13. Theme or focus of image & reasons for choice
Image 1 - The theme of this image was urban, i looked for a specific location that had graffiti
on brick walls to match the theme. The main focus of this image is the model; i positioned the
camera so she was directly in the centre of the frame. I chose to take this image because her
body fit into the frame perfectly showing her outfit, also showing the graffiti in the background.
Image 2 - The theme for this image was urban, i used the same location just to capture the
urban style. The focus is the model; she is sat on some steps and looks as if she doesn't know
the camera is there. I chose to take this image because i liked how her clothes stood out from
the dull colours around her and how she looks like she is oblivious to the camera.
Image 3 - This image is very similar to the previous image. The theme is urban, the focus is the
model sat on steps in an alleyway. I chose to take this also because she looked oblivious to
the camera.
Image 4 - This image is also very similar to the previous two. The theme and focus are the same
for all three. I took this image because she was sat in a different position to the previous
images but doing the exact same thing. The image was captured as she was adjusting hair, I
liked this because she knew I was taking the photo but didn't look at the camera.
Image 5 - For this image the theme was urban and the focus was also the model sat on steps
of a dull alleyway. I took this image because the angle looked different to the other images; I
took it from quite low down to ensure I got all of her body inside the frame. I chose to take this
image because of the position she was sat in and the way she looks at the camera with a
calm look.
Image 6 - This image is pretty much the same as the previous one. With the same theme and
focus. I chose to take this image because of the position she was sat in and to capture her
surroundings.
Image 7 - For this image the theme was urban. The location, in this case an alleyway was the
same but the images took there were took in different places of the location. The focus of this
image is the model; she is position directly in the centre of the frame. I chose to take this
image because I like how she stood out from her surrounding with what she was wearing.
Capturing the surroundings in the shot also helps establish the theme.
Image 8 - This image is also urban and the focus is the model, which is positioned to the right
of the frame. I chose to position her to the right leaving space on the left so the audience
would look directly at the focus and not get distracted.
Image 9 - The theme for this image is urban, the graffiti is noticeable in the left of the image.
The focus of this image is the model that is in the centre of the frame. I chose to take this for
the same reason as image 3 and 4, because she isn't looking into the camera.
Image 10 - This image is also urban and the focus of the image is the model who is directly in
the centre of the frame smiling into the camera lens. I chose to take this image as it was
different than the other because it is a close up of the model smiling into the lens.
Techniques used
With each of these images the shutter speed, ISO and f stop was set at the same setting
throughout the shoot. When setting everything to the correct number, I set the shutter speed
quite low to ensure it looked bright enough. I had to take f stop into consideration because I
didn’t want them to be too dark. This also affected the focus of the image.
14. When taking these images I took rule of thirds into consideration for example with image 8, 9
and 10 especially. For image 8 I wanted the focus of the image to be to the left of the frame
of the frame. However, in the majority of the other images I positioned the focus to the centre
of the frame. By using the rule of thirds grid this helped my images to be well balanced.
Depth of field was definitely used in these images, you can see how the around the inside of
the frame is slightly blurred. You can see this more clearly in the last 3 images because it’s a
close up. The f stop was set quite low which made the background very blurred.
Strengths & suggested improvements
I think I have shown quite a few strengths, especially with the positioning and overall editing of
most of these images. I think images 1, 8 and 10 really show my model in a positive way and
are upto the standards I wanted them to be, and I also believe these images could be used
for a music magazine.
Looking through my images I see that there are a few improvement needed with the editing. I
think that image 3 could be better by turning down the colour balance slightly. In image 9
there is a shadow in the left bottom corner which could have been prevented. If I had the
chance to do this again I definitely would take all this into consideration.
Editing details
Image 1 - for this image I used the saturation to make the colours pale. I then pushed the
brightness up slightly so the picture didn't look too dull.
Image 2 - With this image I pushed the brightness, turned the contrast down slightly so around
my model was dark. I then pushed up the saturation just a little bit so the bright colours of the
clothes stood out from the dark colours around.
Image 3 - For this image I went for warm colours. I turned the brightness and contrast up. I then
slightly pushed the colour balance up to the reds and oranges to give my image an orange
tint all over.
Image 4 - When editing this image I turned the brightness and saturation up to make the
colours look bold. I also cropped the image slightly on the right hand side to get rid of
anything that would distract the viewer from the focus of the image.
Image 5 - This image is opposite to image 3 as for this one I went with cold colours. I turned
down the contrast and brightness then also pushed the colour balance down to give the
image a blue tint.
Image 6 - With this image I hardly edited it at all apart from turning up the brightness and
contrast to make the colours look bold.
Image 7 - For this image I also tried to give it a warm look by pushing the colour balance upto
the reds. However I didn't make it look as orange, I did turn the contrast up also to ensure the
clothes stood out from everything else that had an orange tint.
Image 8 - When editing this image I changed the colour to black and white. I then turned up
the brightness just slightly then used the contrast to make the dark colours darker and the light
colours lighter. I also cropped the right side of the image.
15. Image 9 - This image was hardly edited as again, only pushed the brightness and contrast up
to make the image look more vibrant.
Image 10 - For this image I thought I’d make it look different to the rest. I duplicated the layer,
changed the colours to black and white. I turned the brightness and contrast up on both
layers then used the rubber tool to erase the black and white layer from the logo on the hat.
