Technical Writing Reflective Essay
As the course comes to an end I am left to reflect on what I have learned. Many questions came to mind in the beginning. What is technical
writing? Why is this class required for Nursing? Technical writing gives students the tools to be successful by teaching them how to become an
effective communicator. These past five weeks have opened my eyes and changed my way of thinking. In this memo I will share with you my
reflection of the course through three points; the course, the assignments, and my career.
When I first registered for this course, I did not know what to expect. I thought that technical writing was just another English class that would
require me to write long essays. With every week that passed, I learned that technical writing was not like other English classes. Technical
writing has a unique style that is geared toward its reader. It is the process of presenting work in a unique style, all while being relevant and
clear. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, I discovered that in order to write concisely I had to avoid wordiness. Gurak and Lannon stress that "wordiness is distracting and
detracts from a writer's credibility," (pg 100). This was hard for me to overcome and it took a lot of practice. Another detail that I acquired is
how important it is to adjust how a message is delivered based on the audience. For example, if I was at work and I had to ask the receptionist
to bring me electrodes. I would instead ask them to bring me a heart monitor stickers. Because the receptionist is not used to working with this
product, they may not be aware of the proper name. By acknowledging the audience, I was able to reword my message to better suit my
audience's needs. Creating these assignments has helped me improve my communication and writing style. I now develop the ability to
communicate with my co–workers in a more professional tone. Thus, making me a stronger

Essay : DonT Leave Home Without It?
Introduction American Express introduced the slogan "Don't Leave Home Without It" that wanted consumers to believe that their day would be
hassle–free if they carried an American Express credit card. Nowadays, hassle–free payment means only having to carry a cell phone equipped
with a money transfer software application that accesses funds from the account of our choosing. A truly hassle–free day for leaders would be
the ability to transform our communication so that the attitudes and behaviors of others are modified; allowing us to lead them towards the
desired goals and needs. (Hackman & Johnson, 1991). While we wait for Apple to develop such a communication software application, the

Admitting to knowing very little about mechanics other than my fascination with Discovery Channel car building and restoration shows,
provided me the opportunity to learn about her personal and professional style, and her the opportunity to openly express nervousness about
creating a user guide for a customized software application in 60 days. Her nervousness subsides as was reviewed the package of information I
pulled together for her to learn about the department who would be using the software, the manual process currently in place and a high–level
overview of what exactly a wireless infrastructure company provided in terms or products and services. Next, with the volume of information
to learn and the software application not fully developed, we decided to meet 2 to 3 times a week for 15 to 30 minutes to review progress. The
timing and flexibility of this schedule allows for adjustments in the frequency, amount and content of feedback. Feedback throughout the first
few weeks focused on pointing her in the proper direction to locate additional resources and gage her understanding. She quickly picked–up on
the manual process, but struggled with the logic being used in the development of the new application. At a review meeting, I expressed that it
wasn't necessary to have mastery of the logic merely a basic working knowledge. However, she

Usability And Technical Communication And Usability
In today's world, designing a website has become a piece of cake. With powerful designing tools that are available online, anyone can design
quality websites in a much shorter amount of time. But the question to be asked is, "How would a website designer know that his/her website
would be user friendly?" Usability testing is the answer. By definition, usability testing is the evaluation of a product or service by testing it on
the user. Since the product is for the user, it is necessary that users are involved during the process of creating a product or service. Today,
usability testing is not only limited to the field of information technology, but plays a major role in technical communication. In this report, I
will talk about usability ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The central principle of technical communication has always been user focus. Technical communicators are usually comfortable dealing with
users from both technical and non–technical backgrounds, since they gather information from the technical to communicate with the non–
technical. Technical communicators possess good analytical skills and tend to be familiar with certain standards that involve interface design
principles and style guides (Gaffney 2004). Therefore, they possess skills that are required by usability professionals.
Today, technical communicators are not only writers of user assistance and related documents, but they also work as website designers,
information architects, content specialists and marketing communication specialists, to name a few of the sub fields within the field of
technical communication.
USABILITY TECHNIQUES IN TECHNICAL COMMUNICATION
Technical communicators can incorporate certain usability techniques that help them to ensure a great user experience. These basic usability
techniques are as follows:
 Perform usability test on the user documents:
Technical communicators mostly work offshore, and due to the lengthiness of the user guide, testing the entire document is not feasible most
of the time. Therefore, technical communicators can choose some complicated procedures that are important from a user's perspective, and
perform usability test on these procedures either remotely or one–on–one with the actual users.

Technical Writing And Creative Writing
Many people are unaware that there are many different types of writing. Writing is used in a wide variety of different subjects. Some people
think that left part of the brain is used for technical writing and the right side is used for creative writing (Patel). Technical writing is used in
the fields of science, engineering, technology and the health sciences (Nordquist). Creative writing is used in novels, poems, epics, short
stories, screenplays, songs, television scripts, etc. (YourDictionary). Although they have some minor similarities, the differences between
Technical writing and Creative writing are clear.
Technical Writing Background Technical writing is used in the professional world and is always non–fiction. It helps to provide clear
communication so that the contents are completely understood. Technical writing helps to put your ideas out on the table so that they may be
considered. The only way that you can get patents is by providing exactly what your invention does, so you must be able to communicate
clearly so you can receive a patent. The Society for Technical Communication (STC) offers this definition of technical writing: "the process of
gathering information from experts and presenting it to an audience in a clear, easily understandable form." (Nordquist). "The biggest
difference between technical communication and the other kinds of writing you have done is that technical communication has a somewhat
different focus on audience and purpose."

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Technical Writing
Introduction
Undergraduate students for whom English is a second or third language face a number of challenges with academic writing in general and
Technical Writing in particular. The challenges are even more evident among students who are following a specialized discipline such as
engineering, which requires that they communicate in a discipline–specific genre. These challenges are frustrating to both the lecturers of
Technical Writing and lecturers of discipline–specific courses. One of the challenges is that poor writing skills often result in
miscommunication between the students and their lecturers, yet it is through writing that lecturers mainly assess the performance of their
students.
When the Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST) enrolled it students for the first time in 2012, Technical
Writing and Academic Literacy (TWAL) course was not included in the curriculum. Therefore, the students pursued their programmes without
the language support course. This soon manifested into incoherent writing and the lecturers of discipline–specific courses decried the students'
poor writing skills. The University decided to introduce the TWAL course in January 2014 as a two year course to assist the students to become
better writers for Science, Engineering and Technology, including Information Communication Technology. ... Show more content on

How Is Technical Writing Different From College
One way that technical writing is different from other college writing is the purpose for which it is written. Technical writing is composed to
allow the reader to manage large amounts of information in a way that allows he or she to take action. Other college writing generally has the
purpose to educate, entertain, or share thoughts, opinions, and experiences. Another way that technical writing varies from other college
writing is the style in which the document is written. In technical writing, there are two widely used styles: plain style and persuasive style. In
other college writings, there can be numerous other writing styles, such as expository, descriptive, and narrative, used in the composition.

authority, is the power you have because of your abilities and personal traits. In my opinion, authority is means want to control something in

HTML5 And The Future Of Technical Documentation
HTML5 and the Future of Technical Documentation By: Jessica Morley
May 2015 Introduction: A Crossroad in History
T
echnical writing is at a crossroad in history. Gone are the days when people read technical documentation from print in manuals, books, inserts,
or pamphlets. Likewise, the practice of reading documentation from a CD Rom or desktop software application is quickly becoming a thing of
the past. Today, if people want technical information, they go straight to their browsers to find what they're looking for.
With the advent of handheld smart phones, laptops, and tablets, teamed with the ubiquity of reliable internet connection everywhere, people
demand versatile, responsive, and accessible documentation that can meet their information needs. HTML5, the new HTML standard officially
recommended in October 2014, is the World Wide Web Consortium's (W3C's) answer to this new age of high–speed on–demand information,
and technical writers are beginning to take notice. However, the question remains: should technical writers adapt to this new wave of
technology, and if so, to what extent will HTML5 impact the user experience and the technical writing process?
There are a growing number of technical writers who are just shy of entirely enthusiastic for this brave new world of technology. Peter
Lubbers, an experienced technical writer, published author, and current Senior Program Manager at Google, is one such individual who may

Mrs. Visser Interview paper
Introduction
Before the first day of Technical writing class, I thought it would be one of those classes that were required to take; classes that would reinstate
what previous English classes, high school and freshmen year, taught. As the year progressed, I slowly started to realize that technical writing
was so much integrated in everyday life. I am currently working on my bachelor's degree in Psychology. I aspire to one day become a serial or
forensic psychologist. Forensic psychology is the use of psychology within the justice system; merging the principles of psychology and the
law. The tasks of forensic psychologist include determining whether the defendant was in a sane state of mind when he/she committed the
crime. Evaluation reports, test reports, and interviews are among the forms of technical writing in the forensic Psychologist/ Specialist career
field. The study in forensic psychology is very vast and is divided into different areas including clinical forensic psychology, criminal
investigation, development, and cognitive. The course provides strong foundation in biological, physical, mathematical sciences and other
relevant fields of forensic studies like forensic biology, forensic entomology etc.
I chose to interview Doctor Richard Schmitt, a 30 year Depression, Trauma and PTSD, and Forensics–Criminal & Child Custody, and clinical

When an obstacle enters sensory area, it makes the sensor activated and the relay works in reverse direction making the motors to spin in
anticlockwise direction which being attached to pulleys helps in lifting the two parts of the bridge upwards, this helps that obstacle to pass
below the bridge.
With the same process when it goes out below the bridge, it again enters the exit sensor placed after a certain distance from the bridge, and this
time the relay works in the complete opposite way and the bridge gets in to its original position and the passerby can use the bridge again.

Technical vs. Academic Writing
E–mail: Technical versus academic writing To the staff of XYZ company: XYZ prides itself on its team spirit as a company. As an
organization, we strive to ensure that all employees are able to work in an environment that promotes both productivity and happiness.
Recently, it has come to the attention that some of the rules put into place designed to support our community are being overlooked by some of
our employees. This email is a reminder that ethical behavior and consideration for others is a cornerstone of the philosophy of XYZ. First and
foremost, XYZ has a zero–tolerance policy for workplace bullying, sexual harassment and discrimination. Not only do we strive to be
compliant with federal civil rights law: we also strive to create a workforce in which every employee feels comfortable, and does not feel
threatened based upon his or her gender, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, or other personal characteristics. Please consult your employee
manuals if you have any question about what constitutes bullying, sexual harassment or discrimination; further training on how to recognize
these practices is forthcoming. Remember that jokes and innuendos that might seem appropriate with friends may not be acceptable to make to
your colleagues in the workplace. Just as a professional attitude and demeanor is required regarding how we treat one another in the
workplace, it is also essential to observe professional work standards at all time. Coming in late repeatedly,

Technical Writing Vs Technical Communication
In today's highly technologically oriented world, people have begun to communicate in innovative ways, which include, inter alia, telephones,
cell–telephones, smartphones, handheld electronic devices, tablets, email, video conferencing, instant messaging or text messaging. With the
advent of the information revolution at the turn of the century, the concept of professional communication has been repeatedly redefined to
accommodate the contemporary trends, methods and changes that communication in the corporate world has witnessed. Many of the theories
in professional communication are derived from traditional communication, technical writing, rhetorical theory and ethics. According to Julia
Wood (2004), communication is "a systemic process in which individuals interact with and through symbols to create and interpret meanings."
A technical communicator is responsible for writing documents, designing and creating graphics, designing and creating websites, copyediting
other documents, examining documents for usability, illustrations, and much more. Technical writing is now known as technical
communications because a technical writer does so much more than just write. Technical writing is a specialized form of exposition: that is,
written communication done on the job, especially in fields with specialized vocabularies, such as science, engineering, technology, and the
health sciences. The biggest difference between technical communication and the other kinds of writing you

As technical writers, we will use evaluation reports, daily progress notes, summary reports and discharge plans. Accuracy and attention to
detail in the content of these reports is essential in treating and determining the progress of our patients.
Documentation is the means by which we communicate our treatment to other health professionals and third party payers. In most cases, it is
necessary to communicate effectively to others, orally and in writing the status of the patient. In addition, documentation is an important aspect
of our field because it conveys the status and condition of the patient and our plan and evaluation of said condition to other caregivers. Medical
records will be read by the doctors, nurses and in some cases by those submitting payment to the insurance companies. It is important that as
occupational therapy students we develop documentation skills early and continue to refine these skills throughout our careers.
In order to implement the guidelines for excellent technical communication, we need to remember the three major reasons to be honest as a
communicator. First, we must keep in mind that technical communication is not about using words and pictures to mislead or lie to people. It is
about helping people understand how to make wise choices. "If you lie or mislead, people can be hurt" (Markell 12). Secondly, a patient can

writer should determine who his or her audience will be and for what purposes the audience will use the writer's knowledge. The audience's
intended purposes will determine how broad or narrow to focus the scope of the information. Finally, the writer's prior knowledge of the given
topic will determine how much time should be devoted to research (Pickett, Laster, and Staples 513–14). Each of these considerations will be
discussed at intervals throughout this text.
Ethical practices involving research methods are especially important to those individuals who have a career in education and who use their
experiences with students as a source for their professional writings. Ethical issues, of course, are not limited to the field of education, but
many questionable concerns can certainly present themselves in pedagogical situations. For example, when using a student (or a group of
students) as a source of data for research, it is important to remain aware of his or her vulnerability, dignity and privacy. These three conditions
come into question on a regular basis and are heavily debated by professionals in the field. The disputes are largely due to the fact that

Cognitive Apprenticeship In Case Study
Cases of Cognitive Apprenticeship in First–Year STEM Courses
The overall theme for the cases presented in this paper is the implementation of CAIM in first–year STEM courses at the post–secondary level.
Specifically, each case corresponds to attributes of course work for the SCTCS students. Recently, there has been an increased emphasis on
preparing STEM students to write effectively (SCTCS, 2017). Thus, the study from Kolikant, Gatchell, and Hirsch (2006) is selected to
evaluate the use of CAIM to increase technical writing skills. The second study by Thompson et al. (2016) is selected because the study
utilized the traditional format of STEM courses. In addition, the study by Maigida and Ogwa (2013) is selected because one area of focus ...

Additionally, providing a rubric nullifies the narrative that only instructors can evaluate work, and students are empowered to assess their
performance and help other students understand their assignments (Green & Johnson, 2010), which supports academic and social integration
(Tinto, 1993). In conclusion, the students enjoyed the experience and performed well on the writing assignment (Kolikant et al., 2006).
However, not all instructors are trained in theoretical knowledge to support scientific writing, and the instructors must commit to increased
office hours to assist students with their assignments (Kolikant et al., 2006).
CAIM and the Traditional Course Format
Students in an introductory STEM course are taught using CAIM (Thompson et al., 2016). The weekly lecture or model expertise are
specifically structured to relate to the topic for the weekly lab (2016). During lab, the theoretical concepts are reviewed by a teaching
assistance (TA) (2016). Although it is advantageous for students to learn from the TAs, who are near–peers (Deil–Amen, 2011), faculty
members must allocate time in their schedules to prepare the TAs for lab (Thompson et al., 2016). In addition, students completed quizzes
before lab to provide data on any other concepts that

My Experience At The Technical Side Of Writing
I expected coming into this course and not having a clue what I was doing. I also expected not being able to complete each task properly and
on time. The reason I was expecting these things to happen was because I am not good at the technical side of writing. I am often discouraged
from writing about topics that I do not want to write about; also learning the technical parts of writing can be frustrating for me. I thought that I
was going to be overloaded with chapters to read and a ton of work that I did not want to do; however, this was not the case.
This class was not as bad as I expected. I was able to keep up while still maintaining my grades. I was able to hand my assignments in on time
as well. The McGraw site was easy to navigate and the information was all very helpful as well. In a sense this class met my expectations but
more so in a positive way than a negative one.
I was pretty confident in my writing abilities before the beginning of this class. When I was in school English was one of the only classes that I
could pass with flying colors. I always received compliments from my teachers and friends on my writings. I once had my teacher tell me that
an essay I wrote on a cheesecake was so descriptive it literally made her want to go buy a cheesecake. I was also nervous about my writing
abilities in this class because I had never written a college essay before and I was not sure if I would be able to comprehend new concepts.
I feel my writing abilities have

think when they see my education they will see that I have a lot of potential in any job I go for. The information that will be less important for

Original Technical Writing Guide And Why I Redesigned
The purpose of this memo is to give you a better understanding on what revisions were made to the original technical writing guide and why I
redesigned it in the way that I did.
Summary
This document as whole, was missing a lot of crucial information that I felt needed to be included in a technical writing guide. As a whole, I
believe that my redesign of the document will prove to be more useful and more navigable than the original that was presented. In the
discussion, I will be analyzing each part of the guide that I felt needed to be revised.
Discussion
One of the first things that will stick out from the guide is the color scheme chosen for both the text and background, blue and green text on a
beige background respectively. Since this is supposed to be an academic resource for engineering students, I felt it was most appropriate to
have a white background with black text, thus helping to bolster the professionalism of the document. When I first opened the document, I felt
as if it was very distracting and possibly may have been written for those in high school, but upon further inspection, I discovered that this was
written for students at the University of Cape Town in South Africa. Unless this is a cultural difference of some kind, I feel as if the author
merely wanted to attract readers to use the guide. Even after fixing the color scheme, it was still very hard to navigate the document.
In order to fix the issue of navigability, I changed each of the primary

The standard model of technical writing is a style and structure that has been widely used for about fifty years. This documenting method,
which is usually taught in schools, is how most professional scientists, engineers, and other technical writers choose to write. The main
features of a document that follows the standard model include the following:
Abstract or summary: A brief overview of the document, including its conclusions and recommendations if there are any. An average length for

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Responsive Design
Overview
Gone are the days when a responsive design concept for smartphones, phablet, tablet, or desktop was called a niche industry. Now, the
transformation technology is responsive design where a web page design is automatically adjusted to your smartphone and other devices.
Responsive design is based on the principles of 'Mobile First–Progressive Enhancement' approach.
This white paper discusses the advantages and disadvantages of responsive design, and a technical writer's approach on responsive content.
Advantages of responsive design
With responsive design, the HTML tag remains the same for a mobile device or a desktop, only the CSS changes. The web page elements get
reshuffled. For example, a four–column desktop web page design may be reshuffled to two columns or one ... Show more content on

Disadvantages of responsive design
With responsive design, the loading time of content, image, and other elements is on the higher side because of unnecessary HTML and CSS
code downloaded on a mobile device.
Responsive design being a new concept, its development and implementation takes a longer time.
One website for all devices may not always work for the users.
A technical writer's approach towards responsive content
Content is vital. As a web page adapts to various devices, so should the content. The content should adjust as per the page layout. Because of
responsive design, technical writers can now focus on developing quality content.
Technical writing experts adhere to the 'Mobile First –Progressive Enhancement' approach, because designing the content works well on
mobile devices and later on the desktops.
Following are some of the best practice approach towards responsive content:
Content strategy
Content strategy gets the top priority. Technical writers study the audience analysis and try to understand–What, Who, Why, Where, How
much, and to what extent a user would access the information on a mobile device.

The technical document presented as an example in Node 1, "Vendor–ThirdPartyInvoiceing–BillTrustOverview.pdf", is a good example of
technical communication. The document lines up with all six characteristics of technical communication according to M. Markel.
While it's true that the author of this rhetorical analysis brief and the analyzed technical document are both one and the same, that does not
mean that the analysis presented in this brief should be disregarded as overly biased. Technical writers such as this author must always be
critical of their own work when appropriate so as to not reinforce bad writing habits. It is the opinion of this author that this document is a

It's important to set a customer's expectations on a Service Desk, so being able to tell them what team is handling their concern is crucial. In
doing so, this document certainly does well to help its audience solve a problem.
Next in Markel's list of characteristics, this document does indeed reflect the goals and culture of Uline and the Service Desk specifically. Both
in the verbiage used as well as the writing style, it's clear to the document's audience that the author is a peer. Writing style is abundantly
important at Uline. So much so that each potential applicant is given a writing test as part of their hiring process. This includes every position
at the company. From the new CIO, to the lowly picker and packer in the warehouse, everyone must take the same writing style test. This
practice ensures that the entire company shares a vision and goal in writing technical communication in a variety of formats. This example
document is no exception.
One characteristic which may be harder to prove is the fact that the example document was produced collaboratively. While it's true that
multiple teams and more than one SME were required to gather the key information in this document, the pdf version used does not show the
revision history or the string of emails that went back and forth between the other teams and its author. That being said, what readers can rely

Technical Writing Course Reflective Report
Introduction.
Technical writing is an invaluable course required in the RN to BSN degree plan. The technical writing course educates students on the
awareness of technical communication and provides essential tools that can be implemented into any career. Gurak and Lannon (2016) define
technical communication as a tool to aid in facilitating the exchange of information between professionals, to ultimately establish goals, create
solutions and amend problems as a unit (p. 3). This memo is intended to reflect on the course, writing assignments completed, what I learned
and how it relates back to my nursing profession.

The purpose of this memo is to define technical writing, relate it to my field of healthcare management, and describe the audience (or
audiences) for technical communication in the healthcare setting.
Summary
Technical writing is used daily when communicating between professionals and consumers within a business. Specifically, in a healthcare
setting, technical writing must be successfully implemented for a hospital to run smoothly. It must be easily understood and address a wide

A technical writer's principal task is to assist users who need specific information about a product and provide directions on how to accomplish
a task or other types of activities. Technical writers also translate complex ideas and procedures into simpler writing, making it easier for the

To be clear
To be concise
To be comprehensive
As a healthcare management and leadership major, technical writing plays a very important role in running and operating a hospital or assisted
living facility. Without a clear and concise method of communication between the writer and other healthcare professionals, a hospital will not
function properly. Some methods of technical writing in healthcare include:
Communicating through printed documents or technology, such as medical forms, emails, text messages or social media
Providing written directions about how to do a specific, such as a medical procedure
Translating complex medical terminology into simpler writing, making it easier for employees and patients to comprehend

Re:
Personal reflection of Technical Writing memo While thinking back over the past weeks and reviewing my assignments, activities and
instructor feedback, I am confident I have gained knowledge that will be beneficial to me in both my continued education as well as my
professional career. Enrolling in this class I was unclear as to what to expect, but within the first weekly assignment I could understand the
benefits it would bring to my current endeavors. As the class progressed, I found myself both grateful and devastated for the learning
opportunities. As learning opportunities always provide opportunities to improve, please allow me to expand on each. Perhaps my biggest take
from this course was the need to research my documents to prevent unintended plagiarism. I was raised to not lie, steal or cheat as the most
important values one can possess. With these values in place, other principles will fall into place. Plagiarism, in my definition, is the
combination of all three values in one. Gurak and Lannon list four key principals to avoid unintentional plagiarism including identify sources,
taking accurate notes, understanding how to include the information, and how to document the use of sources (Gurak & Lannon, 2016, p. 406).
In completing my assignments I fully considered my work meeting the requirements and avoiding any inference of plagiarism. With that said, I

User Manual Critique
Many technical fields rely on user manuals, operator manuals and technical manuals to do their day to day tasks at work. Without these
manuals there would be too much information for one person to know to be able to their job. Accidents, personal or equipment would be more
frequent in the work field. That is why manuals are developed, to prevent accidents and to keep people informed of updated information on
equipment. So a well–developed and written manual will help a person succeed at their job, which is why someone needs to critique a manual
before it is released to the public.

warning are easily identified with bold lettering, and a safety triangle (or danger sign). This was a black and white manual, so there were no
color pictures or graphics, which could lead readers to just skim through the pages and not really read the important information.
I did find the manual very easy to understand and follow, however there are a few things that I think that the writers of this manual could have
done. Adding color to the manual does keep the interest of the reader, I found myself wanting to skim through

Technical Writing Reflective Essay

  • 1. Technical Writing Reflective Essay As the course comes to an end I am left to reflect on what I have learned. Many questions came to mind in the beginning. What is technical writing? Why is this class required for Nursing? Technical writing gives students the tools to be successful by teaching them how to become an effective communicator. These past five weeks have opened my eyes and changed my way of thinking. In this memo I will share with you my reflection of the course through three points; the course, the assignments, and my career. When I first registered for this course, I did not know what to expect. I thought that technical writing was just another English class that would require me to write long essays. With every week that passed, I learned that technical writing was not like other English classes. Technical writing has a unique style that is geared toward its reader. It is the process of presenting work in a unique style, all while being relevant and clear. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, I discovered that in order to write concisely I had to avoid wordiness. Gurak and Lannon stress that "wordiness is distracting and detracts from a writer's credibility," (pg 100). This was hard for me to overcome and it took a lot of practice. Another detail that I acquired is how important it is to adjust how a message is delivered based on the audience. For example, if I was at work and I had to ask the receptionist to bring me electrodes. I would instead ask them to bring me a heart monitor stickers. Because the receptionist is not used to working with this product, they may not be aware of the proper name. By acknowledging the audience, I was able to reword my message to better suit my audience's needs. Creating these assignments has helped me improve my communication and writing style. I now develop the ability to communicate with my co–workers in a more professional tone. Thus, making me a stronger ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Essay : DonT Leave Home Without It? Introduction American Express introduced the slogan "Don't Leave Home Without It" that wanted consumers to believe that their day would be hassle–free if they carried an American Express credit card. Nowadays, hassle–free payment means only having to carry a cell phone equipped with a money transfer software application that accesses funds from the account of our choosing. A truly hassle–free day for leaders would be the ability to transform our communication so that the attitudes and behaviors of others are modified; allowing us to lead them towards the desired goals and needs. (Hackman & Johnson, 1991). While we wait for Apple to develop such a communication software application, the path to hassle–free leadership is effective ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Admitting to knowing very little about mechanics other than my fascination with Discovery Channel car building and restoration shows, provided me the opportunity to learn about her personal and professional style, and her the opportunity to openly express nervousness about creating a user guide for a customized software application in 60 days. Her nervousness subsides as was reviewed the package of information I pulled together for her to learn about the department who would be using the software, the manual process currently in place and a high–level overview of what exactly a wireless infrastructure company provided in terms or products and services. Next, with the volume of information to learn and the software application not fully developed, we decided to meet 2 to 3 times a week for 15 to 30 minutes to review progress. The timing and flexibility of this schedule allows for adjustments in the frequency, amount and content of feedback. Feedback throughout the first few weeks focused on pointing her in the proper direction to locate additional resources and gage her understanding. She quickly picked–up on the manual process, but struggled with the logic being used in the development of the new application. At a review meeting, I expressed that it wasn't necessary to have mastery of the logic merely a basic working knowledge. However, she ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Usability And Technical Communication And Usability In today's world, designing a website has become a piece of cake. With powerful designing tools that are available online, anyone can design quality websites in a much shorter amount of time. But the question to be asked is, "How would a website designer know that his/her website would be user friendly?" Usability testing is the answer. By definition, usability testing is the evaluation of a product or service by testing it on the user. Since the product is for the user, it is necessary that users are involved during the process of creating a product or service. Today, usability testing is not only limited to the field of information technology, but plays a major role in technical communication. In this report, I will talk about usability ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The central principle of technical communication has always been user focus. Technical communicators are usually comfortable dealing with users from both technical and non–technical backgrounds, since they gather information from the technical to communicate with the non– technical. Technical communicators possess good analytical skills and tend to be familiar with certain standards that involve interface design principles and style guides (Gaffney 2004). Therefore, they possess skills that are required by usability professionals. Today, technical communicators are not only writers of user assistance and related documents, but they also work as website designers, information architects, content specialists and marketing communication specialists, to name a few of the sub fields within the field of technical communication. USABILITY TECHNIQUES IN TECHNICAL COMMUNICATION Technical communicators can incorporate certain usability techniques that help them to ensure a great user experience. These basic usability techniques are as follows:  Perform usability test on the user documents: Technical communicators mostly work offshore, and due to the lengthiness of the user guide, testing the entire document is not feasible most of the time. Therefore, technical communicators can choose some complicated procedures that are important from a user's perspective, and perform usability test on these procedures either remotely or one–on–one with the actual users.  ... • 7. Technical Writing And Creative Writing Many people are unaware that there are many different types of writing. Writing is used in a wide variety of different subjects. Some people think that left part of the brain is used for technical writing and the right side is used for creative writing (Patel). Technical writing is used in the fields of science, engineering, technology and the health sciences (Nordquist). Creative writing is used in novels, poems, epics, short stories, screenplays, songs, television scripts, etc. (YourDictionary). Although they have some minor similarities, the differences between Technical writing and Creative writing are clear. Technical Writing Background Technical writing is used in the professional world and is always non–fiction. It helps to provide clear communication so that the contents are completely understood. Technical writing helps to put your ideas out on the table so that they may be considered. The only way that you can get patents is by providing exactly what your invention does, so you must be able to communicate clearly so you can receive a patent. The Society for Technical Communication (STC) offers this definition of technical writing: "the process of gathering information from experts and presenting it to an audience in a clear, easily understandable form." (Nordquist). "The biggest difference between technical communication and the other kinds of writing you have done is that technical communication has a somewhat different focus on audience and purpose." ... • 9. Advantages And Disadvantages Of Technical Writing Introduction Undergraduate students for whom English is a second or third language face a number of challenges with academic writing in general and Technical Writing in particular. The challenges are even more evident among students who are following a specialized discipline such as engineering, which requires that they communicate in a discipline–specific genre. These challenges are frustrating to both the lecturers of Technical Writing and lecturers of discipline–specific courses. One of the challenges is that poor writing skills often result in miscommunication between the students and their lecturers, yet it is through writing that lecturers mainly assess the performance of their students. When the Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST) enrolled it students for the first time in 2012, Technical Writing and Academic Literacy (TWAL) course was not included in the curriculum. Therefore, the students pursued their programmes without the language support course. This soon manifested into incoherent writing and the lecturers of discipline–specific courses decried the students' poor writing skills. The University decided to introduce the TWAL course in January 2014 as a two year course to assist the students to become better writers for Science, Engineering and Technology, including Information Communication Technology. ... • 13. How Is Technical Writing Different From College One way that technical writing is different from other college writing is the purpose for which it is written. Technical writing is composed to allow the reader to manage large amounts of information in a way that allows he or she to take action. Other college writing generally has the purpose to educate, entertain, or share thoughts, opinions, and experiences. Another way that technical writing varies from other college writing is the style in which the document is written. • 17. HTML5 And The Future Of Technical Documentation HTML5 and the Future of Technical Documentation By: Jessica Morley May 2015 Introduction: A Crossroad in History T echnical writing is at a crossroad in history. Gone are the days when people read technical documentation from print in manuals, books, inserts, or pamphlets. Likewise, the practice of reading documentation from a CD Rom or desktop software application is quickly becoming a thing of the past. Today, if people want technical information, they go straight to their browsers to find what they're looking for. With the advent of handheld smart phones, laptops, and tablets, teamed with the ubiquity of reliable internet connection everywhere, people demand versatile, responsive, and accessible documentation that can meet their information needs. HTML5, the new HTML standard officially recommended in October 2014, is the World Wide Web Consortium's (W3C's) answer to this new age of high–speed on–demand information, and technical writers are beginning to take notice. However, the question remains: should technical writers adapt to this new wave of technology, and if so, to what extent will HTML5 impact the user experience and the technical writing process? There are a growing number of technical writers who are just shy of entirely enthusiastic for this brave new world of technology. Peter Lubbers, an experienced technical writer, published author, and current Senior Program Manager at Google, is one such individual who may tip the scale on the enthusiasm ... Please consult your employee manuals if you have any question about what constitutes bullying, sexual harassment or discrimination; further training on how to recognize these practices is forthcoming. Remember that jokes and innuendos that might seem appropriate with friends may not be acceptable to make to your colleagues in the workplace. Technical Writing Vs Technical Communication In today's highly technologically oriented world, people have begun to communicate in innovative ways, which include, inter alia, telephones, cell–telephones, smartphones, handheld electronic devices, tablets, email, video conferencing, instant messaging or text messaging. With the advent of the information revolution at the turn of the century, the concept of professional communication has been repeatedly redefined to accommodate the contemporary trends, methods and changes that communication in the corporate world has witnessed. Many of the theories in professional communication are derived from traditional communication, technical writing, rhetorical theory and ethics. According to Julia Wood (2004), communication is "a systemic process in which individuals interact with and through symbols to create and interpret meanings." A technical communicator is responsible for writing documents, designing and creating graphics, designing and creating websites, copyediting other documents, examining documents for usability, illustrations, and much more. Technical writing is now known as technical communications because a technical writer does so much more than just write. Technical writing is a specialized form of exposition: that is, written communication done on the job, especially in fields with specialized vocabularies, such as science, engineering, technology, and the health sciences. Documentation is the means by which we communicate our treatment to other health professionals and third party payers. In most cases, it is necessary to communicate effectively to others, orally and in writing the status of the patient. In addition, documentation is an important aspect of our field because it conveys the status and condition of the patient and our plan and evaluation of said condition to other caregivers. Medical records will be read by the doctors, nurses and in some cases by those submitting payment to the insurance companies. It is important that as occupational therapy students we develop documentation skills early and continue to refine these skills throughout our careers. In order to implement the guidelines for excellent technical communication, we need to remember the three major reasons to be honest as a communicator. First, we must keep in mind that technical communication is not about using words and pictures to mislead or lie to people. It is about helping people understand how to make wise choices. When beginning one's research for any project, four basic issues should be considered: audience, purpose, scope and prior knowledge. The writer should determine who his or her audience will be and for what purposes the audience will use the writer's knowledge. The audience's intended purposes will determine how broad or narrow to focus the scope of the information. Finally, the writer's prior knowledge of the given topic will determine how much time should be devoted to research (Pickett, Laster, and Staples 513–14). Each of these considerations will be discussed at intervals throughout this text. Ethical practices involving research methods are especially important to those individuals who have a career in education and who use their experiences with students as a source for their professional writings. Ethical issues, of course, are not limited to the field of education, but many questionable concerns can certainly present themselves in pedagogical situations. For example, when using a student (or a group of students) as a source of data for research, it is important to remain aware of his or her vulnerability, dignity and privacy. • 54. Original Technical Writing Guide And Why I Redesigned The purpose of this memo is to give you a better understanding on what revisions were made to the original technical writing guide and why I redesigned it in the way that I did. Summary This document as whole, was missing a lot of crucial information that I felt needed to be included in a technical writing guide. As a whole, I believe that my redesign of the document will prove to be more useful and more navigable than the original that was presented. In the discussion, I will be analyzing each part of the guide that I felt needed to be revised. Discussion One of the first things that will stick out from the guide is the color scheme chosen for both the text and background, blue and green text on a beige background respectively. Since this is supposed to be an academic resource for engineering students, I felt it was most appropriate to have a white background with black text, thus helping to bolster the professionalism of the document. When I first opened the document, I felt as if it was very distracting and possibly may have been written for those in high school, but upon further inspection, I discovered that this was written for students at the University of Cape Town in South Africa. Unless this is a cultural difference of some kind, I feel as if the author merely wanted to attract readers to use the guide. Even after fixing the color scheme, it was still very hard to navigate the document. In order to fix the issue of navigability, I changed each of the primary ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The technical document presented as an example in Node 1, "Vendor–ThirdPartyInvoiceing–BillTrustOverview.pdf", is a good example of technical communication. The document lines up with all six characteristics of technical communication according to M. Markel. While it's true that the author of this rhetorical analysis brief and the analyzed technical document are both one and the same, that does not mean that the analysis presented in this brief should be disregarded as overly biased. Technical writers such as this author must always be critical of their own work when appropriate so as to not reinforce bad writing habits. It's important to set a customer's expectations on a Service Desk, so being able to tell them what team is handling their concern is crucial. In doing so, this document certainly does well to help its audience solve a problem. Next in Markel's list of characteristics, this document does indeed reflect the goals and culture of Uline and the Service Desk specifically. Both in the verbiage used as well as the writing style, it's clear to the document's audience that the author is a peer. Writing style is abundantly important at Uline. So much so that each potential applicant is given a writing test as part of their hiring process. This includes every position at the company. From the new CIO, to the lowly picker and packer in the warehouse, everyone must take the same writing style test. This practice ensures that the entire company shares a vision and goal in writing technical communication in a variety of formats. This example document is no exception. One characteristic which may be harder to prove is the fact that the example document was produced collaboratively. While it's true that multiple teams and more than one SME were required to gather the key information in this document, the pdf version used does not show the revision history or the string of emails that went back and forth between the other teams and its author. • 72. Personal Reflection Of Technical Writing To: Dr. Dianne Pearman From: Whitney Wallace Date: August 3, 2017 Re: Personal reflection of Technical Writing memo While thinking back over the past weeks and reviewing my assignments, activities and instructor feedback, I am confident I have gained knowledge that will be beneficial to me in both my continued education as well as my professional career. Enrolling in this class I was unclear as to what to expect, but within the first weekly assignment I could understand the benefits it would bring to my current endeavors. As the class progressed, I found myself both grateful and devastated for the learning opportunities. As learning opportunities always provide opportunities to improve, please allow me to expand on each. Perhaps my biggest take from this course was the need to research my documents to prevent unintended plagiarism. I was raised to not lie, steal or cheat as the most important values one can possess. With these values in place, other principles will fall into place. Plagiarism, in my definition, is the combination of all three values in one. Gurak and Lannon list four key principals to avoid unintentional plagiarism including identify sources, taking accurate notes, understanding how to include the information, and how to document the use of sources (Gurak & Lannon, 2016, p. 406). In completing my assignments I fully considered my work meeting the requirements and avoiding any inference of plagiarism. With that said, I was wrong. First up in my ... Essay on User Manual Critique User Manual Critique ENG/221 September 29, 2011 User Manual Critique Many technical fields rely on user manuals, operator manuals and technical manuals to do their day to day tasks at work. Without these manuals there would be too much information for one person to know to be able to their job. Accidents, personal or equipment would be more frequent in the work field. That is why manuals are developed, to prevent accidents and to keep people informed of updated information on equipment. So a well–developed and written manual will help a person succeed at their job, which is why someone needs to critique a manual before it is released to the public. All steps are marked with numbers and all changes in topics are marked with a paragraph heading title. Conciseness The reading of each instruction leaves a person with no doubt on what they are supposed to do, and when a step is done and what step to take next. Each topic is short and to the point and clear. Consistency All paragraphs, heading and graphics are consistent with all material that has been developed in this manual. Graphics are simple and can be easily followed. Document Design Graphic's show a picture of the drill or parts of the drill with arrows and hands showing how to do a particular part, such as inserting the battery on to the drill. If there was any real issue with this manual is that there is not enough white space. Sometimes you can get lost because each paragraph and heading is so close together. The manual though is very organized, with numbering and header separations. All hazards and warning are easily identified with bold lettering, and a safety triangle (or danger sign). This was a black and white manual, so there were no color pictures or graphics, which could lead readers to just skim through the pages and not really read the important information. I did find the manual very easy to understand and follow, however there are a few things that I think that the writers of this manual could have done. Adding color to the manual does keep the interest of the reader, I found myself wanting to skim through ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
