The World of Ancient Egypt
Defence Force – the protectors of the borders: The army – ancient Egypt's fighters: In the old
kingdom, there was no permanent army. Untrained men from villagers were called upon in time of
war. Egypt's natural barriers, the desrt for one, ensured that this didn't happen very often. The army
became professional during middle Kingdom and they fought with no armour. The Pharaoh always
led his army into battle, surrounded by a group of soldiers called the 'Braves of the King'. He rode
on a chariot wearing armour and a blue war crown. Army life was tough, with very harsh training
and whippings if you did something wrong. Talented soldiers could greatly improve their social
position by becoming wealthy. The Battle of Kadesh– greatest victory of Pharaoh Ramesses: The
Egyptian army had marched to face the Hittite army. On the way, they caught two strangers. These
strangers claimed that the Hittite army was far away. But in actual fact, they were spies for the
enemy and the Hittite were waiting for them in the city of Kadesh. Then, the Egyptian army caught
2 more spies and Ramesses realized they were spies for the Hittites. The Egyptian's found
themselves surrounded and most of the army fled, leaving only their pharaoh and his shield–bearer
to fight the greatest battle of their lives. It is said that Ramesses prayed to the great god Amun and
gained strength, enough to beat all of the Hittites. This is the story of the Great Battle of Kadesh.

The Ancient Mediterranean World
No culture can be completely isolated; a culture that refuses to learn and share with the other
cultures around it becomes stagnant and may die out completely. The cultures of the ancient
Mediterranean world were certainly far from isolated. The willingness of these cultures to adopt and
adapt from each other is part of what makes them so rich and complex.
Even as most ancient Mediterranean societies were just beginning, Egypt and its culture were
flourishing. As the Chalcolithic Age gave way to the Bronze Age, the Upper and Lower Kingdoms
of Egypt joined together and began expanding. This expansion spread the culture and art of the
Egyptians around the ancient Mediterranean world. Many cultures adopted the common Egyptian
image of a winged sun disk, representative in their culture of the sun god Ra; once adopted into
other cultures, its meaning changed, but its general shape remained the same. Archaic Greek art, as
well, was highly influenced by Egyptian art; many early Greek statues mimic the stiff posture and
striding pose of Egyptian pharaoh illustrations (Purcell; Gilders). The Egyptians helped to shape a
somewhat unified Mediterranean culture.

Stamped and minted coinage is directly taken from Greek culture, and the columns found in many
government buildings can be attributed to Grecian architecture. However, the Greeks did not simply
develop their culture from scratch. They, too, allowed other cultures to influence their own, taking
things such as Egyptian art styles and Phoenician alphabets and making them their own. It is this
culture, developed from the cultures surrounding Greece and later spread through Alexander's
imperial expansion, that would one day become the baseline for much of modern society and

The Gods Of The Ancient World
Some of the Goddesses of the Ancient World
The goddesses named in this chapter occur in the midst of the earliest pagan deities mentioned in
numerous ancient writings; particularly, the ones frequently linked to the land of Canaan. In fact,
several of the goddesses that promoted idolatry and prostitution exist directly in the King James
Version of the Bible, such as Ashtoreth, Diana and Lilith. Although, the word 'prostitute' exists only
once (Lev 19:29), still, prostitution happens to be identified with various words; such as "whore(s),
whoredom(s). harlot(s), pollute or polluted;" (which can mean prostitute) that encounters being
mentioned frequently. The prophets of the Bible warned regarding whoring after other gods and
goddesses and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For due to the goddess, routinely unmarried women, including those from the chief families in the
country, befell being ordered to prostitute themselves in the temple at least once during their
lifetime. Herodotus' describes this ancient practice that exploited women sexually, stating:
Emphatically, due to the goddesses, women and young girls required to have their virginity
callously stolen away–how sick is that? Indeed, the paint brush of this practice appears to be broad
among the fertility goddesses, for this domination became witnessed repeatedly in various lands;
instigating unwanted pregnancy. Generally, the most vulnerable time in a female's life occurs
generally during pregnancy or the rearing of small children; therefore this reality helped evil cripple
women into submission through the centuries. The following occurs as a brief summary of a few of
the main goddesses in the land of Mesopotamia, the ancient Middle East and surrounding areas.
Lilith
Lilith became intertwined with Ishtar and Inanna in Babylonian as sacred prostitutes, and in the Old
Testament her existence occurs subtly. Furthermore, Lilith became a sexual predator towards men
and dwelled in desolate desert places as stated in the Bible. Along with other demons, Lilith occurs
referenced in the Dead Sea Scrolls that contains an undeniable indication of Lilith's reputation by
being grouped with evil. Virtually, early portrayals of various demons identify with Lilith and

Analysis Of The Seven Wonders Of The Ancient World
The original seven wonders of the world list is "The Lighthouse at Alexandria, The Great Pyramid
at Giza, The Colossus of Rhodes, The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, The Temple of Artemis at
Ephesus, The Statue of Zeus at Olympia, The Hanging Gardens of Babylon". (The Seven Wonders
of the Ancient World Silverberg) This list can be both problematic and lacking because the reading
and the website article both show different illustrations on what the seven wonders look like. This
can be problematic because many people may see different images of them and not get the right idea
of what they look like. This can also be lacking because, the information may not be gathered
correctly and give false information on what they look like. Both sources the reading "The Seven
Wonders of the Ancient World" and the online source "Ancient.eu/ The_Seven_Wonders" both say
different things on where they came from. For example the reading says that the list comes before
Christ and a poet Antipater drew up the list and the online source says that the list comes from
Themala "Greek things to be seen" and was created by Philoof Byzantium. The "Seven Wonders of
the Ancient World" is a list that historians have traced back to the second century BCE. However,
when inspected closely, the list appears to be biased because in the printed source says the list
comes from before Christ and a poet Antipater drew up the list. In the online source the list comes

The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World inspired awe and fascination during their time. There are
seven wonders of the ancient world. The list was made by Antipater of Sidon. The list was made
because of many reasons. Size, how it was made or the beauty of it. The only wonder of the ancient
world that is still standing is the Pyramids of Giza which are located in Egypt near Cairo. The
Pyramids were built by slaves and are 481 feet tall.
The Statue of Zeus at Olympia was 43 feet high, made out of gold, ivory, gems and was a wooden
frame. There was also images of animals carved into the side of Zeus's chair. This statue was
designed by artist Libon and carved by the greatest greek sculptor, Phidias. It took 12 years to

Olympics were first started in 776 B.C. and held at a shrine to Zeus located on the western coast of
Greece in a region called Peloponnesus. It sat on the south tip of Europe, near the Mediterranean
Sea. The temple is about 11 miles away from Pyrgos.
Ancient methods of building required various techniques. The statue was built in about 430 B.C.
and around 170 B.C. it was damaged by an earthquake then, repaired. Phidias carved the pieces of
the statue that needed done alone. After being repaired, it was destroyed in a fire in 462 B.C., but
some say the fire was in the fifth century. Later, scientists found elephant tusks and terracotta molds
in Phidias's workshop which, were made to make the statue. No part of the statue is left today, only
pieces that were shipped to a museum in Paris, France.
The Statue of Zeus at Olympia is included as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World
because it was considered to be the most famous artistic work in all of Greece. Also, Zeus was the
king of Greek Gods and every four years at the Olympic games it was there to shrine him. Today,

Inventions Of The Ancient World
Our modern technology dates back thousands and thousands of years ago to the ancient world. If it
wasn't for the civilizations who started this all, we would have very little to no technology, because
they were the creators of our world today. The simplest things they created to help them survive and
make everyday life easier has improved over the years and have also made it simpler for us to
survive as well. Their cultures started a movement for technology and some of the things they
invented are incredibly creative and genius. To look back and see the inventions they made with
their own bare hands is amazing, considering they had no machines to help them build things and
basically had no base to piggy back off of. Three cultures that truly shaped the way we live today
were the ancient Egyptians, the ancient Greeks, and the Romans. The ancient Egyptians can date
back to 30 BCE when Cleopatra was reigning for her short period of time, before she died in 31
BCE ("Ancient Egyptian Civilization"). Ancient inventions came after that and continued to
improve. The most famous and profound Egyptian invention are the pyramids, which was first being
built in 2667 BC and was finished in 2648 BC for King Zocer (Millmore, 2017). More pyramids
were built afterwards like the famous pyramids of Giza, which were also built for the kings who
reigned. Another famous Egyptian invention that shaped our language were the hieroglyphics and
pictograms, which are said to be created around 3300

The Role Of Women In The Ancient World
As the author, Rachel Wolchin, once said, "Behind every great man stands no woman. There is no
greater man than the man that can acknowledge the woman standing right next to him." Over the
course of history, there has been a progressional change in how society has treated women.
Although many times, we notice either an individual or a group of women that have looked past
social boundaries and redefined the role of women, there is very little recognition of the
accomplishments of these women, and history often encompasses the efforts of men. This is
illustrated especially in the studies of ancient civilizations. We notice throughout many eras that the
role of women is pertaining to the household or bearing children, and that men were the head ...

associate with success in a way that has left a lasting change in the course of history, such as
charisma, confidence, and intellect. They were born to be leaders, and their instinct to grow into one
will come naturally in an environment where one is needed. The theory was called the "Great Man"
theory because it was influenced by how society would associate success and strong leadership with
traits that can be stereotypically called 'masculine'. Under the belief that women do not possess
these characteristics, society would dislike the idea of women in leadership. Yet, we still saw many
women in a leadership position such as women in ancient civilizations and later in more modern

Ancient Greece And Rome During The World
Ancient Greece and Rome are some of the most famous time periods in the world, but what
influenced them? Ancient Greece lasted roughly from 1000–400 B.C.E while ancient Rome was
from 753 B.C.–476 A.D (Cole and Symes, 75). The Greek alphabet was influenced by Phoenician
sea traders and their art was mostly influenced by Egypt and western Asia. On the other hand, Rome
was influenced by the Greek and derived the alphabet, many of their religious beliefs, and much of
their art (Cole and Symes, 147). Ancient Greece and Rome were influenced by the Ancient Near
East sedentary societies through art, religion, and architecture. Greece was the first society that was
male dominated . Also, sexuality was a part of everyday life for Greeks. If home owners did not
offer hospitality to certain groups of people, then they would be sentenced to death (Garcia Lecture
2/3/16). The Greeks had extremely strict rules with education and training. Greece is also known
well for their world famous philosophers such as Aristotle, Socrates, Plato, and much more. Ancient
Rome started as a small town in central Italy, but developed into a vast empire, including continental
Europe, Britain, much of western Asia, northern Africa and the Mediterranean islands. Although
Rome was influenced by many aspects of Greek life, they downplayed their influence in mythology,
preferring to emphasize their alleged descent from the Trojans (Cole and Symes, 147). The social

The Seven Wonders Of The Ancient World
Seven Wonders of the Ancient and New World
The world is full of beautiful places but there are some places that are considered from the wonders
of the world. These places and buildings were named as the seven wonders of the ancient world.
Herodotus, A Greek historian, wrote about these wonders thousands of years ago. At this time, he
thought that these buildings were the greatest structures in the world and he made a list of these
places and called it the Seven Wonders of The Ancient World. A wonder is a structure created by
something strange and amazing; when we see it, we say that it is rare and unexpected. Although
there are several wonders in the world, there are seven that are recognized as being ancient.
Tom Jackson, in his book The Seven Wonders of The World, has written that the great pyramids of
Egypt; they are the most ancient and historical place in Egypt, were built in Giza. These pyramids
are very old, they have been there for over four thousand years. It is believed that the shape of these
pyramids symbolized the prehistoric knoll from which they believed life emerged. The big sizes of
these pyramids symbolize the power and the greatness of their country back in that days.
Another structure that considered also one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World is the
Hanging Gardens of Babylon. They are also known as the hanging gardens of Semiramis.
Nebuchadnezzar II IN 200 BCE, wanted to please his beloved wife Semiramis so he built these
gardens. The

The Seven Wonders Of The Ancient World
The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World are the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Hanging Gardens of
Babylon, the Statue of Zeus in Olympia, the Temple of Artemis in Ephesus, the Mausoleum at
Halicarnassus, the Colossus of Rhodes, and the Lighthouse of Alexandria. These are seven
absolutely magnificent structures, built in the ancient world. The Seven Wonders of the Ancient
World were first called themata, which translates in Greek to 'things to be seen'. The Great Pyramid
of Giza, located in Egypt, was built between 2583 and 2561 BCE for the Egyptian pharaoh Khufu,
also Known as Cheops in Greek culture. The Great Pyramid of Giza was the tallest man–made
structure for nearly 4,000 years. The excavation of the interior of the pyramid was initiated in the
late 18th century and early 19th century. The structure itself, with its imposing height and perfect
symmetry, is what impressed most ancient visitors. The Great Pyramid is also the only one of the
Seven Wonders which still stand in fabulous condition to this day. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon
are also one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The Hanging Gardens was built by the
Babylonian ruler, Nebuchadnezzar, as a gift to his wife. Diodorus Sicilus, an ancient writer, had
wrote that Nebuchadnezzar's wife, Amtis of Media, had missed the beautiful landscape and flowers
of her homeland, and to please his wife, Nebuchadnezzar had a temple built. The temple was

Although the St. Petersburg Museum of Fine Arts' collection holds many treasures from a variety of
eras and cultures, three pertained most to this course. Within the "Ancient World" exhibit, a
Cycladic Idol, a Roman copy of Greek artist Praxiteles's statue of Aphrodite, and a Red–figure

who imitated much of Greek culture and art. The St. Petersburg Museum of Fine Arts, or MFA, is
curated both by era and by culture. For example, the "Ancient World" room contains art from a
particular time period and a variety of cultures; however, the "Art of the Americas" room is made up
of art from a specific culture over a large amount of time. All of the works mentioned above were
placed within the "Ancient World" room. The curator chose to place the statue of Aphrodite on a

Ancient Greece's Influence On The Western World
The ancient Greek civilization ranged from 1900– 133 BC. Greek civilization came to an end more
than 2,000 years ago, when Greece became part of the Roman Empire.
However, its impact on the Western world lasts to this day. As the Greeks expanded their empire,
they spread their ideas to other countries, while also borrowing from other cultures. During this
period of time, the Greeks made many significant and long–lasting contributions to our modern
world. Moreover, the influences of the Ancient Greeks are still felt by us today.

Seven Wonders of the Ancient World
Abstract
Various Wonders of the World lists have been compiled over the ages in order to catalogue the most
spectacular natural and man–made constructions. The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World is the
first known list of remarkable man–made creations of classical antiquity, and was based on guide–
books popular among Hellenic sight–seers and only includes works located around the
Mediterranean rim. Later lists include those for the Medieval World, the Modern World, the Natural
World and others. The list that will be discussed today is the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
The historian Herodotus (484 BC–ca. 425 BC), and the scholar Callimachus of Cyrene (ca 305–240
BC) at the Museum of Alexandria, made early lists of "seven wonders" but ... Show more content on

The gardens were destroyed in an earthquake after the 1st century BCE.
The lush Hanging Gardens are extensively documented by Greek historians such as Strabo and
Diodorus Siculus. Through the ages, the location may have been confused with gardens that existed
at Nineveh, whose king at the time was Nimrod, since tablets from there clearly show gardens.
Writings on these tablets describe the possible use of something similar to an Archimedes' screw as
a process of raising the water to the required height. The Greek Historian Diodorus (Antipar) said:
"The Garden was 100 feet long by 100 feet wide and built up in tiers so that it resembled a theater.
Vaults had been constructed under the ascending terraces which carried the entire weight of the
planted garden; the uppermost vault, which was seventy–five feet high, was the highest part of the
garden, which, at this point, was on the same level as the city walls. The roofs of the vaults which
supported the garden were constructed of stone beams some sixteen feet long, and over these were
laid first a layer of reeds set in thick tar, then two courses of baked brick bonded by cement, and
finally a covering of lead to prevent the moisture in the soil penetrating the roof. On top of this roof
enough topsoil was heaped to allow the biggest trees to take root. The earth was leveled off and

Nintu. The poem describes Mami as the creator of "Lullu" which is an allusion to Adam of the Old
Testament. The ancient text also reveals the Mesopotamian belief that people were created from a
mixture of divine blood and clay. Clay is a good analogy to describe people because humans are
brought into the world soft, fragile and ready to be molded and hardened by the world and their
experiences in it, so they can provide the ultimate service to god. Another important note is that clay
is typically found in Israel. A second form of worship in the ancient world was called monotheism
and was widely practiced by Hebrews. The Hebrews and Mesopotamians were geographically
located close to one another. This may be why their creation stories show so many similarities. The
creation story from Genesis: 2:1–24 (p.43) reveals that god created life in seven days. According to
the text, god created man from the "dust of the ground" by breathing life into his nostrils and was to
cultivate and take care of the Garden of Eden. God created a beautiful paradise filled with lush fruits
and exotic animals. Later on, god realized that Adam would need a partner to accompany him. By

Comparing The Seven Wonders Of The Ancient World
The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World fascinate and baffle the modern world. The list is
comprised of the Great Pyramids of Giza, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the Statue of Zeus at
Olympia, the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, the Colossus of
Rhodes, and lastly the Lighthouse of Alexandria (history). Ancient civilizations had developed and
grown without being as connected as countries in today's society are. Thus, cultures and societies
remained unique from the others. Ancient communities such as the Greek are both similar and
different from other ancient civilizations such as the Egyptians in many ways; some similarities are
their interests in geometry and mathematics, having an insular society, and religious beliefs and
some differences are religious structures, art style, and finally government structures. A similarity
between the ancient Egyptians and Greek is the use of what is now known as geometry. It is
currently thought that the Egyptians had introduced the earliest fully–developed base–ten
numeration system, this system was introduced around 2700 BCE, and was based. On people having
ten fingers (story of mathematics). A famous document of the time was the Rhind Papyrus, created
1650 BC, and contained information and exercises to show the "Correct method of reckoning, for
grasping the meaning of things and knowing everything that is, obscurities and all secrets."
(Washington.edu). The Egyptians had also approximated the area of

The Seven Wonders Of The Ancient World
There are Seven Wonders of the Ancient World known today. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon,
The Great Pyramid of Giza, The Temple of Artemis, The Statue of Zeus at Olympia, The
Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, The Colossus of Rhodes, and The Lighthouse of Alexandria. With
years of research on all seven wonders, there are many questions left unanswered today. Most of
these questions include important facts about the status itself. Where were they located? Why were
they created? What happened to them? The most important unanswered question can be asked of all
seven of these wonders, did they even exist? These questions are raised by the curiosity of
architects, scientists, historians, and anyone with a bit of imagination with a love for history. We can
only gather research to get a glimpse into the ancient world and let our imagination take control
until we can gather enough evidence to be positive that yes, these seven wonders of the world did
exist. All seven wonders of the world had a powerful meaning behind them. A temple to worship,
statues dedicated to Gods, and even the burial ground of a great King and Queen. King of Caria
Maussollos and his Queen Artemisia were laid to rest in what is known as The Mausoleum of
Halicarnassus. A tomb that was created by his Queen Artemisia, likely a place for her to go to grieve
the loss of her husband. This mausoleum was built in 353 B.C. around the time of his death. This
beautiful mausoleum was coated with marble filled statues of Greek

Papyrus Scrolls Of The Ancient World
Have you ever wanted to know more about the history of papyrus scrolls of the ancient world? Well,
you have come to the right place. This post will provide you with an overview that will leave you
with a general idea on the different aspects of the scroll from production to uses to importance.
Introduction to the Scroll
A scroll was a roll constructed of material that ranged from papyrus to parchment. However, the
material taken from a papyrus plant predominately composed the scrolls of the ancient world. Since
3000 BC, the plant was native only to Egypt and considered the major distributor to the rest of the
Mediterranean world. On the other hand, when the papyrus plant was no longer cultivated as writing
material, the act caused the extinction ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The quality was measured by fineness, firmness, whiteness, smoothness, and variation in breadth.
The difference in quality of papyrus allowed the variants to be used for different things. The
different grade of papyrus stemmed from the different parts of the plant being used and where the
sheets were manufactured. For example, the heretic grade came from the center of the plant and was
mostly used for religious texts. The amphitheatric grade originated from the name of its manufacture
place. The manufacture place was in Rome ran by Fannius, who was a grammarian. He, in order to
make better quality papyrus, added a third layer, making it finer. The saitic grade of papyrus was
eponymous with the city where the papyrus was manufactured and consisted mainly of scraps,
making it felt like bark. The taenotic papyrus was made from papyrus that was near the outside skin
and was not sold by its quality, but rather by its weight. The emporitic papyrus was useless as
writing material so it was used for envelopes or merchandise wrapping paper by dealers. From
antiquity, around 3000 scrolls survived with texts ranging from treaties to medical knowledge to
classical texts. The text was arranged into columns. A vast majority of the papyri was literary in that
they contained epics, dramas, prose, and history. However, there were also commentaries,
grammatical treatises, and technical knowledge. In addition, many of surviving texts on papyrus are
Greek and Latin literature. During antiquity, the rolls were more associated with the classical elite as
mass readership was uncommon and papyrus could be very expensive, depending on its

Ancient Wonders of the World
The ancient wonders of the world are seven such sights that were constructed around the first and
second century but do not exist in the present day. During the fourth century, the Greeks had
conquered sufficient land in Persia, Egypt and Babylon which gave writers access to travel these
areas freely. The Greek writers would note down any interesting sights that they saw and would
make lists of them, and although today, we see these seven wonders as just one list, in reality, there
were several lists of monuments and sights as a whole on all the lists, but the ones that were
common on most are considered to be the world's ancient wonders. The oldest of the ancient
wonders is the Great Pyramid of Giza. It is believed by historians that this pyramid was built for
Pharaoh Khufu and took about 20 years for its construction to be concluded in 2560 BC. Records
show that it is 756 feet long on each side and its vertical height is 450 feet tall. Around a hundred
thousand slaves were employed and 2,300,000 blocks were used, one block being heavy to the
extent that 112 men would be needed to lift just one individual block. The interior architecture of the
pyramid consists of three chambers, one being for the King, the other for the Queen and one being a
Grand Gallery. The pyramid's entrance is 17 meters above ground level from where there is a
descending passage continued by an ascending passage several meters later. This pyramid is the
only ancient wonder which is largely intact

Ancient Wonders
Antipator created a list of awe inspiring structures that spanned a period of time, of approximately
three thousand years (Banks "Preface"). The list came to be called the, Seven Wonders of the
Ancient World, as each wonder was located in different areas of the world (Banks "Preface").
Europe could only claim one, two were in Africa, while three were located in Asia, leaving the final
one on a small island south of Greece (Banks "Preface"). These structures were spoke of throughout
time due to their magnificence and level of skill it took to create each masterpiece. Of the seven
structures, only one still remains, the Great Pyramid of Giza, which also happens to be the oldest.

It is considered the sixth wonder, only thought to be slightly older than the Lighthouse of Alexandria
(Banks "Preface"). The Colossus is also considered the wonder with the shortest lifespan of about
half a century (Editors Ch. 9). As an offering to their sun god, Helios, the Rhodians had the
Colossus built so that they would forever remember winning the war against Antigous, who sent his
son Demetrius, and an army of forty–thousand men, to punish the Rhodians for supporting Ptolemy
("The Colossus of Rhodes"). The great structure was placed on the Island of Rhodes, which was
"located off the southwestern tip of Asia Minor where the Aegean Sea meets the Mediterranean"
(Krystek "Colossus..." 1). "The sculptor, Charles of Lindus, took twelve years to complete the
statue, finishing it about 280 BC" ("Colossus" C–481a). "The statue was one hundred and ten feet
high and stood upon a fifty–foot pedestal near the harbor mole ("Colossus of Rhodes" 1). From the
war machines that Demetrius left behind, bronze was melted down for the exterior, while the
framework was composed of iron ("Colossus of Rhodes" 1). Around 226 BC an earthquake hit the
Island of Rhodes and the statue fell into the sea leaving only the some of the base intact (Krystek
"Colossus..." 1). "In the seventh century AD the Arabs conquered Rhodes and broke the remains of
the Colossus up into smaller pieces and sold it as scrap metal" ("Colossus of Rhodes"

Ancient Rome And Its Effects On The World
Ancient Rome was built on hills, the people living on the top of the hills, and farming closer to the
bottom. The climate of Ancient Rome was humid and cool and ranged from 55 to 95 Fahrenheit
year round. The Alps to the far north of Rome protected them from threats coming from North
Europe, while not isolating them on the peninsula. Being on the Italian peninsula was useful for
trading and sailing to other areas in the Mediterranean to conquer land. Rome did not trade as much
as some other civilizations around the Mediterranean such as the Egyptians. Most people in Ancient
Rome were farmers and sold most of what they grew to the markets. Rich landowners had lots of
land and either rented it to poorer farmers, or had their many slaves farm it for them. Some
wealthier shopkeepers sailed around the Mediterranean trading for papyrus and similar items that
ordinary people could afford; however, some traders went further into the Indian Ocean, or West
Asia, some traders even imported silk all the way from China, which only the richest could afford.
The richest and most powerful people in Ancient Rome were the patricians. The patricians were the
wealthiest and were usually part of the Senate, or other governmental figures. Each year an
assembly of the citizens and equites/landowners would vote new members of the Senate into office.
The social structure of Ancient Rome was a hierarchy. The highest class were the patricians,
followed by the plebeians, who were ordinary citizens

The Contributions Of Ancient Technology In The Ancient World
There are thousands of years and many examples of ancient technology that leave us in awe at the
knowledge and wisdom attained by people of the past. These past civilizations made incredible
advances in engineering and innovation as the latest and most powerful civilizations emerged and
came to control the ancient world. These advances sparked societies to adopt new ways of living
and governance, as well as new ways of contemplating their world. Three examples of ancient
technological that garnered my attention the most were Sumerian form of writing called cuneiform,
the fascinating Assyrians made aqueducts and the sheer scale and integrity of ancient Roman
architecture that was brought to the new regions of their empire. Cuneiform was the earliest form of
writing in 3100 B.C.E that ushered in the world's first Information age (Fiero 12). The creation of
the Sumerian writing system happened because the Mesopotamians needed a way to keep track of
clay tokens they used to count agricultural goods. This system was used to keep track of information
such as religious activities, business transactions such as trade and sales. Cuneiform was used by
scholars to for stories, myths, and personal letters. Cuneiform is composed of wedge–shaped
characters and was written on clay tablets that resembled marks made by a chicken scratching in the
mud. Many languages throughout a vast geographical span over thousands of years were written in
cuneiform, including Sumerian, Hittite, Hurrian

TBI In The Ancient World
TBI in the Ancient World
The Edwin Smith papyrus, an ancient Egyptian treatise dating from 1600 BC, probably is the oldest
document of the examination and treatment for TBI. As the research of Heinrich–Heine–University
has suggested, Egyptian physicians were capable of recognizing some of symptoms and classifying
injury patterns, to an extent. A treatise "On Wounds in the Head" written by Hippocrates, a priest–
physician lived during Greece's Classical Period, forwarded the understanding of head injuries. He
came up with the clinical evaluation that based on observation and reasoning and detailed
description of trepanation, a process of making a hole in the skull bone to release pressure in the
brain.

Ancient Greek Influence On The Modern World
Ancient Greek Influence on the Modern World
Knowledge of ancient Greeks is still influencing the modern world through their advancement and
development of government, military, sciences, mathematics, art, and architecture. Centered around
perfection of the mind and body, ancient Greek society can be seen through these various areas of
their society.
The ancient Greek society began with having monarchies and oligarchies, but in 510 AD Athens
would create the first democracy (Carr). Athens was ruled by a the Council of 500, which was the
first democratic body in the world. The council consisted of land owning men, above the age of 18
who got on the council by getting their names drawn (Blackwell). The method is much like one
would see for a draft in recent wars. Instead of their name getting picked, they would have to serve
on the council. The Council of 500, and creation of the democratic type of government has had a
great impact on the modern world today. Alexander Hamilton stated, "Had every Athenian citizen
been a Socrates, every Athenian assembly would still have been a mob." (The Federalist, No. LIV;
by Alexander Hamilton). Hamilton believed the democratic system of government from ancient
Greece was too unstable, and the republic system, used in ancient Rome, would be both more stable
and better for a nation. Even though Hamilton did not find the democratic system to be the best type
of government, he did find that a republic, which was influenced by the democratic

History THE BIRTH OF THE CITY–STATE
The term Ancient, or Archaic, Greece refers to the time three centuries before the classical age,
between 800 B.C. and 500 B.C.–a relatively sophisticated period in world history. Archaic Greece
saw advances in art, poetry and technology, but most of all it was the age in which the polis, or city–
state, was invented. The polis became the defining feature of Greek political life for hundreds of
years. During the so–called "Greek Dark Ages" before the Archaic period, people lived in the village
and they grew larger . Some built and some built super market. They developed governments and
organized citizens and recorded laws. They raised armies and taxes.

Ancient Greece And The Modern World
A society is ultimately defined by its values, customs, and traditions. Bathing, a seemingly common
practice for modern day inhabitants, is a process that shaped the culture of Ancient Rome, and
established a deeper insight into the way Ancient Romans conducted their everyday lives.
Originating from Ancient Greece, the Romans took the concept of personal hygiene to a different,
and more grandiose level; and by doing so established a unique practice which set Rome apart from
any other ancient civilization at the time. The ideas and customs exhibited from the bathing process
lingered on to the modern world, as parallels between Rome and the modern world are clearly
evident. Bathing was a practice that was devised long before the establishment of Ancient Rome.
The earliest forms of western bathing originated from Greece when Greeks began to utilize bathing
practices by operating small bathtubs, foot baths, and wash basins for their own cleanliness. Having
access to such instruments was considered to be luxurious, as the earliest of these findings were
found in palaces located in Crete and Santorini. Within gymnasium complexes, public showers and
baths were used for relaxation and hygiene. Besides being used for personal hygiene, the Greeks
believed that certain natural springs were blessed by the Gods to cure disease, making certain pools
considered to be sacred. Bathing facilities were established around these pools and attracted those
who wished to be healed. Consequently,

These are cultures that placed a great deal of value in aesthetics and architecture. There are in fact
many structures and artifacts that have survived from those civilizations. The Greek and Romans
pursued and appreciation what they believed to be aesthetic and mathematical perfection. In the
ancient world, these civilizations agreed upon seven examples of perfection, which we now know as
the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The paper will provide a brief examination of the wonders
and provide insight as to why they were and are considered so wonderful. The phrase "Seven
Wonders of the World" was coined in approximately the first and second centuries BC. The "seven
wonders" refer to seven examples of architecture and art that the Romans and Greeks considered to
be as close to perfection as could be reached on Earth by their standards. The seven wonders of the
ancient world are as follows: The Great Pyramid of Giza; The Hanging Gardens of Babylon; The
Statue of Zeus at Olympia; The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus; The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus;
The Colossus of Rhodes; and The Lighthouse of Alexandria. All of the seven wonders are in the

Political Systems In The Ancient World
The ancient world was a period of history defined from around the years of 4000–300 B.C.E. This
time period encompassed diverse leaders and events that lead to the transformation of political
structures and organizations. Political systems in the ancient world evolved over time and could be
examined by key elements including leadership, laws, bureaucracy, justice, diplomacy, and warfare.
Three essential regions in history that proved to be the foundations of political systems with a focus
on these key elements were Mesopotamia, Egypt, and Greece. Mesopotamia Mesopotamia was a
region that expanded from today's Syria to Iraq and settled between the Euphrates and Tigris Rivers
which was commonly referred to as the Fertile Crescent. These water supplies were used as a vital

The Contributions And Importance Of Architecture In The...
Architecture was very important in the ancient world. It contributed to the culture of countless
civilizations in many different ways, including the Ancient Egyptians, the Ancient Romans, and the
Ancient Chinese. Architecture was used in the ancient world to intimidate other empires and to
show the importance and achievements of their society.
The Ancient Egyptians ruled from 3100 BC to 322 BC, which was when they were conquered by
Alexander the Great. [7] At the peak of its rule, Ancient Egypt was a very advanced civilization.
One of the main elements they advanced in was architecture. Egypt's first pyramid was the Djoser's
Step Pyramid. [2] This pyramid showed the world how much the Egyptians had advanced in
designing and constructing architecture. [2] It was the first pyramid of its time. In Ancient Egypt,
architecture was sometimes used to honor their gods, such as Ra, Horus, and Isis. [2] They made
massive, complex, temples in their honor and used their pictures on the walls of their burial tombs.
It was also sometimes used to show the relationship between the gods and the humans at that time.
[2] If Egyptians felt like the gods were mad at them, they might make the pyramids bigger and more
elaborate to worship the gods in a bigger way.
One famous architectural structure built by the Egyptians was the Pyramids of Giza. The Pyramids
of Giza were built from 2550 BC to 2490 BC. [8] The Pyramids of Giza served as a symbol of talent

Kiela DeVlaeminck Jason Schlude History 130: The Ancient World 7 October 2014 Great Empires
What makes an empire "great"? Is an empire great because it encompasses a lot of land and people
or is an empire great ultimately because of the legacy it leaves behind after the years??An Empire
can be defined as, "A group of nations or peoples ruled over by an emperor, empress, or other
powerful sovereign or government: usually a territory of greater extent than a kingdom, as the
former British Empire, French Empire, Russian Empire, Byzantine Empire, or Roman
Empire(dictionary.com)." At the center, an empire is the domination of one state by another. The
earliest city–states tried to grow stronger by taking over their neighbors land and people. This can be
seen between the confict with Athens and Sparta. Greece was dominated by two powers during the
5th century: Athens and Sparta. They could be described as the democratic Athens and the military
oligarchy of Sparta. However, these city states were different in many aspects. Sparta had the land
power and controlled many neighboring territories and most of the land was tied to slaves. Athens
power lied in the sea. They had a very strong naval team that controlled the Delian league which is
what led to Athens becoming a strong and powerful empire. When a member of the Delian League
became rebellious, Athens would take their freedom and use their strong navy to suppress them.
Their allies would also have to pay tribute or bring ships.

Of the Ancient World
The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World are the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Hanging Gardens of
Babylon, the Statue of Zeus in Olympia, the Temple of Artemis in Ephesus, the Mausoleum at
Halicarnassus, the Colossus of Rhodes, and the Lighthouse of Alexandria. These are seven
absolutely magnificent structures, built in the ancient world. The Seven Wonders of the Ancient
World were first called themata, which translates in Greek to 'things to be seen'.
The Great Pyramid of Giza, located in Egypt, was built between 2583 and 2561 BCE for the
Egyptian pharaoh Khufu, also Known as Cheops in Greek culture. The Great Pyramid of Giza was
the tallest man–made structure for nearly 4,000 years. The excavation of the interior of the pyramid
was initiated in the late 18th century and early 19th century. The structure itself, with its imposing
height and perfect symmetry, is what impressed most ancient visitors. The Great Pyramid is also the
only one of the Seven Wonders which still stand in fabulous condition to this day.
The Hanging Gardens of Babylon are also one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The
Hanging Gardens was built by the Babylonian ruler, Nebuchadnezzar, as a gift to his wife. Diodorus

The Ancient Roman world, the various Germanic and Norse barbarians, and Christianity all played a
big role in the creation of the society, politics and ideas in the Middle Ages. You may have not
known but the beginning of the Middle Ages (5th to 15th century) is marked when the Western
Roman Empire is invaded (1000 B.C) by the Germanic barbarians who were from Northern Europe
("Middle Ages"). The Germanic people specifically the Goths, Vandals, Saxons and Franks adapted
most of the Romans ideas and ways of living and combined it with their own creating a new
medieval culture in Western Rome. The Huns started to invade the territory north of the Black Sea
which was where the Germanic People had settled. ("Middle Ages "). This led to the invasion of
Western Rome which then led to the fall of the Western Empire who had lost almost all their power
to be able to defend themselves. During the Middle Ages Catholic churches specifically the Popes
were the ones who ruled much of the society as there was not one government that untied all the
people in Western Rome during the Middle Ages ("Christianity In The Middle Ages."). The society
was greatly influenced by the Catholic Church at the beginning of the Middle ages due to its power
over the people and the government which allowed them to create rules that were "from God". After
the collapse of the Roman Empire which occurred in the 5th century the only church that existed in

The World Of Ancient Egypt

  • 1. The World of Ancient Egypt Defence Force – the protectors of the borders: The army – ancient Egypt's fighters: In the old kingdom, there was no permanent army. Untrained men from villagers were called upon in time of war. Egypt's natural barriers, the desrt for one, ensured that this didn't happen very often. The army became professional during middle Kingdom and they fought with no armour. The Pharaoh always led his army into battle, surrounded by a group of soldiers called the 'Braves of the King'. He rode on a chariot wearing armour and a blue war crown. Army life was tough, with very harsh training and whippings if you did something wrong. Talented soldiers could greatly improve their social position by becoming wealthy. The Battle of Kadesh– greatest victory of Pharaoh Ramesses: The Egyptian army had marched to face the Hittite army. On the way, they caught two strangers. These strangers claimed that the Hittite army was far away. But in actual fact, they were spies for the enemy and the Hittite were waiting for them in the city of Kadesh. Then, the Egyptian army caught 2 more spies and Ramesses realized they were spies for the Hittites. The Egyptian's found themselves surrounded and most of the army fled, leaving only their pharaoh and his shield–bearer to fight the greatest battle of their lives. It is said that Ramesses prayed to the great god Amun and gained strength, enough to beat all of the Hittites. This is the story of the Great Battle of Kadesh. • 2. The Ancient Mediterranean World No culture can be completely isolated; a culture that refuses to learn and share with the other cultures around it becomes stagnant and may die out completely. The cultures of the ancient Mediterranean world were certainly far from isolated. The willingness of these cultures to adopt and adapt from each other is part of what makes them so rich and complex. Even as most ancient Mediterranean societies were just beginning, Egypt and its culture were flourishing. As the Chalcolithic Age gave way to the Bronze Age, the Upper and Lower Kingdoms of Egypt joined together and began expanding. This expansion spread the culture and art of the Egyptians around the ancient Mediterranean world. Many cultures adopted the common Egyptian image of a winged sun disk, representative in their culture of the sun god Ra; once adopted into other cultures, its meaning changed, but its general shape remained the same. Archaic Greek art, as well, was highly influenced by Egyptian art; many early Greek statues mimic the stiff posture and striding pose of Egyptian pharaoh illustrations (Purcell; Gilders). The Egyptians helped to shape a somewhat unified Mediterranean culture. Cultures aside from Egypt began to grow and flourish in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Stamped and minted coinage is directly taken from Greek culture, and the columns found in many government buildings can be attributed to Grecian architecture. However, the Greeks did not simply develop their culture from scratch. They, too, allowed other cultures to influence their own, taking things such as Egyptian art styles and Phoenician alphabets and making them their own. It is this culture, developed from the cultures surrounding Greece and later spread through Alexander's imperial expansion, that would one day become the baseline for much of modern society and ... • 3. The Gods Of The Ancient World Some of the Goddesses of the Ancient World The goddesses named in this chapter occur in the midst of the earliest pagan deities mentioned in numerous ancient writings; particularly, the ones frequently linked to the land of Canaan. In fact, several of the goddesses that promoted idolatry and prostitution exist directly in the King James Version of the Bible, such as Ashtoreth, Diana and Lilith. Although, the word 'prostitute' exists only once (Lev 19:29), still, prostitution happens to be identified with various words; such as "whore(s), whoredom(s). harlot(s), pollute or polluted;" (which can mean prostitute) that encounters being mentioned frequently. The prophets of the Bible warned regarding whoring after other gods and goddesses and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For due to the goddess, routinely unmarried women, including those from the chief families in the country, befell being ordered to prostitute themselves in the temple at least once during their lifetime. Herodotus' describes this ancient practice that exploited women sexually, stating: Emphatically, due to the goddesses, women and young girls required to have their virginity callously stolen away–how sick is that? Indeed, the paint brush of this practice appears to be broad among the fertility goddesses, for this domination became witnessed repeatedly in various lands; instigating unwanted pregnancy. Generally, the most vulnerable time in a female's life occurs generally during pregnancy or the rearing of small children; therefore this reality helped evil cripple women into submission through the centuries. The following occurs as a brief summary of a few of the main goddesses in the land of Mesopotamia, the ancient Middle East and surrounding areas. Lilith Lilith became intertwined with Ishtar and Inanna in Babylonian as sacred prostitutes, and in the Old Testament her existence occurs subtly. Furthermore, Lilith became a sexual predator towards men and dwelled in desolate desert places as stated in the Bible. Along with other demons, Lilith occurs referenced in the Dead Sea Scrolls that contains an undeniable indication of Lilith's reputation by being grouped with evil. Virtually, early portrayals of various demons identify with Lilith and became ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Analysis Of The Seven Wonders Of The Ancient World The original seven wonders of the world list is "The Lighthouse at Alexandria, The Great Pyramid at Giza, The Colossus of Rhodes, The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, The Statue of Zeus at Olympia, The Hanging Gardens of Babylon". (The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World Silverberg) This list can be both problematic and lacking because the reading and the website article both show different illustrations on what the seven wonders look like. This can be problematic because many people may see different images of them and not get the right idea of what they look like. This can also be lacking because, the information may not be gathered correctly and give false information on what they look like. Both sources the reading "The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World" and the online source "Ancient.eu/ The_Seven_Wonders" both say different things on where they came from. For example the reading says that the list comes before Christ and a poet Antipater drew up the list and the online source says that the list comes from Themala "Greek things to be seen" and was created by Philoof Byzantium. The "Seven Wonders of the Ancient World" is a list that historians have traced back to the second century BCE. However, when inspected closely, the list appears to be biased because in the printed source says the list comes from before Christ and a poet Antipater drew up the list. • 7. Inventions Of The Ancient World Our modern technology dates back thousands and thousands of years ago to the ancient world. If it wasn't for the civilizations who started this all, we would have very little to no technology, because they were the creators of our world today. The simplest things they created to help them survive and make everyday life easier has improved over the years and have also made it simpler for us to survive as well. Their cultures started a movement for technology and some of the things they invented are incredibly creative and genius. To look back and see the inventions they made with their own bare hands is amazing, considering they had no machines to help them build things and basically had no base to piggy back off of. Three cultures that truly shaped the way we live today were the ancient Egyptians, the ancient Greeks, and the Romans. The ancient Egyptians can date back to 30 BCE when Cleopatra was reigning for her short period of time, before she died in 31 BCE ("Ancient Egyptian Civilization"). Ancient inventions came after that and continued to improve. The most famous and profound Egyptian invention are the pyramids, which was first being built in 2667 BC and was finished in 2648 BC for King Zocer (Millmore, 2017). More pyramids were built afterwards like the famous pyramids of Giza, which were also built for the kings who reigned. Another famous Egyptian invention that shaped our language were the hieroglyphics and pictograms, which are said to be created around 3300 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. The Role Of Women In The Ancient World As the author, Rachel Wolchin, once said, "Behind every great man stands no woman. There is no greater man than the man that can acknowledge the woman standing right next to him." Over the course of history, there has been a progressional change in how society has treated women. Although many times, we notice either an individual or a group of women that have looked past social boundaries and redefined the role of women, there is very little recognition of the accomplishments of these women, and history often encompasses the efforts of men. This is illustrated especially in the studies of ancient civilizations. We notice throughout many eras that the role of women is pertaining to the household or bearing children, and that men were the head ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They were born to be leaders, and their instinct to grow into one will come naturally in an environment where one is needed. The theory was called the "Great Man" theory because it was influenced by how society would associate success and strong leadership with traits that can be stereotypically called 'masculine'. Under the belief that women do not possess these characteristics, society would dislike the idea of women in leadership. • 10. Ancient Greece And Rome During The World Ancient Greece and Rome are some of the most famous time periods in the world, but what influenced them? Ancient Greece lasted roughly from 1000–400 B.C.E while ancient Rome was from 753 B.C.–476 A.D (Cole and Symes, 75). The Greek alphabet was influenced by Phoenician sea traders and their art was mostly influenced by Egypt and western Asia. On the other hand, Rome was influenced by the Greek and derived the alphabet, many of their religious beliefs, and much of their art (Cole and Symes, 147). Ancient Greece and Rome were influenced by the Ancient Near East sedentary societies through art, religion, and architecture. Greece was the first society that was male dominated . Also, sexuality was a part of everyday life for Greeks. If home owners did not offer hospitality to certain groups of people, then they would be sentenced to death (Garcia Lecture 2/3/16). The Greeks had extremely strict rules with education and training. Greece is also known well for their world famous philosophers such as Aristotle, Socrates, Plato, and much more. Ancient Rome started as a small town in central Italy, but developed into a vast empire, including continental Europe, Britain, much of western Asia, northern Africa and the Mediterranean islands. Although Rome was influenced by many aspects of Greek life, they downplayed their influence in mythology, preferring to emphasize their alleged descent from the Trojans (Cole and Symes, 147). • 11. The Seven Wonders Of The Ancient World Seven Wonders of the Ancient and New World The world is full of beautiful places but there are some places that are considered from the wonders of the world. These places and buildings were named as the seven wonders of the ancient world. Herodotus, A Greek historian, wrote about these wonders thousands of years ago. At this time, he thought that these buildings were the greatest structures in the world and he made a list of these places and called it the Seven Wonders of The Ancient World. A wonder is a structure created by something strange and amazing; when we see it, we say that it is rare and unexpected. Although there are several wonders in the world, there are seven that are recognized as being ancient. Tom Jackson, in his book The Seven Wonders of The World, has written that the great pyramids of Egypt; they are the most ancient and historical place in Egypt, were built in Giza. These pyramids are very old, they have been there for over four thousand years. It is believed that the shape of these pyramids symbolized the prehistoric knoll from which they believed life emerged. The big sizes of these pyramids symbolize the power and the greatness of their country back in that days. Another structure that considered also one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World is the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. They are also known as the hanging gardens of Semiramis. Nebuchadnezzar II IN 200 BCE, wanted to please his beloved wife Semiramis so he built these gardens. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Seven Wonders Of The Ancient World The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World are the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the Statue of Zeus in Olympia, the Temple of Artemis in Ephesus, the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, the Colossus of Rhodes, and the Lighthouse of Alexandria. These are seven absolutely magnificent structures, built in the ancient world. The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World were first called themata, which translates in Greek to 'things to be seen'. The Great Pyramid of Giza, located in Egypt, was built between 2583 and 2561 BCE for the Egyptian pharaoh Khufu, also Known as Cheops in Greek culture. The Great Pyramid of Giza was the tallest man–made structure for nearly 4,000 years. The excavation of the interior of the pyramid was initiated in the late 18th century and early 19th century. The structure itself, with its imposing height and perfect symmetry, is what impressed most ancient visitors. The Great Pyramid is also the only one of the Seven Wonders which still stand in fabulous condition to this day. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon are also one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The Hanging Gardens was built by the Babylonian ruler, Nebuchadnezzar, as a gift to his wife. Within the "Ancient World" exhibit, a Cycladic Idol, a Roman copy of Greek artist Praxiteles's statue of Aphrodite, and a Red–figure Krater are on display. All three artworks trace the progression of Greek culture and the later Romans who imitated much of Greek culture and art. The St. Petersburg Museum of Fine Arts, or MFA, is curated both by era and by culture. For example, the "Ancient World" room contains art from a particular time period and a variety of cultures; however, the "Art of the Americas" room is made up of art from a specific culture over a large amount of time. All of the works mentioned above were placed within the "Ancient World" room. The curator chose to place the statue of Aphrodite on a pedestal in the center of the room, so it is the first thing visitors see when they enter the room. Writings on these tablets describe the possible use of something similar to an Archimedes' screw as a process of raising the water to the required height. The Greek Historian Diodorus (Antipar) said: "The Garden was 100 feet long by 100 feet wide and built up in tiers so that it resembled a theater. Vaults had been constructed under the ascending terraces which carried the entire weight of the planted garden; the uppermost vault, which was seventy–five feet high, was the highest part of the garden, which, at this point, was on the same level as the city walls. The roofs of the vaults which supported the garden were constructed of stone beams some sixteen feet long, and over these were laid first a layer of reeds set in thick tar, then two courses of baked brick bonded by cement, and finally a covering of lead to prevent the moisture in the soil penetrating the roof. The role of god in the ancient world Essay The questions about the existence of life and the creation of the world are always mind–boggling and fascinating, however, the real answer to these questions may never surface. All there is to rely on are the myths, stories and legends passed on from generation to generation by ancestors and the clues they have left. This essay will try to uncover the ancient Mesopotamian and Hebrew views on existence and creation by looking at sources like the Genesis and other ancient Mesopotamian texts and poems. Line four: "...the wise Mami...the one who creates mankind", suggests that the Mesopotamians owed their existence to the mother goddess "Mami" who is also known as Nihursaga, Nintur and Nintu. The poem describes Mami as the creator of "Lullu" which is an allusion to Adam of the Old Testament. The ancient text also reveals the Mesopotamian belief that people were created from a mixture of divine blood and clay. Clay is a good analogy to describe people because humans are brought into the world soft, fragile and ready to be molded and hardened by the world and their experiences in it, so they can provide the ultimate service to god. Another important note is that clay is typically found in Israel. A second form of worship in the ancient world was called monotheism and was widely practiced by Hebrews. The Hebrews and Mesopotamians were geographically located close to one another. This may be why their creation stories show so many similarities. The creation story from Genesis: 2:1–24 (p.43) reveals that god created life in seven days. According to the text, god created man from the "dust of the ground" by breathing life into his nostrils and was to cultivate and take care of the Garden of Eden. During the fourth century, the Greeks had conquered sufficient land in Persia, Egypt and Babylon which gave writers access to travel these areas freely. Rich landowners had lots of land and either rented it to poorer farmers, or had their many slaves farm it for them. Some wealthier shopkeepers sailed around the Mediterranean trading for papyrus and similar items that ordinary people could afford; however, some traders went further into the Indian Ocean, or West Asia, some traders even imported silk all the way from China, which only the richest could afford. Centered around perfection of the mind and body, ancient Greek society can be seen through these various areas of their society. The ancient Greek society began with having monarchies and oligarchies, but in 510 AD Athens would create the first democracy (Carr). Athens was ruled by a the Council of 500, which was the first democratic body in the world. The council consisted of land owning men, above the age of 18 who got on the council by getting their names drawn (Blackwell). The method is much like one would see for a draft in recent wars. Instead of their name getting picked, they would have to serve on the council. The Council of 500, and creation of the democratic type of government has had a great impact on the modern world today. Originating from Ancient Greece, the Romans took the concept of personal hygiene to a different, and more grandiose level; and by doing so established a unique practice which set Rome apart from any other ancient civilization at the time. The ideas and customs exhibited from the bathing process lingered on to the modern world, as parallels between Rome and the modern world are clearly evident. Bathing was a practice that was devised long before the establishment of Ancient Rome. The earliest forms of western bathing originated from Greece when Greeks began to utilize bathing practices by operating small bathtubs, foot baths, and wash basins for their own cleanliness. Having access to such instruments was considered to be luxurious, as the earliest of these findings were found in palaces located in Crete and Santorini. Within gymnasium complexes, public showers and baths were used for relaxation and hygiene. Architecture was used in the ancient world to intimidate other empires and to show the importance and achievements of their society. The Ancient Egyptians ruled from 3100 BC to 322 BC, which was when they were conquered by Alexander the Great. [7] At the peak of its rule, Ancient Egypt was a very advanced civilization. One of the main elements they advanced in was architecture. Egypt's first pyramid was the Djoser's Step Pyramid. Is an empire great because it encompasses a lot of land and people or is an empire great ultimately because of the legacy it leaves behind after the years??An Empire can be defined as, "A group of nations or peoples ruled over by an emperor, empress, or other powerful sovereign or government: usually a territory of greater extent than a kingdom, as the former British Empire, French Empire, Russian Empire, Byzantine Empire, or Roman Empire(dictionary.com)." At the center, an empire is the domination of one state by another. The earliest city–states tried to grow stronger by taking over their neighbors land and people. This can be seen between the confict with Athens and Sparta. Greece was dominated by two powers during the 5th century: Athens and Sparta. They could be described as the democratic Athens and the military oligarchy of Sparta. However, these city states were different in many aspects. Sparta had the land power and controlled many neighboring territories and most of the land was tied to slaves. Athens power lied in the sea. They had a very strong naval team that controlled the Delian league which is what led to Athens becoming a strong and powerful empire. When a member of the Delian League became rebellious, Athens would take their freedom and use their strong navy to suppress them. Their allies would also have to pay tribute or bring ships. ...
