Federal Indian Policies
Beginning in 1789 with George Washington, the Indians living next to the American people forced
federal Indian policies to be created, which ranged from coexistence to removal. These policies
under the seven different presidents coincided in ways regarding expansion and removal, but also
changed in ways regarding American interaction, civilization, and removal tactics of the Indians.
Despite the consistent similarities in federal Indian policies during the years between the
Washington and Jackson Administrations, the time frame ultimately led to major evolvement and
transformations in viewpoints, treatments, and actions.
George Washington and John Adams' administrations had similar intentions, but policies were
changing when Thomas Jefferson ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In a sudden manner, the voluntary movements of Natives to lands west of the Mississippi became
politically and militarily enforced movement to a specific territory, what is now present–day
Oklahoma. James Monroe, a consistent president in assisting the tribes, was willing to help the
Natives establish their own land to civilize (James Monroe and the Indians). John Quincy Adams
encouraged the movement of Indians to west of the Mississippi, but also while purchasing their
previous land, rather than annexing it(Presidency of John Quincy Adams). These methods kept
peace and negotiation between the Indians and the Americans. As soon as Jackson was elected
president, he called for military force to remove the Indians from their land through the Indian
Removal Act. This sudden modification was because of Jackson's belief that Indians should not live
east of the Mississippi river and strongly urged the use of military action prior to his election in
1829. Due to Jackson's new law, Indian Nations were forced to move into Oklahoma on the Trail of
Tears, which resulted in many deaths (Indian Removal Act). The removal of Indians continued on
from Monroe's administration, however, this was conclusively brought on by the desire of westward
expansion, which began with Washington's

Indian American Culture
Culture has a significant role to play on one's life and defines the character of a person, so being
Indian–American, my world is split between two cultures, forcing me to play a dual role. For
instance, I spend half–day at school living as an American, and at home experience a true Indian
lifestyle. As an Indian in America, I face the world with self–identification issues, are open to a great
selection of opportunities, and have an impact on society from the moment I was born.
I grew up in a society where media has taken over the way children see the world. Wherever they
look, they see an ideal American lifestyle which their family differs from. In the United States, Miss
America is considered to be the beauty image of the nation. Our Indian community was recognized
when Nina Davuluri was crowned Miss America in the year 2014. In an interview with Fox News,
Davuluri stated, "Growing up as a girl, I imagined Miss America to always be the girl next door,"
with the intent to emphasize the cultural preferences seen within the United States and its impact on
the younger generation.
The differences in skin, eye, and hair color influences insecurities in an average Indian American.
Furthermore, Nina Davuluri conveys a negative connotation to her perspective as a young girl to
emphasize the idea that young Americans are brainwashed in a way to believe blond hair, white
skin, and blue eyes are ideal for beauty and social acceptance. I have seen many peers at school that

Indian Writing in English
Chapter 1 Introduction Indian writing in English has a comparatively short but highly stimulating
history. In 1793, Sake Dean Mahomed wrote conceivably the first book by an Indian in English,
called The 'Travels of Dean Mahomed'. However, most early Indian writing in English was non–
fictional work, such as biographies and political essays. This began to change in the late 1800s,
when famous Indian authors who wrote mostly in their mother tongue, began to try their hand at
writing in English. In the early 1900s, Rabindranath Tagore began translating his works from
Bengali to English. During the start of 1917 Dhan Gopal Mukerji wrote a number of stories mostly
for children with Indian setup. He was honored with the Newbery medal in 1928 for Gay Neck, the
Story of a Pigeon. Soon after, a whole new generation of Indian authors, who wrote almost
exclusively in English appeared. Starting in 1935 with R.K. Narayan's most famous collection titled
Swami and Friends and Mulk Raj Anand's Untouchable followed by Raja Rao's book Kanthapura in
1938.The thing that distinguished Narayan's, Anand's and Rao's works from the Indian authors
before them was the use of Indianess in their work which can be very well seen in terms of the
words and style they used. They also brought forward the story of the Indian common man. This
gave birth to new ranks of Indians reading English literature. Their works were the precursors to the

The ' Plains Indian '
The term "Plains Indian" refers to a group of indigenous people who lived on the interior plains of
both Midwest America and the southern Canada. Their culture was traditionally nomadic as they
survived by hunting and gathering, and often followed the migration of the American Bison. The
Bison provided them with their main resource as they used its hide, bones, fat, and fur to make
clothing, housing, and tools. Teepees were their traditional form of housing because they were easily
constructed and then dismantled to fit the Plains Indian's transient lifestyle (Roth, 1923). Several
other unique aspects of their lifestyle have become a part of the stereotypical American Indian
depicted in film and literature such as their reliance on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The men mainly wore leggings and short pants made out of animal skin and during the winter
seasons they wore thick hide robes. It was difficult to obtain enough hide to clothe an entire village
so some members had very little clothing at all and almost no one had more than one set of clothing
(Carlson, 1998). This scarcity caused Plains Indians to reduce the use of their clothing by going
naked in the warmer seasons in hopes of prolonging its use (Kaye, 1987). Most women wore dresses
made out of lighter weight deerskin, sometimes with thin pants made out of deerskin or buffalo hide.
Women spun and wove fibers made from flax and other wheat to make the inside of theses hides
softer (Carlson, 1998). The act of adorning personal items with dyed porcupine quills is an ancient
Native American art form predominantly used by the Plains Indian tribes before the introduction of
glass beads. This method of decoration has long been a part of Plains Indian culture as
archaeologists have discovered quill working tools dating back to the 6th century (Neuman, 1960).
Quill work is entirely unique to the Subarctic, Plains, and Northeastern Woodlands of North
America (Roth, 1923).These areas encapsulate the porcupine's natural habitat which reveals the
ability of Plains Indians to utilize the resources around them for means of production beyond
survival. This adaptation is

Indian Removal
Indian Removal At the start of the Revolution in 1776 many of the patriots view towards the Indians
was that of Thomas Jefferson's, the paternalistic view. That the Indians were "noble savages,
"uncivilized in their present state but if they would adapt to ways of the white society they could be
redeemed. While others felt that they should be treated as conquered people because some of the
tribes helped the British in the War, one of which was the Mohawks. That was one the main reason
why most of the tribes choose to stay out of the war. At this point in time the patriots felt that they
were merely trying to provide for their families and start a new life in the new world. But to the
Indians they felt that the patriots were trying to push them off their lands, threatening their families
and their way of life. And over time these views towards each other change with each push
westward on the part of the patriots and each conflict of resistance on the part of the Indians. As the
new nation grew the need for more land became evident, as a way of trying to bring resolve the
government signed treaties with the tribes. The treaties promised them protection of the lands they
had held if they ceded certain lands. But when it came right down to it treaty after treaty was
broken, which lead to more and more distrust by the Indians. As time passed the views of Indians
changed, in the early 1800's whites viewed Indians as "savages" that should be removed from the

Indian Camp Analysis
Kian Cato September 17, 2017
From fishing trip to the birth of a baby to an unexplained suicide, Nick has had a very interesting
day. Indian Camp is centered around the main character Nick who is a young boy and his father is a
doctor. From the short story "Indian Camp", by Ernest Hemingway, Nick experiences his first time
seeing several things happening as graphic as child birth with C–section and suicide, things he had
never seen before and had no idea that he was about to experience that in his life. From the reading,
the young Indian seems reluctant to look at the episode head on however he was a good help to his
dad. I also observed that Nick is not a tough person, that he is sensitive, passionate and caring. "Oh,
daddy can't you give her something to make her stop screaming?" I think that Nick might have been
too young to be experiencing such a grownup episode as childbirth and under the circumstance as a
C–section and mortality. I also think that his father may have pushed this experience on him a little
too soon. As it turns out Nick still too young to really process the idea of mortality and Nick's father
had to explain to him a whole lot more than he expected to do. "He was looking away so as not to
see what his father was doing." "Nick did not watch. His curiosity had been gone for a long time."
In the "Indian Camp" there was a young boy named Nick who goes on an adventure with

The fork of the lodge represents the eagle's nest. The eagle plays a large part in the Sun Dance for it
is one of the Plains Indians' most sacred animal. The eagle flies high, being the closest creature to
the Sun. Therefore it is the link between man and spirit, being the messenger that delivers prayers to
the Wakan–Tanka (god). (Atwood) In addition to being a messenger, the eagle also represents many
human traits. We can see what values and traits these cultures saw as being important in a person by
those traits imposed upon such a sacred animal. The eagle is seen as courageous, swift, and strong.
He has great foresight and knows everything. "In an eagle there is all the wisdom of the
world." (Atwood) During the Sun Dance the eagle is the facilitator of communication between
man and spirit. The Crow may be accompanied by a dancing eagle in his visions, the eagle
"instructing him about the medicine acquired through the vision." (Atwood) The eagle's
feathers can cure illnesses. During the Sun Dance a medicine man may use his eagle feather for
healing, first touching the feather to the sun–pole then to the patient, transferring the energy from
the pole to the ill. It is the buffalo, however, that makes up the main theme of the Sun Dance. In
various stories it was the buffalo that began the ritual. The Shoshone believe that the buffalo taught
someone the proper way to carry out the dance and the benefits in doing it. Buffalo songs, dances,

Wisconsin until 1816.
1790s – The fur trade thrived in the final years of the 1700s. The trade remained dominated by
British merchants and traders, but involved many French Canadians, the Métis, and a few
Americans. Wisconsin's Indian Nations remained full participants in the trade but their increasing
reliance on trade goods continued to undermine their traditional culture and social structure.

Indian History
Indian History – Important events
History of India . An overview : The people of India have had a continuous civilization since 2500
B.C., when the inhabitants of the Indus River valley developed an urban culture based on commerce
and sustained by agricultural trade. This civilization declined around 1500 B.C., probably due to
ecological changes.
During the second millennium B.C., pastoral, Aryan–speaking tribes migrated from the northwest
into the subcontinent. As they settled in the middle Ganges River valley, they adapted to antecedent
cultures.
The political map of ancient and medieval India was made up of myriad kingdoms with fluctuating
boundaries. In the 4th and 5th centuries A.D., northern India was unified under the Gupta Dynasty.

In 1979, Desai's Government crumbled. Charan Singh formed an interim government, which was
followed by Mrs. Gandhi's return to power in January 1980. On October 31, 1984, Mrs. Gandhi was
assassinated, and her son, Rajiv, was chosen by the Congress (I)––for "Indira"––Party to take her
place. His government was brought down in 1989 by allegations of corruption and was followed by
V.P. Singh and then Chandra Shekhar.
In the 1989 elections, although Rajiv Gandhi and Congress won more seats in the 1989 elections
than any other single party, he was unable to form a government with a clear majority. The Janata
Dal, a union of opposition parties, was able to form a government with the help of the Hindu–
nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on the right and the communists on the left. This loose
coalition collapsed in November 1990, and the government was controlled for a short period by a
breakaway Janata Dal group supported by Congress (I), with Chandra Shekhar as Prime Minister.
That alliance also collapsed, resulting in national elections in June 1991.
On May 27, 1991, while campaigning in Tamil Nadu on behalf of Congress (I), Rajiv Gandhi was
assassinated, apparently by Tamil extremists from Sri Lanka. In the elections, Congress (I) won 213
parliamentary seats and put together a coalition, returning to power under the leadership of P.V.
Narasimha Rao. This Congress–led government, which served a full 5–year term,

The Clause Of Indian Land
In Chapter 6, Wilkins discusses how the disclaimer clauses. These clauses keep states from
exercising authority on Indian land (180). They are an "important but often overlooked tool in the
arsenal available to tribes to assert their own sovereignty against state threats" (177). A specific
example of a disclaimer clause is Wisconsin's territorial disclaimer of 1836 which prohibited
territories or states from having any authority on Indian land (180). In Native American Church v.
Navajo Tribal Council (1959) it was declared that Indian tribes actually have a higher status than
states (179). This was a major victory for Indians in their fight for sovereignty. United States v.
Rickert (1903) was also a win for sovereignty in that the Court prohibited South Dakota from taxing
Indian land (185).After the verdict in Seminole Tribe v. Florida (1996), the balance of power
between state and federal government leaned towards the states. Before this, negotiations with tribes
had been conducted at the federal level and not with states (187). This was against the idea of
sovereignty because now the states had more power over the tribes and could abuse that power for
personal gain.
In United States v. McBratney (1881), McBratney tried to argue that the federal government had no
authority over a crime that occurred on Indian Territory, despite the fact that both parties were white.
The Court ruled that since Colorado had not expressly renounced jurisdiction over the Ute Indian

On 29th September 2016, the Indian army carried out surgical strikes against a number of positions
along the Line of Control (LOC) in Kashmir in response to a militant attack in Uri eleven days
earlier. The Indian military response is unprecedented, as India has historically responded to
Pakistan's support for militancy in the subcontinent through diplomatic channels. Even after the
Mumbai attacks, which claimed the lives of 166 civilians, Indian officials published a 69 page
dossier detailing the involvement of Pakistani state–agencies, and the government responded by
pressurizing Pakistan on the international front, rather than attempting military action (Rabasa 2009,

Wendt identifies three key elements of this international social structure, namely shared knowledge,
material resources, and "practices".
Wendt describes shared knowledge as shared expectation or knowledge which "...constitute the
actors in a situation and the nature of their relationships..."(Wendt 1995, 73), while the term
'practices' characterizes the dynamic nature of social structures by referring to period of time where
certain configurations of relationships between states are tended towards as determined by some
underlying idea, conflict or other organizing principle, as with the Cold war. "Material" refers to the
material resources, such as economic or military capabilities, population size, or other tangible
resources available to an actor. Putting the three together "...constructivist theorizing tries to show
how the social structure of a system makes actions possible by constituting actors with certain
identities and interests, and material capabilities with certain meanings..."(Wendt 1995, 73) and
emphasizes on how "...agency and interaction produce and reproduce structures of shared
knowledge over time" (Wendt 1995, 76). Thus, given a social structure for a given system, where
each actor corresponds to sets of identities and narratives that inform both the actor's intentions and

What caused Ranbir concern was the lack of consensus among the various stakeholder groups in the
Indian
Railways about the idea of 'tracking' the rolling stock
(freight railcars, passenger coaches, locomotives). The need to automate such tracking – especially
for freight railcars6 – had been felt for almost two decades. Initially, the available technology was
too expensive, and experimental in nature; however, lately, technologies had stabilized, and costs
had come down. Various options had become available to automate the tracking, ranging from the
use of RFID tags to the use of Global Positioning Systems (GPS)–based technology. Other available
alternatives were the use of optical tracking systems using OCR, or the use of hand–held devices to
manually record wagon identification data.
Ranbir scrutinized the thick file of papers in front of him.
It described the pilot project for automatic wagon tracking, which had recently commenced. The
pilot project envisaged the use of RFID technology, already proven in North
American railroads and other Railways, to tag 500 coal hopper wagons (Figure 1). Three trackside
tag readers would be placed along one of the routes used for

The Treatment Of Indians By The French And Indians Essay
They Made Us Many Promises The treatment of Indians by the French in Canada and English in
Massachusetts was dramatic. The French had proceeded there way to North America and arrived in
the 1500's and was interested in establishing trading posts. There were settlements on St. Lawrence
River that came to the point as a serving (as a base from which to invade and conquer the kingdom
of Saguenay). The trade between the French and Indians was a development from these enterprises
in trading military forts. There were many items that were traded such as beaver pelts, furs, textile,
and metal that had attractions for both trading partners. The indigenous they interact with Huron in

to convert them to Catholicism. The Hurons initially tolerate these conversions efforts, but grow to
resent them. The hurons are exposed to disease that kills many of them. The French don't provide
adequate protection against the Iroquois. Among the disease victims were chefs, clan leaders, wise
elders, and skilled craftspeople." The Iroquois attack the Hurons and destroy their capital. The
English desire for land created an antagonistic relationship with Wampanoag. The Puritans and the
religious motivations for Plymouth are important. The interaction with Wampanoag the English

IIndian nationalism
Indian nationalism refers to the many underlying forces that molded the Indian independence
movement, and strongly continue to influence the politics of India, as well as being the heart of
many contrasting ideologies that have caused ethnic and religious conflict in Indian society. Indian
nationalism often imbibes the consciousness of Indians that prior to 1947, India embodied the
broader Indian subcontinent and influenced a part of Asia, known as Greater India.

More than just "Indian"
Indian nationalism is as much a diverse blend of nationalistic sentiments as its people are ethnically
and religiously diverse. Thus the most influential undercurrents are more than just Indian in nature.
The most controversial and emotionally–charged fiber in the fabric of Indian nationalism is religion.
Religion forms a major, and in many cases, the central element of Indian life. Ethnic communities
are diverse in terms of linguistics, social traditions and history across India.
Hindu Rashtra
An important influence upon Hindu consciousness arises from the time of Islamic empires in India,
during which many Hindu temples were destroyed and Hindus forcibly converted to Islam, and
millions of Hindus killed by Muslim invaders. Entering the 20th century, Hindus formed over 75%
of the population and thus unsurprisingly the backbone and platform of the nationalist movement.
Modern Hindu thinking desired to unite Hindu society across the boundaries of caste, lingustic
groups and ethnicity. In 1925, K.B. Hedgewar founded the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh in
Nagpur, Maharashtra, which grew into the largest civil organization in the country, and more potent,
mainstream base of Hindu nationalism.
Vinayak Damodar Savarkar coined the term Hindutva for his ideology that described India as a
Hindu Rashtra, a Hindu nation. This ideology has become the

The Indian Experience Of India
Indian Experience
India is the second largest populous country in the world with a diverse population and culture. It is
one of the oldest civilizations dating back 4,500 years. The population is made up of numerous
different ethnicities and religions. The culture was heavily influenced by different civilizations that
once occupied India; food is no exception. Indian cuisine is known for its diverse and wide ranging
assortment of dishes as well as its extensive variety of herbs and especially spices (Live Science,

Our server, the same man who seated us, brought us water and directed us toward the buffet. The
first thing I noticed when approaching the buffet was the smell. There were so many different spices
and food smells lingering in the air it was unbelievably appetizing. The buffet was rather extensive,
with about 20 different dish options to choose from including naan and dessert. I did not hesitate. I
took a little bit of everything until my plate was full. I then proceeded to cover the plate with several
pieces of garlic naan. The food was simply delicious. It ranged from every level of spiciness without
being so spicy that it killed the taste. My favorite dishes were a spiced zucchini dish and the Aloo
Mater which is a potato and green pea dish with a perfect blend of Indian spices. Also, the naan was
extraordinary; soft and crispy with slivered green onion and pureed garlic spread on top. We also
ordered chai which was delicious and had the right amount of warmth and caffeine for the afternoon.
It complimented the Kheer (an Indian style rice pudding) perfectly. The food was an overall

Indian American Culture
The Asian Indian American (also known as Indo–Indians) community is a vast one that contribute to
more several facets of life in the United States. Some of these encompass the economic, political,
and social historical contributions of Indo–Indians to American society. Other aspects will include
the type of education levels, education system, and the role of education, as well as the constructs of
family and religion within the family and the effects of Asian Indian Americans on pop culture.
When comparing the Asian Indian American population, some can be seen as higher middle–class;
families that have economic stability, higher education, highly literate in English, as well as high
technical skills. "Indian immigrants tend to arrive in the United States with higher levels of
education and as native English speakers" (Schachter, 2014, pp. 5–6, para. 2). Some of the
professions they will include themselves are medical, technical, and legal. "The growth of Silicon
Valley's information technology industry furthered the increase of Asian Indian professionals in
Northern California" (Schaefer, 2015, p. 368, para. 7). However, there are some that are considered
lower middle–class; lower economic stability, median education level and minimal control of the

Plains Indians Demise
The Demise of the Plains Indians In chapters 16 and 17 we learned many things; a big portion was
about the natives. Focusing on their treatments that consequently lead to their demise. As the white

adjustments made by the Plains Indians, yet they faced hardships such as, lack of supplies, adequate

during the time that white settlers started changing their ways. The whites brought a new way of life
that the Indians had not yet seen. Some were positive and others, not so much. The whites had soon

Chippewa Indian Culture
The clothing of the Chippewa Indians was oftentimes made of animal skin. The tendons were taken
from the animals and used as thread for the clothing that the Chippewa wore. The men wore a long
piece of animal skin or cloth between their legs and belted it at the hips. The flaps then covered the
front and behind of the men. Leggings were worn by both women and men and sometimes they
were covered with fancy fringe. The leggings were created from animal skin and therefore were
quite insulating during the cold winters. Women sometimes wore long skirts over the top of their
leggings. Women wore a thin blouse, basically like a poncho, that included a cut out at the neck for
the head to go through. Fancy aprons were worn on special occasions. The Chippewa men wore
headdresses made of stiff porcupine hair. These headdresses closely relate the Chippewa to the
Mohawk and Mohicans. Women kept their hair long in length and braided it, with pieces of cloth
and shells intermingled in them. Jewelry was something very important in the Chippewa culture.
They wore copper bracelets and beaded necklaces. Also important in the Chippewa society were
tribal tattoos and face paint. These distinct markings were used in times of war to differentiate

Speech On Indian Food
Once considered the shining jewel in the British Empire's crown, India can today be easily deemed
as the huge, 60–carat diamond in the World's flavored cuisine ring . Indian food is all about variety
and is an example of ancient tradition. The cuisine of the country is characterized by elaborate
cooking techniques and the use of expensive ingredients.
Indian cuisine was introduced to a splendid assortment during the colonial period. The colonial
period introduced European cooking styles to India exhibiting British Influence on Indian Food. In
that period, flexibility and diversity was introduced to the cuisine of India. The history of Indian
food tells us that during the reign of the British Empire in India (the British Raj), the local cuisine
was considered by the Europeans closely to what Gods taught of ambrosia: a delightful, heavenly
and delicate dish. Many times, we ask how the Indian cuisine grew to be so popular, so diverse and
so delightful. In truth, the question is quite dim...from a population of one billion people, is it really

History of the Indian Rupee
The currency of India is the rupee. Rupee is derived from the Sanskrit rupyakam which means coin

follows: early private and semi–governmental banks, Government of India, King George V, King

Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States of America, aptly defined democracy as a

basic tenet that, in this– form of government, people are supreme. The ultimate power is in their

They help in the formation of public opinion as well. Thus, political parties see that there is nothing
against the spirit of democracy, freedom, equality and social justice. In the absence of political
parties, we cannot think of smooth and effective functioning of a democracy. Different political
parties may have different ideologies but they all aim at the good of the people and the country. The
party system in India has been a great factor in giving meaning and life to democracy. With the
passage of time, a new and healthy relationship has developed between the ruling party and the
opposition parties on the one hand and between the public and the political parties on the other. It is
because of the enlightened Indian voters and political parties in opposition that the government and
the party in power have been more responsive and accountable to the people and their
representatives. Obviously, democracy is not a one–sided game and it needs two or more players in
the form of ruling party, parties in opposition and the electorate.
Liberty, equality, justice and fraternity are the very cornerstones of democracy. They are not
available under dictatorship and utilitarian forms of government. Without freedom of speech,
expression of faith, profession, and association, etc. democracy is meaningless. Similarly, right to

Indian American Communication : Indian Americans
Indian–American Communication Indian–Americans are people who either originated themselves or
descend from an ancestor who was born in India. The dynamics in a home where parents are native
Indians and the children are first generation born Indian–Americans are quite different from other
hyphenated American cultures. The languages used within the homes as well as the rituals to show
levels of respect are critical things implemented within a family unit of this stature. The spoken and
unspoken rules of communication shape the first generation Indian–Americans and how they
interact with others in their generation. Indian–Americans ranging from ages 16–24 that are first
generation Americans undergo the stages of minority identity development. They are commonly
placed in environments which force them to question their own identity. As they communicate with
peers, they question themselves and their personal beliefs and customs. Occasionally, they view the
majority culture as better than their own and may develop negative feelings of their Indian
household upbringing. One may feel the need to internalize the values of the dominant culture of the
community and change to fit the status quo. This is especially difficult for Indian–Americans
because so many things that they are taught within the home are not normal for the majority culture

Spices can be defined as "strongly flavored" or "aromatic substances" that is commonly used as a

their dishes. However, most of these cuisines use spices in their basic way – which means that it is
usually one spice that stands out or gives the dish its unique taste even if it is being used with

The Origin Of The Ais Indians
Long before the Western countries discovered North America, the Native Americans lived and
thrived here. Historians believe these wandering peoples crossed over a land bridge that formed
when the earth froze over, officially named Beringia, to get to North America. These nomadic
Natives began spreading and forming different tribes around North America. One of the many tribes
was the Ais Indians of Florida. By themselves, the tribes reigned the New World, but contact with
the Westerns began their tragic demise. Although little is known about the origins of the Ais Indians,
historians do know that they settled around 1000 BC. The Ais Indians were located on the Atlantic
Coast of Florida, from present day Cape Canaveral to St. Lucie. This area would have covered four
counties: Brevard, Indian River, St. Lucie, and the northern part of Martin. The Ais Indians resided
in towns and villages along the Indian River in huts. Similar to any group of people, the Ais had a
leader called the Cacique. The Cacique was determined by whom the most respected matrilineal
family was in the tribe. Unlike the traditions of the West, the Cacique would rule through suggestion
instead of force. Regarding to housing, the huts they lived in were framed with wood or sticks, then
they were covered in palmetto leaves to form walls and a roof. As expected, the Cacique's hut was
larger and more furnished than the rest of the huts. Their diet mainly consisted of fish, oysters,

The Indian Reservation System
An Indian Reservation is a legal territory managed by a certain Native American tribe given to them,
with only partial sovereignty, by the United States government. Only 326 of the country's 567
recognized tribes were granted land, but even the land they were granted is not sufficient enough to
support a sustainable lifestyle. With no rights to their land, no sense of home, and a rapidly dying
culture, native americans have been dealt with in the worst ways possible after their own massacre
and consistently broken treaties. An analysis of the Indian reservation system in the US provides
deeper insight to the idea that the treatment of natives has left profound, long–lasting negative

candidates competed for each of the 543 territorial constituency seats. Elections are held at different
levels. The two major election levels are at national level, after which the national government is
established and at state level after which the state government is established. Elections are also held
for city, town and village councils. There are different political issues in Indian politics. Some are

In these elections members for the Lower House are elected. Head of a state is called Chief Minister,
who is member of the Lower House. Constitutionally the figurehead of the state is the Governor,
who is appointed by the President according to the advice of the national government. After the state
elections the governor calls for the suitable candidate to form the government. In general the
governor has more legislative rights at state level than the President has at national level. The
governor can call on early elections in the state, or fire the government if he thinks that the
government has failed or is unstable. In the federal relations between the state and central
government, the central government has more authority on state matters than the state government.
For example the central government has the right to redistribute the state borders without consulting
the state governments on this matter. If the political conditions in any state are not stable, the
national government can call on the President to declare President 's rule in that specific state. And

Federal Indian Policies

  • 1. Federal Indian Policies Beginning in 1789 with George Washington, the Indians living next to the American people forced federal Indian policies to be created, which ranged from coexistence to removal. These policies under the seven different presidents coincided in ways regarding expansion and removal, but also changed in ways regarding American interaction, civilization, and removal tactics of the Indians. Despite the consistent similarities in federal Indian policies during the years between the Washington and Jackson Administrations, the time frame ultimately led to major evolvement and transformations in viewpoints, treatments, and actions. George Washington and John Adams' administrations had similar intentions, but policies were changing when Thomas Jefferson ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In a sudden manner, the voluntary movements of Natives to lands west of the Mississippi became politically and militarily enforced movement to a specific territory, what is now present–day Oklahoma. James Monroe, a consistent president in assisting the tribes, was willing to help the Natives establish their own land to civilize (James Monroe and the Indians). John Quincy Adams encouraged the movement of Indians to west of the Mississippi, but also while purchasing their previous land, rather than annexing it(Presidency of John Quincy Adams). These methods kept peace and negotiation between the Indians and the Americans. As soon as Jackson was elected president, he called for military force to remove the Indians from their land through the Indian Removal Act. This sudden modification was because of Jackson's belief that Indians should not live east of the Mississippi river and strongly urged the use of military action prior to his election in 1829. Due to Jackson's new law, Indian Nations were forced to move into Oklahoma on the Trail of Tears, which resulted in many deaths (Indian Removal Act). The removal of Indians continued on from Monroe's administration, however, this was conclusively brought on by the desire of westward expansion, which began with Washington's ... • 3. Indian American Culture Culture has a significant role to play on one's life and defines the character of a person, so being Indian–American, my world is split between two cultures, forcing me to play a dual role. For instance, I spend half–day at school living as an American, and at home experience a true Indian lifestyle. As an Indian in America, I face the world with self–identification issues, are open to a great selection of opportunities, and have an impact on society from the moment I was born. I grew up in a society where media has taken over the way children see the world. Wherever they look, they see an ideal American lifestyle which their family differs from. In the United States, Miss America is considered to be the beauty image of the nation. Our Indian community was recognized when Nina Davuluri was crowned Miss America in the year 2014. In an interview with Fox News, Davuluri stated, "Growing up as a girl, I imagined Miss America to always be the girl next door," with the intent to emphasize the cultural preferences seen within the United States and its impact on the younger generation. The differences in skin, eye, and hair color influences insecurities in an average Indian American. Furthermore, Nina Davuluri conveys a negative connotation to her perspective as a young girl to emphasize the idea that young Americans are brainwashed in a way to believe blond hair, white skin, and blue eyes are ideal for beauty and social acceptance. • 5. Indian Writing in English Chapter 1 Introduction Indian writing in English has a comparatively short but highly stimulating history. In 1793, Sake Dean Mahomed wrote conceivably the first book by an Indian in English, called The 'Travels of Dean Mahomed'. However, most early Indian writing in English was non– fictional work, such as biographies and political essays. This began to change in the late 1800s, when famous Indian authors who wrote mostly in their mother tongue, began to try their hand at writing in English. In the early 1900s, Rabindranath Tagore began translating his works from Bengali to English. During the start of 1917 Dhan Gopal Mukerji wrote a number of stories mostly for children with Indian setup. He was honored with the Newbery medal in 1928 for Gay Neck, the Story of a Pigeon. Soon after, a whole new generation of Indian authors, who wrote almost exclusively in English appeared. Starting in 1935 with R.K. Narayan's most famous collection titled Swami and Friends and Mulk Raj Anand's Untouchable followed by Raja Rao's book Kanthapura in 1938.The thing that distinguished Narayan's, Anand's and Rao's works from the Indian authors before them was the use of Indianess in their work which can be very well seen in terms of the words and style they used. They also brought forward the story of the Indian common man. This gave birth to new ranks of Indians reading English literature. Their works were the precursors to the magnificent ... • 9. The ' Plains Indian ' The term "Plains Indian" refers to a group of indigenous people who lived on the interior plains of both Midwest America and the southern Canada. Their culture was traditionally nomadic as they survived by hunting and gathering, and often followed the migration of the American Bison. The Bison provided them with their main resource as they used its hide, bones, fat, and fur to make clothing, housing, and tools. Teepees were their traditional form of housing because they were easily constructed and then dismantled to fit the Plains Indian's transient lifestyle (Roth, 1923). Several other unique aspects of their lifestyle have become a part of the stereotypical American Indian depicted in film and literature such as their reliance on ... It was difficult to obtain enough hide to clothe an entire village so some members had very little clothing at all and almost no one had more than one set of clothing (Carlson, 1998). This scarcity caused Plains Indians to reduce the use of their clothing by going naked in the warmer seasons in hopes of prolonging its use (Kaye, 1987). Most women wore dresses made out of lighter weight deerskin, sometimes with thin pants made out of deerskin or buffalo hide. Women spun and wove fibers made from flax and other wheat to make the inside of theses hides softer (Carlson, 1998). The act of adorning personal items with dyed porcupine quills is an ancient Native American art form predominantly used by the Plains Indian tribes before the introduction of glass beads. This method of decoration has long been a part of Plains Indian culture as archaeologists have discovered quill working tools dating back to the 6th century (Neuman, 1960). Quill work is entirely unique to the Subarctic, Plains, and Northeastern Woodlands of North America (Roth, 1923).These areas encapsulate the porcupine's natural habitat which reveals the ability of Plains Indians to utilize the resources around them for means of production beyond survival. • 11. Indian Removal Indian Removal At the start of the Revolution in 1776 many of the patriots view towards the Indians was that of Thomas Jefferson's, the paternalistic view. That the Indians were "noble savages, "uncivilized in their present state but if they would adapt to ways of the white society they could be redeemed. While others felt that they should be treated as conquered people because some of the tribes helped the British in the War, one of which was the Mohawks. That was one the main reason why most of the tribes choose to stay out of the war. At this point in time the patriots felt that they were merely trying to provide for their families and start a new life in the new world. But to the Indians they felt that the patriots were trying to push them off their lands, threatening their families and their way of life. And over time these views towards each other change with each push westward on the part of the patriots and each conflict of resistance on the part of the Indians. As the new nation grew the need for more land became evident, as a way of trying to bring resolve the government signed treaties with the tribes. The treaties promised them protection of the lands they had held if they ceded certain lands. But when it came right down to it treaty after treaty was broken, which lead to more and more distrust by the Indians. As time passed the views of Indians changed, in the early 1800's whites viewed Indians as "savages" that should be removed from the valuable land that the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. Indian Camp Analysis Kian Cato September 17, 2017 From fishing trip to the birth of a baby to an unexplained suicide, Nick has had a very interesting day. Indian Camp is centered around the main character Nick who is a young boy and his father is a doctor. From the short story "Indian Camp", by Ernest Hemingway, Nick experiences his first time seeing several things happening as graphic as child birth with C–section and suicide, things he had never seen before and had no idea that he was about to experience that in his life. From the reading, the young Indian seems reluctant to look at the episode head on however he was a good help to his dad. I also observed that Nick is not a tough person, that he is sensitive, passionate and caring. "Oh, daddy can't you give her something to make her stop screaming?" I think that Nick might have been too young to be experiencing such a grownup episode as childbirth and under the circumstance as a C–section and mortality. I also think that his father may have pushed this experience on him a little too soon. As it turns out Nick still too young to really process the idea of mortality and Nick's father had to explain to him a whole lot more than he expected to do. "He was looking away so as not to see what his father was doing." "Nick did not watch. His curiosity had been gone for a long time." In the "Indian Camp" there was a young boy named Nick who goes on an adventure with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The eagle plays a large part in the Sun Dance for it is one of the Plains Indians' most sacred animal. The eagle flies high, being the closest creature to the Sun. Therefore it is the link between man and spirit, being the messenger that delivers prayers to the Wakan–Tanka (god). (Atwood) In addition to being a messenger, the eagle also represents many human traits. We can see what values and traits these cultures saw as being important in a person by those traits imposed upon such a sacred animal. The eagle is seen as courageous, swift, and strong. He has great foresight and knows everything. "In an eagle there is all the wisdom of the world." (Atwood) During the Sun Dance the eagle is the facilitator of communication between man and spirit. The Crow may be accompanied by a dancing eagle in his visions, the eagle "instructing him about the medicine acquired through the vision." (Atwood) The eagle's feathers can cure illnesses. During the Sun Dance a medicine man may use his eagle feather for healing, first touching the feather to the sun–pole then to the patient, transferring the energy from the pole to the ill. It is the buffalo, however, that makes up the main theme of the Sun Dance. In various stories it was the buffalo that began the ritual. An overview : The people of India have had a continuous civilization since 2500 B.C., when the inhabitants of the Indus River valley developed an urban culture based on commerce and sustained by agricultural trade. This civilization declined around 1500 B.C., probably due to ecological changes. During the second millennium B.C., pastoral, Aryan–speaking tribes migrated from the northwest into the subcontinent. As they settled in the middle Ganges River valley, they adapted to antecedent cultures. The political map of ancient and medieval India was made up of myriad kingdoms with fluctuating boundaries. • 23. The Clause Of Indian Land In Chapter 6, Wilkins discusses how the disclaimer clauses. These clauses keep states from exercising authority on Indian land (180). They are an "important but often overlooked tool in the arsenal available to tribes to assert their own sovereignty against state threats" (177). A specific example of a disclaimer clause is Wisconsin's territorial disclaimer of 1836 which prohibited territories or states from having any authority on Indian land (180). In Native American Church v. Navajo Tribal Council (1959) it was declared that Indian tribes actually have a higher status than states (179). This was a major victory for Indians in their fight for sovereignty. United States v. Rickert (1903) was also a win for sovereignty in that the Court prohibited South Dakota from taxing Indian land (185).After the verdict in Seminole Tribe v. Florida (1996), the balance of power between state and federal government leaned towards the states. Before this, negotiations with tribes had been conducted at the federal level and not with states (187). This was against the idea of sovereignty because now the states had more power over the tribes and could abuse that power for personal gain. In United States v. McBratney (1881), McBratney tried to argue that the federal government had no authority over a crime that occurred on Indian Territory, despite the fact that both parties were white. "Material" refers to the material resources, such as economic or military capabilities, population size, or other tangible resources available to an actor. The party system in India has been a great factor in giving meaning and life to democracy. With the passage of time, a new and healthy relationship has developed between the ruling party and the opposition parties on the one hand and between the public and the political parties on the other. Obviously, democracy is not a one–sided game and it needs two or more players in the form of ruling party, parties in opposition and the electorate. Liberty, equality, justice and fraternity are the very cornerstones of democracy. They are not available under dictatorship and utilitarian forms of government. Without freedom of speech, expression of faith, profession, and association, etc. democracy is meaningless. Similarly, right to own property is one of the fundamental rights under democracy. • 59. Indian American Communication : Indian Americans Indian–American Communication Indian–Americans are people who either originated themselves or descend from an ancestor who was born in India. The dynamics in a home where parents are native Indians and the children are first generation born Indian–Americans are quite different from other hyphenated American cultures. The languages used within the homes as well as the rituals to show levels of respect are critical things implemented within a family unit of this stature. The spoken and unspoken rules of communication shape the first generation Indian–Americans and how they interact with others in their generation. Indian–Americans ranging from ages 16–24 that are first generation Americans undergo the stages of minority identity development. They are commonly placed in environments which force them to question their own identity. As they communicate with peers, they question themselves and their personal beliefs and customs. Occasionally, they view the majority culture as better than their own and may develop negative feelings of their Indian household upbringing. One may feel the need to internalize the values of the dominant culture of the community and change to fit the status quo. This is especially difficult for Indian–Americans because so many things that they are taught within the home are not normal for the majority culture therefore presenting a major division and causing an uproar in the home. These spices are what imparts the cuisine an overwhelming and lingering essence that gives it a very distinctive identity. The delicate flavors, smell, taste, and color of the spices in these Indian dishes has what has attracted people since eternity. Spices can be defined as "strongly flavored" or "aromatic substances" that is commonly used as a condiment to flavor dishes. Western cuisine, like the Mexican or the Italian cuisine also use spices in their dishes. However, most of these cuisines use spices in their basic way – which means that it is usually one spice that stands out or gives the dish its unique taste even if it is being used with another herb or other spices. Indian cooking, on the other hand, uses multiple types of spices (sometimes up to 40) in varying combinations to come up with a variety of taste, each different from the ... However, a deep–dive into Indian cooking revealed a complete different picture. After reviewing some 2500 regional recipes, research found that at the molecular level, Indian food did go against the basic science of "food pairing." This meant that the cuisine put together different spices that were in contrast at their molecular levels and yet managed to create a brilliant, and unique taste. A Saga of Asian Indian Immigration" Das goes in depth on the South Asian immigration trends. While immigration has always occurred in the United States, different groups of people immigrated in mass amounts at different times. The majority of the first phase of Southern Asian immigration occurred during 1904 to 1917, and thousands of Southern Asians entered the United States from Canada. This was due to there being anti–Indian sentiments in Canada at the time, and soon after most immigrants arrived through San Francisco. One explanation for how Indian–Chic culture came to be is through the different popular culture movements that the United State underwent from the 1920s to modern day and its correlation to the immigrant groups arriving throughout the decades. • 65. The Origin Of The Ais Indians Long before the Western countries discovered North America, the Native Americans lived and thrived here. Historians believe these wandering peoples crossed over a land bridge that formed when the earth froze over, officially named Beringia, to get to North America. These nomadic Natives began spreading and forming different tribes around North America. One of the many tribes was the Ais Indians of Florida. By themselves, the tribes reigned the New World, but contact with the Westerns began their tragic demise. Although little is known about the origins of the Ais Indians, historians do know that they settled around 1000 BC. The Ais Indians were located on the Atlantic Coast of Florida, from present day Cape Canaveral to St. Lucie. This area would have covered four counties: Brevard, Indian River, St. Lucie, and the northern part of Martin. The Ais Indians resided in towns and villages along the Indian River in huts. Similar to any group of people, the Ais had a leader called the Cacique. The Cacique was determined by whom the most respected matrilineal family was in the tribe. Unlike the traditions of the West, the Cacique would rule through suggestion instead of force. Regarding to housing, the huts they lived in were framed with wood or sticks, then they were covered in palmetto leaves to form walls and a roof. As expected, the Cacique's hut was larger and more furnished than the rest of the huts. Their diet mainly consisted of fish, oysters, clams, snails, and sea grapes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The contrasting locations of a severely impoverished native American reservation and the upscale white community surrounding it are key factors in the development of Arnold's identity; he attempts to escape the toxic culture of depression, alcoholism, and despair on the reservation by abandoning the poverty of his hometown and attending a white school which, upon first glance, seems full of optimism and opportunity. • 71. The Indian Reservation System An Indian Reservation is a legal territory managed by a certain Native American tribe given to them, with only partial sovereignty, by the United States government. Only 326 of the country's 567 recognized tribes were granted land, but even the land they were granted is not sufficient enough to support a sustainable lifestyle. With no rights to their land, no sense of home, and a rapidly dying culture, native americans have been dealt with in the worst ways possible after their own massacre and consistently broken treaties. An analysis of the Indian reservation system in the US provides deeper insight to the idea that the treatment of natives has left profound, long–lasting negative impacts on the lives of native Americans. BODY PARAGRAPH NUMBER 1: (PUT IN TOPIC SENTENCE) Some officials in the early years of the American republic, such as President George Washington, believed that the best way to solve this "Indian problem" was simply to "civilize" the Native Americans. The goal of this civilization campaign was to make Native Americans as much like white Americans as possible by encouraging them convert to Christianity, learn to speak and read English, and adopt European–style economic practices such as the individual ownership of land and other property (including, in some instances in the South, African slaves). Analysis: This quote shows the urgency by the US government to wipe out native culture during the start of the reservation system. Words used in this quote such ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
