Religious tourism, also commonly referred to as faith tourism, is a type
of tourism, where people travel to a place which has moral and spiritual relevance.

3. • Importance of Tourism to the State, Punjab additionally spelt 'Punjab' (place
that is known for five streams) is a state in the northwest of the Republic of

attraction among Indians as well as foreign travellers from long times.
• The city of Amritsar also encloses Akal Takht, Sikh Parliament, Durgiyana
Temple and a number of other eye-catching tourist attractions which every
enthusiastic traveller would love to explore along with visiting Golden Temple.
• Another important attractions are Jallianwala Bagh, Maharaja Ranjit Singh
Panorma, Wagah Border, Mandir Mata lal, Rambagh Gareden, Jujubi tree,
ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness) Amritsar Sri Sri
Radha Gokulananda Temple, Harike Wetland and Bird Sanctuary, Khair ud
Din Masjid, Gurudwara Bir Baba Budha Sahib, Sri Ram Tirath Temple, Tarn
Taran Sahib etc.
• So as mention above Amritsar have many eye catching and heart touching
religious, historical, cultural and monumental attraction that are attracting
number of tourist from different corners of the world with different religions

Governments/Union Territory Administrations for tourism projects
2. PHTPB (Punjab Heritage and Tourism Promotion Board) is launching a
scheme to promote high-end Bed & Breakfast accommodation, a scheme to
promote high end eating experience in these road side eateries by name
PURE Project Up gradation Road Side Eateries. They intend to improve
existing level of services. Various schemes has been introduced for
development of tourism in Punjab like Hunar Se Rozgar
3. In the last two years, the Ministry of Tourism has undertaken several
initiatives to provide a further boost to the sector such as launch of new
schemes like Swadesh Darshan and PRASAD (Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and
Spirituality Augmentation Drive), revamping of existing schemes such as
Hunar se Rozgar tak, extending e-Tourist Visas to more countries, developing
a Mobile Application for Tourists, introducing an Incredible India Tourist
Helpline, and undertaking various skill development initiatives such as setting
up of Indian Culinary Institute, approval of new Institutes of Hotel
Management etc.

in 12 languages on February 8, 2016. It can be accessed on

8. • According to WTTC‟s India Benchmarking Report 2015, every $1 million
in travel and tourism spending in India generates $1.3 million in GDP
• EMPLOYMENT GENERATION:-As regards the employment generated
by the Tourism industry including the Hotels and Restaurants, the available
information indicates that there were 7727 Hotels and Restaurants in the
state in 2000, employing over 15,600 persons in the private owned
enterprises and regular establishments in the state. The following data will
shows the total no. of arrival in Punjab that roughly shows with increasing
number of arrival we need more persons to be employed in same industry

11. So we can conclude by saying pilgrimage tourism has wide potentials, its
contribution to GDP is also significant which can lead to development of a
nation. Though tourism is basically a service industry, its growth and
promotion are interdependent both directly and indirectly on many other
sectors of the economy like Infrastructure, Transport Sector, Tele
Communications, Hotels and Restaurants, Travel Agents and Tour Operators,
Hotel Management and Food Craft Institutions, Handicrafts and Traditional
Gifts items manufactures , Shopping Arcades and Exhibitions. [Punjab is
known as the land of great gurus, has a great heritage of famous religious
shrines, palaces, ancient monuments and historical embodiments, wetlands and
much more to attract all category of tourist.
