Genre analysis-Comedy
Comedy is a genre of film that’s main purpose is to create humor and laughter to
the viewer by doing things that would be of the normal that makes people laugh.
For example a comedy film usually has a shot of some one falling over in a very
silly way or been hit in the face by an object and when they do this they over
exaggerate it to what it would be in real life to create a humorous effect.
Comedy films have been out since the evolution of film and was first ever played
in movie houses and theaters all around the world. Some of the first every silent
movies where comedies and this shows that the genre comedy is one of the first
genres to appear on screen so it is one of the oldest genres.
Most comedies have a happy ending and are based on one star; these stars
usually come from the world of stand up comedy and the transfer over to the
world of film to increase their popularity.
However some comedies do not have a happy ending and these are know as
black comedies and these contain taboo subject such as death, sexual scenes and
violence, for example the film Keeping Mom is a British black comedy staring
Rowan Atkinson, in this film it is about a woman who has a very large trunk on a
train and it begins to leak blood and the police are called, when they arrive the
woman tells them that there is two dismembered bodies inside the trunk, in the
trunk is her late cheating husband and his mistress, however they try to get her
convicted of manslaughter on the rights on insanity.
These kind of black comedy’s began to come out in the 1960;s, for example the
film Dr Strangelove(1964) was a film based on the cold war and contains scenes
of the nuclear scare between the USA and the Soviet Union, another film called
The Graduate is a film that is based on a man that is seduced by an older woman
and the begins to fall in love with her daughter and this contains scene’s of a
sexual nature that you would have found impossible to produce a few year
previous to its release.
The genre comedy is a genre that can be made into several sub/hybrid genres
here are three examples of a comedy sub genre,
Example one- Action Comedy is based on action with a twist like funny one liners
and stunts gone wrong, it was first introduced in the 80’s and it was a big hit in
north America with such actor’s such as Eddie Murphy taking more acting film
opportunity as he was based more with comedy’s, this shows how the blend
between comedy and other genres can be mixed to make a successful film, the
actor Eddie Murphy stared in action comedy’s such as Beverly Hills Cop.
Example two-Comedy horror is a genre that first began to make a big hit in the
80’s and 90’s with films such as Dead Alive and Evil Dead being big hits that
generated lots of money and viewings, these films where based of a horror and
contained lots of slapsticks, slapsticks are over exaggerated and boisterous
actions such as a pie in the face or violence that exceed the boundary’s of
common sense.

These hybrid comedy’s started to appear in films much more from the 1990’s
and have appeared ever since, one of the biggest hybrid comedy’s would be
romantic comedy’s and that is such films as Sleepless In Seattle and Notting Hill
and these kind of films as you can imagine has a story line of romance and this is
mixed in with comedy to create a funny and warm feeling towards the film.
