Polar Climate Region
• “Polar regions are deserts of ice and snow , swept by
powerful winds.”
• 20% of earth consists of polar regions
• Average range of temperature is less then 10֯C.
Continue..
• Lack warm summers.
• Sun shines for long hours in summer and fewer hours in
winter.
• Cool summers and very cold winters.
Continue..
• Polar climate results in
Treeless tundra
Glaciers
Semi permanent layer of ice
Permanent layer of ice
Facts
• Polar regions are found in north and south poles of
Earth.
• Average rain fall is less than 250mm per year.
• Temperature range is -88 to 10֯C
Types
• Two types of polar climate regions.
• Tundra climate
• Ice cap climate
Alpine climate
Tundra climate
• At least one month whose average temperature is above
0ºC.
• No trees can grow here
• Some specialized plans can grow.
Ice cap climate
• No month of year contain temperature above 0ºC.
• No plants can grow
• Ice layer remain throughout the year.
Alpine climate
• It can mimic either tundra or ice cap climate.
• Present at high altitudes.
• No month has an average temperature of 10º or higher.
Tundra
Antarctica
Locations
• Ice cap:
Only Antarctica contain predominant ice cap polar
climate
• Tundra:
Coastal areas of Greenland
Antarctica
• Ice cap polar climate
• Coldest on whole of earth
• Temp -89.2ºC
• 166 mm precipitation per year
Region having tundra climate
• Eurasian land
• Large areas of northern Siberia
• Northern ice land
• Northern Canada
Continue..
• South America
• Falk land island
• Northern Alaska
Fauna of polar region
• Arctic region (tundra):
Lemmings
Arctic owls
Snowy owl
Polar bears
Reindeer
Fauna of polar region
• Antarctica:
Baleen whales
Leopard seal
penguins
Hump back whale
Lantern fish
General properties of fauna
• Animals of polar climate region contain following
general properties
Warm blooded animals
Maintain body temperature
 some contain fur and feathers
General properties of fauna
 Layer of fat (blubber) under their skin
Take enough food o generate heat
 some do Huddling
Huddling :
“ together in groups for protection from wind”.
Flora of polar climate region
Conifers
Grasses
Algae
Mosses
Lichens
Small trees (grow during short period)
