Famous Informative Speech
1.What was your favorite TV show when growing up?
Growing up I LOVED One Tree Hill–I watched it beginning to end (9 seasons) over 10 or 11 times. One Tree Hill is my die hard show.
2.What was your childhood nickname?
I'm one of the few people in the world who's never had a nickname. There isn't a shortened version of the name Sierra.
That said, it's not very nice, but sometimes my family calls me "Boohoo Baby." I am the youngest of 5, with 4 older brothers, and when I was around 3
or 4 my family and I went on a snow trip. We went sledding and I apparently didn't like the cold, so I cried the entire time–ruining the trip for my
brothers. So "Boohoo Baby" became my nickname.
Growing up, anytime I would get frustrated or my parents thought ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I know how to play the guitar, but I'm mostly a singer.
4.How do you recharge?
My favorite way to relax is to come home and watch TV. I've also started crocheting–it's a great way to de–stress.
5.What, if anything, have you ever re–gifted?
I've re–gifted a lot of my clothes to my fiancГ©'s little sister.
6.What would a "perfect" day look like for you?
The perfect day would entail waking up early and going to the zoo–followed by brunch with my fiancГ©, and spending time with my mom and family.
7.If you could have any one superpower, which would you choose?
I would be an empath; it's the power to control other people's emotions. I like that superpower better than mind–control because you're not making
people do things that they don't want to do.
8.Have you ever had a poem or song written about you?
Yes. My fiancГ© proposed to me by writing me a poem. In his journal he wrote a poem that was also a scavenger hunt with riddles. At the end of the
scavenger hunt, the riddles lead me to him, where he was waiting with a ring. It was a great proposal!
9.What is the oldest pair of shoes in your closet?
I am a shoe hoarder! My oldest pair of shoes are from high school and they're about 10 years old. They are a pair of hot pink knock off Toms that I still

My Speech
Before I began my speech I was very thrilled, excited, and motivated. I expressed a large desire to go first since there was no formal order of
speakers. Minutes before class started, rehearsed my speech a few times to ensure that I have my content sharp and that I am following the outline to
my best ability. Afterwards, it was only minutes before Dr. Lora said "It is 8 on my watch, so let us get started." Right then and there, I got up and
approached the stage with confidence. Another important factor that made me feel prepared was not only the rehearsing but it was the content. I know
my friend Adam Arata very well, so it was easy to talk highly about him. So, overall the most important thing that made me feel well–prepared to go
first was the content and the practice.
During the speech: As I indicated earlier, I was confident before my speech and that was no different for the way I felt during my speech. This speech
was a little odd for me despite the content. I didn't have any notecards so if there was a time when I would forget a word or a line, I would have to
make it up on the spot which I did several times. Furthermore, despite the number of times I have presented, I was a little nervous this time when I was
speaking. This was evident by the delivery of my speech. I spoke clearly but there would be times when it didn't flow. However, for the most part, I
felt a great level of comfort. I began to look at people I feel extremely comfortable with when speaking, which

Phraseology: Language and Success in Life Essay
I would like to think that I arrived at where I am today because of my good looks, but that would be far from the truth. I'm a quiet person with
average looks, and I usually do not get noticed when walking out in public. My experiences have molded me into the person that I am today. Those
experiences were created through the different forms of language that I used. Language has empowered me to be the success that I consider myself to
be today. I have used language to gained social acceptance, work in professional environments, and encourage other.
Social acceptance is an integral part of being human. To our ancestors, social acceptance was necessary for their survival. In more recent times, people

It is considered code switching because I used the new language to feel belongingness to the people that I was meeting in that area. (Code
Switching) I not only toggled my language use to make friends, but to also communicate with classmates. Being socially accepted by classmates
may not be detrimental, but I feel it is necessary to be successful in the class. I have been out of college for several years, and now that I have
returned, I have found that there is a younger breed of students in my classes. I speak as though someone my age should be the norm and they are
the alien invasion, but in reality, it's just the opposite. I am the alien. The majority of my classmates are just arriving from High School. Compared
to me they are young and inexperienced. Several of my classmates have a good understanding on the commitment it will take to succeed in college
and others seem to be there for something to do during the day. Either way, I must communicate, because I come in peace. I always like to befriend
my classmates, not so much for lasting long term friendships, but for help if I miss something the instructor has said. To do so, I need find a common
ground to start a conversation. Sometimes I get lucky and sit next to a social person, get paired up by the instructor, or break the ice with a light
hearted joke. Whatever the circumstance is, speaking their language is important. Last semester in my Public Speaking class I sat in the front row next

The Art Of Public Speaking Summary
In chapter one of The Art of Public Speaking , Lucas begins by talking about the power of public speaking he lists all the incredible people foreign
and domestic who have spread there ideas and influences through the art of public speaking. Lucas uses a quote from the Greek leader Pericles
,"One who forms a judgement on any point but cannot explain" it clearly " might as well never have thought at all on the subject" (
Lucas,2012,p.4) Lucas uses this point to clarify the fact that you have to know a lot about the subject you are speaking on to gain credibility.
Later on in chapter one Lucas talks about developing confidence while speaking in front of a group of people . Lucas goes on to give statistics like
public speaking is the number one fear for 40% of americans according to a 2001 Gallup Poll. After stating some statistics he begins to give some
tips on how to gain confidence in public speaking. Lucas ends chapter one by discussing speaking in a multicultural world. America is the most
diverse society on earth, therefore as cultural diversity increases speechmaking becomes more complex. the complexity comes from the differences
in languages and meaning. Even basic messages are culturally based. Lucas is trying to convey that you have to be culturally aware when you are
giving speeches to a large group of people. After reading chapter 1 of The Art of Public Speaking , I have came to the realization that preparing for a

Famous Persuasive Speech
Cleveland, OH. –– Cleveland is in the spotlight this week and its own governor decided to skip out on the biggest event of them all –– the Republican
National Convention
Ohio Governor John Kasich is miles away from the convention venue held at the Quicken Loans Arena, holding multiple events with state delegations
at hotels, headlining a state party reception, and speaking at the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce at the same time delegates conducted
their states roll call vote to make Donald Trump's nomination official.
In his mid–afternoon event, Kasich held a reception where over 1,500 Ohioans gathered at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The party scenery was
pictured like a major victory –– jumbotron playing pictures of the campaign trail, loud classic rock music, drinks and cake pops. ... Show more content

Two months ago, Kasich became the last GOP candidate to drop out, making Trump the presumptive nominee. If he would have gone forward, Kasich
told the crowd he would have told voters things that weren't true.
"We hear a lot about negative and division and polarization," Kasich said. "Let me tell you. I've never been more satisfied professionally. We left the
race abruptly. And the reason why we did is that I became convinced, that in one way or another, to go forward I would have to tell people things that I
didn't think were true."
The party was thrown to celebrate and thank Ohioans for their work they did on his failed presidential bid.
"I asked for this to be done so I could have an opportunity to thank you all for your work," Kasich told the crowd. "I can't thank you enough for
everything you've done."
During his short seven minute remarks, Kasich avoided mentioning the GOP nominee, instead using his past campaign stump speech of positivity and
unity to contrast the difference between himself and his former

Self Evaluation Essay
The greatest start to the best speech is a good topic. The topic needs to be modern, up to date, interesting and fun. All of this is depending on your
audience as well, so you wouldn't want to give a speech on the first phones invented to fifth graders. The topic should appeal to the audience, and
since most of my speeches will be done in my communication class my audience will be current college students just like myself. This makes it a little
easier preparing a speech because I am a college student as well, so I have a bit of an idea of what may or may not appeal to my audience. There are
many things that I need to consider before giving a speech, things like, how to be fully prepared with my information, how to not bore my audience to
death, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
And being a college student myself I know how easy it is to lose attention on something. So I need to make sure during my speech to make it
interesting and bring a visual aide because I know that, that may help me share my information better with students who learn better with visual aids as
well as I do. As stated in our Frealeigh and Tuman textbook "If you want audience members to actively listen to your speech and ignore everything else
going on you must motivate them to focus on what you're saying. By selection supporting materials that appeal to your listeners interest, you sweeten
the odds that they will pay attention to you." So with this I feel that by getting something that most of my classmates or audience can connect with, will
make them feel the need to pay attention to what I'm saying and actually have their full attention the entire time.
I feel like also learning what my classmate's interests are may help me grab and keep their attention longer. Learning how to connect my topic to
things they may like, for instance sports, famous people, or politics may help me peek their interest and keep their mind on me and what I am saying
rather than looking around or look at their

Essay about Almost Famous: Sex, Drugs, and Rock-n-Roll
"I'm a golden god," Russell Hammond shouts from a roof top as he is about to jump off into a pool from a bad acid trip. The iconic rock–n–roll scene
of inflated egos and strung out rock stars. However, this is a rare occurrence in Almost Famous. It is a story of a boy, William Miller (Patrick Fugit),
becoming a man while learning about the rock–n–roll culture with his only true friend, his tape recorder. William, age fifteen, is traveling with the
band Stillwater to interview them for a Rolling Stone article, along the way he has many interesting experiences. Some of these including letting all the
groupies stay in his room, almost crashing on an airplane with the band, and falling in love with the illustrious Penny Lane. However, plot... Show more

The final two main characters are Anita Miller (Zooey Deschanel) and her mother Elaine Miller (Frances McDormand). These characters are foils of
each other and thus give William a well–rounded childhood. While mother Elaine hates rock music, daughter Anita worships it. When Anita turns
eighteen she decides to leave home to become a flight attendant. Upon leaving she gives her records to William claiming 'They will change your
life.' This gives William his first encounter with true rock and does in fact change his life. Mother Elaine may be portrayed as the overbearing and
oppressive mother by Anita, but she really just seems to be concerned about her son's wellbeing. A.O. Scott gives an unique description of Elaine,
"Their protective mother, a college professor portrayed with glowing intelligence and scary intensity..." If it is not for Elaine, William would most
likely have taken drugs at some point and may have never finished his article. Because of her, the audience is given the constant reminder that the
world the band lives in is not the same as the world William lives in. The director of this film is

What Has Been Gone After The War Essay
Let me tell you a little about what's been going on since the war's been going on. When he first left I just stayed in the house and cooked and did
things I would normally do. Then a couple weeks after he was gone, I got a job. More employment opportunities opened for women. I got a job
where he used to work. At a factory where we lived. Women became the main population of the factories, and women's movement progressed. The only
bad thing about working was that I got lower pays then my husband. Soon African–Americans started showing up. They also got recruited a bunch of
jobs. Finally the war ended. It was November 11th, 1918 at 11:00 am. I woke up early for work wondering if my husband is coming back from the war.

But we still didn't have our money that was lost in the bank.
In 1920 the United States added the eighteenth amendment. Which outlawed the production and consumption of alcohol and was more
commonly known as Prohibition. In 1923 we got a telephone. This was very exciting for all of us. We've never seen anything like this before.
Probably because we live out in the middle of nowhere. We couldn't figure out how to use it for a couple of days. But then we finally figured it out.
Then in 1925 we moved from Savannah,Georgia to Casper,Wyoming. This was a very long journey for my husband, two kids, and I. We had to
travel by our car. It was small but it was just enough room for the four of us. We had to sell some stuff that we had and get money for it. We also
had to leave some stuff in Georgia. It took us around two days to get there. We only stopped for food twice, because we have limited amounts of
money. And we had to save most of it for the house.
Finally we got to where we need to be. It was the most beautiful place we've ever seen. We lived here for the rest of our lives. My husband passed away
at age 83 and I passed away at age 84 we lived the happiest life ever. My kids both got married my oldest son Jack to a beautiful lady named Jane.
And they had three little girls, Mary, Janet, Kay. My daughter got married to a wonderful man named Shawn. They had four kids. One set of twin
boys Robert and Jack II, they also had a set of twin daughters, June and

High School Common Core State Standards
In the last six years a new standards system has been created for high school students in order to help them prepare for college classes; this system is
the Common Core State Standards Initiative. The Common Core system, developed in 2009, addresses both mathematics and English language arts. It
creates a system of standards that map out skills and abilities from grades K–12 that need to be focused upon in order for students to be successful in
the future.
The creators of the Common Core State Standards wanted the system to become universal however, many educators began to criticize certain aspects
of the standards, such as the overall effectiveness of the standards and types of elements that are included in the standards. Among the many school
systems in the nation, debates arose around whether it would be better for them to adopt the Common Core standards or to create their own standards.
Purpose of Report
Rather than address both elements of the standards, the purpose of this report is to analyze high school Common Core State Standards for English
Language Arts and related debates. Topics include:
A discussion of the basic elements of the curriculum
An analysis of responses
An analysis of status and results
Results of Report
This report concludes that Common Core State Standards for English Language attempts to prepare high students for college level English Language
Arts classes and create national standards that are available for every state to use. However,

The Speech Was A Success
Overall, I believe that our speech was a success. Sonia and I wrote our outline together and we followed Toulmin logic for our format. We started with
the board point that everyone know driving under the influence is dangerous and then narrowed by adding how many people get multiple DUI and
finally the consequences of driving under the influence. In this way, we had a logical and persuasive argument that we both understood. We also
decided who would speak which parts on Friday which meant that we both knew what was happening and had time to practice and prepare. I think that
when we were speaking we had smooth transitions between our different parts. However, because we did not have the opportunity to practice our speech

In my call to action, I used words like implore and I asked my audience to consider their safely and the safety of all the people they care about. I
was doing my best to pull them into my topic and make them consider why it was important and how it affected them before they voted. I told them
specifically what I wanted them to do and why they should do it. I believe that my delivery was forceful and well–articulated. Lastly, my rebuttal was
interactive and lasting. I thought extensively about what to do for my rebuttal and I guessed that my opposition would bring up that taking away a
person's driver's license would take away their livelihood and I knew I would be able to rebut this with statistics. However, I also wanted to make a
more lasting impression than that. By making everyone stand up and display my statistic my goal was to make the issue more real to them and really
allow them to see what I was saying. Saying numbers normally make a lasting impression on people, but showing them that point in a visual form will. I
was rather proud of that. I was able to successfully rebut most of the points that the opposition made. I also felt good about calling the opposition out

Essay on Spiral of Silence
Public communication is very important when in a discussion with coworkers and such. The one weakness that some people run into is silence. The
spiral of silence theory by Elisabeth Noelle–Neumann explains why certain people fall under the pressure and seclude to silence. Silence may not
always be a bad thing, but according to a study by Lucy J. MacGregor, the fact is that silence during a speech or conversation is absolutely bad. With
this, silence while talking to a large group negatively affects the listeners in a way in which some words in the speech will not be remembered. The
point is that silence tends to destroy people's speeches. Words are forgotten in the speech; Loss of the attention by the listeners happens and the... Show

In every high school, there are the jocks, the band, the nerds, the people on drugs, the religious and so on and so forth. Some of these groups were
known as the popular group and some were known as the creeps. These names that are given to the groups still happen in everyday life when you are
older and this also affects whether or not the person will speak up about a certain topic. When certain groups have to keep secrets from other groups
for safety reasons, this does not help the silence situation at all. The fact that groups are keeping secrets from others means that they do not trust
anyone else which forces groups into silence and they cannot voice their opinion anymore. The Spiral of Silence has a key voice in the workplace,
which involves the use of presentations. One thing affected by the listener not wanting to support the speaker is the fact of whether or not the listener is
actually paying attention (Denham–Vaughan 7). It has been said that listeners are more than likely to lose their attention when there is a break in the
speech by the speaker. When this happens, the listener is more than likely going to jumble up sentences together and guess the wrong word to finish the
current statement that the speaker broke the pause with. This happens because the train of thought is said to be interrupted and lose focus on the
certain topic. Viewing the eyes and seeing the horizontal and vertical movement

Essay about Patrick Henry's Famous Speech
Patrick Henry's Famous Speech
'Give me liberty or give me death.' These famous words were uttered by Patrick Henry on March 23, 1775, as a conclusion to his speech delivered to
the Virginia House of Burgesses. Within his speech, he uses the three rhetorical appeals (ethos, logos, and pathos) to convey a feeling of urgency
toward the changes occurring in policy within the Americas implemented by the British government. He cleverly uses these appeals to disrupt the
paradigm that Great Britain is going to let the American people have any liberty.
The Purpose of this speech is to gain support for a freedom movement from the British government. One can see this when he states, ?Has Great Britain

The very first sentence, ?No man thinks more highly than I do of the patriotism, as well as abilities, of the very worthy gentlemen who have just
addressed the house. But?? conveys the message of him caring about what others have said before he spoke. It also implies that he disagrees with
some of their views, which he goes on to explain through deductive reasoning in his speech
Patrick Henry uses logos in his speech by talking about Great Britain and how its military is infringing on the right of the people living in the
Americas, and how ?a British guard shall be stationed in every house? when there is no war. The point he establishes about the extent of British abuse
within America can also be viewed as pathos.
Within Patrick Henry's speech, he states, ?? it is natural to man to indulge in the illusions of hope. We are apt to shut our eyes against a painful truth.?
Here he is talking about the people in the House of Burgesses not realizing that the British are infringing on their rights as citizens.
[And what have we to oppose to them? Shall we try argument? Sir, we have been trying that for the last ten years. Have we anything new to offer
upon the subject? Nothing. We have held the subject up in every light of which it is capable; but it has been all in vain.]

Music : The Importance Of Music In The Film
Music has been playing a big role in film since sound could be added to a film, which takes us all the way back to the early 1900's. Music may be
something we listen to in the car, but songs can be used to portray many different factors in a film. Music can hint the viewer as to what the mood of
characters may be, the setting of a given place, or even the time frame in which the movie took place. Music helps the director steer their movie in one
way or another, depending on their choice of music. The movie Almost Famous featured portions of 68 different songs performed by various artists
throughout the 60's and early 70's.
For a movie that revolves around music it comes to no surprise that in the very first minutes of the movie playing a song is already playing. The song
played is The Chipmunk Song by The Chipmunks. Now when you look at the screen, you'd find yourself a bit confused as to why Christmas music is
playing during what appears to be summer time. This selection proves to be significant because the Christmas music opens us up to the personality of
Anita and William's over–protective, christian–based, traditional valued mother. Their mother seeks to protect the kids from everything of the world
which is where she celebrates Christmas in September, because it isn't commercialized at that time.
Due to the rebellious nature of Anita, and she and her mother's disagreement on appropriate music, she decides to move out. In this early part of the
movie, she makes her

Speak With Courage Speech Analysis
Did you know that public speaking is ranked as the number one fear in America? This fear, called glossophobia, is "as common as fingers and toes."
(McDermott,5). Many of us have experienced anxiety during a speech. It might have happened to you, and also it might have happened to your
friends too. It happens to everyone, even to those people who today are famous and excellent speakers. The book "Speak with Courage" written by
Martin McDermott, author and master teacher, is a unique guide to the art of confident public speaking. This book has helped thousands of students to
overcome their fears and rise above speech anxiety by using the right techniques. I totally agree with McDermott when he claims that everyone can

Everything in this earth is in a continuous state of enhancing, refining, raising ...improving. In order to make progress we should know what prevent
us from being successful, what specifically causes this type of social anxiety. Form my own experiences, I have realized that the fear of speaking in
public is triggered by three things – fear of forgetting, fear of judgment and expectation of perfection. Even though I practice before I give a speech
that is not enough for me to succeed. Being in front of the audience makes me feel anxious, nervous, apprehensive and concerned. Sometimes these
symptoms makes me forget everything. As McDermott said, "Much of the pressure and anxiety of public speaking arises from the unrealistic
expectation of recalling every word of talk in its exact order." So I try not to memorize all the information, instead I connect my ideas by using
different methods. In this way I manage the fear of forgetting. In addition speaker, including myself, are also concerned about the audience's
judgment. The main purpose is to grab their attention, share ideas and have a good feedback form them. If you show that you know the material very
well, you are enough prepared and confident in yourself fear starts to minimize. The opposite will result in loss of self–esteem, concentration and
control of the situation. And the third cause of stage fright is expectation of perfection. Personally, when I have a speech I practice a lot in order to

Martin Luther King
There are many important things that shape the delivery of your speech. Among the most important parts of delivery involved are voice production and
articulation. Other important parts of delivery include methods, gestures, eye contact, and the clothing that you wear. Martin Luther King Jr. is
considered one of the most influential speakers of this century. Thedelivery and language of King's speeches has earned him this label. In the next
paragraph I shall examine King's delivery and why he is considered such a great speaker. If your audience cannot hear you, your speech servers very

choose the memorization method. During the speeches of
King we viewed he never losses eye contact with the audience. This is one of the reasons why I choose the memorization method. I also feel King's
speeches came straight from his heart. King was a Baptist minister and was without a doubt filled with the spirit of god. I feel King's speeches were
influenced by the spirit that lived within his heart. The book states that your appearance should be in harmony with your message. King's speeches
were all based on serious spiritual and political issues and a suit and tie were the attire that he choose to wear. King was a educated man and was
without a doubt educated in the area of fundamental speech skills. The textbook states that the most effective language was simple, clear, and direct.
King practiced all three of these when performing his speeches. King's language was simple in that the people he was speaking to could comprehend
what he was speaking about. He was very clear about the points in which he was speaking about. He also came directly to the reason why he was
speaking, he did not beat around the bush.
King used emotions to sway people to see things his way. King

The Vanity of Celebrity Fame: "Sunset Boulevard" and...
A celebrity is not a person known for his/her talent or achievement, but an individual recognized for his/her reputation created by the media. The phase

celebrities than their usual images – either corrupted by the encircling media, overloads oneself with self–indulgence, or just mocks celebrity in a broad

Besides being at the brink of madness caused by her self–denial of the passing of her fame, Norma Desmond had also become rather
sexual–transgressive. Some male traits shown in Norma consist of her dominance – she demands over Max, financial independence – owns factories
which constantly makes profits and her assertive nature – she fearlessly confronts her passion for Joe. The way Norma is ridiculously insane to a
degree of dark humour brings sympathy, entertainment and a corrupted depiction of celebrity to audiences.
Starred by William Holden, the male protagonist, given one of the most mundane names, Joe Gillis, is a laconic character who interacts with Norma in
a reciprocally dependent relationship. Without Gillis, Norma feels lifeless, loveless and powerless, she depends on him emotionally, and conversely,
without Norma, Gillis is homeless, finance–less and jobless, he depends on her materialistically. Also, identical to Norma, Gillis is sexually
transgressive as well. He possesses many feminine identities such as his betrayal of integrity – Joe and Norma swaps roles. He conforms to the reality
where his scripts are rejected and adopt the easier role of being Norma Desmond's gigalo – weakness of character. In Gillis, audiences see a man who
forfeited his personal happiness to gain money–oriented power over others – however, what he really gained is nothing, Norma nor her money can give
him power. The

JFK Speech Comparison Essay
Speeches are one of the most useful tools possible when addressing a group of people, be it a large crowd or small gathering. Through a speech, the
lector can successfully express a variety of emotions and even toy with the listeners' emotions, through their specific choice of words or tone of voice.
The way a speech is delivered can make people feel any range of emotions from determined and hopeful, to outraged and vengeful. The use of a written
speech, gives the lector time to think over their words and analyze what will best help them get their point across through different word variations or
even sentence structures. Two very famous speeches in American History, Martin Luther King's I have a Dream and John F. Kennedy's Inaugural

Continuously throughout his speech, King refers to the movement for freedom as a beacon of light. It is something the people of America should
follow as it promises hope for the future. Also, King compares the racial injustices to burning fire by saying "seared in the flames of withering
injustice". The use of powerful words such as "seared" and "flames" really stand out to the listeners and gives them a sense of pain and despair, helping
them to see the wrongdoings of the people who allowed these injustices. King goes on to say "the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty.." giving
listeners a sense that African Americans were cast into this imprisonment of injustice, not through their own faults, but through the oppression of
others. While King uses metaphors to bring the people to sympathize and empathize with the African Americans, Kennedy employs the use of
metaphors to create a sense unity and duty. Kennedy's metaphor when he says "the torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans..."
references the Olympics, symbolizing the passing on of responsibilities and duties that Americans owed to the country. Furthermore, Kennedy then later
uses the metaphors "jungle of suspicion" and "chains of poverty" to get people listening to think of these things as a common goal to fight and defeat,
further establishing a sense of purpose in his mission. The use of metaphors allowed both King and Kennedy to connect their message with a concrete
image or emotion, to better connect with those

The Elements Of A Great Speech By Martin Luther King Jr.
Life is always easier when there is a way to find the answer. A cake is easier to bake with a recipe to follow, and a great speech needs a formula or list
of aspects to include. Good morning Mrs Roche and students. For my presentation today I will explore a formula I have created that contains all the
elements of a great speech. I produced this formula while I was studying some of the work of one of the best speakers and leaders of all time: Martin
Luther King Jr.
Martin Luther King Jr was an American Baptist Minister, Activist, Humanitarian, and leader in the African American Civil Rights Movement. He was
known for his amazing speaking skills and visionary speeches, which he used to successfully make a non–violent movement against segregation and
injustice during his time. He was a great speaker and a great leader. So what better of a leader than Martin Luther King Jr to help identify what key
aspects need to be put into the formula. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Martin Luther King's speeches are considered 'great' because he manages to connect with the audience through their emotional ties to the event he is
talking about. In his eulogy for the death of three girls killed in the bombing of their church he used the words :
"These children – unoffending, innocent and beautiful – were victims of one of the most vicious and tragic crimes ever perpetuated against humanity",
this language both pays respect towards the girls but also links back to his fight against injustice and this is exactly what the listeners will respond to.
They will be grateful to his kind words but will agree with him that it wasn't fair for the girls to die so innocent and young, and that they want this to

In life, we rarely have the chance for a do–over, but I feel like returning to college is mine. Throughout high school, my grades were never above
average and until about a couple of years ago I considered myself to be unintelligent. What I failed to see was my level of commitment. Once I began

The art speech was not necessarily my best moment when it came to audience analysis. I should have followed through with making the speech
less about the assignment and more about who I was presenting it to. The dragon and persuasive speech probably would have been better had I not
had so much information, I really saw how it affected the way I looked as far as confidence was concerned. Looking at my personal anecdote speech
I think that was my shining moment. I am not only saying that because of the grade I received, but because I owned the material and it showed. As
far as maintaining ethos, I would have to say that was during my informative speech. I felt like I knew what I was talking about in the dragon speech
more at the Q & A than during the speech, but during my energy drink presentation I really had the material down. During the self–evaluations I know
that I properly analyze what I did wrong, though I am not sure I was able to fix everything I set out to. Strategically speaking, I have a ways to go
with choosing a topic, learning how to control my nervous energy, and to avoid excluding my audience should investigate more efficiently.

A Streetcar Named Desire By Susan Glaspell
In any great story, one can find a unique trait that sets it apart from all others. Susan Glaspell 's Trifles would be incomplete if not for the lonely
farmhouse. Romeo and Juliet is nothing if not a tragedy about star–crossed lovers. The tales that we now know as classics received that label because
something about them was just too great to ignore. Although many dramas and stories often find strengths in their story or setting, A Streetcar Named
Desire demonstrates the significance of powerful characters. Specifically, Blanche DuBois is arguably the most essential character to the plot. Raised
on a plantation among the wealthy, she is a ringing example of sophistication and femininity. The way she speaks and acts portray this, as her
words are more often than not poetic in nature and almost too flawless. She 's also able to use her words to manipulate others, especially when it
comes to dodging questions about her mysterious past. All in all, Blanche is a truly well crafted character because of how unique and unalike she is
to any of the other characters in A Streetcar Named Desire, and most of it can be attributed to her distinctive voice. Blanche 's character is, as a whole,
excessively poetic and complicated in the way she talks. Her pattern of speech serves to reflect her comfortable upbringing and status as a more refined
and elite citizen when compared to the other characters of the play. Specifically, when speaking to Mitch, Blanche uses poetic speech to make

The Importance Of William Shakespeare's Influence On The...
Through evolution and changing social times, modern society has begun to question the literary works of famous poets such as William Shakespeare,
for his use of predominantly male representation, overused themes, and debased comedy style. Nevertheless, although social progress is underway to
broaden the range of literary works studied, it is important to examine Shakespeare in order to recognize his exclusive influence on the English
language, depiction of universal characters, and representation of transferable lessons. Although, the overall ideologies involved are not agreeable to
civilizations today, it cannot be erased from history, thus is imperative to a student's knowledge of literature Vocabulary is a tool given to society in
order to articulate thoughts, sentiments, wishes, and expression, hence the mandatory study of the English language throughout elementary school and
so forth into post secondary education. Shakespeare has always been a figure of praise and reference as he attributed to the creation of many of the
terms society uses today. In classrooms students learn of the devices he imposed onto the English language "He invented over 1700 of our common
words by changing nouns into verbs, changing verbs into adjectives, connecting words by changing nouns into verb..." (Mabillard). Consequently, it is
not denied, how Shakespeare physically impacted language as he has added hundreds of terms into scholarly dictionaries, mandating his influence. In

Use And Manipulation Of The English Language
The proper use and manipulation of the English language, skills so difficult to learn, reap a great deal of power when mastered. As hyperbolic as it
sounds, being able to use and manipulate the English language properly into our writing and speaking can be very influential in advocating ideas
towards a community. "As a speaker, you have some influence on the extent to which others see you as having authority" (Fontaine and Smith 13).
To gain authority over an audience, one must write and speak with confidence and be skilled enough to use proper English: that is, following the
standard rules of grammar and incorporating complex sentences and a wide range of vocabulary. In addition, the manipulation of the English
language in writing and speaking, with the use of figurative language and compositional techniques, makes the writing more persuasive. Speaking
properly and effectively will change the way we talk and will change the way people will listen to us. By displaying knowledge and skill towards the
widely accepted language, we make our speaking and writing more impactful, gaining authority over our audience. It was through my past experience
that I came to a realization that impactful speaking and writing, possible through the use of proper English, serve as an agent for grasping my
audience's attention. Being elected as the former President of my high school, it was my obligation to lead nearly a thousand students. With such an
honorable role, every task required to

The fact that JFK just won the presidential election illustrates that this speech is a product of pathos, he won America over because they trust him.
Pathos is a strong element of a writing piece because once the reader trusts the writer or speaker they are willing to listen to anything they have to offer.
The overall theme in this speech unifies the whole speech. JFK's speech shows a theme of progression. This is the perfect theme for an innaugural
speech because the whole goal of the country is to progress as a whole once a new president is elected. He shows this theme of rhetoric in his quote,
"We observe today not a victory of party but a celebration of freedom–symbolizing an end as well as a beginning–signifying renewal as well as change"
(JFK). He uses the word, "we" and "progress" to help signify unity. Repition is combined into the speech to make the theme stand out. "Let both

The whole point of a speech is to get a message across to an audience or a group of people. If you speed through a speech and just mumble, you are not

When giving a speech it is handy to have a list of key concepts with you that you want to get across to your audience. Writing out your whole speech
will not do. Writing out your full speech may cause you to have your head buried in your notes for your entire presentation. As a high school
student you can get away with this, but in the real world no one will trust you unless you look them in the eye when talking to them. I must admit
that it is very hard for me to look at people when I am giving a speech, but it is imperative that I do so. I not only want my audience to understand
what I am trying to say to them, but I want them to believe me as well. Also, when you don't face your audience they tend to lose interest and start
conversations or activities of their own. In order to gain the trust and respect of your audience, it is absolutely necessary to look them in the eye when
speaking to them.
I hate it when people speak in monotone, but it happens to the best of us. It is so boring to hear a speech that is given in a monotonous voice without

Understanding Hamlet's Famous Speech in Shakespeare's Hamlet
Hamlet's classsic "To be or not to be..."(Hamlet, prince of Denmark, 3.1.57) speech really shows who he is. Obviously Hamlet is horribly depressed.
We have already seen several examples of this, but this speech gives us a clear picture of his sadness. More importantly however, his speech shows his
weakness and indecisiveness. Hamlet is consistently melancholy, but he never really acts on it; he just kind of wallows around, full of self–pity and
loathing. Finally, it gives us Hamlet's reason for not committing suicide. Throughout the play he seems to wish for death and here we find out why he
doesn't bring it on himself. This also gives us a window into his personality. This... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As though he only wishes to rest and forget his troubled soul. We see here for the first time why he wants to die. It is not that he feels there is too
much pain or strife in life, but that he is tired with dealing with it and exausted by his efforts. Hamlet says in this speech, in as plain of language as
he can, that he is depressed and wants to die. But, he has said that before. This speech gives us our first clear indication as to his reason for craving
death. More interestingly, Hamlet shows here his fundamental cowardice and fear. He has been going on for the whole play about how terrible his life
is and how much pain and suffering he has had to endure, and he starts out the speech on this note. This is the first indication of his weakness.
Hamlet it seems would rather bemoan his troubles than solve them. He goes on and on about his crappy life but rarely, if ever, even tries to do
anything about it. Even in his desire for death he will speak but not act. He has wished for ceath at least ten times during the play, but when it
comes right down to it Hamlet is to scared to act on his desire. He doesn't decide against suicide because of some noble realization (that life is far to
precious to be wasted for example), he is just too scared of the afterlife. Hamlet, in the play up to this point, claims to be in dire straits but his
paralyzing fear keeps him from action. He would rather suffer with

Famous American Informative Speech
"Be sure you put your feet in the right place, then stand firm." That's what Abraham Lincoln once said when he was alive. There are 3 reasons about
why I believe that we should tear down the monuments of a famous American. What Abraham meant by his famous quote is that people should defend
the right things instead of the wrong issues. My three reasons why include not recreating the past, a protest between blacks and whites, and
nevertheless, another civil war. To begin with, one of my reasons why I say that we should tear down the monuments is not to recreate the past. The
reason why I say that is because in the past, many things happen to black people such as slavery and they've been dealing with segregation for a long
time. For instance, in Charlottesville over the past weekend, there was a protest between a group of KKK, neo Nazi, and white supremacists
fighting and chanting "you will not replace us." We should tear it down so people won't be able to think about the past and start to say a fight and
say hateful things about other races. Some of the people in the world don't like people going against one of another and wish that all the people could

We should study spoken language as it is truly unique and we can see the effect and beauty of spoken language in works of great orators and writers.
Spoken language is truly an art, which involves many techniques to perfect and master it. One of the techniques is rhetoric. Rhetoric is the art of
effective or persuasive speaking or writing. The ancient Greeks first developed public speaking. Under Roman, influence public speaking developed
further. This was heavily under the influence of Cicero and Aristotle. The speeches I have chosen to study are the closing speech of Atticus Fitch in
the novel to "Kill a Mockingbird" and the "Battle of Falkirk" by William Wallacein the movie "Brave heart." Atticus's speech occurs in a courtroom in

This is done in order to engender pity and sympathy towards Tom Robinson in the courtroom and thus motivate the jury to return an innocent verdict.
Atticus uses a combination of convincing and logical evidence, but is also very passionate as he is not doing this as a "lip" service. He was doing
this, as he could not live with himself if he did not do his best to defend Tom Robinson despite the chances of winning the court case. The use of
emotive language and well–reasoned arguments makes the case more persuasive and plausible. Atticus is rather astute in showing compassion for
Mayella, this shows honesty and integrity in his character therefore the jury is more inclined to believe him over the witnesses. Atticus makes a direct
plea to the jury but he does this on a personal level. Atticus pauses to create more impact as it is dramatically effective as it focuses our attention to the
truth. Atticus throws the burden of blame on Mayella making her culpable of the crime that happened and not his client. He uses repetition to
emphasise his case and evidence. Atticus's tone becomes increasing aggressive and uncompromising however, he remains courteous and dignified
throughout. Atticus highlights to the jury the sheer arrogance of the witnesses of the state who believed their word would not be questioned over a
black man. Atticus shouted "TEMERITY" as he had become so frustrated. This is the only point in the speech where

Creative Writing: Ham Sandwich
Just as I was about to ask Phil what he meant when he said he couldn't control himself around me, Chris and PJ return. "Dan! Earth to Dan!" Chris
says, clicking his fingers in my face. "Huh? What?" I reply, receiving an eye roll and chuckle from Chris. "I asked you whether a ham sandwich is
okay. You were so spaced out in your own world you didn't hear me." Suddenly my hands became more interesting than Chris' words. "Ham sounds
great. Thank you Chris. You too PJ." Chris hands me the sandwich and I rip open the plastic. PJ hands Phil a cheese sandwich. "PJ, you know I hate
cheese." PJ slaps his forehead. "Can't you just take out the cheese?" "Here, Phil have mine." I hand over the sandwich and take the cheese sandwich
out of his

Rhetorical Analysis Of Lucas 's ' The Art Of Public Speaking
Lisa, head publisher of a rising publishing firm company. She starts her day by speaking to her publicity team on some new marketing strategies. Lisa
then spends time on the phone talking with all of the editors she represents. At a lunch meeting Lisa talks to the executive board on a couple of
manuscripts she has been championing. Would one think that Lisa is a public speaker? Most people would say no, but after reading Stephen Lucas the
Art of Public Speaking, I have learned that Lisa is a public speaker and is using her public speaking skills to inform her coworkers. Chapter 15 is
about speaking to inform an audience. Lucas begins this chapter with the types of informative speeches and some analysis and organization skills for
each topic. There are many ways to classify an informative speech, Lucas breaks it down into four main topics: objects, processes, events, and
concepts. Lucas begins this chapter by speaking on speeches about objects. Lucas defines an object as "Objects include anything that is visible,
tangible, and stable to form. ... Here are examples of subjects for speeches about objects e–book readers, Susan B. Anthony, service dogs, titanium,
human eye and Golden Gate Bridge" (Lucas, 2012, pg. 278.). Lucas reminds us that whatever subject a speaker will pick they must know that they
will not be able to tell everything on the subject. To instead pick the most important ideas the speaker wants to get across and use those to develop a
main point. Next Lucas shows

Title: Change for the Better
Purpose: To inform my audience of Ronald Reagan and his speech at the 1980 Republican National Convention and how it was influential for the US
at the time as well as its personal significance for me.
Central Idea: Ronald Reagan's speech at the 1980 Republican National Convention in Detroit was one that gave a sense of unification, hope, and
national pride among Americans at the time and still resonated with some Americans afterwards.

1.During his collegiate years, Reagan pursued "majors in sociology and economics while also playing athletics and continuing in performing arts
productions."
2."The year 1932 saw Reagan graduate from Eureka College and obtain a job as a sports radio host." (Biography.com)
C.As a post–collegiate young adult, Reagan saw to extend his relationship with the entertainment industry which would help develop his political status.
1.Reagan opted out of the radio career path to play roles in movies "for the Warner Brothers in 1937. Throughout the 1940s, Reagan was acting in
numerous movies in Hollywood and as a result he ended up moving to California." (Biography.com)
2.In addition to his filmography, "from 1947 to 1952, Ronald Reagan would partake in the Screen Actors Guild labor union, even becoming the
president of the union." During this timeframe, America was living through the beginning of the Cold War and the Second Red Scare; where most
Americans condemned communist ideologies. As a result, the Screen Actors Guild saw many actors "argue and dispute about communist principles in
the film industry." Reagan saw these arguments as a way to justify his political views and make him understand how he believed America should be run
(government–wise). This was the beginning of Reagan's political career as a conservative. (The White House)

Famous Informative Speech

  • 1. Famous Informative Speech 1.What was your favorite TV show when growing up? Growing up I LOVED One Tree Hill–I watched it beginning to end (9 seasons) over 10 or 11 times. One Tree Hill is my die hard show. 2.What was your childhood nickname? I'm one of the few people in the world who's never had a nickname. There isn't a shortened version of the name Sierra. That said, it's not very nice, but sometimes my family calls me "Boohoo Baby." I am the youngest of 5, with 4 older brothers, and when I was around 3 or 4 my family and I went on a snow trip. We went sledding and I apparently didn't like the cold, so I cried the entire time–ruining the trip for my brothers. I like that superpower better than mind–control because you're not making people do things that they don't want to do. 8.Have you ever had a poem or song written about you? Yes. My fiancГ© proposed to me by writing me a poem. In his journal he wrote a poem that was also a scavenger hunt with riddles. At the end of the scavenger hunt, the riddles lead me to him, where he was waiting with a ring. It was a great proposal! 9.What is the oldest pair of shoes in your closet? I am a shoe hoarder! My oldest pair of shoes are from high school and they're about 10 years old. They are a pair of hot pink knock off Toms that I still rock on the

  • 3. My Speech Before I began my speech I was very thrilled, excited, and motivated. I expressed a large desire to go first since there was no formal order of speakers. Minutes before class started, rehearsed my speech a few times to ensure that I have my content sharp and that I am following the outline to my best ability. Afterwards, it was only minutes before Dr. Lora said "It is 8 on my watch, so let us get started." Right then and there, I got up and approached the stage with confidence. Another important factor that made me feel prepared was not only the rehearsing but it was the content. I know my friend Adam Arata very well, so it was easy to talk highly about him. So, overall the most important thing that made me feel well–prepared to go first was the content and the practice. During the speech: As I indicated earlier, I was confident before my speech and that was no different for the way I felt during my speech. This speech was a little odd for me despite the content. I didn't have any notecards so if there was a time when I would forget a word or a line, I would have to make it up on the spot which I did several times. Furthermore, despite the number of times I have presented, I was a little nervous this time when I was speaking. This was evident by the delivery of my speech. I spoke clearly but there would be times when it didn't flow. However, for the most part, I felt a great level of comfort. I began to look at people I feel extremely comfortable with when speaking, which ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Phraseology: Language and Success in Life Essay I would like to think that I arrived at where I am today because of my good looks, but that would be far from the truth. I'm a quiet person with average looks, and I usually do not get noticed when walking out in public. My experiences have molded me into the person that I am today. Those experiences were created through the different forms of language that I used. Language has empowered me to be the success that I consider myself to be today. I have used language to gained social acceptance, work in professional environments, and encourage other. Social acceptance is an integral part of being human. To our ancestors, social acceptance was necessary for their survival. In more recent times, people have come to feel safe and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is considered code switching because I used the new language to feel belongingness to the people that I was meeting in that area. (Code Switching) I not only toggled my language use to make friends, but to also communicate with classmates. Being socially accepted by classmates may not be detrimental, but I feel it is necessary to be successful in the class. I have been out of college for several years, and now that I have returned, I have found that there is a younger breed of students in my classes. I speak as though someone my age should be the norm and they are the alien invasion, but in reality, it's just the opposite. I am the alien. The majority of my classmates are just arriving from High School. Compared to me they are young and inexperienced. Several of my classmates have a good understanding on the commitment it will take to succeed in college and others seem to be there for something to do during the day. Either way, I must communicate, because I come in peace. I always like to befriend my classmates, not so much for lasting long term friendships, but for help if I miss something the instructor has said. To do so, I need find a common ground to start a conversation. Sometimes I get lucky and sit next to a social person, get paired up by the instructor, or break the ice with a light hearted joke. • 5. The Art Of Public Speaking Summary In chapter one of The Art of Public Speaking , Lucas begins by talking about the power of public speaking he lists all the incredible people foreign and domestic who have spread there ideas and influences through the art of public speaking. Lucas uses a quote from the Greek leader Pericles ,"One who forms a judgement on any point but cannot explain" it clearly " might as well never have thought at all on the subject" ( Lucas,2012,p.4) Lucas uses this point to clarify the fact that you have to know a lot about the subject you are speaking on to gain credibility. Later on in chapter one Lucas talks about developing confidence while speaking in front of a group of people . Lucas goes on to give statistics like public speaking is the number one fear for 40% of americans according to a 2001 Gallup Poll. After stating some statistics he begins to give some tips on how to gain confidence in public speaking. Lucas ends chapter one by discussing speaking in a multicultural world. America is the most diverse society on earth, therefore as cultural diversity increases speechmaking becomes more complex. the complexity comes from the differences in languages and meaning. Even basic messages are culturally based. Lucas is trying to convey that you have to be culturally aware when you are giving speeches to a large group of people. Famous Persuasive Speech Cleveland, OH. –– Cleveland is in the spotlight this week and its own governor decided to skip out on the biggest event of them all –– the Republican National Convention Ohio Governor John Kasich is miles away from the convention venue held at the Quicken Loans Arena, holding multiple events with state delegations at hotels, headlining a state party reception, and speaking at the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce at the same time delegates conducted their states roll call vote to make Donald Trump's nomination official. In his mid–afternoon event, Kasich held a reception where over 1,500 Ohioans gathered at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Two months ago, Kasich became the last GOP candidate to drop out, making Trump the presumptive nominee. If he would have gone forward, Kasich told the crowd he would have told voters things that weren't true. "We hear a lot about negative and division and polarization," Kasich said. "Let me tell you. I've never been more satisfied professionally. We left the race abruptly. And the reason why we did is that I became convinced, that in one way or another, to go forward I would have to tell people things that I didn't think were true." The party was thrown to celebrate and thank Ohioans for their work they did on his failed presidential bid. "I asked for this to be done so I could have an opportunity to thank you all for your work," Kasich told the crowd. "I can't thank you enough for everything you've done." • 8. Self Evaluation Essay The greatest start to the best speech is a good topic. The topic needs to be modern, up to date, interesting and fun. All of this is depending on your audience as well, so you wouldn't want to give a speech on the first phones invented to fifth graders. The topic should appeal to the audience, and since most of my speeches will be done in my communication class my audience will be current college students just like myself. This makes it a little easier preparing a speech because I am a college student as well, so I have a bit of an idea of what may or may not appeal to my audience. There are many things that I need to consider before giving a speech, things like, how to be fully prepared with my information, how to not bore my audience to death, ... So I need to make sure during my speech to make it interesting and bring a visual aide because I know that, that may help me share my information better with students who learn better with visual aids as well as I do. As stated in our Frealeigh and Tuman textbook "If you want audience members to actively listen to your speech and ignore everything else going on you must motivate them to focus on what you're saying. By selection supporting materials that appeal to your listeners interest, you sweeten the odds that they will pay attention to you." So with this I feel that by getting something that most of my classmates or audience can connect with, will make them feel the need to pay attention to what I'm saying and actually have their full attention the entire time. I feel like also learning what my classmate's interests are may help me grab and keep their attention longer. Learning how to connect my topic to things they may like, for instance sports, famous people, or politics may help me peek their interest and keep their mind on me and what I am saying rather than looking around or look at their ... The spiral of silence theory by Elisabeth Noelle–Neumann explains why certain people fall under the pressure and seclude to silence. Silence may not always be a bad thing, but according to a study by Lucy J. MacGregor, the fact is that silence during a speech or conversation is absolutely bad. With this, silence while talking to a large group negatively affects the listeners in a way in which some words in the speech will not be remembered. The point is that silence tends to destroy people's speeches. Words are forgotten in the speech; Loss of the attention by the listeners happens and the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In every high school, there are the jocks, the band, the nerds, the people on drugs, the religious and so on and so forth. Some of these groups were known as the popular group and some were known as the creeps. These names that are given to the groups still happen in everyday life when you are older and this also affects whether or not the person will speak up about a certain topic. When certain groups have to keep secrets from other groups for safety reasons, this does not help the silence situation at all. The fact that groups are keeping secrets from others means that they do not trust anyone else which forces groups into silence and they cannot voice their opinion anymore. The Spiral of Silence has a key voice in the workplace, which involves the use of presentations. One thing affected by the listener not wanting to support the speaker is the fact of whether or not the listener is actually paying attention (Denham–Vaughan 7). It has been said that listeners are more than likely to lose their attention when there is a break in the speech by the speaker. When this happens, the listener is more than likely going to jumble up sentences together and guess the wrong word to finish the current statement that the speaker broke the pause with. This happens because the train of thought is said to be interrupted and lose focus on the certain topic. Viewing the eyes and seeing the horizontal and vertical movement ... Music may be something we listen to in the car, but songs can be used to portray many different factors in a film. Music can hint the viewer as to what the mood of characters may be, the setting of a given place, or even the time frame in which the movie took place. Music helps the director steer their movie in one way or another, depending on their choice of music. The movie Almost Famous featured portions of 68 different songs performed by various artists throughout the 60's and early 70's. For a movie that revolves around music it comes to no surprise that in the very first minutes of the movie playing a song is already playing. The song played is The Chipmunk Song by The Chipmunks. Now when you look at the screen, you'd find yourself a bit confused as to why Christmas music is playing during what appears to be summer time. • 26. JFK Speech Comparison Essay Speeches are one of the most useful tools possible when addressing a group of people, be it a large crowd or small gathering. Through a speech, the lector can successfully express a variety of emotions and even toy with the listeners' emotions, through their specific choice of words or tone of voice. The way a speech is delivered can make people feel any range of emotions from determined and hopeful, to outraged and vengeful. The use of a written speech, gives the lector time to think over their words and analyze what will best help them get their point across through different word variations or even sentence structures. Continuously throughout his speech, King refers to the movement for freedom as a beacon of light. It is something the people of America should follow as it promises hope for the future. Also, King compares the racial injustices to burning fire by saying "seared in the flames of withering injustice". The use of powerful words such as "seared" and "flames" really stand out to the listeners and gives them a sense of pain and despair, helping them to see the wrongdoings of the people who allowed these injustices. King goes on to say "the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty.." giving listeners a sense that African Americans were cast into this imprisonment of injustice, not through their own faults, but through the oppression of others. While King uses metaphors to bring the people to sympathize and empathize with the African Americans, Kennedy employs the use of metaphors to create a sense unity and duty. Kennedy's metaphor when he says "the torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans..." references the Olympics, symbolizing the passing on of responsibilities and duties that Americans owed to the country. Furthermore, Kennedy then later uses the metaphors "jungle of suspicion" and "chains of poverty" to get people listening to think of these things as a common goal to fight and defeat, further establishing a sense of purpose in his mission. The use of metaphors allowed both King and Kennedy to connect their message with a concrete image or emotion, to better connect with those ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 27. The Elements Of A Great Speech By Martin Luther King Jr. Life is always easier when there is a way to find the answer. A cake is easier to bake with a recipe to follow, and a great speech needs a formula or list of aspects to include. Good morning Mrs Roche and students. For my presentation today I will explore a formula I have created that contains all the elements of a great speech. I produced this formula while I was studying some of the work of one of the best speakers and leaders of all time: Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr was an American Baptist Minister, Activist, Humanitarian, and leader in the African American Civil Rights Movement. He was known for his amazing speaking skills and visionary speeches, which he used to successfully make a non–violent movement against segregation and injustice during his time. He was a great speaker and a great leader. So what better of a leader than Martin Luther King Jr to help identify what key aspects need to be put into the formula. ... In his eulogy for the death of three girls killed in the bombing of their church he used the words : "These children – unoffending, innocent and beautiful – were victims of one of the most vicious and tragic crimes ever perpetuated against humanity", this language both pays respect towards the girls but also links back to his fight against injustice and this is exactly what the listeners will respond to. They will be grateful to his kind words but will agree with him that it wasn't fair for the girls to die so innocent and young, and that they want this to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Throughout high school, my grades were never above average and until about a couple of years ago I considered myself to be unintelligent. What I failed to see was my level of commitment. Once I began applying myself, the grades earned reflected that. This concept coincides to my public speaking ability. Looking at my personal anecdote speech I think that was my shining moment. I am not only saying that because of the grade I received, but because I owned the material and it showed. • 29. A Streetcar Named Desire By Susan Glaspell In any great story, one can find a unique trait that sets it apart from all others. Susan Glaspell 's Trifles would be incomplete if not for the lonely farmhouse. Romeo and Juliet is nothing if not a tragedy about star–crossed lovers. The tales that we now know as classics received that label because something about them was just too great to ignore. Although many dramas and stories often find strengths in their story or setting, A Streetcar Named Desire demonstrates the significance of powerful characters. Specifically, Blanche DuBois is arguably the most essential character to the plot. Raised on a plantation among the wealthy, she is a ringing example of sophistication and femininity. The way she speaks and acts portray this, as her words are more often than not poetic in nature and almost too flawless. She 's also able to use her words to manipulate others, especially when it comes to dodging questions about her mysterious past. All in all, Blanche is a truly well crafted character because of how unique and unalike she is to any of the other characters in A Streetcar Named Desire, and most of it can be attributed to her distinctive voice. Blanche 's character is, as a whole, excessively poetic and complicated in the way she talks. Her pattern of speech serves to reflect her comfortable upbringing and status as a more refined and elite citizen when compared to the other characters of the play. Specifically, when speaking to Mitch, Blanche uses poetic speech to make ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Through evolution and changing social times, modern society has begun to question the literary works of famous poets such as William Shakespeare, for his use of predominantly male representation, overused themes, and debased comedy style. Nevertheless, although social progress is underway to broaden the range of literary works studied, it is important to examine Shakespeare in order to recognize his exclusive influence on the English language, depiction of universal characters, and representation of transferable lessons. In classrooms students learn of the devices he imposed onto the English language "He invented over 1700 of our common words by changing nouns into verbs, changing verbs into adjectives, connecting words by changing nouns into verb..." As hyperbolic as it sounds, being able to use and manipulate the English language properly into our writing and speaking can be very influential in advocating ideas towards a community. "As a speaker, you have some influence on the extent to which others see you as having authority" (Fontaine and Smith 13). To gain authority over an audience, one must write and speak with confidence and be skilled enough to use proper English: that is, following the standard rules of grammar and incorporating complex sentences and a wide range of vocabulary. In addition, the manipulation of the English language in writing and speaking, with the use of figurative language and compositional techniques, makes the writing more persuasive. Speaking properly and effectively will change the way we talk and will change the way people will listen to us. By displaying knowledge and skill towards the widely accepted language, we make our speaking and writing more impactful, gaining authority over our audience. It was through my past experience that I came to a realization that impactful speaking and writing, possible through the use of proper English, serve as an agent for grasping my audience's attention. Obviously Hamlet is horribly depressed. We have already seen several examples of this, but this speech gives us a clear picture of his sadness. More importantly however, his speech shows his weakness and indecisiveness. Hamlet is consistently melancholy, but he never really acts on it; he just kind of wallows around, full of self–pity and loathing. Finally, it gives us Hamlet's reason for not committing suicide. Hamlet says in this speech, in as plain of language as he can, that he is depressed and wants to die. But, he has said that before. This speech gives us our first clear indication as to his reason for craving death. More interestingly, Hamlet shows here his fundamental cowardice and fear. He has been going on for the whole play about how terrible his life is and how much pain and suffering he has had to endure, and he starts out the speech on this note. This is the first indication of his weakness. Hamlet it seems would rather bemoan his troubles than solve them. He goes on and on about his crappy life but rarely, if ever, even tries to do anything about it. Even in his desire for death he will speak but not act. He has wished for ceath at least ten times during the play, but when it comes right down to it Hamlet is to scared to act on his desire. He doesn't decide against suicide because of some noble realization (that life is far to precious to be wasted for example), he is just too scared of the afterlife. My three reasons why include not recreating the past, a protest between blacks and whites, and nevertheless, another civil war. To begin with, one of my reasons why I say that we should tear down the monuments is not to recreate the past. For instance, in Charlottesville over the past weekend, there was a protest between a group of KKK, neo Nazi, and white supremacists fighting and chanting "you will not replace us." He was doing this, as he could not live with himself if he did not do his best to defend Tom Robinson despite the chances of winning the court case. The use of emotive language and well–reasoned arguments makes the case more persuasive and plausible.
