THERMAL COMFORT DEFINITION
THERMAL COMFORT IS THAT CONDITION OF MIND
WHICH EXPRESSES SATISFACTION WITH THE THERMAL
ENVIRONMENT, I.E. THE CONDITION WHEN SOMEONE IS NOT
FEELING EITHER TOO HOT OR TOO COLD.
WHEN IS THERMAL COMFORT ACHIEVED ?
SCIENTIFICALLY, THERMAL COMFORT IS ACHIEVED
WHEN OCCUPANTS OF A BUILDING ARE THERMALLY
COMFORTABLE, THE UK NATIONAL SAFETY COMMISSION
STATES THAT THE MINIMUM PERCENTAGE OF THERMALLY
COMFORTABLE OCCUPANTS SHOULD BE 80%, OTHERWISE
THERMAL COMFORTABILITY ISN’T ACHIEVED. THIS MEANS
THERMAL COMFORT CAN BE ASSESSED BY SURVEYING THE
OCCUPANTS.
EXTERIOR SHADING
• MUST HAVE SPECIFIC DEPTH.
• MUST BLOCK SUMMER SUN.
• MUST ALLOW THE WINTER SUN.
INTERIOR SHADING
• REDUCE ROOM’S HEAT GAIN.
• INCREASE THE ROOM’S SHADING
REFLECTIVE COATINGS
• REDUCE HEAT GAIN.
• INCREASE PRIVACY.
• CAN BE APPLIED TO NEW OR OLD WINDOWS
WINDOW GLAZING
• IN TP WINDOWS ARE DOUBLE GLAZED WITH COATINGS.
• PROTECTS THE WINDOW FROM HEAT LOSING IN THE WINTER.
• INSULATES SOUND FROM OUTSIDE ENVIRONMENT.
• CAN BE FILLED WITH GASES TO INCREASE R-VALUE.
WINDOW FRAME MATERIAL
THE DIFFERENCES OF HEAT LOSS THROUGH DIFFERENT WINDOW FRAMES:
WINDOW TREATMENTS
DIFFERENCES IN HEAT GAIN THROUGH DIFFERENT WINDOW TREATMENTS IN THE SUMMER:
WINDOW TREATMENTS
THE DIFFERENCES IN HEAT LOSS THROUGH DIFFERENT WINDOW TREATMENTS IN THE WINTER:
ROOF INSULATION
• TP 301-303 SUFFER FROM LARGE AMOUNT
OF HEAT GAIN IN THE SUMMER AND
REQUIRE INSULATION.
• CURRENT ROOF IS MADE FROM TAR AND
GRAVEL, WHICH:
 PROVIDES GOOD PROTECTION AGAINST
UV RAYS.
 MOST ECONOMICAL OPTION FOR FLAT
ROOF APPLICATIONS.
ROOF GLAZING SYSTEM
• CAUSES THE FOLLOWINGIN THE COURTYARD:
 HIGH TEMPERATURE AT SUMMER.
 WATER LEAKAGE AT WINTER.
• SOLUTION IS ADDING OPENINGS ON MOST
TOP OF THE GLAZING.
 THIS WOULD LET THE HEAT ESCAPE.
 WOULD LET SMOKE EXIT IN CASE OF FIRE.
VENTILATION
TECHNO PARK IS A LARGE BUILDING,
WHERE LARGE AMOUNTS OF AIR NEED TO BE
CHANGED IN THE ROOMS, AND IN THE SUMMER
IT REQUIRES MORE EFFICIENT VENTILATION
ESPECIALLY ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF THE
BUILDING.
Whole- Building Ventilation :
Total area = 5096m2 = 54852.89 ft2
No. of rooms is 71.
105+(15*71) = 1170 cfm
the ventilation can be provided for classes as by adding ventilation openings at the top of the wall, and they will be
connected to air passages above the suspended ceiling of the corridor, and the air passages will lead to the air exhaust.
ADDING EXHAUST OUTLET AT THE ROOF LEVEL. BELOW THE OUTLET EXHAUST, CENTRAL CORE OR ATRIUM
FACILITIES MUST EXIST TO ALLOW VERTICAL DISTRIBUTION OF AIR.
THE ADVANTAGE OF THE METHOD
IS THAT THE EXHAUST AIR OUTLET
EXTERNAL SHAPE CAN BE DISGUISED,
WHICH WOULD HELP IT MATCHING THE
BUILDING’S ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN
CONCEPT.
VENTILATION
INSULATION AT EXPANSION JOINTS
EXPANSION JOINT IS A MID-STRUCTURE SEPARATION
DESIGNED TO RELIEVE STRESS ON BUILDING MATERIALS
CAUSED BY BUILDING MOVEMENT INDUCED BY THERMAL
EXPANSION AND CONTRACTION CAUSED BY TEMPERATURE
CHANGES, SWAY CAUSED BY WIND, AND SEISMIC EVENTS.
EXPANSION JOINT IS A FEW CENTIMETERS SPACING CUT
THROUGH THE BUILDING, THIS SPACE CAN CAUSE HEAT FLOW
IN AND OUT OF BUILDING. IN ADDITION TO WATER LEAKAGE.
INSULATION AT EXPANSION JOINTS
• THE PROBLEM IN TECHNO PARK IS THAT THE
EXPANSION JOINTS AREN’T WELL INSULATED,
AND THEY LEAK WATER.
• THE COVER HAS TO BE ABLE TO EXPAND IN THE
WINTER AND CONTRACT IN THE SUMMER,
WHILE IN FACT THE USED COVER IS A SIMPLE
FLAT STEEL SHEET.
INSULATION AT EXPANSION JOINTS
THE EMPTY SPACE IN THE JOINT SHOULD BE
FILLED WITH GOOD INSULATOR.
SEALANTS ARE BEST SOLUTION FOR THESE
JOINTS, WERE THEY CAN BE:
 FIRE RESISTANT, WHICH STOPS FIRE FROM
PASSING THROUGH THE JOINT TO OTHER
FLOORS.
 WATER RESISTANT.
 PREVENT AIR FLOW THROUGH THEM.
AFTER FILLING THE EXPANSION JOINT, IT HAS
TO BE COVERED, COVERS HAVE MULTIPLE
SHAPES AND STYLES.
LIGHTING
THE OBJECTIVE OF EFFICIENT AND GOOD LIGHTING
DESIGN IN AN EDUCATIONAL BUILDING:
TO PROVIDE OCCUPANTS WITH THE FEELING OF
WELL-BEING. TO BE ABLE TO PERFORM THEIR TASKS
COMFORTABLY.
Visual
comfort
factors
uniformity
ratio
limited
glare rate
illuminance
ILLUMINANCE IS THE AMOUNT OR LEVEL OF LIGHT REQUIRED TO
CARRY OUT THE ACTIVITIES.
VARIATION OF LUMINANCE CAUSES DISTRACTION, AND REDUCES
THE VISUAL PERFORMANCE.
UNIFORMITY RATIO, IS WHEN THERE IS NO VARIATION OF
ILLUMINANCE ACROSS THE AREA WHERE THE ACTIVITIES ARE
PERFORMED.
LIMITED GLARE RATE IS ESTABLISHING MAXIMUM PERMITTED
VALUES OF GLARE, IN ORDER TO AVOID THE BRIGHT SOURCES IN
THE LINE OF VIEW.
LIGHTING
TP101-104
• LIT WITH COMPACT FLUORESCENT LIGHTS.
• SUFFER FROM INSUFFICIENT AND UNCOMFORTABLE LIGHTING.
• LIGHT IT ISN’T STRONG ENOUGH TO CARRY OUT THE USUAL TASKS FOR A LONG
AMOUNT OF TIME, SUCH AS A THREE HOURS LECTURE.
• STUDENTS SUFFER FROM EYE STRAIN AND LOSS OFCONCENTRATION.
• THE PROBLEM IS ESPECIALLY CONCENTRATED IN TP103-104, SINCE THERE IS NO
WINDOWS TO PROVIDE ANY DAYLIGHT.
• USING LINEAR FLUORESCENTS WILL IMPROVE THE VISUAL COMFORT IN THESE
ROOMS.
TP201-204
• STUDENTS SUFFER FROMINCOMFORTABILITY WHILE USING THE PROJECTOR WITH THE LIGHTS ON, BECAUSE OF HIGH
GLARE.
• GLARE IS TWO TYPES IN GENERAL:
 DISCOMFORT GLARE WHICH PRODUCES THE FEELINGS OF VISUAL DISCOMFORT.
 DISABILITY GLARE, WHICH IS CAUSED WHEN A BRIGHT LIGHT SOURCE IS CLOSE TO THE LINE OF VISION, WHICH MAKES THE TASK
HARDER TO SEE.
• GLARE EFFECTS CAN BE MINIMIZEDBY:
 GOOD POSITIONING AND ORIENTATION OF THE ROOM FURNITURE ACCORDING TO THE LIGHT SOURCE.
 SELECTING A PROPER AND GOOD DESIGN OF THE ILLUMINANCE OF THE WHITE BOARD
 USE OF BLINDS TO CONTROL DAYLIGHT. . FOR COMPUTER LABS, SCREENS WITH ANTI-GLARE FILTERS MUST BE SELECTED, ALSO THE
ORIENTATION OF THE COMPUTERS PLAYS A BIG ROLE.
HALLWAYS
• LIGHTING IS INSUFFICIENT
AT THE NIGHT TIME , WHERE
SMALL SIZE compact
FLUORESCENTS ARE USED.
• THE COMPACT FLUORESCENT
BULBS OF THE HALLWAYS
ARE MOUNTED BY THE
CEILING, WHICH MAKES THE
LIGHT DISTRIBUTION MORE
LIKE SPOT LIGHTS, WITH
LUMINOSITY VARIANCE.
USE RECESSED CEILING LIGHT,
THIS WOULD HELP GIVING MORE
LUMINOSITY TO THE HALLWAY
WITH MORE LIGHT
DISTRIBUTION.
EMERGENCY LIGHTING
• DOESN’T PROVIDE SUFFICIENT ILLUMINATION IN THE EVENT OF ELECTRICITY
FAILURE.
• IT OBSTACLES THE SPEED AND QUALITY OF EVACUATION OF THE BUILDING AT
EMERGENCY CASES.
• EMERGENCY LIGHTING EXISTS ONLY ON THE EAST SIDE OF TECHNO PARK
CLOSE TO THE EXIT.
• MORE EMERGENCY LIGHTS SHOULD BE PROVIDED AT THE ESCAPE ROUTES,
ESCAPE STAIRWAYS, CORRIDORS THAT HAS NO WINDOWS.
ACOUSTIC (TP301-303)
• OUTSIDE NOISE COMING FROM PARKING.
• NOISE CAUSED BY PEOPLE AT THE NEARBY CAFETERIA.
• VISION AND SOUND ARE OBSTRUCTED, BECAUSE CLASS
IS TOO BIG.
• ADD A SLOPING FLOOR SO STUDENTS AT THE BACK ARE AT
HIGHER LEVEL OF THE ONES IN FRONT OF THEM.
• INSTALLING A RUBBER MAT ON THE FLOOR WOULD HELP
DECREASING THE SOUND REVERBERATION
• ADDING ISOLATING DOORS TO ISOLATE SOUND.
BE THERMALLY COMFORT :)
THANK YOU

Building Technology Project (Improving thermal, lighting, and acoustic aspects of Techno Park)

  • 1.
  • 2. TECHNO PARK HOME OF FACULTIES OF ENGINEERING, BUSINESS AND MARINE SCHOOL. LOCATED IN THE EASTERN CAMPUS OF GIRNE AMERICAN UNIVERSITY. COORDINATES (33° 19’ 58’’ N , 33° 16’ 36’’ E). ALTITUDE OF 53.6M ABOVE THE SEA LEVEL.
  • 3. KYRENIA • TYPICAL MEDITERRANEAN CLIMATE. • HOT DRY SUMMERS AND MILD WET WINTERS.
  • 5. THERMAL COMFORT DEFINITION THERMAL COMFORT IS THAT CONDITION OF MIND WHICH EXPRESSES SATISFACTION WITH THE THERMAL ENVIRONMENT, I.E. THE CONDITION WHEN SOMEONE IS NOT FEELING EITHER TOO HOT OR TOO COLD.
  • 6. WHEN IS THERMAL COMFORT ACHIEVED ? SCIENTIFICALLY, THERMAL COMFORT IS ACHIEVED WHEN OCCUPANTS OF A BUILDING ARE THERMALLY COMFORTABLE, THE UK NATIONAL SAFETY COMMISSION STATES THAT THE MINIMUM PERCENTAGE OF THERMALLY COMFORTABLE OCCUPANTS SHOULD BE 80%, OTHERWISE THERMAL COMFORTABILITY ISN’T ACHIEVED. THIS MEANS THERMAL COMFORT CAN BE ASSESSED BY SURVEYING THE OCCUPANTS.
  • 7. EXTERIOR SHADING • MUST HAVE SPECIFIC DEPTH. • MUST BLOCK SUMMER SUN. • MUST ALLOW THE WINTER SUN.
  • 8. INTERIOR SHADING • REDUCE ROOM’S HEAT GAIN. • INCREASE THE ROOM’S SHADING
  • 9. REFLECTIVE COATINGS • REDUCE HEAT GAIN. • INCREASE PRIVACY. • CAN BE APPLIED TO NEW OR OLD WINDOWS
  • 10. WINDOW GLAZING • IN TP WINDOWS ARE DOUBLE GLAZED WITH COATINGS. • PROTECTS THE WINDOW FROM HEAT LOSING IN THE WINTER. • INSULATES SOUND FROM OUTSIDE ENVIRONMENT. • CAN BE FILLED WITH GASES TO INCREASE R-VALUE.
  • 11. WINDOW FRAME MATERIAL THE DIFFERENCES OF HEAT LOSS THROUGH DIFFERENT WINDOW FRAMES:
  • 12. WINDOW TREATMENTS DIFFERENCES IN HEAT GAIN THROUGH DIFFERENT WINDOW TREATMENTS IN THE SUMMER:
  • 13. WINDOW TREATMENTS THE DIFFERENCES IN HEAT LOSS THROUGH DIFFERENT WINDOW TREATMENTS IN THE WINTER:
  • 14. ROOF INSULATION • TP 301-303 SUFFER FROM LARGE AMOUNT OF HEAT GAIN IN THE SUMMER AND REQUIRE INSULATION. • CURRENT ROOF IS MADE FROM TAR AND GRAVEL, WHICH:  PROVIDES GOOD PROTECTION AGAINST UV RAYS.  MOST ECONOMICAL OPTION FOR FLAT ROOF APPLICATIONS.
  • 15. ROOF GLAZING SYSTEM • CAUSES THE FOLLOWINGIN THE COURTYARD:  HIGH TEMPERATURE AT SUMMER.  WATER LEAKAGE AT WINTER. • SOLUTION IS ADDING OPENINGS ON MOST TOP OF THE GLAZING.  THIS WOULD LET THE HEAT ESCAPE.  WOULD LET SMOKE EXIT IN CASE OF FIRE.
  • 16. VENTILATION TECHNO PARK IS A LARGE BUILDING, WHERE LARGE AMOUNTS OF AIR NEED TO BE CHANGED IN THE ROOMS, AND IN THE SUMMER IT REQUIRES MORE EFFICIENT VENTILATION ESPECIALLY ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF THE BUILDING. Whole- Building Ventilation : Total area = 5096m2 = 54852.89 ft2 No. of rooms is 71. 105+(15*71) = 1170 cfm
  • 17. the ventilation can be provided for classes as by adding ventilation openings at the top of the wall, and they will be connected to air passages above the suspended ceiling of the corridor, and the air passages will lead to the air exhaust.
  • 18. ADDING EXHAUST OUTLET AT THE ROOF LEVEL. BELOW THE OUTLET EXHAUST, CENTRAL CORE OR ATRIUM FACILITIES MUST EXIST TO ALLOW VERTICAL DISTRIBUTION OF AIR.
  • 19. THE ADVANTAGE OF THE METHOD IS THAT THE EXHAUST AIR OUTLET EXTERNAL SHAPE CAN BE DISGUISED, WHICH WOULD HELP IT MATCHING THE BUILDING’S ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN CONCEPT. VENTILATION
  • 20. INSULATION AT EXPANSION JOINTS EXPANSION JOINT IS A MID-STRUCTURE SEPARATION DESIGNED TO RELIEVE STRESS ON BUILDING MATERIALS CAUSED BY BUILDING MOVEMENT INDUCED BY THERMAL EXPANSION AND CONTRACTION CAUSED BY TEMPERATURE CHANGES, SWAY CAUSED BY WIND, AND SEISMIC EVENTS. EXPANSION JOINT IS A FEW CENTIMETERS SPACING CUT THROUGH THE BUILDING, THIS SPACE CAN CAUSE HEAT FLOW IN AND OUT OF BUILDING. IN ADDITION TO WATER LEAKAGE.
  • 21. INSULATION AT EXPANSION JOINTS • THE PROBLEM IN TECHNO PARK IS THAT THE EXPANSION JOINTS AREN’T WELL INSULATED, AND THEY LEAK WATER. • THE COVER HAS TO BE ABLE TO EXPAND IN THE WINTER AND CONTRACT IN THE SUMMER, WHILE IN FACT THE USED COVER IS A SIMPLE FLAT STEEL SHEET.
  • 22. INSULATION AT EXPANSION JOINTS THE EMPTY SPACE IN THE JOINT SHOULD BE FILLED WITH GOOD INSULATOR. SEALANTS ARE BEST SOLUTION FOR THESE JOINTS, WERE THEY CAN BE:  FIRE RESISTANT, WHICH STOPS FIRE FROM PASSING THROUGH THE JOINT TO OTHER FLOORS.  WATER RESISTANT.  PREVENT AIR FLOW THROUGH THEM. AFTER FILLING THE EXPANSION JOINT, IT HAS TO BE COVERED, COVERS HAVE MULTIPLE SHAPES AND STYLES.
  • 23. LIGHTING THE OBJECTIVE OF EFFICIENT AND GOOD LIGHTING DESIGN IN AN EDUCATIONAL BUILDING: TO PROVIDE OCCUPANTS WITH THE FEELING OF WELL-BEING. TO BE ABLE TO PERFORM THEIR TASKS COMFORTABLY.
  • 24. Visual comfort factors uniformity ratio limited glare rate illuminance ILLUMINANCE IS THE AMOUNT OR LEVEL OF LIGHT REQUIRED TO CARRY OUT THE ACTIVITIES. VARIATION OF LUMINANCE CAUSES DISTRACTION, AND REDUCES THE VISUAL PERFORMANCE. UNIFORMITY RATIO, IS WHEN THERE IS NO VARIATION OF ILLUMINANCE ACROSS THE AREA WHERE THE ACTIVITIES ARE PERFORMED. LIMITED GLARE RATE IS ESTABLISHING MAXIMUM PERMITTED VALUES OF GLARE, IN ORDER TO AVOID THE BRIGHT SOURCES IN THE LINE OF VIEW. LIGHTING
  • 25. TP101-104 • LIT WITH COMPACT FLUORESCENT LIGHTS. • SUFFER FROM INSUFFICIENT AND UNCOMFORTABLE LIGHTING. • LIGHT IT ISN’T STRONG ENOUGH TO CARRY OUT THE USUAL TASKS FOR A LONG AMOUNT OF TIME, SUCH AS A THREE HOURS LECTURE. • STUDENTS SUFFER FROM EYE STRAIN AND LOSS OFCONCENTRATION. • THE PROBLEM IS ESPECIALLY CONCENTRATED IN TP103-104, SINCE THERE IS NO WINDOWS TO PROVIDE ANY DAYLIGHT. • USING LINEAR FLUORESCENTS WILL IMPROVE THE VISUAL COMFORT IN THESE ROOMS.
  • 26. TP201-204 • STUDENTS SUFFER FROMINCOMFORTABILITY WHILE USING THE PROJECTOR WITH THE LIGHTS ON, BECAUSE OF HIGH GLARE. • GLARE IS TWO TYPES IN GENERAL:  DISCOMFORT GLARE WHICH PRODUCES THE FEELINGS OF VISUAL DISCOMFORT.  DISABILITY GLARE, WHICH IS CAUSED WHEN A BRIGHT LIGHT SOURCE IS CLOSE TO THE LINE OF VISION, WHICH MAKES THE TASK HARDER TO SEE. • GLARE EFFECTS CAN BE MINIMIZEDBY:  GOOD POSITIONING AND ORIENTATION OF THE ROOM FURNITURE ACCORDING TO THE LIGHT SOURCE.  SELECTING A PROPER AND GOOD DESIGN OF THE ILLUMINANCE OF THE WHITE BOARD  USE OF BLINDS TO CONTROL DAYLIGHT. . FOR COMPUTER LABS, SCREENS WITH ANTI-GLARE FILTERS MUST BE SELECTED, ALSO THE ORIENTATION OF THE COMPUTERS PLAYS A BIG ROLE.
  • 27. HALLWAYS • LIGHTING IS INSUFFICIENT AT THE NIGHT TIME , WHERE SMALL SIZE compact FLUORESCENTS ARE USED. • THE COMPACT FLUORESCENT BULBS OF THE HALLWAYS ARE MOUNTED BY THE CEILING, WHICH MAKES THE LIGHT DISTRIBUTION MORE LIKE SPOT LIGHTS, WITH LUMINOSITY VARIANCE. USE RECESSED CEILING LIGHT, THIS WOULD HELP GIVING MORE LUMINOSITY TO THE HALLWAY WITH MORE LIGHT DISTRIBUTION.
  • 28. EMERGENCY LIGHTING • DOESN’T PROVIDE SUFFICIENT ILLUMINATION IN THE EVENT OF ELECTRICITY FAILURE. • IT OBSTACLES THE SPEED AND QUALITY OF EVACUATION OF THE BUILDING AT EMERGENCY CASES. • EMERGENCY LIGHTING EXISTS ONLY ON THE EAST SIDE OF TECHNO PARK CLOSE TO THE EXIT. • MORE EMERGENCY LIGHTS SHOULD BE PROVIDED AT THE ESCAPE ROUTES, ESCAPE STAIRWAYS, CORRIDORS THAT HAS NO WINDOWS.
  • 29. ACOUSTIC (TP301-303) • OUTSIDE NOISE COMING FROM PARKING. • NOISE CAUSED BY PEOPLE AT THE NEARBY CAFETERIA. • VISION AND SOUND ARE OBSTRUCTED, BECAUSE CLASS IS TOO BIG. • ADD A SLOPING FLOOR SO STUDENTS AT THE BACK ARE AT HIGHER LEVEL OF THE ONES IN FRONT OF THEM. • INSTALLING A RUBBER MAT ON THE FLOOR WOULD HELP DECREASING THE SOUND REVERBERATION • ADDING ISOLATING DOORS TO ISOLATE SOUND.
  • 30. BE THERMALLY COMFORT :) THANK YOU
