ASSIGNMENT
ROBOT COMPETITION
BY L KHOZA{215020239}
THE COMPETITION
What if many of the tasks of a teacher could be done by
a robot? What are these tasks?
What if the robot could do some of the tasks of a human
teacher? Which tasks could a robot do better?
What will the role of a teacher then be?
Will teachers still be needed?
TASKS DONE BY TEACHERS
CLASSROOM PREPARATION
 teachers prepare lesson plans before actual teaching
 They consider all activities to take place between the teacher
and learners. Set up the physical environment to cater for
learner’s needs
TEACHING IN THE CLASSROOM
 Teachers personally educate students individually, in small
groups or the entire classroom.
 Break the content and use teaching strategies to ensure that
learners interact with the teacher and the content
TASKS DONE BY TEACHERS continues….
ASSESSMENT
 Teachers give assessment tasks to learners during and after
teaching to check learners’ understanding
GRADING STUDENT WORK
 Teachers evaluate the quality of students’ test papers,
assignments by marking and allocate obtained marks.
ADMINISTRATION
 Teachers attend meetings, take attendance registers and
produce report cards to show students progression
TASKS DONE BY TEACHERS continues….
CARING FOR NEEDS OF LEARNERS
 Teachers pay attention to learners’ needs by helping them with
school work, counselling and help them develop academically
EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
 Teachers extends learners education outside the classroom, help
learners be involved in variety of extracurricular activities and
act as a coach such as in sports, community services
TEACHER/PARENTS MEETING
 Teachers meet with parents periodically to discuss learners’
progress and other issues to help learners’ improvement.
TEACHERS’ TASKS THAT A ROBOT CAN DO BETTER
 Robot can teach better than a human teacher
because it can read the faces of learners and
assess what they have understood and adapt
to suit the learning speed and style of learners.
 Robot teachers can do classroom preparation better than
human teachers by generating new lessons through
navigation of online teaching resources
TEACHERS’ TASKS THAT A ROBOT CAN DO BETTER
 Robot can do after school programs/tutorials
better than human teachers because they have
more time to spend with learners.
 Robot teachers can tutor well because they do not
get tired repeating the same thing.
 Learners can have one-on-one attention with the
robot and it does not find it wrong for learners to
make mistakes.
TEACHERS’ TASKS THAT A ROBOT CAN DO BETTER
Robot teachers can do administration work
better than human teachers.
 Robot will be able to work under pressure
and cannot be stressed with workload
 Robot can take attendance registers well and
can grade students’ work better because
they would not show any bias to any student
THE ROLE OF THE TEACHER
IN THE PRESENCE OF THE ROBOT
 The role of the teacher will be to facilitate the
teaching and learning process
 The teacher will ensure that the learners
understand the robot and the level of language
the robot uses
 The teachers’ role will be to ensure that learners
are not disrupting the lesson by ensuring that
there is discipline and respect for the robot
Monitor the classroom to ensure that learners
ask questions related to the lesson and not
playing with the robot
Adjust the online teaching resources
generated by the robot to suit all learners’
needs as the teacher knows each learner
personally
For the after school programs/tutorials, the
role of the teacher will be to encourage
/motivate learners to attend and tell them the
importance of the tutorials
 The robot will do the grading of students’ work and the
role of the teacher will be to give feedback and explain
why learners obtained the marks they obtained and
analyze each question on the assessment task together
with learners
 Teachers will serve as mentors and coaches for the
learners and cater for their social and educational
needs.
WILL TEACHERS STILL BE NEEDED?
Even with the increasing technology in the
education system, teachers will still be needed
The Artificial Intelligence- robot can do many tasks
but it cannot replace the teacher with his/her skills
and abilities
There are other vital parts that the robot cannot do
well which requires teachers as human beings such
as personal values of empathy and caring.
 Teachers are needed to sympathize with learners apart
from school work
 Learners bring social issues which needs human caring,
counselling and financial support whereas the robot
cannot provide these.
 Teachers are needed to facilitate the teaching and
learning process, mentoring and coaching learners
 Teachers are needed to enforce classroom rules
and to deal with disciplinary problems and also
motivate unmotivated learners
 Teachers at schools serve as parents to learners
and robot cannot meet this learners’ needs
 Teachers are needed for social interaction with
learners to support learners and meet their social
needs and robot cannot meet these.
 Teachers are needed to explain and discuss clear with
parents about learners’ performance and behavior
during parents meeting,
 Teachers and some parents share the same values and
interests and it will be easy to interact with them and
understand each other,
 Teachers are needed more in this regard because
robots cannot do it and parents will find it hard to
speak to a machine as some parents are old and
uneducated
 Learners with language barrier and disabilities can
only be assisted by a human teacher and robots
are fixed to a certain artificial intelligence
 Teachers are needed always, the robot cannot
replace the teacher completely,
 Instead the human teacher and the robot have to
divide duties for one another
TEACHERS PLAY A BIG ROLE IN EXTRA-
CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
