When words are used in speech and writing
their most obvious purpose is to point at
something – an idea or property. This is the
word’s meaning. Words stimulate in the
reader different meanings and associations
depending on how they are used alone, or in
combination with others. They create mental
pictures and allow the readers to participate
on a variety of experiences.
Denotation – The direct explicit meaning as
defined in the dictionary. – The denotative
meaning – the objective meeting that does
not go beyond the requirements of exact
definition.
Example:
• A dog is a four-legged animal coated by fur.
• A home is where someone lives.
Cannotation – The meaning of a word arouses
particular emotional attitudes from the
header.
- It suggest meanings beyond its standard
scientific or dictionary definition.
- The special emotional feelings vary according
to the individual.
Example:
• When a man is called a dog, it could mean
that he is rough.
• And once again, the autumn leaves were
falling.
Description – a technique that tells about
people, things or action through use of
adjectives.
- This help the reader to picture the
event, scene or character.
Example:
• Thick, overgrown brushes and climbing plants
now cover what was once a splendid castle
whose magnificent structure use to tower
over everything else.
Onomatopoeia – is a technique that uses words
to initiate sounds. Writers use onomatopoeia
to give a double emphasis to their work.
- A reader gets the meaning from the word and
receives additional meaning from the sound
of that word.
- Ideas are also better remembered through
this technique.
Example:
• Bang, growl, screech, ring, swish, rumble, pop,
Wham, ka-blam.
