Fun Facts About Chile
In my paper I will be discussing fun fun facts on Chile. Over time Chile's economical features have
changed drastically due to the nation of Chile's background. It's just slightly larger than the state
Texas, and achieved independence in 1810. During this time period, Chile's early nationhood was
constitutionally driven and peaceful. The resulting stability allowed for a steady development.
Chile's economy continues to grow through education, culture, entertainment, and population. Chile
is long and narrow but stretches over 2,300 miles north & south. The population was 12,53600 in
1987 and has drastically increased since then. Chile's population in 2010 increased to over 16
million. Being that the population continues to increase over time

Chile Culture
"Chile is a place where God put a little piece of all the rest of the world." (Traditions). A Chilean
native said this when talking of all the culture that has concreted together from different ethnicities
coming together in their native country. Chile has a fascinating culture and way of life, and the more
you learn of it through studying their heritage, life in cities and rural areas, and domestic life, the
more captivating it becomes.
Although life in Chile has changed in many ways, much of the past heritage is similar to the current
heritage. Most citizens older than 14 can read and write. Free public school is provided in Chile, and
children must attend 8 years of elementary school. Children are required to wear uniforms, but when
they are not in uniforms, they have a very similar style of cloths to our culture's. Music is very big
in Chile now, also, like it has been in the past. Much of Chile is Roman ... Show more content on

Before the 1960s, fundos – which were large estates – filled the countryside. Many families worked
on fundos, receiving a small wage. But during the 1960s, the government broke up fundos, causing
rural citizens to lose their jobs and move to cities, clearing up the countryside. Those left in rural
areas enjoy family outings and visiting friends and neighbors for recreation, in view of the fact that
the countryside has very little people since fundos have broken up. Citizens who live in cities,
however, go to movies, plays, ballets, and operas to entertain themselves. 80% of Chileans live in
cities by the coast, a majority of the residents looking for a better life. Many of the poor live in
callampas – mushrooms – because they seem to spring up overnight. Even though you may not
think the difference in way of life in cities and rural areas doesn't cause major differences, the closer
the attention you pay to the details, the more differences you begin to

Cultural Analysis : Chile And The United States

Cultural Analysis Paper
Nov 30, 2016 Chile The United States is my homeland, and a place that I know is very diverse. The
United States might be diverse but it still has certain aspects of the culture that apply to everyone. In
South America there are twelve countries. Chile is the seventh biggest in the whole country. Chile is
a place where it is more modern now, and more modern than any of the other countries. It is
consisted of different types of climates, and practices. There are many things that go into a culture
and what makes them a unique culture. In this paper I will be discussing different aspects of a
culture in Chile. I will go over Collectivism, Masculinity v Femininity, High Power Distance
Culture, the Religions, wars, Polychronic culture time orientation, and the Verbal and Nonverbal
communications they have. All these things gives Chile their unique culture within South America
and even the world.
Chiles Culture: In the textbook , "An Introduction to Intercultural Communication: Identities in
Global Community," by Fred E. Jandt, the author defines culture as the, "sum total of ways of
living, including behavioral norms, linguistic expression, styles of communication, patterns of
thinking, and beliefs and values of a group large enough to be self–sustaining and transmitted over
the course of generations." In a culture

GLOBAL MULTI–PRODUCTS CHILE THE CHILEAN CULTURE The Chilean culture tends to
be an individualistic society in the business environment. They are the most serious people in Latin
America. However, they are professional in their behavior in terms of politeness and indirectness.
They seem to be workaholics with their routine days of about 12 hours. Trust in the Chilean cultures
among each other, remains on the edge. It is difficult for a Chilean to trust another individual despite
their race, sex or origin. Teamwork remains a mission in process in Chile.

Ultimately, the goal of Global Multi–Products Chile is to promote a corporate culture that embraces
trust and reliance between different departments. Unfortunately trust takes a long time to build and
this compensation solution can be implemented in the short term while developing the necessary
trust for the desired corporate culture.
NEED FOR ESTABLISHING COMMON GOALS AND PRODUCTIVE CORPORATE
CULTURE Problem: Global Multi–Products Chile has gone through many changes and employees
feel volatile and lack trust amongst departments. This lack of trust found in the Chilean workplace is
hindering Multi–Products ability to compete with large western manufacturers for important clients.
Solution: Executive managers need to communicate longer term goals and visions for the
organization through small steps and workshops in each of the different departments. Employees of
similar status might engage in after work socializing activities. This would permit the development
of personal relationships between employees in similar departments perhaps alleviating some of the
distrust found at Multi–Products Chile. Another area of importance is the instruction to more senior
managers relaying to them the value of working with members in the different sales departments
and what ever other departments necessary in order to better serve

Mexican Food Research Paper
Mexico has many fascinating things about it. The most interesting to me, is the language and food.
The word "Mexico" is derived from the word "Mexica" (pronounced "Me–shee–ka"), the name for
the native group that settled in central Mexico in the early fourteenth century and is best known as
the Aztecs.
Spanish is the official language of Mexico and is spoken by more than 95 percent of the population.
It was introduced through conquest and colonization. Mexican Spanish is rooted in the Spanish of
Spain. There are not really any major important differences between the two except for the
pronunciation and sounds which are different. Certain words from the main Indian language
(Nahuatl) are incorporated into Mexican Spanish; especially in the ... Show more content on

A popular religious fiesta is the Día de la Candelaria (Candlemas) on February 2nd, which
celebrates the purification of Mary and the presentation and blessing of Jesus. After the church
ceremony, family and close friends join for tamales. During the Day of the Dead, November 2nd,
people eat "pan de muerto" (bread of the dead), a long and flat sweet bread prepared with eggs and
sugar. At Christmas, people eat "romeritos", a plant similar to rosemary served with sauce and
potatoes; "bacalao", dried codfish cooked and served in a sauce of tomatoes, olives, and onions.
They also eat different kinds of stuffed turkey. In September, people celebrate independence and, in

The Spanish Conquest Of Chile
Chile was beginning to be conquered by the Spanish in the mid 16th century. The conquest begun
with Diego de Almagro and Francisco Pizarro in 1536 and 1537 near the Maule River. They were
searching for gold and civilization, found neither, and returned to Peru. The first conquest happened
in 1540–1541, under the command of Pedro de Valdivia, which founded Santiago. During this time,
there were at least 500,000 native people living in Chile (Britannica). Additionally, many of these
cultures were intertwined. In Northern Chile, groups relied on fishing and farming, and this area was
successfully taken under the influence of the expanding Inca empire. The Chincha and the Quechua
who were apart of this empire also tried to conquer Central and

America. I want to see the difference in Spanish speaking countries because not all of them are the
same. It is always cool to see a new country, but it is even better exploring it on your own without

find your way around the country with no help. Also, you are much freer to do what you want

Analysis Of Colonialism By Walcott
Colonialism's initial assumption or rather a presumption was to create a civilised and ordered world
through establishing dominion over seemingly uncivilised and backwards countries. The colonial
enterprise was justified based on the prevalent discourses of savage and primitive natives as reality
was hidden due to a severe lack of historical narrative from the natives themselves. The 'white man's
burden' is to care for indigenous people who are unable to survive. This becomes a disguise for
economic interests in colonisation. An important aspect of colonisation was to 'discover' new lands
and territories in order to accumulate them in their world. With the dawn of this age of discovery,
new areas were found and the New World was formed. This ... Show more content on

There is almost no romanticising of history as he depicts the bloody and gruesome truth behind
colonial repression. His poems become the tools to appropriate history and rewrite colonialism from
the perspective of the victims and not the colonisers. According to Walcott, colonialism caused a
separation or division of self in Caribbean writers who have to struggle with the questions of
identity. As Shara McCallum remarks:
A poem exposes and defines the moment that a particular consciousness and language meet; and
Walcott's poems tilt this moment of encounter toward the light in such a way that the gesture itself
and the resulting poem often reveal the prismatic nature of identity. (23)
Walcott admitted to being in a complex position of being stuck between a certain consciousness of
gratitude to the Western world for his cultural and intellectual learning and his allegiance to his
African lineage. This position is often represented in his work as it forms a hybrid identity for him.
Many critics call this the "schizophrenic situation" of Caribbean identity as they are in between two
drastically different cultures. In "A Far Cry from Africa", Walcott overtly addresses his struggle to
concretise his idea of identity:
I who am poisoned with the blood of

geographically speaking with a majority of the population residing in the central region, specifically
Santiago, the capital, and Viña del Mar. The official language is Spanish, although in some regions a
couple of other languages are still prevalent.

In 1945, Chile became a charter member of the United Nations. The post–world war époque bought
a lot of political and economic uproar to the people of Chile as communist and Christian democrat
parties were fighting steadily to claim governmental power.
In continuance, during the 1960's, a Christian–democrat majority finally formed the government but
was not able to stabilize the nation. The discontent of the people subsided in 1970 with the election
of Salvador Allende, who promised full nationalization of all basic industries and banks. He was the
first President of the western world that was chosen according to a communist program in a non–
Communist country. But opposition and resistance to his socialist policy was strong, both inside and
outside the country, as the U.S. supported his Allende's opponents financially and ideology–wise. In
1973 Allende was removed from power in a military coup, where he allegedly committed suicide.
Following Allende, the notorious Pinochet regime seized power. Under his rule, the Constitution,
Congress and political parties were dissolved. Thousands of political opponents were arrested,
executed, tortured or simply "disappeared". Augosto Pinochet, a military general, became President
and stayed in office until 1990 when he resigned as President. He remained involved, however, as
the Commander in Chief of the armed forces. In the mid 1990's a new elected Christian democratic

Guerrero's family both traditional beliefs and more medically based health care are
practiced/utilized. When Dr. Guerrero was a child she had asthma, and was not effectively treated
by the traditional medical treatments, so her mother sought out care from another family member
and used a more traditional Chilean remedy. Her mother took a bladder of a sheep, added Dr. G's
urine, put it in the attic and allowed it to dry. Once it dried it was supposed to clear up her asthma.
Dr. G's asthma eventually got better, but as to whether the bladder helped or the traditional Chilean
remedy helped, one does not know, Dr. G was unsure. Health care growing up in Chile for Dr. G
involved going to the doctor for her immunizations. That was about the only thing she went in for
with the exception of when she was ill. Then only when her illness could not be fixed with home
remedies. One was looked upon as being weak if they complained of pain or some other kind of
illness. She used chicken soup, herbs and just a wait and see kind of attitude. When doctors graduate
from medical school they are required to do public service in the community. That is how the public
hospitals are staffed. It is a part of their education and it gives them a good perspective, and
culturally it keeps the people healthier. In regards to who are able to become physicians, this is
usually limited to the middle and upper class. In Chile most people have to pay for their own

Throughout the story Allende makes many different reference to the Chilean way of life,
highlighting the culture, traditions, history and economy of Chile. On page 796, she states that "
Europe consumed more coffee, cocoa, and bananas then we as a nation could produce, but all that
demand was no bonanza for us: we continued to be as poor as ever." She is discussing the
exploitation of the natural resources that Chile had to offer, by the Spanish. When the spanish
conquered Chile, they exploited the people and the land, forcing them to export all of the natural
resources, yet the Chilean people did not earn anything in return, and they continued to live in
poverty. Allende then goes on to discuss how after oil was discovered, many thought that the hard
times were over, yet this was not the case. "Toward the end of the Great War there was a widely held
notion that ours was a prosperous country, when in truth most of the inhabitants still squished mud
beneath their toes" (Allende, p. 796). When dictator Pinochet was in charge, the country was indeed
very wealthy, yet only the top 1% of the country saw any of this wealth at all. The vast majority of
the citizens of Chile still live in extreme poverty and suffered. Allende later discusses the culture
and the advances that are being made in Chile. "In the capital there signs of progress: motorcars,

My Invented Country Analysis
One can imagine that every country is different with their own set of beliefs. Chile and Kuwait are
in total different parts of the world but they both have similarities. In Isabel Allende's My Invented
Country and Randa Jarrar's A Map of Home the authors focus on the road map of their childhood.
Allende explains the basics of her culture, while Jarrar does too through the character of Nidali.
Both women have seen and are aware that women do not have the same power as a male. Nidali
gets hit from her father if she does not do well in education. As for Allende, she explains how men
are machistas and the women are submissive. While Nidali is half–Egyptian and Palestine and
Isabel is Chilean and I am Mexican American, we all share the same struggle ... Show more content

The main reason she claims to love Chile is because of the stories her grandfather would tell her and
her experience of travelling in the south (Allende 111). She explains about the war, and how it
impacted the whole country. She was able to travel and get to experience the differences. In Chile
she states how they do not talk the terms of "racism" rather they differ themselves according to the
"class system" (Allende 34). She also states how the upper class in Chile is relatively white. No
matter where one goes in the world it appears as the lighter the skin the more advantages you will

with Europe, where long–haired hippies were a normal sight, student revolutions were brewing, and
the sexual liberation was being celebrated, Chile was boring; once again I felt like a foreigner."

because she got the chance to experience other countries besides Chile. If the war had not happened

Chile: A Brief History Of Chile
The South American country, Chile, is long and wide. It is 10 times long as it is wide and stretches
about 2650 miles from Peru to the southern tip of the continent. Chile's name is from the American
Indian word Chilli. Chilli means where the land ends. The Andes Mountains form the eastern
boundary of Chile and low mountains rise along the country's pacific coast. A region of fertile river
basins, the central valley, lie between the mountain ranges in central Chile. This is where most of
Chile's people live. Snow caped volcanoes, thick forests, and huge glaciers makeup the landscape
for southern Chile. Santiago is the capital of Chile and is also its largest city. (Monteón 458). Only

Cultural Differences In Chile
Chile is known as a long narrow continent located on the edge of the South American edge. in 1954
Santiago became the capital . The reason I chose this particular Spanish speaking county because I
found it interesting in so many different ways as the culture differences and the weather differences.
This country extends from north and south which have an excessive climate differences. Such as in
the north it lacks rainfall which causes the environment to hold water. Not only does it lack rainfall
but it also has very dry and hot summers and cool winters.
There are plenty of attraction and tradition that Chile provides to tourist and visitors. One known
tradition is Fiestas Patrias which is an independence Festival. The Fiestas is held on the 18 and 19 of

Ethical Issues In Chile
In a globalized market, where profits can be maximized, lenient regulations are expected, and with
environmental oversight, global managers are often faced with making ethical decisions. According
to Satterlee (2014), "Ethically speaking, one of the most important issues global business
professionals may face is that of being socially responsible in the cultures in which they choose to

How Did The 2010 Chile Earthquake Affect Chile's Economy?
The 2010 Chile earthquake, 2010 Haiti earthquake, and 2015 Nepal earthquake each had varying
impacts upon each country's economy, society, and culture.
Haiti and Nepal's economics were both very different from Chili's economy post earthquake.
Although Chile experienced economic loss, due to the destruction of infrastructure, fishing
boats/ports, and vineyards they did not need to worry about money. Chile was one of the wealthiest
countries in South America and had money reserved for emergencies. Having money set aside
meant that when disaster struck the Chilean economy only went down for a few months and the
economy still grew the rest of the year. Chile could use its own money to start rebuilding right away

As mentioned earlier Chile had money set aside to deal with disasters, this was a part of Chile's
culture of preparedness. Chile had dealt with earthquakes before the 2010 one and had a non–
corrupt government who fostered this culture of preparedness both within their government and
among the Chilean people through making sure all buildings were up to code, educating people on
what to do in case of an earthquake, and having funding for disaster relief efforts available. This
preparation paid off for Chile when they experienced far less death than typically expected for a
earthquake the size of their 2010 quake. Haiti and Nepal were both quite the opposite, with literally
zero culture of preparedness being fostered by their respective governments. The governments in
both nations were quite corrupt, doing little to make sure building codes were enforced and people
educated on earthquakes. This showed when after each of their quakes both Nepal and Haiti had
extremely high body counts in comparison to the size of the earthquakes that had

This is a result from the economy being built upon neoliberalism ideology and a free market
economy, while being infused with socialist and capitalist principles. Aspects of neoliberalism
include a reliance on local and global free markets, with the state maintaining a minimal role of the
political economy. In fact, based on the 2014 Index of Economic Freedom, Chile has the 7th freest
market in the entire world, ranking ahead of even the United States. These aspects are evident in the
Chilean government's approach to the economy, as they favor foreign investment and international
trade. One way in which the Chilean government has attempted to increase the amount of foreign
investment is through their privatization of Chilean ports, waste–water treatment facilities and
private investment in the construction and operation of domestic infrastructure. The Chilean
government chooses to have a limited role in the regulation of the economy, with the only heavily
regulated aspects consisting of utilities, the banking system, security markets and pension funds.
These free market principles of Chile can be seen as very capitalistic, this is due to the fact that
much of the economic suffering during Allende's rule was because of his socialist policies. A large
part of Chile's economic success is a result of their willingness to participate in capitalistic means.
They are a very favorable foreign investment, considering how supportive the government is of

(Chile Business Forecast Report, 2002) In most cases in the role of individual aspirations the
Chilean negotiator its related with a high level of collectivism, because their culture is generally
group–oriented, their aspirations in pro organization and the mutual benefit, because it would not
rule out the fact that by getting the benefit to the organization may also receive some individual
benefit already economic or some recognition. As Asrani (2010) mentioned business is a serious

more relaxed in subsequent meetings, as they care to know in depth the negotiator, reason why a

The Chilean Press
"The Chilean press has managed to uphold a strong tradition of editorial freedom ever since the
country's first newspaper," (RoughGuides). The media and its median is ever changing and evolving
all over the world, to truly understand any form of media today we must trace it back to its
beginnings. Every country has their own set of laws for the press and we need to understand how
economical and social issues, as well as events, influenced in changing and shaping the media, as
we know it today.
Chile's first newspaper, La Aurora, was published in February 13, 1812. It was published by anti–

began as a four page spread containing a sort of "potpourri" items that ranged from political news to
general interest columns. In June of 1900, El Mercurio, came out with an edition for the country's

The Pros And Cons Of Progress In Latin America
The root of liberalism ideas in America, as in the rest of the world, came from the age of
Enlightenment in France. After the revolution, French intellectuals began new ideas of liberty,
fraternity and equality. These ideas will spread later on in Europe and the Americas during the
Napoleon era. Just after that time, the Latin Americans began their journey to independence in 1808.
The Liberals in Latin America believed in democracy and were against the power of church, social
classes and slavery while the conservative wanted to keep the same systems existing before the
independence. Although the conservatives and the church ruled for decades in Latin America, the

violence and gender–based violence, there are only a few things that the government "approves"
Chilean women doing. Chileans have experienced a leftist government of Salvador Allende to a
military dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet also known as General Pinochet. With all these different
types of changes in the government, why haven 't women be able to fight back and relieve some of
the sexism that is faced on a daily basis? What do women do to fight back and what does it mean
having a women president in office for all the oppressed Chilean women. All these apparent

Fun Facts About Chile

  • 1. Fun Facts About Chile In my paper I will be discussing fun fun facts on Chile. Over time Chile's economical features have changed drastically due to the nation of Chile's background. It's just slightly larger than the state Texas, and achieved independence in 1810. During this time period, Chile's early nationhood was constitutionally driven and peaceful. The resulting stability allowed for a steady development. Chile's economy continues to grow through education, culture, entertainment, and population. Chile is long and narrow but stretches over 2,300 miles north & south. The population was 12,53600 in 1987 and has drastically increased since then. Chile's population in 2010 increased to over 16 million. Being that the population continues to increase over time ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Chile Culture "Chile is a place where God put a little piece of all the rest of the world." (Traditions). A Chilean native said this when talking of all the culture that has concreted together from different ethnicities coming together in their native country. Chile has a fascinating culture and way of life, and the more you learn of it through studying their heritage, life in cities and rural areas, and domestic life, the more captivating it becomes. Although life in Chile has changed in many ways, much of the past heritage is similar to the current heritage. Most citizens older than 14 can read and write. Free public school is provided in Chile, and children must attend 8 years of elementary school. Children are required to wear uniforms, but when they are not in uniforms, they have a very similar style of cloths to our culture's. Music is very big in Chile now, also, like it has been in the past. Much of Chile is Roman ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Before the 1960s, fundos – which were large estates – filled the countryside. Many families worked on fundos, receiving a small wage. But during the 1960s, the government broke up fundos, causing rural citizens to lose their jobs and move to cities, clearing up the countryside. Those left in rural areas enjoy family outings and visiting friends and neighbors for recreation, in view of the fact that the countryside has very little people since fundos have broken up. Citizens who live in cities, however, go to movies, plays, ballets, and operas to entertain themselves. 80% of Chileans live in cities by the coast, a majority of the residents looking for a better life. Many of the poor live in callampas – mushrooms – because they seem to spring up overnight. Even though you may not think the difference in way of life in cities and rural areas doesn't cause major differences, the closer the attention you pay to the details, the more differences you begin to ... • 3. Cultural Analysis : Chile And The United States Crystal Flores Dr. Mo Bahk Comm 304 Cultural Analysis Paper Nov 30, 2016 Chile The United States is my homeland, and a place that I know is very diverse. The United States might be diverse but it still has certain aspects of the culture that apply to everyone. In South America there are twelve countries. Chile is the seventh biggest in the whole country. Chile is a place where it is more modern now, and more modern than any of the other countries. It is consisted of different types of climates, and practices. There are many things that go into a culture and what makes them a unique culture. In this paper I will be discussing different aspects of a culture in Chile. I will go over Collectivism, Masculinity v Femininity, High Power Distance Culture, the Religions, wars, Polychronic culture time orientation, and the Verbal and Nonverbal communications they have. All these things gives Chile their unique culture within South America and even the world. Chiles Culture: In the textbook , "An Introduction to Intercultural Communication: Identities in Global Community," by Fred E. Jandt, the author defines culture as the, "sum total of ways of living, including behavioral norms, linguistic expression, styles of communication, patterns of thinking, and beliefs and values of a group large enough to be self–sustaining and transmitted over the course of generations." • 4. Chilean Culture GLOBAL MULTI–PRODUCTS CHILE THE CHILEAN CULTURE The Chilean culture tends to be an individualistic society in the business environment. They are the most serious people in Latin America. However, they are professional in their behavior in terms of politeness and indirectness. They seem to be workaholics with their routine days of about 12 hours. Trust in the Chilean cultures among each other, remains on the edge. It is difficult for a Chilean to trust another individual despite their race, sex or origin. Teamwork remains a mission in process in Chile. GLOBAL MULTI PRODUCTS ? CHILE Operations began in 1976, with an initial investment of U.S. $ 2 million. Supplies included various manufacturing and service industries such as the health and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Ultimately, the goal of Global Multi–Products Chile is to promote a corporate culture that embraces trust and reliance between different departments. Unfortunately trust takes a long time to build and this compensation solution can be implemented in the short term while developing the necessary trust for the desired corporate culture. NEED FOR ESTABLISHING COMMON GOALS AND PRODUCTIVE CORPORATE CULTURE Problem: Global Multi–Products Chile has gone through many changes and employees feel volatile and lack trust amongst departments. This lack of trust found in the Chilean workplace is hindering Multi–Products ability to compete with large western manufacturers for important clients. Solution: Executive managers need to communicate longer term goals and visions for the organization through small steps and workshops in each of the different departments. Employees of similar status might engage in after work socializing activities. This would permit the development of personal relationships between employees in similar departments perhaps alleviating some of the distrust found at Multi–Products Chile. Another area of importance is the instruction to more senior managers relaying to them the value of working with members in the different sales departments and what ever other departments necessary in order to better serve ... The word "Mexico" is derived from the word "Mexica" (pronounced "Me–shee–ka"), the name for the native group that settled in central Mexico in the early fourteenth century and is best known as the Aztecs. Spanish is the official language of Mexico and is spoken by more than 95 percent of the population. It was introduced through conquest and colonization. Mexican Spanish is rooted in the Spanish of Spain. There are not really any major important differences between the two except for the pronunciation and sounds which are different. • 9. Analysis Of Colonialism By Walcott Colonialism's initial assumption or rather a presumption was to create a civilised and ordered world through establishing dominion over seemingly uncivilised and backwards countries. The colonial enterprise was justified based on the prevalent discourses of savage and primitive natives as reality was hidden due to a severe lack of historical narrative from the natives themselves. The 'white man's burden' is to care for indigenous people who are unable to survive. This becomes a disguise for economic interests in colonisation. An important aspect of colonisation was to 'discover' new lands and territories in order to accumulate them in their world. With the dawn of this age of discovery, new areas were found and the New World was formed. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There is almost no romanticising of history as he depicts the bloody and gruesome truth behind colonial repression. His poems become the tools to appropriate history and rewrite colonialism from the perspective of the victims and not the colonisers. According to Walcott, colonialism caused a separation or division of self in Caribbean writers who have to struggle with the questions of identity. As Shara McCallum remarks: A poem exposes and defines the moment that a particular consciousness and language meet; and Walcott's poems tilt this moment of encounter toward the light in such a way that the gesture itself and the resulting poem often reveal the prismatic nature of identity. (23) Walcott admitted to being in a complex position of being stuck between a certain consciousness of gratitude to the Western world for his cultural and intellectual learning and his allegiance to his African lineage. This position is often represented in his work as it forms a hybrid identity for him. Many critics call this the "schizophrenic situation" of Caribbean identity as they are in between two drastically different cultures. In "A Far Cry from Africa", Walcott overtly addresses his struggle to concretise his idea of identity: I who am poisoned with the blood of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The post–world war époque bought a lot of political and economic uproar to the people of Chile as communist and Christian democrat parties were fighting steadily to claim governmental power. In continuance, during the 1960's, a Christian–democrat majority finally formed the government but was not able to stabilize the nation. The discontent of the people subsided in 1970 with the election of Salvador Allende, who promised full nationalization of all basic industries and banks. He was the first President of the western world that was chosen according to a communist program in a non– Communist country. But opposition and resistance to his socialist policy was strong, both inside and outside the country, as the U.S. supported his Allende's opponents financially and ideology–wise. In 1973 Allende was removed from power in a military coup, where he allegedly committed suicide. Following Allende, the notorious Pinochet regime seized power. Under his rule, the Constitution, Congress and political parties were dissolved. Thousands of political opponents were arrested, executed, tortured or simply "disappeared". The "Bucknell en France" program explores a variety of regions through regular excursions on alternating weekends with the in–residence faculty to local sites of interest, including cathedrals, abbeys and the famous Loire châteaux. The excursions also include visits to different ateliers, or workshops, such as an oil mill, a chocolaterie, or a vannerie. Longer excursions to national sites are also organized, including Paris, the Normandy Beaches, and the Perigord region. On weekends without excursions, I plan to independently travel, perhaps with a friend, to various cultural events, such as an opera or La Foire Gastronomique in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This is a result from the economy being built upon neoliberalism ideology and a free market economy, while being infused with socialist and capitalist principles. Aspects of neoliberalism include a reliance on local and global free markets, with the state maintaining a minimal role of the political economy. In fact, based on the 2014 Index of Economic Freedom, Chile has the 7th freest market in the entire world, ranking ahead of even the United States. These aspects are evident in the Chilean government's approach to the economy, as they favor foreign investment and international trade. One way in which the Chilean government has attempted to increase the amount of foreign investment is through their privatization of Chilean ports, waste–water treatment facilities and private investment in the construction and operation of domestic infrastructure. The Chilean government chooses to have a limited role in the regulation of the economy, with the only heavily regulated aspects consisting of utilities, the banking system, security markets and pension funds. These free market principles of Chile can be seen as very capitalistic, this is due to the fact that much of the economic suffering during Allende's rule was because of his socialist policies. A large part of Chile's economic success is a result of their willingness to participate in capitalistic means. They are a very favorable foreign investment, considering how supportive the government is of foreign investment, which happens to be the basis that the economy thrives on. Foreign countries feel confident in their investments in Chile due to the stability and the easy going nature of the government. The media and its median is ever changing and evolving all over the world, to truly understand any form of media today we must trace it back to its beginnings. Every country has their own set of laws for the press and we need to understand how economical and social issues, as well as events, influenced in changing and shaping the media, as we know it today. Chile's first newspaper, La Aurora, was published in February 13, 1812. It was published by anti– royalist and was considered pro– patriotic and anti–Spanish. It consisted of a single sheet and was published weekly on Thursdays. La Aurora, ended its publication just fourteen months after it began, this was due to a new newspaper hitting the press: El Mercurio de Valparaiso. In June of 1900, El Mercurio, came out with an edition for the country's capital: Santiago's: El Mercurio. Today, El Mercurio, is the longest running newspaper in the Spanish–speaking world (Culture & Customs, p98). After the revolution, French intellectuals began new ideas of liberty, fraternity and equality. These ideas will spread later on in Europe and the Americas during the Napoleon era. Just after that time, the Latin Americans began their journey to independence in 1808. The Liberals in Latin America believed in democracy and were against the power of church, social classes and slavery while the conservative wanted to keep the same systems existing before the independence. Out of those 18 million people, 11 million are just consisted of women population. Ever since, Ferdinand Magellan, the first European to set foot on what is now called Chile, women have been neglected of many of their rights. Facing domestic violence and gender–based violence, there are only a few things that the government "approves" Chilean women doing. Chileans have experienced a leftist government of Salvador Allende to a military dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet also known as General Pinochet. With all these different types of changes in the government, why haven 't women be able to fight back and relieve some of the sexism that is faced on a daily basis? What do women do to fight back and what does it mean having a women president in office for all the oppressed Chilean women. All these apparent disconnects reflect on the tensions and contradictions that frame the lives of many women in Chile today. Chile standardizing ideas about gender strongly influence women's lives, expectations and possibilities. Chileans typically consolidate womanhood with motherhood. Associating women with the home, family and children. The gender expectations that many women take on is dominated with a national discourse of public values and goods. Domestic ...
