  1. 1. Roald Dahl is considered one of the greatest storytellers for children of the 20th century
  2. 2. Roald Dahl was named after the Norwegian polar explorer Roald Amundsen
  3. 3. Dahl was exceptionally tall. He was 1.98 m in adult life
  4. 4. At school he excelled in sports. He was captain of the school fives and squash teams. He also played in football teams. FIVES It is an English sport. In fives a ball is hit against the walls of a special court using a gloved or bare hand
  5. 5. During his years at Repton School, Cadbury, the chocolate company, would occasionally send boxes of new chocolates to the school to be tested by the pupils
  6. 6. Dahl would dream of a chocolate bar that would win the praise of Mr Cadbury himself
  7. 7. This was the inspiration for his children’s book ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’(1964)
  8. 8. He served as a fighter pilot in the British Royal Air Force during the World War Two
  9. 9. Roald Dahl died on 23 November 1990, at the age of 74. He was buried in Great Missenden Buckinghamshire, England
  10. 10. Sets of stamps have been issued featuring Quentin Blake’s original illustrations of Dahl’s books.
  11. 11. In 2002 Cardiff’s Oval Basin Plaza was renamed ‘Roald Dahl Plass’. Plass is the Norwegian word for place or square
  12. 12. In June 2005, The Roald Dahl Museum and Story Center in the author’s home village Great Missenden was officially opened MUSEUM
