IRA JANE P. RONQUILLO READING AND WRITING
ALYSSA JANE CABUÑAG PROF. XAVIER AQUINO VELASCO
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
What is description?
 In composition, description is a rhetorical
strategy using sensory details to portray a
person, place or thing.
 It is used in many different types of non-
fiction including essays, biographies,
memoirs, nature writing, profiles, speech
writing and travel writing.
Instead of saying a HOUSE.
 We say that the lime green paint and pale
Greek columns.
It helps us to visualize what is the image of
the house.
Examples of description
Instead of saying a SUNSET.
 We say that the sunset filled the entire
sky with the deep color of rubies,
setting the cloud ablaze.
The writer describe it to be more
specific and let us visualize the image
of the scenery.
1. Select specific subject.
2. Pay attention to the selection of the
important details.
3. Organized details carefully.
4. Use descriptive word to eliminate
ambiguity.
5. Make a clear conclusion.
6. Use relevant language.
7. Organize the information properly.

Characteristic of
Description
Introduction
> That is where the author briefly introduces
the subject or the object of the essay.
Introduction has to be written in an engaging
manner to draw readers’ attention and convince
them read further rather than switch to
something else.
The components of Descriptive
Essay Format
Main Body
> The subject or object of descriptive essay
is further explored and explained in detail in
the body of the essay. The author can describe
every particular aspect of the subject/object
depending on what he/she considers
important. Usually, writers use a great variety
of adjectives and adverbs to make the paper
colorful, lively, and interesting to read.
Conclusion
> It is the last but not least important
component of a descriptive essay. In this
part, the author provides his own thoughts
and conclusion of the subject or object of
the essay, which depends greatly on
author’s writing style, imagination, and
analytical skills.
To make scenes realistic and memorable
To help readers experience an emotion
To share your feelings more clearly
To bring characters to life
To convey key ideas, especially complex
ones
To help readers feel like they're on the scene
You can use descriptive writing in
the following ways:
◊ Carefully selected descriptive details can
establish your characters and settings
quickly and efficiently.
◊ Description can make the reader feel like
they are part of the story.
Advantage of Description
◊ A narrative tells a story about
an event, while description
creates a picture of a person,
place, things or event for the
reader.
Difference Between
Description and Narration
◊ A narrative writing uses first
person point of view and using
words like “I” and “me”, while
description do not.
o It helps the readers grasp emotions,
feelings, and characters.
o Effective descriptive writing helps
explain and persuade.
Importance of Descriptive writing
A. Write a one description paragraph of each of the following:
1. Amusement park
2. School
3. House
4. Playground
5. Garden
B. Question and Answer
1. Why in description, we cannot use general words on
describing a person or things?
2. In literature, why it is more effective to use descriptive
writing?
