1. PROJECT TOPIC Assessing the Indian Hindi Cinema regarding its portrayal of Campus Politics
GROUP V DATE
I. INTRODUCTION
Indian Hindi Cinema aka “Bollywood” has a great impact on its audience. Despite having the image of Indian Hindi cinema to focus more on
commercial films, it is also quite a fact that there is a number of movies made that targets youth for their role and participation in the society.
However, there are instances when we feel a lot more. We have a strong sense of having observed something historic, something that strikes a
deep emotional chord with us. This is when we comeacross films that have a significant social influence. Somemanage to influencea few lives,
while others aid in the speeding up of pending justice, while others cause emotional turmoil and others offer your life a com pletely new course.
Movies like “Rang De Basanti” by Rakesh Omprakash Mehra or Prakash Jha’s “Satyagraha” are one of the examples of that.
Students’ activism, like the work of these films in providing a perspective for the youth to become conscious of their social issues and rights,
works in the same way. The only difference is activism needs your physical efforts to brings the change on ground. Although the student
activism in India dated back in imperial era but in post-independence India, students responded to the critical issues of each period and agitated
in the forefront. They are actively involved in the Naxalite movement, Chipko movement, Anti Emergency Movement, Mandal Agitations and
the very famous JP Andolan.
There are many movies based on campus/student’s activism. Themore recent are “Hazaron Khwaisen Aisi” (2003) by Sudhir Mishra or “Gulaal”
(2009) by Anurag Kashyap that showed how student or campus activism used for larger gains. In relation with this, this proposal is about the
portrayal of the student activism in Indian Hindi cinema. And their impression on the youth involves in the campus activism.
II. Aims and Objectives
1. To analyze the selected Indian Hindi Movies based on campus activism and the way the role of young activist gets featured into the
movie.
2. To understand the opinion and the impression on the young students who are involvein the campus activism.
III. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS
As this research is related to films and the methodology depends entirely on the approach, we will be using a combination of applied &
exploratory research by going through various previously done works. Since due to pandemic, our college premises are not open and we are
not able to experience the campus politics in person so to understand the working manner of activists group, we are willing to go through
various previously done researches on this subject. Also, to make the analysis we have selected some movies based on students/campus politics
in order to critically analyze the context and others point of view. Since it is quite unfair to understand the reliability of the portrayal of the
campus activism in movies without getting opinion of the students’ activists. So, to get their opinion on that we are willing to formulate a set
of questionnaires based on our objectives derived by our earlier study and we will try to contact those who is currently active in this activism.
Afterwards, based on our study, we will assess our all the data collected and will present the outcomes as conclusion.
IV. Expected Outcomes
From this research we expecting the following outcomes:
1. Will get a perspective to critically analyze the films.
2. Will get an overview regarding the working style of an ideal student activist group.
3. Will get an idea that by how far movie on such topic is reliable.
