Saudi and China seek to block anti-fossil fuel language in UN
climate deal
By Reuters + NewBase
China and Saudi Arabia are among a group of countries seeking to prevent the UN climate deal in
Scotland from including language that opposes fossil fuel subsidies, according to two sources close
to the negotiations.
The issue of subsidies for oil, gas, and coal has become a major sticking point at the summit, where
negotiators have already blown past a Friday deadline to strike an agreement aimed at keeping
alive a goal to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
Existing drafts of the agreement negotiated over the past two weeks would request that
governments unwind public financial support for fossil fuels, which scientists say are the primary
drivers of human-caused climate change.
U.S. special climate envoy John Kerry told the summit on Friday that trying to curb global warming
while governments spend hundreds of billions of dollars supporting the fuels that cause it was "a
definition of insanity".
Other Western nations, including members of the European Union and Britain, are also pushing to
keep the reference to removing fossil fuels subsidies. The two sources, who asked not to be named
because they are not authorized to speak publicly about the talks, said China and Saudi Arabia
were pushing to have the language removed.
Efforts to reach the Saudi and Chinese delegations Friday evening were unsuccessful. China, the
world’s top emitter of greenhouse gases, is a significant oil and coal producer.

Earlier this week, China announced a joint agreement with the United States at the Glasgow summit
to ramp up its ambitions to fight climate change, including by accelerating its phase down of coal
this decade and by curbing methane emissions.
Saudi Arabia is a major crude producer and the defacto head of the Organisation of the Petroleum
Exporting Countries.
Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman Al-Saud told the conference earlier this week
that a deal to fight climate change should not target any one particular source of energy, arguing
emissions can be brought down by other means.
Key COP26 stories
Six major automakers on Wednesday will commit to phasing out the production of fossil-fuel
vehicles around the world by 2040, the British government said in a statement. Volvo, Ford, General
Motors, Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar Land Rover and China's BYD are set to sign the pledge at climate
talks in Glasgow.
Central bankers must force the
world's banks to set short-term
targets to cut carbon
emissions from their loan
books or the sector's net-zero
pledges will simply be
"greenwashing", billionaire
hedge fund investor Chris
Hohn told Reuters. Speaking
on the sidelines of COP26,
Hohn - a major financial backer
of climate-focused non-
governmental organizations -
said annual emissions cuts of
7% were needed to ensure
global targets were hit.
On Wednesday, a raft of announcements relating to the greening of transportation are expected at
COP26. Emissions from the transportation sector, including vehicles, airplanes, trains and ships,
have more than doubled since 1970. The sector now accounts for about 24% of global emissions.
2. UN climate talks draft asks for tougher emissions pledges by next year
The British hosts of the UN climate summit in Glasgow have proposed that countries raise their
ambitions to slash greenhouse gas emissions by the end of 2022 in a draft political decision that
nations will negotiate over the final days of the summit.
The proposal underscores the concerns of climate experts and activists that there is a yawning gap
between current national pledges and the kinds of cuts required to keep the world from tilting into a
full-blown climate crisis.
The UK's COP26 president, Alok Sharma, had said on Tuesday that negotiators have a "mountain
to climb" to come up with a deal sufficient to address the threat from global warming.
The first draft of the COP26 political decision, which the United Nations released on Wednesday
morning, asks countries to "revisit and strengthen the 2030 targets in their nationally determined
contributions, as necessary to align with the Paris Agreement temperature goal by the end of 2022".

Under the 2015 Paris Agreement, countries agreed to limit global warming to well below 2.0 degrees
Celsius above pre-industrial levels and try to cap it at 1.5C above pre-industrial levels.
The draft also urged countries to phase out coal, oil and gas subsidies - taking direct aim at the
burning of coal, oil and gas that produces carbon dioxide, the primary contributor to manmade
climate change. It did not set a fixed date for phasing them out.
Diplomats from the nearly 200 countries represented at COP26 sit down on Wednesday to negotiate
a final text they are all willing to sign when the summit ends this weekend.
Environmental group Greenpeace slammed the draft as inadequate: "This draft deal is not a plan to
solve the climate crisis, it’s an agreement that we’ll all cross our fingers and hope for the best. It’s a
polite request that countries maybe, possibly, do more next year."
2. World on track for 2.4C of global warming after latest pledges - analysts
The latest national pledges submitted to the UN climate conference in Glasgow to tackle climate
change this decade would lead to around 2.4C of global warming this century, far above safe levels,
analysts said on Tuesday.
The research coalition Climate Action Tracker (CAT) said the promises by countries attending the
conference to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 would still allow the Earth to heat up far
beyond the United Nations target by 2100.
"Even with all new Glasgow
pledges for 2030, we will emit
roughly twice as much in 2030 as
required for 1.5C," it said, referring
to the aspirational goal for warming
since pre-industrial levels set down
in the 2015 Paris Agreement.
Researchers have outlined a
mismatch between COP26
pledges and climate action
required.
Image: Climate Action Tracker
"It’s all very well for leaders to claim
they have a net-zero target, but if
they have no plans as to how to get
there, and their 2030 targets are as
low as so many of them are, then
frankly, these 'net-zero' targets are
just lip service to real climate
action," said Bill Hare, CEO of
Climate Analytics, one of the
organizations behind the CAT.
Under "business as usual", without any of the new pledges, the world would warm up by 2.7C this
century, CAT said. Scientists have said global greenhouse gas emissions - mostly the carbon
dioxide emitted by burning coal, oil and gas - must fall 45% by 2030 from 2010 levels, and reach
net zero by 2050.

UAE: Adipec 2021 opens; to focus on major energy , face to face
NewBase
The Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference (Adipec), the global energy
industry's largest, most important and influential event, has returned to Abu Dhabi to offer face-to-
face meetings for the energy industry following the challenges of Covid-19.
Held under the patronage of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and
hosted by the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc), this year's Adipec runs from November 15
to 18, a WAM report said.
Taking place immediately after COP26, Adipec 2021 is the first global energy forum to examine the
key outcomes of the UN climate meeting and how they will shape future policy and business
environments within the energy industry.
Adipec is hosting a series of conferences providing strategic and technical insights, including the
Adipec 2021 Strategic Conference featuring more than 1,000 expert speakers, including over 160
Ministers, CEOs, and policy influencers, who will participate in over 160 conference sessions.
Through a series of strategic panels, leadership interviews, and keynote addresses, global industry
leaders will assess the evolving energy landscape, shedding light on emerging energy sector trends
and exploring crucial industry topics.
"The Strategic Conference at Adipec 2021 will enhance the understanding of the trends which are
transforming the energy landscape as we take stock of the outcomes from COP26 and explore how,
as an industry, we can meet the demand for more energy, but with fewer emissions.
The event provides an unparalleled opportunity for industry leaders, policy makers, and innovators
to connect and advance the strategies needed to navigate the changing energy world. We will see
new products launched, new partnerships formed, and billions of dollars of investment announced,
as together we chart the next phase of sustainable growth for our industry," said Tayba Al Hashemi,
CEO of Adnoc Sour Gas and Adipec 2021 Chair.
The Strategic Conference is welcoming at least 32 global energy ministers, who will take to the

Adipec 2021: Oil and gas industry needs more than $600bn in annual investment until 2030
The global oil and gas industry requires more than $600 billion of investment annually to keep up
with the growing demand for energy even as the world transitions to cleaner forms of energy,
according to the managing director and group chief executive of Adnoc.
"After almost a decade of underinvestment in our industry, the world has sleepwalked into a supply
crunch. It is time to wake up," said Dr Sultan Al Jaber, who is also Minister of Industry and Advanced
Technology.
He cautioned however that countries cannot afford to "simply unplug" from conventional fuels amid
ongoing efforts to transition the world economy away from fossil fuels.
"We cannot just flip a switch," he told the Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and
Conference (Adipec).

"As economies bounce back from the Covid-19 pandemic, at the fastest rate in two years, demand
has outpaced supply. The oil and gas industry will have to invest over $600bn every year ... until
2030 ... just to keep up with expected demand," he added.
The state oil producer plans to significantly increase its investment in hydrocarbons and will raise
its output capacity to 5 million barrels per day by 2030. Oil prices are currently trading at multi-year
highs, supported by the rebound in the global economy after extended periods of lockdown due to
Covid-19.
The scarcity of gas and coal supplies and rising consumption in India and China have led to a
sustained rally in the prices for oil and gas.
Brent, the international benchmark under which two thirds of the world's crude is traded, was down
0.55 per cent to trade at $81.72 a barrel at 11.53am UAE time. West Texas Intermediate, which
tracks US crude grades, was down 0.58 per cent at $80.32 a barrel.
Dr Al Jaber affirmed Opec's third-largest producer's plans for higher oil and gas output. At the same
time, we are constantly innovating to further reduce our carbon intensity," he said
"We were the first company to bring carbon capture and storage to the region, and we are expanding
our capacity from 800 thousand tonnes of carbon dioxide per year to 5 million," he said.
The UAE announced plans to reach net zero emissions by 2050 before Cop26, which was held in
Glasgow, Scotland. The country will also become the first Gulf Arab nation to host the Cop summit
in 2023.
In line with its initiative to decarbonise, the
UAE plans to invest $160bn in clean and
renewable energy sources in the next three
decades. "Rewiring the energy system is a
multi-trillion-dollar business opportunity that
is good for the climate, good for humanity
and good for economic growth," Dr Al Jaber
told Adipec.
"We need Solutions that are both pro-
climate and pro-growth. We must invest in
the energy that the world needs today, while
we create the energy system of tomorrow."
The oil and gas industry should play a
pivotal role in facilitating this transition, with
its "knowledge and skills", he added.
In October, Adnoc said it would meet up to 100 per cent of its power requirements from solar and
nuclear sources after signing an agreement with the Emirates Water and Electricity Company, in
line with the UAE's recent pledge to reach net zero by the middle of the century.
It is set to become the first oil and gas company in the world to completely decarbonise its electric
grid at scale.
The supply of clean power to Adnoc will begin in January 2022. The initiative was unveiled by Sheikh
Khaled bin Mohamed, a member of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, chairman of the Abu Dhabi
Executive Office and chairman of the executive committee of Adnoc's board of directors.
The deal will also lock in a long-term renewable electricity off-take agreement for Ewec.

Dr Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber said: “Adnoc and Borealis’ significant investment in the fourth expansion
of Borouge ensures the long-term and sustainable supply of core materials to critical sectors vital
to both the UAE and global economy.
This expansion will see Borouge become the world’s largest single-site polyolefin complex, as it
continues to play an integral role in the development of TA’ZIZ, enhancing local industrial supply
chains and boosting In-Country Value opportunities.
“Today’s announcement underlines the continued attractiveness of Abu Dhabi and the UAE as a
world-leading investment and partnership destination and underpins the robust value offering from
our downstream, industry and petrochemicals sector to key global industry partners and investors.”
Scheduled to be operational by the end of
2025, Adnoc will supply Borouge 4 feedstock.
Thomas Gangl commented: “We are very
proud of Borouge and our long-standing
partnership with Adnoc. It is with great
pleasure that we continue the expansion of
our successful partnership in Borouge.
Borouge is the key vehicle that enables us to
serve the growing customer needs across
the Middle East and Asian markets with
future-oriented and differentiated solutions based on Borstar, Borealis’ proprietary state-of-the-art
technology.”
Borouge 4 will have an industry-leading focus on sustainability leveraging the capabilities of both
shareholders. The facility will utilize Borealis’ proprietary Borstar technology, to produce a product
portfolio focused on durable applications for energy, infrastructure, advanced packaging, and
agriculture sectors.
This unique technology, in combination with hexene co-monomer, will enable the production of
advanced packaging grades with up to 50% recycled polyethylene content.
Subject to an in-depth study, a Carbon Capture unit that would reduce CO2 emissions by 80% could
also be operational in time for Borouge 4’s start-up.
The facility is also designed to capitalize on Adnoc’s recent initiatives on clean energy,
decarbonising its power supply through access to Abu Dhabi’s clean power sources. These
initiatives are aligned with the UAE Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative.
The new Borouge 4 facility covers an area equivalent to almost 500 football pitches, or over three
times the size of Al Maryah Island in Abu Dhabi, will produce enough polyolefins annually to make
enough pipes to supply water to 35 million households. Borouge’s value-add materials are used to
manufacture a diverse range of products including industrial-grade pipes, cables, films and personal
protective equipment.
The first Borouge facility, producing 450,000 tons of polyethylene per annum was commissioned in
2001. Borouge 2 and Borouge 3 took capacity to 2 million tons and 4.5 million tons of polyethylene
and polypropylene per annum in 2010 and 2014 respectively. Borouge 4 will boost the company’s
annual polyolefin production to 6.4 million tons, making Borouge the world’s largest single-site
polyolefin facility.

Mozambique: Coral-Sul FLNG to sail to Rovuma basin offshore
Source: Eni
Eni as Delegated Operator and on behalf of its Area 4 Partners (ExxonMobil, CNPC, GALP, KOGAS
and ENH) held the naming and sail away ceremony of the Coral-Sul FLNG, the first floating LNG
facility ever to be deployed in the deep waters of the African continent.
The event took place at Samsung Heavy Industries shipyard in Geoje, South Korea, in the presence
of H.E. Filipe Jacinto Nyusi, President of the Republic of Mozambique, and H.E. Moon Jae-in,
President of the Republic of Korea.
The FLNG, which is part of the Coral South Project, will be now towed and moored at its operating
site in the Rovuma basin offshore Mozambique. Production startup is expected in the second half
of 2022, and it will contribute to increase gas availability in a tight market.
Coral South Project achieved Final Investment Decision in 2017, only 36 months after the last
appraisal well. FLNG fabrication and construction activities started in 2018 and were completed on
cost and on time, despite the pandemic.
While performing the construction activities in Korea, several significant activities were undertaken
in Mozambique, with full support from the Mozambican Authorities, including the ultra-deep water
(2000m wd) drilling and completion campaign that involved the highest technological and
operational skills and equipment.
The Coral South Project will generate significant Government take for the Country while creating
more than 800 new jobs during the operation period.
Stefano Maione, Director Development, Operations & Energy Efficiency at Eni, said: 'The Coral Sul
FLNG is a world-class feat of engineering, construction know-how and technology, suited to kick-
off the development of Mozambique’s world-class resources.

The project fits integrally with and within the Eni’s energy transition strategy, as we move towards
a decarbonised energy future, in which gas is playing an essential and transitional role'.
Coral-Sul FLNG has implemented an energy optimization approach, integrated in the design via a
systematic analysis of energy efficiency improvements. These include among others, zero flaring
during normal operations, use of thermal efficient aero-derivative gas turbines for refrigerant
compressors and power generation, use of Dry Low NOx technology to reduce NOx emission and
waste heat recovery systems for gas processing.
About Coral Sul FLNG
The Coral Sul FLNG is 432 meters long and 66 meters wide, weighs around 220,000 tons and has
the capacity to accommodate up to 350 people in its eight-story Living Quarter module. Once the
FLNG facility will be in place, the installation campaign will begin, including mooring and hook-up
operations at a water-depth of around 2,000 meters by means of 20 mooring lines that totally weight
9,000 tons.
FLNG treatment and liquefaction installation has a gas liquefaction capacity of 3.4 million tons per
year (MTPA) and will put in production 450 billion cubic meters of gas from the giant Coral reservoir,
located in the offshore Rovuma Basin.

UK coal power stations paid double to keep electricity flowing as
wind drops. NewBase + Bloomberg
Britain’s last remaining coal power stations are being paid record sums to supply power as one of
the least windy summers since 1961 kept wind power low. The UK’s electricity system operator
ESO spent £86m last week, including making payments to fossil fuel power stations, The Guardian
reported.
That included payments of up to £4,000 per megawatt-hour for fossil fuel power stations to generate
electricity at short notice. The West Burton plant in Nottingham was among those fired up.
A National Grid spokesman said, “In balancing the electricity system, we take actions in economical
order and not on the basis of generation type.
“Depending on system conditions, some power sources may be better at meeting a balancing
requirement than others, so the most cost-effective solution to ensure safe, secure system operation
will be sought.”
Britain regularly goes for long stretches without using coal power, but coal power plants are kept on
for when weather means it’s difficult to generate power from wind. This summer, Britain brought
forward its target to end the use of coal in electricity generation by a year to October 2024.

Ahead of hosting the UN's Climate Change Conference (COP26) in November, Britain has stepped
up its efforts to encourage other nations to cut emissions more quickly.
Experts believe ending the use of coal, the most carbon-intensive fossil fuel, for power could play a
major part in limiting the modern-day rise in global temperatures to 1.5C, a key international target.
Britain, home to the world's first coal-fuelled power plant in the 1880s, was largely reliant on the
fossil fuel for electricity for the following century, but last year reduced its use of coal in the power
sector to less than 2% of the electricity mix.
That compares with around 25% five years ago, and is far below the levels seen in some
countries.China generated 53% of the world's total coal-fired power in 2020, Ember, an energy and
climate research group, found.
In 2017, more than a million people died worldwide due to burning fossil fuels, with half the deaths
caused by coal, a study found this summer. Researchers from around the world analysed the
health effects of air pollution (and where it was coming from) in 200 countries.
The researchers say that pollution from cars and industry is only part of the problem as tiny PM2.5
particles – which can go into people’s lungs – can also make people ill if they cook every night on a
stove.
Professor Randall Martin of Washington University in St Louis said: "PM2.5 is the world's leading
environmental risk factor for mortality. Our key objective is to understand its sources.”
Researchers worked with data sources from around the world to analyse different sources of air
pollution - from energy production to burning gas to dust storms.
Erin McDuffie, a visiting research associate, said the central question is: "How many deaths are
attributable to exposure to air pollution from specific sources?"

Oil prices bounce back on tight inventories, demand worries limit gains
Reuters + NewBase
Oil rebounded from a weak start on Tuesday as worries over tight inventories underpinned prices,
although optimism was limited by fears over demand following a pickup in COVID-19 cases in
Europe.
Brent futures added 35 cents, or 0.43%, to $83.40 a barrel, as of 10.21 GMT, while U.S. West Texas
Intermediate (WTI) crude climbed 29 cents, or 0.36%, to $81.18 a barrel.
“At these oil prices, supply is going to grow but it might take six months and inventories have come
down so low. We don’t have a safety margin,” said Tony Nunan, a Tokyo-based senior risk manager
at Mitsubishi Corp.

“We have very low inventory levels and if we have a very cold winter and OPEC is still sluggish at
increasing supplies that could push oil prices up.” Global oil markets remain very tight and heavily
backwardated as demand returns to pre-pandemic levels, Trafigura’s Chief Executive Officer
Jeremy Weir said.
“We are seeing a very, very tight oil market but it’s not artificially tight because of what OPEC is
doing. Demand is there,” Weir said at the FT Commodities Asia Summit.
Russian crude grades sold in Asia fetched the highest spot premiums in 22 months for cargoes
loading in January, extending gains for a fourth straight month as robust demand and firm refining
margins support prices, trade sources said on Tuesday.
Still, worries about demand destruction due to the COVID-19 pandemic weighed.
Europe has again become the epicentre of the COVID-19 pandemic, prompting some governments
to consider re-imposing lockdowns, while China is battling the spread of its biggest outbreak caused
by the Delta variant.
The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) last week cut its world oil demand
forecast for the fourth quarter by 330,000 barrels per day (bpd) from last month’s forecast, as high
energy prices hampered economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Fears of declining demand come as supplies are expected to rise.
Last week, U.S. energy firms added oil and natural gas rigs for a third week in a row, encouraged
by a 65% increase in U.S. crude prices so far this year.
U.S. shale production in December is expected to reach pre-pandemic levels of 8.68 million barrels
a day, according to Rystad Energy.
Money managers raised their net long U.S. crude futures and options positions in the week to Nov.
9, the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) said on Monday. The speculator group
raised its futures and options position in New York and London by 11,328 contracts to 353,807
during the period.

EcoWASTE to focus on sustainable waste management
NewBase
EcoWASTE Exhibition & Forum will focus on new and sustainable approaches to waste
management and the benefits from a circular economy to the public purse, society and
environment.
A recent study published in Entrepreneur magazine, estimates $7 billion in new revenue
opportunities from recycling for cities and recyclers, 250–350 million metric tonnes less carbon
dioxide (CO2) in the air, 80 million tonnes of material recovered from residential single-stream
recycling and 30 million more households with access to convenient recycling.
Locally, targets set by the UAE include treating 75% of municipal solid waste by 2025 and 85% by
2035, as well as reducing municipal solid waste generation to 1.4 kg per person per day by the year
2025. The UAE government’s moves are at the forefront of a global trend that saw many countries
turn to waste management for the creation of new value chains, and as a steppingstone toward the
knowledge economy.
It is against this backdrop that the Middle East’s leading business and networking event for
sustainable waste management, the EcoWASTE Exhibition & Forum, returns to Abu Dhabi, UAE

for its 8th edition between January 17 and 19, 2022, that will be co-located with the World Future
Energy Summit.
Held in partnership with Abu Dhabi Waste Management Center – Tadweer as part of Abu Dhabi
Sustainability Week 2022, the global event will be critical to the resumption of focus on the circular
economy model and the means necessary to get there – two global priorities that became more
urgent in the aftermath of recent developments, as well as a purposeful effort within the larger
framework of environmental action.
EcoWASTE will bring together the
Middle East and North Africa
region’s most prominent waste
management stakeholders, with
investors, entrepreneurs, innovators
and technology providers standing
to make most gains from the
business, sponsorship and
partnership opportunities the
exhibition is forecasted to create.
The event will examine how recent
world events have resulted in new
attitudes to waste management, the
benefits of reducing, reusing and
recycling, and evolving approaches to waste. A special focus will be dedicated to realistic ways in
which to reduce single-use plastic and how technology and innovation will increasingly impact the
decisions taken within the industry.
Speaking about the event, Dr Salem Khalfan Al Kaabi, Director General, Tadweer, said:
“EcoWASTE plays a vital role in the waste management industry, with a platform that has quickly
become essential for public and private enterprises alike. This is the place to go to explore new
solutions in sustainable waste management, forge partnerships, learn from successful programmes
and examine the latest know-how."
“The event has become a solid foundation for proactive initiatives in waste management as well as
other aspects of sustainable development in Abu Dhabi, and it continues to assume its role as an
incubator for action, partnerships and ventures aiming to bolster Abu Dhabi’s economy and connect
with other successful initiatives around the world,” he added.
Grant Tuchten, Group Event Director of the World Future Energy Summit said: "EcoWASTE is the
waste management industry's central platform, where all stakeholders come together to sharpen
global waste management efforts with innovative technology, advances in engineering, and
inspiring ideas. It is at EcoWASTE that future developments and business partnerships are born,”
he concluded.
The EcoWASTE Exhibition will host global technology innovators including Dulevo, Green
Mountains, Thor ME and Al Shirawy Group, Terberg RosRoca, German Distribution, Gorica Group
and MG Recycling. The EcoWASTE Forum will host industry experts including Ronald Richa, GM
Plastic Recycling, Veolia – who will speak on packaging and manufacturing within the circular
economy; Pablo Arribere Jimenez, Senior Director - Operational Excellence & Innovation, Bee’ah

that will present on mapping waste management services using technology; and Youssef Chehade,
Managing Partner, Ecyclex who will speak on recycling electronic waste.
ELDAN Recycling, an industry-leading developer of equipment for downsizing and recycling scrap
and waste, has confirmed its attendance of the upcoming edition of EcoWASTE. CEO Toni Reftman
said:
"The Middle East is arguably the world's biggest market for waste management and recycling, and
the leading manufacturers of this industry know that Abu Dhabi is the place to go for serious, pro-
environment action. We're excited to showcase our solutions before the region's waste
management community and to forge closer ties with industry stakeholders present at the event."
Echoing this sentiment, Marc Jennings, CEO of the market-leading wet waste processing solutions
developer CDE Group, said: "This is one event we are truly looking forward to next year within the
MEA region.
EcoWASTE is the biggest event in the industry, and the place where stakeholders of waste
management meet, network, and explore new solutions. We believe we're bringing something
unique to waste management systems. Every day, we empower our customers globally to transform
waste into valuable resources, laying the foundations for the circular economy, and so we're looking
forward to raising further awareness and showcasing our expertise to the market's biggest buyers
in the MEA region."
On completion, the plant will have the potential to transform up to 4 million tonnes of Municipal Solid
Waste (MSW) every year into Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), said a statement from the company.
The SAF produced from the WtF plant in Abu Dhabi would be compliant to International Civil
Aviation Organisation’s (ICAO) standards for decarbonisation of the aviation sector. The plant will
help Abu Dhabi to divert 75 percent of municipal waste away from landfills, it stated.

This plant will significantly contribute to the UAE’s actions on Climate Change. The UAE is the host
of 28th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP28), it added.
According to Tadweer, the Waste-to-SAF plant is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by about 1
million tonnes annually – equivalent to the removal of more than 200,000 cars from the road.
"This agreement is aligned with Tadweer’s continued efforts to divert waste from landfills and
harness technological innovations that are commercially viable to address the challenges posed by
the treatment of large volume of waste," said its Director General Dr Salem Al Kaabi.
Etihad Airways said it would be entering into a long-term SAF offtake agreement with Tadweer as
the provider of feedstock waste under a long-term waste supply agreement.
Private sector participants would be invited to submit proposals to design, build, finance, operate
and maintain the facilities, which will use advanced commercially proven technology to convert
municipal solid waste into Sustainable Aviation Fuel, he stated.
Al Kaabi said: "In working closely with our partners, Tadweer is proud to steer Abu Dhabi’s
sustainability agenda through the implementation of an integrated, world-class waste management
system that ensures a cleaner and more sustainable environment for present and future
generations."
"This collaboration between Tadweer and Etihad Airways reinforces Abu Dhabi’s, and the broader
UAE’s, commitment to net-zero targets that puts UAE on a credible path to zero out emissions by
mid-century. We look forward to capitalising on further opportunities that utilise the most efficient
waste-management technologies and drive our nation’s clean development ambitions," he stated.
Etihad Aviation Group COO Mohammad Al Bulooki said: "To truly make sustainability a reality in
aviation we need to look at the biggest contributing factor, fuel, where sustainable aviation fuel is
required to meet the net zero target."
"Through this agreement, four
million tonnes of waste will be
converted into 140 million
gallons of SAF, representing a
significant portion of our annual
fuel requirement. Today’s
collaboration between Tadweer
and Etihad Airways is just the
first step towards a much
broader engagement within
Abu Dhabi to create a hub for
producing SAF and synfuels,"
he added.

The issue of subsidies for oil, gas, and coal has become a major sticking point at the summit, where negotiators have already blown past a Friday deadline to strike an agreement aimed at keeping alive a goal to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. Existing drafts of the agreement negotiated over the past two weeks would request that governments unwind public financial support for fossil fuels, which scientists say are the primary drivers of human-caused climate change. U.S. special climate envoy John Kerry told the summit on Friday that trying to curb global warming while governments spend hundreds of billions of dollars supporting the fuels that cause it was "a definition of insanity". Other Western nations, including members of the European Union and Britain, are also pushing to keep the reference to removing fossil fuels subsidies. The two sources, who asked not to be named because they are not authorized to speak publicly about the talks, said China and Saudi Arabia were pushing to have the language removed. Efforts to reach the Saudi and Chinese delegations Friday evening were unsuccessful. China, the world’s top emitter of greenhouse gases, is a significant oil and coal producer.

Page 2 Earlier this week, China announced a joint agreement with the United States at the Glasgow summit to ramp up its ambitions to fight climate change, including by accelerating its phase down of coal this decade and by curbing methane emissions. Saudi Arabia is a major crude producer and the defacto head of the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries. Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman Al-Saud told the conference earlier this week that a deal to fight climate change should not target any one particular source of energy, arguing emissions can be brought down by other means. Key COP26 stories Six major automakers on Wednesday will commit to phasing out the production of fossil-fuel vehicles around the world by 2040, the British government said in a statement. Volvo, Ford, General Motors, Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar Land Rover and China's BYD are set to sign the pledge at climate talks in Glasgow. Central bankers must force the world's banks to set short-term targets to cut carbon emissions from their loan books or the sector's net-zero pledges will simply be "greenwashing", billionaire hedge fund investor Chris Hohn told Reuters. Speaking on the sidelines of COP26, Hohn - a major financial backer of climate-focused non- governmental organizations - said annual emissions cuts of 7% were needed to ensure global targets were hit. On Wednesday, a raft of announcements relating to the greening of transportation are expected at COP26. Emissions from the transportation sector, including vehicles, airplanes, trains and ships, have more than doubled since 1970. The sector now accounts for about 24% of global emissions. 2. UN climate talks draft asks for tougher emissions pledges by next year The British hosts of the UN climate summit in Glasgow have proposed that countries raise their ambitions to slash greenhouse gas emissions by the end of 2022 in a draft political decision that nations will negotiate over the final days of the summit. The proposal underscores the concerns of climate experts and activists that there is a yawning gap between current national pledges and the kinds of cuts required to keep the world from tilting into a full-blown climate crisis. The UK's COP26 president, Alok Sharma, had said on Tuesday that negotiators have a "mountain to climb" to come up with a deal sufficient to address the threat from global warming. The first draft of the COP26 political decision, which the United Nations released on Wednesday morning, asks countries to "revisit and strengthen the 2030 targets in their nationally determined contributions, as necessary to align with the Paris Agreement temperature goal by the end of 2022".

Page 3 Under the 2015 Paris Agreement, countries agreed to limit global warming to well below 2.0 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and try to cap it at 1.5C above pre-industrial levels. The draft also urged countries to phase out coal, oil and gas subsidies - taking direct aim at the burning of coal, oil and gas that produces carbon dioxide, the primary contributor to manmade climate change. It did not set a fixed date for phasing them out. Diplomats from the nearly 200 countries represented at COP26 sit down on Wednesday to negotiate a final text they are all willing to sign when the summit ends this weekend. Environmental group Greenpeace slammed the draft as inadequate: "This draft deal is not a plan to solve the climate crisis, it’s an agreement that we’ll all cross our fingers and hope for the best. It’s a polite request that countries maybe, possibly, do more next year." 2. World on track for 2.4C of global warming after latest pledges - analysts The latest national pledges submitted to the UN climate conference in Glasgow to tackle climate change this decade would lead to around 2.4C of global warming this century, far above safe levels, analysts said on Tuesday. The research coalition Climate Action Tracker (CAT) said the promises by countries attending the conference to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 would still allow the Earth to heat up far beyond the United Nations target by 2100. "Even with all new Glasgow pledges for 2030, we will emit roughly twice as much in 2030 as required for 1.5C," it said, referring to the aspirational goal for warming since pre-industrial levels set down in the 2015 Paris Agreement. Researchers have outlined a mismatch between COP26 pledges and climate action required. Image: Climate Action Tracker "It’s all very well for leaders to claim they have a net-zero target, but if they have no plans as to how to get there, and their 2030 targets are as low as so many of them are, then frankly, these 'net-zero' targets are just lip service to real climate action," said Bill Hare, CEO of Climate Analytics, one of the organizations behind the CAT. Under "business as usual", without any of the new pledges, the world would warm up by 2.7C this century, CAT said. Scientists have said global greenhouse gas emissions - mostly the carbon dioxide emitted by burning coal, oil and gas - must fall 45% by 2030 from 2010 levels, and reach net zero by 2050.

Page 4 UAE: Adipec 2021 opens; to focus on major energy , face to face NewBase The Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference (Adipec), the global energy industry's largest, most important and influential event, has returned to Abu Dhabi to offer face-to- face meetings for the energy industry following the challenges of Covid-19. Held under the patronage of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and hosted by the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc), this year's Adipec runs from November 15 to 18, a WAM report said. Taking place immediately after COP26, Adipec 2021 is the first global energy forum to examine the key outcomes of the UN climate meeting and how they will shape future policy and business environments within the energy industry. Adipec is hosting a series of conferences providing strategic and technical insights, including the Adipec 2021 Strategic Conference featuring more than 1,000 expert speakers, including over 160 Ministers, CEOs, and policy influencers, who will participate in over 160 conference sessions. Through a series of strategic panels, leadership interviews, and keynote addresses, global industry leaders will assess the evolving energy landscape, shedding light on emerging energy sector trends and exploring crucial industry topics. "The Strategic Conference at Adipec 2021 will enhance the understanding of the trends which are transforming the energy landscape as we take stock of the outcomes from COP26 and explore how, as an industry, we can meet the demand for more energy, but with fewer emissions. The event provides an unparalleled opportunity for industry leaders, policy makers, and innovators to connect and advance the strategies needed to navigate the changing energy world. We will see new products launched, new partnerships formed, and billions of dollars of investment announced, as together we chart the next phase of sustainable growth for our industry," said Tayba Al Hashemi, CEO of Adnoc Sour Gas and Adipec 2021 Chair. The Strategic Conference is welcoming at least 32 global energy ministers, who will take to the stage to discuss the most pertinent topics in the energy industry.

However, our primary commitment is, of course, to the health and safety of our attendees, which is why we have put in place our dmg events ‘All Secure’ framework, which provides a detailed set of enhanced health and safety measures that are practical, effective and widely considered to be best practice for the events industry," added Christopher Hudson, President of dmg events, organisers of Adipec Adipec 2021: Oil and gas industry needs more than $600bn in annual investment until 2030 The global oil and gas industry requires more than $600 billion of investment annually to keep up with the growing demand for energy even as the world transitions to cleaner forms of energy, according to the managing director and group chief executive of Adnoc. "After almost a decade of underinvestment in our industry, the world has sleepwalked into a supply crunch. It is time to wake up," said Dr Sultan Al Jaber, who is also Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology. He cautioned however that countries cannot afford to "simply unplug" from conventional fuels amid ongoing efforts to transition the world economy away from fossil fuels. "We cannot just flip a switch," he told the Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference (Adipec).

Page 6 "As economies bounce back from the Covid-19 pandemic, at the fastest rate in two years, demand has outpaced supply. The oil and gas industry will have to invest over $600bn every year ... until 2030 ... just to keep up with expected demand," he added. The state oil producer plans to significantly increase its investment in hydrocarbons and will raise its output capacity to 5 million barrels per day by 2030. Oil prices are currently trading at multi-year highs, supported by the rebound in the global economy after extended periods of lockdown due to Covid-19. The scarcity of gas and coal supplies and rising consumption in India and China have led to a sustained rally in the prices for oil and gas. Brent, the international benchmark under which two thirds of the world's crude is traded, was down 0.55 per cent to trade at $81.72 a barrel at 11.53am UAE time. West Texas Intermediate, which tracks US crude grades, was down 0.58 per cent at $80.32 a barrel. Dr Al Jaber affirmed Opec's third-largest producer's plans for higher oil and gas output. At the same time, we are constantly innovating to further reduce our carbon intensity," he said "We were the first company to bring carbon capture and storage to the region, and we are expanding our capacity from 800 thousand tonnes of carbon dioxide per year to 5 million," he said. The UAE announced plans to reach net zero emissions by 2050 before Cop26, which was held in Glasgow, Scotland. The country will also become the first Gulf Arab nation to host the Cop summit in 2023. In line with its initiative to decarbonise, the UAE plans to invest $160bn in clean and renewable energy sources in the next three decades. "Rewiring the energy system is a multi-trillion-dollar business opportunity that is good for the climate, good for humanity and good for economic growth," Dr Al Jaber told Adipec. "We need Solutions that are both pro- climate and pro-growth. We must invest in the energy that the world needs today, while we create the energy system of tomorrow." The oil and gas industry should play a pivotal role in facilitating this transition, with its "knowledge and skills", he added. In October, Adnoc said it would meet up to 100 per cent of its power requirements from solar and nuclear sources after signing an agreement with the Emirates Water and Electricity Company, in line with the UAE's recent pledge to reach net zero by the middle of the century. It is set to become the first oil and gas company in the world to completely decarbonise its electric grid at scale. The supply of clean power to Adnoc will begin in January 2022. The initiative was unveiled by Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed, a member of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Office and chairman of the executive committee of Adnoc's board of directors. The deal will also lock in a long-term renewable electricity off-take agreement for Ewec.

Page 11 UK coal power stations paid double to keep electricity flowing as wind drops. NewBase + Bloomberg Britain’s last remaining coal power stations are being paid record sums to supply power as one of the least windy summers since 1961 kept wind power low. The UK’s electricity system operator ESO spent £86m last week, including making payments to fossil fuel power stations, The Guardian reported. That included payments of up to £4,000 per megawatt-hour for fossil fuel power stations to generate electricity at short notice. The West Burton plant in Nottingham was among those fired up. A National Grid spokesman said, “In balancing the electricity system, we take actions in economical order and not on the basis of generation type. “Depending on system conditions, some power sources may be better at meeting a balancing requirement than others, so the most cost-effective solution to ensure safe, secure system operation will be sought.” Britain regularly goes for long stretches without using coal power, but coal power plants are kept on for when weather means it’s difficult to generate power from wind. This summer, Britain brought forward its target to end the use of coal in electricity generation by a year to October 2024.

Page 12 Ahead of hosting the UN's Climate Change Conference (COP26) in November, Britain has stepped up its efforts to encourage other nations to cut emissions more quickly. Experts believe ending the use of coal, the most carbon-intensive fossil fuel, for power could play a major part in limiting the modern-day rise in global temperatures to 1.5C, a key international target. Britain, home to the world's first coal-fuelled power plant in the 1880s, was largely reliant on the fossil fuel for electricity for the following century, but last year reduced its use of coal in the power sector to less than 2% of the electricity mix. That compares with around 25% five years ago, and is far below the levels seen in some countries.China generated 53% of the world's total coal-fired power in 2020, Ember, an energy and climate research group, found. In 2017, more than a million people died worldwide due to burning fossil fuels, with half the deaths caused by coal, a study found this summer. Researchers from around the world analysed the health effects of air pollution (and where it was coming from) in 200 countries. The researchers say that pollution from cars and industry is only part of the problem as tiny PM2.5 particles – which can go into people’s lungs – can also make people ill if they cook every night on a stove. Professor Randall Martin of Washington University in St Louis said: "PM2.5 is the world's leading environmental risk factor for mortality. Our key objective is to understand its sources.” Researchers worked with data sources from around the world to analyse different sources of air pollution - from energy production to burning gas to dust storms. Erin McDuffie, a visiting research associate, said the central question is: "How many deaths are attributable to exposure to air pollution from specific sources?"

Brent futures added 35 cents, or 0.43%, to $83.40 a barrel, as of 10.21 GMT, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude climbed 29 cents, or 0.36%, to $81.18 a barrel. “At these oil prices, supply is going to grow but it might take six months and inventories have come down so low. We don’t have a safety margin,” said Tony Nunan, a Tokyo-based senior risk manager at Mitsubishi Corp. Oil price special coverage

Page 14 “We have very low inventory levels and if we have a very cold winter and OPEC is still sluggish at increasing supplies that could push oil prices up.” Global oil markets remain very tight and heavily backwardated as demand returns to pre-pandemic levels, Trafigura’s Chief Executive Officer Jeremy Weir said. “We are seeing a very, very tight oil market but it’s not artificially tight because of what OPEC is doing. Demand is there,” Weir said at the FT Commodities Asia Summit. Russian crude grades sold in Asia fetched the highest spot premiums in 22 months for cargoes loading in January, extending gains for a fourth straight month as robust demand and firm refining margins support prices, trade sources said on Tuesday. Still, worries about demand destruction due to the COVID-19 pandemic weighed. Europe has again become the epicentre of the COVID-19 pandemic, prompting some governments to consider re-imposing lockdowns, while China is battling the spread of its biggest outbreak caused by the Delta variant. The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) last week cut its world oil demand forecast for the fourth quarter by 330,000 barrels per day (bpd) from last month’s forecast, as high energy prices hampered economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. Fears of declining demand come as supplies are expected to rise. Last week, U.S. energy firms added oil and natural gas rigs for a third week in a row, encouraged by a 65% increase in U.S. crude prices so far this year. U.S. shale production in December is expected to reach pre-pandemic levels of 8.68 million barrels a day, according to Rystad Energy. Money managers raised their net long U.S. crude futures and options positions in the week to Nov. 9, the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) said on Monday. The speculator group raised its futures and options position in New York and London by 11,328 contracts to 353,807 during the period.

We're excited to showcase our solutions before the region's waste management community and to forge closer ties with industry stakeholders present at the event." Echoing this sentiment, Marc Jennings, CEO of the market-leading wet waste processing solutions developer CDE Group, said: "This is one event we are truly looking forward to next year within the MEA region. EcoWASTE is the biggest event in the industry, and the place where stakeholders of waste management meet, network, and explore new solutions. We believe we're bringing something unique to waste management systems. Every day, we empower our customers globally to transform waste into valuable resources, laying the foundations for the circular economy, and so we're looking forward to raising further awareness and showcasing our expertise to the market's biggest buyers in the MEA region." On completion, the plant will have the potential to transform up to 4 million tonnes of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) every year into Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), said a statement from the company. The SAF produced from the WtF plant in Abu Dhabi would be compliant to International Civil Aviation Organisation’s (ICAO) standards for decarbonisation of the aviation sector. The plant will help Abu Dhabi to divert 75 percent of municipal waste away from landfills, it stated.

Page 18 This plant will significantly contribute to the UAE’s actions on Climate Change. The UAE is the host of 28th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP28), it added. According to Tadweer, the Waste-to-SAF plant is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by about 1 million tonnes annually – equivalent to the removal of more than 200,000 cars from the road. "This agreement is aligned with Tadweer’s continued efforts to divert waste from landfills and harness technological innovations that are commercially viable to address the challenges posed by the treatment of large volume of waste," said its Director General Dr Salem Al Kaabi. Etihad Airways said it would be entering into a long-term SAF offtake agreement with Tadweer as the provider of feedstock waste under a long-term waste supply agreement. Private sector participants would be invited to submit proposals to design, build, finance, operate and maintain the facilities, which will use advanced commercially proven technology to convert municipal solid waste into Sustainable Aviation Fuel, he stated. Al Kaabi said: "In working closely with our partners, Tadweer is proud to steer Abu Dhabi’s sustainability agenda through the implementation of an integrated, world-class waste management system that ensures a cleaner and more sustainable environment for present and future generations." "This collaboration between Tadweer and Etihad Airways reinforces Abu Dhabi’s, and the broader UAE’s, commitment to net-zero targets that puts UAE on a credible path to zero out emissions by mid-century. We look forward to capitalising on further opportunities that utilise the most efficient waste-management technologies and drive our nation’s clean development ambitions," he stated. Etihad Aviation Group COO Mohammad Al Bulooki said: "To truly make sustainability a reality in aviation we need to look at the biggest contributing factor, fuel, where sustainable aviation fuel is required to meet the net zero target." "Through this agreement, four million tonnes of waste will be converted into 140 million gallons of SAF, representing a significant portion of our annual fuel requirement. Today’s collaboration between Tadweer and Etihad Airways is just the first step towards a much broader engagement within Abu Dhabi to create a hub for producing SAF and synfuels," he added.
