The document discusses three different film genres: horror, social realist, and comedy. For horror films, it notes the common settings, characters, and props like weapons and blood. Social realist films realistically portray everyday society and use typical costumes and locations. Music helps set the era. Comedy films have stereotypical characters and the costumes and locations vary depending on the characters and plot.
2. Horror In the genre of horror films, there are many different things included into the trailers in order to let people know that they think this should be the horror film that they want to go and spend money on seeing. Horror films are based on everyday people’s nightmares, and are very usually in a place that it is out of the way like an abandoned cottage, a rural house, etc. This is so that the victims are isolated. There are many different characters such as; vulnerable female, hero, police or security, victims and the killer. All these these characters are what are expected in a horror film, and without these characters the film wouldn’t be part of the mainstream horror films. There is a very small difference between a thriller and horror and sometimes these genre’s are confused. Props that are usually expected in a horror film is some sort of weapon (knife, gun, etc.), old fashioned TV’s that fuzz as they have no signal and this is normally used in order to create suspense into a scene, telephone is a popular choice as they often have the chance to get help and when they ring the authorities think that they are crazy, over-reacting, etc. Blood is a very important prop used as it connotes death and shows that the killer has been there and indicates that the person finding this may be in danger also. In a horror film the costume of the killer is usually black if they are even seen, if not then often you will only be shown the silhouette which is used very effectively as it creates suspense. Depending on the location depends on the clothes of the victims, vulnerable female and police. The sound is used very well in horror films and if there was no sound there would not be any suspense and the audience would not know if this person is the killer or the hero as the music generally indicates what this character is like, personality and behavior. The music for when a killer is on scene is eerie , creepy and often sends shivers down the spine as it can show that the killer is going to hurt anyone that he has to in order to get what he wants. Heightened sound effects are used for the emphasis of screams, phone calls, footsteps, etc.
3. Social Realist Social realist is a film that is based around the society that we live in and is very realistic to us that is why they are becoming very popular. With films like This is England becoming very well known. In a social realist film, This is England, they have the protagonist which is the school boy who is being bullied and he is helped out by a group of skinheads, and they help him overcome his fears. They then met the antagonistic character who then begins to try get him to become part of the BNP. They dress like typical skinheads, with doc martins, turn up jeans, braces, harrington jacket and chequed shirts and the females in the film dress similar with short hair, shirts sometime chequed, doc martins, jeans/skirt and a harrington jacket or a cardigan. These films are usually shot in towns and around council estates. They are shot in houses and around the streets which is making the film a lot more realistic as they use estates from all over the country and then people can relate to these films as this may already happen. Props that are associated with social realist films are alcohol, cigarettes, drugs and weapons. All these are used as they are though to be in some people’s everyday life and therefore making this film very realistic. The sounds that are used in social realist films are all to do with the time that the film is meant to be set in, as in This is England they use the music that you would hear in the 1970’s and therefore this will make the film realistic as if the music from now was played in the film it would be weird, and the audience would get confused as to when this film is actually set. So again the music is very important to the film as to indicate what era the film is meant to be in.
4. Comedy Comedy films they have got the stereotypical characters of the funny one, the serious one and all the ones in-between . The locations that are used are sometimes set in the place that they are made to live in, or they travel away for a special occasion, wedding, etc. In the props of a comedy film they can use anything as long as they have a reason for it, whether it be a spoof film or a general comedy. The costumes that are used all depend on the character, for the character that is portrayed as the funny one is generally in funny clothing maybe not worn by the everyday person and so therefore they look funny, and the serious character is usually well dressed as he/she has a good job and they have a reputation to upkeep which means that they will not just wear any clothes. The sounds that are used will all depend on the type of film, and they usually use music from the charts at this time on films like the hangover,
