1. I value intelligence and creativity, and I try to foster those qualities in myself.
2. Intelligence is an outcome of the habits of reading, writing, and thinking, activities that I
engaged in regularly from a young age.
3. According to Merriam Webster, intelligence is “the ability to learn or understand or to
deal with new or trying situations.” I believe that ability is developed through practice.
4. To demonstrate my success at developing and nurturing my intelligence, I can point to my
experience in graduate school, where I ultimately graduated Summa Cum Laude.
5. I am a first-generation college student, and when I found myself in graduate school, I was
concerned that I couldn’t compete with other PhD candidates. I had a lot to learn both in
my academic courses, and in navigating this very stressful “trying situation.” My familial
experience had not prepared me for these challenges, yet my ability to think on my feet
never let me down. I am proud of my accomplishments
