the tracks towards the trail. He then plays the role of backseat driver (class
notes) when they reach the swamp saying, "I told you we should have kept following the train tracks". Vern
hindered the development of the group. While they could have been devoting time to the task at hand, they
had to spend time helping him with trivial things like dealing with him being scared when they are in the
woods. While Vern slowed the group by challenging many of the group's ideas, Teddy presented a much
different challenge to the group.
Teddy is described in the beginning as being reckless and wild. He holds to that description right in the
beginning with two crazy incidents. When they leave in the beginning and are walking on the train tracks,
Teddy goes a little bit nuts and says he is going to dodge the train. It takes the entire group to pull him away
from the train tracks before the train comes. Teddy also becomes difficult when the run away from the old man
in the junkyard. When the old man calls his father "looney" Teddy flips out. He starts kicking and punching
even though he's on the other side of the fence. This remains a problem with the group because they have to
spend time comforting him before they get back on the road again. On more then one occasion Teddy got in
small fights with almost

The Most Famous Guitar Players For Find Success At Fame
One of the more famous guitar players to find success at FAME was Duane Allman. In September of 1968,
Allman went to visit Hall, with the hopes of joining FAME as a studio musician. Hall remembered that
Allman "was a huge fan of the things I was doing – Jimmy Hughes, Arthur Alexander, Clarence Carter, Joe
Tex. He knew about all the records I was cutting and was heavy into black music." However, at the time, Hall
did not need another guitar player. This did not scourge Allman and he stayed in the Shoals, waiting for his
chance. When Duane finally did get the chance to play for Rick Hall, he made a lasting first impression "One
day we were doing a demo and he had his bottleneck," says Hall. "To be honest with you, I hadn't saw many ...

The day Johnson and the other section member informed Hall of their plans, Hall signed a million–dollar
contract with Capitol Records to produce artists on FAME's record label. Hall offered each of the section
members a base salary of $10,000 a year to become FAME's exclusive band, but they earned nearly double
that figure the year before and could not justify signing Hall's offer. Johnson remembers that Hall had "been
up all night, but I thought he reacted good under the circumstances. He did tell us, 'I would do the same thing,
but you'll never make it.'" Hall immediately started looking for other local musicians and found Junior Lowe
on guitar, Jesse Boyce on bass, Freeman Brown on drums, and Clayton Ivey on keyboards. They became
known as the "Fame Gang." Over the years Hall would bring new musicians into the Fame Gang. Linda Hall
states, "There was always a different set of musicians trying to get started, they weren't as good as the ones
Rick used all the time, but he just called these guys in and developed his new rhythm section. He had done
this at least four or five times. A studio musician has to be very motivated, creative type person." On April 12,
1969, Billboard announced the new FAME and Capitol Records partnership. The article entitled "Black Jobs,
Culture Gain Capitol Boost" outlined, "(Capitol's) joint financial venture with

Motioning toward the sofa, Detective Johnson said, "Maybe you should have a seat."
Sitting on the sofa, Marlene said, "Okay, what happened."
"A neighbor found a body this morning and called 911. She identified the woman as Katherine Lincoln. She
gave us your name, address and said Mrs. Lincoln was your mother. Is that correct?"
Shocked, Marlene said, "Katherine is my mother, but you're wrong. Mom isn't dead. I saw her last night, and
she was all right."
"They pronounced her dead at the scene," Detective Johnson said.
"I don't believe it was my mother."
According to the picture on the Connecticut driver's license, we found in the house the deceased woman was
Katherine Lincoln," Detective Wallace said.
"It can't be my mother," Marlene said, struggling to maintain her composure without arguing with the
detectives. "If it's Mom, my friend, Jennifer will know. She works in the coroner's office. I need to call her,"
she said, removing her phone, and called her friend. Marlene, asked, "Jennifer, did they bring mom to the
morgue?"
Dropping the phone onto the floor, Marlene fell backward and screamed, "They just brought her in. What
happened?"
"They won't know what happened until they complete the investigation," Jennifer said. "Did you find the
murder weapon?" Marlene asked.
"We think we found the murder weapon, a statue was found in a trash can," Detective Wallace said, wondering
why she would ask such a question.

The Argument For The Elimination Of Television
Approximately twenty five billion dollars is spent on advertising a year, a number far greater than the amount
spent on education nationally. Why so much money? Jerry Mander in his book Four Arguments for the
Elimination of Television, lays out the numerous problems that exist with television, a problem that cannot
necessarily be improved. In essence, technology is not a tool that is neutral. Mander describes that in different
institutions and technologies, such as advertising, mass production, militaries, the basic structure of particular
technology or institution establishes its influence on the world, the types of individuals that will make use of
it, and how people will use it. Television is a tool that established the kinds of effects it will have on peoples
lives, how people will use it, and who will use it, and if such technology continues to be used, the kinds of
effects and political forms that will result from it. Mander develops four arguments throughout his book. The
first argument Mander describes is that television conditions people to accept another person's authority. He
begins by explaining that although television might be interesting and useful it packs people into a mental as
well as a physical condition suitable for the appearance of autocratic control. Artificial environments,
therefore, strip individuals of obtaining direct knowledge of nature. He follows his second argument by stating
that technological advances are controlled by the "powers that

Essay on The Popularity of Seinfeld
The Popularity of Seinfeld
Add a dash Elaine, a spoonful of Jerry, a pinch of George, and handful of Kramer and you end up with a
perfectly seasoned spicy sitcom that Americans just can not get enough of. Seinfeld, featuring the hilarious
stand up comedian Jerry Seinfeld himself, is dear to many of our hearts and the show plays an essential part in
satisfying our constant quest for humor. The show focuses on real life situations and problems such as
romance, friends, careers, and adventures that everyone can relate to. I believe that Seinfeld is attractive to
most people for a variety of reasons. For these reasons the shows success was inevitable. Each of the
characters has it's own unique personality and by using this formula ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Jerry's contribution to the fearsome four is as important as the peanut butter in a peanut butter and jelly
sandwich. It's great by itself, but even better with its complements. His character appeals to the sensible and
laid back audience because they can relate. However, the complete opposite types swoon over him because
they envy the qualities that they would like to possess. I would have to say that Jerry is mostly responsible for
the shows immediate fame and without him Seinfeld just wouldn't be Seinfeld. Jason Alexander, who plays
George, has a unique combination of traits that make him irresistibly hilarious. He pulls off the sympathetic
and charming sort while other times he's purely devious and radical. He plays Jerry's sidekick and together
they foolishly run around New York City like kids in a candy store. Jason also has his share of
accomplishments such as two Emmy nominations, a Golden Globe nomination and two American Comedy
Awards for best supporting actor in a television series. George portrays the baldheaded stingy mastermind
who's always stirring up trouble and brewing up schemes to make him look cooler than we all know he really
is. His tendency to become easily red faced and throw random tantrums captures viewer's attention. Because
of George's love/hate relationship with his friends he is always a focal point for the show. His short,

`` Gasoline Alley `` By Frank King
In Gasoline Alley, Frank King uses closure to take an average human being, Skeezix, and place him into a
surreal world, and in doing so immerses his readers in the fantastic wonderlands they observe. In The
Superman Chronicles, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster do the opposite by using closure to take a surreal being
and place him into the real world of the readers to show how alien Superman is to planet Earth. For clarity,
closure is defined in Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics as, "Observing the parts but perceiving the
whole." Simply put, closure in comics allows the reader to become an active participant in the story. This
participation allows the reader to become fully immersed in the world of the characters which leads to an
experiential connection between the reader and the character. In order to understand how real and surreal are
to be interpreted in this paper, they must be defined. The Merriam–Webster Dictionary defines surreal as,
"marked by the intense irrational reality of a dream," and defines real as, "not artificial, fraudulent, or
illusory...occurring or existing in actuality." The creators devise diametric plots, but the use of closure as a
mechanism to create the immersive worlds in which their readers and characters coexist are nearly the same.
Frank King and Siegel & Shuster both use closure as a vehicle to convey the concept that their respective
characters are living representations of the opposition between real and surreal, this is evident in

Grateful Dead Essay
Throughout history there have been many musical "influences". One extremely important
influence to modern music is The Grateful Dead.
The group was formed in 1965 by bluegrass – enthusiast Jerry Garcia on guitar and vocals, Ron
"Pigpen" McKernan on vocals and organ, Bob Weir on guitar and vocals, classical music student
Phil Lesh on bass and vocals, and Bill Kreutzmann on drums. From the beginning, they brought together a
variety of influences, from Garcia's country background to Pigpen's feeling for blues (his father was an
R&B radio DJ) and Lesh's education in contemporary serious" music. Add to that, the
experimentation encouraged at some of the group's first performances at novelist Ken Kesey's ... Show more

Grisman is a still a renowned mandolinist, but while with Garcia, they both explored the bluegrass scene. This
was Jerry's "foundation" for his musical contributions to the Grateful Dead. Without Jerry's
influence, the Grateful Dead would not have it's distinct earthy timbre or feel that has been extremely
significant in attracting their particular following.
Another contribution to the Dead's style was bassist Phil Lesh. With only formal jazz training on the trumpet,
Lesh picked up a bass and learned as he went while playing with the Grateful Dead's then nucleus, The
Warlocks. Lesh is famous for his jazz improvisational style. This particular style usually finds his fingers
running up and down the neck of a five or six string bass (seen right), dropping what are affectionately known
to fans as "Phil Bombs", furiously low frequency notes that tend to rumble in auditoriums and can
only be created with a five or six string bass. As one can well imagine, these two aforementioned styles
together could create somewhat of an interesting style. Well, it only gets better.
Bill Kreutzmann, the "heartbeat" of the Grateful Dead, had been behind a kit since the age of
eleven when Jerry Garcia met him in 1962. His early love of drums allowed him to be heavily involved in the
"rock and roll" scene. As a teen, Kreutzmann even created rock in roll bands in which to play, as
the interest was barely there. After meeting

10:00 AM, UNUM Field Visit with Ms. Veronica Alvarez at the Starbucks coffee shop, located at 11979
Garvey Ave. El Monte, CA 91732. The Field Representative continue to wait for Ms. Alvarez that she was late
for her 10 o'clock appointment, when she arrived at 10:30 AM, as she exited from a four–door white Kia
compact vehicle. Ms. Alvarez who was recognized from our previous meeting with her on December 19,
2017, when she had refused to provide her statements since she was legally represented was observed driving
the said vehicle. Miss Alvarez was seen exiting the driver side of the car as she walked in a normal gait
towards our direction where we waited for Ms. Alvarez inside the Starbucks coffee shop. We noted that the
vehicle appeared to be a newer vehicle which had a paper rear license plate.
Before Ms. Alvarez met with us at the coffee shop, we noted that she did not ambulate with any walking
devices or walking canes. She did not appear to be in any pain or any discomfort as she had both of her hands
to her side while she swayed back and forth with both of her hands to her side as she walked briskly across the
parking lot.

Raymond Carver Narrator
Anyone who has read Raymond Carvers "Cathedral" knows that the narrator is not looking forward or
welcoming his guest into his home. Also, he is not being very sympathetic of what this man's condition that he
lives with is, being blind. The Narrator must learn to be more sympathetic in his life, and should learn from
this experience, with this older bling man. Raymond Carver uses his narrator non–sympathetic ways
effectively throughout the story, developing of the narrator from the beginning to the end, and how the
narrator would not be as effective if he showed sympathy throughout the short story. The narrator fails to show
sympathy throughout the story to show that the man not judge him for what he is, to show the "Its really
something" moment, and to show the problems of the couple underneath what is happening. First, Carver uses
his non–sympathetic narrator effectively throughout the short story, by showing that the blind man can see
more than him sometimes. The narrator says from the beginning that he does not like how this blind man is
coming to visit him and his wife. He knows that that the blind man and his wife have had known each other
longer than the two of them have known each other. Instead of welcoming his wife's old friend, he categorizes
her friend with her past. Showing the narrator is jealous and pity, which then makes you wonder if Robert, the
blind man, was involved in her suicide attempt or her divorce. This explains how Robert would have a better

would like to particularly observe relating to American culture/values. Some ideas included interactions
between American people, gender differences as well as employees attitude. I wanted to examine the ways in
which Americans behave around people or their behavior towards other people. Before the field trip, I had a
few thoughts/assumptions/beliefs about Americans such as I thought Americans were more hostile and
reserved, they usually keep to themselves. However, my assumptions changed after the field trip which will be

Some even started up conversations with the stranger next to them like "How has your day been?" or "the

friendliness of people showed me American's authentic/genuine spirit. It made them look more likable and
accommodating. Furthermore, I observed the interactions between male and female and how it relates to
gender differences. I noticed that majority of men were a gentlemen and have manner. For example, a few
men would let women go ahead of them in line when they both arrived simultaneously, being complete
strangers. This showed me equality in society such as how men treat women with care and as well as goodness
of humanity. This could also be form of norm in society in American values as a gentlemen –– courtesy and
politeness. It is our expected perception of masculinity –– what society deems as appropriate behavior for a
"man". The attitudes of the employees particularly put a smile on my face. They were hardworking, took
orders down politely and efficiently, ensuring that my order was perfect. They had manners and gave me a
positive/happy vibe. They made sure to work fast and efficiently, trying their best to not hold up the queue.

Summary OfThe Yellow Pill Short Story
Sanity is in the mind of the beholder; one man's reality may not be the reality of everyone. This becomes a
sticking point when two men meet in either a psychiatrist's office or in the depth of space in the short story
"The Yellow Pill." Since both men cannot be in reality, the story takes place in a comfortable office based on
evidence from the story. Throughout the story, Mr. Elton talks with Gerald Bocek in his office about the
details of Jerry's crime. It is at the end of each conversation they have in the office that proves them to be on
Earth. Mr. Elton tells the police officers to take Gerald out of his office and back to the mental ward. For
example, after their first conversation Mr. Elton says, "All right, take him away. Bring him back the same time
tomorrow." The two officers pushed him firmly toward the door. The officers taking Gerald out of his office
every time they talk shows that they are on Earth and not in space. Gerald would die immediately if he was
taken outside of a spaceship, because of the lack of atmospheric pressure and oxygen. Gerald also comes back
into Mr. Elton's office each day which means he couldn't have died in space, which would be caused from
leaving a spaceship every time Mr. Elton and him talk. In the story Mr. Elton is discussing the problems about
Gerald Bocek with Helena, but before they had started talking Gerald had told Mr. Elton to take a pill and that
nothing bad would happen. During Mr. Elton's conversation with Helena he says, "I took one three years ago
when they first became available. You'd be surprised how little you actually see of what you look at, especially
of people. You look at symbols instead. I had to cancel my appointments for a week." Mr. Elton is proving that
the pills blurred his sense of reality. This shows that the pills cause hallucination and the reality Gerald is
living in is a messed up reality, furthering the argument for why they are on Earth. Towards the end of the
story after Mr. Elton has taken the yellow pill and Gerald ejected himself from what they considered the
airlock. When Gerald had ejected himself it is described as, "Jerry's chest quickly expanded, then collapsed as
a mixture of phlegm and blood dribbled from his

Importance Of Music In My Life
Music has always been a big part of my life. I remember the radio or record player always playing music at
home growing up. I sang in the choir at church and school. I also played the trumpet all through middle
school, I was even first chair in eighth grade. Once I was in high school, attending concerts became a regular
outing for me and my friends. I have continued to keep music in my life to this day.
The first period of my life represented is early childhood. I honestly could not think of one song I may have
loved between ages 0 to 4. Any music that I would have listened to would have been what my parents liked at
the time. I decided to look up hit songs for the year I was 4 years old. Looking through the list I remembered
that I loved Chicago's song "Saturday in the Park". Every summer we traveled to Maine growing up to visit
my Grandma, and this song was my favorite. I specifically remember playing in the garage and listening to
this song over and over again. Every time I hear this song I think of Summer and all the fun I had growing up.
It was released in 1972, but was still popular when I was in this time period. I still love it.
The second period of my life represented is elementary school. I loved Bonnie Tyler's "Total Eclipse of the
Heart". These were the days of listening to the top forty with Casey Kasem on Saturday morning and taping
songs you liked. I had to tape this song so I could listen to it over and over. I loved her deep voice and this

Stargirl Character Analysis
The book Stargirl, written by Jerry Spinelli, is about a girl named Stargirl Caraway. Stargirl recently enrolled
in a new high school after being previously homeschooled. She was different from the other students in
several ways. Stargirl wore different outfits and acted differently from the other kids. She plays her ukulele at
lunch and she is nice to everyone despite not receiving the same treatment from the other kids. After amusing
behavior at a football game, Stargirl becomes a cheerleader and is the most popular girl in school. However,
Stargirl was cheering for the opposing team during basketball season, the student body turned on her. After
some time during the school year, the student body accepted Stargirl for who she was after the dance.
Throughout the story, Stargirl was treated too harshly by the other students from the first few months of school
when everything about her was being judged and through her acceptance, eventual rejection, of her by the
students. Stargirl came into the school welcoming to her new community. Her niceness was surprising to the
other students. "In the hallways, she said hello to perfect strangers. The seniors couldn't believe it. They had
never seen a tenth–grader so bold." (Spinelli 10). Her boldness was also demonstrated by her participation in
class where she made up songs, asked questions that were different than the subject matter being taught, sang
happy birthday to people in the lunchroom and veering off track on the cross country team. "We did not know
what to make of her. In our minds we tried to pin her a corkboard like a butterfly, but the pin merely went
through and away she flew." (Spinelli 15). The activity in which Stargirl began to showcase her personality
was cheerleading. What started out as a joke to the community with her crazy dancing and cheers led to
Stargirl becoming a cheerleader for the football and basketball teams. "The change began around
Thanksgiving. By December first, Stargirl Caraway had become the most popular girl in school. How did it
happen? Was it the cheerleading?" (Spinelli 36). Up to this point, the students went from questioning Stargirl's
differences to accepting them in three months. Stargirl was quickly

Essay on The King of Comedy Life of Jerry Lewis
The King of Comedy Life of Jerry Lewis
"I shall pass through this world but once. Any good therefore, that I can do or any kindness that I can show to
any human being, let me do it now. Let me not differ nor neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again"
(TOJLCMS, 5). For Jerry Lewis, this was a common outlook he had. Jerry has devoted his life to entertaining
others and putting a smile on their faces. Although he did suffer numerous struggles, Jerry Lewis has still
successfully made it to the top (Lewis, 3).
Joseph Levitch was born March 16, 1926 in Newark, New Jersey. He was born to Danny and Rae Levitch
(Levy, 1). "Jerry's folks were part time entertainers and because of this, he was left home a lot" (Lewis, 15).

the year the two made their last nightclub appearance together at the Copacabana, exactly 10 years to the day
since they became a team" (Shaviro, 1).
Jerry then met a female by the name of Patti. "Jerry and Patti were married by a justice of peace in Greenwich
Connecticut" (Levy, 50). Patti was a Catholic but did not wanted to convert to Judaism because she felt secure
in her faith since childhood (Levy, 50). "In April of 1943, before the authority of a rabbi and the watchful eye
of Rae, Danny, and a small brood of aunts and uncles, and cousins, Jerry and his six month pregnant wife
stood under a Chuppah to be married once again" (Levy, 50).
Lewis had a love for baseball. "During the 50's and 60's, Jerry played 1st base with numerous Professional
baseball teams and trained every year with the LA Dodgers" (TOJLCMS, 2). Through this experience, He has
become close friends with Gil Hodges (TOJLCMS, 2).

The Arabian Nights. Unlike the stories of Jaques and his Master, in Jaques the Fatalist, where digression plays
well in a journey without a specific purpose, the stories of Shahrazad and her use of digression has a clear
objective. The main character of The Arabian Nights, Shahrazad, makes use of her abilities as an effective
storyteller to keep her audience engaged with a perfect sense of Kairos that achieves several purposes:
arousing the King´s curiosity and keep it lingering, keeping herself alive, establishing her own ... Show more

In a traditional point of view, humans are "above" animals, but the ability of the merchant to understand the
animals defies the traditional hierarchy. This decentralization of the relationship between a human and an
animal is significant in the fact that the words of a rooster end up influencing the actions of a person (the
merchant). The rooster represents the traditional patriarchal concept of male "superiority" over female since he
discusses a stern piece of advice with a dog, after he "jumped on a hen and, finishing with her, jumped down
and jumped on another" (Haddawy, 19), displaying a behavior of control and disrespect over the opposite sex.
The rooster indirectly advises the merchant, through his conversation with the dog, to "fall on her" (referring
to the merchant´s wife) (19) and beat her with an oak branch until she has no desire to question her husband´s
actions. The merchant heeds the words of the rooster, and reestablishes the hierarchy of male over female
dominance by using impulsive and violent animal like brutality. Yet, the hierarchy of human–reason
dominance over animalistic behavior was diminished after the merchant followed the advice of his cock. The
Tale of the Merchant and the Demon also explores changes of hierarchies related to the crossing of human–
animal border. In the First Old Man´s Tale, the infertile wife of the old man, driven by her jealousy, causes the
death of the old man´s mistress, and

Tom Cruise Case Study
Tom Cruise is one of Hollywood's most recognizable celebrity worldwide and thus a perfect subject to break
down three psychological concepts seen throughout the media. Motivational bias, where people sees what he
wants to see, (1) is the first topic we will cover about Tom Cruise. During the filming of the movie "Mummy"
which was originally scripted as a horror & thriller movie, the leading star Mr. Cruise decided to take over and
change the script to more of an action movie because he personally thought the movie would be not only
better but more successful. Another concept that goes hand in hand with motivational bias is our next topic
about Self–fulfilling prophecy, a prediction that becomes true (2). The Mummy, unfortunately was a box
office flop. Tom Cruise predicted that if he made all these changes to the script and increased the movies
spending budget that it would be successful, but that not ended up being the case. Scientology is popular
amongst the celebrities but Tom Cruise without a doubt has made it abundantly clear about his connections
with the church and this is where our third concept comes into play of the route of persuasion. Moscovici
Theory, how the minority can influence the majority, (3) explains the breakdown of Mr. Cruise's views and
beliefs of his Church to the public eye during sit down televised interviews.
Tom Cruise, the hollywood heavyweight, is the man to psychologically break down for his unique
characteristics and the stories he crafts. Mr.

The Layers Of Lies : How Memories And Truths Are Created...
Layers of Lies
I can see that the truth is a mirage. To put it simply, there is a real truth between hundreds of layers of
manufactured truth. The truth I may know at a moment in time will be altered if a second point of view is
added to my truth; the truth is therefore an illusion. What one person may regard as the truth is different from
what another may believe and that is because we absorb specific moments of time based on what we think is
important and that is how memories and truths are created or dare I say, manufactured. In relation to the short
story "In a Grove" by Akutagawa, you can clearly observe this phenomena, as I choose to call it, occur. The
bandit, wife, samurai and witnesses have all chosen to absorb specific moments of this event. The question I
place forward is, is this deliberate or unintentional? Or is this an effect of cognitive biases? There is truth in
the midst of the confessions of the parties, somewhere between the journey to Wakasa, meeting the bandit and
the death of the samurai, lies the truth. One truth is clear, a man, woman and a horse can be held constant. The
woodcutter revealed that he saw a man and a woman on a horse. The policeman admitted to arresting
Tajomaru (the bandit) and attested to seeing a horse not too far away from Tajomaru. What should be
deciphered now is, did the priest see Tajomaru, the horse and the wife or did he see Takehiko (the dead man),
the horse and the wife? Time is relative during

Death is Unpleasant, My Friend
The Litigator got what he wanted. A copper–tinted key that appealed small in his palms, yet was as heavy as a
stone. While looking at an unmarked gravestone, another man bled eternally in the six foot hole. Despite the
man's dedication to not move his palm from the wound, most of the blood had flown out of his body and into
the soil. Taking a look at the man in the grave, the Litigator caressed the left side of his stubble with the tip of
his index finger. Drips of precipitation occasionally interrupted his finger from stroking the hairs. It rained for
six days; no sunshine was seen. Moonlight was all that provided a visionary source in Portland. "Once you
enter, you will see why they are sixes and sevens." The man in the grave commented. The Litigator let out a
sudden guffaw and responded calmly with, "Your comments won't matter once you're down there forever.
Alone. Six feet under. Where nobody can here peep a word." he paused momentarily. "Death is unpleasant my
friend" The man became fearful after hearing this sad, yet true comment that his chest reacted with a small
reflex, causing goose bumps to form everywhere on his body. The Litigator reached for his black pistol in the
back pocket of his jeans. He aimed the barrel at the man's forehead. Giving a slight force on the trigger, a
bullet gusted out of the gun and penetrated into the man's forehead. Blood quickly pooled from his head. The
Litigator was not interested in staying at the cemetery for too long, so he took

Research Paper On Jerry Garcia
If I were to meet and be able to talk to anyone person living or dead, it would have to be the late Jerry Garcia.
Jerry Garcia was in a couple bands in his life time but gained most fame for his role in the band The Grateful
Dead. Unfortunately Jerry passed away in August of 1995, twenty years ago this year, but his legend will live
forever.
Jerry Garcia was born and raised in California. He played music and was recognized as being a great music
talent at a young age. His talent for writing music and his style of music defined a generation of music. My
meeting of Jerry would be more of a relaxing talk and not quite an interview. I would like to find out how he

The Grateful Dead Essay
The Grateful Dead
The Grateful Dead was a band that toured continuously for 30 years until the death of lead man Jerry Garcia.
They were known for free flowing jams and bluegrass roots. Phish is a band that has toured consistently for
the last 17 years and has in time made themselves into stealth multi–millionaires. Both are very talented
bands, who have and in the Dead's case, had, created big names for themselves. Many people make wrongful
association with these two groups of musicians. It is said that Phish is trying to be the Dead of this generation.
This statement is very untrue. Phish is not a Grateful Dead take–off. Phish and the Dead have much more

A third thing they have in common is their fans (Deadheads and Phans). The Grateful Dead and Phish have
both established quite a following. These fans follow their favorite band around the country to see their
shows(this phan has been to over 25 Phish shows). They also collect their favorite shows on cd–r or tape,
since both bands have an open taping policy at their concerts. By doing this, Phish and the Dead opened up a
new hobby; and other bands have gone along with open taping (e.g. Dave Matthews Band, Moe., Bela Fleck).
Although these two bands do similar things with their music, the music itself is considerably different. I think
the reason Phish is labeled "Children of the Dead" is because of their early years playing small gigs at Nector's
bar in Vermont. They were just starting out, and did not have enough original songs to have a complete set list.
This forced Phish to do many cover songs. Mike Gordon (bassist), the only real Dead fan in Phish coaxed his
fellow band mates to cover some Grateful Dead tunes, along with covers from other various artists and their
own originals. The Dead songs were played on very few occasions, and the songs were "Fire on the
Mountain" and "Scarlet Begonias"(commonly known as Fire*Scarlet). After a while people started calling
Phish a Grateful Dead cover band, even though they covered a few Dead

However, there was a significant differentiation between Starbucks and the independent specialty
coffeehouses. The brand image of Starbucks also had some rough edges. More customers were beginning to
agree with the fact the Starbucks cared primarily about making money and building more stores. Also, despite
the high customer snapshot scores customer satisfaction scores were declining. It was believed that there was
a service gap between Starbucks scores on key attributes and customer satisfaction. In polls by customers
"improvements to service," particularly speed of service, was most mentioned for improvement.
Has the company's service declined or is it simply measuring satisfaction the wrong way?
Customer behavior and shift in customer base are major factors for this decline in servive satisfaction. The
company didn't follow the changing trend and continued doing the same things which clearly were not
working anymore, leading to unsatisfied customers. Demographics changes means these people value other
aspects more than others. The behaviour also, as most customers visit the store only 5 times a month.
The overall company service has not necessarily declined. Overall, customers are pleased with the cleanliness,

The Figure A Poem Makes By Robert Lee Frost
Robert Lee Frost is an American poet, often called 'the voice of America' as he represents the feelings of
American people. His poetry celebrates the countryside of New Hampshire. His poems deal with familiar
native scenes. He uses simple words from the plain language of every–day life. In his work, 'The Figure a
Poem Makes' he defines "a poem begins in delight ends in wisdom''.
One of the significant features of Frost's poetry is its dramatic quality. Poems like 'Home Burial', 'The Death
of the Hired man' and 'West Running Brook' are witnesses to Frost's capacity in representing conversations in
verse form. All these poems are based on the conversation between the husband and the wife. During their
conversation there are lot of controversies ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Call Of Duty Black Ops Ad Analysis
Call of Duty: Black Ops, a high–quality game full of exhilarating and intense combat. The Call of Duty: Black
Ops ad is pretty much a mini action film with neverending gun fire and explosions, jumping from one action–
packed scene to another. However, instead of soldiers wielding assault rifles, shotguns, handheld missile
launchers, etc. there are everyday people, hinting at the title of the ad "There's a Soldier in All of Us." It was
greatly anticipated that the Call of Duty: Black Ops' commercial ad would exhibit the same qualities as the
videogame itself. The Call of Duty: Black Ops "There's a soldier in All of Us" ad uses a diverse cast, over–
the–top Hollywood–style action, and thrilling music to enforce the theme of the ad, creating a mini action
movie to appeal to the consumer's need and want to be a part of the action. The Call of Duty: Black Ops ad
certainly incorporates the slogan "There's a Soldier in All of Us" into the ad with a diverse cast. The ad uses a
cast of people of different ages, gender, social status, and cultural backgrounds dressed as regular everyday
people in place of a cast in soldier uniforms. According to David Vinjamuri (2015), "the increased diversity in
television, film and advertising is based on sound marketing principles simply put, we are more likely to

Sports Marketing: The Agent Athlete Relationship and...
Due to the nature and complexity of contracts, agents are expected to have a background in contract law and
be knowledgeable in finance, business management, financial and risk analysis, and of course, sports. In order
to be a successful sports agent one must not only be a great negotiator, but also be highly motivated, have
exceptional communication skills, be prepared to work long hours and handle multiple tasks at the same time.
An agent must be able to apply effective marketing principles. The "Four P's" of marketing are:
1. Product (or Service) – What does the athlete want from the agent? What needs does the agent satisfy?
2. Promotion– How is the agent successfully promoting the athlete?
3. Price– What value does the athlete give ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An athlete prefers the best public image possible and to obtain that image the player must only associate
themselves with individuals that are held in high regards and highly respected in the public's mind. An agent
that has participated in questionable acts could taint an athlete's image. Therefore, an athlete would want no
association with that agent
A perfect agent would be an honest and loyal agent that abides by both federal and state laws governing agent
athlete relations. An agent that will always put the athlete's interest before their own and be highly dedicated
to ensuring the athlete gets the best deal possible in every situation that arises throughout the athlete's life.
Ethical Issues
Athletes and the sports industry have turned into a multi–billion dollar business annually. Stacked on top of
that is that leagues and educational institutions receive multi–million dollar media contracts each year. This is
so that broadcasters such as NBC, FOX, and TNT have the rights to broadcast that team or leagues games. The
surge of money in the sports industry has led to an influx of agents into the world of agent athletes.
Consequently, a fierce competition for client representation has arisen due to the overcrowded nature of the
sports industry with sports agents. This competition has sparked many agents to do whatever necessary to
reach an agreement with athletes. In

Soon after, Jerry joined his first band, the Chords, solidifying his destiny as a musician. Jerry Garcia's most
obvious influences deal with music and the modern pop music band's role. He has changed the way music is
produced, the way music relates to its listeners, and how the band interacts with its fans. Jerry Garcia was the
renaissance man of the 1960's singing, writing, and playing many instruments including the acoustic, bass, and

She is known for being a solo singer, and also a very talented pianist. Soul, R&B, Jazz, and Gospel are genres

Essay on Jerry Garcia And The Grateful Dead
Jerry Garcia and The Grateful Dead
Jerome John Garcia was born in 1942, in San Francisco's Mission District.
His father, a spanish immigrant named Jose "Joe" Garcia, had been a jazz clarinetist and Dixieland
bandleader in the thirties, and he named his new son after his favorite Broadway composer, Jerome Kern. In
the spring of 1948, while on a fishing trip, Garcia saw his father swept to his death by a California river. After

He was also working part–time at Dana Morgan's Music Store, where he met several of the musicians who
would eventually dominate the San Francisco music scene. In
1963 Garcia formed a jug band, Mother McCree's Uptown Jug Champions. Its lineup included a young folk
guitarist named Bob Weir and a blues lover, Ron McKernan, known to his friends as "Pigpen" for
his often disorderly appearance. The group played a mix of blues, country, and folk, and Pigpen became the
frontman, singing Jimmy Reed and Lightnin' Hopkins tunes.
Then in February 1964, the Beatles made their historic appearance on The
Ed Sullivan Show, and virtually overnight, youth culture was imbued with a new spirit and sense of identity.
Gracia understood the group's promise after seeing its first film, A Hard Day's Night.
As a result, the folky purism of Mother McCree's all–acoustic form began to seem rather limited and
uninteresting to Garcia and many of the other band members, and before long the ensemble was transformed
into the Warlocks. A few dropped out, but they were soon joined by two more; Bill Kreutzmann, and
Phil Lesh.
It was around this time that Garcia and some of the group's other members also began an experiment with
drugs that would change the nature of the band's story. Certainly this wasn't the first time drugs had been used

In the book Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli Stargirl, the main character is a quirky teenage girl. In the middle of the
book, Stargirl started to change into a more popular girl. Stargirl stated to wear regular jeans, sandals, and t–
shirts when she only used to wear dresses. Three reasons why Stargirl should not have changed are you should
not let anyone peer pressure you to be something new, also, you should not let other people speak for you.
Lastly, you do not need other people's approval of yourself. The reason why Stargirl did change was that she
was being made fun of by other people in her school and Leo her boyfriend wanted her to change.
To elaborate on my first reason why Stargirl should not have changed, which was you should not allow people
to peer pressure to be something new, in the text it states on page 137, "The point is, in a group everybody acts
pretty much the same, that's kind of how the group holds itself together. Everybody? she said. Well, mostly, I
said. That's what jails and mental hospitals are for, to keep it that way." This evidence shows how Leo,
Stargirls boyfriend is peer pressuring Stargirl to change to become more like everyone else. In addition on
page 140, it says,"She looked Magnificent, Wonderfully, gloriously ordinary. She looked just like a hundred
other girls at Mica High Stargirl had vanished into a sea of them and I was thrilled." To add on, everyone is
unique and should feel unique. You do not have to be like everyone else, instead, you

How Is Snowball Into A Mountain Of Trouble?
It's funny how the smallest of comments can snowball into a mountain of trouble. I guess it's the silence that
really hurts the situation, beating it into a pulp of what it used to be. I have very few friends, and that can
sometimes come in handy or hurt me in unimaginable ways. Now I know that I've said some things I shouldn't
have said before, but it's usually stayed the small incident it is. There has only been one time in my life where
I have been in some deep trouble due to saying something I shouldn't have said. It all started in science class. I
was intent on finishing my work, like most other kids rushing to beat the bell. My friend, Robert, was sitting
next to me. Being a genius, he had already finished all of his work. He ... Show more content on

The class stopped their intense working and stared at me. I felt my cheeks start to burn as they all looked at
me. The teacher didn't notice my scream but did notice the absence of pencils scratching against paper. He told
everyone to get back to work, so they did. I looked to my right to apologize to Robert, but he started getting
up to leave because of the bell. I felt truly terrible. I hadn't meant what I said and shouldn't have said it, but I
still thought the whole thing would blow over in a matter of a few minutes. I couldn't have been more
incorrect. The next class was a bore, as usual. I wasn't really thinking about Robert and what I had said until I
felt a poke from behind. I heard a small hissing noise. "Psst," the mysterious entity said. I turned around to see
that it was one of my worst enemies, Dylan. "Hello, Dylan," I hissed to him not unlike Jerry Seinfeld
encountering Newman. "Hello, Fonseca," he responded in the same manner. "I heard that you were bad–
mouthing Robert, like the coward you are. I'm pretty sure I saw him taking an alternate path to class, to avoid
you." Oh man, I thought. This isn't going to end well. "Just stay away from me, Dylan," I told him. He sat
back in his chair, having accomplished his mission. "Your grave," he said. That period was the hardest I've
ever had to stand. As soon as the bell rang, I got up and sprinted to my third class. Neither Robert nor Dylan
were in this

Ben & Jerry's Data Warehouse
1. If I were to design Ben & Jerry's data warehouse I would use several dimensions of information. The
first dimension would consist of the company's products; ice cream, frozen yogurt or merchandise. The
marketing department has to know which products are selling, if Ben & Jerry's didn't know that their T–
shirts are selling out as soon as they hit the stores, then they wouldn't be able to take advantage of the
opportunity to sell the shirts. The second dimension would consist of the different areas of sales; US, Canada,
Mexico, or Europe. I am not sure if they sell their ice cream in Mexico, but with data collection they can find
out if their ice cream would be a better seller in the hot climate, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The primary key for the Store file would be the store number, or code. Some of the foreign keys would be;
delivery dates, order dates, sales, and customer complaints. The Employee files primary key would be an
employee number. The foreign keys for the Employee files would be; start date, wage, shift, employee
address, paid time off, and absences. The Product file would have a primary key of product name, for
example, Cherry Garcia. The foreign keys would be product type (ice cream/frozen yogurt), amount in stock,
amount sold, ingredients, and comments. Comments sounds like a useless bit of information, but I think it
could be one of the most useful. When it comes to a decline in ice cream sales a comment query could tell
managers exactly what flavor people really want. In the case Ben & Jerry's received a large number of
complaints that it's Cherry Garcia ice cream didn't have enough cherries in it. Using the business intelligence
with Business Objects helped them discover a problem with their packaging, and solve the problem.
3. What is the question that any business should be asking itself? How do we cut costs? Using business
intelligence, Ben & Jerry's can look at how they can cut costs. From a financial perspective we could run
a query to see what it costs to make the top 5 selling flavors, once

Similarities Between Scarlet Begonias And Fire On The...

  • 1. Similarities Between Scarlet Begonias And Fire On The... Scarlet Begonias/Fire on the Mountain Essay Michael Peller has been a fan of the Grateful Dead for as long as he can remember. As a child, he listened to their albums on cassette tapes in the car, and as a college student, he attended live performances. The Grateful Dead debuted in 1965 in Palo Alto, CA. It was known for its eclectic, psychedelic rock style, which was sculpted amid the San Franciscan countercultural movement of the 1960s. The movement gained speed alongside the civil rights movement and hippie culture. The Grateful Dead embraced these new beliefs in their songwriting, rejecting common structure by adopting the "jam" genre, which is based off of live improvisation. Mike's favorite Grateful Dead songs, "Scarlet Begonias" and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, the parts of the song that most affected Mike Peller were the allusions to and imagery of the 70s. The song's story follows a young man, walking around the local square, who is entranced by a young woman with "scarlet begonias tucked into her curls" (Grateful Dead). She also had "rings on her fingers and bells on her shoes," a line that has stuck with Mike because of how the image reminds him of the 70s, and as an extension, the ideas of freedom and being carefree. Mike doesn't have much of an opinion about the lyrics of "Fire on the Mountain", but he does love the rhythm and the bass guitar because "it just makes anybody want to dance" (Michael Peller). However, I found the lyrics to be meaningful in ways related to Mike's enjoyment of the song. The line, "fire, fire on the mountain", is repeated throughout the song, and almost sounds like an urgent call for help. Despite this, the beat and music rolls on. The song pokes fun at a "long distance runner" who continues to make and dance to music even as "a dragon with matches" is "loose on the town". But when fans dance to the music live at a concert, the lyrics take on a different meaning: on how even as everything is burning down, the fans keep dancing and the Grateful Dead keeps ... • 3. Communication In Maniac Mageee In the book, Maniac Magee, Jerry Spinelli uses descriptive details, dialogue, actions, and thoughts to develop one of the main characters, Amanda Beal. I am Amanda Beale. I like to communicate. I personally think I am very good at it. I have three brothers one sister. I love books especially encyclopedias. I hope that you will let me teach at John T Baker Middle School. One quality that I have that would be good for this job is being able to communicate well. For one I communicate well with others. I speak with confidence and reason, depending on how the person is acting or the situation. For example once I had to say this to a person that was being a bully "I got a little brother and a little sister that crayon all over my books, and I got a dog that eats them and poops on them and that's just inside my own family, and I'm not gonna have nobody else messing with my books!" Even though I am clearly mad in this case I still spoke with confidence I spoke clearly and I had evidence for the situation I was in. Another example of me being communicating well is once I found my friend Maniac is a buffalo pen at the zoo late at night in the west side of town. I had to convince him to come home. This is what I told him " you do not have a choice. I am not asking you. I'm telling you. You are coming home with me, and you are going to sleep in my room, which is going to be your room– and I don't care if you sleep on the floor or the windowsill or what–but you are going to sleep there and not here." As you can see I am talking to Maniac about the fact that he will come with me and that he will not sleep in the buffalo pen. I spoke clearly stated my claim and told him what needed to be done. His shows that if I need something to get done I will communicate with the person. Finally I think I'm communicative because in my life I have probably gone through many stages. One of these stages was taking baths with my brothers. When I finally grew out of it I had to tell them, communicate with them. This is what happened " Then came a day when Amanda entered fourth grade, and she decided she was getting too old to tub it with her little brother and sister." This shows that Amanda decided to communicate with her ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Stand By Me (movie Review For Small Group Com) Essay A Summer To Remember The movie Stand By Me is based upon a novel by Steven King. It doesn't have the same eerie feel as some of his other books and is generally a more serious movie. It takes place in the small town of Castle Rock, Oregon. It is the middle of the summer in approximately the early 1960's. The kids are bored and that is the setup for their adventure to go find a dead body in the woods. The main role of Gordie LaChance is played by Wil Wheaton. He is having trouble in his life at this time because he just lost his brother and his parents are having a very difficult time dealing with it. Chris Chambers was played by River Phoenix. Chris is considered a loser ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Vern whines that it means they are all doomed and should go back. Vern also slows the group when he refuses to go into the woods away from the tracks towards the trail. He then plays the role of backseat driver (class notes) when they reach the swamp saying, "I told you we should have kept following the train tracks". Vern hindered the development of the group. While they could have been devoting time to the task at hand, they had to spend time helping him with trivial things like dealing with him being scared when they are in the woods. While Vern slowed the group by challenging many of the group's ideas, Teddy presented a much different challenge to the group. Teddy is described in the beginning as being reckless and wild. He holds to that description right in the beginning with two crazy incidents. When they leave in the beginning and are walking on the train tracks, Teddy goes a little bit nuts and says he is going to dodge the train. It takes the entire group to pull him away from the train tracks before the train comes. Teddy also becomes difficult when the run away from the old man in the junkyard. When the old man calls his father "looney" Teddy flips out. He starts kicking and punching even though he's on the other side of the fence. This remains a problem with the group because they have to spend time comforting him before they get back on the road again. On more then one occasion Teddy got in small fights with almost ... • 7. The Most Famous Guitar Players For Find Success At Fame One of the more famous guitar players to find success at FAME was Duane Allman. In September of 1968, Allman went to visit Hall, with the hopes of joining FAME as a studio musician. Hall remembered that Allman "was a huge fan of the things I was doing – Jimmy Hughes, Arthur Alexander, Clarence Carter, Joe Tex. He knew about all the records I was cutting and was heavy into black music." However, at the time, Hall did not need another guitar player. This did not scourge Allman and he stayed in the Shoals, waiting for his chance. When Duane finally did get the chance to play for Rick Hall, he made a lasting first impression "One day we were doing a demo and he had his bottleneck," says Hall. "To be honest with you, I hadn't saw many ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The day Johnson and the other section member informed Hall of their plans, Hall signed a million–dollar contract with Capitol Records to produce artists on FAME's record label. Hall offered each of the section members a base salary of $10,000 a year to become FAME's exclusive band, but they earned nearly double that figure the year before and could not justify signing Hall's offer. Johnson remembers that Hall had "been up all night, but I thought he reacted good under the circumstances. He did tell us, 'I would do the same thing, but you'll never make it.'" Hall immediately started looking for other local musicians and found Junior Lowe on guitar, Jesse Boyce on bass, Freeman Brown on drums, and Clayton Ivey on keyboards. They became known as the "Fame Gang." Over the years Hall would bring new musicians into the Fame Gang. Linda Hall states, "There was always a different set of musicians trying to get started, they weren't as good as the ones Rick used all the time, but he just called these guys in and developed his new rhythm section. He had done this at least four or five times. A studio musician has to be very motivated, creative type person." On April 12, 1969, Billboard announced the new FAME and Capitol Records partnership. • 9. A Short Story : A Story? Motioning toward the sofa, Detective Johnson said, "Maybe you should have a seat." Sitting on the sofa, Marlene said, "Okay, what happened." "A neighbor found a body this morning and called 911. She identified the woman as Katherine Lincoln. She gave us your name, address and said Mrs. Lincoln was your mother. Is that correct?" Shocked, Marlene said, "Katherine is my mother, but you're wrong. Mom isn't dead. I saw her last night, and she was all right." "They pronounced her dead at the scene," Detective Johnson said. "I don't believe it was my mother." According to the picture on the Connecticut driver's license, we found in the house the deceased woman was Katherine Lincoln," Detective Wallace said. "It can't be my mother," Marlene said, struggling to maintain her composure without arguing with the detectives. "If it's Mom, my friend, Jennifer will know. She works in the coroner's office. I need to call her," she said, removing her phone, and called her friend. Marlene, asked, "Jennifer, did they bring mom to the morgue?" Dropping the phone onto the floor, Marlene fell backward and screamed, "They just brought her in. What happened?" "They won't know what happened until they complete the investigation," Jennifer said. "Did you find the murder weapon?" Marlene asked. "We think we found the murder weapon, a statue was found in a trash can," Detective Wallace said, wondering why she would ask such a question. • 11. The Argument For The Elimination Of Television Approximately twenty five billion dollars is spent on advertising a year, a number far greater than the amount spent on education nationally. Why so much money? Jerry Mander in his book Four Arguments for the Elimination of Television, lays out the numerous problems that exist with television, a problem that cannot necessarily be improved. In essence, technology is not a tool that is neutral. Mander describes that in different institutions and technologies, such as advertising, mass production, militaries, the basic structure of particular technology or institution establishes its influence on the world, the types of individuals that will make use of it, and how people will use it. Television is a tool that established the kinds of effects it will have on peoples lives, how people will use it, and who will use it, and if such technology continues to be used, the kinds of effects and political forms that will result from it. Mander develops four arguments throughout his book. The first argument Mander describes is that television conditions people to accept another person's authority. He begins by explaining that although television might be interesting and useful it packs people into a mental as well as a physical condition suitable for the appearance of autocratic control. Artificial environments, therefore, strip individuals of obtaining direct knowledge of nature. He follows his second argument by stating that technological advances are controlled by the "powers that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Essay on The Popularity of Seinfeld The Popularity of Seinfeld Add a dash Elaine, a spoonful of Jerry, a pinch of George, and handful of Kramer and you end up with a perfectly seasoned spicy sitcom that Americans just can not get enough of. Seinfeld, featuring the hilarious stand up comedian Jerry Seinfeld himself, is dear to many of our hearts and the show plays an essential part in satisfying our constant quest for humor. The show focuses on real life situations and problems such as romance, friends, careers, and adventures that everyone can relate to. I believe that Seinfeld is attractive to most people for a variety of reasons. For these reasons the shows success was inevitable. Each of the characters has it's own unique personality and by using this formula ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Jerry's contribution to the fearsome four is as important as the peanut butter in a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. It's great by itself, but even better with its complements. His character appeals to the sensible and laid back audience because they can relate. However, the complete opposite types swoon over him because they envy the qualities that they would like to possess. I would have to say that Jerry is mostly responsible for the shows immediate fame and without him Seinfeld just wouldn't be Seinfeld. Jason Alexander, who plays George, has a unique combination of traits that make him irresistibly hilarious. He pulls off the sympathetic and charming sort while other times he's purely devious and radical. He plays Jerry's sidekick and together they foolishly run around New York City like kids in a candy store. Jason also has his share of accomplishments such as two Emmy nominations, a Golden Globe nomination and two American Comedy Awards for best supporting actor in a television series. George portrays the baldheaded stingy mastermind who's always stirring up trouble and brewing up schemes to make him look cooler than we all know he really is. His tendency to become easily red faced and throw random tantrums captures viewer's attention. Because of George's love/hate relationship with his friends he is always a focal point for the show. In The Superman Chronicles, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster do the opposite by using closure to take a surreal being and place him into the real world of the readers to show how alien Superman is to planet Earth. For clarity, closure is defined in Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics as, "Observing the parts but perceiving the whole." Simply put, closure in comics allows the reader to become an active participant in the story. This participation allows the reader to become fully immersed in the world of the characters which leads to an experiential connection between the reader and the character. In order to understand how real and surreal are to be interpreted in this paper, they must be defined. The Merriam–Webster Dictionary defines surreal as, "marked by the intense irrational reality of a dream," and defines real as, "not artificial, fraudulent, or illusory...occurring or existing in actuality." The creators devise diametric plots, but the use of closure as a mechanism to create the immersive worlds in which their readers and characters coexist are nearly the same. Frank King and Siegel & Shuster both use closure as a vehicle to convey the concept that their respective characters are living representations of the opposition between real and surreal, this is evident in ... • 19. Grateful Dead Essay Throughout history there have been many musical "influences". One extremely important influence to modern music is The Grateful Dead. The group was formed in 1965 by bluegrass – enthusiast Jerry Garcia on guitar and vocals, Ron "Pigpen" McKernan on vocals and organ, Bob Weir on guitar and vocals, classical music student Phil Lesh on bass and vocals, and Bill Kreutzmann on drums. From the beginning, they brought together a variety of influences, from Garcia's country background to Pigpen's feeling for blues (his father was an R&B radio DJ) and Lesh's education in contemporary serious" music. Add to that, the experimentation encouraged at some of the group's first performances at novelist Ken Kesey's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Grisman is a still a renowned mandolinist, but while with Garcia, they both explored the bluegrass scene. This was Jerry's "foundation" for his musical contributions to the Grateful Dead. Without Jerry's influence, the Grateful Dead would not have it's distinct earthy timbre or feel that has been extremely significant in attracting their particular following. Another contribution to the Dead's style was bassist Phil Lesh. With only formal jazz training on the trumpet, Lesh picked up a bass and learned as he went while playing with the Grateful Dead's then nucleus, The Warlocks. Lesh is famous for his jazz improvisational style. This particular style usually finds his fingers running up and down the neck of a five or six string bass (seen right), dropping what are affectionately known to fans as "Phil Bombs", furiously low frequency notes that tend to rumble in auditoriums and can only be created with a five or six string bass. As one can well imagine, these two aforementioned styles together could create somewhat of an interesting style. Well, it only gets better. Bill Kreutzmann, the "heartbeat" of the Grateful Dead, had been behind a kit since the age of eleven when Jerry Garcia met him in 1962. His early love of drums allowed him to be heavily involved in the "rock and roll" scene. As a teen, Kreutzmann even created rock in roll bands in which to play, as the interest was barely there. Also, he is not being very sympathetic of what this man's condition that he lives with is, being blind. The Narrator must learn to be more sympathetic in his life, and should learn from this experience, with this older bling man. Raymond Carver uses his narrator non–sympathetic ways effectively throughout the story, developing of the narrator from the beginning to the end, and how the narrator would not be as effective if he showed sympathy throughout the short story. The narrator fails to show sympathy throughout the story to show that the man not judge him for what he is, to show the "Its really something" moment, and to show the problems of the couple underneath what is happening. First, Carver uses his non–sympathetic narrator effectively throughout the short story, by showing that the blind man can see more than him sometimes. The narrator says from the beginning that he does not like how this blind man is coming to visit him and his wife. He knows that that the blind man and his wife have had known each other longer than the two of them have known each other. Instead of welcoming his wife's old friend, he categorizes her friend with her past. Showing the narrator is jealous and pity, which then makes you wonder if Robert, the blind man, was involved in her suicide attempt or her divorce. This explains how Robert would have a better ... Before the field trip, I had a few thoughts/assumptions/beliefs about Americans such as I thought Americans were more hostile and reserved, they usually keep to themselves. • 27. Summary OfThe Yellow Pill Short Story Sanity is in the mind of the beholder; one man's reality may not be the reality of everyone. This becomes a sticking point when two men meet in either a psychiatrist's office or in the depth of space in the short story "The Yellow Pill." Since both men cannot be in reality, the story takes place in a comfortable office based on evidence from the story. Throughout the story, Mr. Elton talks with Gerald Bocek in his office about the details of Jerry's crime. It is at the end of each conversation they have in the office that proves them to be on Earth. Mr. Elton tells the police officers to take Gerald out of his office and back to the mental ward. For example, after their first conversation Mr. Elton says, "All right, take him away. Bring him back the same time tomorrow." The two officers pushed him firmly toward the door. The officers taking Gerald out of his office every time they talk shows that they are on Earth and not in space. Gerald would die immediately if he was taken outside of a spaceship, because of the lack of atmospheric pressure and oxygen. Gerald also comes back into Mr. Elton's office each day which means he couldn't have died in space, which would be caused from leaving a spaceship every time Mr. Elton and him talk. In the story Mr. Elton is discussing the problems about Gerald Bocek with Helena, but before they had started talking Gerald had told Mr. Elton to take a pill and that nothing bad would happen. During Mr. Elton's conversation with Helena he says, "I took one three years ago when they first became available. You'd be surprised how little you actually see of what you look at, especially of people. You look at symbols instead. I had to cancel my appointments for a week." Mr. Elton is proving that the pills blurred his sense of reality. This shows that the pills cause hallucination and the reality Gerald is living in is a messed up reality, furthering the argument for why they are on Earth. Towards the end of the story after Mr. Elton has taken the yellow pill and Gerald ejected himself from what they considered the airlock. When Gerald had ejected himself it is described as, "Jerry's chest quickly expanded, then collapsed as a mixture of phlegm and blood dribbled from his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I sang in the choir at church and school. I also played the trumpet all through middle school, I was even first chair in eighth grade. Once I was in high school, attending concerts became a regular outing for me and my friends. I have continued to keep music in my life to this day. The first period of my life represented is early childhood. I honestly could not think of one song I may have loved between ages 0 to 4. Any music that I would have listened to would have been what my parents liked at the time. I decided to look up hit songs for the year I was 4 years old. Looking through the list I remembered that I loved Chicago's song "Saturday in the Park". Every summer we traveled to Maine growing up to visit my Grandma, and this song was my favorite. I specifically remember playing in the garage and listening to this song over and over again. Every time I hear this song I think of Summer and all the fun I had growing up. It was released in 1972, but was still popular when I was in this time period. I still love it. The second period of my life represented is elementary school. I loved Bonnie Tyler's "Total Eclipse of the Heart". These were the days of listening to the top forty with Casey Kasem on Saturday morning and taping songs you liked. • 31. Stargirl Character Analysis The book Stargirl, written by Jerry Spinelli, is about a girl named Stargirl Caraway. Stargirl recently enrolled in a new high school after being previously homeschooled. She was different from the other students in several ways. Stargirl wore different outfits and acted differently from the other kids. She plays her ukulele at lunch and she is nice to everyone despite not receiving the same treatment from the other kids. After amusing behavior at a football game, Stargirl becomes a cheerleader and is the most popular girl in school. However, Stargirl was cheering for the opposing team during basketball season, the student body turned on her. After some time during the school year, the student body accepted Stargirl for who she was after the dance. Throughout the story, Stargirl was treated too harshly by the other students from the first few months of school when everything about her was being judged and through her acceptance, eventual rejection, of her by the students. Stargirl came into the school welcoming to her new community. Her niceness was surprising to the other students. "In the hallways, she said hello to perfect strangers. The seniors couldn't believe it. They had never seen a tenth–grader so bold." (Spinelli 10). Her boldness was also demonstrated by her participation in class where she made up songs, asked questions that were different than the subject matter being taught, sang happy birthday to people in the lunchroom and veering off track on the cross country team. "We did not know what to make of her. In our minds we tried to pin her a corkboard like a butterfly, but the pin merely went through and away she flew." (Spinelli 15). The activity in which Stargirl began to showcase her personality was cheerleading. What started out as a joke to the community with her crazy dancing and cheers led to Stargirl becoming a cheerleader for the football and basketball teams. "The change began around Thanksgiving. By December first, Stargirl Caraway had become the most popular girl in school. How did it happen? Was it the cheerleading?" (Spinelli 36). Up to this point, the students went from questioning Stargirl's differences to accepting them in three months. Stargirl was quickly ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Any good therefore, that I can do or any kindness that I can show to any human being, let me do it now. Let me not differ nor neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again" (TOJLCMS, 5). For Jerry Lewis, this was a common outlook he had. Jerry has devoted his life to entertaining others and putting a smile on their faces. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In a traditional point of view, humans are "above" animals, but the ability of the merchant to understand the animals defies the traditional hierarchy. This decentralization of the relationship between a human and an animal is significant in the fact that the words of a rooster end up influencing the actions of a person (the merchant). The rooster represents the traditional patriarchal concept of male "superiority" over female since he discusses a stern piece of advice with a dog, after he "jumped on a hen and, finishing with her, jumped down and jumped on another" (Haddawy, 19), displaying a behavior of control and disrespect over the opposite sex. The rooster indirectly advises the merchant, through his conversation with the dog, to "fall on her" (referring to the merchant´s wife) (19) and beat her with an oak branch until she has no desire to question her husband´s actions. The merchant heeds the words of the rooster, and reestablishes the hierarchy of male over female dominance by using impulsive and violent animal like brutality. Yet, the hierarchy of human–reason dominance over animalistic behavior was diminished after the merchant followed the advice of his cock. The Tale of the Merchant and the Demon also explores changes of hierarchies related to the crossing of human– animal border. Motivational bias, where people sees what he wants to see, (1) is the first topic we will cover about Tom Cruise. During the filming of the movie "Mummy" which was originally scripted as a horror & thriller movie, the leading star Mr. Cruise decided to take over and change the script to more of an action movie because he personally thought the movie would be not only better but more successful. Another concept that goes hand in hand with motivational bias is our next topic about Self–fulfilling prophecy, a prediction that becomes true (2). The Mummy, unfortunately was a box office flop. Tom Cruise predicted that if he made all these changes to the script and increased the movies spending budget that it would be successful, but that not ended up being the case. Scientology is popular amongst the celebrities but Tom Cruise without a doubt has made it abundantly clear about his connections with the church and this is where our third concept comes into play of the route of persuasion. To put it simply, there is a real truth between hundreds of layers of manufactured truth. The truth I may know at a moment in time will be altered if a second point of view is added to my truth; the truth is therefore an illusion. What one person may regard as the truth is different from what another may believe and that is because we absorb specific moments of time based on what we think is important and that is how memories and truths are created or dare I say, manufactured. In relation to the short story "In a Grove" by Akutagawa, you can clearly observe this phenomena, as I choose to call it, occur. The bandit, wife, samurai and witnesses have all chosen to absorb specific moments of this event. The question I place forward is, is this deliberate or unintentional? Or is this an effect of cognitive biases? The policeman admitted to arresting Tajomaru (the bandit) and attested to seeing a horse not too far away from Tajomaru. Despite the man's dedication to not move his palm from the wound, most of the blood had flown out of his body and into the soil. Taking a look at the man in the grave, the Litigator caressed the left side of his stubble with the tip of his index finger. Drips of precipitation occasionally interrupted his finger from stroking the hairs. It rained for six days; no sunshine was seen. Moonlight was all that provided a visionary source in Portland. They were known for free flowing jams and bluegrass roots. Phish is a band that has toured consistently for the last 17 years and has in time made themselves into stealth multi–millionaires. Both are very talented bands, who have and in the Dead's case, had, created big names for themselves. Many people make wrongful association with these two groups of musicians. It is said that Phish is trying to be the Dead of this generation. This statement is very untrue. Phish is not a Grateful Dead take–off. A third thing they have in common is their fans (Deadheads and Phans). The Grateful Dead and Phish have both established quite a following. These fans follow their favorite band around the country to see their shows(this phan has been to over 25 Phish shows). They also collect their favorite shows on cd–r or tape, since both bands have an open taping policy at their concerts. By doing this, Phish and the Dead opened up a new hobby; and other bands have gone along with open taping (e.g. Dave Matthews Band, Moe., Bela Fleck). Although these two bands do similar things with their music, the music itself is considerably different. I think the reason Phish is labeled "Children of the Dead" is because of their early years playing small gigs at Nector's bar in Vermont. They were just starting out, and did not have enough original songs to have a complete set list. This forced Phish to do many cover songs. Mike Gordon (bassist), the only real Dead fan in Phish coaxed his fellow band mates to cover some Grateful Dead tunes, along with covers from other various artists and their own originals. The Dead songs were played on very few occasions, and the songs were "Fire on the Mountain" and "Scarlet Begonias"(commonly known as Fire*Scarlet). The brand image of Starbucks also had some rough edges. More customers were beginning to agree with the fact the Starbucks cared primarily about making money and building more stores. Also, despite the high customer snapshot scores customer satisfaction scores were declining. It was believed that there was a service gap between Starbucks scores on key attributes and customer satisfaction. In polls by customers "improvements to service," particularly speed of service, was most mentioned for improvement. Has the company's service declined or is it simply measuring satisfaction the wrong way? Customer behavior and shift in customer base are major factors for this decline in servive satisfaction. The company didn't follow the changing trend and continued doing the same things which clearly were not working anymore, leading to unsatisfied customers. In his work, 'The Figure a Poem Makes' he defines "a poem begins in delight ends in wisdom''. One of the significant features of Frost's poetry is its dramatic quality. The Call of Duty: Black Ops ad is pretty much a mini action film with neverending gun fire and explosions, jumping from one action– packed scene to another. However, instead of soldiers wielding assault rifles, shotguns, handheld missile launchers, etc. there are everyday people, hinting at the title of the ad "There's a Soldier in All of Us." It was greatly anticipated that the Call of Duty: Black Ops' commercial ad would exhibit the same qualities as the videogame itself. The Call of Duty: Black Ops "There's a soldier in All of Us" ad uses a diverse cast, over– the–top Hollywood–style action, and thrilling music to enforce the theme of the ad, creating a mini action movie to appeal to the consumer's need and want to be a part of the action. Its lineup included a young folk guitarist named Bob Weir and a blues lover, Ron McKernan, known to his friends as "Pigpen" for his often disorderly appearance. The group played a mix of blues, country, and folk, and Pigpen became the frontman, singing Jimmy Reed and Lightnin' Hopkins tunes. Then in February 1964, the Beatles made their historic appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, and virtually overnight, youth culture was imbued with a new spirit and sense of identity. Gracia understood the group's promise after seeing its first film, A Hard Day's Night. As a result, the folky purism of Mother McCree's all–acoustic form began to seem rather limited and uninteresting to Garcia and many of the other band members, and before long the ensemble was transformed into the Warlocks. In the middle of the book, Stargirl started to change into a more popular girl. Stargirl stated to wear regular jeans, sandals, and t– shirts when she only used to wear dresses. Three reasons why Stargirl should not have changed are you should not let anyone peer pressure you to be something new, also, you should not let other people speak for you. Lastly, you do not need other people's approval of yourself. The reason why Stargirl did change was that she was being made fun of by other people in her school and Leo her boyfriend wanted her to change. To elaborate on my first reason why Stargirl should not have changed, which was you should not allow people to peer pressure to be something new, in the text it states on page 137, "The point is, in a group everybody acts pretty much the same, that's kind of how the group holds itself together.
