Similarities Between The Red Scare And The Crucible
"The Crucible" Essay During the 1950s there was a rise in the fear of communism called "The Red
Scare". Senator Joseph McCarthy was one of the many people who contributed to people's fear by
making a list of people who he said were communists even though there was no proof in most cases.
In an article by Alan Brinkley called "The 1950s Part One: McCarthy and The Red Scare", it
informs, "McCarthy was only one of many who helped create the great fear. The Red Scare was
visible in almost every area of American life" (Brinkley). This quote tell us that in the 1950s even
though Senator Joseph McCarthy was a huge contributor to The Red Scare. His list of suspected
communists made rumors spread and the people on the list get questioned and even go to jail when
in some cases they were innocent. It also says in the article by USHistory.org called "McCarthyism:
Witch Hunting and Blacklisting in America", that, "In the 1950s anyone who was considered a
communist could be questioned and thrown in jail" (USHistory.org). Which means that his
allegations could have easily put people in prison.
In the novel by Arthur Miller, "The Crucible", directly correlates with the Red Scare by
implementing a society that is in fear of the people around them and people are given consequences
from crimes they did not even commit. The play is about witchcraft and is based around what
happened during the Salem Witch Trials. The rumors spread from each other made havoc throughout
the community. Most of the rumors spread throughout the play are for people to achieve their own
goals of protection and/or revenge. One could claim that rumors are the root of all trouble in "The
Crucible" in the 16th paragraph of the overture that, "The witch–hunt was a perverse manifestation
of the panic which set in among all classes when the balance began to turn toward greater individual
freedom. In the novel Abigail Williams, the Putnams, and Elizabeth Proctor contribute to some of
the rumors that went around. Abigail Williams makes rumors to protect herself, for revenge, and to
try and take Elizabeth Proctor's place. She is mischievous and lies a lot to protect herself. Parris asks
Abigail, "Then you were conjuring spirits last night", and

Good Night, And Good Luck
The film "Good Night, and Good Luck" portrays and exemplifies the story between Senator Joseph
McCarthy and the CBS news reporter Edward R. Murrow. Within this movie, it reveals and
demonstrates the governmental issues, in the actions of Senator Joseph McCarthy. It also shows the
effects his actions and decisions had on society and the film focuses on would be firstly, the role and
power media plays within politics, beliefs, communism, and the government. It also shows the way
government often takes advantage of their power and they use that power to control humanistic
liberties. Within the actions of senator Joseph McCarthy, it is tremendously obvious that McCarthy's
indifference and disregards for civilian's civil rights and treats ... Show more content on

Due to this specific part of freedom, people were not supposed to be treated any differently by the
government for their political belief, but senator Joseph McCarthy did not respect the individual
liberty which was given to each person. McCarthy decided that since he had more power being
senator of Wisconsin, it meant he had the power to take away the liberty of a man and divert a man's
beliefs by disrespecting and treating them differently due to their political stance.
One of the examples of Senator McCarthy taking advantage of his governmental power over
communist citizens would be, the act which Joseph McCarthy took against Milo Radanovich. Milo
Radulovich was a man who was a lieutenant within the United States air force. Milo was a man with
a communist stance and belief, but Senator McCarthy discharged Milo from the air force. The
senator used the excuse stating that because of Milo being a communist within the United States Air
Force, Milo was a security risk to the government and could no longer serve in the Air Force. Joseph
McCarthy stated that Milo was a security threat to the government, but McCarthy did not have any
form of viable proof to show to support his accusation. This accusation and action show that
McCarthy was taking advantage of the power he held within the government and using it to
disrespect a man and discharge him from his career. The Senator did all of this

Hollywood Ten For my arcival project I chose to research the Hollywood Ten, I chose this because I
am fascinated by the events of that occurred around this time and group. The Hollywood Ten was a
group of writers, directors, and other artists who bravely refused to answer questions in front of the
House of Un–American Activities and were therefore sentenced to jail time and banned from
working in Hollywood. The actions of that the House of Un–American Activities and the resistance
of the Hollywood Ten raised attention and a debate across the country about the actions that the
government was taking against Hollywood artists. The House of Un–American Activities

I find it interesting that so many people were swayed by what they were being told by the
government. I have the impression that American are very gullible and naïve. There had to be more
to what they were doing to convince Americans that Hollywood was friendly with Communists and
poisoning them with their movies. When I think of Americans today, many of them raise an eyebrow
to what the government is telling them. They will also often times do the exact opposite of what the
government is asking them to do. When Mike Bloomberg suggested making it illegal for restaurants
to sell extra large sodas, many people that I know went crazy and would deliberately get extra large
sodas. These people didn't necessarily like soda or need one of that size and most definitely knew
that it was not good for them; however they didn't like the fact that someone from the government
was telling them what they could and could not drink. These people felt that their rights were being
violated. This is how I view most Americans today, they are stubborn and are very protective of their
rights. Which is why I find it hard to believe that people actually bought into the idea that
Hollywood was poisoning them with Communist ideas and were in cahoots with Russia? My first

No State Left Behind: Laws Against Distracted Driving In Idaho and as a Nation The majority of the

every day. Each year a motorcycle hill climbing competition is held in New Plymouth, Idaho called
the Big Nasty Hill Climb. On September 19, 2009 my sister's best friend Lacy Fine set out for a day
of fun with her cousin Brittani and her cousin's boyfriend Carlos to watch the hyped up event. She's

After three years of failed attempts, Idaho officially banned texting while driving on April 5, 2012
with Governor Butch Otter signing house bill 1274a (Russell 1). On July 1st when the law goes into

legislation to standardize laws regarding the use of handheld devices while driving, known as the
Safe Drivers Act of 2011. Her evidence in success of the ban passed in her state of New York was
that, "Laws do work. Immediately after New York banned cell phone use there was a 47 percent

No Country For Old Men
Cormac McCarthy's No Country for Old Men has created controversial views on the significance of
this novel. This piece involves a drug deal gone wrong when Llewelyn Moss, a veteran, happens to
stumble upon three dead bodies, heroine, and a briefcase full of 2 million dollars. Told in different
perspectives, the story continues with Moss on the run from a psychopathic killer Anton Chigurh in
search of the money while also being tracked down by Sheriff Bell. Critics like James Wood from
The New Yorker see this novel as "an unimportant, stripped–down thriller" solely based on the
novel's outer surface . On the other hand, William Cobb from the Houston Chronicle refers to
McCarthy as the greatest living writer and that this novel "... has conjured up a heated story that
brands the reader 's mind...and this is a novel that must be read and remembered"(Cooper 2). The
literary merit of the novel becomes noticeable when looking beyond the thriller perspective.
McCarthy's literary merit in the novel is discrete, which is why it just appears to be a western thriller
that many believe has no greater purpose other than an entertaining story. No Country for Old Men
is a neo western thriller based on its writing style that divides the story into different perspectives
containing elements such as fragmented sentences and untypical dialogue. The novel remains within
the context of a 1980's Texas plot which influences the diction so it can reflect a western
atmosphere. Although it contains

Post Apocalyptic Literature : The End Of The World
While post–apocalyptic literature isn't a new concept, the popularity of post–apocalyptic seems to be
steadily growing. People find stories about the end of the world a thrilling but probable plot to easily
connect to and become sucked into the story line. Even though the plots of post–apocalyptic stories
differ in suggesting how the world may end, post–apocalyptic literature shares common elements
from one story to the next. As one may guess, post–apocalyptic literature carriers a looming sense of
death caused by natural disasters, disease, and even the actions of humans, but post–apocalyptic
literature also contains characters who beat the odds in order to survive by ultimately rejecting their
morals. By examining the context of several post–apocalyptic stories, these common threads
emerge. One element that seems apparent in almost every post–apocalyptic novel is the constant fear
of unavoidable death. The Road takes the classical form of a journey between the man and the boy.
From the beginning of the story, the man and the boy are on a journey south. They aren't traveling to
any specific destination, but are mainly hoping for warmth in the south. However, as the story
progresses, the reader realizes the boy and the man are actually trying to escape the constant fear of
death by following the road. This becomes apparent when the man and the boy reach the destination
of the sea, but are greatly dissatisfied. Throughout the man and the boy's journey, death seems

Essay on Mccarthyism
Vivian Gonzalez Mr. Martinez–Ramos A.P. United States History May 3, 2000 McCarthyism was
one of the saddest events of American history. It destroyed people's lives and shattered many
families. It threw innocent people into a whirlwind of mass confusion and fictional portrayals of
their lives. McCarthyism spawned for the country's new found terror of Communism known as the
red scare. McCarthyism was an extreme version of the red scare, a scare whose ends did not justify
the means. The Red Scare happened twice in the history of this great country. When the communist
took over Russia in 1919, the American people were unnerved. They were afraid of a communist

127) Fear is the most primal instinct. It causes people to do and act in certain ways in which they are
not accustomed. It can turn brother against brother, neighbor against neighbor, politician against
politician, and country against country. Fear instigates panic. It was that panic that prompted the
Palmer Raids. The Palmer Raids were started by A. Mitchel Palmer. He felt that in order to keep the
American values in tact communism had to be out of the picture. Palmer believed that communism
was "eating its way into the American workman". He thought it was the root
of all evils in his society. Palmer felt that communism was "seeking to replace marriage
vows with libertine laws, burning up the foundations of society". In December of 1919,
in their most famous act, Palmer's agents seized 249 resident aliens. Those seized were placed on
board a ship, the Buford, bound for the Soviet Union. Deportees included Emma Goldman the
feminist, anarchist and writer who later recalled the deportation in her autobiography. Another
reason for the Red Scare was the strike held by mine workers. They were thought to be making
threatening moves against the Capitalist system through subversive Socialist organizations. These
strikes were part of a series of events taking place in 1919. This strike,

Television And Its Impact On The World War II
In 1926 John Logie Baird transmitted his first image with his new mechanical television. As the
4"x2" image of his business partner illuminated his face, Baird was completely unaware of the
influence this new medium would have on the opinions and attitudes of the people of the world.
Television represented a new opportunity to bring not only audio like radio but to place an image in
every home. Along with the work of many other inventors television was soon to become a viable
medium of entertainment and news but it did face many setbacks. At first television was a novelty,
completely overshadowed by the established medium of radio. Before World War II very few homes
contained a television and broadcasters mostly aired 15 minute segments and were limited in
technology. Then on September 1, 1939 Hitler and Germany invaded Poland and the world plunged
into World War II. The FCC issued a ban on the construction of television equipment causing the
growth of television to stagnate. At the end of the war economic prosperity and a rising middle class
opened the door for a new rise in the purchase of goods. One such good was the television. In 1947
only a few thousand homes owned a television. By 1950 six million homes contained a television,
and in 1960 around 60 million homes contained a television. During this period a new war was
being waged: the Cold War. In this battle between United States and the Soviet Union ideals
propaganda was the main way to grow support for their cause

Comparing McCarthyism and The Crucible by Arthur Miller Essay
Authors used their literary work to get a point across to the public in the story The Crucible; Arthur
Miller used events and characters to show the similarities to McCarthyism which was prevalent in
the 1950s. McCarthyism was associated with the period in the United Sates also known as the
Second Red Scare. McCarthyism is very similar in the way that Joe McCarthy accused Americans of
being communist and in The Crucible people were being accused of being witches. It is known that
Arthur Miller wrote this story as a reaction to a tragic time in our history.
In both situations people were accused and were found guilty with not much proof. You would think
that the judges would dismiss a case when there wasn't much proof. In The Crucible ... Show more

People lost their jobs and careers went bad and even imprisonment occurred. McCarthy held
hearings called the Hollywood Blacklist, which had to do with The House Committee on Un–
American Activities and anti– communist activities with the FBI.
McCarthyism had great effects on different levels of society, involving conflict and many
arguments. This relates to The Crucible in the sense that the way people were acting changed
dramatically, different and weird because they knew or thought that witches were around. It
destroyed people's relationships, caused chaos in church and separation between people. People
supported Abigail and Rev.Parris in different types of ways. For example when Abigail would say
something and even when it was not true the girls would all follow her moves and lie for her.
McCarthyism was supported by many different groups, including a lot of anti– communist
organizations, there was no solid number for the victims of McCarthyism, and people who were
imprisoned were around the hundreds and ten to twelve thousand lost their jobs. In The Crucible
some were hung and many were being imprisoned nonstop and everyone was being called a witch,
even with no proof. They searched for perverts and ended up in thousands being harassed and
denied employment. In The Crucible John Proctor and Abigail had a quiet affair and

Southern Gothic Literature In William Faulkner's A Rose...

Sad Southern Literature
Southern Gothic Literature is exactly what it implies, works written in the south that are depressing,
they are of isolation, violence, decline, bias, and brutality. These works use mental images and show
a large amount of symbolism. This classification immediately gives any avid reader a mental author
list. If naming an author were a quick answer game show quiz, William Faulkner would gain the
number one position. Flannery O'Connor, for myself, is not a name that comes to mind quickly but
would have caused a gasp when named. Knowing a little more about a few of the writers helps
create the list, for example, Rowan Oak sits hidden behind trees and is approached by a parallel line
of trees staying in the darkness of shade with the servants' quarters close behind. Faulkner's "A Rose
for Emily" could have taken place in any small Delta town and any time, even today.
"A Rose for Emily" is the sad tale of a typical southern woman who did not take the typical southern
woman path. With the death of her father she did not follow the path of planning a funeral or telling
family. The town was at a loss to find a way to handle this death. "Just as they were about to resort
to law and force, she broke down, and they buried her father quickly." This event alone characterizes
the story with the isolation, the grotesque, and decay of her morals. Faulkner is just getting started
with Emily but has given us the symbolism with society looking in on the aging home, unpaid taxes,
and death. Next, we have the addition of Homer Barron, who has come to town temporarily for
work. She is smiting for this tall dark handsome northerner. Faulkner himself does not hide another
small hint about Homer not liking women. But things appear to be as though marriage is a
possibility between the two and then that appears to be another blow that further isolates Emily.
Eccentric Emily then ages with her black hair growing grayer and community curiosity growing
over the decay foul smelling home. Days after her passing when members of the community enter
the home we discover that Emily may have in fact been more southern lady saving

Cormac Mccarthy Dystopian Essay
Year 11 ATAR English– Task 5
Consider how McCarthy has created his post–apocalyptic dystopia. In what ways has he used
language to create the mood of the story and how has he represented the relationship between the
man and his son?
Cormac McCarthy is a well–known fictional author, especially well–known for his dystopian novels
and his ability to lure readers into his books through his language and his depth of writing. His
famous novel "The Road" entices readers in through his well–constructed post–apocalyptic
dystopian genre. McCarthy cleverly uses language techniques such as third person and indirect free
speech. The relationship of the man and his son unveils the true meaning of love and the willingness

This depressing state makes the reader understand the world of darkness they live in, indicating no
light or happiness lives there. The reader also understands that something horrible must have
happened to the world they live in. Darkness is commonly associated with death which can occur
from destruction through fire, civilisation collapsing and destruction of those by other humans. This
particular darkness in the reader's opinion can be associated with post–apocalyptic events. The
theme of dystopian is defined in the novel through the unpleasant new world that our future is
considered to be bound to. Other techniques that have been used in McCarthy's novel include
descriptive language. Descriptive language has been included in the text to create a clearer image of
the surrounding settings of the novel. "No sound but the wind in the bare and blackened trees." This
indicates the new world the novel is set in has been under some destruction. This destruction may
have been caused possibly by a nuclear war or some horrific event. McCarthy has successively been
able to use the language feature throughout his novel, in particular synonyms and descriptive
language, to engage the reader and convince them that the genre of the novel is post–apocalyptic
dystopia.

Analysis Of Cormac Mccarthy 's ' The Road '
How Effectively Does McCarthy Create a
Sense of What a Post–Apocalyptic
World Would be Like?
Cormac McCarthy creates a sense of what a post–apocalyptic society in the novel 'The Road'. He
does this by including dreams, description of the physical landscape and human behaviour. This
helps create a sense of a post–apocalyptic world because it gives us insight into what it looks like
and how the people think.
McCarthy uses dreams as a recurring theme throughout the text in order to create his post–
apocalyptic world. The novel opens with a dream, in which the author creates a monster. The author
uses dreams to create a contrast between a perfect dream world and the cold, dark terrifying world
that the characters live in now. 'Its bowels, its beating heart. The brain that pulsed in a dull glass
bell'. This could be the author creating a metaphor for the horror that the characters are about to face
throughout the book.
Towards the middle of the book the man says that 'The right dreams for a man in peril were dreams
of peril and all else was the call of languor and death. He dreamt of walking in a flowering wood
where birds flew before them... but he was learning how to wake himself from such siren worlds...
with the uncanny taste of a peach from some phantom orchard fading in his mouth...' The father
feels this because his reality and his life are so terrible, he can only have perilous dreams because if
he were to have dreams that were soft, pleasant and warming then they would

Communism : The Red Scare And Was Fed By Joseph Mccarthy
During the late 1940s and the early 1950s, the thought of communism instilled fear within many
Americans because it was portrayed in such a way that confined diversity and corroded political
culture. This fear of communism was nicknamed the "Red Scare" and was fed by Joseph McCarthy's
accusations of hidden communist in the country. The Manchurian Candidate was a black–and–white
American film released in 1962 that depicted the Cold War and the effects that paranoia had on the
nation. It was released at the peak of the Cuban Missile Crisis and the spread of communism. This
film was about Raymond Shaw, the son of a right–wing political family, who was brainwashed to
act as an assassin for his mother in a communist conspiracy theory. Major Bennet (Ben) Marco was
another main character that played an important role in discovering the truth of Shaw's
brainwashing. Raymond Shaw faced the conflict of acting upon his free will while still being
subconsciously manipulated by someone else. Throughout the film, Shaw was shown committing
actions that he does not recall whatsoever later due to his programming which was triggered by the
Queen of Diamonds playing card. Through the use of film techniques, The Manchurian Candidate
creates a scenario which resembles the manifestation of America's "Red Scare" paranoia in that the
film portrays Raymond Shaw as an individual who lacks human agency due to his brainwashing
because of a communist conspiracy. Raymond Shaw's trace–like state while

Similarities Between The Crucible And Mccarthyism
Communism. Witchcraft. These two highly controversial topics are either feared or adored by
people. There are numerous similarities and differences between both, yet one thing is prominent:
they both incite hysteria. The Crucible by Arthur Miller is an allegorical play mirroring 1950's
America during the Red Scare. "McCarthyism" is the act of accusing someone of an act of treason
without substantial evidence. It relies on the uncertainty and the fear of the unknown among people,
which in turn, incites hysteria. Joseph McCarthy accused many people of being communists without
much evidence or reason. The accusations in The Crucible also are proposed without evidence and

In the book, John Proctor says, "I speak my own sins, I cannot judge another." (Act IV pg. 141). In
this quote, John Proctor refuses to condemn others as witches. He states that he can only speak for
himself, and cannot judge another. Just like in The Crucible, people (including Miller) were accused
of being communists, without any substantial evidence. Many of the accused confessed others as
being communists, yet there were a few who refused to give out other names. In both the Red Scare
and The Crucible, those who refused to give names of others' faced punishment. This is an obvious
illustration of the similarities in both The Crucible and the during the Red Scare in Miller's life.
In both The Crucible and McCarthyism, people are accused of being either witches or communists.
The accused are placed in such a dire situation where they are either forced to lie to save
themselves, or to remain honest, at the risk of their social or physical lives. In The Crucible, John
Proctor is accused of practicing witchcraft, and when asked if he is a witch, he responds,"Why it is a
lie, it is a lie; how may I damn myself? I cannot, I cannot." (Act IV pg. 140) He refuses to confess to
something he did not do, even if lying means that he can save his life. During the McCarthy trials,
people who were accused of being communists refused to confess that they were, although it hurt

Sheltering Sky versus Blood Meridian Essay
Extreme circumstances bring about substantial changes in people. At least that is what Paul Bowles
and Cormac McCarthy seem to be saying in the writing of their respective books, The Sheltering
Sky and Blood Meridian. Both authors place their characters in difficult locations, dealing with
difficult people and expect them to emerge changed, for better or for worse. In The Sheltering Sky,
Bowles takes his American trio and places them in the desert lands of the African continent where
the wide, dry impossibly desolate terrain takes its toll on their minds and bodies. Likewise,
McCarthy takes his ragged bunch of marauders, most prominently the Kid, and has them wandering
the massive expanse of the untamed west. This convention of forced ... Show more content on

Both parties chance upon characters, both eccentric and dangerous, and all involved seem to get
themselves into the most impossible situations imaginable. Apparently the point Bowles and
McCarthy are trying to convey to the reader is that great change and substantial inner growth can
only come about through intense emotional stress and physical challenge.
Kit, in The Sheltering Sky, learns some very interesting things about herself through the course of
our travels with her. She starts out as Port's wife, a secondary character of sorts, afraid to voice her
opinions on virtually everything. We have the inside track on her thought s and feelings though, and
are privy to the fact that she is unhappy not only with her situation and current location, but also
with her marriage and identity. We get our first glimpse of her realization of these problems on her

symptom of her unhappiness and is the beginning of a downward spiral that takes her to the brink of
insanity and far beyond. We see the beginning of her growth in her encounter in the Fourth Class

The Issue Of Paid Parental Leave
INTRODUCTION
Is America falling behind the rest of the world in terms of the services it provides? As a proud
citizen of this great nation I, unfortunately, have to say "yes." Our once outstanding country has
been falling behind in a number of areas including technology, education, economics, and yes, even
in family care! America is now one of only three industrialized countries that hasn't set up a
nationwide policy for paid parental leave. With this knowledge I desired to know more, particularly
if we as a nation are not doing much to rectify the situation. Then, to learn if any states were doing
something about this issue which effects so many people in the workforce. I wanted to see exactly
how far behind, compared to the rest world, we are in the issue of paid parental leave. The Pew
Research Center conducted a study of government supported leave in 38 OECD countries, and
found that the US had the lowest figures with zero weeks of paid leave. Though we did fare better
when it came to the number of weeks provided for protected leave with 12 weeks. We were still far
worse than most other OECD countries (see Figure 1 at right). Knowing that we were rated worse I
wanted to know what people are saying that we can and should be doing to change this situation?

Setting in One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest Essay
Ken Kesey's "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" is a unique fiction novel about oppression and
rebellion in an American 1950's Mental Hospital. In this highly distinctive novel, setting definitely
refers to the interior, the interiors of the Institution. It also refers to the period this novel this was set
in, the 50's, 60's where McCarthyism was dominant. Furthermore, it has great symbolic value,
representing issues such as the American struggle of freedom and conformity. This essay shall
discuss the ‘setting' & its significance towards Ken Kesey's "One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest".

Also, any person who unpatriotically supported communism was harshly dealt with. These events
were represented in an exact scale model of the Mental Institution. Anyone who dared to cause an
uproar was humiliated in group therapy sessions, or given Electroshock Therapy, or in extreme cases
such as McMurphy, lobotomy. In the hospital, McMurphy represented the rebel, the opposer to the
Combine (McCarthyism), the one who wanted to break free of society's conformity.
Setting is also important, as it refers to the period this book was set in, the 1950's. Ultimately, it is a
reflection of what was happening in American society at the time, and what American society
expected from each other. McCarthyism, as started by Senator Joseph McCarthy, was the most
prevalent movement of the 1950's, where there was great momentum for anti–communism and the
suppression of the Anti–communist party. Freedom of speech was suppressed, just like speech and
actions were inside the hospital. Here, the Combine and Nurse Ratched act like the McCarthy
"representatives", where the patients are seen as members of the public, having their every word and
movement under close scrutiny.
Kesey has also given this novel great Symbolic value. As an opposer to the McCarthy scheme, he
has used the mental hospital as a scale model of how society breaks free of society's conformity.
McMurphy acts as the ‘liberator', or rebel of the ward's excessively strict conformity. He saves the
patients from "the

The Discipline Of Environmental History
The discipline of Environmental History is found within various books, and many times these books
do not use this history as their only starting point. By combining a multitude of studies and
methodologies, authors explore the aspects of the environment and nature along with human
interaction to understand how they commingle, affecting one another. In the following four books,
scholars from varying backgrounds approach environmental history in a variety of ways in order to
prove their thesis. Their methodologies form their thought process and lead to the structure of these
books. By digging deeper into this process, revealing their intentions, enabling readers to understand
how methodology fuels the writing process, creating an argument, and producing valuable work.
A strong cooperation lies at the heart of Lisa M. Brady's article entitled, Has Environmental History
Lost Its Way? and sets the tone for many of the following books. She reveals that in order to study
environmental history one must not necessarily be trained in that field. Rather, a conglomeration of
backgrounds can provide insight into the study. Additionally, her article takes a materialistic
approach, suggesting that straying too far from this idea will lead to the breakdown of this study.
While this seems to be the foundation of her article, her ultimate goal is a juxtaposition between the
previous approach and the idea that expanding the field is vital in creating a contemporary narrative.

which these people attempt to survive are very different. The Road highlights the varying extremes
that people will go to in order to keep their lives. Also, The Road portrays the main characters'
varying motivations to survive and hints at which character is more disposed to surviving in this
cruel, new world. Throughout the novel, the characters go to varying extremes to survive. Some
characters aim to survive while still keeping their morals intact while others abandon all human
decency and do absolutely anything that is required for their survival. The father and the son are the
characters who survive while not doing anything that they feel will diminish or jeopardize their
goodness. Many times in the novel, the father and son come across supplies that seemingly do not
belong to anyone anymore. However, each time of their fortuitous fortune, the boy always needs
reassurance that whoever the supplies had belonged to will not need them again. Also, when the
father and son come across a supply–deficient old man traveling on the road, the son begs his father
to share some of their supplies with him. Because of their own dismal supplies and the ongoing
uncertainty of acquiring new ones,

The Right Of Free Speech
Throughout American history, the foundation on which American democratic principles are based,
has been repeatedly tested. In the 1700s, the right of free speech was challenged when President
John Adams proposed the Alien and Sedition Acts. Adams attempted to stop the Democratic
Republicans such as Thomas Jefferson, from criticizing government decisions. Similarly, during the
Civil War President Abraham Lincoln challenged freedom of the press when he took action to
restrict the printing of military news. Lincoln ordered his generals in the field to control the press
and "crack down on speech critical of his administration" to limit dissent against the war effort.
However, one historical era stands out as a decidedly pivotal test of ... Show more content on

"Twentieth–century U.S. history saw two major episodes of repression and violence against
communists and leftist radicals," that occurred approximately three decades apart. During the early
part of the 1920s, America entered its first period of extreme anti–communist sentiment, the First
Red Scare. After the successful Bolshevik Revolution in Russia in 1917, American citizens began to
fear the threat of communist influence at home. At the end of WWI, American workers unhappy
with wages and spiralling inflation, launched widespread sometimes violent strikes with the support
of growing labor unions. Some of these unions called for government takeover of private industries.
For instance, railroad workers called for the national government to take permanent control of the
railroad system. The growing waves strikes signalled a period of extreme civil unrest; American
citizens became frightened that they would face a revolution similar to the one that had just taken
place in Russia. In response, Attorney General A. Mitchell Palmer, in an effort to gain the attention
of American voters to support his presidential aspirations, launched a nationwide crusade against
anyone he identified as having leftist views. Under Palmer's leadership, thousands of Americans
were arrested for taking part in alleged subversion, and thousands of others were stripped of their
civil liberties. "In violation of

if everyone in the world didn't know about Nike before the Olympics and World Cups, they would

Also, Nike and Apple have a collaboration and it worked out great for both parties. Nike is the
leader in the sports world and Apple is without a doubt the leader in music and overall technology
basically. On May 23, 2006 Apple and Nike announced a partnership bringing the worlds of sports

The Discipline Of Environmental History
Found within various articles and books, the discipline of environmental history permeates the study
of nature and humans. By combining a multitude of studies and methodologies, authors explore the
aspects of the environment and nature along with human interaction to understand how they
commingle, affecting one another. In the following four books and one article, scholars from varying
backgrounds approach environmental history in an assortment of methods in order to prove their
thesis. Their methodologies shape their thought process and lead to the structure of these books.
Further investigation into this process reveals the authors' intentions, enabling readers to understand
how methodology fuels the writing process, creating an argument, and producing valuable work.
A strong cooperation lies at the heart of Lisa M. Brady's article entitled, Has Environmental History
Lost Its Way? and sets the tone for many of the following books. She reveals that in order to study
environmental history training in the field is not a requirement.

Hope Essay

Theme of Hope Hope in the face of adversity, hope in spite of the depression and mere survival they
must endure, hope in the face of death and fear. One of the major themes that Cormac McCarthy
emphasizes in The Road is hope: hope for a better world, hope that there are still good people out
there. McCarthy uses the son as a symbol of hope throughout the novel to engage and grasp the
attention of his readers. Hope is what progresses the novel, therefore without hope there is nothing.
The sons character is a symbol of hope to the father throughout the novel. In the father's perspective
the son is almost described as holy, "if he is not the word of god. god never ... Show more content

McCarthy utilizes food as a sign of hope. Throughout the novel the father and son are constantly
fighting the struggle of running low on food. When they find the bunker of food the text is full of
short sentences "Canned hams.", "Corned beef" which emphasizes the father's joy and almost
disbelief of how hopeful the future will be with the abundance of good. The way the father also
repeatedly says "oh my god," when throughout the book he maintains a fairly non–religious view,
shows how it finding this food gives the father hope. Other than the boy the father has hope in very
few things. But one thing which is shown throughout The Road is the father's sense of morals. The
father always reassures the boy and himself that they are the good guys which gives them the hope
to keep persevere because they are, to the father, keeping goodness in the world alive, "carrying the
flame." Cormac McCarthy presents the cannibals as a lost hope in The Road. They are almost only
referred to as the "bad guys" and are described as if they are animals with no hope other than to
survive. Choe 3 In the father's dream an animalistic creature is scared off by the man and the boy,
symbolizing how humanity after the end of the world is something to be afraid of. Also in this
dream the father and the son are holding a light, "Their light playing over the wet flowstone walls,"

Essay on Desperate Times in Cormac McCarthy's "The Road"
A father and a son survives a cataclysmic event; the destruction of the world. They become
homeless scavengers, hunting for food, looking for shelter, and following the one and only road to
the coast where there might be a sign of hope. Cormac McCarthy tells us a post–apocalyptic epic.
This breathtaking novel is a love story of a father and a son, which also depicts the human nature
and how people can react in desperate times.
The world is covered in ash. Even the sea turned grey. It's a dull, freezing, bleak, ashen–skied
wasteland in which human beings are trying to survive. Destroyed cities and devastated countryside
that is totally burned out is virtually uninhabited. The cause of this devastation is never explained.

With a cart loaded with food and blankets, they follow the road that leads to the coast, believing that
there might be some kind of hope. They keep going despite the sicknesses and injuries and
starvation. They are always careful and suspicious, always carrying the gun, always looking for
food, weapons and clothing, they spend the nights in the woods where they will not be seen or a
surviving house or any place that can keep them alive. The father is a loving figure who sacrifices
himself to save the boy, believing it is his duty to keep the boy alive. The father's suspicions extend
to his dreams where he meets his dead wife. The boy also has bad dreams, sometimes telling what it
was about, sometimes not, maybe too embarrassed or insecure. Even though the author doesn't tell
the boy's age, we can assume the boy is around ten years old through how he thinks and talks. He is
quite mature, facing the reality. He sometimes is too ready to trust, empathize and help others
revealing he is a kind boy with a warm loving heart. Although he sometimes cries, gets scared easily
and acts a little bit childishly, he can be unusually mature, understanding other people's mind,
sympathizing with them and understanding what is happening and what needs to be done.
Sometimes he even says or asks questions that normal children wouldn't usually ask, talking about
death, god and other thought provoking questions.

The Civil Rights Achievements Of The Famous African...
This autobiographical analysis will define the civil rights achievements of the famous African
American actor, Canada Lee. Lee's background as a jockey, boxer, and a musician would set the
stage for a major acting career in theater and in Hollywood. More importantly, Lee would use his
fame as an actor to promote racial equality through the support of Hollywood magnates, such as
Orson Wells, and through the theatrical/literary guidance of Langston Hughes. Lee would be
become known for his role in Lifeboat (1944) by Alfred Hitchcock, but he would also get other roles

The cast wore ballroom finery and the witches' magic was turned into voodoo (Mordden 236). This
major breakthrough for lee was a crucial moment in his acting career, since he was catapulted into
fame through the support of Welles. More so Langston Hughes began to take notice of Lee's
burgeoning success, which eventually inspired Hughes to write to versions of his novels into
theatrical dramas. During this time, Lee and Hughes were denied financial support for the two plays,
yet Lee eventually went onto great stage success by performing in Richard Wright's theatrical drama
of native Son (1941). More so, Welles was, once again, the primary support for producing Native
Son, which provided a an even greater public platform for Lee's civil rights activism in the 1940s.
Lee's theatrical success would not only garner him critical acclaim as an actor, but he would also use
this fame to promote racial equality and justice for African–Americans. During WWII, Lee would
speak out against racial division in the U.S. military, which segregated black soldiers from white
soldiers (Biondi 10). In this manner, Lee spoke throughout the country about the problem of
segregation, which allowed him to exploit his fame for the cause of African–American civil rights:

Essay about Senator Joseph R. McCarthy
Senator Joseph R. McCarthy Even though he had humble beginnings, Joseph Raymond McCarthy, a
single man, made a profound effect on the entire United States during his career. By following his
life and what shaped McCarthy as an individual, a broader picture is brought into the scope of the
cause of his false accusations. In the year 1908, in the northeast region of Wisconsin on a struggling
farm, a devout Roman Catholic couple brought a their son, Joseph Raymond, into the world. The

office, McCarthy made constant efforts to gain publicity for himself. Even though the town was
composed of a mere 3,000 people, McCarthy had more ambitions than just getting by in a one–horse
town. McCarthy studied his fellow lawyers' strategies in the court room and "kept his office open
evenings to attract clients." (19, The Life and Times of Joe McCarthy) McCarthy was sure to be at
local events and join up with charities. McCarthy wanted attention and wanted to be noticed. In
1936, McCarthy made his first venture into politics in a race for district attorney. He came in second
in this attempt; however, McCarthy ran for judge of the 10th circuit court in 1938. The second time
around, McCarthy threw himself into his campaign with a seemingly endless amount of energy. In a
state–wide effort to boost his public appeal, McCarthy made speeches touting his slogan "Justice is
Truth in Action." McCarthy won the election. However, once McCarthy attained his position, he
totally disregarded his responsibilities. He set a frantic pace that he maintained the whole term,
racing through cases and ignoring traditional procedures. Joseph was known to later use the slogan
"Justice delayed is justice denied" to support his fast pace. (35, The Life and Times of Joe
McCarthy) Finally, the Wisconsin Supreme Court heard about McCarthy

Phil started Nike all because of his interest in athletics. He wanted to improve the design of Tigers

Mccarthyism : America 's History
McCarthyism has a lot to do with America 's history, even still today examples of McCarthyism are
seen in america . Most victims of mccarthyism are hollywood actors and famous people because
they impact american society more than regular people. Famous people such as Helen Keller,
Leonard Bernstein , Burl Ives, Pete Seeger, Artie Shaw, Zero Mostel, Charlie Chaplin, Langston
Hughes, Orson Welles, and Dolores del Rio were blamed for supposedly being part of the
communist party. But that was not all, there was also another 205 average people that were blamed
for being a part of the communist party as well. McCarthy's committee then started investigating the
United States Army. His charges kept affecting more and more powerful people. McCarthyism is the
practice of making accusations of subversion or treason without proper regard for evidence.
McCarthyism was used to make unfair allegations and using unfair investigative techniques in order
to restrict dissent or political criticism. McCarthyism was developed by Joseph McCarthy, the whole
purpose of why he did it was to scare Americans in order to make them not want to be a communist.
McCarthyism led to several people being accused of being part of the communist party all by people
blaming them when they had no hard facts that they were even a part of communism. in the

Biographical Perspective of No Country for Old Men
Upon reading the book, No Country for Old Men by Cormac McCarthy, readers may be shocked to
see the way it is written. Cormac McCarthy's style of writing differentiates from other famous
authors. He does not use correct punctuations such as apostrophes for contraction words and
quotation marks around dialogues or use correct sentence forms. His rhetorical mode makes it
difficult for the readers to perceive it but there is a reason as to why he writes this way. The reason
why his writing style is so different is because of the way his life influences it. Not only does his life
influences his writing style, it also influences what happens in his novels. Everything that Cormac
McCarthy writes in his books have a purpose. In order to understand McCarthy's reason for writing
so differently and the themes behind No Country for Old Men, the readers would also have to
understand the writer's life and the effect of its influences.
The novel is divided into two parts. It is divided by the different point of views. One point of view is
limited omniscient which is written normally and the other point of view is told through the first
person written in italics. This is uncommon in most novels and McCarthy did not divided it into two
different views for no reason. He used italics for the first person point of view to differentiate the
point of views and to portray who the main

To What Extent Did Joseph Mccarthy And His Anti- Communist...
The purpose of this investigation is to examine the question "To what extent did Joseph McCarthy

the society has changed. McCarthyism also affected domestic and foreign policies, but I am going to
focus on American society. I will focus mainly the years around the McCarthy era which is 1950
through 1954. To help examine my topic, I will be using two books. The books are "Defining
moments: McCarthyism and the Communist Threat" and "Joe McCarthy and McCarthyism: The
hate that haunts America" The two sources will be valuable because they give a deep understanding
of what happened during the years 1950 through 1954. This books is one of Omnigraphics
"Defining Moments" books. Kevin Hillstrom, the author, has written many other books, including
books about history. This also shows this source is valuable because Omnigraphics has a lot of other
Defining Moment books that are about history.
The first source, "Defining moments: McCarthyism and the communist Threat," by Kevin Hillstrom,
is a secondary source and was published in 2011. Books Kevin Hillstrom wrote and edited has

A Change Of Control By Toni Morrison

A Change in Control
When an author writes a work, it leaves her control and it's now within the hands of others. Toni
Morrison uses a metaphor depicting the blind woman as a practiced writer and the bird as language.
Although language is work made by the practiced writer, it never will truly belong to the writer and
ultimately is in the hands of others. As a reader of literature, the individual is inherently an
interpreter and the final judge of language, despite what the writer originally intended. Once an
author creates a work, she becomes the old woman in the story. The author will always have the
wisdom and experience from the writing, but become, in a way, blind and powerless ... Show more

"The vitality of language lies in its ability to limn the actual, imagined, and possible lives of its
speakers, readers, writers." (p. 18) It must be something more than text on paper, more than just
words. Morrison quotes Abraham
Lincoln's Gettysburg Address speech saying,"the world will little note nor long remember what we
say here. But it will never forget what they did here." (p. 18) Lincoln's speech was given during the
Civil War, the bloodiest war in American history, mostly over the back then controversial issue of
slavery. Calling for true equality among people, and citing how all men were created equal from the
Declaration of Independence, Lincoln makes a clear stance against slavery. Some people agreed
with Lincoln, interpreting that the message of the speech calls for a positive change within society,
where all humans are treated fairly and humanely. In the other hand, others were horrified by what
the president said and viewed the speech threatening their way of life, main source of income and
most profitable asset. Some people gave life to the speech, viewing it as a vision of a better future,
free of prejudice and racism. They allowed the language to grow into something much bigger than a
speech, taking little note of what exacts words are being said and focusing on the ideal and vision it
provides. However, others took a completely different approach,

Nike : A Brand Of Footwear, Clothing, And Sporting Equipment
Good morning/afternoon Year 9 Geography and Mrs. Fairfax. Today myself and Brooke are going to
be talking to you about the popular brand of footwear, Nike shoes. Nike is a popular active and
footwear brand that is owned by the CEO, Phillip Knight. Founded in 1964, the company has
become extremely popular in creating exclusive footwear, clothing, and sporting equipment. We
chose to research this topic as Nike is very well known brand and we were curious as to what
happens behind the scenes. As Nike footwear is so popular we feel as though we need to understand
and know how the shoes are made, including the worker's conditions, and the sustainability of the
company and materials used.
Nike is known for its slogan, "Just Do It.", and for many years has had a set demographic. This
demographic is for athletes, especially competitive athletes who want to be the best and always on
top of the competition. Many famous athletes wear Nike shoes and often get sponsored by Nike. By
being a consumer, we take notice of these things and this draws us in into buying Nike shoes. For
example, the Brisbane Broncos, the grand final runner–ups of the NRL Premiership this year, are
sponsored by Nike. Not only do the majority of the players wear Nike football boots, but the Nike
logo is also located on the team jerseys. This is just one of the many ways Nike draws in consumers

The Rhetorical Analysis Of Senator Joseph Mccarthy
In February of 1950, Senator Joseph McCarthy made a speech with the purpose of accusing
democratic representative, Alger Hiss, of working with the communist Soviets in order to convince
the American people to support the Republican party. McCarthy convinces his audience by using
syntactical devices, such as anaphoras, rhetorical questions, and parallelism.
His use of anaphoras creates an emphasis on the motive of his sentence. For example, McCarthy
states, "...groups who have been selling this nation out... [are] those who have had all the benefits
that the wealthiest nation on earth has had to offer―the finest homes, the finest college education,
and the finest jobs..." By repeating finest before each aspect of life, McCarthy emphasizes the
wealth that the men he discusses have been born into―creating conflicting images: the perfect
Americans who have had the best lives possible and those same Americans who are sabotaging the
US by encouraging communism. McCarthy repeats this tactic when he states, "here is what he said,
not back in 1928, not before the war, not during the war, but two years after the last war ended." In
this example, McCarthy is using anaphora to emphasize that Stalin had said that a communist
revolution can not be carried out peacefully after the last war, meaning there might be another war.
This is meant to reveal to his audience why Americans should not succumb to the calm indifference
that apparently always follows a war in order to build up to the statement that Alger Hiss's massive
sacrilege of endorsing communism was able to bring out Americans' outrage from a period of
otherwise numbness and apathy.
McCarthy also includes rhetorical question in his speech to make his point―a war against
communism is imminent―seem obvious. He states, "...can there be anyone here tonight who is so
blind as to say that the war is not on?" This makes his audience seem ignorant if they do not agree
with his previous statement that a war against communism is unavoidable, which encourages people
to not outright disagree with his points. McCarthy continues to say, "Can there be anyone who fails
to realize that the communist world has said, 'The time is now,' that this is the time for the
showdown between the

American enemy and American sought to rid the world of it. Because of the extreme paranoia
caused by Communism, conformity became an ideal way to distinguish American Culture from the
rest. Conformity became a part of every American Life to a large extent. It became evident through
the medium of culture, society and politics throughout the era of the 50s.
When WWII ended, Americans were left in the hands of Harry Truman. Known as an ... Show more

Due to fear of being blacklisted, Eisenhower, the proceeding president, was reluctant to confront
McCarthy. The Red Scare of the 1950s was thriving and the presidents waged war against foreign
Communist powers in order not to be accused of being sympathetic towards the opposition. They
conformed to public opinion and shaped politics in America into a Cold War.
The public conformed towards the American Dream. Everyone wanted a home in Levittown, a car, a
television set and a functional nuclear family. To be different from the norm put Americans in
danger of being blacklisted as Communists. Low–interest mortgage insurance provided by the FHA
made it possible for returning GI?s to start their own families. Cars also came at incredibly
affordable prices as well. Suburbia became the center of social conformity and became the ideal for
American culture.
On the social aspect, women returned to the weak and demure image of helpless women. ?Momism?
became the term to describe the ideal household women in the 1950s. As always, men dominated the
suburban household. People once again became religious in fear of being accused otherwise. Female
sexuality became a shocking issue of the 50s. With the moral of Christian culture, premarital sex and
other lewd acts were shunned from society.
The post WWII era lives up to its reputation of conformity through its cultural, social and political
aspects. Communism and McCarthyism became a major

Carolyn Kizer's Bitch: Closing the Doors on the Past Essay
The poem "Bitch" by Carolyn Kizer, published in 1984, is one that truly grasps the reader's
attention, beginning with the title itself. The overall tone of this poem intertwines the feelings of
sadness and anger and also reveals quite a bit about the speaker's past. The speaker is referring to
her inner self as the "bitch" and her hurt condition is clearly present throughout the poem. She uses
words such as "bark, growling, slobbers and whimper" to drive this meaning across to the reader. It
is in the speaker's own representation of her inner self as a "bitch," one that not only "bark[s]
hysterically," but also may "whimper," and even "cringe". The speaker is easily inclined to
remember past memories from the relationship and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In line 7 ("He isn't an enemy now") the speaker is telling herself that she should not be dwelling on
the past because her ex can't hurt her anymore. The "bitch" seems to be doing fine in controlling her
emotions until line 9 when her ex–lover asks her: ""How are the children? They must be growing
up." An immediate change of tone occurs here. There is an internal struggle going on between her
heart and her mind. The speaker's mind is telling her to be polite to her ex, forget the past and move
on. The bitch's heart, on the other hand, is keeping her from moving on and causing her to struggle
with feelings of desire. This is clear, for example, in lines 10–13: "At a kind word from him...
Down, girl! Keep your distance." The speaker knows that if she accidentally gets to close to this ex–
lover by having feelings again, she will only end up getting hurt. Kind words and gestures can often
be deceiving and I have learned that unfortunately charming people are dangerous. I have been hurt
numerous times by such personalities by only looking at their kind side and ignoring other flaws.
The bitch is warning herself to not get caught up in this trap of feelings again.
Quite a bit of information about the past is exposed in (lines 17–21): "... She is basically loyal...
Until he was ready to play." This means that the speaker was always loyal and kind to her lover, but
he was bored with her and still thought that she was not good enough. The

The American Culture Of Strict Conformity Accounts
An American culture of strict conformity accounts for the rise of the phenomenon known as the Red
Scare, as well as its widespread nature and prominent power. The Red Scare was complicated and a
result of many different aspects of American culture. However the American culture in the 1950's
was one of strict conformity. This conformist society, created in the late 1940's was created by many
early discoveries that uncovered Communist members as Soviet spies. There arose a prevalent belief
that anyone who thought differently was unpatriotic. This conformist nature of American society
thus resulted in few organizations fighting for social justice. The Communist party therefore
attracted a wide range of liberals from different aspects of life. Joseph McCarthy himself, along with
many other governmental officials, was able to institute anti–communist laws and practices under
the pretense that an unwavering conformity was the American goal. The conformist nature of
American society in the 1950's created one of the most powerful anti–communist crusades and
allowed for a dominant Red Scare.
McCarthyism rose to power so quickly in the late 1940's and the early 1950's because "the
perception of an internal Communist threat had just enough plausibility to be convincing" .
Americans feared that communists who would "overthrow the government" were a realistic threat .
During World War Two there were many Soviet spies that had infiltrated many aspects of American
covert operations. Alger

Similarities Between The Red Scare And The Crucible

  • 1. Similarities Between The Red Scare And The Crucible "The Crucible" Essay During the 1950s there was a rise in the fear of communism called "The Red Scare". Senator Joseph McCarthy was one of the many people who contributed to people's fear by making a list of people who he said were communists even though there was no proof in most cases. In an article by Alan Brinkley called "The 1950s Part One: McCarthy and The Red Scare", it informs, "McCarthy was only one of many who helped create the great fear. The Red Scare was visible in almost every area of American life" (Brinkley). This quote tell us that in the 1950s even though Senator Joseph McCarthy was a huge contributor to The Red Scare. His list of suspected communists made rumors spread and the people on the list get questioned and even go to jail when in some cases they were innocent. It also says in the article by USHistory.org called "McCarthyism: Witch Hunting and Blacklisting in America", that, "In the 1950s anyone who was considered a communist could be questioned and thrown in jail" (USHistory.org). Which means that his allegations could have easily put people in prison. In the novel by Arthur Miller, "The Crucible", directly correlates with the Red Scare by implementing a society that is in fear of the people around them and people are given consequences from crimes they did not even commit. The play is about witchcraft and is based around what happened during the Salem Witch Trials. The rumors spread from each other made havoc throughout the community. Most of the rumors spread throughout the play are for people to achieve their own goals of protection and/or revenge. One could claim that rumors are the root of all trouble in "The Crucible" in the 16th paragraph of the overture that, "The witch–hunt was a perverse manifestation of the panic which set in among all classes when the balance began to turn toward greater individual freedom. In the novel Abigail Williams, the Putnams, and Elizabeth Proctor contribute to some of the rumors that went around. Abigail Williams makes rumors to protect herself, for revenge, and to try and take Elizabeth Proctor's place. She is mischievous and lies a lot to protect herself. Parris asks Abigail, "Then you were conjuring spirits last night", and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Within this movie, it reveals and demonstrates the governmental issues, in the actions of Senator Joseph McCarthy. It also shows the effects his actions and decisions had on society and the film focuses on would be firstly, the role and power media plays within politics, beliefs, communism, and the government. It also shows the way government often takes advantage of their power and they use that power to control humanistic liberties. Within the actions of senator Joseph McCarthy, it is tremendously obvious that McCarthy's indifference and disregards for civilian's civil rights and treats ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Due to this specific part of freedom, people were not supposed to be treated any differently by the government for their political belief, but senator Joseph McCarthy did not respect the individual liberty which was given to each person. McCarthy decided that since he had more power being senator of Wisconsin, it meant he had the power to take away the liberty of a man and divert a man's beliefs by disrespecting and treating them differently due to their political stance. One of the examples of Senator McCarthy taking advantage of his governmental power over communist citizens would be, the act which Joseph McCarthy took against Milo Radanovich. Milo Radulovich was a man who was a lieutenant within the United States air force. Milo was a man with a communist stance and belief, but Senator McCarthy discharged Milo from the air force. The senator used the excuse stating that because of Milo being a communist within the United States Air Force, Milo was a security risk to the government and could no longer serve in the Air Force. Joseph McCarthy stated that Milo was a security threat to the government, but McCarthy did not have any form of viable proof to show to support his accusation. This accusation and action show that McCarthy was taking advantage of the power he held within the government and using it to disrespect a man and discharge him from his career. The Senator did all of this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Hollywood Ten was a group of writers, directors, and other artists who bravely refused to answer questions in front of the House of Un–American Activities and were therefore sentenced to jail time and banned from working in Hollywood. I find it interesting that so many people were swayed by what they were being told by the government. I have the impression that American are very gullible and naïve. There had to be more to what they were doing to convince Americans that Hollywood was friendly with Communists and poisoning them with their movies. When I think of Americans today, many of them raise an eyebrow to what the government is telling them. They will also often times do the exact opposite of what the government is asking them to do. When Mike Bloomberg suggested making it illegal for restaurants to sell extra large sodas, many people that I know went crazy and would deliberately get extra large sodas. These people didn't necessarily like soda or need one of that size and most definitely knew that it was not good for them; however they didn't like the fact that someone from the government was telling them what they could and could not drink. These people felt that their rights were being violated. This is how I view most Americans today, they are stubborn and are very protective of their rights. Which is why I find it hard to believe that people actually bought into the idea that Hollywood was poisoning them with Communist ideas and were in cahoots with Russia? Each year a motorcycle hill climbing competition is held in New Plymouth, Idaho called the Big Nasty Hill Climb. On September 19, 2009 my sister's best friend Lacy Fine set out for a day of fun with her cousin Brittani and her cousin's boyfriend Carlos to watch the hyped up event. There was success in Meridian, Sandpoint, and Twin Falls in passing ordinances through their city councils that ban texting while driving, with fines for violators. After three years of failed attempts, Idaho officially banned texting while driving on April 5, 2012 with Governor Butch Otter signing house bill 1274a (Russell 1). On July 1st when the law goes into effect, Idahoans will be held accountable by an infraction. An article found on EBSCO, written by John Callegari for Long Island Business News, unveiled the multitude of legislative action that has been taken by the nation as a whole. • 9. No Country For Old Men Cormac McCarthy's No Country for Old Men has created controversial views on the significance of this novel. This piece involves a drug deal gone wrong when Llewelyn Moss, a veteran, happens to stumble upon three dead bodies, heroine, and a briefcase full of 2 million dollars. Told in different perspectives, the story continues with Moss on the run from a psychopathic killer Anton Chigurh in search of the money while also being tracked down by Sheriff Bell. Critics like James Wood from The New Yorker see this novel as "an unimportant, stripped–down thriller" solely based on the novel's outer surface . On the other hand, William Cobb from the Houston Chronicle refers to McCarthy as the greatest living writer and that this novel "... has conjured up a heated story that brands the reader 's mind...and this is a novel that must be read and remembered"(Cooper 2). The literary merit of the novel becomes noticeable when looking beyond the thriller perspective. McCarthy's literary merit in the novel is discrete, which is why it just appears to be a western thriller that many believe has no greater purpose other than an entertaining story. No Country for Old Men is a neo western thriller based on its writing style that divides the story into different perspectives containing elements such as fragmented sentences and untypical dialogue. The novel remains within the context of a 1980's Texas plot which influences the diction so it can reflect a western atmosphere. Although it contains ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Post Apocalyptic Literature : The End Of The World While post–apocalyptic literature isn't a new concept, the popularity of post–apocalyptic seems to be steadily growing. People find stories about the end of the world a thrilling but probable plot to easily connect to and become sucked into the story line. Even though the plots of post–apocalyptic stories differ in suggesting how the world may end, post–apocalyptic literature shares common elements from one story to the next. As one may guess, post–apocalyptic literature carriers a looming sense of death caused by natural disasters, disease, and even the actions of humans, but post–apocalyptic literature also contains characters who beat the odds in order to survive by ultimately rejecting their morals. By examining the context of several post–apocalyptic stories, these common threads emerge. One element that seems apparent in almost every post–apocalyptic novel is the constant fear of unavoidable death. The Road takes the classical form of a journey between the man and the boy. From the beginning of the story, the man and the boy are on a journey south. They aren't traveling to any specific destination, but are mainly hoping for warmth in the south. However, as the story progresses, the reader realizes the boy and the man are actually trying to escape the constant fear of death by following the road. This becomes apparent when the man and the boy reach the destination of the sea, but are greatly dissatisfied. Throughout the man and the boy's journey, death seems ... McCarthyism spawned for the country's new found terror of Communism known as the red scare. McCarthyism was an extreme version of the red scare, a scare whose ends did not justify the means. The Red Scare happened twice in the history of this great country. When the communist took over Russia in 1919, the American people were unnerved. They were afraid of a communist take over in the states. When the First World War ended in 1918, there was still ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 127) Fear is the most primal instinct. It causes people to do and act in certain ways in which they are not accustomed. It can turn brother against brother, neighbor against neighbor, politician against politician, and country against country. Fear instigates panic. It was that panic that prompted the Palmer Raids. The Palmer Raids were started by A. Mitchel Palmer. He felt that in order to keep the American values in tact communism had to be out of the picture. Palmer believed that communism was "eating its way into the American workman". He thought it was the root of all evils in his society. Palmer felt that communism was "seeking to replace marriage vows with libertine laws, burning up the foundations of society". In December of 1919, in their most famous act, Palmer's agents seized 249 resident aliens. Those seized were placed on board a ship, the Buford, bound for the Soviet Union. Deportees included Emma Goldman the feminist, anarchist and writer who later recalled the deportation in her autobiography. Another reason for the Red Scare was the strike held by mine workers. They were thought to be making threatening moves against the Capitalist system through subversive Socialist organizations. These strikes were part of a series of events taking place in 1919. • 15. Television And Its Impact On The World War II In 1926 John Logie Baird transmitted his first image with his new mechanical television. As the 4"x2" image of his business partner illuminated his face, Baird was completely unaware of the influence this new medium would have on the opinions and attitudes of the people of the world. Television represented a new opportunity to bring not only audio like radio but to place an image in every home. Along with the work of many other inventors television was soon to become a viable medium of entertainment and news but it did face many setbacks. At first television was a novelty, completely overshadowed by the established medium of radio. Before World War II very few homes contained a television and broadcasters mostly aired 15 minute segments and were limited in technology. Then on September 1, 1939 Hitler and Germany invaded Poland and the world plunged into World War II. The FCC issued a ban on the construction of television equipment causing the growth of television to stagnate. At the end of the war economic prosperity and a rising middle class opened the door for a new rise in the purchase of goods. One such good was the television. In 1947 only a few thousand homes owned a television. By 1950 six million homes contained a television, and in 1960 around 60 million homes contained a television. During this period a new war was being waged: the Cold War. In this battle between United States and the Soviet Union ideals propaganda was the main way to grow support for their cause ... • 17. Comparing McCarthyism and The Crucible by Arthur Miller Essay Authors used their literary work to get a point across to the public in the story The Crucible; Arthur Miller used events and characters to show the similarities to McCarthyism which was prevalent in the 1950s. McCarthyism was associated with the period in the United Sates also known as the Second Red Scare. McCarthyism is very similar in the way that Joe McCarthy accused Americans of being communist and in The Crucible people were being accused of being witches. It is known that Arthur Miller wrote this story as a reaction to a tragic time in our history. In both situations people were accused and were found guilty with not much proof. You would think that the judges would dismiss a case when there wasn't much proof. In The Crucible ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... People lost their jobs and careers went bad and even imprisonment occurred. McCarthy held hearings called the Hollywood Blacklist, which had to do with The House Committee on Un– American Activities and anti– communist activities with the FBI. McCarthyism had great effects on different levels of society, involving conflict and many arguments. This relates to The Crucible in the sense that the way people were acting changed dramatically, different and weird because they knew or thought that witches were around. It destroyed people's relationships, caused chaos in church and separation between people. People supported Abigail and Rev.Parris in different types of ways. For example when Abigail would say something and even when it was not true the girls would all follow her moves and lie for her. McCarthyism was supported by many different groups, including a lot of anti– communist organizations, there was no solid number for the victims of McCarthyism, and people who were imprisoned were around the hundreds and ten to twelve thousand lost their jobs. In The Crucible some were hung and many were being imprisoned nonstop and everyone was being called a witch, even with no proof. • 19. Southern Gothic Literature In William Faulkner's A Rose... Benjamin Huckaba Calder 7th grade Language Arts (18 week) 18 January 2017 Sad Southern Literature Southern Gothic Literature is exactly what it implies, works written in the south that are depressing, they are of isolation, violence, decline, bias, and brutality. These works use mental images and show a large amount of symbolism. This classification immediately gives any avid reader a mental author list. If naming an author were a quick answer game show quiz, William Faulkner would gain the number one position. Flannery O'Connor, for myself, is not a name that comes to mind quickly but would have caused a gasp when named. Knowing a little more about a few of the writers helps create the list, for example, Rowan Oak sits hidden behind trees and is approached by a parallel line of trees staying in the darkness of shade with the servants' quarters close behind. Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily" could have taken place in any small Delta town and any time, even today. "A Rose for Emily" is the sad tale of a typical southern woman who did not take the typical southern woman path. With the death of her father she did not follow the path of planning a funeral or telling family. The town was at a loss to find a way to handle this death. "Just as they were about to resort to law and force, she broke down, and they buried her father quickly." This event alone characterizes the story with the isolation, the grotesque, and decay of her morals. Faulkner is just getting started with Emily but has given us the symbolism with society looking in on the aging home, unpaid taxes, and death. Next, we have the addition of Homer Barron, who has come to town temporarily for work. She is smiting for this tall dark handsome northerner. Faulkner himself does not hide another small hint about Homer not liking women. But things appear to be as though marriage is a possibility between the two and then that appears to be another blow that further isolates Emily. Eccentric Emily then ages with her black hair growing grayer and community curiosity growing over the decay foul smelling home. Days after her passing when members of the community enter the home we discover that Emily may have in fact been more southern lady saving ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In what ways has he used language to create the mood of the story and how has he represented the relationship between the man and his son? Cormac McCarthy is a well–known fictional author, especially well–known for his dystopian novels and his ability to lure readers into his books through his language and his depth of writing. His famous novel "The Road" entices readers in through his well–constructed post–apocalyptic dystopian genre. McCarthy cleverly uses language techniques such as third person and indirect free speech. This depressing state makes the reader understand the world of darkness they live in, indicating no light or happiness lives there. The reader also understands that something horrible must have happened to the world they live in. Darkness is commonly associated with death which can occur from destruction through fire, civilisation collapsing and destruction of those by other humans. This particular darkness in the reader's opinion can be associated with post–apocalyptic events. The theme of dystopian is defined in the novel through the unpleasant new world that our future is considered to be bound to. Other techniques that have been used in McCarthy's novel include descriptive language. Descriptive language has been included in the text to create a clearer image of the surrounding settings of the novel. "No sound but the wind in the bare and blackened trees." This indicates the new world the novel is set in has been under some destruction. This destruction may have been caused possibly by a nuclear war or some horrific event. McCarthy has successively been able to use the language feature throughout his novel, in particular synonyms and descriptive language, to engage the reader and convince them that the genre of the novel is post–apocalyptic dystopia. • 23. Analysis Of Cormac Mccarthy 's ' The Road ' How Effectively Does McCarthy Create a Sense of What a Post–Apocalyptic World Would be Like? Cormac McCarthy creates a sense of what a post–apocalyptic society in the novel 'The Road'. He does this by including dreams, description of the physical landscape and human behaviour. This helps create a sense of a post–apocalyptic world because it gives us insight into what it looks like and how the people think. McCarthy uses dreams as a recurring theme throughout the text in order to create his post– apocalyptic world. The novel opens with a dream, in which the author creates a monster. The author uses dreams to create a contrast between a perfect dream world and the cold, dark terrifying world that the characters live in now. 'Its bowels, its beating heart. The brain that pulsed in a dull glass bell'. This could be the author creating a metaphor for the horror that the characters are about to face throughout the book. Towards the middle of the book the man says that 'The right dreams for a man in peril were dreams of peril and all else was the call of languor and death. He dreamt of walking in a flowering wood where birds flew before them... but he was learning how to wake himself from such siren worlds... with the uncanny taste of a peach from some phantom orchard fading in his mouth...' • 25. Communism : The Red Scare And Was Fed By Joseph Mccarthy During the late 1940s and the early 1950s, the thought of communism instilled fear within many Americans because it was portrayed in such a way that confined diversity and corroded political culture. This fear of communism was nicknamed the "Red Scare" and was fed by Joseph McCarthy's accusations of hidden communist in the country. The Manchurian Candidate was a black–and–white American film released in 1962 that depicted the Cold War and the effects that paranoia had on the nation. It was released at the peak of the Cuban Missile Crisis and the spread of communism. This film was about Raymond Shaw, the son of a right–wing political family, who was brainwashed to act as an assassin for his mother in a communist conspiracy theory. Major Bennet (Ben) Marco was another main character that played an important role in discovering the truth of Shaw's brainwashing. Raymond Shaw faced the conflict of acting upon his free will while still being subconsciously manipulated by someone else. Throughout the film, Shaw was shown committing actions that he does not recall whatsoever later due to his programming which was triggered by the Queen of Diamonds playing card. Through the use of film techniques, The Manchurian Candidate creates a scenario which resembles the manifestation of America's "Red Scare" paranoia in that the film portrays Raymond Shaw as an individual who lacks human agency due to his brainwashing because of a communist conspiracy. There are numerous similarities and differences between both, yet one thing is prominent: they both incite hysteria. The Crucible by Arthur Miller is an allegorical play mirroring 1950's America during the Red Scare. "McCarthyism" is the act of accusing someone of an act of treason without substantial evidence. It relies on the uncertainty and the fear of the unknown among people, which in turn, incites hysteria. Joseph McCarthy accused many people of being communists without much evidence or reason. The accusations in The Crucible also are proposed without evidence and cause much hysteria among the town. Since The Crucible was written as an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the book, John Proctor says, "I speak my own sins, I cannot judge another." (Act IV pg. 141). In this quote, John Proctor refuses to condemn others as witches. He states that he can only speak for himself, and cannot judge another. Just like in The Crucible, people (including Miller) were accused of being communists, without any substantial evidence. Many of the accused confessed others as being communists, yet there were a few who refused to give out other names. In both the Red Scare and The Crucible, those who refused to give names of others' faced punishment. This is an obvious illustration of the similarities in both The Crucible and the during the Red Scare in Miller's life. In both The Crucible and McCarthyism, people are accused of being either witches or communists. The accused are placed in such a dire situation where they are either forced to lie to save themselves, or to remain honest, at the risk of their social or physical lives. In The Crucible, John Proctor is accused of practicing witchcraft, and when asked if he is a witch, he responds,"Why it is a lie, it is a lie; how may I damn myself? I cannot, I cannot." At least that is what Paul Bowles and Cormac McCarthy seem to be saying in the writing of their respective books, The Sheltering Sky and Blood Meridian. Both authors place their characters in difficult locations, dealing with difficult people and expect them to emerge changed, for better or for worse. In The Sheltering Sky, Bowles takes his American trio and places them in the desert lands of the African continent where the wide, dry impossibly desolate terrain takes its toll on their minds and bodies. • 31. The Issue Of Paid Parental Leave INTRODUCTION Is America falling behind the rest of the world in terms of the services it provides? As a proud citizen of this great nation I, unfortunately, have to say "yes." Our once outstanding country has been falling behind in a number of areas including technology, education, economics, and yes, even in family care! America is now one of only three industrialized countries that hasn't set up a nationwide policy for paid parental leave. With this knowledge I desired to know more, particularly if we as a nation are not doing much to rectify the situation. Then, to learn if any states were doing something about this issue which effects so many people in the workforce. I wanted to see exactly how far behind, compared to the rest world, we are in the issue of paid parental leave. The Pew Research Center conducted a study of government supported leave in 38 OECD countries, and found that the US had the lowest figures with zero weeks of paid leave. Though we did fare better when it came to the number of weeks provided for protected leave with 12 weeks. We were still far worse than most other OECD countries (see Figure 1 at right). Knowing that we were rated worse I wanted to know what people are saying that we can and should be doing to change this situation? In the hospital, McMurphy represented the rebel, the opposer to the Combine (McCarthyism), the one who wanted to break free of society's conformity. Setting is also important, as it refers to the period this book was set in, the 1950's. Here, the Combine and Nurse Ratched act like the McCarthy "representatives", where the patients are seen as members of the public, having their every word and movement under close scrutiny. After an unexplained, catastrophic event takes place, the world is left in ruins. Very few people are still surviving; however, the ways in which these people attempt to survive are very different. The Road highlights the varying extremes that people will go to in order to keep their lives. Throughout the novel, the characters go to varying extremes to survive. Some characters aim to survive while still keeping their morals intact while others abandon all human decency and do absolutely anything that is required for their survival. The father and the son are the characters who survive while not doing anything that they feel will diminish or jeopardize their goodness. "Twentieth–century U.S. history saw two major episodes of repression and violence against communists and leftist radicals," that occurred approximately three decades apart. During the early part of the 1920s, America entered its first period of extreme anti–communist sentiment, the First Red Scare. After the successful Bolshevik Revolution in Russia in 1917, American citizens began to fear the threat of communist influence at home. At the end of WWI, American workers unhappy with wages and spiralling inflation, launched widespread sometimes violent strikes with the support of growing labor unions. Some of these unions called for government takeover of private industries. For instance, railroad workers called for the national government to take permanent control of the railroad system. The growing waves strikes signalled a period of extreme civil unrest; American citizens became frightened that they would face a revolution similar to the one that had just taken place in Russia. In response, Attorney General A. Mitchell Palmer, in an effort to gain the attention of American voters to support his presidential aspirations, launched a nationwide crusade against anyone he identified as having leftist views. One of the major themes that Cormac McCarthy emphasizes in The Road is hope: hope for a better world, hope that there are still good people out there. McCarthy uses the son as a symbol of hope throughout the novel to engage and grasp the attention of his readers. Hope is what progresses the novel, therefore without hope there is nothing. When they find the bunker of food the text is full of short sentences "Canned hams.", "Corned beef" which emphasizes the father's joy and almost disbelief of how hopeful the future will be with the abundance of good. The way the father also repeatedly says "oh my god," when throughout the book he maintains a fairly non–religious view, shows how it finding this food gives the father hope. Other than the boy the father has hope in very few things. But one thing which is shown throughout The Road is the father's sense of morals. The father always reassures the boy and himself that they are the good guys which gives them the hope to keep persevere because they are, to the father, keeping goodness in the world alive, "carrying the flame." Cormac McCarthy presents the cannibals as a lost hope in The Road. They are almost only referred to as the "bad guys" and are described as if they are animals with no hope other than to survive. During this time, Lee and Hughes were denied financial support for the two plays, yet Lee eventually went onto great stage success by performing in Richard Wright's theatrical drama of native Son (1941). More so, Welles was, once again, the primary support for producing Native Son, which provided a an even greater public platform for Lee's civil rights activism in the 1940s. McCarthy Even though he had humble beginnings, Joseph Raymond McCarthy, a single man, made a profound effect on the entire United States during his career. By following his life and what shaped McCarthy as an individual, a broader picture is brought into the scope of the cause of his false accusations. In the year 1908, in the northeast region of Wisconsin on a struggling farm, a devout Roman Catholic couple brought a their son, Joseph Raymond, into the world. The McCarthy's, an Irish–American family, were hard working and industrious on their farm in a rural area of Wisconsin. Joseph attended a one–room schoolhouse as a boy. Even though the town was composed of a mere 3,000 people, McCarthy had more ambitions than just getting by in a one–horse town. McCarthy studied his fellow lawyers' strategies in the court room and "kept his office open evenings to attract clients." (19, The Life and Times of Joe McCarthy) McCarthy was sure to be at local events and join up with charities. McCarthy wanted attention and wanted to be noticed. In 1936, McCarthy made his first venture into politics in a race for district attorney. He came in second in this attempt; however, McCarthy ran for judge of the 10th circuit court in 1938. The second time around, McCarthy threw himself into his campaign with a seemingly endless amount of energy. In a state–wide effort to boost his public appeal, McCarthy made speeches touting his slogan "Justice is Truth in Action." McCarthy won the election. However, once McCarthy attained his position, he totally disregarded his responsibilities. He set a frantic pace that he maintained the whole term, racing through cases and ignoring traditional procedures. Joseph was known to later use the slogan "Justice delayed is justice denied" to support his fast pace. He wasn't the best student at Stanford, he spent most of his time in athletics. He first began selling sneakers in partnership with Asics. In 1971, Phil created the name Nike (name of a Greek goddess, which symbolizes victory.) This was just the beginning of Phil Knight's success. Phil started Nike all because of his interest in athletics. He wanted to improve the design of Tigers (Ribbon Sports, first shoes) and do more than sell shoes of other brands. Phil's interest in athletics made him very successful. His small business of selling shoes in college turned into Nike one of the most popular sports brands today. In 1993 Phil Knight was voted "the most powerful person in sports", what amazes me is that he isn't even an athlete, or team manager, he is just a very popular icon for sports. It's unbelieveable how an interest as simple as sports made Phil Knight the man he is today. Knight had some skill on starting a small business. He just kept building on his business and kept on improving his products. He outlined a plan for breaking the reputation Adidas had on the running– shoe. Most victims of mccarthyism are hollywood actors and famous people because they impact american society more than regular people. Famous people such as Helen Keller, Leonard Bernstein , Burl Ives, Pete Seeger, Artie Shaw, Zero Mostel, Charlie Chaplin, Langston Hughes, Orson Welles, and Dolores del Rio were blamed for supposedly being part of the communist party. But that was not all, there was also another 205 average people that were blamed for being a part of the communist party as well. McCarthy's committee then started investigating the United States Army. His charges kept affecting more and more powerful people. McCarthyism is the practice of making accusations of subversion or treason without proper regard for evidence. McCarthyism was used to make unfair allegations and using unfair investigative techniques in order to restrict dissent or political criticism. McCarthyism was developed by Joseph McCarthy, the whole purpose of why he did it was to scare Americans in order to make them not want to be a communist. No Country For Old Men By Cormac Mccarthy Hieu Nguyen English Writing 301 Professor Tittle 27 July 2015 Biographical Perspective of No Country for Old Men Upon reading the book, No Country for Old Men by Cormac McCarthy, readers may be shocked to see the way it is written. Cormac McCarthy's style of writing differentiates from other famous authors. He does not use correct punctuations such as apostrophes for contraction words and quotation marks around dialogues or use correct sentence forms. His rhetorical mode makes it difficult for the readers to perceive it but there is a reason as to why he writes this way. The reason why his writing style is so different is because of the way his life influences it. Not only does his life influences his writing style, it also influences what happens in his novels. Everything that Cormac McCarthy writes in his books have a purpose. In order to understand McCarthy's reason for writing so differently and the themes behind No Country for Old Men, the readers would also have to understand the writer's life and the effect of its influences. The novel is divided into two parts. It is divided by the different point of views. One point of view is limited omniscient which is written normally and the other point of view is told through the first person written in italics. This is uncommon in most novels and McCarthy did not divided it into two different views for no reason. He used italics for the first person point of view to differentiate the point of views and to portray who the main ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The purpose of this investigation is to examine the question "To what extent did Joseph McCarthy and his anti– communist tactics have an impact on United States society?" I will cover how things in the society has changed. McCarthyism also affected domestic and foreign policies, but I am going to focus on American society. I will focus mainly the years around the McCarthy era which is 1950 through 1954. To help examine my topic, I will be using two books. The books are "Defining moments: McCarthyism and the Communist Threat" and "Joe McCarthy and McCarthyism: The hate that haunts America" The two sources will be valuable because they give a deep understanding of what happened during the years 1950 through 1954. This books is one of Omnigraphics "Defining Moments" books. Kevin Hillstrom, the author, has written many other books, including books about history. This also shows this source is valuable because Omnigraphics has a lot of other Defining Moment books that are about history. The first source, "Defining moments: McCarthyism and the communist Threat," by Kevin Hillstrom, is a secondary source and was published in 2011. Books Kevin Hillstrom wrote and edited has received awards. He not only wrote books about history, he also covered topics about environmental issues and culture. • 63. A Change Of Control By Toni Morrison Steven Bae Ms. Volinsky AP English 11 22 September 2014 A Change in Control When an author writes a work, it leaves her control and it's now within the hands of others. Toni Morrison uses a metaphor depicting the blind woman as a practiced writer and the bird as language. Although language is work made by the practiced writer, it never will truly belong to the writer and ultimately is in the hands of others. As a reader of literature, the individual is inherently an interpreter and the final judge of language, despite what the writer originally intended. Once an author creates a work, she becomes the old woman in the story. The author will always have the wisdom and experience from the writing, but become, in a way, blind and powerless ... (p. 18) It must be something more than text on paper, more than just words. Morrison quotes Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address speech saying,"the world will little note nor long remember what we say here. But it will never forget what they did here." (p. 18) Lincoln's speech was given during the Civil War, the bloodiest war in American history, mostly over the back then controversial issue of slavery. Calling for true equality among people, and citing how all men were created equal from the Declaration of Independence, Lincoln makes a clear stance against slavery. Some people agreed with Lincoln, interpreting that the message of the speech calls for a positive change within society, where all humans are treated fairly and humanely. In the other hand, others were horrified by what the president said and viewed the speech threatening their way of life, main source of income and most profitable asset. Some people gave life to the speech, viewing it as a vision of a better future, free of prejudice and racism. They allowed the language to grow into something much bigger than a speech, taking little note of what exacts words are being said and focusing on the ideal and vision it provides. Today myself and Brooke are going to be talking to you about the popular brand of footwear, Nike shoes. Nike is a popular active and footwear brand that is owned by the CEO, Phillip Knight. Founded in 1964, the company has become extremely popular in creating exclusive footwear, clothing, and sporting equipment. We chose to research this topic as Nike is very well known brand and we were curious as to what happens behind the scenes. As Nike footwear is so popular we feel as though we need to understand and know how the shoes are made, including the worker's conditions, and the sustainability of the company and materials used. Nike is known for its slogan, "Just Do It.", and for many years has had a set demographic. This demographic is for athletes, especially competitive athletes who want to be the best and always on top of the competition. Many famous athletes wear Nike shoes and often get sponsored by Nike. By being a consumer, we take notice of these things and this draws us in into buying Nike shoes. For example, the Brisbane Broncos, the grand final runner–ups of the NRL Premiership this year, are sponsored by Nike. Not only do the majority of the players wear Nike football boots, but the Nike logo is also located on the team jerseys. • 69. The Rhetorical Analysis Of Senator Joseph Mccarthy In February of 1950, Senator Joseph McCarthy made a speech with the purpose of accusing democratic representative, Alger Hiss, of working with the communist Soviets in order to convince the American people to support the Republican party. McCarthy convinces his audience by using syntactical devices, such as anaphoras, rhetorical questions, and parallelism. His use of anaphoras creates an emphasis on the motive of his sentence. For example, McCarthy states, "...groups who have been selling this nation out... [are] those who have had all the benefits that the wealthiest nation on earth has had to offer―the finest homes, the finest college education, and the finest jobs..." By repeating finest before each aspect of life, McCarthy emphasizes the wealth that the men he discusses have been born into―creating conflicting images: the perfect Americans who have had the best lives possible and those same Americans who are sabotaging the US by encouraging communism. McCarthy repeats this tactic when he states, "here is what he said, not back in 1928, not before the war, not during the war, but two years after the last war ended." In this example, McCarthy is using anaphora to emphasize that Stalin had said that a communist revolution can not be carried out peacefully after the last war, meaning there might be another war. This is meant to reveal to his audience why Americans should not succumb to the calm indifference that apparently always follows a war in order to build up to the statement that Alger Hiss's massive sacrilege of endorsing communism was able to bring out Americans' outrage from a period of otherwise numbness and apathy. McCarthy also includes rhetorical question in his speech to make his point―a war against communism is imminent―seem obvious. He states, "...can there be anyone here tonight who is so blind as to say that the war is not on?" This makes his audience seem ignorant if they do not agree with his previous statement that a war against communism is unavoidable, which encourages people to not outright disagree with his points. McCarthy continues to say, "Can there be anyone who fails to realize that the communist world has said, 'The time is now,' that this is the time for the showdown between the ... Through thinking that the mind is something that can be comprehended humans have created the art of psychology and psychiatry, where the inner machinations of one's mind are turned into nothing more than phrases and terms. Between every person there lies a sense of morality, no matter who. The sense of morality is not the same though, as children we learn to feel pain and suffering as others do, and to put the shoes of others on. Carolyn Kizer's Bitch: Closing the Doors on the Past Essay The poem "Bitch" by Carolyn Kizer, published in 1984, is one that truly grasps the reader's attention, beginning with the title itself. The overall tone of this poem intertwines the feelings of sadness and anger and also reveals quite a bit about the speaker's past. The speaker is referring to her inner self as the "bitch" and her hurt condition is clearly present throughout the poem. She uses words such as "bark, growling, slobbers and whimper" to drive this meaning across to the reader. It is in the speaker's own representation of her inner self as a "bitch," one that not only "bark[s] hysterically," but also may "whimper," and even "cringe". The "bitch" seems to be doing fine in controlling her emotions until line 9 when her ex–lover asks her: ""How are the children? They must be growing up." An immediate change of tone occurs here. There is an internal struggle going on between her heart and her mind. The speaker's mind is telling her to be polite to her ex, forget the past and move on. The bitch's heart, on the other hand, is keeping her from moving on and causing her to struggle with feelings of desire. This is clear, for example, in lines 10–13: "At a kind word from him... Down, girl! Keep your distance." The speaker knows that if she accidentally gets to close to this ex– lover by having feelings again, she will only end up getting hurt. Kind words and gestures can often be deceiving and I have learned that unfortunately charming people are dangerous. I have been hurt numerous times by such personalities by only looking at their kind side and ignoring other flaws. The bitch is warning herself to not get caught up in this trap of feelings again. Quite a bit of information about the past is exposed in (lines 17–21): "... She is basically loyal... Until he was ready to play." This means that the speaker was always loyal and kind to her lover, but he was bored with her and still thought that she was not good enough. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 77. The American Culture Of Strict Conformity Accounts An American culture of strict conformity accounts for the rise of the phenomenon known as the Red Scare, as well as its widespread nature and prominent power. The Red Scare was complicated and a result of many different aspects of American culture. However the American culture in the 1950's was one of strict conformity. This conformist society, created in the late 1940's was created by many early discoveries that uncovered Communist members as Soviet spies. There arose a prevalent belief that anyone who thought differently was unpatriotic. This conformist nature of American society thus resulted in few organizations fighting for social justice. The Communist party therefore attracted a wide range of liberals from different aspects of life. Joseph McCarthy himself, along with many other governmental officials, was able to institute anti–communist laws and practices under the pretense that an unwavering conformity was the American goal. The conformist nature of American society in the 1950's created one of the most powerful anti–communist crusades and allowed for a dominant Red Scare. McCarthyism rose to power so quickly in the late 1940's and the early 1950's because "the perception of an internal Communist threat had just enough plausibility to be convincing" . Americans feared that communists who would "overthrow the government" were a realistic threat .
