Ban On Weapons And War Machinery That Were Controlled By...
In July 28, 2015, a letter was addressed at the International Joint Conference on Artificial
Intelligence at Argentina that petitioned for a ban on weapons and war machinery that were
controlled by artificial intelligence. Its rapidly increasing research and growth posed a threat to the
safety of humanity and its beneficial value. The letter openly stated that technology had reached a
point where the creation of autonomous machines would be reachable in a matter of years. Letting
the development continue could possibly result in the mass production of these weapons and
accessible to all kinds of civilians and malicious forces such as terrorists and dictators. Thus, the
2500+ researchers who agreed with the letter said that they find "no ... Show more content on

However, these machines have been given an increasing amount of freedom such as a 24/7 watch
for intruders, unlike humans, and the ability to shoot at their own will. The topic of giving these
machines a certain degree of freedom and moral value has been a subject of controversy. Should
machines be given free will beyond human control? Many researches and philosophers like Patrick
Lin spoke against the issue of the letter, saying that it is "a useful letter of awareness, but nobody
can predict whether robots will gain full autonomy in the future." (Lin qtd. in Knight Par.8) While
the idea of preserving human lives, the danger of robots given their free will could result in more
than the deaths of the adversary, but also innocent civilians. The liberty of the robots will make them
persons and not necessarily comply with our demands, since their freedom is superior to our control.
In what follows, I will argue that war robots are not persons and should not be given a higher level
of autonomy and moral value and that humans should keep them under control. "Robots reduce the
need for humans in combat and therefore save the lives of soldiers, sailors and pilots. What parent
would send their child into a war zone if a robot could do the job instead?" (Parkin Par. 8) Certainly,
human lives are fragile and are not finite, but one must not forget to consider

Will Robots Render Humans Jobless?
A man walks into his office. He is greeted by a robot who brings him his coffee: a Pumpkin Spice
Latte with exactly a tablespoon of pumpkin pie spice, a quarter cup of brewed espresso, and perfect
amounts of cream and sugar. The man walks to his office area and sits down in front of his
computer, in which he opens up an analytics software that gives him information regarding the
amount of work achieved by each of his robots. A group of supervisors and managers monitor the
robots, ensuring that each task is completed. This is the work environment of the future, a work
environment in which humans are no longer the workers and, instead, are the managers and
administrators: A work environment in which humans are the bosses. While machines are
increasingly replacing humans in the workforce, robots and machines will not render humans jobless
and will, instead, provide more employment opportunities for people in the future since qualities
such as human–to–human interaction, creativity, and human intelligence will always be in demand
and can never be replaced by a machine of any sort.
In order to deeply investigate the issue of future jobs for humans, it is vital for one to know the
basics of the job market. The job market, as with any other market, runs on supply and demand. This
means that when there is a low supply of a job and a high demand for it, the salaries for that job
skyrocket.

Case 8–22: Evaluating a company's budget procedures
1. Identify the problems that appear to exist in Ferguson & Son Manufacturing Company's
budgetary control system and explain how the problems are likely to reduce the effectiveness of the
system.
Ferguson & Son Manufacturing Company has appointed Robert Ferguson, Jr., the son of the
president as the plant manager. He directed the company's focus on budgetary control system. The
prime aims of the system were reducing inefficiencies and seeking cost reductions. However, the
results extracted from the conversation of Tom Emory – manager of the machine shop in the
company's factory and Jim Morris – manager of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This could significantly damage the reputation of the company as well as make it lose trust from
loyal customers.
To sum up, the budgetary control system had its advantage of knowing in advance what was
happening in each department. While instead of improvement, budgetary control system adopted in
Ferguson & Son Manufacturing Company had made the whole working process more worsened.
2. Explain how Ferguson & Son Manufacturing Company's budgetary control system could be
revised to improve its effectiveness.
Budgetary control system is an essential management tool that communicates management's plans
throughout the organization, allocates resources, and coordinates activities. Besides, unwise system
can have the negative effects on the performance of the company. Thus, it is vital to develop a
compatible budgeting system which can assist managers in fulfilling long–term goals and strategic
plans.
First, drawn from the situation of Ferguson & Son Manufacturing Company, it is pointed out that
feasible targets play the first priority in designing the budgeting system. If the goal is too high as in
the case of Ferguson & Son Manufacturing Company, then, in the following steps, the whole
process automatically gets into trouble. The company should be realistic when setting any
benchmark among the periods of manufacturing. The conditions of equipment, employees, orders,
sales, and the coordination among other departments should be taken into account to jump to the
most suitable

Man-vs-Machine: Who Wll Win the War? Essay
Man–vs–machine: who will win the war?
Man vs Machine has been a debatable topic for centuries. So, when did it all start? One started to
question the expansion of technological development after the Industrial Revolution in England. The
great revolution of machines started with the "Watt Steam Engine" which clearly revolutionized
transportation and factory production. Machines continue to experience development and media
appraise till our current day. Where does the Man fit in? The inventor of those machines and the one
responsible for the machines' development is currently living an inevitable fear of "artificial
intelligence." Many influential people such as the futurist "Ray Kurzweil" argue that machines may
be more productive and more ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The supporters believe that the benefits and the positive impact of machines outweigh the negative
impact on mankind. Machine supporters believe that if singularity, the "hypothetical moment in time
when artificial intelligence will have progressed to the point of a greater–than–human intelligence"
occurs, humans will not be obligated to comply with machines and accept to be overpowered.
Instead, supporters believe that by that time, mankind would have evolved in ways to insure
human's survival in a world with highly intelligent machines.
Many supporters believe that humans could merge themselves with machines. That is, get a
cybernetic, robotic part implanted within their bodies to enhance their powers. Therefore, allowing
them to keep up with powerful machinery. The idea of merging with machines might seem insane;
however, it has been done already. The first cyborg was invented around a hundred years ago. For
instance, in 1958, Arne Larsson, was the first person to receive a cybernetic implant. Arne was given
an implanted pacemaker, which kept him alive and mobile until he died in his 80s. This was
achieved with the primitive knowledge mankind had back in 1958. Therefore, if humans continue to
enhance and develop technologies, the next decade would surely witness even more magnificent
implant inventions.
A debatable topic always has its supporters and its sceptics. Just as much as there are supporters of
machines there are humans who oppose and even

Factory Workers: Changing America's Economy
Factory workers have always been seen as the backbone of America's economy. The gritty
employees would work day in and day out, callusing their hands and providing for their families. A
once lively and busy factory is now a quiet and calm . Now, a cold steel machine routinely does the
same work, replacing the live worker. It was to further the industry that this transition was made.
While they were introduced to help their human co–workers, in some aspects it also set them back.
After the introduction of robots in factory settings some workers were cut because their position was
obsolete. It was because of this, and many other factors, that there is much to compare and contrast
when speaking of technology in the factory industry. Although this integration strengthened this
field, it is because of this change that the business shifted, and the economy began to fall. ... Show

During this time great changes were taking place in order to encourage growth of the factory
industry, and a flourishing middle class. Machinery was intended to have the same effect it does
today; they are used to aid workers and lessen the strain put on employees. In this aspect their
introduction has been greatly beneficial. The aid that machines have given to workers come in many
different forms. In many cases, repetitious acts are taken out the picture. Tedious work that once
needed to be done by human employees is now a worry of the past. Actually, Blue from Vista
Industrial Products Inc. (2016) claims that "when an automated machine is programmed to perform
a task over and over again, the accuracy and repeatability compared to an employee is far greater"
(p. 1).

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Treadmills
People around the world are looking for the best treadmill brands that can be used for home.
Treadmills are devices or work–out machines that make the user walk while staying at the same
place. Users can also run on these machines as fast as they want to. Treadmills are great machines
that can improve one's stamina and speed. Some people also use these machines to train animals
such as dogs and horses. The treadmill was introduced even before the experts developed the power
machine. The idea of the power machine came from manpower–operated mills that used people and
animals to make it run. These mills were operated by animals such as horse, donkeys, and cow that
grinded the grain to make flour out of it.
Now, people are using treadmills as workout machines or exercise machines that would keep them
in shape or increase their power. A treadmill has a platform that is covered with belt that spins
around when the user runs or walks on top of the machine. There are also treadmills ... Show more

American Workers Are More Beneficial And Cost Efficient...
Many American workers are at risk of losing their jobs to man–made machinery. One author, Adam
Davidson, wrote "Making It in America," and he argues that American workers are more beneficial
and cost efficient than machinery. He uses his interview with Standard Motor Products employee,
Maddie Parlier, to build his argument. Maddie is a low educated worker who was forced to take the
job at SMP when she became pregnant her senior year of high school. Though she was quick and
effective working the laser–welding machine, the unskilled job increased her chance of being
replaced by a machine. Many manufacturing companies have found machines more efficient, but
don't realize the effect on American workers. Davidson builds his credibility with logical facts and
statistics, and displaying emotional appeals to influence the audience; however, by the end of his
article, his ability to influence his readers with his supporting facts strengthens his argument.
Throughout "Making It in America," Davidson uses his personal experiences to strengthen his
credibility and support his argument. The author's sources come from personal interactions with the
Standard Motor Products Company, including interviews with Maddie Parlier, Luke Hutchins
(skilled machinists at SMP), and manager Tony Scalzitti. Tony comes to explain that, "Maddie is
cheaper than a machine," (Davidson 338). The manager tells us that low–skilled workers are capable

Smart Machines: Trending Technology
Smart Machines: Trending Technology If the name Watson was mentioned in the IT world, more
than likely everyone would know what the name was associated with. Watson, a computer that can
interact with humans, sense, decipher and recognize questions and answer them with unbelievable
accuracy. Watson's introduction to the 21st century was aired on the popular TV show "Jeopardy."
The competition Watson faced while playing on the game show were some of the best players to
ever play the game. A one–word summary of how the human mind compared to the smart machine
over the course of three episodes was undesirable. Watson embarrassed two of the best players to
ever participate in the show. The speed at which Watson processed verbal questions and answered
them was nothing short of amazing. It was evident that each member of the team that created
Watson had a strong sense of accomplishment for how his or her machine preformed. So now there
is a really smart machine that can win on a game show, big deal. What does this really mean?
Although Watson is an exception to the current list of smart machines, there are still many of them,
and as evident with Watson, the IT world is continuing to press forward and enhance the smartness
of each machine. What can we expect for the 2020? What are potential positive and negative effects
of smart machine for each American? What consideration should be made globally before
implementing this type of operating system? These are all

Stubbs And Tom's Case: The Labor Relations Case
If something is legal, is it also morally correct? Is it morally correct going against the company one
works for so a former employee may win a case? Or looking from the flip side: is it morally correct
to deprive someone from a fair trial so one's company could keep good face? The Labor Relations
case puts into doubt whatever standing one has about this issue. In this case, Tom the company's
new Loss Control Specialist, is the one deciding if he should throw away all evidence older than five
years incriminating the company of unsafe practices or reveal to Stubbs that there are documents
older than five year. If Tom throws away the documents, he may not suffer any physical

Essay On Machine Scheduling
Description Of Machine Scheduling
1–1 Definition Of The Scheduling Problem Scheduling is the process of assigning limited resources
to a set of jobs over a period of time. The resources may be machine in a workshop, runways at an
airport and crews at a construction site, as well as processing units in a computing environment. The
jobs may be operation in the production process, take–offs and landing at an airport, stages in a
construction project, executions of computer programs[30]. The goal of scheduling is to assign
resources to the jobs such that one or more objective are optimized. Scheduling becomes an
important concern when resources are limited and need to be utilized to complete many competing
jobs efficiently. Many real world scheduling problem are multi–objective by nature. Traditionally,
the most common approach has been to combine the multiple objective into a single scalar value by
using weighted aggregating ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An example of such a dimension is the number of the available machine and the way how these
machines are organized. Then one machine sequencing problem is the simplest one: all jobs have to
be processed on single machine and no two jobs can be processed simultaneously. There are four
classes of job shop scheduling problems [30]
1.2.1 Single Machine Scheduling
The single machine scheduling problem involves scheduling a set of jobs to a single resource. This
is accomplished by determining a sequence that includes each job, and it assigns the jobs to its
source. Each job can give a priority, ready time, processing time, and due date. The value of the
performance measure can be computed on the base of this information and the sequence of jobs.
This problem grows in complicity at an exponential rate as the number of jobs to be scheduling

On the other hand, the need for higher capacity may in fact be needed if the effects of an improved
product contribute to more market share.
There is a projected inflation rate of 3%. Applying this rate to all costs, minus depreciation, we find
that the effect is a lower NPV and raise the EAC for both decisions. However, purchasing the
Vulcan machine still remains to have the lower EAC. Thus, all other things equal, the purchasing the
Vulcan seems to quantitatively be the better decision. There are also a few other small impacts
which are not factored into the EAC. The Vulcan frees up 15% of floor space and also has a
maximum capacity that is 30% higher than the current machines. In the near future this may be
irrelevant because there is no need for more floor space and the current machines are only operating
at 90% capacity as it is, but these should still be considered added benefits as unforeseeable market
conditions over the next eight years may warrant the need for added capacity.
After considering both qualitative and quantitative impacts of the decision, it would be my
recommendation to purchase the Vulcan machine. All of the data shows that the Vulcan machine
will be less costly and more efficient. What the data does not show however is the critical
assumption that the laborers will be able to be laid off without dispute. If there is conflict from the
labor

The screwdriver was firstly seen in the 19th century, which came from the flat bladed bit used in a

P1
The materials mostly used to make the parts is plastic for the handle, steel bar and chromium (or
nickel) for the steel tip of the screwdriver.
For the steel bar, large amounts of green wire is sent to a factory. The wire is drawn to the correct
size diameter by a machine and after the wire is made into a rod. Then the rod is made to its correct
size by being put inside a die. To produce the correct strength for the wire goes through heating
treating. It is heated for around 12 hours for the best strength. Once this is done, by using a string
forge the wire is straightened and is put in a cold forming press. This makes the wire have its correct
length by cutting it, it also forms the screwdriver tip and the wings for the handle for it to correctly
fit. After this, by the heated wire. Blades are formed for the tip from the dies. This is done when the
screwdriver goes in the press. After all this the tool has formed wings and it is worn down.
Then the automatic tipping machine makes the point on the bar. After one more

Analysis Of Better Than Hum Why Robots Will-And Must-Take...
Claude Elwood Shannon once said: "I visualize a time when we will be to robots what dogs are to
humans. And I am rooting for the machines". A lot has changed in our world since Shannon passed
away in 2001, and the world of robotics has become more important than ever. In His article "Better
than Human: Why Robots Will–and Must–Take Our Jobs", Kevin Kelly discusses how robots and
machines have been taking over our jobs and how this will only become more common in our
everyday lives. He believes it is a good and necessary thing that AI take over our jobs, because it
will improve our society and increase productivity. Kelly's essay is an accurate depiction of the
future of technology and how it will impact our lives.
Kelly introduces his essay with a some statistics. Two hundred years ago, 70 percent of American
workers lived and worked on a farm. Today, however, machines and robots have taken over all but 1
percent of those jobs. He speaks about the fact those jobs have been replaced by newer jobs, such as
the actual making of robots and AI machines. Other jobs have surfaced as well: photographer,
graphic designer, appliance repairman, food chemist, and more. These jobs have been able to ...

example, humans can weave cotton cloth with great effort, but technology can do it with virtually no
error. Another example are the recently introduced self driving cars. Of course, there have been
recent fatalities on the news, but they make far less mistakes than a human does. Plus, in one of the
accidents, the woman ran right in front of the car on a pitch black highway. It was an accident that
absolutely no human could have avoided, and if somehow they could have, they would have gone

The, The Infernal Machine, And Ubu Roi By Alfred Jarry
In the three plays that we have discussed in class, Antigone by Jean Anouilh, The Infernal Machine
by Jean Cocteau, and Ubu Roi by Alfred Jarry, there is a prodigious depiction of female characters
and power that come in numerous ways. In The Infernal Machine there are female characters, such
as Jocasta and the Sphinx, who show power and authority. Likewise, in "Antigone," characters, such
as Antigone and her sister, Ismene, also show power and supremacy. In Ubu Roi, the main character
that showed power through rule was Mere Ubu. From being a woman of authority, to rebelling
against men with a greater authority than them, to doing what you want no matter if it was right or
wrong for the people, these characters truly show what it is to be a woman of power in one way or
another. Characters in both plays display power in innumerable means, and it shows the leadership
of women. John C. Maxwell once said, "A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and
shows the way." Women in these plays do what they can to show power, in their each individual
ways. In Cocteau's The Infernal Machine, Oedipus is the main character of the play showing power,
but the women in the play also depict power in additional ways. One example is Jocasta, the mother
of Oedipus, with her title being the first symbol of power since she is known as the queen of Thebes.

The Departed And Infernal Affairs
After watching both films, it is safe to say that Infernal Affairs out–ranks the Departed by a
substantial amount. The Departed is an American remake of the Chinese film Infernal Affairs. Both
movies reveal the secret life of moles for a gang and the police force. Even though the Departed
stays pretty close to the original screenplay, there are some differences that both add to each film
and takes away from the plot. In all, besides their differences, the Departed and Infernal Affairs both
create a thrilling story of the mafia. The first major difference that caught my eye is the similar love
interest in the Departed. In this rendition, Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Colin Sullivan
(Matt Damon) both share an interest with the police psychiatrist. This adds a unique way to connect
the characters. Throughout the film, Billy and Colin never met or interacted with each other.
However, with both of them visiting the psychiatrist, it provides them with a connection. This
creates a sense of knowledge to the audience. It gives a sense of a what–if scenario. When I learned

what would happen". This gave me a suspense not like other murder thrillers, but more of a what if

Another difference that is noteworthy is when the police chief is thrown off the building by the gang

The Character of Oedipus in Oedipus and The Infernal Machine
The Character of Oedipus in Oedipus and The Infernal Machine
The stories of Oedipus, as told through Seneca's Oedipus and Cocteau's The Infernal Machine,
contain both similarites and differences. Both authors portray the character of Oedipus as being
obstinate, ignorant, and inquisitive. Yet Seneca and Cocteau differ on their interpretation of the
motives that propelled these characteristics of Oedipus. Seneca portrays Oedipus as a mature man
who, in seeing the troubles of the plague that has descended upon Thebes, feels true sorrow for his
dying people and wishes to cure his moribund city. On the other hand, Cocteau's Oedipus is a
pretentious, immature, and overweening young adult who seeks to indulge himself in the fast and ...

that I killed the King so that I could marry her. Cocteau, Infernal Machine, p.90
In this quote, so too is Cocteau's Oedipus seemingly blind to the virtually obvious, choosing instead
to believe Tiresias's wishes in admitting Oedipus's horrible deeds, were only to seize control of the
throne. Jocasta and Creon also try to warn Oedipus of the impending truth, but it is to no avail, as
Oedipus will not heed their pleas.
Contrary to one another, are Seneca and Cocteau's views on Oedipus's reasons for being so
pertinacious in his search for the killer of Laius. Seneca's Oedipus, a stately, old, and sage man, is
committed to his role as king. But under the present circumstances, in which a horrible plague
ravages Thebes, Oedipus with all his human powers a nd abilities, is not able to provide assistance.
Only can he pray that somehow it might all go away.
And yet I posed my riddle. Next, a shriek– and her impatient claws ripped at the rock and not my
entrails. But that tangled mess, her dark enigma, I solved nonetheless. Sen. Oed. 10
In his encounter with the Sphinx, Oedipus bravely faces the beast and answers the riddle that had
been indecipherable for so many other men. He arrived in Thebes a true hero, was welcome as their
king, and subsequently commenced his benevolent rule.
Cocteau's Oedipus, on the other hand, is a much more immature and haughty character. And while
Seneca's Oedipus's persistence stemmed from his wish to save the citizens of his

Radiology Department Case Study
As the administrator of the Radiology Department, I am not only in charge of managing day–to–day
operations, but also have to develop the capital budget. Upon developing the capital budget, it was
decided that the budget for the fiscal year would be one million dollars. As well as developing the
budget, the task falls upon me to decide where the money will be allocated. Within an organization
there are several budgets that arise such as, an expense budget, a revenue budget, and the one at
hand, the capital budget. Unlike other budgets, the capital budget is one where one has to "select
long–term assets, whose useful life is greater than one year... items typically include...routine capital
equipment." (Pg205). Two requests were submitted from the Mammography department, as well as
the MRI department. Being placed in charge of making this decision, I now face the challenge of
having to decide which departments request will be approved. Approving both requests would
exceed the capital budget, due to the fact that both requests individually cost eight hundred thousand

Technology And Its Impact On Technology Essay
In today's society, there have been many speculations on the impact of technology. The rise of
technology has unfolded into the betterment of many advances in the industry. However, it is no
surprise that these advances have also caused society into depending so much on technology. Author
Sherry Turkle, argued that we as a society have distanced ourselves from one another; she discusses
her observations drawn from human beings and their interaction with social machines. She indicated
that humans rely much more on technology which has negatively impacted the way we
communicate with one another. Every individual has their own flaws. In our imperfections, we tend
to discriminate among one another, we have preconceived notion based on what we have seen or
experienced. Perhaps, there is a say that goes 'a book should never be judged by its cover '. In
addition to, various studies observed by between robots and children, Turkle implies that robots are
slowing replacing humans. As a result of our dependency on technology, humans are failing each
other and the constant rise of technology should not be blame for it, as we do have control over
some of these issues.
In the 1760–1800's, the first machine age occurred during the industrial revolution. The industrial
revolution was transition from a hand labor to a machine labor. The new machines were powered by
water, steam and coal. The Industrial revolution marked a very profitable time for many factory
owners because, unlike humans

How Technology Enters The Picture
A considerable portion of the defense budget is spent on training personnel to operate and maintain
highly complex equipment. In the austere environment that the military operates in, this presents
shortfalls in maintenance. In order to combat this and in an attempt to maintain and adapt DoD
equipment in the face of long logistical supply chains, the DoD deploys machine shops, weld shops
and other fabrication capabilities in–theater. However, due to lack of design information,
manufacturing technology and limited engineering design expertise these capabilities are limited
and only provide a small percentage of repair parts that are needed to maintain these complex
systems (DARPA 2013). This is where technology enters the picture. ... Show more content on

And why not, innovation has always been a key component of Marine Corps tradition and our
leadership style. The Marine Corps' continuous improvement process tell us that it is both an
opportunity and an obligation and it is the responsibility of Marine leaders and supervisors at all
levels to bring good ideas to the surface and support their implementation (MCO 5220.12, para 1.2).
As we look for technology and tools to innovate, one untapped resource that the Marine Corps has
yet to maximize is the machining and welding capabilities, which reside mostly in our Ground
Ordnance Vehicle battalions, MWSS and Marine Aviation Logistics units.
The Machinist MOS (2161) has shorten the gap in terms of technology between the manufacturing
sector and the Corps' machining capabilities with the procurement of Computer Numerical Control

the capability to produce intricate and complex parts in an expeditious manner and sometimes in
minutes, as opposed to days with manual machines. However, this technology has not been
exploited in the Marine Corps and has yet to be maximized. This is primarily due to the Corps
commitments to OEF and OIF, thus the proficiency and lack of knowledge from leaders of its

How to Save Energy in an Office Building
Modern offices are a cluster of technology and coffee. The constantly evolving world in which all
businesses must operate necessitate a commitment to being energy efficient. Initially, it is possible to
reduce the energy consumption for a business, with some relatively small steps.
Collecting all the waste paper from the office bins, to be mulched and compressed into fuel bricks,
which are then burned to produce the heat for the office, is one step too far for most businesses.
However, these small steps take just a few minutes to carry out and will reap large reductions in
energy usage.
Turn off unused desktop computers and screens.
Desktop computers and their screens are huge energy sapping devices, which just happen to be sat
on every desk in the office. When a screen or a computer is not being used, they should be put into
sleep mode to reduce the amount of electricity they are using. Leaving computers and screens turned
on whilst someone has their lunch break will cost the company hundreds over the course of a year,
yet it will take a few clicks to tun everything off for the hour.
Indeed, it has become pretty common practice to leave a computer on in hibernation mode over
night to save the employee a few minutes in the morning. This means that the computer has been
drawing electricity all night long for no really productive value.
Turning off computers and screens is a really small step to start making huge reductions in energy
consumption.

In the book "Hong Kong Cinema: Coloniser, motherland and self", the author Yingchi Chu describes

From the early time until before 1842, Hong Kong was considered to be a territory of China. In
1842, China officially ceded Hong Kong to the British after the First Opium War due to the rise of

In addition, the sense of disorientation is also displayed through the way the past story and present

time from past to present but in the way that the past and the present are intermingled and its
boundary is blurred. Also, the story of Fleur is in the past tense but it is an unfinished story which
keeps presenting and haunting the present. The confusion projected by the merger of past and

dramatic future changes. Experiencing that undesirable feelings, Hong Kong people yearn for their
past as a mean of escaping from the awful reality. Their longing to the past is expressed in the
juxtaposition of 1930s–Hong Kong and 1980s–Hong Kong. As mention above, the past story of

Ignoble Downfall : Oedipus Rex And The Infernal Machine

A Noble vs. Ignoble Downfall: Oedipus Rex and The Infernal Machine
Originating from the philosopher, Aristotle, the characterization of "pity and fear" developed into an
idea present in classic Greek tragedies (Oedipus Packet). As the outcome of these emotions, the
audience experiences catharsis in response to the inevitable downfall of the protagonist. It was not
uncommon to see playwrights stray away from this classical approach in tragic literature as writing
conventions became less restricted over time. Sophocles' Oedipus Rex (430 B.C.) and Jean
Cocteau's The Infernal Machine (1934) highlight the conceptual differences of heroism, destiny, and
a man's consciousness to the influence of the period it was written in. Handling the same myth,
Cocteau conveys how a legend's adaptability is present thousands of years later and he questions the
illusory heroic qualities of Oedipus in Sophocles' original play. Whereas both authors argue that
Oedipus was blinded by his own arrogance, in the original Oedipus Rex, Sophocles depicts Oedipus
as a noble tragic hero who owns up to his sins while in The Infernal Machine, Cocteau mocks the
concept of the tragic hero, depicting Oedipus as ignoble with a helpless demise. Though both texts
follow the same plot, Cocteau modifies the motives of Oedipus to reinvent the traditional status and
role of the tragic hero. Sophocles and Cocteau both seem to agree that the obstinate,

Sophocles' Oedipus the King and Cocteau's The Infernal Machine
Sophocles' Oedipus the King and Cocteau's The Infernal Machine relate the same story, yet from

17 years, putting much more emphasis on the events prior to where Sophocles begins his play.
Sophocles and Cocteau present Oedipus' character in different lights, and through these characters

Sophocles' Oedipus is a clever man and a sage ruler. Unfortunately, he thinks too much of himself
and believes that he knows better than the gods.
Cocteau's Oedipus lacks wisdom and behaves in a silly manner. The Infernal Machine presents
Cocteau's vision of what transpired between Oedipus and the Sphinx. In this version, the sphinx
blindly chooses Oedipus to be Thebes' savior and even answers the riddle for him. She picks him
because she has a crush on him and is bored with her job. This Oedipus becomes king out of luck
and rules very much like a child. All this Oedipus strives for is "action, adventure."(Cocteau,
Infernal Machine, p.45) Even the Sphinx says, "The fool! He understood nothing."(Cocteau, Infernal
Machine, p. 53) Of course, by not understanding what transpired with the sphinx, Cocteau's Oedipus
believes himself to be a genius and an able ruler. Of course he can not
even make it through his nightmares without the support of Jocasta, his wife/mother.

What is M2M & IoT?
Machine to Machine (M2M) is a broad label that can be used to describe any technology that
enables networked devices to exchange information and perform actions without the manual
assistance of humans. Products built with M2M communication capabilities are often marketed to

Safety of Employees in the Industry
There are many jobs in the world that are very dangerous, and might cause serious injury to
employees, such as: police, firefighter, construction, install or repair electrical, and more. Therefore,
employees' safety is an essential component of any industry. They want secure that their employee
does not get an accident, or injuring while working. Today, many companies are giving safety
handbook for their employee to follow the rules and get understandable about the safety in the
company. However, to improve the safety for the workers, many industries have developed their
machinery, have their employee to train, and make sure that their workers are working in a good

Improving machinery is the one of the most priority that many industries should have done for their

because the machines were not built with the detection vibration. For example, in the story,
"Monkey Palm", Mr. White's son, Herbert, was killed by the machinery because the technology back
then was not proficient compared today's technology. Nevertheless, today, many machines are
having a monitor vibration inside of it, and the employee will be given a warning if there a missing
part in the machine. Also, it is automatically shutting down the machine before it reaches to the
dangerous level. However, with the monitor vibration today, it will help many employees to protect

What was technology before the information era?
Society revolves around the advancements of technology for the improve efficiency for task and

and computers, something that is categorized with those or relate to them in some way, but was this
the start of technology? The word "technology" has been around longer than the average person

improvements that advance us to where we are currently. From elements, communication,
discoveries, and manufacturing, the idea of technology is considered to be a flexible and progressive

revealing the semantic changes in the connotation of the word technology and providing a
chronological sequence of related conceptions, we can acknowledge how current technology
changes our perception of the term.
From the first usage of the term "technology," it has always been related to the constructing or

As well as using spot welding I also used pop riveting to join the sheet metal together. To create my

multi–forming press break and sheer to cut a straight line on the sheet metal. Overall I used two

When measuring out my component blank I used a ruler to measure the lengths and widths. To make

they were as accurate as possible.
To make sure that my components were cut out accurately, I first cut a straight line on one of the

they were accurate.
Before I started creating my toolbox, I was given drawings, which had the measurements and

Ban On Weapons And War Machinery That Were Controlled By...

  • 1. Ban On Weapons And War Machinery That Were Controlled By... In July 28, 2015, a letter was addressed at the International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence at Argentina that petitioned for a ban on weapons and war machinery that were controlled by artificial intelligence. Its rapidly increasing research and growth posed a threat to the safety of humanity and its beneficial value. The letter openly stated that technology had reached a point where the creation of autonomous machines would be reachable in a matter of years. Letting the development continue could possibly result in the mass production of these weapons and accessible to all kinds of civilians and malicious forces such as terrorists and dictators. Thus, the 2500+ researchers who agreed with the letter said that they find "no ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, these machines have been given an increasing amount of freedom such as a 24/7 watch for intruders, unlike humans, and the ability to shoot at their own will. The topic of giving these machines a certain degree of freedom and moral value has been a subject of controversy. Should machines be given free will beyond human control? Many researches and philosophers like Patrick Lin spoke against the issue of the letter, saying that it is "a useful letter of awareness, but nobody can predict whether robots will gain full autonomy in the future." (Lin qtd. in Knight Par.8) While the idea of preserving human lives, the danger of robots given their free will could result in more than the deaths of the adversary, but also innocent civilians. The liberty of the robots will make them persons and not necessarily comply with our demands, since their freedom is superior to our control. In what follows, I will argue that war robots are not persons and should not be given a higher level of autonomy and moral value and that humans should keep them under control. "Robots reduce the need for humans in combat and therefore save the lives of soldiers, sailors and pilots. What parent would send their child into a war zone if a robot could do the job instead?" (Parkin Par. 8) Certainly, human lives are fragile and are not finite, but one must not forget to consider ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Will Robots Render Humans Jobless? Jagjit Bhatia Mrs. Derrow English III 3 November, 2015 Will Robots Render Humans Jobless? A man walks into his office. He is greeted by a robot who brings him his coffee: a Pumpkin Spice Latte with exactly a tablespoon of pumpkin pie spice, a quarter cup of brewed espresso, and perfect amounts of cream and sugar. The man walks to his office area and sits down in front of his computer, in which he opens up an analytics software that gives him information regarding the amount of work achieved by each of his robots. A group of supervisors and managers monitor the robots, ensuring that each task is completed. This is the work environment of the future, a work environment in which humans are no longer the workers and, instead, are the managers and administrators: A work environment in which humans are the bosses. While machines are increasingly replacing humans in the workforce, robots and machines will not render humans jobless and will, instead, provide more employment opportunities for people in the future since qualities such as human–to–human interaction, creativity, and human intelligence will always be in demand and can never be replaced by a machine of any sort. In order to deeply investigate the issue of future jobs for humans, it is vital for one to know the basics of the job market. The job market, as with any other market, runs on supply and demand. This means that when there is a low supply of a job and a high demand for it, the salaries for that job skyrocket. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Case 8-22 Group 11: Nguyen Thi Thu Huyen Nguyen Thi Dieu Linh Mai Ngoc Tam Nguyen Lan Anh Case 8–22: Evaluating a company's budget procedures 1. Identify the problems that appear to exist in Ferguson & Son Manufacturing Company's budgetary control system and explain how the problems are likely to reduce the effectiveness of the system. Ferguson & Son Manufacturing Company has appointed Robert Ferguson, Jr., the son of the president as the plant manager. He directed the company's focus on budgetary control system. The prime aims of the system were reducing inefficiencies and seeking cost reductions. However, the results extracted from the conversation of Tom Emory – manager of the machine shop in the company's factory and Jim Morris – manager of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This could significantly damage the reputation of the company as well as make it lose trust from loyal customers. To sum up, the budgetary control system had its advantage of knowing in advance what was happening in each department. While instead of improvement, budgetary control system adopted in Ferguson & Son Manufacturing Company had made the whole working process more worsened. 2. Explain how Ferguson & Son Manufacturing Company's budgetary control system could be revised to improve its effectiveness. Budgetary control system is an essential management tool that communicates management's plans throughout the organization, allocates resources, and coordinates activities. Besides, unwise system can have the negative effects on the performance of the company. Thus, it is vital to develop a compatible budgeting system which can assist managers in fulfilling long–term goals and strategic plans. First, drawn from the situation of Ferguson & Son Manufacturing Company, it is pointed out that feasible targets play the first priority in designing the budgeting system. If the goal is too high as in the case of Ferguson & Son Manufacturing Company, then, in the following steps, the whole process automatically gets into trouble. The company should be realistic when setting any benchmark among the periods of manufacturing. The conditions of equipment, employees, orders, sales, and the coordination among other departments should be taken into account to jump to the most suitable ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Man-vs-Machine: Who Wll Win the War? Essay Man–vs–machine: who will win the war? Man vs Machine has been a debatable topic for centuries. So, when did it all start? One started to question the expansion of technological development after the Industrial Revolution in England. The great revolution of machines started with the "Watt Steam Engine" which clearly revolutionized transportation and factory production. Machines continue to experience development and media appraise till our current day. Where does the Man fit in? The inventor of those machines and the one responsible for the machines' development is currently living an inevitable fear of "artificial intelligence." Many influential people such as the futurist "Ray Kurzweil" argue that machines may be more productive and more ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The supporters believe that the benefits and the positive impact of machines outweigh the negative impact on mankind. Machine supporters believe that if singularity, the "hypothetical moment in time when artificial intelligence will have progressed to the point of a greater–than–human intelligence" occurs, humans will not be obligated to comply with machines and accept to be overpowered. Instead, supporters believe that by that time, mankind would have evolved in ways to insure human's survival in a world with highly intelligent machines. Many supporters believe that humans could merge themselves with machines. That is, get a cybernetic, robotic part implanted within their bodies to enhance their powers. Therefore, allowing them to keep up with powerful machinery. The idea of merging with machines might seem insane; however, it has been done already. The first cyborg was invented around a hundred years ago. For instance, in 1958, Arne Larsson, was the first person to receive a cybernetic implant. Arne was given an implanted pacemaker, which kept him alive and mobile until he died in his 80s. This was achieved with the primitive knowledge mankind had back in 1958. Therefore, if humans continue to enhance and develop technologies, the next decade would surely witness even more magnificent implant inventions. A debatable topic always has its supporters and its sceptics. Just as much as there are supporters of machines there are humans who oppose and even ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Factory Workers: Changing America's Economy Factory workers have always been seen as the backbone of America's economy. The gritty employees would work day in and day out, callusing their hands and providing for their families. A once lively and busy factory is now a quiet and calm . Now, a cold steel machine routinely does the same work, replacing the live worker. It was to further the industry that this transition was made. While they were introduced to help their human co–workers, in some aspects it also set them back. After the introduction of robots in factory settings some workers were cut because their position was obsolete. It was because of this, and many other factors, that there is much to compare and contrast when speaking of technology in the factory industry. Although this integration strengthened this field, it is because of this change that the business shifted, and the economy began to fall. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During this time great changes were taking place in order to encourage growth of the factory industry, and a flourishing middle class. Machinery was intended to have the same effect it does today; they are used to aid workers and lessen the strain put on employees. In this aspect their introduction has been greatly beneficial. The aid that machines have given to workers come in many different forms. In many cases, repetitious acts are taken out the picture. Tedious work that once needed to be done by human employees is now a worry of the past. Actually, Blue from Vista Industrial Products Inc. (2016) claims that "when an automated machine is programmed to perform a task over and over again, the accuracy and repeatability compared to an employee is far greater" (p. 1). ... Treadmills are devices or work–out machines that make the user walk while staying at the same place. Users can also run on these machines as fast as they want to. Treadmills are great machines that can improve one's stamina and speed. Some people also use these machines to train animals such as dogs and horses. The treadmill was introduced even before the experts developed the power machine. The idea of the power machine came from manpower–operated mills that used people and animals to make it run. These mills were operated by animals such as horse, donkeys, and cow that grinded the grain to make flour out of it. Now, people are using treadmills as workout machines or exercise machines that would keep them in shape or increase their power. • 13. American Workers Are More Beneficial And Cost Efficient... Many American workers are at risk of losing their jobs to man–made machinery. One author, Adam Davidson, wrote "Making It in America," and he argues that American workers are more beneficial and cost efficient than machinery. He uses his interview with Standard Motor Products employee, Maddie Parlier, to build his argument. Maddie is a low educated worker who was forced to take the job at SMP when she became pregnant her senior year of high school. Though she was quick and effective working the laser–welding machine, the unskilled job increased her chance of being replaced by a machine. Many manufacturing companies have found machines more efficient, but don't realize the effect on American workers. Davidson builds his credibility with logical facts and statistics, and displaying emotional appeals to influence the audience; however, by the end of his article, his ability to influence his readers with his supporting facts strengthens his argument. Throughout "Making It in America," Davidson uses his personal experiences to strengthen his credibility and support his argument. The author's sources come from personal interactions with the Standard Motor Products Company, including interviews with Maddie Parlier, Luke Hutchins (skilled machinists at SMP), and manager Tony Scalzitti. Tony comes to explain that, "Maddie is cheaper than a machine," (Davidson 338). The manager tells us that low–skilled workers are capable of being trained in a short amount of time, while ... Smart Machines: Trending Technology Smart Machines: Trending Technology If the name Watson was mentioned in the IT world, more than likely everyone would know what the name was associated with. Watson, a computer that can interact with humans, sense, decipher and recognize questions and answer them with unbelievable accuracy. Watson's introduction to the 21st century was aired on the popular TV show "Jeopardy." The competition Watson faced while playing on the game show were some of the best players to ever play the game. A one–word summary of how the human mind compared to the smart machine over the course of three episodes was undesirable. Watson embarrassed two of the best players to ever participate in the show. The speed at which Watson processed verbal questions and answered them was nothing short of amazing. It was evident that each member of the team that created Watson had a strong sense of accomplishment for how his or her machine preformed. So now there is a really smart machine that can win on a game show, big deal. What does this really mean? Although Watson is an exception to the current list of smart machines, there are still many of them, and as evident with Watson, the IT world is continuing to press forward and enhance the smartness of each machine. The Labor Relations case puts into doubt whatever standing one has about this issue. In this case, Tom the company's new Loss Control Specialist, is the one deciding if he should throw away all evidence older than five years incriminating the company of unsafe practices or reveal to Stubbs that there are documents older than five year. If Tom throws away the documents, he may not suffer any physical consequences, but could possibly cost his friend Stubbs a court case. • 23. Essay On Machine Scheduling Description Of Machine Scheduling 1–1 Definition Of The Scheduling Problem Scheduling is the process of assigning limited resources to a set of jobs over a period of time. The resources may be machine in a workshop, runways at an airport and crews at a construction site, as well as processing units in a computing environment. The jobs may be operation in the production process, take–offs and landing at an airport, stages in a construction project, executions of computer programs[30]. The goal of scheduling is to assign resources to the jobs such that one or more objective are optimized. Scheduling becomes an important concern when resources are limited and need to be utilized to complete many competing jobs efficiently. Many real world scheduling problem are multi–objective by nature. This is accomplished by determining a sequence that includes each job, and it assigns the jobs to its source. Each job can give a priority, ready time, processing time, and due date. The value of the performance measure can be computed on the base of this information and the sequence of jobs. The firm needs to consider all costs in deciding whether to keep the current machines or purchase the Vulcan Mold–Maker. Buying the Vulcan machine will result in year 0 outflows of 1.01 million euros, but will enable the company to sell the old machines which will result in a net year 0 outflow of 880,000 euros. On the other hand, the need for higher capacity may in fact be needed if the effects of an improved product contribute to more market share. There is a projected inflation rate of 3%. Applying this rate to all costs, minus depreciation, we find that the effect is a lower NPV and raise the EAC for both decisions. However, purchasing the Vulcan machine still remains to have the lower EAC. Thus, all other things equal, the purchasing the Vulcan seems to quantitatively be the better decision. There are also a few other small impacts which are not factored into the EAC. The Vulcan frees up 15% of floor space and also has a maximum capacity that is 30% higher than the current machines. In the near future this may be irrelevant because there is no need for more floor space and the current machines are only operating at 90% capacity as it is, but these should still be considered added benefits as unforeseeable market conditions over the next eight years may warrant the need for added capacity. After considering both qualitative and quantitative impacts of the decision, it would be my recommendation to purchase the Vulcan machine. All of the data shows that the Vulcan machine will be less costly and more efficient. What the data does not show however is the critical assumption that the laborers will be able to be laid off without dispute. If there is conflict from the labor ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

P1 The materials mostly used to make the parts is plastic for the handle, steel bar and chromium (or nickel) for the steel tip of the screwdriver. For the steel bar, large amounts of green wire is sent to a factory. The wire is drawn to the correct size diameter by a machine and after the wire is made into a rod. Then the rod is made to its correct size by being put inside a die. To produce the correct strength for the wire goes through heating treating. It is heated for around 12 hours for the best strength. Once this is done, by using a string forge the wire is straightened and is put in a cold forming press. This makes the wire have its correct length by cutting it, it also forms the screwdriver tip and the wings for the handle for it to correctly fit. After this, by the heated wire. In His article "Better than Human: Why Robots Will–and Must–Take Our Jobs", Kevin Kelly discusses how robots and machines have been taking over our jobs and how this will only become more common in our everyday lives. He believes it is a good and necessary thing that AI take over our jobs, because it will improve our society and increase productivity. Kelly's essay is an accurate depiction of the future of technology and how it will impact our lives. Kelly introduces his essay with a some statistics. Two hundred years ago, 70 percent of American workers lived and worked on a farm. Today, however, machines and robots have taken over all but 1 percent of those jobs. The, The Infernal Machine, And Ubu Roi By Alfred Jarry In the three plays that we have discussed in class, Antigone by Jean Anouilh, The Infernal Machine by Jean Cocteau, and Ubu Roi by Alfred Jarry, there is a prodigious depiction of female characters and power that come in numerous ways. In The Infernal Machine there are female characters, such as Jocasta and the Sphinx, who show power and authority. Likewise, in "Antigone," characters, such as Antigone and her sister, Ismene, also show power and supremacy. In Ubu Roi, the main character that showed power through rule was Mere Ubu. From being a woman of authority, to rebelling against men with a greater authority than them, to doing what you want no matter if it was right or wrong for the people, these characters truly show what it is to be a woman of power in one way or another. Characters in both plays display power in innumerable means, and it shows the leadership of women. John C. Maxwell once said, "A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way." Women in these plays do what they can to show power, in their each individual ways. In Cocteau's The Infernal Machine, Oedipus is the main character of the play showing power, but the women in the play also depict power in additional ways. • 37. The Departed And Infernal Affairs After watching both films, it is safe to say that Infernal Affairs out–ranks the Departed by a substantial amount. The Departed is an American remake of the Chinese film Infernal Affairs. Both movies reveal the secret life of moles for a gang and the police force. Even though the Departed stays pretty close to the original screenplay, there are some differences that both add to each film and takes away from the plot. In all, besides their differences, the Departed and Infernal Affairs both create a thrilling story of the mafia. The first major difference that caught my eye is the similar love interest in the Departed. In this rendition, Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon) both share an interest with the police psychiatrist. This adds a unique way to connect the characters. Throughout the film, Billy and Colin never met or interacted with each other. However, with both of them visiting the psychiatrist, it provides them with a connection. This creates a sense of knowledge to the audience. It gives a sense of a what–if scenario. When I learned of this same love interest, I kept thinking "what if they both decided to meet her at the same time, what would happen". This gave me a suspense not like other murder thrillers, but more of a what if they finally meet moment. Another difference that is noteworthy is when the police chief is thrown off the building by the gang members. The Departed created a more realistic scene to me rather than ... The Character of Oedipus in Oedipus and The Infernal Machine The Character of Oedipus in Oedipus and The Infernal Machine The stories of Oedipus, as told through Seneca's Oedipus and Cocteau's The Infernal Machine, contain both similarites and differences. Both authors portray the character of Oedipus as being obstinate, ignorant, and inquisitive. Yet Seneca and Cocteau differ on their interpretation of the motives that propelled these characteristics of Oedipus. Seneca portrays Oedipus as a mature man who, in seeing the troubles of the plague that has descended upon Thebes, feels true sorrow for his dying people and wishes to cure his moribund city. Jocasta and Creon also try to warn Oedipus of the impending truth, but it is to no avail, as Oedipus will not heed their pleas. Contrary to one another, are Seneca and Cocteau's views on Oedipus's reasons for being so pertinacious in his search for the killer of Laius. Seneca's Oedipus, a stately, old, and sage man, is committed to his role as king. The rise of technology has unfolded into the betterment of many advances in the industry. However, it is no surprise that these advances have also caused society into depending so much on technology. Author Sherry Turkle, argued that we as a society have distanced ourselves from one another; she discusses her observations drawn from human beings and their interaction with social machines. She indicated that humans rely much more on technology which has negatively impacted the way we communicate with one another. Every individual has their own flaws. In our imperfections, we tend to discriminate among one another, we have preconceived notion based on what we have seen or experienced. Perhaps, there is a say that goes 'a book should never be judged by its cover '. As a result of our dependency on technology, humans are failing each other and the constant rise of technology should not be blame for it, as we do have control over some of these issues. The constantly evolving world in which all businesses must operate necessitate a commitment to being energy efficient. Initially, it is possible to reduce the energy consumption for a business, with some relatively small steps. Collecting all the waste paper from the office bins, to be mulched and compressed into fuel bricks, which are then burned to produce the heat for the office, is one step too far for most businesses. From the early time until before 1842, Hong Kong was considered to be a territory of China. In 1842, China officially ceded Hong Kong to the British after the First Opium War due to the rise of British's power; and from that moment to 1997, Hong Kong had been remaining as a British's colony and experiencing the very distinct cultural development and social changes. The year 1997 marked the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In addition, the sense of disorientation is also displayed through the way the past story and present story are narrated. The story of Fleur and the story of the present couple are not presented in linear time from past to present but in the way that the past and the present are intermingled and its boundary is blurred. Also, the story of Fleur is in the past tense but it is an unfinished story which keeps presenting and haunting the present. The confusion projected by the merger of past and present clearly speaks to the feeling of disorientation of Hong Kong people when facing with their dramatic future changes. Experiencing that undesirable feelings, Hong Kong people yearn for their past as a mean of escaping from the awful reality. Their longing to the past is expressed in the juxtaposition of 1930s–Hong Kong and 1980s–Hong Kong. As mention above, the past story of Fleur and the story of present couple, Yuan Ting and Chu, are intermingled. One of the purposes of the juxtaposition is to highlight and emphasize the world of difference between two versions of Hong Kong. The society of Hong Kong in 1980s is depicted through the life of the present couple who are both so occupied with their works; they do not even have enough time for work, let alone time for pleasure and relax. • 57. Ignoble Downfall : Oedipus Rex And The Infernal Machine Lena Khalidi Megan Vasavada AP Literature 16 October 2017 A Noble vs. Ignoble Downfall: Oedipus Rex and The Infernal Machine Originating from the philosopher, Aristotle, the characterization of "pity and fear" developed into an idea present in classic Greek tragedies (Oedipus Packet). As the outcome of these emotions, the audience experiences catharsis in response to the inevitable downfall of the protagonist. It was not uncommon to see playwrights stray away from this classical approach in tragic literature as writing conventions became less restricted over time. Sophocles' Oedipus Rex (430 B.C.) and Jean Cocteau's The Infernal Machine (1934) highlight the conceptual differences of heroism, destiny, and a man's consciousness to the influence of the period it was written in. Handling the same myth, Cocteau conveys how a legend's adaptability is present thousands of years later and he questions the illusory heroic qualities of Oedipus in Sophocles' original play. Whereas both authors argue that Oedipus was blinded by his own arrogance, in the original Oedipus Rex, Sophocles depicts Oedipus as a noble tragic hero who owns up to his sins while in The Infernal Machine, Cocteau mocks the concept of the tragic hero, depicting Oedipus as ignoble with a helpless demise. Though both texts follow the same plot, Cocteau modifies the motives of Oedipus to reinvent the traditional status and role of the tragic hero. Sophocles and Cocteau both seem to agree that the obstinate, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Sophocles' Oedipus the King and Cocteau's The Infernal Machine Sophocles' Oedipus the King and Cocteau's The Infernal Machine relate the same story, yet from quite different angles. Sophocles' play is written in heightened language and spends 1,530 lines on an hour of time. On the other hand, Cocteau's characters speak colloquially, and his 96 pages cover 17 years, putting much more emphasis on the events prior to where Sophocles begins his play. Sophocles and Cocteau present Oedipus' character in different lights, and through these characters express contrary themes. Sophocles' proud yet wise Oedipus reveals that a human's future is determined by his actions, while Cocteau's haughty yet immature Oedipus suggests that mortals' ... Unfortunately, he thinks too much of himself and believes that he knows better than the gods. Cocteau's Oedipus lacks wisdom and behaves in a silly manner. The Infernal Machine presents Cocteau's vision of what transpired between Oedipus and the Sphinx. In this version, the sphinx blindly chooses Oedipus to be Thebes' savior and even answers the riddle for him. She picks him because she has a crush on him and is bored with her job. This Oedipus becomes king out of luck and rules very much like a child. All this Oedipus strives for is "action, adventure."(Cocteau, Infernal Machine, p.45) Even the Sphinx says, "The fool! He understood nothing."(Cocteau, Infernal Machine, p. 53) Of course, by not understanding what transpired with the sphinx, Cocteau's Oedipus believes himself to be a genius and an able ruler. Of course he can not even make it through his nightmares without the support of Jocasta, his wife/mother. <block quote>OEDIPUS. Help! Here! Come here! Anybody! Help me! JOCASTA. Xacc/280 Week 2 Mini Case Decisions Day 50: Given that a machine cost us the same price on day 50 of the simulation as it did on day 217, and the fact that buying each machine represents a tradeoff of gaining higher potential for profits in the future (through the fact that more machines afford us greater utilization at each station) for a lower cash balance in the present, we felt it was best to try to determine how many machines we would need and purchase them at the beginning of day 51. We then determined our best course of action would be to look at our average daily revenue per job (Exhibit 7) and see if we could identify any days when that was less than the maximum of $1,000/job, so we could attempt to investigate what days to check on for other issues. We noticed that around day 31, revenues dipped slightly, despite the fact that the simulation was still nowhere near peak demand, suggesting that something was amiss in our process. Based on this, we then decided to look at the utilization and queue figures on, leading up to, and after day 31 at each station, so we could attempt to identify any potential bottlenecks. Due to the difficulties of accurately predicting order quantities however, we would have decided to batch our material orders into 2 or 3 batches. Today, many companies are giving safety handbook for their employee to follow the rules and get understandable about the safety in the company. However, to improve the safety for the workers, many industries have developed their machinery, have their employee to train, and make sure that their workers are working in a good condition environment. Improving machinery is the one of the most priority that many industries should have done for their employees. Back in the 1900s, many were people are dying or having serious injuries to them because the machines were not built with the detection vibration. For example, in the story, "Monkey Palm", Mr. White's son, Herbert, was killed by the machinery because the technology back then was not proficient compared today's technology. Nevertheless, today, many machines are having a monitor vibration inside of it, and the employee will be given a warning if there a missing part in the machine. During the course of this project, we expanded on my existing knowledge and I leaned about the content of risk assessments and how to write one correctly. They were useful because after writing a risk assessment for the spot welder I was able to identify all the hazards and dangers associated with that piece of equipment. I then felt confident with using it safely. I encountered a minor injury while using a junior hacksaw on the burr from the sheet metal. To deal with this I ran my finger under the cold tap and then put a plaster on to stop the bleeding. Another safety issue that accrued while creating my toolbox was that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As well as using spot welding I also used pop riveting to join the sheet metal together. To create my handle I used the forging machine to heat the metal up so that I was then able to bend it to the correct shape and angles. As well as using the junior hacksaw to cut the sheet metal I used the multi–forming press break and sheer to cut a straight line on the sheet metal. Overall I used two forming fabrication processes, two joining and two cutting processes. When measuring out my component blank I used a ruler to measure the lengths and widths. To make sure that the angles were correct on my component blank I used a protractor, this was to ensure that they were as accurate as possible. To make sure that my components were cut out accurately, I first cut a straight line on one of the sides of the box, I then cut another straight line using the t–square at a 90–degree angle to my first line. These lines are my datum lines and they are what I measured all my measurements from so that they were accurate. Before I started creating my toolbox, I was given drawings, which had the measurements and tolerances. I then had to interpret these drawings to create my toolbox. While creating the toolbox I had to take into consideration a tolerance of +–0.5mm on any straight lines that were cut, and +– 1.00mm on bends that were made. This meant that I had to make sure that the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
