Whaling Exemption Essay
I'd like discuss about an exemption for whaling in this week. One of the reason I chose the topic is
that I'm originally from Japan, and the exemption is the one of the biggest issue Japanese should
dispute. My answers to the questions are below.
1. I totally disagree with the Norwegian and Japanese exemption for whaling even if it's their
tradition. The Japanese government claims hunting whale is based on their traditional culture and
Japanese fishers have hunted whales for few hundred years so that none of foreign countries has
right to control if Japanese people should eat whales or not. Whales were important protein for
Japanese people between 1940s and 1960s, and they killed more than 24 grand whales in 1964
(BBC, 2016). In addition, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is very difficult to find the way all of the international resolutions fairly works for all countries.
Each country has their individual culture, and sometimes the culture is hardly understood for other
countries. In globalization, the world trade is one of the most important sector in all countries, and
WTO has a crucial role. It never should be controlled by few dominant countries, such as the US.
Anytime WTO enacts international rules, all decision should be based on certain research and
ethical purposes. Each of nations has different idea. For example, the reason 94% of Australian are
against whaling is that they think that whales are scared animals, whereas Japanese or Norwegian
people think whales are the same meat as beef and pork. There is no answer to decide which opinion
is justice. However, if nations' activities give critical damages to environment, nations have to
decide to stop their activities to preserve nature. And all of prohibition should be based on scientific
facts but should not be decided by individual perspective. I have no particular idea who serve on
WTO, but I think it shouldn't be consisted of only few dominant countries.
4. I define "cultural activities" is phenomenon by experiences of local life, tradition, or religion.
Each nations has their unique cultural activities. Globalization has made nations unified. However,
we can't forget how important preserving our culture

Japan 's Identity And Cultural Identity
Harumi Befu is an Emeritus Professor of Anthropological Sciences in the School of Humanities and
Sciences at Stanford University. He has published in both English and Japanese journals, and his
research interests include the social and analysis aspects of Japan's globalisation, and analysis of
Japan's nationality and cultural identity. In his article "Concepts of Japan, Japanese culture and the
Japanese", he discusses in a strong and unbiased method the reality of what Japan truly is. However,
despite the strength of his article there are the negatives, where he does not address any solutions to
the issues he raises. When most people think of Japan, it is the main and central island of Honshu,
with their culture and language being the first thing that comes to mind. The climate, culture,
language and people of Honshu have always been praised in various means of media such as
paintings and stories. Resulting with Japan's minor islands like Hokkaido and Okinawa and those
who live in those areas are often forgotten, same with individual cultures and dialects of Japan as a
whole. Befu attempts to discuss in order to provide a different approach to common views of Japan
by discussing how diverse, multi–cultural and multi–national the country is. Befu is also not afraid
to discuss the darker sides of Japanese thought and society by addressing various issues, such as the
notion of "essentialism" that is evident within Japanese culture, which dismisses the idea that

Essay about Comparison of Japanese and American Cultures
COMPARISON OF JAPANESE AND AMERICAN CULTURES
As Mahatma Gandhi said, "No culture can live, if it attempts to be exclusive" (Mahatma). Our
culture identifies who we are and how we behave in social environments and provides us with a
foundation in which to live our lives and raise our families. Each individual culture has certain
customs and courtesies that are important. Exposure to the cultures of others can be intimidating and
can leave a person feeling confused and unsure about how they fit in (Schaefer 60). Culture shock
can leave a person feeling out of place in an unfamiliar culture (Schaefer 60). Our diverse societies
demand understanding and acceptance of other cultures. Learning and understanding these cultures

Visits are generally arranged in advance and are very rarely spontaneous (Japan). When someone
comes for a visit they must remove their shoes in the entry area of the home and place them
together, pointing toward the outdoors; slippers are usually worn while inside (Japan). It is also
customary to remove your coat prior to stepping into the entry area (Japan). Guests are usually
modest and reserved when they are visiting and will be offered the most comfortable seat in the
home (Japan). When offered a meal it is customary for the guest to hesitate slightly before accepting
it and will then accept with gratitude (Japan). Guests do not usually offer compliments on household
items, as this may embarrass the host (Japan). It is customary to bring fruit or cake to offer as a gift
for the host which is given and accepted with both hands and a slight bow (Japan). It is considered
rude for a host to open a gift from a visitor at the time it is given (Japan).
Many of the customs followed by Americans come from the upbringing of the individual. As adults,
Americans may form their own special customs that will be unique for their family. The greetings
and visiting customs may vary from family to family, but generally most Americans have a
simplistic approach. American greetings are generally informal. Men and women greet each other
with a smile and a firm handshake (United States). Close friends and relatives will welcome each

Nitobe Inazo's Influence On American Culture
Nitobe Inazo and his widely international popular book, influenced the way Japan was viewed by
Americans and the rest of the world during modern times (1900–45). It is questionable whether or
not he was a reliable source. However, without a doubt, Inazo impacted to international view of
Japan, during a time of imperialistic military events leading up to the fall of Japan at the end of
World War II. Nitobe Inazo was an educator, author and diplomat best known for his book Bushido:
The Soul of Japan. Nitobe was born into the Nambu Clan, which were made nobility during his life.
He was the son of a samurai who lived during the Meji and Taisho periods in Japan. After his early
life, Inazo, studied English Literature and Economics at Tokyo University. Then in 1884, he traveled
to the United States, where he stayed for three years, and studied political science and economics at
Johns Hopkins. Throughout his time in Baltimore, Maryland he became a member of a Quaker
society. Through the society, he met his wife Mary Patterson Elkson. In 1891, Inazo return back to
Japan to fulfil a teaching position. Upon returning to Japan, he has received one of his five doctoral
degrees and had published books in English and German. By 1901, he had been appointed to the
Japanese colonial government in Taiwan as a technical advisor, who headed the Sugar ... Show more

These statements are criticized by an American, Raymond Buell, in an article entitled, An Open

past, seen him "faithfully served international cooperation" and then to hear that he is "indifferent"
about the violations of Japan in the League Convent and anti–war pact and has "no sympathy". This
shows that Americans distrusted Japan's only diplomat because of his harsh outlook on morally
wrong events. One can also see this with the Rape of

Taking a Brief Look at the Work of Carlos Ghosn
When Carlos Ghosn becoming the new CEO, the managers and employees was not happy about it
because they don't know what is his intentions. He whom was known as the "Le Cost Killer" did not
even blink an eye when changing the current organizational culture and the internal processes of
Nissan. The main reason of the resistance in Nissan was because of Ghosn's Brazilian ethnicity and
also his Lebanese heritage and the difference in culture way of approaching the problems are really
different from the people of Japan. Everyone knows that the Japanese management culture is the
masculine(manly) type with large power distance and that the Japanese people are really obedient
towards the higher ups (Hofstede). Carlos whom previously had shown a proactive management
type of style at Renault where he managed to improve the cost–efficiencies and because of his good
management record, he was being headhunted to become the CEO of Nissan. In a country like
Japan, one usually assume that the new CEO should be someone who knows the local culture and
customs of Japan but in this case however Carlos was probably aware of the fact that regardless of
his shortage of knowledge about the culture itself, he had an advantage for having worked on four
different countries with different cultures and was able to overcome the cultural differences.
Back in 1991, Nissan was capable of producing good quality cars but the company itself had
ignored the customers' needs of "stylish and innovative cars".

Japan's Economic Efforts After the Earthquake and Tsunami...
Marketing Japan:
Towards a Better Future
In the month of March 2011, Japan was struck hard by a natural disaster. This earthquake was
known as the "Great East Japan Earthquake" which caused a tsunami (Euromonitor, 2013). Tourism
in Japan was at a standstill for about year until 2012. During the year of 2011, Japanese people did
not travel and "people refrained from leisure activities" (Euromonitor, 2013). About a year after the
earthquake, tourism grew and there was "an increased desire to travel" (Euromonitor, 2013). The
population of Japan is 128 million people, with a major city (Tokyo) which is home to 35 million
people (Berger, 2010). According to Berger, Japan is "third in the world for money spent on research
and development" ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Outcome
There is a need to develop an action plan and apply goals relative to the organization's purpose.
Their action plan was to reach 18 million visitors by 2016 (Euromonitor, 2013). And by 2030
approximately 30 million a year. That a 12 million visitor increase. Japanese government is looking
to focus on opening up tourism "markets of Southeast Asian countries" (Euromonitor, 2013). The
outcome "of inbound visitors is expected to increase by 7%" (Euromonitor, 2013). With the relaxed
visa requirements, there has been a fast growth of tourists to Japan in 2012. The highest number of
inbound arrivals were from Thailand and increased 77% with 257,000 trips (Euromonitor, 2013).
Under the campaign there were promotions such as TV shows in Indonesia focusing on Japanese
culture.
Target Market
The target market of Japan is the visitors from the Southeast Asia region. The Southeast Asia region
includes Thai, Malaysian, and Indonesia. By targeting these visitors, it is a new hope for "promising
markets for Japan's tourism industry". Japan should also target the increased retiree population. In
Japan the senior citizens have a passion for travelling. Japan's travel companies have accommodated
this target market. With the new demographic changing, there is a need for operators to take a grasp
on accommodating this target market (Euromonitor, 2013).
Marketing Process
The marketing process is one that should "enhance

People In Japanese Internment Camps
On December 7, 1941 the Japanese empire attacked Pearl Harbor. 2,400 Americans were killed and
1,200 injured. President Franklin D. Roosevelt immediately took action. In February 19, 1942 he
signed the executive order 9066. This executive order gave military army's immense power. They
were to take everyone with Japanese ancestry to internment camps were they would be held captive.
All of these military areas would exclude all the people of Japanese ancestry, just because they were
considered "dangerous". The Japanese people did not know if they would be imprisoned or
deported. They would be imprisoned or deported even if they only had 1/16th of Japanese blood.
110,000 Japanese people were relocated in camps. These people had to leave everything ... Show

All the camps had schools, hospitals, libraries and even post offices, but most of these were built by
the people living in those camps. A large amount of Japanese Americans died due to inadequate
medical care while others were killed by guards for not following the rules. It was all as in a prison
there was guard towers, barbed wire and the people didn't have the right to leave whenever they
wanted if they did try to leave or escape they would be shot and killed. Their life was extremely
restricted. In 1945 all internees were freed almost all their belongings were in ruins in World War 2
more than 20,000 Japanese Americans served in the U.S.A army. "45 years later the congress passed
the civil liberties act which acknowledged that the internment camps had been a grave injustice and
mandated congress to pay each victim of internment 20,000 dollars in reparation. As you can see,
Japanese internment was an important event in American history but it also affected a lot of families
of Japanese ancestry. They were to abandon their homes and everything else they

Essay on Japanese Internment in Canada
The core of the Japanese experience in Canada lies in the shameful and almost undemocratic
suspension of human rights that the Canadian government committed during World War II. As a
result, thousands of Japanese were uprooted to be imprisoned in internment camps miles away from
their homes. While only a small percentage of the Japanese living in Canada were actually nationals
of Japan, those who were Canadian born were, without any concrete evidence, continuously being
associated with a country that was nothing but foreign to them. Branded as "enemy aliens", the
Japanese Canadians soon came to the realization that their beloved nation harboured so much hate

The initial reaction to Pearl Harbor was to take cautious emergency actions to avert civil unrest.
Soon, the Canadian government passed the War Measures Act. It gave permission to intern all
undesirable Japanese, tie up every Japanese–owned fishing boat in British Columbia, close all
Japanese language schools, forbid the publishing of newspapers in Japanese, and seize all Japanese
property. All of which were subsequently carried out. In 1941, there were twenty–three thousand
five hundred Japanese persons in Canada, residing mainly on the coast of British Columbia. Of that,
six thousand seven hundred were Canadian born, seven thousand were naturalized citizens, and the
rest were nationals of Japan. However, nothing could make any difference. To the typical, white
British Columbian, the Japanese were all lower–class citizens. Five hours after the attack on Pearl
Harbour, forty–eight Japanese planes bombed Hong Kong where two Canadian battalions were
stationed, and were inflicted with heavy casualties. The "problem" of the resident Japanese in
British Columbia was then quickly set into the mainstream focus. Prior to declaring war on Japan,
Mackenzie King had stated that the "enemy country" had "wantonly and treacherously" attacked
British territory, and that "Japan's actions [were] a threat to the defence and freedom of Canada."

Government officials insisted they could not trust anyone of Japanese origin. The Japanese
Canadians had unfortunately come to witness the true extent of the bitterness that reeked from the
Caucasian population.
In addition to the feelings of hostility towards the Japanese, all their hard work to successfully
develop a stable living became worthless as evacuation and internment were seen to be the only
logical solutions. The "partial" evacuation of the Japanese nationals was still not enough. All had to
go. A multitude of political, economic and social organizations, as well as other pressure groups
from British Columbia began a constant flow of propaganda against the Japanese. They demanded
that further, immediate action be implemented. It was the pressure from these regional groups, who
were anxious to expel the Japanese forever, that eventually propelled the government to sway in
their favour. By early 1942, it was decided that all Japanese Canadians be rounded up and relocated
to the interior of British Columbia where they were to be held in detention camps. Mass internment
had begun. The Japanese were fingerprinted, photographed, and then given identification numbers,
which were considered as "formal tokens of their second–class status". Just one suitcase was
allowed to be brought to the camps, while all other property was taken into government possession
to be auctioned off for costs of the internment. The Japanese captivity called

Japanese Gender Inequality
About the women discrimination or gender gap, I think Japan has a longest history that women were
discriminated by men. To improve those gender gap, let's look at Japan's FACT as a "BAD
EXAMPLE". They strengthened the thoughts of women discrimination in historical era of samurai.
After that, they didn't accept any "Gentlemen's behavior" coming from Western countries, so that it
becomes a huge part of the culture that Japanese men look down on women. In 20's century, I think
most of Japanese men and even Japanese women thought that husband going out for work and his
wife stay at home, do the house work, and seeing their children is quite an ordinary thing. This
thought is what we call women discrimination and we have to change it. According to the World
Economic Forum's Global Gender Gap Report in 2012, Japan ranked 101 out of 135 ranked
countries. That means there are 100 countries that were determined to have fewer gender–based
disparities than Japan. Now, this score is based on four factors: economic participation and
opportunity (which is essentially Japanese women in the workplace), educational attainment, health
and survival, and political empowerment. Japan does really well in educational attainment and
health and survival. The scores that hurt Japan the most are the ones related to women in the work
place. It's well–known that Japanese women don't have the same job opportunities as men in Japan.
The number one reason I hear about this is because Japanese women

How Communication Is Influenced By Varieties Of...
Our communication is influenced by varieties of circumstances and people. However, the most
important thing which affects our communication is our backpack, which means the environment
that we raised in. we carry this backpack every time when we communicate with others, so in this
essay I am going to demonstrate my interpersonal communication behavior. First of all, I am going
to demonstrate what about my communication is unique to my specific circumstances. The way of
communication is different when I was talking with Americans and Japanese. Whenever I talk with
American people, I try to be more open mind. Since I came here in NDSU, I have a lot of
opportunities to communicate with Americans. I realized that Americans are so friendly, so I made
effort to adapt American culture. Instead of that, when I communicate with Japanese people, I will
be more shy. In my experiences, Japanese people tend to do not like the too friendly people at the
first time. Thus, I pay attention to not so be friendly for Japanese during the ice breaker. As a result,
when I communicate with Japanese, I will be like a coconuts. It means that the first time is
unfriendly like the shell of coconuts but the inside is very sweet and flexible. Instead, when I

The Internment Of Japanese-Canada
The internment of Japanese–Canadians was not only cruel but also immoral in a multitude of ways.
In the Second World War, Japanese–Canadians were seen as enemies despite being mostly
naturalized or born in Canada (Suigman 52). The internment served to protect Canadian citizens in
the West Coast, however, it achieved nothing. The internment of Japanese–Canadians was not
justified because the hardships faced were the result of racial prejudice as seen through the
justifications for the cruel camps, the dispossession of property and the silencing Japanese culture
for decades. The internment of Japanese–Canadians was immoral because of the racist justification
leading to the poor conditions in the camps. Japanese–Canadians were regarded with suspicion
during World War 2, due to the attacks at Pearl Harbour and the distrust that Caucasian people
possessed. As a result of blatant racial prejudice, symbols for Japanese–Canadians of the Second
World War would consist of the stench of manure in Hastings Park, white shirts with a red circle,
lack of space, loss of privacy, one suitcase and a 24–hour notice (Suigman 63). Families would be
separated and men were prohibited from seeing their wives and children at Hastings Park (Sunahara
50). Hastings Park was a facility where Japanese–Canadians were held and where men would later
be dispersed to work at road camps (Sunahara 50). The conditions here were worse for women.
They lived in tight areas with screaming children, distraught

The Pros And Cons Of Japanese Culture
Comparative politicians often describe Japanese culture as a Confucian collectivist culture that
emphasizes family and work group goals above individualistic needs (Haddad). Embedded in their
language, Japanese culture adheres to a hierarchal structure set in place by Confucian ideals.
Different from western ideologies such as the ideals of The United States and The United Kingdom,
these cultural beliefs are, consequently, seen by western countries as the root to key differences
within a state. Indeed, when attempting to interpret differences seen in foreign states with ideologies
distinct from western ideologies, comparative politicians will often resort to cultural arguments as a
default explanation. Yet, for many phenomena, cultural arguments alone are prone to several errors
that will often result in the generalization of a population's actions (Reed). While a cultural
argument seems to be a plausible explanation for events occurring in states with different cultures, a
cultural argument alone is not sufficient, instead creating a broad explanation for complex economic
and political events. One argument that is considered to have an insufficient cultural explanation is
the differences between litigation as an action to settle disputes between Western Countries and
Japan. In Japan, their population filed only 1,257 civil cases per 100,000 people in 1970. When
compared to the United States and Britain, the number of civil suits brought before the Japanese
court system is

Food And Westernization In The Elephant Vanishes By Haruki...
Haruki Murakami's The Elephant Vanishes is a collection of short stories, published in 1993.
Murakami is a Japanese author who has spent most of his life in the West. His writing style is
heavily influenced by his lifestyle and therefore he is not considered to be a traditional Japanese
author (Poole). The affects of westernization on the characters can be evaluated from their
conversations and relationships. There is at least one Western component in each short story and it
always has a relation to the plotline or the characters. Food, arts and romantic relationships are the
three main motifs in which the affects of western elements can be seen. Although these motifs may
not have a direct affect on the actions of the characters, there is always ... Show more content on

In almost every story, there is a romantic relationship between the characters. This relationship is
usually sexual and seems to be at the center of the plotline. It is not very common for Japanese
people to be so open about sexual relationships, but in The Elephant Vanishes, Murakami portrays
characters, which are very exposed about their romantic relationships. In "The Wind–Up Bird and
Tuesday's Woman", the narrator receives a call from an anonymous woman. Although he first
refuses to talk to the woman, he ends up having phone sex with her. 'I'm in bed right now' the
woman says. 'I just took a shower and have nothing on". The fact that the woman is so open to have
a sexual conversation with the narrator reflects the traces of westernization. On the other hand, the
fact that the narrator is not so comfortable with the situation he is in fulfills the reader's expectations
of a traditional Japanese plotline. A romantic relationship is present in almost every story and has a
great influence on the way the story unfolds by shaping the flow of the conversations. In "Family
Affair", the narrator is very exposed about his sex life, while his sister is not so comfortable talking
about sexual relationships. Once again, there is a conflict originated from the differentiation of two
cultures. In this case, the narrator represents a westernized, modern mind while his sister is a model
for a traditional Japanese mindset. "

Yukio Mishima's The Sailor Who Fell From Grace With The Sea
Yukio Mishima's The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea is set in the backdrop of post–war
Japan, which at the time faced a period of serious turmoil. Subsequent to World War II, the Japanese
encountered food shortages and homelessness in addition to a relinquishment of their cultural
identity as western influence increased. In The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea, Mishima
demonstrates his personal views towards the westernization of Japan. In the novel, Mishima
characterizes Fusako Kuroda by her actions and nontraditional lifestyle to represent Japan's
temptation to modernize in his criticism of western ideals. The lifestyle and personal characteristics
of Fusako as described by Mishima are indicative of her representation of western ... Show more

Her attempt to lure Ryuji into a romantic relationship is an example of this. In the beginning of the
novel, Fusako explains to Noboru that she "had invited Second Mate Ryuji Tsukazaki to dinner"
(Mishima 9). By initiating this relationship, Mishima portrays Fusako as a tempting and sensational
woman, which is the personification of Mishima's idea of westernization. Furthermore, Fusako
seductively attempts to entice Ryuji into her westernized lifestyle. Ryuji, the sailor, symbolizes
Japan's situation at that time, stuck between the opportunity to embrace westernization or fight to
retain the fleeting traditional Japanese culture. Ryuji embodies the current Japan in his vacillating
mindset, entangled in Fusako's temptations, and in essence symbolizes the limbo that the people of
Japan are stuck in. The citizens of Japan lack a cultural identity, and this can be inferred from Ryuji
often being unsure as to who he is, and this demonstrated when Mishima conveys that "Noboru
didn't realize Ryuji was sinking into a void" (Mishima 152). This description gives insight into
Ryuji's mind where he is sinking, unsure and confused, the same way Japan is being blinded by the
western goods and losing grip with their traditional cultural values. If Ryuji marries Fusako and
gives into the western way of life, it is the death of Japan as Mishima knows it. As a bigger picture,
Fusako's luring of Ryuji into

Stanislavski's Expectations Of Acting As The Imitation Of...
Acting, known by most as the imitation of life. Many theorists have gone to extreme lengths to try to
recreate the behaviors of man in everyday life, whether it be Stanislavski's method of using past
experiences, Chekhov's technique of imagining a situation, or naturalism's use of the environment.
But there are some that deny this goal of acting, they believe theatre can be so much more when it
isn't bound to the restraints of imitation. Tadashi Suzuki was one such man, who believed the goal of
acting should not be to be realistic, but for the actor to use all means necessary to convince the
audience of a truth. In order to do this, the actor must have complete control of his body, achieved
through following the Suzuki Method.

perfection, leaving failure as the only possible outcome. No actor has or will ever be able to master
the Suzuki Method of Acting, because it's not meant to be mastered, it raises the actor to his
maximum potential, and leads the actor to always strive to be even better. This can be reflected
through the exercises, many actors, while doing the exercises, tend to notice faults in their acting,
and correct them, without even needing the guide of a teacher. There are more specific goals that are
used to help guide the actor in his training. The actor must understand the different way in which the
feet contact the floor, which stems from nō, where the atmosphere is created through the placement
of the feet. The actor must keep the upper body free, but strong, not disregard it and only focus on
the lower body, because it would disrupt the center of gravity. The actor must be constantly focused

Pearl Harbor Research Paper
The event that brought forth the Idea to attack japan and destroy the cities of Hiroshima and
Nagasaki was Pearl Harbor. Japan had a history of executing surprise attacks before declaring war;
one main example is when japan invaded Port Arthur in the Russo– Japanese war which would
prove to be very successful . Many books were written prior to 1941 predicting an invasion of the
Hawaiian Islands to gain access to the United States mainland including 'The conflict of nations',
and 'The valor of ignorance' . The United States saw the military base on Hawaii as a point of power
in the pacific and a last defense of their home land. Japan saw Hawaii as at point of expansion and
an easy way for the United States to launch an attack on them. Attacking Pearl Harbor was not the
original plan for japan. Japan wanted to bring the United States to them, but Japanese commander–
in –Chief Isoroku Yamomoto pushed for an attack on the United States .pearl harbor was the home
to the United States naval fleet and many fuel reserves. One of the main objects of japan was to
destroy aircraft carriers and sink battle ships to put the United States fleet out of action and to
discourage the people of the United States to not join the World War. The Japanese army spent over
a year planning the attack and training pilots. The Japanese even created special torpedoes to operate
in pear harbors shallow waters .

Benefits Of Staying Single In Japan
Staying Single is Popular in Japan When people talk about what family is, the first image in my
mind is that a father and his son are sitting on the deep green grass beside a jewelry blue lake, and
colorful birds are singing while the sun is shining on their smiling faces, which is a good example
from "Once More to the Lake" (White). What is a family? In my opinion, a family is that the people
have the close relationship and share the responsibility for each other. In a family, people love each
other and follow the same value, and they share the same sorrow and happiness, and they support
each other, such as the father's helping his son to do carpentry from "The Inheritance of Tools"
(Sanders). Considering for these, a family seems like at least two persons in people's traditional
opinions. If more and more people want to stay single instead of getting married, what and how will
affect our society? I have some Japanese friends in International Education Center, which is an ESL
school for international students. They tell me that living single has been popular in Japan, and they
have some relatives who prefer to a single life. Staying single in Japan is increasing because of the
pressure of finances for supporting a family, and this kind of trend results in the growth rate of
population is declining, which gives a great challenge to Japanese society. There are more people
who want to stay single, which is a significant trend in Japan. The reason might be that it is more

Impact Of The Dodge Plan
POST–WAR JAPAN'S ECONOMIC MIRACLE The Dodge Plan of 1948 In the year 1947, Cold
War unrest had started building up in Eastern Asia that prompted the United States of America to
revise its policies towards Japan in order to accelerate its economic recovery. The Dodge Plan
conceived by Joseph Dodge in 1948 was implemented as a solution to bring Japan back to its
complete strength and economic recovery. The Dodge Plan focused on resolving the serious
problem of inflation and establishing a more stable Japan through three policies. First being a
balanced budget, followed by suspension of new loans from the Reconstruction Finance Bank (this
source of supply of money was identified as the root cause of inflation), and lastly, reducing as well
as completely eliminating subsidies. The above–mentioned policies were identified to aid in
accelerating the Japanese economy. Dodge's policies caused problems along the way in its
implementation but it created a path for recovery without the help of America. The Japanese were
encouraged to economize and accumulate capital through such a policy. The Korean War Boom The

Combining imported technology with their domestic innovation was translated in the inception of
the Japanese low–cost mass productions system. Technological improvements such as the one
mentioned above played a huge role in the country's economic growth, as improvement of
technology in one industry often influenced the growth of other industries. For instance, Japan's
steel industry was successful in improving the quality of steel used in manufacturing automobiles,
due to the technological process in the casing of parts; the automobile industry too benefited and
hence could reach a level where it could compete with its international

The For A Healthy And Portable Breakfast Snack Food
1. Soygo Yogurt fulfills the want for a healthy and portable breakfast or snack food. In addition, an
estimated 90% of East Asians have some form of lactose–intolerance, so a soy equivalent for a
traditionally dairy–based product will be highly demanded in a predominantly East Asian country
like Japan.
2. The target market for Soygo Yogurt is composed of employed, middle to upper class adults who
are likely working long hours and want a healthy and/or vegan breakfast/snack food that is portable
and does not require preparation. It is a perishable item that is not sold in large quantities; so
potential customers are likely to repurchase it whenever they go grocery shopping.

Because of this, Soygo yogurts do not come off as being exclusively a health food, which will allow
them to appeal to a wider demographic.
9. Japanese buyers will be willing to purchase Soygo yogurts because, as a people that are generally
very busy, they are likely to need a portable breakfast or snack food that does not require
preparation. Also, the fact that it is suitable for the large percentage of Japanese that are lactose–
intolerant and the approximately 2.7% of the population that is vegan further expands the potential
customer base.
10. One of the main selling points of Soygo yogurts is that they are not complex and require next to
no preparation.
11. No skill is required to install, use, maintain, or service this product.
12. A refrigerator is required to keep Soygo yogurts fresh.
13. Japan has a high Uncertainty Avoidance score, so the initial amount of inventory required is
likely to be relatively low. An estimated 50,000 units are initially needed, with more available for
when demand increases.
14. Unfortunately, Japan currently has a 10.6% tariff in place for all soy products, excluding soy

P&G Japan SK–II Case Study
Up to 1984, P&G's Japanese operation was a failure due to the following reasons: 1. P&G
did not take the time to determine the local needs based on the culture and common practices
amongst the Japanese people. The product development was based on Western markets and it was
assumed that it would streamline itself to other areas of the world. An example cited in this case
study was the use of tap water for laundry washes without implementing a range of temperatures.

the long term potential for growth and profitability. All the other major market players are already

The Japanese Culture Of Japan
The Japanese are a nation with a culture influenced by many yet uniquely Japanese and connected to
their past. They retain strong ties to their early legends, religions, and traditions while continuing to
progress with the rest of the world. With these ideas that have been passed down and preserved,
there have also been forms of dance and music that have been influenced by other countries, made
uniquely Japanese, and continued through today.
The Japanese people as we know them today were not the original inhabitants of the land. The
native people, the Ainu, were hunters and fishermen closer in resemblance to Caucasians. There is
now only a small group of them residing in the Northern section of Japan. The Japanese people are
believed, based on physical characteristics as well as language, to originate from central Asia.
Movement from mainland Asia continued throughout the history of Japan and played a large role in
how their culture developed. The country consists of four large islands all of which are lush and
mountainous. The people of Japan have survived because of their developments in agriculture,
supplemented by their fishing capabilities (Morton 6). Japanese religious ideas and beliefs have a
root in Shinto, a naturalistic religion with a focus in animism. Early Shinto legends express that the
land was created by, then inhabited by the gods Izanagi and Izanami. When Izanami died while
giving birth to the Fire God, Izanagi went to the underworld to retrieve her, only

Japanese have evolved intellectually and morally, but the Chinese have remained the same (Al–

racialization of the Chinese and Japanese peoples, he references World War II and other armed
conflicts, as stages of their barbarisms and savagery, particularly in manslaughter. He further
supports his imagination by claiming a first–hand experience and encounter that validates his
reading of history. In which one of the races–the Japanese– has progressed out of its savagery, and
the other–the Chinese–has not come out of its blood thirst. In this erasure of everything that

Essay on Prostitution in Japan: A Young Body Worth a Profit
Prostitution in Japan: A Young Body Worth a Profit
At a street corner, a young girl around the age of seventeen, dressed in a navy blue school uniform
and white socks, stands looking vacantly into the street. After a few minutes a middle–aged man
approaches the girl and offers to take her out to an expensive dinner; in addition, he offers her a
satisfying amount of pocket money. With a shy, quivering glance and a sweet smile the girl
graciously takes the man's arm. On the corner of areas like Shibuya, a central Tokyo entertainment

Other wise a man can stroll along the street of Shibuya, Ueno or other district areas that are favorite
hangouts for teenagers and pick up a young girl. Then he may take her to a karaoke clubroom or
somewhere private and start negotiating the price for the evening. Japanese men can also find
pleasure at "image clubs," where they pay about $150 an hour to live out their wildest fantasies
about schoolgirls (Kristof A6). In what are called telephone clubs, a man could pay a fee and then
wait in a room for a call from a woman during which the two parties will make an arrangement to
meet at another time for an enjo kosai. These clubs solicit women by advertising in magazines and
newspapers, on subway trains, and by direct mail. Kleenex tissues with the club's telephone number
and address are even distributed at train stations (Morrison 3). These outlets, major promoters of
"sex for money," have had a significant impact on the numbers of teenage girls engaging in
prostitution, aiding the teen prostitute with finding customers and aggressively luring new young
girls into prostitution. Allowing women to call at no charge, telephone clubs are one of the most
popular tools schoolgirls use to meet interested men.
The number of teenage prostitutes began to climb around 1974. By 1984 the number reached
alarming levels and is still increasing (Morrison 3). National Police Agency statistics for 1995 show

In listening to the Interactive Oral, I found that learning about the normality of Japanese society

appropriate to stand out in a crowd and be different or unique. Eriko is an extreme example of the
reverse of the norm of Japanese society. She wears tons of makeup knowingly which makes her face

What Caused Japanese People To Immigrate
Factors that caused the Japanese people to immigrate to the United States were the promises of
peace and prosperity. In 1868 Japan underwent a massive urbanization causing farms to be
destroyed and farmers to be out of work. Japan also isolated themselves from trade to Europe and
other nations, so there wasn't a lot of work to be found in Japan at this time. As news of the
economy rising in the United States, so did the temptations of the Japanese people to immigrate to
this prosperous land. They boarded ships going east to the archipelago of Hawaii and the West Coast
of the United States.
Upon arriving to these areas, however, they were not treated with respect. Farmers would not allow

Corporate Governance and Control in Japan
Corporate governance and control in Japan: can the barriers to foreign takeover activity in Japan
ever be removed? Japan's seeming impenetrability to foreign takeovers, largely due to the prevailing
corporate culture and governance that allegedly hinders such takeovers, has defined business firms
and companies in the last decades (Lebrun, 2001; Gerlach, 1992; Maher and Wong, 1994; Seeman,
1986; Seeman, 1987; Stern, 1998). Such barriers have gradually been buoyed down by the
worldwide economic recession of the recent times– an indication that while these barriers may not
be totally lifted, the prospect of reducing it is optimistic (Itoh and Vestring, 2001; Larimer, 1999;
Seeman, 1986; Seeman, 1987; JETRO, 2002;). Japanese inter–corporate relationships are considered
in terms of three different structures of interaction: corporate groupings, financial centrality, and
industrial interdependency. Almost all decisions in Japanese business are group decisions, which
require virtually unanimous support from the members of the team making the decision Foreign
firms, which, to a great extent, need to acquire market shares in Japan, the nation with the world's
greatest trade surplus, find their way to major acquisitions in Japan virtually blocked by Japanese
customs. They face substantial barriers to acquiring Japanese companies. With Japanese PERs

JAPAN'S NATIONALISM AFTER WORLD WAR II: ANALYZE OF THE DISTINGUISH
ELEMENTS OF JAPAN'S NATIONALISM IN COMPARE TO OTHER REGION Background:
Nationalism in Japan has something different than other region because of its unique nature due to
cultural, traditions and historical background. Japan as a country has never experienced division
socially in terms of ethnicity, languages, and religions like other nations. As of Boyd C. Shafer:
Nationalism is 'that sentiment unifying a group of people who have a real or imagined common
historical experience and a common aspiration to live together as a separate group in the future'
(Cited in Eckstein 1999: 3). Nationalism was accepted by the Japanese in to two forms: the 'statism',

something that makes it unique and distinct from other countries. However, there are plenty of
researches and data available in regard to nationalism in Japan, but I feel it will be useful to do

nationalism among the people by Japanese. The importances of afore–mentioned questions are to

achieving that goal. Japan tried to unite the people by taking some unique measurements and

During the Tokugawa period, Japan was mainly a closed off country as it wanted little to do with
being influenced by the outside world, and particularly, by the West. Japan was willing to dabble
with outside influences on what was becoming a national cuisine, but refused to give up it's national
identity. Introducing foreign aspects to Japanese cuisine was acceptable as long as Japan maintained
power and control over how these aspects would manifest. In Tokugawa period Nagasaki was a

Shippoku dining included not only imitation of Chinese–style dishes, but also the imitation of
Chinese dining culture. Dishes were communal, which was not common for Japanese cuisine of the
time, and forced shippoku dining to be quite a social experience. Dishes and utensils used for
shippoku were supposed to "look Chinese" and have "Chinese decorations," but the main distinction
between the dishes and utensils used for shippoku from everyday dishes and utensils were what
shippoku diners called them, which shows just how hard they were trying to imitate Chinese dining
culture–an ordinary bowl could turn into a shippoku bowl if you called it the right thing; everything
about shippoku dining was supposed to sound Chinese in both names and pronunciation. This
imitation, however, was explicitly an imitation, which is evident from how hard they tried to look
Chinese. There was less emphasis on authenticity and modestly taking inspiration from Chinese
culture, rather they were blatantly imitating the culture as something that was "other." This attitude

Essay on The Sound of Waves by Yukio Mishima
Customs and beliefs is what make up a tradition, and tradition is the way one lives their life. In the
novel, The Sound of Waves, Yukio Mishima exposed his own view on Japanese traditionalism.
Throughout this novel, it is shown that Yukio Mishima believed that Japanese tradition consists of
an organized social class, the Bushido code, and going after what one truly believes should be theirs.
Mishima illustrated these personal views of Japanese traditionalism through the actions of the
Shinji. First off, Mishima illustrated the importance of the social class within the lives of the
Japanese people, and Japan in general. For example, Shinji said, "It's all because I'm poor (113)."
Social ranks played a huge part in Japan. When one ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At various points throughout the novel, Mishima illustrated his view on the tradition of the Bushido
code by using Shinji as an example. Shinji demonstrated the aspect of politeness through the
multiple times he brought part of his catch of the day to the lighthouse keepers. Since Mishima is
the one who created this character, Shinji, he showed his personal views through Shinji's actions.
Politeness was one of the several aspects that Mishima supported revolving around the Bushido
code. Another example of the Bushido code that is shown by Shinji's actions is courage. Shinji was
courageous enough to swim out in the rough waves to tie a lifeline to the buoy. Once again, this
portrays Mishima's view on the Bushido code. Because Mishima wrote about courageous actions,
this showed that courage is a major part for one to be considered Bushido. Overall, part of
Mishima's view on Japanese traditionalism revolved around the Bushido code. The protagonist,
Shinji, in The Sound of Waves can be contrasted to the protagonist, the narrator, in Balzac and the
Little Chinese Seamstress. Shinji found a girl, Hatsue, which he loved, and pursued to go after her
even when it was forbidden by her father. On the other hand, the narrator loved the Little

In Orientalism, Edward Said claims that, "as much as the West itself, the Orient is an idea that has a
history and a tradition of thought, imagery, and vocabulary that have given it reality and presence in

geographical realities of the Orient called "Orientalism" is a way of coming to terms with the Orient,
or to be less geographically specific, the Other. Although Said defines Orientalism to be specifically

In other words, not only construction but deconstruction of the dubious entity "Orient" require the
West (the Orient's agent) to speak for the Orient. Another problem is what Said calls "a triumph of
Orientalism" (323) today, the major source of which is no longer Britain or France, but the United
States, the democratically totalizing economy power. It means cultural domination on the one hand
("Orientals" educated in the United States repeat the Orientalist cliché), and economic absorption of
poor nations on the other (consumerism in the Orient). A simple example Said takes up is "the
paradox of an Arab regarding himself as an 'Arab' of the sort put out by Hollywood" (325). The
Orient, in short, playacts its image as imagined by the West. This is far more problematic than the
former form of Orientalism because the subject position of an "Oriental" is now realized only as the
subject that (re–)presents itself as the Other before the Western eyes, as imagined by the West: and
this Western gaze is what the Oriental subject identifies her/himself. It is disappointing in a sense
that Said does not develop his arguments more than the idea that this phenomenon of cultural

Japanese Culture Shock Stereotypes Essay
Culture shock stereotypes I feel that coming to Japan helped break a lot of assumptions about
Japanese culture and also confirm knowledge I knew only from textbooks. The trip also made me

irony that was ever present. There were many customs both old and new I appreciated on the trip

made it their own.
One of my most memorable experiences was on the second night of Japan when we went to a

losing they'd chant wave their flags and dance or clap their hands. They blew up balloons we
thought until they burst but it was actually to let them go to make noise to cheer their team on. They

War on Japan Essay
through history, man always seems to be at war. In some cases he is the attacker, in others the
defender. In both cases, these wars are broken down into two basic elements, the battles that are
fought and the individuals who fight them. The elements conflict, courage, fear, cowardice, heroism,
victory, and defeat make up the exploits of war we record in our history books. This paper will deal
with war, more specifically, a special exploit within one of the most significant wars ever
experienced.
World War II involved millions of fighting men around the world. In Europe, Hitler and Germany
were the enemy. In the Far East, Japan was the enemy. To America, Japan was probably more hated

What if Army bombers could take off an aircraft carrier? Low tried his idea on Admiral King. King
thought the idea had potential so he sent it on to Captain Donald Duncan to turn his plan into fact.
This he did, and the Tokyo Raid became fact instead of fiction.
The first step in the plan was finding a leader. General Arnold requested Lieutenant Colonel James
Dolittle as the man to select the plane and the men for the mission. Dolittle accepted the challenge
without hesitation. Arnold let him know in no uncertain terms that he was to be a planner not a pilot.
As Doolittle went to work on the project, he saw a lot of problems. First of all, carrier landings were
impossible for twin engine bombers. Next, the total air trip was eleven hundred miles. The closest
landing area would be in Russia, but Joseph Stalin would not let them land there because he didn't
want to be invaded by Japan since he already had his hands full with the Germans. Fortunately,
China said it was all right to land there but they said it reluctantly. With these considerations and
others, Doolittle determined that the chances of the mission succeeding was fifty–fifty. Despite the
odds, the decision was made to begin the project.
As the first step, despite Arnold, Doolittle wrote himself into the plan as a pathfinder. Doolittle's job
during the attack would be to light up Tokyo with incendiary

Japan's Whaling Exemption Essay

  • 1. Whaling Exemption Essay I'd like discuss about an exemption for whaling in this week. One of the reason I chose the topic is that I'm originally from Japan, and the exemption is the one of the biggest issue Japanese should dispute. My answers to the questions are below. 1. I totally disagree with the Norwegian and Japanese exemption for whaling even if it's their tradition. The Japanese government claims hunting whale is based on their traditional culture and Japanese fishers have hunted whales for few hundred years so that none of foreign countries has right to control if Japanese people should eat whales or not. Whales were important protein for Japanese people between 1940s and 1960s, and they killed more than 24 grand whales in 1964 (BBC, 2016). In addition, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is very difficult to find the way all of the international resolutions fairly works for all countries. Each country has their individual culture, and sometimes the culture is hardly understood for other countries. In globalization, the world trade is one of the most important sector in all countries, and WTO has a crucial role. It never should be controlled by few dominant countries, such as the US. Anytime WTO enacts international rules, all decision should be based on certain research and ethical purposes. Each of nations has different idea. For example, the reason 94% of Australian are against whaling is that they think that whales are scared animals, whereas Japanese or Norwegian people think whales are the same meat as beef and pork. There is no answer to decide which opinion is justice. However, if nations' activities give critical damages to environment, nations have to decide to stop their activities to preserve nature. And all of prohibition should be based on scientific facts but should not be decided by individual perspective. I have no particular idea who serve on WTO, but I think it shouldn't be consisted of only few dominant countries. 4. I define "cultural activities" is phenomenon by experiences of local life, tradition, or religion. Each nations has their unique cultural activities. Globalization has made nations unified. • 3. Japan 's Identity And Cultural Identity Harumi Befu is an Emeritus Professor of Anthropological Sciences in the School of Humanities and Sciences at Stanford University. He has published in both English and Japanese journals, and his research interests include the social and analysis aspects of Japan's globalisation, and analysis of Japan's nationality and cultural identity. In his article "Concepts of Japan, Japanese culture and the Japanese", he discusses in a strong and unbiased method the reality of what Japan truly is. However, despite the strength of his article there are the negatives, where he does not address any solutions to the issues he raises. When most people think of Japan, it is the main and central island of Honshu, with their culture and language being the first thing that comes to mind. The climate, culture, language and people of Honshu have always been praised in various means of media such as paintings and stories. Resulting with Japan's minor islands like Hokkaido and Okinawa and those who live in those areas are often forgotten, same with individual cultures and dialects of Japan as a whole. Befu attempts to discuss in order to provide a different approach to common views of Japan by discussing how diverse, multi–cultural and multi–national the country is. Befu is also not afraid to discuss the darker sides of Japanese thought and society by addressing various issues, such as the notion of "essentialism" that is evident within Japanese culture, which dismisses the idea that Japanese ... • 5. Essay about Comparison of Japanese and American Cultures COMPARISON OF JAPANESE AND AMERICAN CULTURES As Mahatma Gandhi said, "No culture can live, if it attempts to be exclusive" (Mahatma). Our culture identifies who we are and how we behave in social environments and provides us with a foundation in which to live our lives and raise our families. Each individual culture has certain customs and courtesies that are important. Exposure to the cultures of others can be intimidating and can leave a person feeling confused and unsure about how they fit in (Schaefer 60). Culture shock can leave a person feeling out of place in an unfamiliar culture (Schaefer 60). Our diverse societies demand understanding and acceptance of other cultures. Guests are usually modest and reserved when they are visiting and will be offered the most comfortable seat in the home (Japan). When offered a meal it is customary for the guest to hesitate slightly before accepting it and will then accept with gratitude (Japan). Guests do not usually offer compliments on household items, as this may embarrass the host (Japan). • 7. Nitobe Inazo's Influence On American Culture Nitobe Inazo and his widely international popular book, influenced the way Japan was viewed by Americans and the rest of the world during modern times (1900–45). It is questionable whether or not he was a reliable source. However, without a doubt, Inazo impacted to international view of Japan, during a time of imperialistic military events leading up to the fall of Japan at the end of World War II. Nitobe Inazo was an educator, author and diplomat best known for his book Bushido: The Soul of Japan. Nitobe was born into the Nambu Clan, which were made nobility during his life. He was the son of a samurai who lived during the Meji and Taisho periods in Japan. After his early life, Inazo, studied English Literature and Economics at Tokyo University. Then in 1884, he traveled to the United States, where he stayed for three years, and studied political science and economics at Johns Hopkins. Throughout his time in Baltimore, Maryland he became a member of a Quaker society. Through the society, he met his wife Mary Patterson Elkson. In 1891, Inazo return back to Japan to fulfil a teaching position. Upon returning to Japan, he has received one of his five doctoral degrees and had published books in English and German. • 9. Taking a Brief Look at the Work of Carlos Ghosn When Carlos Ghosn becoming the new CEO, the managers and employees was not happy about it because they don't know what is his intentions. He whom was known as the "Le Cost Killer" did not even blink an eye when changing the current organizational culture and the internal processes of Nissan. The main reason of the resistance in Nissan was because of Ghosn's Brazilian ethnicity and also his Lebanese heritage and the difference in culture way of approaching the problems are really different from the people of Japan. Everyone knows that the Japanese management culture is the masculine(manly) type with large power distance and that the Japanese people are really obedient towards the higher ups (Hofstede). Carlos whom previously had shown a proactive management type of style at Renault where he managed to improve the cost–efficiencies and because of his good management record, he was being headhunted to become the CEO of Nissan. In a country like Japan, one usually assume that the new CEO should be someone who knows the local culture and customs of Japan but in this case however Carlos was probably aware of the fact that regardless of his shortage of knowledge about the culture itself, he had an advantage for having worked on four different countries with different cultures and was able to overcome the cultural differences. Back in 1991, Nissan was capable of producing good quality cars but the company itself had ignored the customers' needs of "stylish and innovative cars". ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Japan's Economic Efforts After the Earthquake and Tsunami... Marketing Japan: Towards a Better Future In the month of March 2011, Japan was struck hard by a natural disaster. This earthquake was known as the "Great East Japan Earthquake" which caused a tsunami (Euromonitor, 2013). Tourism in Japan was at a standstill for about year until 2012. During the year of 2011, Japanese people did not travel and "people refrained from leisure activities" (Euromonitor, 2013). About a year after the earthquake, tourism grew and there was "an increased desire to travel" (Euromonitor, 2013). Japanese government is looking to focus on opening up tourism "markets of Southeast Asian countries" (Euromonitor, 2013). The outcome "of inbound visitors is expected to increase by 7%" (Euromonitor, 2013). With the relaxed visa requirements, there has been a fast growth of tourists to Japan in 2012. The highest number of inbound arrivals were from Thailand and increased 77% with 257,000 trips (Euromonitor, 2013). Under the campaign there were promotions such as TV shows in Indonesia focusing on Japanese culture. Target Market The target market of Japan is the visitors from the Southeast Asia region. The Southeast Asia region includes Thai, Malaysian, and Indonesia. By targeting these visitors, it is a new hope for "promising markets for Japan's tourism industry". Japan should also target the increased retiree population. In Japan the senior citizens have a passion for travelling. Japan's travel companies have accommodated this target market. • 13. People In Japanese Internment Camps On December 7, 1941 the Japanese empire attacked Pearl Harbor. 2,400 Americans were killed and 1,200 injured. President Franklin D. Roosevelt immediately took action. In February 19, 1942 he signed the executive order 9066. This executive order gave military army's immense power. They were to take everyone with Japanese ancestry to internment camps were they would be held captive. All of these military areas would exclude all the people of Japanese ancestry, just because they were considered "dangerous". The Japanese people did not know if they would be imprisoned or deported. They would be imprisoned or deported even if they only had 1/16th of Japanese blood. 110,000 Japanese people were relocated in camps. These people had to leave everything ... A large amount of Japanese Americans died due to inadequate medical care while others were killed by guards for not following the rules. It was all as in a prison there was guard towers, barbed wire and the people didn't have the right to leave whenever they wanted if they did try to leave or escape they would be shot and killed. Their life was extremely restricted. In 1945 all internees were freed almost all their belongings were in ruins in World War 2 more than 20,000 Japanese Americans served in the U.S.A army. Essay on Japanese Internment in Canada The core of the Japanese experience in Canada lies in the shameful and almost undemocratic suspension of human rights that the Canadian government committed during World War II. As a result, thousands of Japanese were uprooted to be imprisoned in internment camps miles away from their homes. While only a small percentage of the Japanese living in Canada were actually nationals of Japan, those who were Canadian born were, without any concrete evidence, continuously being associated with a country that was nothing but foreign to them. Branded as "enemy aliens", the Japanese Canadians soon came to the realization that their beloved nation harboured so much hate and anti–Asian sentiments that Canada was becoming just as foreign to them as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The initial reaction to Pearl Harbor was to take cautious emergency actions to avert civil unrest. Soon, the Canadian government passed the War Measures Act. It gave permission to intern all undesirable Japanese, tie up every Japanese–owned fishing boat in British Columbia, close all Japanese language schools, forbid the publishing of newspapers in Japanese, and seize all Japanese property. All of which were subsequently carried out. In 1941, there were twenty–three thousand five hundred Japanese persons in Canada, residing mainly on the coast of British Columbia. Of that, six thousand seven hundred were Canadian born, seven thousand were naturalized citizens, and the rest were nationals of Japan. However, nothing could make any difference. To the typical, white British Columbian, the Japanese were all lower–class citizens. Five hours after the attack on Pearl Harbour, forty–eight Japanese planes bombed Hong Kong where two Canadian battalions were stationed, and were inflicted with heavy casualties. The "problem" of the resident Japanese in British Columbia was then quickly set into the mainstream focus. Prior to declaring war on Japan, Mackenzie King had stated that the "enemy country" had "wantonly and treacherously" attacked British territory, and that "Japan's actions [were] a threat to the defence and freedom of Canada." ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Government officials insisted they could not trust anyone of Japanese origin. The Japanese Canadians had unfortunately come to witness the true extent of the bitterness that reeked from the Caucasian population. In addition to the feelings of hostility towards the Japanese, all their hard work to successfully develop a stable living became worthless as evacuation and internment were seen to be the only logical solutions. The "partial" evacuation of the Japanese nationals was still not enough. All had to go. A multitude of political, economic and social organizations, as well as other pressure groups from British Columbia began a constant flow of propaganda against the Japanese. They demanded that further, immediate action be implemented. It was the pressure from these regional groups, who were anxious to expel the Japanese forever, that eventually propelled the government to sway in their favour. By early 1942, it was decided that all Japanese Canadians be rounded up and relocated to the interior of British Columbia where they were to be held in detention camps. Mass internment had begun. The Japanese were fingerprinted, photographed, and then given identification numbers, which were considered as "formal tokens of their second–class status". Just one suitcase was allowed to be brought to the camps, while all other property was taken into government possession to be auctioned off for costs of the internment. • 19. Japanese Gender Inequality About the women discrimination or gender gap, I think Japan has a longest history that women were discriminated by men. To improve those gender gap, let's look at Japan's FACT as a "BAD EXAMPLE". They strengthened the thoughts of women discrimination in historical era of samurai. After that, they didn't accept any "Gentlemen's behavior" coming from Western countries, so that it becomes a huge part of the culture that Japanese men look down on women. In 20's century, I think most of Japanese men and even Japanese women thought that husband going out for work and his wife stay at home, do the house work, and seeing their children is quite an ordinary thing. This thought is what we call women discrimination and we have to change it. According to the World Economic Forum's Global Gender Gap Report in 2012, Japan ranked 101 out of 135 ranked countries. That means there are 100 countries that were determined to have fewer gender–based disparities than Japan. Now, this score is based on four factors: economic participation and opportunity (which is essentially Japanese women in the workplace), educational attainment, health and survival, and political empowerment. Japan does really well in educational attainment and health and survival. The scores that hurt Japan the most are the ones related to women in the work place. It's well–known that Japanese women don't have the same job opportunities as men in Japan. The number one reason I hear about this is because Japanese women ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

However, the most important thing which affects our communication is our backpack, which means the environment that we raised in. we carry this backpack every time when we communicate with others, so in this essay I am going to demonstrate my interpersonal communication behavior. First of all, I am going to demonstrate what about my communication is unique to my specific circumstances. The way of communication is different when I was talking with Americans and Japanese. Whenever I talk with American people, I try to be more open mind. Since I came here in NDSU, I have a lot of opportunities to communicate with Americans. I realized that Americans are so friendly, so I made effort to adapt American culture. Instead of that, when I communicate with Japanese people, I will be more shy. In my experiences, Japanese people tend to do not like the too friendly people at the first time. Thus, I pay attention to not so be friendly for Japanese during the ice breaker. As a result, when I communicate with Japanese, I will be like a coconuts. It means that the first time is unfriendly like the shell of coconuts but the inside is very sweet and flexible. Instead, when I communicate with American, I am like a peach. • 23. The Internment Of Japanese-Canada The internment of Japanese–Canadians was not only cruel but also immoral in a multitude of ways. In the Second World War, Japanese–Canadians were seen as enemies despite being mostly naturalized or born in Canada (Suigman 52). The internment served to protect Canadian citizens in the West Coast, however, it achieved nothing. The internment of Japanese–Canadians was not justified because the hardships faced were the result of racial prejudice as seen through the justifications for the cruel camps, the dispossession of property and the silencing Japanese culture for decades. The internment of Japanese–Canadians was immoral because of the racist justification leading to the poor conditions in the camps. Japanese–Canadians were regarded with suspicion during World War 2, due to the attacks at Pearl Harbour and the distrust that Caucasian people possessed. As a result of blatant racial prejudice, symbols for Japanese–Canadians of the Second World War would consist of the stench of manure in Hastings Park, white shirts with a red circle, lack of space, loss of privacy, one suitcase and a 24–hour notice (Suigman 63). Families would be separated and men were prohibited from seeing their wives and children at Hastings Park (Sunahara 50). • 25. The Pros And Cons Of Japanese Culture Comparative politicians often describe Japanese culture as a Confucian collectivist culture that emphasizes family and work group goals above individualistic needs (Haddad). Embedded in their language, Japanese culture adheres to a hierarchal structure set in place by Confucian ideals. Different from western ideologies such as the ideals of The United States and The United Kingdom, these cultural beliefs are, consequently, seen by western countries as the root to key differences within a state. Indeed, when attempting to interpret differences seen in foreign states with ideologies distinct from western ideologies, comparative politicians will often resort to cultural arguments as a default explanation. Yet, for many phenomena, cultural arguments alone are prone to several errors that will often result in the generalization of a population's actions (Reed). While a cultural argument seems to be a plausible explanation for events occurring in states with different cultures, a cultural argument alone is not sufficient, instead creating a broad explanation for complex economic and political events. One argument that is considered to have an insufficient cultural explanation is the differences between litigation as an action to settle disputes between Western Countries and Japan. In Japan, their population filed only 1,257 civil cases per 100,000 people in 1970. Murakami is a Japanese author who has spent most of his life in the West. His writing style is heavily influenced by his lifestyle and therefore he is not considered to be a traditional Japanese author (Poole). The affects of westernization on the characters can be evaluated from their conversations and relationships. There is at least one Western component in each short story and it always has a relation to the plotline or the characters. Food, arts and romantic relationships are the three main motifs in which the affects of western elements can be seen. Although these motifs may not have a direct affect on the actions of the characters, there is always ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In almost every story, there is a romantic relationship between the characters. This relationship is usually sexual and seems to be at the center of the plotline. It is not very common for Japanese people to be so open about sexual relationships, but in The Elephant Vanishes, Murakami portrays characters, which are very exposed about their romantic relationships. In "The Wind–Up Bird and Tuesday's Woman", the narrator receives a call from an anonymous woman. Although he first refuses to talk to the woman, he ends up having phone sex with her. 'I'm in bed right now' the woman says. 'I just took a shower and have nothing on". The fact that the woman is so open to have a sexual conversation with the narrator reflects the traces of westernization. On the other hand, the fact that the narrator is not so comfortable with the situation he is in fulfills the reader's expectations of a traditional Japanese plotline. A romantic relationship is present in almost every story and has a great influence on the way the story unfolds by shaping the flow of the conversations. In "Family Affair", the narrator is very exposed about his sex life, while his sister is not so comfortable talking about sexual relationships. Once again, there is a conflict originated from the differentiation of two cultures. In this case, the narrator represents a westernized, modern mind while his sister is a model for a traditional Japanese mindset. " ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Yukio Mishima's The Sailor Who Fell From Grace With The Sea Yukio Mishima's The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea is set in the backdrop of post–war Japan, which at the time faced a period of serious turmoil. Subsequent to World War II, the Japanese encountered food shortages and homelessness in addition to a relinquishment of their cultural identity as western influence increased. In The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea, Mishima demonstrates his personal views towards the westernization of Japan. Her attempt to lure Ryuji into a romantic relationship is an example of this. In the beginning of the novel, Fusako explains to Noboru that she "had invited Second Mate Ryuji Tsukazaki to dinner" (Mishima 9). By initiating this relationship, Mishima portrays Fusako as a tempting and sensational woman, which is the personification of Mishima's idea of westernization. Furthermore, Fusako seductively attempts to entice Ryuji into her westernized lifestyle. Ryuji, the sailor, symbolizes Japan's situation at that time, stuck between the opportunity to embrace westernization or fight to retain the fleeting traditional Japanese culture. Ryuji embodies the current Japan in his vacillating mindset, entangled in Fusako's temptations, and in essence symbolizes the limbo that the people of Japan are stuck in. The citizens of Japan lack a cultural identity, and this can be inferred from Ryuji often being unsure as to who he is, and this demonstrated when Mishima conveys that "Noboru didn't realize Ryuji was sinking into a void" (Mishima 152). This description gives insight into Ryuji's mind where he is sinking, unsure and confused, the same way Japan is being blinded by the western goods and losing grip with their traditional cultural values. If Ryuji marries Fusako and gives into the western way of life, it is the death of Japan as Mishima knows it. As a bigger picture, Fusako's luring of Ryuji into ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Many theorists have gone to extreme lengths to try to recreate the behaviors of man in everyday life, whether it be Stanislavski's method of using past experiences, Chekhov's technique of imagining a situation, or naturalism's use of the environment. But there are some that deny this goal of acting, they believe theatre can be so much more when it isn't bound to the restraints of imitation. Tadashi Suzuki was one such man, who believed the goal of acting should not be to be realistic, but for the actor to use all means necessary to convince the audience of a truth. Japan had a history of executing surprise attacks before declaring war; one main example is when japan invaded Port Arthur in the Russo– Japanese war which would prove to be very successful . Many books were written prior to 1941 predicting an invasion of the Hawaiian Islands to gain access to the United States mainland including 'The conflict of nations', and 'The valor of ignorance' . The United States saw the military base on Hawaii as a point of power in the pacific and a last defense of their home land. Japan wanted to bring the United States to them, but Japanese commander– in –Chief Isoroku Yamomoto pushed for an attack on the United States .pearl harbor was the home to the United States naval fleet and many fuel reserves. One of the main objects of japan was to destroy aircraft carriers and sink battle ships to put the United States fleet out of action and to discourage the people of the United States to not join the World War. Benefits Of Staying Single In Japan Staying Single is Popular in Japan When people talk about what family is, the first image in my mind is that a father and his son are sitting on the deep green grass beside a jewelry blue lake, and colorful birds are singing while the sun is shining on their smiling faces, which is a good example from "Once More to the Lake" (White). What is a family? In my opinion, a family is that the people have the close relationship and share the responsibility for each other. In a family, people love each other and follow the same value, and they share the same sorrow and happiness, and they support each other, such as the father's helping his son to do carpentry from "The Inheritance of Tools" (Sanders). Considering for these, a family seems like at least two persons in people's traditional opinions. If more and more people want to stay single instead of getting married, what and how will affect our society? I have some Japanese friends in International Education Center, which is an ESL school for international students. Impact Of The Dodge Plan POST–WAR JAPAN'S ECONOMIC MIRACLE The Dodge Plan of 1948 In the year 1947, Cold War unrest had started building up in Eastern Asia that prompted the United States of America to revise its policies towards Japan in order to accelerate its economic recovery. The Dodge Plan conceived by Joseph Dodge in 1948 was implemented as a solution to bring Japan back to its complete strength and economic recovery. The Dodge Plan focused on resolving the serious problem of inflation and establishing a more stable Japan through three policies. First being a balanced budget, followed by suspension of new loans from the Reconstruction Finance Bank (this source of supply of money was identified as the root cause of inflation), and lastly, reducing as well as completely eliminating subsidies. They retain strong ties to their early legends, religions, and traditions while continuing to progress with the rest of the world. With these ideas that have been passed down and preserved, there have also been forms of dance and music that have been influenced by other countries, made uniquely Japanese, and continued through today. The Japanese people as we know them today were not the original inhabitants of the land. The native people, the Ainu, were hunters and fishermen closer in resemblance to Caucasians. There is now only a small group of them residing in the Northern section of Japan. The Japanese people are believed, based on physical characteristics as well as language, to originate from central Asia. Allowing women to call at no charge, telephone clubs are one of the most popular tools schoolgirls use to meet interested men. The number of teenage prostitutes began to climb around 1974. By 1984 the number reached alarming levels and is still increasing (Morrison 3). National Police Agency statistics for 1995 show that 5,841 female minors were involved in ... In Japanese society, it is not considered appropriate to stand out in a crowd and be different or unique. Eriko is an extreme example of the reverse of the norm of Japanese society. She wears tons of makeup knowingly which makes her face lit up compared to the norm of using makeup to simply enhance natural beauty. Apart from this, being transgender only allows her to stick out even further, in a time and society when transgender surgery is illegal. Even her death contrasts Japanese society, where there is only one murder for every 100,000 people. Originally, I saw Eriko and her life as things ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 56. What Caused Japanese People To Immigrate Factors that caused the Japanese people to immigrate to the United States were the promises of peace and prosperity. In 1868 Japan underwent a massive urbanization causing farms to be destroyed and farmers to be out of work. Japan also isolated themselves from trade to Europe and other nations, so there wasn't a lot of work to be found in Japan at this time. As news of the economy rising in the United States, so did the temptations of the Japanese people to immigrate to this prosperous land. They boarded ships going east to the archipelago of Hawaii and the West Coast of the United States. Upon arriving to these areas, however, they were not treated with respect. • 58. Corporate Governance and Control in Japan Corporate governance and control in Japan: can the barriers to foreign takeover activity in Japan ever be removed? Japan's seeming impenetrability to foreign takeovers, largely due to the prevailing corporate culture and governance that allegedly hinders such takeovers, has defined business firms and companies in the last decades (Lebrun, 2001; Gerlach, 1992; Maher and Wong, 1994; Seeman, 1986; Seeman, 1987; Stern, 1998). Such barriers have gradually been buoyed down by the worldwide economic recession of the recent times– an indication that while these barriers may not be totally lifted, the prospect of reducing it is optimistic (Itoh and Vestring, 2001; Larimer, 1999; Seeman, 1986; Seeman, 1987; JETRO, 2002;). Japanese inter–corporate relationships are considered in terms of three different structures of interaction: corporate groupings, financial centrality, and industrial interdependency. Almost all decisions in Japanese business are group decisions, which require virtually unanimous support from the members of the team making the decision Foreign firms, which, to a great extent, need to acquire market shares in Japan, the nation with the world's greatest trade surplus, find their way to major acquisitions in Japan virtually blocked by Japanese customs. They face substantial barriers to acquiring Japanese companies. With Japanese PERs approaching the 100 level, most foreigners will hardly find Japanese firms a bargain. Effects Of Nationalism In Japan JAPAN'S NATIONALISM AFTER WORLD WAR II: ANALYZE OF THE DISTINGUISH ELEMENTS OF JAPAN'S NATIONALISM IN COMPARE TO OTHER REGION Background: Nationalism in Japan has something different than other region because of its unique nature due to cultural, traditions and historical background. Japan as a country has never experienced division socially in terms of ethnicity, languages, and religions like other nations. As of Boyd C. Shafer: Nationalism is 'that sentiment unifying a group of people who have a real or imagined common historical experience and a common aspiration to live together as a separate group in the future' (Cited in Eckstein 1999: 3). However, there are plenty of researches and data available in regard to nationalism in Japan, but I feel it will be useful to do research specifically on the uniqueness and those measurements that have taken while enhancing nationalism among the people by Japanese. The importances of afore–mentioned questions are to analyze and to give lesson about the characteristics and types of nationalism which happened to enhance and empower Japan throughout the history for other post–war countries that are failed in achieving that goal. • 67. Shippoku Dining During the Tokugawa period, Japan was mainly a closed off country as it wanted little to do with being influenced by the outside world, and particularly, by the West. Japan was willing to dabble with outside influences on what was becoming a national cuisine, but refused to give up it's national identity. Introducing foreign aspects to Japanese cuisine was acceptable as long as Japan maintained power and control over how these aspects would manifest. In Tokugawa period Nagasaki was a regional site that attracted many Chinese settlers. Influenced by these Chinese settlers, an eating trend called shippoku became popular. Shippoku dining included not only imitation of Chinese–style dishes, but also the imitation of Chinese dining culture. Dishes were communal, which was not common for Japanese cuisine of the time, and forced shippoku dining to be quite a social experience. Dishes and utensils used for shippoku were supposed to "look Chinese" and have "Chinese decorations," but the main distinction between the dishes and utensils used for shippoku from everyday dishes and utensils were what shippoku diners called them, which shows just how hard they were trying to imitate Chinese dining culture–an ordinary bowl could turn into a shippoku bowl if you called it the right thing; everything about shippoku dining was supposed to sound Chinese in both names and pronunciation. This imitation, however, was explicitly an imitation, which is evident from how hard they tried to look Chinese. There was less emphasis on authenticity and modestly taking inspiration from Chinese culture, rather they were blatantly imitating the culture as something that was "other." • 69. Essay on The Sound of Waves by Yukio Mishima Customs and beliefs is what make up a tradition, and tradition is the way one lives their life. In the novel, The Sound of Waves, Yukio Mishima exposed his own view on Japanese traditionalism. Throughout this novel, it is shown that Yukio Mishima believed that Japanese tradition consists of an organized social class, the Bushido code, and going after what one truly believes should be theirs. Mishima illustrated these personal views of Japanese traditionalism through the actions of the Shinji. First off, Mishima illustrated the importance of the social class within the lives of the Japanese people, and Japan in general. For example, Shinji said, "It's all because I'm poor (113)." Social ranks played a huge part in Japan. When one ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At various points throughout the novel, Mishima illustrated his view on the tradition of the Bushido code by using Shinji as an example. Shinji demonstrated the aspect of politeness through the multiple times he brought part of his catch of the day to the lighthouse keepers. Since Mishima is the one who created this character, Shinji, he showed his personal views through Shinji's actions. Politeness was one of the several aspects that Mishima supported revolving around the Bushido code. Another example of the Bushido code that is shown by Shinji's actions is courage. Shinji was courageous enough to swim out in the rough waves to tie a lifeline to the buoy. Once again, this portrays Mishima's view on the Bushido code. Because Mishima wrote about courageous actions, this showed that courage is a major part for one to be considered Bushido. Overall, part of Mishima's view on Japanese traditionalism revolved around the Bushido code. The protagonist, Shinji, in The Sound of Waves can be contrasted to the protagonist, the narrator, in Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress. Shinji found a girl, Hatsue, which he loved, and pursued to go after her even when it was forbidden by her father. On the other hand, the narrator loved the Little Seamstress, but didn't go after her because his best friend, Luo, already had a growing relationship with her. Japanese Animation and Identity Essay Japanese Animation and Identity In Orientalism, Edward Said claims that, "as much as the West itself, the Orient is an idea that has a history and a tradition of thought, imagery, and vocabulary that have given it reality and presence in and for the West" (5). The complex network of political, economical, academic, cultural, or geographical realities of the Orient called "Orientalism" is a way of coming to terms with the Orient, or to be less geographically specific, the Other. Although Said defines Orientalism to be specifically Franco–British experience in the Arab world, his basic arguments can be applied to the process of Othering in a more general sense. In other words, not only construction but deconstruction of the dubious entity "Orient" require the West (the Orient's agent) to speak for the Orient. Another problem is what Said calls "a triumph of Orientalism" (323) today, the major source of which is no longer Britain or France, but the United States, the democratically totalizing economy power. It means cultural domination on the one hand ("Orientals" educated in the United States repeat the Orientalist cliché), and economic absorption of poor nations on the other (consumerism in the Orient). A simple example Said takes up is "the paradox of an Arab regarding himself as an 'Arab' of the sort put out by Hollywood" (325). The Orient, in short, playacts its image as imagined by the West. This is far more problematic than the former form of Orientalism because the subject position of an "Oriental" is now realized only as the subject that (re–)presents itself as the Other before the Western eyes, as imagined by the West: and this Western gaze is what the Oriental subject identifies her/himself. Japanese Culture Shock Stereotypes Essay Culture shock stereotypes I feel that coming to Japan helped break a lot of assumptions about Japanese culture and also confirm knowledge I knew only from textbooks. The trip also made me experience some culture shock but if anything it made the trip more interesting. I appreciated the irony that was ever present. There were many customs both old and new I appreciated on the trip and helped open my eyes to new experiences, observations, and interactions with people I normally would never have a chance to meet. The Japanese people truly took elements of western culture and made it their own. One of my most memorable experiences was on the second night of Japan when we went to a baseball game and the customs there are crazy Both teams were really into the game even when losing they'd chant wave their flags and dance or clap their hands. They blew up balloons we thought until they burst but it was actually to let them go to make noise to cheer their team on. They dance and click sticks together in time to rally their teams fighting spirit. It was Tiger's vs Marines and the Tigers were The better team both cheering and playing wise. However, I like rooting for the marine because they were the underdogs. What if Army bombers could take off an aircraft carrier? Low tried his idea on Admiral King. King thought the idea had potential so he sent it on to Captain Donald Duncan to turn his plan into fact. This he did, and the Tokyo Raid became fact instead of fiction. The first step in the plan was finding a leader. General Arnold requested Lieutenant Colonel James Dolittle as the man to select the plane and the men for the mission. Dolittle accepted the challenge without hesitation. Arnold let him know in no uncertain terms that he was to be a planner not a pilot. As Doolittle went to work on the project, he saw a lot of problems. First of all, carrier landings were impossible for twin engine bombers. Next, the total air trip was eleven hundred miles. The closest landing area would be in Russia, but Joseph Stalin would not let them land there because he didn't want to be invaded by Japan since he already had his hands full with the Germans. Fortunately, China said it was all right to land there but they said it reluctantly. With these considerations and others, Doolittle determined that the chances of the mission succeeding was fifty–fifty. Despite the odds, the decision was made to begin the project. As the first step, despite Arnold, Doolittle wrote himself into the plan as a pathfinder. Doolittle's job during the attack would be to light up Tokyo with incendiary ...
