Eating Habits And Culinary Practices
Food ways can be defined as: "the eating habits and culinary practices of a people, region, or
historical period." My daily food ways consist of having three main course meals throughout the
day; Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner. My current food ways are based off what is available at the
Lawrence dining hall and Sykes dining hall. For breakfast I tend to always have the same foods
every day, either being an omelet, cereal, yogurt with granola, and the occasional banana.
Considering being a college student it's hard to come by a variety of foods you can have for
breakfast especially when you're in a rush to your next class. Lunch has become quite the difficulty
to keep on a regular schedule with my classes all being back–to–back during lunch time. But, on the
days I do have time for lunch I always have a big bowl of salad consisting of some leafy greens,
onions, celery, carrots, croutons, and all topped with my favorite dressing balsamic vinaigrette.
Dinner time is my favorite time of the day to eat because it's right after practice and everyone from
the team is all siting together scarfing down dishes after dishes of food to replenish our staving
stomachs after a long practice. At dinner time, I always make sure to eat a protein source and heavy
carbohydrate to refuel my body so depending on what is available I'll always have a wheat Italian
sandwich wrap with some pasta. I also make sure to have some fruit along with a small side salad.
At the end of dinner, depending on the

Thanksgiving: Race And Social Issues
Thanksgiving is a the day we celebrate everything we are grateful. In which comes the controversial
topic of how thanksgiving became what it is today. overall , I thinking slaughtering turkeys for a
specific day is a horrific act and is considered a social justice issue. While on the contrary I do not
believe it is a race and social issue mainly based off the history of thanksgiving. There is harm to the
turke I think the reason it is such a controversial topic is the fact we are solely killing turkeys to
interpret a dinner served back when. It is also a social issue because of the amount of turkeys being
killed. As well as what thanksgiving could stand for. In one of the videos " Meet the rescued turkeys

Research Paper On Charlie Brown Thanksgiving Dinner
Charlie Brown is hosting a Thanksgiving dinner for his friends. Snoopy and the little bird helped
him out by setting up the table and by making the food. However, Peppermint Patty doesn't enjoy
the food and is displeased with how the dinner is set up. Meanwhile, another one of his guests
explains to Patty that she has to be grateful for what she has and shouldn't complain. Peppermint
Patty soon feels bad for what she had said and has the other girl apologize for her since she can not
do it herself. Nevertheless, Charlie Brown soon accepts it and is able to invite them over to his
grandmother's house for an actual dinner. The purpose of this show is to explain others that they
have to be grateful for what they have. A part of the show that

Uncle Sams Thanksgiving Dinner Analysis
In "Uncle Sam's Thanksgiving Dinner" and "America The Land of Opportunity", both cartoons
show different aspects of immigration. America was founded by immigrants. Our brave and heroic
founding fathers set out to create a new nation. The founding fathers wanted to get away from the
burdens in England and establish a new colony unlike any around. This nation would be free of
unjust rule and any tyranny. They wanted citizens of the country to have rights that would never be
taken away. We all came from Immigrants at some point in time. People left where they lived due to
hardships and wanted best for their families. If Immigration didn't exist, America wouldn't exist. The
first cartoon is titled, "Uncle Sam's Thanksgiving Dinner". This ... Show more content on

This cartoon paved the way towards a greater tomorrow. In the second cartoon, it shows two
immigrants paused in front of a huge wall. This cartoon is more serious. A sign above them reads
"America, the land of opportunity, prosperity, freedom". The top of the wall is lined with razor–
sharp barbed wire. The immigrants are immediately greeted by a voice behind a reinforced door.
The guard peering through says, "Sorry...we've filled our immigrant quota. Try next year". Instead of
welcoming immigrants, we're turning them away. On the other side of the wall, an American Flag
can be seen. The American Flag is a symbol of peace and opportunity, yet we're not extending that
to many immigrants. The United States has changed its ways drastically from when it was founded.
It takes too long to become an American citizen, five years should be brought down significantly.
Immigrants make up the United States, they work hard to earn a living each day. Just like the sign,
America is known as the land of opportunity. The wall shown in this cartoon shows just one of the
many blockades America has. The immigrant quota isn't giving immigrants many opportunities. We
discriminate against those who are here for a better life. They'll do anything they can to escape the
hardships of the country that they're coming from. These immigrants are forced to become
"Americanized". Americans want immigrants to know English, value "American"

Essay About Thanksgiving
My first Thanksgiving Day celebration
There are too many traditions in the world, and each country has specific holidays to celebrate
determinate event. When I came to here in March of 2016 I didn't know about what is to celebrate
Christmas, Independence Day or Thanksgiving. By beginning of November in 2015 I heard about
Thanksgiving Day and what it means. As soon I knew the reason of why we celebrate Thanksgiving
I started to show interest and motivation about this day. I like to be a grateful person, so I was very
excited to see how the Americans celebrate this date and to be part of it. We started to do all the
preparations for the dinner like 15 days before. The people who were going to that dinner were my
friends, my parents, my boyfriend and me; so we made a reunion to give to each one a specific
assignment. Everybody bought all the necessaries supplies like food, cover table, plates, and cups,
all designed with thanksgiving pictures. As the date got closer, I was more excited. One reason for
this was that I live in a place where almost everybody is American, and they have this wonderful
spirit of traditions that make you part of it, even if you are not an American. Well, there were just a
few days remaining for the celebration and we went to the house where the dinner was going to
occur, to clean and leave everything ready for the big day. One day before Thanksgiving I went to
the supermarket and I seem everyone like crazy. The people were

The Differences Between Ritual And Rituals
There is a video with unity leaders, they were asked to define what a ritual means to them. Several
of them stated that rituals are very meaningful and a way to communicate and express yourself. One
of the unity leaders thinks that we have gotten away from our rituals and we need to figure out how
to get them back. They also believe that a ritual can define who you are and that it can bring comfort
to have a ritual. Rituals can be outward expressions and they can be anything that you bring
meaning to (What is Ritual? [Video file]. (n.d.).
Ritual vs Routine Rituals and routines can serve the same purpose, but they do however have
different meanings. Rituals are meaningful activities that are practiced by families every day or
throughout generations. Rituals should be relaxing events that bring joy to families. Routines are
more like habits that form every day. For example, brushing your teeth in the morning or taking
showers. There is not a meaning behind a routine, they are just actions that are performed
(Difference Between Ritual and Routine | Meaning, Usage, Examples, 2017). In table1. 1, it will
show the differences between rituals and routines (Schuck, 1977).

Informative Essay About Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving is a celebrated holiday around the United States, it started many years ago, and still
continues to be celebrated to this day! It's almost that time of year again and people are already
starting to get ready for the holiday. Thanksgiving is an older holiday, it was first celebrated with the
Pilgrims and the Indians. Back then, they didn't even eat turkey! Instead they ate seal and lobster.
But to this day, we eat pumpkin pie, just as they did. We also have lots of varieties of food and
used/use salt for our everyday meals. Could you imagine eating everything you ate for dinner, on
Thanksgiving for breakfast? Every family has Thanksgiving traditions, but not everybody's are the
same. I talk to three of my classmates and gathered information about what they do on
Thanksgiving. The first person I talked to was Lilly. Her family's traditions are very similar to ours.
She flies kites with her cousins, gathers in a large group, and they serve turkey! What is a little
peculiar to me is that she doesn't like turkey! Who doesn't like turkey? ... Show more content on

race to get in line first! I talked to one last person, Jack. His family also enjoys watching football.
Jack says he has a large family so, they have a giant feast every single year. Which can be frustrating
at times but other times is a blast! Jack's family also serves both ham and turkey, just as we do at my
house! When his family lines up to be served, it must be a really long line! But for all the

Uncle Sam's Thanksgiving Dinner: Political Cartoon Analysis
Two political cartoons, "School Begins" and "Uncle Sam's Thanksgiving Dinner", published by
different artists, avail of distinct examples to demonstrate America's attempt to civilize ethnic and
racial groups as a means of granting them social acceptance. "School Begins" exhibits Uncle Sam as
the dominant white American male in the center. In the cartoon, Americans are a part of the well–
disciplined class studying books labeled with their state's name and are neatly arranged, juxtaposed
with the disorderly class seated in the front made up of the "Philippines, Hawaii, Porto Rico, and
Cuba." The territories are depicted as dark–skinned and undomesticated, serving the racist and
denigrating image that justified the right to govern the new territories ... Show more content on

The cartoon displays an African–American boy washing the windows behind Uncle Sam, by the
door a Native American with a feather sticking out of his hair, is trying to read a book upside down,
and a Chinese boy outside the doorway of the classroom is evidently excluded. Essentially, every
nonwhite individual in the cartoon is rendered with exaggerated physical features that establish their
racial identity. These characters are important because they show the ways the American ideal
includes some while simultaneously denying others. The territories acquired from the Mexican–
American War in 1848, California, Texas, Arizona and New Mexico, are represented as quiet,
studious white Americans, with the exception of Alaska being the only nonwhite disciplined student.
The territories Uncle Sam is trying to properly discipline, the Philippines, Hawaii, Porto Rico and
Cuba, are represented with dark skin and dramatized facial expressions and features, revealing a
clear racial bias. Although the cartoon is proposing that what the United States is doing with these
new territories is a good thing, there is a clear bias towards white people being civilized and people
with darker complexions being either ignorant or uncivilized. This racial bias depicted in the
uncivilized nature of the territories represented in the cartoon is used to validate the surge of
imperialism within the United

Thanksgiving Day is a national holiday for the United States. It is the day of family gathering,
thankfulness, and day of feast. However, this holiday is not celebrated in any other countries.
Therefore, preparing food from the turkey to side dishes would be difficult for a foreigner, but if
shown how the meals are cooked makes it easier to replicate. One of my favorite parts of the meal is
the gravy. Gravy makes the meal more flavorful as it can be used on the turkey, mashed potatoes,
stuffing, dinner rolls and afterwards on turkey sandwiches. Preparing homemade gravy is a tedious
process, you would have to cook down various parts of the turkey and use just enough ingredients to
get a perfect consistency and taste. There are some companies ... Show more content on

However, homemade dressing (i.e. gravy) has been difficult for me to prepare. Therefore, I wanted
to take the easy way out and find that brand of dressing that has the taste of homemade. In my quest
to find the perfect store bought gravy, I first started to use the packet brand of gravy by McCormick.
This gravy was too thick and had a strong flour taste that did not appeal to my taste buds. After
trying various ways of preparing the packet gravy, I then decided to try a different product. The next
gravy I experimented with was the kind that comes in a glass container, prepared by H.J. Heinz
Company. This product can be found at nearly every well–known grocery store. The gravy is
readymade, it just needed to be heated and used straight out of the bottle. It is different from the
packet gravy by McCormick because it does not require broth or water to turn it into gravy. H.J.
Heinz gravy was ok out of the bottle, but it was a watered down and needed additional flavorings to
get that homemade taste. Therefore, I began to search cooking websites and food forums to find
advice and comments posted by the internet community. This process took a while. In the meantime,
I would try to make gravy whenever it is possible in order to differentiate what tasted the best or

Analyzing James Miller's 'Acting Our Culture'
A picture says a thousand words. In "Acting Our Culture", a book edited by James miller, we get
this representation clearly from Norman Rockwell and John Holyfield in their Thanksgiving visual
representation paintings. Both artist provide us with their own interpretation and view of the
thanksgiving holiday depicting in both what they believe the holiday season is about. 3 main themes
in these pieces are family, color, and culture the root of both paintings, this being what ties as well as
separates them as works of art.
The first thing you will notice between the paintings are the family's presented. The presence of
their relation is evident due to a few factors. In Rockwell we get the differences in age from the little
kids present at the table to the middle aged couple on the left side of the photo (Rockwell), then in
Holyfield's we get the same view of age difference across the table representing the occasion to be a
gathering of family. They also share the same main meal that being the turkey also with vegetables
and other side plates. But once we look closer at the family a deeper level of contrast is revealed. If
you pay close attention to the painting the scene of family changes between both pieces. In

Thanksgiving Reflection Paper
In order to understand tradition one has to fully immerse themselves into a situation where tradition
is taking place. Thanksgiving is the perfect opportunity to explore what it means to celebrate, the
holiday is an American holiday only and is celebrated in a multitude of different ways with an
endless amount of traditional flare that changes from family to family. I have many biases as to what
the Thanksgiving holiday looks like. Political rants, family members fighting over things from the
past, children running around creating chaos. I chose my family to observe because I wanted to gain
somewhat of an outsider perspective on what it was like to be around my family at the holidays.
Obviously I have been going to Thanksgiving with these same people my whole life but I wanted to
be able to look at the gathering in a different way and understand in a more significant way why the
way my family celebrates may be different from how I've seen other people's families celebrate.
As I step toward the house that I have known my entire life I find myself inspecting every inch of
the outer areas. The pile of crunchy, dull colored leaves that had been pushed to a corner as if not to
interfere with the delicately arranged garden that surrounded the lands perimeter just along the
sidewalk. The flowers in the surrounding garden have all died and are merely brown branches
standing tall and spiked awaiting the spring season. The entryway walls are consumed with long

As Thanksgiving approaches, nearly every person can recall a time when he witnessed a stressed out
family member panic to prepare the best possible Thanksgiving dinner. The stresses of cooking
Thanksgiving dinner usually begin during the planning and shopping phase. During the planning

such as, "Is this the cranberry sauce that Aunt Cindy likes," and, "What do I need for Grandma's

gravy that is a little too watery causing a near panic attack. Finally, during the setup phase of

The Cadet Mess Manager, Executive Chef, one to two Cook Supervisors, Bakery Supervisor, and
USCC Dietitian create a menu that follows guidelines set by AR40–25. The guidelines suggest that a
moderately active twenty–year–old male requires around 3250 calories per day over the course of
three meals and the Basics of the Cadet Mess Menu also states that the meals will consist of 15–20%
protein, 55–60% carbohydrate, and 25–30% fat. Although it may be difficult not to sacrifice quality
for quantity, the 6% increase in USMA's budget can help provide not only nutritional meals that will
help bring cadets to their peak performance capabilities, but do so with meals that cadets enjoy by
hosting larger scale taste tests, buying locally grown produce, and hiring more workers.
To bring new variety to the current menu, the mess hall staff should hold a larger scale taste testing
of the suggested menu item to obtain more quality feedback. Currently, outlined in the Cadet Mess
Hall Taste Tests, taste tests are conducted by using a random selection of sixty cadets and are held
three to four times during the Fall and Spring semesters. With the increased budget, West Point can
provide more taste tests, and serve the item to the entire corps. As the waiting staff brings the food to
each table, they can also give the table commandant a paper that rates the new menu

The Black Friday Takeover Essay
"Mommy, why didn't I get what I wanted for Thanksgiving this year?" This question seems absurd
in a modern–day context, but in the future, it could be a question that is asked much too often. With
holiday–themed advertisements in the media and holiday discount deals already visible on the
shelves, it is no wonder that Black Friday and the holiday shopping season are creeping up closer
and closer to Thanksgiving. Black Friday is a popular phrase used to describe the chaotic shopping
frenzy that takes place every year on the Friday after Thanksgiving. In recent years, the chaos of this
so–called "holiday" has only escalated; consumers are trampling one another to get the best deals,
and retailers are scrambling to keep up with their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many Thanksgiving celebrations today are still centered around getting together with family and
friends and giving thanks. The term Black Friday was first used, according to US News Digital
Weekly, in 1869 in reference to a stock market crash on the day after Thanksgiving that year. US
News Digital Weekly says that it was again used in 1951 to describe the high number of workers
that skipped work that day. Eventually, employers started giving workers the day after Thanksgiving
as a vacation day. In turn, many of the workers used this day to start their shopping for the holiday
season, making the day after the Thanksgiving a day that many stores started making huge profits. If
a business has a profitable market, they are considered "in the black". This is likely what brought
about the modern meaning of the phrase Black Friday. However, it wasn't until 2004 that Black
Friday was officially considered the "biggest shopping day of the year...according to data from retail
analyst ShopperTrak," (Tozzi). Today, stores everywhere have Black Friday sales with almost
comically low prices on merchandise to entice potential customers and drive them away from
competing stores.
Recently, America's obsession with Black Friday has generated various opinions on the day itself, its
proximity to Thanksgiving, and the morality of the holiday shopping season. Many view
Thanksgiving as a sacred holiday and are appalled that retailers would even consider the idea of

In America November is all fall, cold weather, and Thanksgiving. People enjoy Thanksgiving, for all

Thanksgiving different. Some go on vacation, visit family, and the most common one to celebrate
with having a big family dinner. The first thing that comes to mind when thinking of Thanksgiving
is a big turkey, pilgrims and Indians. Although we enjoy thanksgiving, many people do not know the
background of Thanksgiving or the true story of Thanksgiving. The first Thanksgiving was in
November 1621, when the pilgrim's first corn harvest was successful, with the help of the Indians.
The feast was organized by governor William Bradford and he too invited native American allies,
one being Wampanoag Chief Massasoit. The pilgrims didn't use "Thanksgiving" to describe this
three–day feast. No record exists of what was on the banquet's menu. Governor Bradford wrote in

Thanksgiving is a holiday when the whole family gets together and feast. In my family this is when

Restaurant And Thanksgiving Restaurant
During the Thanksgiving season the Hospitality industry is in the middle of one of their busiest
times of the year. This is the truest for restaurants and hotels, as many people gather around with
family and go out to dinner more often, or when family flies into town and stays in a hotel. This
busy time of year shows many of the same patterns annually, as well as cause some problems along
the way.
Every year the restaurant industry experiences many more and larger groups of people around the
Thanksgiving holiday. These larger groups make management a little more difficult as traditionally,
food takes a little longer, service is more rushed, and everyone including employees and customers
are a little on edge. However, people are escaping the stress of Thanksgiving dinner by letting the
restaurants do all the work. A study showed that in 2011 six percent of those surveyed said they
planned to eat out for Thanksgiving. Of the people who eat Thanksgiving at home in 2017, 9 percent
said they would pick up parts of their meals, and four percent said they'd buy a complete meal. That
means nearly one in four diners are not going to do all the work of fixing Thanksgiving dinner. In
another survey thirty–one percent said they'd eat in a restaurant where they traditionally go on
Thanksgiving Day. Thirty percent said they'd go to a restaurant that they use for special occasions.

Thanksgiving Tradition Analysis
For families across the United States, Thanksgiving is a holiday to come together with family and
loved ones to celebrate the good things life has to offer. Before analyzing my own family's
Thanksgiving celebration, I thought that our type of festivities were normal to most families. While
some of the traditions of the holiday say something about our society as a whole, I was also able to
view the implicit meanings of my family's specific actions. This analysis made me realize that while
our society is attempting to move forward and break norms, they are still heavily present within our
everyday subconscious actions. Although I am grateful I was able to come to this realization, it
saddened me to see that way my family celebrated the holiday ... Show more content on

Although I was well versed and knowledgeable on the topic due to my studies in Design this
quarter, I chose to not speak up and join the debate because I did not view myself on the same level
as both my brother and my cousin. Due to me being the youngest, I felt as though I was less
intellectual and powerful than them. This depicts how power and dominance allows for hierarchy,
even within families. The conversations that I engaged in were also less intellectually stimulating,
with my family mostly asking about how college was, rather than my opinions on deeper matters.
This shows that even their treatment of me as the youngest reiterates the implicit hierarchical
structure. The different treatment between older members of my family and me is similar to George
Gmelch's piece, Birthdays, Basketball, and Breaking Bread: Negotiating with Class in
Contemporary Black America. The people of higher economic and social status in this piece treat
their friends of lower status and higher status differently, similar to how my family treats members
of different ages. The act of unequal treatment illustrates how our society continues to promote
status and hierarchy, even though we often say we disapprove of these

Instea's Argumentative Essay: Thanksgiving Dinner At Home
Thanksgiving dinner can be fun and nerve–wracking, especially when a long trip is involved. It is
the perfect excuse to miss work or school and to run away from any responsibilities. The outer
world is exposed and the exposure is a breath of fresh air compared to confines of home. As a valet
driver in Nashville working seven days a week, it is a blessing to have time off and to spend that
time wisely. Every year, the Thanksgiving road trip consists of music playing, large sodas and bags
of chips within reach, and keeping an eye peeled of any interesting stops along the way. Hunger will
set in soon if the human body is only running on chips and soda, thankfully Thanksgiving dinner is
only 120 miles away! The trip is bound to be fun, but as the destination gets closer, anxiety sets in
about the quality of the food and what memories will be created this year.
Most drivers going from Nashville to Jackson, Tennessee, it is conventional wisdom to take

Being the two most popular options in the family, it is bound to run out quick and must be a priority!
The mashed potatoes at first glance looked amazing, and in past years, the family had a big
reputation for having the best mashed potatoes. This year's potatoes lack the right amount of buttery
and salty goodness. The texture of the potatoes is clumpy where it is supposed to be smooth and
rich. Another anomaly includes the lack of yellow, specifically macaroni and cheese, an important
staple of Thanksgiving dinner. The cause of the lackluster options at the dinner table is the absence
of a few family members. The collective spirit that resides within the family during the holiday
cooking was not at its full potential this year. This brings up questions about the quality of future
dinners and how the family can be brought closer

Informative Essay On Thanksgiving
Did you know that Pilgrims and the Indians made the day of Thanksgiving on November 29 1623?
Well, if you did than that's great. I wrote about Thanksgiving because it's the holiday that our family
always cherishes. Sometimes I would watch cooking channels to learn how to cook Thanksgiving
food for my family. It's really what we do every Thanksgiving.
The definition of Thanksgiving is the expression of gratitude, especially to God. It also means an
annual holiday marked by religious observances and a traditional meal including turkey. The holiday
commemorates a harvest festival celebrated by the Pilgrims in 1621, and is held in the U.S on the
forth Thursday in November. A similar holiday is held in Canada, usually on the second Monday in
October.

Thanksgiving is an American holiday that celebrate the Pilgrim's successful harvest. The Pilgrims
were thankful that they had survived in the New World. At the first Thanksgiving feast, people ate
lobster, seal, swan, and deer meat. In modern times, we serve turkey dinners, have family
gatherings, and watch football games. Many also donate food to neighbors who don't have enough
two eat. Thanksgiving is an American which is widely celebrated.
The holiday Thanksgiving has a long history to where it got today. The Pilgrims left England in
September 1620 on a ship called the Mayflower. They arrived on Massachusetts Bay to established
their village at Plymouth. Mayflower's passengers suffered a lot during the winter only half lived to
see America. The Pilgrims settle ashore and was greeted by the Native American in english. Several
days later, he brought Squanto who Squanto taught the Pilgrims many survival skills that help them
thrive in such a difficult area to adapt to. Squanto also help formed an alliance with the neighboring
tribe which endure 50 years of peace and harmony between the Natives and Europeans. In

Holiday Shopping Madness Christmas lights, inflatable snowmen, reindeer with red noses, fake
snowflakes, and decorated coffee cups, it must be the winter holidays and the new year! But wait,
Halloween was just days ago. How have haunted houses turned to gingerbread so fast, and what
happened to Thanksgiving? Holiday decorations, especially those pertaining to Christmas go up so
fast in stores and in neighborhoods sometimes as soon as a couple days after Halloween. This eye–
opening phenomenon shows just how much holidays in the United States are being used as times of
the year to make profits for businesses. Decorations for end of the year holidays can be seen in some
stores as early as September, starting with Halloween and gradually transitioning to Thanksgiving,
and then finally Christmas. The problem is that American businesses exploit holidays for profit at
the cost and expense of the individual and the individual's family. Fake and consumer centred
holidays have increased in present times leading to a rise in materialism. While this may be good for
businesses and shareholders it is extremely detrimental to society and the planet. If holidays are to
be sustainable and joyful in the future then people need to move away from consumerism holidays
and move towards celebrating these important dates with the important people in their lives. Overall
business, profit, consumerism, and materialism have adversely affected

Essay On Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving is a time for many things: food, family, and, with Black Friday sales starting earlier
each year, shopping. It's also a time for giving thanks, something most people forget about despite
the presence of the word "thanks" in the name of the holiday. People have a tendency to forget about
this part, though, because it's easy to take the people and animals we love for granted. Sometimes,
it's hard to appreciate them at all, especially when you have a cat whose been labeled the "bad cat"
like my family's cat, Shadow.
Shadow got his name because he follows everyone like, you guessed it, a shadow. He's the opposite
of the stereotypical, aloof cat. He doesn't like to be alone and he tends to get in trouble when he's
left to his own devices. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some of his classic antics include falling into the washing machine (luckily, it was empty), being
rushed to the kitty ER for things like eating grapes and sticking his feet into doors, and breaking
countless household knick–knacks. My family has had about dozen cats throughout our lives and
none of them have been as mischievous as Shadow. However, no one can stay mad at him when he
snuggles onto your lap and starts purring.
As a family, we've often theorized about the origins of Shadow's troublemaker behavior. While it's
possible that it's just his personality, we think it's just as likely caused by the way he came into our
lives. Shadow joined our family a little over a year ago when he was literally thrown out of a car
into our lives.
Though the little, flea–covered kitten received some cuts and bruises, mostly to his face and head,
the veterinary said that he didn't receive any serious injuries. His cuts and bruises have since healed;
however, we still wonder if he doesn't suffer any lasting effects from his head injuries. Maybe, he
does and maybe, he doesn't. Either way, that's the story I'm sticking it to explain his mischievous
and quirky behavior, behavior was on full display during his first Thanksgiving with

Speech About Thanksgiving
As an American–Muslim my family never celebrated thanksgiving but growing up in America I
have appreciated, and admired this wonderful western holiday because, it has so much more
meaning than just having great food amongst family and friends. I have learned and understood that
it's time to reflect and understand what we are thankful for, and the words "thankfulness" and giving
back are words that are very powerful in transforming, and understanding ourselves as human
beings. As a Muslim, my family always reminded us before any action we take we must be thankful,
and appreciative of what God has given us, which is very much similar in comparison to the western
holiday of thanksgiving and that is very enlightening in the sense that even though

Wine For Thanksgiving
# The Ideal Wine For Thanksgiving
Rushing to find the ideal wine for your Thanksgiving dinner? Not sure which one pairs best? Don't
hesitate. You'll have time to watch the Macy's Thanksgiving parade and enjoy dinner with your
loved ones.
What confuses most people in the selection of wines is that they don't draw a line between these two
categories:
1. Wines that pair well for cooking the turkey.
2. Wines that pair well for Thanksgiving dinner.
Still not sure what we mean? Let us simplify.
## Wines That Pair Well For Cooking The Turkey
Cooking with wine is a common choice for several meals. Turkey falls into the category of meals
that cooked with wine opens up new flavors. Still, not every wine should be used for cooking.
In this camp, red wines with high acidity and fruitful flavors work well. Zinfandel wines from Napa
Valley or Chile. Rioja wines from Spain are also a great choice. ... Show more content on

A red wine could be a logical choice if it is recommended for cooking. That's not the case. Red
wines are not as flexible in matching with the different meals a Thanksgiving dinner might have:
ham, gravy, potatoes, cornbread, pumpkin pie, cranberry, etc.
White wine wins over the red wine. As we stated before, red wine doesn't match well with the whole
Thanksgiving dinner experience. White wine allows the pallad to cleanse and taste every plate
without the interference of other flavors. The turkey cooked with the red wine also won't step in
with the white wine. The red wine loses moistens the turkey and elevates the taste. White wine like
Rieslings or Sauvignon Blanc works in these situations. When there is diversity in the meal course,
white wine is best.

The Origin Of Black Friday : The History Of Black Friday
To better understand how Thanksgiving Day as well as the entire weekend are connected with
shopping, it is necessary to define the days as well as look into the history of the days that embody
the holiday weekend. "In the United States, Thanksgiving or Thanksgiving Day is a public holiday
on the fourth Thursday in November. On this day, people remember the first American thanksgiving,
when the first European settlers had been taught how to grow food by the Native Americans, and
they celebrated the successful harvest together" (Collins Dictionary). Thanksgiving Day in the
United States is also a day for feasting, football, and spending time with family and friends.
Black Friday has several stories of the phrase's origin, only one of these origin stories is actually
true. The most common story of the phrase Black Friday's origin is that for the majority of the year,
January through November, retailers traditionally operate at a financial loss and made a majority of
their profit for the year during the holiday season, starting at the day after Thanksgiving Day. When
recorded in financial statements, accounting practices used red ink to display negative amounts and
positive amounts with black ink. Thus, Black Friday is the beginning of the period when businesses,
mostly retail, would take in profits instead of losses for the year.
The earliest report of the "black in theory" was used in the November 28, 1981 edition of
Philadelphia Inquirer (Business

Essay On Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving is a day family and friends have a traditional meal including turkey. Thanksgiving is
always held on the fourth Thursday of November every year. It's a very special holiday when
everybody comes together as a family to cook, enjoy, and bless the food, but also to enjoy each
other. In 2015, I had a special Thanksgiving Day dinner that left me full of joy.
On Thanksgiving Day every year, my family and I normally rent a building that's twenty–minutes
away from my house. The building is located in Church Point, Louisiana. It is a Community Center
at the park. The inside of the building is huge. It has a kitchen area in the back of the building.
Inside of the kitchen it has a large island and cabinets stuff full of pots, pans, and utensils. We had
two long tables in the back by the kitchen to put the food on. The deejay is placed in the front by the
entrance. Between the kitchen and the deejay were chairs and tables placed for people to eat their
food. There were placed a variety of tables that came in different shapes and colors. As I walked
around the building, I noticed yellow, brown, and orange tables. The chairs had chair covers on them
that were the same colors of yellow, brown, and orange, which are colors that you would see in
November that had different meanings. Yellow is the corn, brown is the turkey and orange is a
pumpkin.
As Thanksgiving Day approaches each year slowly, my family and friends are on their way to
Louisiana. Most of my family are from

story Hannah is not very excited to be spending thanksgiving wither dad, in the first paragraph it
says "Sounds really cool," Hannah replied politely, managing to smile at the thought of another

even though Hannah is happy she is spending time with her dad, she still is not very happy that she
is missing out on the other fun things she could if she wasn't with her dad. Also in paragraph one it
states that "What would be really cool, she thought, would

Summary OfSchool Begins And Uncle Sam's Thanksgiving Dinner?
Two political cartoons, "School Begins" and "Uncle Sam's Thanksgiving Dinner", published by
different artists, avail of distinct examples of America's attempt to civilize immigrants and non–
white groups as a means of granting them social acceptance throughout the nineteenth century.
"School Begins" exhibits Uncle Sam, a popular U.S. cartoon figure throughout history, as the
dominant white American male in the center. In the cartoon, the class is made up of well–disciplined
students studying books labeled with their state's name, juxtaposed with the disorderly class seated
in the front made up of the "Philippines, Hawaii, Porto Rico, and Cuba." The territories are depicted
as uncivilized, serving the racist and denigrating image that justified the right to govern the new
territories gained after the Spanish–American War of 1898. In the illustration titled "Uncle Sam's
Thanksgiving Dinner", immigrants and Americans of different backgrounds sit around a table,
prepared for the feast . The groups represented at the dinner reveal unruly characteristics and
stereotypical representations of each group's food to highlight their conflicting differences in
American society. By looking at how the artists utilize the exaggeration of non–white and immigrant
groups, we can see the dominant civilizing narrative the U.S. secured through imperialism and
assimilation, and this is salient because it exhibits a racist hierarchy that justified Western
civilization in the form of progress.

First Thanksgiving Essay
It is undoubted that holidays' history is the point of entry to any living cultures. In specific, the
United States' national holiday in November – Thanksgiving – reflects the country's culture of
consumerism. The first documented Thanksgiving meal in America was between the Spanish
settlers, and the Timucua tribe in La Florida in 1565 (Franklin 19). Interestingly, the main courses
were "salt pork and garbanzo beans offered by the Spanish and alligator meat offered by the Native
Americans" (Franklin 19). Nonetheless, most Americans associate the first Thanksgiving with the
moment when the Pilgrims shared a three–day feast with the Wampanoag in 1621 (McCabe 52).
Throughout the history, Americans have twisted the cornerstone of the Thanksgiving feast to create
new traditions.

Since wildfowls were "high–status foods in England", the Pilgrims unquestionably wanted them for
the feast (McCabe 52). Winslow mentioned that men were sent out to hunt wildfowls, including
goose or duck (Evans 86). Contrary to American's wide imaginations, turkeys were not "the
centerpiece of the first Thanksgiving" due to many reasons, such as they were "hard to catch, and
the meat was tough and lean" (Evans 86). There is a possibility that the Pilgrims utilized home–
grown herbs and "precious imported spices" to season their foods (P. Baker and J. Baker 56).
Nevertheless, they were more likely to boil the meats, since roasting was very laborious in the old
days (P. Baker and J. Baker 56). On the other hand, the Wampanoag killed five deer to bring to the
feast (McCabe 52). Venison is believed to be the "main dish of the traditional American

How to Prepare a Thanksgiving Dinner Essay
How to Prepare a Thanksgiving Dinner
Thanksgiving is a time to celebrate our joys with friends and family. Unfortunately, if you are the
person designated to cooking the holiday dinner, the joys can turn into complete and total fear. I'll
never forget the first time I made Thanksgiving dinner for twenty family members and friends. I
waited until the last minute to start and the dinner ended in a complete disaster. In the years
following that failure, I have learned that preparing a Thanksgiving dinner is easy...if you plan
ahead.
Eventually the day arrives when you are selected to prepare the Thanksgiving dinner. Don't panic.
With a few hours of planning, your dinner can be a complete success. The key to pulling off a

I believe that the menu is where your success will be ensured. Take your time and consider all your
guests. Be sure to be aware if someone is allergic to a specific meat or spice. Also, you probably
know what your family's traditions are, so plan accordingly. If your family's tradition includes
turkey and ham, try to keep to tradition as tradition makes everything go smoother. You can also add
side dishes to enhance the meal and try to start new traditions.
Most Thanksgiving holiday meals include the traditional turkey, ham and prime rib. If you are
having a large dinner party, I would suggest making all three. Preparing three different main dishes
can be difficult, but as I mentioned above, planning is everything. Remember, if you have a small
oven, you can always cook the ham a day in advance, roast the turkey on Thanksgiving Day and
save the prime rib for the barbeque grill while the turkey is cooking.
The next step in meal planning is planning the side dishes. Mashed Potatoes and Gravy, Stuffing,
Yams, Green Bean Casserole, Chili Casserole, Ambrosia, Dinner Rolls, Cranberry Sauce, Deviled
Eggs and an olive tray are our traditional dishes. Many of these dishes can be prepared in advance
so you have time to enjoy your guests.
The final planning stage of the dinner will be dessert. Thanksgiving Day just isn't the same without
the pies and desserts. My daughters are usually the ones in charge of dessert. Not only does relying

Eating Habits And Culinary Practices

  • 1. Eating Habits And Culinary Practices Food ways can be defined as: "the eating habits and culinary practices of a people, region, or historical period." My daily food ways consist of having three main course meals throughout the day; Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner. My current food ways are based off what is available at the Lawrence dining hall and Sykes dining hall. For breakfast I tend to always have the same foods every day, either being an omelet, cereal, yogurt with granola, and the occasional banana. Considering being a college student it's hard to come by a variety of foods you can have for breakfast especially when you're in a rush to your next class. Lunch has become quite the difficulty to keep on a regular schedule with my classes all being back–to–back during lunch time. But, on the days I do have time for lunch I always have a big bowl of salad consisting of some leafy greens, onions, celery, carrots, croutons, and all topped with my favorite dressing balsamic vinaigrette. Dinner time is my favorite time of the day to eat because it's right after practice and everyone from the team is all siting together scarfing down dishes after dishes of food to replenish our staving stomachs after a long practice. At dinner time, I always make sure to eat a protein source and heavy carbohydrate to refuel my body so depending on what is available I'll always have a wheat Italian sandwich wrap with some pasta. I also make sure to have some fruit along with a small side salad. At the end of dinner, depending on the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Thanksgiving: Race And Social Issues Thanksgiving is a the day we celebrate everything we are grateful. In which comes the controversial topic of how thanksgiving became what it is today. overall , I thinking slaughtering turkeys for a specific day is a horrific act and is considered a social justice issue. While on the contrary I do not believe it is a race and social issue mainly based off the history of thanksgiving. There is harm to the turke I think the reason it is such a controversial topic is the fact we are solely killing turkeys to interpret a dinner served back when. It is also a social issue because of the amount of turkeys being killed. As well as what thanksgiving could stand for. Snoopy and the little bird helped him out by setting up the table and by making the food. However, Peppermint Patty doesn't enjoy the food and is displeased with how the dinner is set up. Meanwhile, another one of his guests explains to Patty that she has to be grateful for what she has and shouldn't complain. Peppermint Patty soon feels bad for what she had said and has the other girl apologize for her since she can not do it herself. Nevertheless, Charlie Brown soon accepts it and is able to invite them over to his grandmother's house for an actual dinner. • 13. Uncle Sams Thanksgiving Dinner Analysis In "Uncle Sam's Thanksgiving Dinner" and "America The Land of Opportunity", both cartoons show different aspects of immigration. America was founded by immigrants. Our brave and heroic founding fathers set out to create a new nation. The founding fathers wanted to get away from the burdens in England and establish a new colony unlike any around. This nation would be free of unjust rule and any tyranny. They wanted citizens of the country to have rights that would never be taken away. We all came from Immigrants at some point in time. People left where they lived due to hardships and wanted best for their families. If Immigration didn't exist, America wouldn't exist. The first cartoon is titled, "Uncle Sam's Thanksgiving Dinner". This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This cartoon paved the way towards a greater tomorrow. In the second cartoon, it shows two immigrants paused in front of a huge wall. This cartoon is more serious. A sign above them reads "America, the land of opportunity, prosperity, freedom". The top of the wall is lined with razor– sharp barbed wire. The immigrants are immediately greeted by a voice behind a reinforced door. The guard peering through says, "Sorry...we've filled our immigrant quota. Try next year". Instead of welcoming immigrants, we're turning them away. On the other side of the wall, an American Flag can be seen. The American Flag is a symbol of peace and opportunity, yet we're not extending that to many immigrants. The United States has changed its ways drastically from when it was founded. It takes too long to become an American citizen, five years should be brought down significantly. Immigrants make up the United States, they work hard to earn a living each day. Just like the sign, America is known as the land of opportunity. The wall shown in this cartoon shows just one of the many blockades America has. The immigrant quota isn't giving immigrants many opportunities. We discriminate against those who are here for a better life. They'll do anything they can to escape the hardships of the country that they're coming from. These immigrants are forced to become "Americanized". Americans want immigrants to know English, value "American" ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Essay About Thanksgiving My first Thanksgiving Day celebration There are too many traditions in the world, and each country has specific holidays to celebrate determinate event. When I came to here in March of 2016 I didn't know about what is to celebrate Christmas, Independence Day or Thanksgiving. By beginning of November in 2015 I heard about Thanksgiving Day and what it means. As soon I knew the reason of why we celebrate Thanksgiving I started to show interest and motivation about this day. I like to be a grateful person, so I was very excited to see how the Americans celebrate this date and to be part of it. We started to do all the preparations for the dinner like 15 days before. The people who were going to that dinner were my friends, my parents, my boyfriend and me; so we made a reunion to give to each one a specific assignment. Everybody bought all the necessaries supplies like food, cover table, plates, and cups, all designed with thanksgiving pictures. As the date got closer, I was more excited. One reason for this was that I live in a place where almost everybody is American, and they have this wonderful spirit of traditions that make you part of it, even if you are not an American. Well, there were just a few days remaining for the celebration and we went to the house where the dinner was going to occur, to clean and leave everything ready for the big day. One day before Thanksgiving I went to the supermarket and I seem everyone like crazy. The people were ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. The Differences Between Ritual And Rituals There is a video with unity leaders, they were asked to define what a ritual means to them. Several of them stated that rituals are very meaningful and a way to communicate and express yourself. One of the unity leaders thinks that we have gotten away from our rituals and we need to figure out how to get them back. They also believe that a ritual can define who you are and that it can bring comfort to have a ritual. Rituals can be outward expressions and they can be anything that you bring meaning to (What is Ritual? [Video file]. (n.d.). Ritual vs Routine Rituals and routines can serve the same purpose, but they do however have different meanings. Rituals are meaningful activities that are practiced by families every day or throughout generations. Rituals should be relaxing events that bring joy to families. Routines are more like habits that form every day. For example, brushing your teeth in the morning or taking showers. There is not a meaning behind a routine, they are just actions that are performed (Difference Between Ritual and Routine | Meaning, Usage, Examples, 2017). In table1. 1, it will show the differences between rituals and routines (Schuck, 1977). Table 1.1. • 25. Informative Essay About Thanksgiving Thanksgiving is a celebrated holiday around the United States, it started many years ago, and still continues to be celebrated to this day! It's almost that time of year again and people are already starting to get ready for the holiday. Thanksgiving is an older holiday, it was first celebrated with the Pilgrims and the Indians. Back then, they didn't even eat turkey! Instead they ate seal and lobster. But to this day, we eat pumpkin pie, just as they did. We also have lots of varieties of food and used/use salt for our everyday meals. Could you imagine eating everything you ate for dinner, on Thanksgiving for breakfast? Every family has Thanksgiving traditions, but not everybody's are the same. I talk to three of my classmates and gathered information about what they do on Thanksgiving. The first person I talked to was Lilly. Her family's traditions are very similar to ours. She flies kites with her cousins, gathers in a large group, and they serve turkey! Jack says he has a large family so, they have a giant feast every single year. Which can be frustrating at times but other times is a blast! Jack's family also serves both ham and turkey, just as we do at my house! When his family lines up to be served, it must be a really long line! But for all the scrumptious food, it is worth ... • 29. Uncle Sam's Thanksgiving Dinner: Political Cartoon Analysis Two political cartoons, "School Begins" and "Uncle Sam's Thanksgiving Dinner", published by different artists, avail of distinct examples to demonstrate America's attempt to civilize ethnic and racial groups as a means of granting them social acceptance. "School Begins" exhibits Uncle Sam as the dominant white American male in the center. In the cartoon, Americans are a part of the well– disciplined class studying books labeled with their state's name and are neatly arranged, juxtaposed with the disorderly class seated in the front made up of the "Philippines, Hawaii, Porto Rico, and Cuba." The territories are depicted as dark–skinned and undomesticated, serving the racist and denigrating image that justified the right to govern the new territories ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The cartoon displays an African–American boy washing the windows behind Uncle Sam, by the door a Native American with a feather sticking out of his hair, is trying to read a book upside down, and a Chinese boy outside the doorway of the classroom is evidently excluded. Essentially, every nonwhite individual in the cartoon is rendered with exaggerated physical features that establish their racial identity. These characters are important because they show the ways the American ideal includes some while simultaneously denying others. The territories acquired from the Mexican– American War in 1848, California, Texas, Arizona and New Mexico, are represented as quiet, studious white Americans, with the exception of Alaska being the only nonwhite disciplined student. The territories Uncle Sam is trying to properly discipline, the Philippines, Hawaii, Porto Rico and Cuba, are represented with dark skin and dramatized facial expressions and features, revealing a clear racial bias. Although the cartoon is proposing that what the United States is doing with these new territories is a good thing, there is a clear bias towards white people being civilized and people with darker complexions being either ignorant or uncivilized. This racial bias depicted in the uncivilized nature of the territories represented in the cartoon is used to validate the surge of imperialism within the United ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 33. Thanksgiving Research Paper Thanksgiving Day is a national holiday for the United States. It is the day of family gathering, thankfulness, and day of feast. However, this holiday is not celebrated in any other countries. Therefore, preparing food from the turkey to side dishes would be difficult for a foreigner, but if shown how the meals are cooked makes it easier to replicate. One of my favorite parts of the meal is the gravy. Gravy makes the meal more flavorful as it can be used on the turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, dinner rolls and afterwards on turkey sandwiches. Preparing homemade gravy is a tedious process, you would have to cook down various parts of the turkey and use just enough ingredients to get a perfect consistency and taste. There are some companies ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, homemade dressing (i.e. gravy) has been difficult for me to prepare. Therefore, I wanted to take the easy way out and find that brand of dressing that has the taste of homemade. In my quest to find the perfect store bought gravy, I first started to use the packet brand of gravy by McCormick. This gravy was too thick and had a strong flour taste that did not appeal to my taste buds. After trying various ways of preparing the packet gravy, I then decided to try a different product. The next gravy I experimented with was the kind that comes in a glass container, prepared by H.J. Heinz Company. This product can be found at nearly every well–known grocery store. The gravy is readymade, it just needed to be heated and used straight out of the bottle. It is different from the packet gravy by McCormick because it does not require broth or water to turn it into gravy. H.J. Heinz gravy was ok out of the bottle, but it was a watered down and needed additional flavorings to get that homemade taste. Therefore, I began to search cooking websites and food forums to find advice and comments posted by the internet community. This process took a while. In the meantime, I would try to make gravy whenever it is possible in order to differentiate what tasted the best or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 37. Analyzing James Miller's 'Acting Our Culture' A picture says a thousand words. In "Acting Our Culture", a book edited by James miller, we get this representation clearly from Norman Rockwell and John Holyfield in their Thanksgiving visual representation paintings. Both artist provide us with their own interpretation and view of the thanksgiving holiday depicting in both what they believe the holiday season is about. 3 main themes in these pieces are family, color, and culture the root of both paintings, this being what ties as well as separates them as works of art. The first thing you will notice between the paintings are the family's presented. The presence of their relation is evident due to a few factors. In Rockwell we get the differences in age from the little kids present at the table to the middle aged couple on the left side of the photo (Rockwell), then in Holyfield's we get the same view of age difference across the table representing the occasion to be a gathering of family. They also share the same main meal that being the turkey also with vegetables and other side plates. But once we look closer at the family a deeper level of contrast is revealed. • 41. Thanksgiving Reflection Paper In order to understand tradition one has to fully immerse themselves into a situation where tradition is taking place. Thanksgiving is the perfect opportunity to explore what it means to celebrate, the holiday is an American holiday only and is celebrated in a multitude of different ways with an endless amount of traditional flare that changes from family to family. I have many biases as to what the Thanksgiving holiday looks like. Political rants, family members fighting over things from the past, children running around creating chaos. I chose my family to observe because I wanted to gain somewhat of an outsider perspective on what it was like to be around my family at the holidays. Obviously I have been going to Thanksgiving with these same people my whole life but I wanted to be able to look at the gathering in a different way and understand in a more significant way why the way my family celebrates may be different from how I've seen other people's families celebrate. As I step toward the house that I have known my entire life I find myself inspecting every inch of the outer areas. The pile of crunchy, dull colored leaves that had been pushed to a corner as if not to interfere with the delicately arranged garden that surrounded the lands perimeter just along the sidewalk. The flowers in the surrounding garden have all died and are merely brown branches standing tall and spiked awaiting the spring season. Thanksgiving Dinner Disadvantages As Thanksgiving approaches, nearly every person can recall a time when he witnessed a stressed out family member panic to prepare the best possible Thanksgiving dinner. The stresses of cooking Thanksgiving dinner usually begin during the planning and shopping phase. • 49. The Black Friday Takeover Essay "Mommy, why didn't I get what I wanted for Thanksgiving this year?" This question seems absurd in a modern–day context, but in the future, it could be a question that is asked much too often. With holiday–themed advertisements in the media and holiday discount deals already visible on the shelves, it is no wonder that Black Friday and the holiday shopping season are creeping up closer and closer to Thanksgiving. Black Friday is a popular phrase used to describe the chaotic shopping frenzy that takes place every year on the Friday after Thanksgiving. In recent years, the chaos of this so–called "holiday" has only escalated; consumers are trampling one another to get the best deals, and retailers are scrambling to keep up with their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many Thanksgiving celebrations today are still centered around getting together with family and friends and giving thanks. The term Black Friday was first used, according to US News Digital Weekly, in 1869 in reference to a stock market crash on the day after Thanksgiving that year. US News Digital Weekly says that it was again used in 1951 to describe the high number of workers that skipped work that day. Eventually, employers started giving workers the day after Thanksgiving as a vacation day. In turn, many of the workers used this day to start their shopping for the holiday season, making the day after the Thanksgiving a day that many stores started making huge profits. If a business has a profitable market, they are considered "in the black". This is likely what brought about the modern meaning of the phrase Black Friday. However, it wasn't until 2004 that Black Friday was officially considered the "biggest shopping day of the year...according to data from retail analyst ShopperTrak," (Tozzi). Today, stores everywhere have Black Friday sales with almost comically low prices on merchandise to entice potential customers and drive them away from competing stores. Recently, America's obsession with Black Friday has generated various opinions on the day itself, its proximity to Thanksgiving, and the morality of the holiday shopping season. Although we enjoy thanksgiving, many people do not know the background of Thanksgiving or the true story of Thanksgiving. The first Thanksgiving was in November 1621, when the pilgrim's first corn harvest was successful, with the help of the Indians. The feast was organized by governor William Bradford and he too invited native American allies, one being Wampanoag Chief Massasoit. The pilgrims didn't use "Thanksgiving" to describe this three–day feast. No record exists of what was on the banquet's menu. Governor Bradford wrote in one of his journal that he had sent four men to prepare this feast and Wampanoag had brought five deer. Pilgrims did not have an oven and little food ... This is the truest for restaurants and hotels, as many people gather around with family and go out to dinner more often, or when family flies into town and stays in a hotel. This busy time of year shows many of the same patterns annually, as well as cause some problems along the way. Every year the restaurant industry experiences many more and larger groups of people around the Thanksgiving holiday. These larger groups make management a little more difficult as traditionally, food takes a little longer, service is more rushed, and everyone including employees and customers are a little on edge. However, people are escaping the stress of Thanksgiving dinner by letting the restaurants do all the work. A study showed that in 2011 six percent of those surveyed said they planned to eat out for Thanksgiving. Of the people who eat Thanksgiving at home in 2017, 9 percent said they would pick up parts of their meals, and four percent said they'd buy a complete meal. That means nearly one in four diners are not going to do all the work of fixing Thanksgiving dinner. In another survey thirty–one percent said they'd eat in a restaurant where they traditionally go on Thanksgiving Day. Thirty percent said they'd go to a restaurant that they use for special occasions. Lastly, twenty–one percent are going to a restaurant where they are regulars. The last reason for so many ... • 81. Thanksgiving Tradition Analysis For families across the United States, Thanksgiving is a holiday to come together with family and loved ones to celebrate the good things life has to offer. Before analyzing my own family's Thanksgiving celebration, I thought that our type of festivities were normal to most families. While some of the traditions of the holiday say something about our society as a whole, I was also able to view the implicit meanings of my family's specific actions. This analysis made me realize that while our society is attempting to move forward and break norms, they are still heavily present within our everyday subconscious actions. Although I am grateful I was able to come to this realization, it saddened me to see that way my family celebrated the holiday ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although I was well versed and knowledgeable on the topic due to my studies in Design this quarter, I chose to not speak up and join the debate because I did not view myself on the same level as both my brother and my cousin. Due to me being the youngest, I felt as though I was less intellectual and powerful than them. This depicts how power and dominance allows for hierarchy, even within families. The conversations that I engaged in were also less intellectually stimulating, with my family mostly asking about how college was, rather than my opinions on deeper matters. This shows that even their treatment of me as the youngest reiterates the implicit hierarchical structure. The different treatment between older members of my family and me is similar to George Gmelch's piece, Birthdays, Basketball, and Breaking Bread: Negotiating with Class in Contemporary Black America. The people of higher economic and social status in this piece treat their friends of lower status and higher status differently, similar to how my family treats members of different ages. But wait, Halloween was just days ago. How have haunted houses turned to gingerbread so fast, and what happened to Thanksgiving? Holiday decorations, especially those pertaining to Christmas go up so fast in stores and in neighborhoods sometimes as soon as a couple days after Halloween. Decorations for end of the year holidays can be seen in some stores as early as September, starting with Halloween and gradually transitioning to Thanksgiving, and then finally Christmas. The problem is that American businesses exploit holidays for profit at the cost and expense of the individual and the individual's family. Fake and consumer centred holidays have increased in present times leading to a rise in materialism. While this may be good for businesses and shareholders it is extremely detrimental to society and the planet. Turkey falls into the category of meals that cooked with wine opens up new flavors. Still, not every wine should be used for cooking. As we stated before, red wine doesn't match well with the whole Thanksgiving dinner experience. White wine allows the pallad to cleanse and taste every plate without the interference of other flavors. The turkey cooked with the red wine also won't step in with the white wine. The Origin Of Black Friday : The History Of Black Friday To better understand how Thanksgiving Day as well as the entire weekend are connected with shopping, it is necessary to define the days as well as look into the history of the days that embody the holiday weekend. "In the United States, Thanksgiving or Thanksgiving Day is a public holiday on the fourth Thursday in November. On this day, people remember the first American thanksgiving, when the first European settlers had been taught how to grow food by the Native Americans, and they celebrated the successful harvest together" (Collins Dictionary). Thanksgiving Day in the United States is also a day for feasting, football, and spending time with family and friends. Black Friday has several stories of the phrase's origin, only one of these origin stories is actually true. The most common story of the phrase Black Friday's origin is that for the majority of the year, January through November, retailers traditionally operate at a financial loss and made a majority of their profit for the year during the holiday season, starting at the day after Thanksgiving Day. When recorded in financial statements, accounting practices used red ink to display negative amounts and positive amounts with black ink. Thus, Black Friday is the beginning of the period when businesses, mostly retail, would take in profits instead of losses for the year. It's a very special holiday when everybody comes together as a family to cook, enjoy, and bless the food, but also to enjoy each other. Two political cartoons, "School Begins" and "Uncle Sam's Thanksgiving Dinner", published by different artists, avail of distinct examples of America's attempt to civilize immigrants and non– white groups as a means of granting them social acceptance throughout the nineteenth century. "School Begins" exhibits Uncle Sam, a popular U.S. cartoon figure throughout history, as the dominant white American male in the center. In the cartoon, the class is made up of well–disciplined students studying books labeled with their state's name, juxtaposed with the disorderly class seated in the front made up of the "Philippines, Hawaii, Porto Rico, and Cuba." The territories are depicted as uncivilized, serving the racist and denigrating image that justified the right to govern the new territories gained after the Spanish–American War of 1898. In the illustration titled "Uncle Sam's Thanksgiving Dinner", immigrants and Americans of different backgrounds sit around a table, prepared for the feast . The groups represented at the dinner reveal unruly characteristics and stereotypical representations of each group's food to highlight their conflicting differences in American society. By looking at how the artists utilize the exaggeration of non–white and immigrant groups, we can see the dominant civilizing narrative the U.S. secured through imperialism and assimilation, and this is salient because it exhibits a racist hierarchy that justified Western civilization in the form of progress. ... • 145. First Thanksgiving Essay It is undoubted that holidays' history is the point of entry to any living cultures. In specific, the United States' national holiday in November – Thanksgiving – reflects the country's culture of consumerism. The first documented Thanksgiving meal in America was between the Spanish settlers, and the Timucua tribe in La Florida in 1565 (Franklin 19). Interestingly, the main courses were "salt pork and garbanzo beans offered by the Spanish and alligator meat offered by the Native Americans" (Franklin 19). Nonetheless, most Americans associate the first Thanksgiving with the moment when the Pilgrims shared a three–day feast with the Wampanoag in 1621 (McCabe 52). Throughout the history, Americans have twisted the cornerstone of the Thanksgiving feast to create new traditions. There was minimal information of the actual "first Thanksgiving" in 1621. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Since wildfowls were "high–status foods in England", the Pilgrims unquestionably wanted them for the feast (McCabe 52). Winslow mentioned that men were sent out to hunt wildfowls, including goose or duck (Evans 86). Contrary to American's wide imaginations, turkeys were not "the centerpiece of the first Thanksgiving" due to many reasons, such as they were "hard to catch, and the meat was tough and lean" (Evans 86). There is a possibility that the Pilgrims utilized home– grown herbs and "precious imported spices" to season their foods (P. Baker and J. Baker 56). Nevertheless, they were more likely to boil the meats, since roasting was very laborious in the old days (P. Baker and J. Baker 56).
