Wildlife tourism is an element of many
nations travel industry centered around
with local animal observation and
interaction with local animal and plant
life in their natural habitats. While it can
include eco- and animal –friendly
tourism, safari hunting and similar high-
intervention activities also fall under the
umbrella of wildlife tourism. Wildlife
tourism is an important part of the
tourism industries in many countries
including many African and south
American countries , Australia, India,
Canada, Sri Lanka among many. Many
elements are closely aligned to eco-
tourism and sustainable tourism.
4. Positive impacts of wildlife tourism
• Habitat restoration by eco-lodges and other tourism
operation.
• Conservation-breeding–breeding of rare and endangered
species as a major part of their activities, and release the
progeny when possible into suitable habitat.
• Financial donations –money from visitor donations to assist
in-suit conservation of wild life.
• Quality interpretation – gives visitor a more informed base on
which to subsequently modify their behavior.
• Research and monitoring-support of monitoring of wildlife
numbers or general research relevant to conservation.
• Anti-poaching- Bringing tourist regularly into some areas may
make it more difficult for poachers of large animals or those
who collect smaller species for the black market.
5. Negative impacts of wildlife tourism
• Destruction of local resources to make room for
eco-tourism.
• Exploitation of local residents such as using them
for cheap labor.
• Damaging the environment and destroying nature
to make room for man made establishments.
• Using wildlife as tourist attractions and primarily to
generate money for the economy. Not preserve
them.
• Disturbing feeding patterns .
• Disturbing of parent-offspring bands.
6. Suggestions1. There should be more awareness about the eco-tourism destination in
Kerala by the tourism department through broaches, pamphlets, media
adverstiment etc.
2. More website should be commenced in order to give more information
about the tourism destination.
3. More activities have to be introduced and performed by the government
to promote eco-tourism.
4. The transportation facilities to the eco-tourism destination should be
increased.
5. Shopping facilities of the eco-tourism destination must be increased.
6. Rock climbing, trucking, bungee jumping has to be popularized at
Thenmala.
7. Professionalism in hospitality management should be enforced.
8. New ways and means must be introduced to promote health tourism.
