Signs, Symbols and Signals of the Underground Railroad Essay
Signs, Symbols and Signals of the Underground Railroad
A journey of hundreds of miles lies before you, through swamp, forest and mountain pass. Your
supplies are meager, only what can be comfortably carried so as not to slow your progress to the
Promised Land – Canada. The stars and coded messages for guidance, you set out through the night,
the path illuminated by the intermittent flash of lightning. Without a map and no real knowledge of
the surrounding area, your mind races before you and behind you all at once. Was that the barking of
the slavecatchers' dogs behind you or just the pounding rain and thunder? Does each step bring you
closer to freedom or failure? The Underground Railroad was an escape network of small, ... Show

Mr. Still was unusual in that he kept careful, written records of those he assisted, including short
biographies on some, which he published in 1872. Mr. Still often employed railroad metaphors in
his writing. The following example illustrates the way messages were encoded so that only those
active in the railroad would fully understand their meaning, even if intercepted by outsiders:
"I have sent via a two o'clock four large and two small hams," which indicated that four adults and
two children were being sent by train from Harrisburg to Philadelphia." (Wikipedia, Underground
Railroad)
The use of the word via was to indicate that they were not sent on a regular locomotive, but via
Reading, PA. In this case the authorities went to the train station in Philadelphia with the hopes of
intercepting the fugitives, allowing Still's agent to meet them in Reading and escort them to safety.
Some preachers, friends of the cause, were said to have encoded their sermons to inform select
parishioners of the arrival and departure of fugitives over the course of the coming week. Some
wore a specific colored handkerchief in their pocket to indicate a meeting to be held or impending
arrival of fugitives. As a matter of necessity, stationmasters were accustomed to knocks on their
doors or windows at odd hours of the night. The response to the question of "Who's there?" was

Talent Mr Ripley Analysis
In the film 'The Talented Mr. Ripley' directed by Anthony Minghella there are four aspects in the last
scene of Peter's death, used by the director that impacts the audience by making them feel sorry for
Tom. The four aspects I feel impacted the audience the most are dialogue, non–diegetic music,
voiceover and symbols and motifs.
The first aspect is dialogue. An example of dialogue is when Tom says "I'm going to be stuck in the
basement aren't I. aren't I. That's my... terrible and alone and dark". This is when Tom realizes he is
never going to get away from his past and that he will never have his happily ever after because he
is stuck in all this metaphorical darkness which causes him to kill peter even though he loves him.
We know that he thinks this because earlier in the film Tom mentions a metaphorical basement
where all his dark thoughts and secrets are kept and he is saying in the dialogue that he is going to
be stuck in there. This scene impacts the audience significantly well because in the scene before the
director had made it seem that Tom and Peter were going to have a life together. But in this scene,
the director puts in this dialogue to make Tom realize he cannot have the life that he wanted because
of the bad choices he had made for example killing to other people and stealing an identity. Also this
dialogue is aimed toward Peter so Tom can show his feelings that he has not discussed with anyone
else, but also this dialogue has Tom make up his mind about

Racial Controversy Surrounding the Assassination of...
The Racial Controversy Surrounding the Assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. The impact of
Martin Luther King, Jr. today is no doubt revered. He is commonly called the "Father of Civil
Rights," and is looked upon as a national icon, in an almost presidential–type light. His
achievements have not only begat a national holiday for his birthday, but also helped lead to the
creation of Black History Month. However, his accomplishments were not so regaled in his own
time. In fact, most Caucasian Americans refused to even recognize any ban or barrier he and his
cohorts attempted to change. African–Americans were just simply not respected by most whites in
the 1950s and 1960s because they were considered "inferior." This ... Show more content on

The MIA's boycott lasted over a year, but finally, in early 1957, Montgomery's buses were
desegregated. This was, on many levels, the first large–scale stand taken to end segregation in the
South. ("Martin Luther King, Jr." 1) King went on to form the Southern Christian Leadership
Conference in 1960, which gave him a base of operation and a national platform to speak. King
began to travel across the country, preaching his case for civil rights and the desegregation of
schools and public places. During his pursuit of desegregation, King and hundreds of his followers
were jailed in Birmingham, Alabama. There, from his jail cell, he penned the infamous "Letter from
the Birmingham Jail," in which he says that he'll gladly negotiate the terms of desegregation, under
the condition that he stops his sit–ins and marches. This was a large step towards racial
desegregation. ("Martin Luther King, Jr." 2) Soon after being released from the Birmingham Jail,
King joined other civil rights leaders in organizing the infamous "March on Washington." More than
200,000 participated in the march on August 28, 1963. After the march, the assembly gathered in the
shadow of the Lincoln Memorial, and King gave his famous, "I have a dream"speech, which called
for someday, the equality of all mankind. This historical day rose the tide of civil rights agitation to
an all–time high, and the next year resulted in the passage of the Civil Rights Act of

Historic Spanish Point Archaeological Site Essay
Located on Little Sarasota Bay in Osprey Florida on a thirty acre land, Historic Spanish Point is a
museum and an environmental complex operated by the Gulf Coast Heritage Association. The
museum includes an archeological exhibit of pre historic shell mound as a midden, a chapel,
boatyard, nature trails, a citrus packing house and a turn–of–the–century pioneer homestead historic
house museum (Burnett, 1986). The Historic Spanish Point is the earliest Archaeological site to be
listed in the national Register of Historic places and offers excellent leisurely walking tours to
numerous visitors who regularly tour this site all year round. There exists an archaeological record
that encompasses about 5,000 years of Florida prehistory. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Most of the pioneer settlers were attracted to settle in the area by the climate and the bounty of
Sarasota Bay. Archaeological excavations and exterminations of archaic data place the Historic
Spanish Point's Hill Cottage Midden in the archaic formative period (Walter, 2010). Midden refers
to a dump for domestic waste. Archaeologists worldwide describe all kinds of features containing
waste products relating to day–to–day human life as middens. A variety of archaeological materials
are contained in midden deposits including botanical material, potsherds, shell, animal bone, left
over pieces from making stone flack point and all other artifacts with historic human occupation.
The Archaic Midden, which is the oldest midden dates back as far as 3000 BC. This midden consists
of different layers of ancient artifacts like potter and shell tools. Shell Ridge Midden is the particular
site that the Webb family constructed their house. It was originally used as a platform for the
residence of the chief and ancient inhabitant's temple construction site. The prehistoric people had
an average age between 25–50 years and were relatively healthy given the fact that different
varieties of food were available to them. These people who were probably Paleo–Indian were
present in this region at around 8,000 B.C. It is also evident that native American lived mostly along
the waterfront of Sarasota while others are believed to

The Negative Effects Of Sports And Academic Performance
Sports and the general physical activities have been associated with a plethora of benefits. Not so
much in correlation with education though. The debate on sports and academic performance relates
as to whether sports affect academic performance positively or negatively. Mostly, academics,
especially in high school and colleges, require an enormous time commitment. In the same way,
sports demand time commitment. Apparently, academics and sports run linearly and either would
consume the time of the other. Such would be the argument put forth by the claimants of the
negative effects of sports on academic performance. The opponents to the positive correlation of
sports and academic performance ground their arguments largely on the time commitment that the
two require claiming that sports would consume a student's time for study hence affecting their
academic performance. Proponents of a positive correlation between sports and academic
performance summon an extensive range of evidence showing that students who participate in
sports perform well in academics. The proponents' arguments are fetched from the proven benefits
of exercise which improve a student's overall well–being and motivate their academic performance.
Opponents would, however, argue that the studies that find athletes and sports persons good at
academics do not show how such correlations occur in that other factors could be the actual causes
of the correlation and not sports in themselves. Regardless, opponents to the claim that sports affect
academic performance positively cannot deny that sports affect the overall well being of any human
being. As such, there is no denying that sports affect academic performance positively where a
balance among the two is maintained. School–organized sports are organized within a students study
curriculum. There is little to no evidence to suggest that schools would allow students to skip their
classes so that they attend to their sports commitments. Rather, programs are made to suit both the
academic commitments of a student and their sports requirements. There is no denying that a
balance may lack at some point where sports competitions may require extra commitment but not to
the extent that a student would

Theme Of Psycho And The Talented Mr. Ripley
The 1960 Alfred Hitchcock classic thriller, Psycho and the psychological thriller novel, The Talented
Mr.Ripley by notable American author Patricia Highsmith both challenge the audience's perception
of the noir protagonist through pronounced exploration controversial themes via the. Through the
use of a range of stylistic features, the authors aim to blur the line between innocence and guilt in
order to develop a false sense of empathy for the protagonists Tom Ripley and Norman Bates
(Anthony Perkins). Characterisation of both of these protagonists, used in a way that forces the
audience to connect with them and adopt an controversial point of view, transforms the audiences
perception of how the murderer of a psychological thriller should behave. Hitchcock uses ... Show

Highsmith and Hitchcock use characterization as the central means of forcing the audience to
develop a connection with the protagonists in both texts by using it to portray them as average
people. The most obvious technique used in creating an engaging picture for both characters is the
consonance in their names. Both Thomas Ripley and Norman Bates are short and average names,
which are not likely to spark an interest in the reader's mind. For this reason the reader is not able to
have any preconceived notions of either character purely on a basis of their name. In both texts, the
protagonists are shown as well–spoken young men with calm exteriors. Norman Bates and Tom
Ripley are introduced as average young men, who also seems lonely and gentle, therefore the
audience is forced to develop sympathy for his character from the beginning of the texts. They both
wear modest, conservative clothing; Highsmith's first description of Tom Ripley's costume "a suit
and a striped tie" suggests a moderate level of formality in his costume which during the time that
the book was written (1955), would resemble the look of the everyday man. Norman Bates is

Defending Jacob And Talented Mr Ripley Analysis
People always have a story to tell. No matter what the story is, they always want to make it ask
convincing as they can for the person who is reading or listening. However, the memorability and
true impact the story has on the reader doesn't always depend on the content, but many times they
also depend on what way the story is being told. Often times, many may feel that when a story is
told from an omniscient point of view, it may hold less bias and will relay all of the facts in an
accurate manner; however, some may feel that relaying a story in a first person point of view would
give the story more character and may make the story mor vivid for the reader. In both Defending
Jacob and Talented Mr. Ripley, it becomes evident that the reader ... Show more content on

In Defending Jacob, Barber describes in his own words how he has to literally fight his way through
proving his son Jacob's innocence from murder. No matter what evidence comes up, it ended up
going more and more in favor of the prosecution. Not only this, but even after the trial, he describes
how ends up losing Jacob again, but this time in two ways. Jacob allegedly committed a murder
after the trial, which is how he lost him in one way, and in the other way, Laurie killed him in a fatal
car crash. Seeing this, the reader feels that crime can be a very tiresome and heart wrenching thing,
which ends up taking more people than it needs. In the book Talented Mr. Ripley, however, the book
makes it seem as though crime is a very simple endeavor. Due to the nature of the third person point
of view, the narrator is able to convey without and true emotion, all of the facts and how Ripley was
able to commit the fraudulent crimes he did. Although Ripley encounters a few "slip–ups", such as
nearly being caught by Freddie Miles after he had recently murdered Dickie and was living under
his name, he is still conveniently and easily able to get out of this situation by assuming his initial
identity again. Seeing Ripley's ease in committing all the crimes that he does and that the crimes that
he committed actually benefited him a great deal, the reader may feel that crime can be an 'easy way
out' and that it is a very rewarding

The M Ori Culture
Most well known civilizations are fairly young in their life spans. The United Kingdom, France,
Italy; all these cultures as they are known today have only existed for approximately 400 years. The
Māori, an indigenous culture of New Zealand, have existed for a millennia. Specialized in nautical
exploits, the Māori thrived off of the island 's bountiful seas and developed a unique, rich identity as
a people. Yet rather than being regarded as a national treasure, most of New Zealand 's citizens and
the rest of the world treat the aboriginal population as a novelty. Most top search results for "Māori
Culture" are for attractions, guided tours, and similar spectacles. This culture, which has persisted
for nearly a thousand years, is gradually withering into little more than a side show attraction.
Rather than scholarly journals, articles, and history text, is instead an encroaching investment of the
Māori as capital, and how businesses may benefit from them (Rigby, Mueller, & Baker, 2011, 121).
This plight of exoticism is not exclusive to the Maori; aboriginal and indigenous societies all over
the world are forced into a unique cultural adaption in order to survive in Western capitalist
climates. Companies assume a guise of social interest, but "there is one and only one social
responsibility of business – to use its resources and engage in activities designed to increase its
profits so long as it stays within the rules of the game" (Rigby, Mueller, & Baker, 2011, 118).

Symbolism In The Talented Mr. Ripley By Patricia Highsmith
"The Talented Mr. Ripley" by Patricia Highsmith, set in 1950s in a somewhat vibrant, jazz
influenced Italy, gives a vivid insight into the mind of a small–time conman turned psychopath. It
also provides us with the central concepts of amorality, paranoia and how that survival and greed for
money can turn almost ordinary people uncaring and self–indulgent. Highsmith's use of third person
narrative is an effective technique and is used to expand on the thesis of morality in the novel . Tom
Ripley, a man in his mid–20's, claims he is close friends with Richard "Dickie" Greenleaf, when in
reality, he doesn't really know Dickie at all. (3) Approached by the wealthy Herbert Greenleaf, Tom
is asked to retrieve his son, Dickie, from Italy. (3) ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Overall the themes and plots were similar, but there were additional characters and a different

much I thought I was going to after reading the book. In the same way that every mystery is exciting
until you find the logical explanation, the film is intriguing because you don't have the luxury of
knowing Tom's background, or why he covets Dickie's lifestyle. It was because of these changes,
even though some were minor that I did not enjoy the movie. I do understand though that in order to
appeal to a more broad audience the producers had to add and change details in order for it to be
more appealing. The differences did not make the movie unexciting, but the book is definitely better.
The book provides a more in–depth profile analysis of the characters involved and especially puts a

Education, if looked at beyond its traditional sense, forms the fundamentals of our daily lives. How
we act and what we believe are based upon the knowledge we gain through instruction and

development of a nation. At a smaller scale, each individual 's future is also dependent upon their

Marc Tucker, president and CEO of the National Center on Education and the Economy claims at
South Korea(Choi), students have been taught that the only way to climb socioeconomic ladder and
to find secure work is through examinations(Choi). Being taught to aim and achieve the impossible
at a young age, the Koreans have attained some extraordinary achievements, including 100 percent
adult literacy and are at the leading position on international comparative tests such as SAT(Choi).
However, such accomplishments come with an expensive cost, students are constantly under
immense stress to study, perform, and failures are no options for them. According to Elizabeth Shim,
a freelance journalist who specializes on Korean affairs, the suicide rate in South Korea has become
the leading cause of death with a horrifying number of 7.8 per 100000 for teenagers from age 15 to
24, and the number is still growing(Shim). This perfectly demonstrates the set of principles which
the Korean people are trying to teach their next generation, work hard and diligently, which is the
only road toward success. With no doubt, growing up with constant competitions, failures, and more
competitions, the Korean model has taught the students how to work hard and how to persist(Ripley,

The Gay and Lesbian Community in the Y Generation
As the Y Generation continues to expand its horizons, new trends of tolerance are beginning to shine
through. The gay and lesbian community is more readily embraced by today's generation than by
generations in America's past. More and more people are "coming out" than ever before, which
proves that the gay and lesbian community is gaining acceptance and their rights to equality are
slowing increasing, but discrimination is still there. Even though gays and lesbians are more
accepted amongst the Y Generation, hate and misunderstanding still exist.

Gabriel Rotello in his article "Calling All Parents," underscores this need for parental love by stating
that almost all lesbian and gay teens go through a terrible, lonely stage when they feel they have no
one to turn to, not even their own family members – sometimes especially not their own family
members. It's a phase that can leave lasting psychological damage even to the vast majority who
survive it (112). Gay children are at extremely high risk for anxiety, confusion, despair, and, yes,
some even contemplate suicide. In fact, according to a recent study published in the May 1999 issue
of Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, gay and lesbian youth "were 3.4 times as likely to
have attempted suicide than straight youth." (487)
Can the media play a part to alert parents of gay children to express their love and acceptance before
it is too late? We see and hear campaigns about drugs and smoking, but what about homosexuality?
Rotello took the plunge and created an ad campaign that warns, "Millions of American kids are gay
and at risk. So talk to your children and let them know you love them, no matter how they choose to
love." (112) The more exposure this sensitive issue receives in the media, the better off families with
gay members will be.
On another note, the gay and lesbian community is gaining more acceptance in the entertainment
industry. Entertainment is something that pertains to every

Justice Department was investigating the company's March 2006 agreement with Canadian generic
drug manufacturer Apotex. The agreement was intended to delay the Apotex's release of an
inexpensive generic version of Plavix.
Under the terms of Bristol–Myers' ill–conceived agreement with Apotex, BMS offered Apotex $40
million to halt production of the generic Plavix until June 1, 2011. This date was five months before
the Plavix patent was set to expire. Bristol–Myers also agreed not to release its own non–branded

asked to approve the agreement, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and state Attorneys

because it assured that Apotex would be the sole market vendor of cheap, generic Plavix for at least
six months. So, Bristol–Myers Squibb agreed to remove the anti–competitive provision from the
contract. Nevertheless, the FTC began questioning Apotex regarding the revised agreement. During
these questioning sessions, Apotex told the federal regulators that Bristol–Myers had given Apotex
private assurance that it would not release a general version of Plavix to the market.

Value Of Life In Amanda Ripley's Soliloquy '
Human life has so many different meanings. The value of someone's life is a commodity that people
are compensated with. Society should place a value on human life, because with out humans society
wouldn't exist. Society can do this by finding a common ground number value for everyone.
In the article "Hamlet soliloquy", by William Shakespeare, he argues with himself if you should live
or die. He views life with so many negative aspects. For example when he says, "The slings and it
arrows of outrageous fortune or to take arms against a sea of troubles" (lines 3–4). He means do I
commit suicide or do I stay and fight the challenges in my life. Everyone has a place on this earth
every one has their own personal battles they have to fight. When your born you count as a voice

Some people just say that without a doubt people's lives are priceless and no one should put a
money value on humans life or all people are not equal they are all different. And they are all right
they just have to understand how hard it is to really put a money value on someone's life and that
people are all different in their own unique personalities but are all equal in that we are all humans.
Amanda Ripley also states that a man named David Gordenstein said, "I would rather devote his life
to raising his too young daughter than pursue a lawsuit" (6). Society should just focus on their
family and not be worrying about if they're going to get compensated by their loved ones loss.
Society should not treat a person's death as a price tag. Our society has shifted and has lost sight of
the value of life. In my opinion their would be less arguing if everyone has the same number value.
Everyone's life is worth something. So as like what's Steve Jobs said in his commencement speech
"You've got to find what you love", "Stay hungry. Stay foolish"

A Short Biography : A Biography Of William Faulkner
Who is William Faulkner? William Faulkner, in full William Cuthbert Faulkner, original surname
Falkner (born September 25, 1897, New Albany, Mississippi, U.S.–died July 6, 1962, Byhalia,
Mississippi), American novelist and short–story writer who was awarded the 1949 Nobel Prize for
Literature. As the eldest of the four sons of Murry Cuthbert and Maud Butler Falkner, William
Faulkner (as he later spelled his name) was well aware of his family background and especially of
his great–grandfather, Colonel William Clark Falkner, a colourful if violent figure who fought
gallantly during the Civil War, built a local railway, and published a popular romantic novel called
The White Rose of Memphis. Faulkner soon moved with his parents to nearby Ripley and then to
the town of Oxford, the seat of Lafayette county, where his father later became business manager of
the University of Mississippi.
As a reluctant student, he left high school without graduating but devoted himself to "undirected
reading," first in isolation and later under the guidance of Phil Stone, a family friend who combined
study and practice of the law with lively literary interests and was a constant source of current books
and magazines. In July 1918, impelled by dreams of martial glory and by despair at a broken love
affair, Faulkner joined the British Royal Air Force (RAF) as a cadet pilot under training in Canada,

nuclear threats still loom in the air as they remind the world of their nuclear capabilities by
conducting a series of tests. Since 2006, they have been using P'unggye–ri, a secluded part of the
country, as their testing grounds to detonate their bombs. Although North Korea tends to exaggerate
their accomplishments, U.S. intelligence has confirmed that the collection of radioactive debris in
air samples has provided enough evidence to prove that the tests have indeed taken place ("North
Korea Nuclear Tests"). Due to the fact that North Korea has not yet coordinated a major direct
physical attack (other than cyber–attacks) on their rivals since the Korean War, their firepower is
often underestimated. Throughout the years, their scientists have shown great improvements in their

The project was financially unsuccessful and eventually failed when some of the buildings burned
down.4 The Transcendentalist movement did not have one direction that it followed but was by
definition only in agreement over the fact that nature is the remedy to societal disfiguration. To
transcend societal restraints means to refocus on what the "real" and "natural" behaviors and
convictions are. The easiest way to understand what is natural to a Transcendentalist is to
comprehend what is not. To Emerson secularization and the development of fascination with science
and the intellectualism that grew with it bore dangers to the individual and its personal formation. A
development away from the individual experience of one's surroundings and towards the study of
empiric studies would create structures of knowledge that are unquestioned by its students who
believe that only what is written is true. "Roles imposed on the individual by society and its
institutions impeded individual expression and freedom, restricted choice, and ultimately resulted in
self–alienation."5 A lot of the influence that formed transcendentalist thought came from
Romanticism. The understanding that sense is more important than intellect and

Gender And Sexuality : Perspectives On Lgbt History Essay
Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, several authors have written about the struggles and

Analysis Of Highsmith Moved Into The Yaddo Artist 's Retreat
In 1948, Highsmith moved into the Yaddo artist 's retreat, a community which aims to "to nurture
the creative process by providing an opportunity for artists to work without interruption in a
supportive environment" (Yaddo). During her time here, she lived generally disconnected from the
outside world and completely immersed herself in her writing. When not working on her novel, she
was journaling. Murder, she wrote, "'is a kind of making love, a kind of possessing.' She described it
as feeling 'quite close to murder,' with her hands on her lover 's throat instantly making the victim
'cool and rigid as a statue'" ("Murder for Pleasure" 54). Her personal journals were strangely

Highsmith, who was never exclusive with Brandel, resented having sex with him. However, despite
the repulsion she felt towards her partner, Patricia was determined to make it work. For six months,
Highsmith underwent psychoanalysis in an effort "to regularize herself sexually" so she could marry
Brandel (Schenkar 138–139). Although she withdrew from treatment, the psychological community
heavily impacted the outlook Highsmith had on her personal relationships in her life. This is
especially prevalent in regards to her sexuality. Strangers on a Train, Highsmith's first novel, deals
with both psychopathy and homosexuality. The main characters of this novel happen upon one
another during a chance encounter on a train. Guy, the protagonist, meets Bruno. Afterward, the two
start discussing the problems in their lives, and Guy spills his heart out to Bruno, for "Bruno was not
the ordinary stranger on the train by any means. He was cruel and corrupt enough himself to
appreciate a story like that of his first love" (Highsmith, Strangers 23). Once the two have gotten to
know one another, Bruno seems to make a joke about each killing off the individual who creates
issues in the other's life. Guy is disturbed by this idea, but Bruno is serious. At this point, Highsmith
starts developing the psychopathic buildup of Guy. Throughout the novel, Guy is shown to be a
considerate, caring man. At one point, he thinks "the taste of Scotch, though Guy didn't much care

The Infamous Civil War Prison Andersonville Essay
The Infamous Civil War Prison Andersonville
The Confederacy established Andersonville, that most infamous of Civil War prisons, in late
February, 1864. It built a stockade in west central Georgia to accommodate approximately 10,000
prisoners of war. As the fighting moved ever deeper into the South in the last year of the war, the
expanded stockade at one point held nearly 33,000 Union soldiers. The termination by the North of
the prisoner of war exchanges which had existed previously and the continually depleting resources
of the Confederacy left these prisoners stranded in miserable conditions.
By the end of the war, 13,000 of the total 45,000 prisoners had died. They were buried in shallow

The entire regiment, except for one group on scout was captured at Union City, Tennessee on March
24, 1864 by a detachment of Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest's regiment under the command of Col.
William L. Duckworth. The captured men were mainly from Carroll, Henderson and McNairy
Counties with some recruits from Henry, Weakley, Benton, Madison, Gibson, Hardin, and Decatur
counties. These men suffered horribly during the time they were prisoners. Two–thirds of them died
within a year of the capture. Their high mortality rate can be attibuted both to the prison to which
they were sent and to the actions of their captors.
One group within the captors of the 7th Tennessee Cavalry USA was the 7th Tennessee Cavalry
CSA. Both groups were primarily West Tennesseans and there was intense ill feeling between them.
Some men were neighbors and personally knew each other. For the 7th Tennessee USA, the
humiliation was almost total. Colonel Duckworth tricked them into surrender when help was nearby.
And, it was the second time that Forrest's men had forced them to surrender. The first time at
Trenton in December, 1862, they had been paroled and had spent their time at Camp Chase, Ohio.
Some members of the regiment, who were captured at Ripley and Mt. Pinson, Tennesse, had even
spent a short time in Richmond, Virginia in 1863 before being parolled once again. By March 1864,
however, the Lincoln government had stopped the exchanges. This time there

The term "Drone" is a keyword to a touchy subject. There are many different types and uses for
these drones though, most of which are beneficial; unfortunately, media sources report on the
negatives of drones by publishing headlines like "Drone flies up to White House", or "Drone strikes

good. The use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles are key to the future of many industries and when used
right will benefit all. Drones can be defined as any unmanned vehicle, but many view drones as
killing machines that fly over countries and eliminate the bad guys. Some may even see it as a way

The oil industry is an expanding enterprise that is constantly building new refineries and pipelines to
transport oil and gas to where it needs to be. There are also older pipelines and refining centers that
could possibly need rehabilitation; Drones can help in both these situations. For the newly built
pipeline and refineries, drones can be used to make sure everything is in place and built to code to
prevent from injury. In the case of worn out pipeline, drones can be used to inspect the pipeline
using thermal imaging to spot any leaks, and a x–ray to look at the integrity of the pipe. By using
these methods it would eliminate the need for crews to hand inspect the pipes, and instead just fix
what the drone finds. Another industry that is benefiting from drones that are already helping to
produce a better product is farming. The new age of farming will most certainly involve the use of
drones to assist the farmer in making a larger quantity of a better crop. Cost is a big factor for
farmers in determining decisions they will make, with the use of a drone in the fields, cost will be
greatly reduced. With a drone there would be no need for crop sprayers to spray the field, or large,
expensive combines to seed the crop. The drones would easily be able to do this safely, and

So how did all of this affect our country? It had a huge impact on the United States not only
emotionally, but politically and economically.
September 11th, 2001 was the beginning of a new fear, and a sense of Americans had to "watch their
back". The attacks made US citizens more aware, but made the US look like it wasn't as invincible
as it was portrayed. Some of the short term effects that took place after 9/11 was the heart ache felt
by all the families of almost three–thousand victims in the attack. It caused a complete shutdown of
the American air space, stock markets closed down, and insurance companies, airlines and tourists
sector showed longer periods of recession. In New York there was a short term oversupply of rental
space and a reduction in hotel occupancy. There was a lot of discrimination and still is today against
"Muslim–looking" travelers, and a huge increase of hate crimes after the events. Some of the long–
term effects after 9/11 was an increase in people joining the military, the USA Patriot Act which
came into effect October 26th, 2001. There was a huge increase in security which also involved
allowing law enforcement agencies to search private data and the right for USA to detain and deport
immigrants suspected of terrorists' activities. In the book "9/11 In American Culture", professor of

Character Analysis Of The Talented Mr Ripley
In The Talented Mr. Ripley, Tom Ripley is the main character, and his adventures around the world.
Breaking down the story, Ripley is imitating somebody to change his own personality. Ripley is
attempting to change his personality not to one particular individual, but rather to a large number of
individuals who are more successful and rich, for example, Dickie Greenleaf. Ripley feels the need
to mimick people because he feels the need to escape his actual life and identify as someone normal
and wealthy so that he could take advantage of their lives. David Grann stresses that when
Bourdin(a famous fraud) would talk in Spanish, his whole personality changed to that of a Spaniard.
This was additionally the same with communicating in English, his character changed again to an
Englishman. Besides, Bourdin had an ability that enabled him to emulate other individuals, or as one
individual expressed about him as a stunning actor(Grann, 2010). Grann uncovered how these
extortionists are so effective in their cons. The same is available in Ripley. This is seen when he can
emulate Greenleaf's penmanship and a large portion of his identity. Ripley uses this skill to create a
new life for him where he can actual see himself in Greenleaf's life, meaning, he begins to feel more
free as Greenleaf than himself, change his personality to that of less demanding one. As the story
continues, Ripley begins to see how much easier it is to impersonate someone other than himself.

Is The Theme Of Power In The Film Out Of Sight By Steven...
In the film Out of Sight (Steven Soderbergh, 1998) elements of mise en scene, lighting, editing and
characters reveal the themes of identity, love and power. The theme of power directly relates to the
economic boom in the United States in the 1990s and the population's strive for success. These
themes are brought out through the repetitive use of the color red in the film and are also used to
relate back to the title.
In relation to other American action films released in 1998, Out of Sight is a very fast faced movie
much like the rest of them. The fast paced editing style that Soderbergh utilized in the film relates
very much to the race to power that was so prevalent in the 1990s. When the economy started to
boom, the people of the country ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first shot of this sequence is of Foley sitting in a chair at a desk with a red colored wall behind
him. Right away the color red is introduced on the wall as well as on the desk in pens, the top of a
yogurt, a potted plant and the wrapper of a power bar. After the man who was at the desk in front of
Foley leaves the room, Foley's eyes gaze upon the contents of the desk. The camera pans over the
red objects on the desk and then stops to rest upon the wrapper of the power bar. Half eaten and half
unwrapped, only the red words "power" are exposed. This is an exceptional shot because it reveals
the color red and reveals the word "power", which illustrates the fact that the men in Ripley
Enterprise have power and Foley does not. In the next shot, the man at the desk enters the room
once again holding a suit and Foley turns away from looking at the power bar to blankly staring at
the dull colored suit. This suit represents what Foley could become; a regular guy with a regular job
of being a security guard but for him this isn't going to cut it. Foley is obsessed with the idea of
being higher class than he ever will be and this is reflected by the way he stared at the "power" on
the wrapper; because power is something he desperately wants. Foley has an identity in his mind
that he is set out

Current Sources Of The State Of Indonesia
In Indonesia, petroleum is one of the main sources of the state revenues. It is also a very important
strategic commodity and often as political issue. The revenues from oil and gas have driven the
economic growth and contributed significantly for the development of Indonesia. In the world,
legislations which regulate oil and gas are varies from country to country. In spite of many
variations, in general, the upstream oil and gas activities, based on two systems, the production–
sharing contracts and the licensing systems. Indonesia was the country that introduced the concept
of production–sharing contracts in 1966 (Bindemann, 1999).
After the verdict of Indonesian Constitutional Court in 2012 on The Oil and Gas Law, some of the
articles were unconstitutional and not legally binding. As a result, the government and the
parliament want to revise the oil and gas law and led to the ideas of replacing the production–
sharing contract with the licensing system. Nevertheless, before Indonesia adopts the new system,
many aspects should be considered in designing legislations. Some of the aspects are the concept of
natural resources ownership, revenues for the state, and attractiveness for the investors.
Mean while, as the owner of natural resources, the government has the rights to control and regulate
petroleum resources. The government would also have to balance its demand for maximizing the
revenues from oil and gas and adverse effect on investment climate. Thus, it should be

Alien Movie Essay
In the movie Alien the director Ridley Scott creates tension and suspense using a range of filmic
techniques which include camera angles, diegetic and non–diegetic sounds and symbolic movie
props. These techniques are used in the scene involving the isolated crew members searching for
Jones the cat. The camera follows the group that includes the protagonist Ripley with two others,
Brett and Parker, symbolizing something is going to happen to them.
At the start of the scene, the group is seen walking down a corridor. The frame is a long shot,
displaying how narrow the corridor is. The mise–en–scene is dimly lit and tight, creating a
claustrophobic atmosphere. There is very little sound; the only diegetic sound comes from the foot–

We look inside the new room from Brett's point of view. The next shot is shown from a bird's eye
view, possibly the alien's, which demonstrates Brett's vulnerability. Various chains hang from the
ceiling, creating diegetic clanking sounds as Brett walks through the room. The only light source
comes from high above in a ceiling opening. The camera turns into another point of view shot
looking up at the ceiling, showing the dripping water fall. A close up shot of Brett appears as he
stands under the water with his eyes closed. He shares half the mise–en–scene with open space in
the background. This creates tension as he is in a state of vulnerability and leaves the audience
helpless as the scene builds towards the climax, admitting a possibility of something appearing
behind him. He hears a noise and walks out of the frame, creating a false climax. As he crouches
down to beckon Jones out of his hiding spot, what seems to be another clanking chain comes into
view. This is the climax of the scene, as almost instantly the audience realises Brett is in trouble. As
the camera shows the alien's face, fast instrumental non–diegetic music begins to play. Brett turns
around, watching Jones move back and hearing the diegetic sound of the creature behind him. A
close up of Brett's face looking up fearfully is displayed; this shows the audience how superior the
alien is and how much it has grown. The scene ends with a range of

There is consequently a vast and continuous effort going on to capture our minds in the interest of
some policy or commodity or idea. It might be better to have, instead of propaganda and special

Propaganda eat. But we have chosen the opposite method, that of open competition. We must find
a way to make free competition function with reasonable smoothness. To achieve this society has
consented to permit free competition to be organized by leadership and propaganda. Some of the
phenomena of this process are criticized–the manipulation of news, the inflation of personality, and
the general ballyhoo by which politicians and commercial products and social ideas are brought to
the consciousness of the masses. The instruments by which public opinion is organized and focused
may be misused. But such organization and focusing are necessary to orderly life. As civilization has

The Talented Mr.Ripley
The Struggle of the Mind The Psychoanalytic Theory is a means of literary critique which provides
a framework for insightful character analysis. Its tenet is based on Sigmund Freud's structural model
of the psyche which identifies the id, the ego and the superego as the three theoretical constructs in
terms of whose activity and interaction mental life is described. According to such model, the
irrational, instinctual trends of the mind are the id; the rational, realistic part of the psyche is the ego;
and its critical and moralizing function is the superego. By applying such Freudian concepts to Tom

His common sense tells him that, "...if he only hadn't been in such a hurry and so greedy, if he only
hadn't misjudged the relationship between Dickie and Marge so stupidly, or had simply waited for
them to separate of their own volition, then none of this would have happened, and he could have
lived with Dickie for the rest of his life, travelled and lived and enjoyed living for the rest of his
life." (Highsmith 137)
Tom's ego helps him to understand that he cannot always get what he wants immediately and that if
he had compromised and waited, he might have been happier, and it is this realization that makes
him feel isolated and alone. By the end of the novel, Tom's ego resurfaces and he changes his
attitude toward others. While before he only thought of what he wanted, he now "...was inspired to
spend hours with [Mrs. Cartwright] in the deck chair, talking to her and listening to her talk about
her life in England and Greece..." (Highsmith 267) As Tom realizes that the evidence that has been
unveiled thus far in the murders is pointing towards his guilt, he begins to reason that his new life
may come to an end and he recognizes other people's solitude because he too feels the same way.
While Tom's id and ego are at odds with each other, his superego never fully develops for he
sometimes experiences guilt for his wrongdoings but does not accept full responsibility

The Issue of Overcoming Racial Inequality in the United...
The label of inferiority poses immense challenges on the structure of a society. Branding a group of
people as "savages" creates divisions in society that drastically affects how individuals are supposed
to interact with these "inferiors." It makes you think of someone who is uneducated or unsocialized,
one who is not granted full rights and privileges. Other words that might have the same the sort of
connotation for many in the United States today are "alien," "immigrant worker," or "illegal

Using these concepts to better understand the complex reality of race relations in the United States,
a clearer picture can be painted of why white racial supremacy has been so powerful in all aspects of
U.S. American society.
The institution of slavery in the United States of America was a process that evolved over
generations; an institution which developed in the northern colonies of New England area very
differently than the Southern colonies. In the South, slavery as an institution started to enhance the
productivity of agriculture. It may not have been the most humane way to grow cotton or sugar
cane, but slavery provided essentially "free" labor to white farmers: "The settlers in the Southern
States were naturally tempted by the example of the West Indian planters, to make use of these
imported black[s] in the service of field labor" ("Slaves and Slavery"). African people were
kidnapped from their home, shipped across the Atlantic Ocean, and sold as property in order to do
manual labor for white people. Many today are ashamed that the U.S. went through such a cruel
period of history when we subjected millions to the atrocities of the slave trade. The result of the
1860 census states that almost 13% of the population was slaves, or four million slaves in a country

potentially new medications available that could offer real benefit. The data gathered and examined
in the clinical trials presents pharmaceutical companies with the statistical data that suggests
whether a new medication or treatment will be effective or not. It is the responsibility of scientists
today working within pharmaceutical companies to rethink the standard clinical trial models when
faced with deadly diseases to which there are no effective treatments available. The clinical trial
model for novel medications should look to provide creative ways to offer subjects in the control
group some medical benefit other than just an inactive dosage of the novel medication in question. A
majority of medical professionals still question the use of control groups receiving placebo or active
control under the grounds that it is unethical for at–risk populations to

Signs, Symbols And Signals Of The Underground Railroad Essay

  • 1. Signs, Symbols and Signals of the Underground Railroad Essay Signs, Symbols and Signals of the Underground Railroad A journey of hundreds of miles lies before you, through swamp, forest and mountain pass. Your supplies are meager, only what can be comfortably carried so as not to slow your progress to the Promised Land – Canada. The stars and coded messages for guidance, you set out through the night, the path illuminated by the intermittent flash of lightning. Without a map and no real knowledge of the surrounding area, your mind races before you and behind you all at once. Was that the barking of the slavecatchers' dogs behind you or just the pounding rain and thunder? Does each step bring you closer to freedom or failure? The Underground Railroad was an escape network of small, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Mr. Still was unusual in that he kept careful, written records of those he assisted, including short biographies on some, which he published in 1872. Mr. Still often employed railroad metaphors in his writing. The following example illustrates the way messages were encoded so that only those active in the railroad would fully understand their meaning, even if intercepted by outsiders: "I have sent via a two o'clock four large and two small hams," which indicated that four adults and two children were being sent by train from Harrisburg to Philadelphia." (Wikipedia, Underground Railroad) The use of the word via was to indicate that they were not sent on a regular locomotive, but via Reading, PA. In this case the authorities went to the train station in Philadelphia with the hopes of intercepting the fugitives, allowing Still's agent to meet them in Reading and escort them to safety. Some preachers, friends of the cause, were said to have encoded their sermons to inform select parishioners of the arrival and departure of fugitives over the course of the coming week. Some wore a specific colored handkerchief in their pocket to indicate a meeting to be held or impending arrival of fugitives. As a matter of necessity, stationmasters were accustomed to knocks on their doors or windows at odd hours of the night. The response to the question of "Who's there?" was ... • 5. Talent Mr Ripley Analysis In the film 'The Talented Mr. Ripley' directed by Anthony Minghella there are four aspects in the last scene of Peter's death, used by the director that impacts the audience by making them feel sorry for Tom. The four aspects I feel impacted the audience the most are dialogue, non–diegetic music, voiceover and symbols and motifs. The first aspect is dialogue. An example of dialogue is when Tom says "I'm going to be stuck in the basement aren't I. aren't I. That's my... terrible and alone and dark". This is when Tom realizes he is never going to get away from his past and that he will never have his happily ever after because he is stuck in all this metaphorical darkness which causes him to kill peter even though he loves him. We know that he thinks this because earlier in the film Tom mentions a metaphorical basement where all his dark thoughts and secrets are kept and he is saying in the dialogue that he is going to be stuck in there. This scene impacts the audience significantly well because in the scene before the director had made it seem that Tom and Peter were going to have a life together. But in this scene, the director puts in this dialogue to make Tom realize he cannot have the life that he wanted because of the bad choices he had made for example killing to other people and stealing an identity. Also this dialogue is aimed toward Peter so Tom can show his feelings that he has not discussed with anyone else, but also this dialogue has Tom make up his mind about ... The Racial Controversy Surrounding the Assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. The impact of Martin Luther King, Jr. today is no doubt revered. He is commonly called the "Father of Civil Rights," and is looked upon as a national icon, in an almost presidential–type light. His achievements have not only begat a national holiday for his birthday, but also helped lead to the creation of Black History Month. However, his accomplishments were not so regaled in his own time. In fact, most Caucasian Americans refused to even recognize any ban or barrier he and his cohorts attempted to change. African–Americans were just simply not respected by most whites in the 1950s and 1960s because they were considered "inferior." This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The MIA's boycott lasted over a year, but finally, in early 1957, Montgomery's buses were desegregated. This was, on many levels, the first large–scale stand taken to end segregation in the South. ("Martin Luther King, Jr." 1) King went on to form the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1960, which gave him a base of operation and a national platform to speak. King began to travel across the country, preaching his case for civil rights and the desegregation of schools and public places. During his pursuit of desegregation, King and hundreds of his followers were jailed in Birmingham, Alabama. There, from his jail cell, he penned the infamous "Letter from the Birmingham Jail," in which he says that he'll gladly negotiate the terms of desegregation, under the condition that he stops his sit–ins and marches. This was a large step towards racial desegregation. ("Martin Luther King, Jr." 2) Soon after being released from the Birmingham Jail, King joined other civil rights leaders in organizing the infamous "March on Washington." More than 200,000 participated in the march on August 28, 1963. After the march, the assembly gathered in the shadow of the Lincoln Memorial, and King gave his famous, "I have a dream"speech, which called for someday, the equality of all mankind. This historical day rose the tide of civil rights agitation to an all–time high, and the next year resulted in the passage of the Civil Rights Act of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Historic Spanish Point Archaeological Site Essay Located on Little Sarasota Bay in Osprey Florida on a thirty acre land, Historic Spanish Point is a museum and an environmental complex operated by the Gulf Coast Heritage Association. The museum includes an archeological exhibit of pre historic shell mound as a midden, a chapel, boatyard, nature trails, a citrus packing house and a turn–of–the–century pioneer homestead historic house museum (Burnett, 1986). The Historic Spanish Point is the earliest Archaeological site to be listed in the national Register of Historic places and offers excellent leisurely walking tours to numerous visitors who regularly tour this site all year round. There exists an archaeological record that encompasses about 5,000 years of Florida prehistory. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Most of the pioneer settlers were attracted to settle in the area by the climate and the bounty of Sarasota Bay. Archaeological excavations and exterminations of archaic data place the Historic Spanish Point's Hill Cottage Midden in the archaic formative period (Walter, 2010). Midden refers to a dump for domestic waste. Archaeologists worldwide describe all kinds of features containing waste products relating to day–to–day human life as middens. A variety of archaeological materials are contained in midden deposits including botanical material, potsherds, shell, animal bone, left over pieces from making stone flack point and all other artifacts with historic human occupation. The Archaic Midden, which is the oldest midden dates back as far as 3000 BC. This midden consists of different layers of ancient artifacts like potter and shell tools. Shell Ridge Midden is the particular site that the Webb family constructed their house. It was originally used as a platform for the residence of the chief and ancient inhabitant's temple construction site. The prehistoric people had an average age between 25–50 years and were relatively healthy given the fact that different varieties of food were available to them. These people who were probably Paleo–Indian were present in this region at around 8,000 B.C. It is also evident that native American lived mostly along the waterfront of Sarasota while others are believed to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. The Negative Effects Of Sports And Academic Performance Sports and the general physical activities have been associated with a plethora of benefits. Not so much in correlation with education though. The debate on sports and academic performance relates as to whether sports affect academic performance positively or negatively. Mostly, academics, especially in high school and colleges, require an enormous time commitment. In the same way, sports demand time commitment. Apparently, academics and sports run linearly and either would consume the time of the other. Such would be the argument put forth by the claimants of the negative effects of sports on academic performance. The opponents to the positive correlation of sports and academic performance ground their arguments largely on the time commitment that the two require claiming that sports would consume a student's time for study hence affecting their academic performance. Proponents of a positive correlation between sports and academic performance summon an extensive range of evidence showing that students who participate in sports perform well in academics. The proponents' arguments are fetched from the proven benefits of exercise which improve a student's overall well–being and motivate their academic performance. Opponents would, however, argue that the studies that find athletes and sports persons good at academics do not show how such correlations occur in that other factors could be the actual causes of the correlation and not sports in themselves. Regardless, opponents to the claim that sports affect academic performance positively cannot deny that sports affect the overall well being of any human being. As such, there is no denying that sports affect academic performance positively where a balance among the two is maintained. School–organized sports are organized within a students study curriculum. There is little to no evidence to suggest that schools would allow students to skip their classes so that they attend to their sports commitments. Rather, programs are made to suit both the academic commitments of a student and their sports requirements. There is no denying that a balance may lack at some point where sports competitions may require extra commitment but not to the extent that a student would ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Theme Of Psycho And The Talented Mr. Ripley The 1960 Alfred Hitchcock classic thriller, Psycho and the psychological thriller novel, The Talented Mr.Ripley by notable American author Patricia Highsmith both challenge the audience's perception of the noir protagonist through pronounced exploration controversial themes via the. Through the use of a range of stylistic features, the authors aim to blur the line between innocence and guilt in order to develop a false sense of empathy for the protagonists Tom Ripley and Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins). Characterisation of both of these protagonists, used in a way that forces the audience to connect with them and adopt an controversial point of view, transforms the audiences perception of how the murderer of a psychological thriller should behave. Hitchcock uses ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Highsmith and Hitchcock use characterization as the central means of forcing the audience to develop a connection with the protagonists in both texts by using it to portray them as average people. The most obvious technique used in creating an engaging picture for both characters is the consonance in their names. Both Thomas Ripley and Norman Bates are short and average names, which are not likely to spark an interest in the reader's mind. For this reason the reader is not able to have any preconceived notions of either character purely on a basis of their name. In both texts, the protagonists are shown as well–spoken young men with calm exteriors. Norman Bates and Tom Ripley are introduced as average young men, who also seems lonely and gentle, therefore the audience is forced to develop sympathy for his character from the beginning of the texts. They both wear modest, conservative clothing; Highsmith's first description of Tom Ripley's costume "a suit and a striped tie" suggests a moderate level of formality in his costume which during the time that the book was written (1955), would resemble the look of the everyday man. • 31. Defending Jacob And Talented Mr Ripley Analysis People always have a story to tell. No matter what the story is, they always want to make it ask convincing as they can for the person who is reading or listening. However, the memorability and true impact the story has on the reader doesn't always depend on the content, but many times they also depend on what way the story is being told. Often times, many may feel that when a story is told from an omniscient point of view, it may hold less bias and will relay all of the facts in an accurate manner; however, some may feel that relaying a story in a first person point of view would give the story more character and may make the story mor vivid for the reader. In both Defending Jacob and Talented Mr. Ripley, it becomes evident that the reader ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Defending Jacob, Barber describes in his own words how he has to literally fight his way through proving his son Jacob's innocence from murder. No matter what evidence comes up, it ended up going more and more in favor of the prosecution. Not only this, but even after the trial, he describes how ends up losing Jacob again, but this time in two ways. Jacob allegedly committed a murder after the trial, which is how he lost him in one way, and in the other way, Laurie killed him in a fatal car crash. Seeing this, the reader feels that crime can be a very tiresome and heart wrenching thing, which ends up taking more people than it needs. In the book Talented Mr. Ripley, however, the book makes it seem as though crime is a very simple endeavor. Due to the nature of the third person point of view, the narrator is able to convey without and true emotion, all of the facts and how Ripley was able to commit the fraudulent crimes he did. Although Ripley encounters a few "slip–ups", such as nearly being caught by Freddie Miles after he had recently murdered Dickie and was living under his name, he is still conveniently and easily able to get out of this situation by assuming his initial identity again. Seeing Ripley's ease in committing all the crimes that he does and that the crimes that he committed actually benefited him a great deal, the reader may feel that crime can be an 'easy way out' and that it is a very rewarding ... The United Kingdom, France, Italy; all these cultures as they are known today have only existed for approximately 400 years. The Māori, an indigenous culture of New Zealand, have existed for a millennia. Specialized in nautical exploits, the Māori thrived off of the island 's bountiful seas and developed a unique, rich identity as a people. Yet rather than being regarded as a national treasure, most of New Zealand 's citizens and the rest of the world treat the aboriginal population as a novelty. Most top search results for "Māori Culture" are for attractions, guided tours, and similar spectacles. This culture, which has persisted for nearly a thousand years, is gradually withering into little more than a side show attraction. Rather than scholarly journals, articles, and history text, is instead an encroaching investment of the Māori as capital, and how businesses may benefit from them (Rigby, Mueller, & Baker, 2011, 121). This plight of exoticism is not exclusive to the Maori; aboriginal and indigenous societies all over the world are forced into a unique cultural adaption in order to survive in Western capitalist climates. Companies assume a guise of social interest, but "there is one and only one social responsibility of business – to use its resources and engage in activities designed to increase its profits so long as it stays within the rules of the game" (Rigby, Mueller, & Baker, 2011, 118). ... • 39. Symbolism In The Talented Mr. Ripley By Patricia Highsmith "The Talented Mr. Ripley" by Patricia Highsmith, set in 1950s in a somewhat vibrant, jazz influenced Italy, gives a vivid insight into the mind of a small–time conman turned psychopath. It also provides us with the central concepts of amorality, paranoia and how that survival and greed for money can turn almost ordinary people uncaring and self–indulgent. Highsmith's use of third person narrative is an effective technique and is used to expand on the thesis of morality in the novel . Tom Ripley, a man in his mid–20's, claims he is close friends with Richard "Dickie" Greenleaf, when in reality, he doesn't really know Dickie at all. It was because of these changes, even though some were minor that I did not enjoy the movie. I do understand though that in order to appeal to a more broad audience the producers had to add and change details in order for it to be more appealing. The differences did not make the movie unexciting, but the book is definitely better. The Gay and Lesbian Community in the Y Generation As the Y Generation continues to expand its horizons, new trends of tolerance are beginning to shine through. The gay and lesbian community is more readily embraced by today's generation than by generations in America's past. Gabriel Rotello in his article "Calling All Parents," underscores this need for parental love by stating that almost all lesbian and gay teens go through a terrible, lonely stage when they feel they have no one to turn to, not even their own family members – sometimes especially not their own family members. It's a phase that can leave lasting psychological damage even to the vast majority who survive it (112). Gay children are at extremely high risk for anxiety, confusion, despair, and, yes, some even contemplate suicide. In fact, according to a recent study published in the May 1999 issue of Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, gay and lesbian youth "were 3.4 times as likely to have attempted suicide than straight youth." (487) Can the media play a part to alert parents of gay children to express their love and acceptance before it is too late? So talk to your children and let them know you love them, no matter how they choose to love." Justice Department was investigating the company's March 2006 agreement with Canadian generic drug manufacturer Apotex. The agreement was intended to delay the Apotex's release of an inexpensive generic version of Plavix. Under the terms of Bristol–Myers' ill–conceived agreement with Apotex, BMS offered Apotex $40 million to halt production of the generic Plavix until June 1, 2011. This date was five months before the Plavix patent was set to expire. Bristol–Myers also agreed not to release its own non–branded Plavix until six months after Apotex began to sell its generic version of the blood thinner. When asked to approve the agreement, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and state Attorneys General objected to these provisions. They labelled the Bristol–Myers concession anti–competitive because it assured that Apotex would be the sole market vendor of cheap, generic Plavix for at least six months. So, Bristol–Myers Squibb agreed to remove the anti–competitive provision from the contract. Nevertheless, the FTC began questioning Apotex regarding the revised agreement. During these questioning sessions, Apotex told the federal regulators that Bristol–Myers had given Apotex private assurance that it would not release a general version of Plavix to the market.

Society should place a value on human life, because with out humans society wouldn't exist. Society can do this by finding a common ground number value for everyone. In the article "Hamlet soliloquy", by William Shakespeare, he argues with himself if you should live or die. He views life with so many negative aspects. For example when he says, "The slings and it arrows of outrageous fortune or to take arms against a sea of troubles" (lines 3–4). He means do I commit suicide or do I stay and fight the challenges in my life. Everyone has a place on this earth every one has their own personal battles they have to fight. Amanda Ripley also states that a man named David Gordenstein said, "I would rather devote his life to raising his too young daughter than pursue a lawsuit" (6). Society should just focus on their family and not be worrying about if they're going to get compensated by their loved ones loss. Society should not treat a person's death as a price tag. William Faulkner, in full William Cuthbert Faulkner, original surname Falkner (born September 25, 1897, New Albany, Mississippi, U.S.–died July 6, 1962, Byhalia, Mississippi), American novelist and short–story writer who was awarded the 1949 Nobel Prize for Literature. As the eldest of the four sons of Murry Cuthbert and Maud Butler Falkner, William Faulkner (as he later spelled his name) was well aware of his family background and especially of his great–grandfather, Colonel William Clark Falkner, a colourful if violent figure who fought gallantly during the Civil War, built a local railway, and published a popular romantic novel called The White Rose of Memphis. Faulkner soon moved with his parents to nearby Ripley and then to the town of Oxford, the seat of Lafayette county, where his father later became business manager of the University of Mississippi. As a reluctant student, he left high school without graduating but devoted himself to "undirected reading," first in isolation and later under the guidance of Phil Stone, a family friend who combined study and practice of the law with lively literary interests and was a constant source of current books and magazines. In July 1918, impelled by dreams of martial glory and by despair at a broken love affair, Faulkner joined the British Royal Air Force (RAF) as a cadet pilot under training in Canada, although the November 1918 armistice intervened before he could finish ground school, let alone fly or ... The easiest way to understand what is natural to a Transcendentalist is to comprehend what is not. To Emerson secularization and the development of fascination with science and the intellectualism that grew with it bore dangers to the individual and its personal formation. A development away from the individual experience of one's surroundings and towards the study of empiric studies would create structures of knowledge that are unquestioned by its students who believe that only what is written is true. Gender And Sexuality : Perspectives On Lgbt History Essay Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, several authors have written about the struggles and hardships of those who make up the homosexual or LGTB communities in their daily lives and pursuits, some of these struggles are presented in the book, Gender and Sexuality: Perspectives on LGBT History and Current Issues in a Changing World. All of these authors presented in this book seemed to have a talent for writing and putting their frustrations about their society, but also their take on the world around them. Although she withdrew from treatment, the psychological community heavily impacted the outlook Highsmith had on her personal relationships in her life. The main characters of this novel happen upon one another during a chance encounter on a train. Guy, the protagonist, meets Bruno. There was a lot of discrimination and still is today against "Muslim–looking" travelers, and a huge increase of hate crimes after the events. Some of the long– term effects after 9/11 was an increase in people joining the military, the USA Patriot Act which came into effect October 26th, 2001. There was a huge increase in security which also involved allowing law enforcement agencies to search private data and the right for USA to detain and deport immigrants suspected of terrorists' activities. • 96. Character Analysis Of The Talented Mr Ripley In The Talented Mr. Ripley, Tom Ripley is the main character, and his adventures around the world. Breaking down the story, Ripley is imitating somebody to change his own personality. Ripley is attempting to change his personality not to one particular individual, but rather to a large number of individuals who are more successful and rich, for example, Dickie Greenleaf. Ripley feels the need to mimick people because he feels the need to escape his actual life and identify as someone normal and wealthy so that he could take advantage of their lives. David Grann stresses that when Bourdin(a famous fraud) would talk in Spanish, his whole personality changed to that of a Spaniard. This was additionally the same with communicating in English, his character changed again to an Englishman. Besides, Bourdin had an ability that enabled him to emulate other individuals, or as one individual expressed about him as a stunning actor(Grann, 2010). Grann uncovered how these extortionists are so effective in their cons. The same is available in Ripley. This is seen when he can emulate Greenleaf's penmanship and a large portion of his identity. Ripley uses this skill to create a new life for him where he can actual see himself in Greenleaf's life, meaning, he begins to feel more free as Greenleaf than himself, change his personality to that of less demanding one. As the story continues, Ripley begins to see how much easier it is to impersonate someone other than himself. This, in term, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 100. Is The Theme Of Power In The Film Out Of Sight By Steven... In the film Out of Sight (Steven Soderbergh, 1998) elements of mise en scene, lighting, editing and characters reveal the themes of identity, love and power. The theme of power directly relates to the economic boom in the United States in the 1990s and the population's strive for success. These themes are brought out through the repetitive use of the color red in the film and are also used to relate back to the title. In relation to other American action films released in 1998, Out of Sight is a very fast faced movie much like the rest of them. The fast paced editing style that Soderbergh utilized in the film relates very much to the race to power that was so prevalent in the 1990s. When the economy started to boom, the people of the country ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first shot of this sequence is of Foley sitting in a chair at a desk with a red colored wall behind him. Right away the color red is introduced on the wall as well as on the desk in pens, the top of a yogurt, a potted plant and the wrapper of a power bar. After the man who was at the desk in front of Foley leaves the room, Foley's eyes gaze upon the contents of the desk. The camera pans over the red objects on the desk and then stops to rest upon the wrapper of the power bar. Half eaten and half unwrapped, only the red words "power" are exposed. This is an exceptional shot because it reveals the color red and reveals the word "power", which illustrates the fact that the men in Ripley Enterprise have power and Foley does not. In the next shot, the man at the desk enters the room once again holding a suit and Foley turns away from looking at the power bar to blankly staring at the dull colored suit. This suit represents what Foley could become; a regular guy with a regular job of being a security guard but for him this isn't going to cut it. Foley is obsessed with the idea of being higher class than he ever will be and this is reflected by the way he stared at the "power" on the wrapper; because power is something he desperately wants. It is also a very important strategic commodity and often as political issue. The revenues from oil and gas have driven the economic growth and contributed significantly for the development of Indonesia. In the world, legislations which regulate oil and gas are varies from country to country. In spite of many variations, in general, the upstream oil and gas activities, based on two systems, the production– sharing contracts and the licensing systems. Indonesia was the country that introduced the concept of production–sharing contracts in 1966 (Bindemann, 1999). After the verdict of Indonesian Constitutional Court in 2012 on The Oil and Gas Law, some of the articles were unconstitutional and not legally binding. As a result, the government and the parliament want to revise the oil and gas law and led to the ideas of replacing the production– sharing contract with the licensing system. Nevertheless, before Indonesia adopts the new system, many aspects should be considered in designing legislations. Some of the aspects are the concept of natural resources ownership, revenues for the state, and attractiveness for the investors. Mean while, as the owner of natural resources, the government has the rights to control and regulate petroleum resources. The government would also have to balance its demand for maximizing the revenues from oil and gas and adverse effect on investment climate. Thus, it should be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Alien Movie Essay In the movie Alien the director Ridley Scott creates tension and suspense using a range of filmic techniques which include camera angles, diegetic and non–diegetic sounds and symbolic movie props. These techniques are used in the scene involving the isolated crew members searching for Jones the cat. The camera follows the group that includes the protagonist Ripley with two others, Brett and Parker, symbolizing something is going to happen to them. At the start of the scene, the group is seen walking down a corridor. The frame is a long shot, displaying how narrow the corridor is. The mise–en–scene is dimly lit and tight, creating a claustrophobic atmosphere. There is very little sound; the only diegetic sound comes from the foot– steps clanking ... The next shot is shown from a bird's eye view, possibly the alien's, which demonstrates Brett's vulnerability. Various chains hang from the ceiling, creating diegetic clanking sounds as Brett walks through the room. The only light source comes from high above in a ceiling opening. The camera turns into another point of view shot looking up at the ceiling, showing the dripping water fall. A close up shot of Brett appears as he stands under the water with his eyes closed. He shares half the mise–en–scene with open space in the background. This creates tension as he is in a state of vulnerability and leaves the audience helpless as the scene builds towards the climax, admitting a possibility of something appearing behind him. He hears a noise and walks out of the frame, creating a false climax. As he crouches down to beckon Jones out of his hiding spot, what seems to be another clanking chain comes into view. This is the climax of the scene, as almost instantly the audience realises Brett is in trouble. As the camera shows the alien's face, fast instrumental non–diegetic music begins to play. Brett turns around, watching Jones move back and hearing the diegetic sound of the creature behind him. A close up of Brett's face looking up fearfully is displayed; this shows the audience how superior the alien is and how much it has grown. The scene ends with a range of ... • 121. Gender And Sexuality : Perspectives On Lgbt History Essay Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, many authors have written about the struggles and hardships of those who make up the homosexual or LGTB communities in their daily lives and pursuits, some of these struggles are presented in the book, Gender and Sexuality: Perspectives on LGBT History and Current Issues in a Changing World. All of these authors presented in this book seemed to have a talent for writing and putting their frustrations about their society, but also their take on the world around them. They present their writings in formats which sometimes a majority of society accepted and may not have even realized that the material presented possessed an underlying message of sexuality which deemed it acceptable for most audiences to read. These writers did not only focus on gender topics but focused on other issues that surrounded their daily lives, bringing to the attention of their audiences. LGTB authors, such as Tennessee Williams, Patricia Highsmith, and Langston Hughes, write on the same types of topics, but have different ideas and representations on their specific communities in their literary writings as well as shaped American Literature with their plays, novels and poetry. The word "homosexual" did not come around until 1869 when a "German pamphlet advocating the repeal of an anti–sodomy law" was circulated in Prussia. Its tenet is based on Sigmund Freud's structural model of the psyche which identifies the id, the ego and the superego as the three theoretical constructs in terms of whose activity and interaction mental life is described. According to such model, the irrational, instinctual trends of the mind are the id; the rational, realistic part of the psyche is the ego; and its critical and moralizing function is the superego. By applying such Freudian concepts to Tom Ripley, the protagonist in Patricia Highsmith's The Talented Mr. Ripley, the reader is better able to understand the forces ... (Highsmith 137) Tom's ego helps him to understand that he cannot always get what he wants immediately and that if he had compromised and waited, he might have been happier, and it is this realization that makes him feel isolated and alone. By the end of the novel, Tom's ego resurfaces and he changes his attitude toward others. While before he only thought of what he wanted, he now "...was inspired to spend hours with [Mrs. Cartwright] in the deck chair, talking to her and listening to her talk about her life in England and Greece..." (Highsmith 267) As Tom realizes that the evidence that has been unveiled thus far in the murders is pointing towards his guilt, he begins to reason that his new life may come to an end and he recognizes other people's solitude because he too feels the same way. Branding a group of people as "savages" creates divisions in society that drastically affects how individuals are supposed to interact with these "inferiors." Other words that might have the same the sort of connotation for many in the United States today are "alien," "immigrant worker," or "illegal immigrant." Using these concepts to better understand the complex reality of race relations in the United States, a clearer picture can be painted of why white racial supremacy has been so powerful in all aspects of U.S. American society. The institution of slavery in the United States of America was a process that evolved over generations; an institution which developed in the northern colonies of New England area very differently than the Southern colonies. In the South, slavery as an institution started to enhance the productivity of agriculture. It may not have been the most humane way to grow cotton or sugar cane, but slavery provided essentially "free" labor to white farmers: "The settlers in the Southern States were naturally tempted by the example of the West Indian planters, to make use of these imported black[s] in the service of field labor" ("Slaves and Slavery"). African people were kidnapped from their home, shipped across the Atlantic Ocean, and sold as property in order to do manual labor for white people. Many today are ashamed that the U.S. went through such a cruel period of history when we subjected millions to the atrocities of the slave trade. The virus was first discovered in 1976 near the Ebola River in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo1. The questions persist as to what placebo the control group will receive and whether is it ethical to not administer a potentially life– saving medication to people facing a deadly disease. It has been seen that randomized clinical testing does in fact provide fast and clinically acceptable results with respect to determining the efficacy and safety of a new medication, but these methods may not be appropriate when there are life–threatening diseases decimating populations when there are potentially new medications available that could offer real benefit. The data gathered and examined in the clinical trials presents pharmaceutical companies with the statistical data that suggests whether a new medication or treatment will be effective or not. It is the responsibility of scientists today working within pharmaceutical companies to rethink the standard clinical trial models when faced with deadly diseases to which there are no effective treatments available. The clinical trial model for novel medications should look to provide creative ways to offer subjects in the control group some medical benefit other than just an inactive dosage of the novel medication in question. A majority of medical professionals still question the use of control groups receiving placebo or active control under the grounds that it is unethical for at–risk populations to ...
