2. Exploration:
Setting up of standards
1.Listen very carefully when your teaching is talking.
2.Do your work cooperatively.
3.Be extra careful in doing the activity.
4.Work harmoniously with your group
4.Clean your area after the activity.
4. Activity proper.
•Our activity this afternoon is to
• * Describe how heat is transferred through liquid
materials.
*What you need
A.at least 5 mongo seeds
B.Laboratory thermometer(alcohol thermometer)
C.small casserole or tansparent cooking ware
D.small electric stove/firewood and tripod
E.Water
5. Exploration
What to do:LM,p.187-188
1.Half fill a casserole with water.
2.Set up the thermometer in the casserole with a clamp and
iron stand as shown in the illustration in your Lm.
3.Get the initial temperature of the water using laboratory
thermometer. Record your observation on your Science
Activity notebook.
4.Put at least five pieces mongo seeds in the water .
6. 5.Put the casserole with water over a stove.
6.While the water is being heated, get the
temperature of the water every minute.Do this for
about five minutes or five times.Record the readings
in your Science Activity Notebook
7.Observe the movement of the mongo seeds in the
casserole when the water starts to boil.
Record your observation in your Science Activity
Notebook.
7. 8.Make a graph of your temperature
readings.Predict what will happen to the
temperature of the water if you continue
heating it using the data that you have
collected.
8. Guide Questions:Lm,p.190
•1.What happens to the temperature of the water
after three minutes.
•2.What do you notice about the movement of the
mongo seeds in the casserole
•3.What could you infer about the temperature of
the water based on the graph that you created?
9. Explaination
1.What happens to the
temperature of the water after
three minutes?
Answer: The temperature of the
water rises.
10. 2.What do you notice about the movement
of the mongo seeds in the casserole?
•Answer:The mongo seeds seem
to dance and move in random
circular manner.
11. As the water at the bottom of the casserole get
heated, the temperature rises. The heat coming
from the water at the bottom of the casserole
was passed on to the rest of the water in the
container. The random motion of the mongo
seeds illustrates the heat that is being
transferred.
12. Remember these:LM,p.190
•CONVECTION is the heat transfer of heat from one
place to another by movement of fluids. Fluids include
liquids and gases.Convection involves the motion of
fluids in currents. When water is heated in the
kettle/casserole,the molecules at the bottom gets heated
first. The heated molecules move and rise pushing the top
molecules.which are cold,to the bottom,and move up.
13. •The colder molecules sink, get heated at the bottom
,move up.Warm fluids rises amd cold fluid sinks
forming currents.This movement continues until
the fluid is evenly heated and you see bubbles
forming.
•This is also true with winds and breezes.Warm air
rises and expands and cols.Cool air
sinks.Convection is the reason why we have wind
movements and local breezes.
14. •During day time,air over the land is heated.It
rises and expands.Cool air over the sea move
towards the land. That’s why you feel a
refreshing breeze by the seaside during
daytime.
Editor's Notes
Before the activity you should :_
Setting up of standards.
1.Group students into 3/Reading of rubrics.
Note pupils will be provided with LM for their reference.
Note pupils should be given/provided with manila paper and pentel pen for their reporting.Since we don’t have a stove.we will only have the firewood and stone.
Each Group wiil report their output.
Giving of Feedback.
