3. Preliminary Task Progressionâ Evidence
Front Cover
Step-by-stepStep 1
To start off with, I had a blank page with
the colours maroon and blue at the top
and bottom to represent the school
colours. I chose these colours to be my
colour scheme as I was creating the
school magazine and these colours are
basic and effective to use.
I went on a website called âDafontâ
to choose the font for my
masthead. I went with the font
called âcollegeâ. I thought this font
went nicely with the theme of
college and school as its very bold
and eye-catching. Following on
from this, I added 2 small images of
the St Paul's logo so it made it
obvious to readers that the
magazine was about St Pauls.
Once I was happy with the font I chose
which was âcollegeâ I then went on to
add the strap line âsuccess, fashion and
funâ which Is effective as it wont bore
the readers as its not all about school
work it has some elements of fun
within the magazine. Following on
from this, I added the popular social
networking logos, Facebook and
twitter and also a barcode, the website
address and the date and issue.

4. Preliminary Task Progressionâ Evidence
Front Cover
Step-by-stepStep 4
After the previous conventions I
placed on my school magazine, I took
lots of images of my friend Toni. I
made sure she looked happy, friendly
and positive so that the pass-along
audience would be attracted to buy
the magazine. Following on from this,
I also had Toni look straight at the
camera this is so that my pass-along
audience would also get a personal
feel to the magazine.
Step 5
After step 4, I added
the puff promotion and
the cheap price label
significantly to attract
the pass along
audience.
Step 6
Lastly, this was the end of my front
cover. I added the appropriate cover
lines to give the reader a clear insight
of the content of the magazine.
6. Step 1
Preliminary Task Progressionâ Evidence
Contents Page
Step-by-step
Step 2 Step 3
The same as my front cover,
I initially started off with a
blank page and the maroon
strips along the bottom and
the tops of the page.
Step 2, I started to add the appropriate conventions of a
typical contents page. As you can see on the top of the
page I added the âcontentsâ, âissue 1â the St Paul's logo
and the ârepeatedâ (Steve Nealeâ) the magazines names
from my front cover. Following on from this, I wrote up
my editorial on word so I could check for spelling and
grammar mistakes. Once I had done this I added it on to
my contents page and used the âpen toolâ to incorporate
it neatly in.
As you can see, for step 3 I
added the features (cover lines)
along side the page number
where you could find the story
within the magazine

Step-by-step
Step 4 Step 5
For step 4, I added 3 thumbnail images of the cover lines
so the readers could get a quick insight of what the
stories would contain. This made my page look more
appealing to the set target audience.
Step 5 was the last stage of designing my contents page.
I added the web address to the bottom of the page
alongside the social media links.

11. Publisher Research
⢠From my research on âClash magazineâ the
information I have gathered is that the
readership of âClashâ is 188,940, following on
fro this the circulation is 47,235. Surprisingly,
the approximate gender split is on a 50/50
basis and the average age readers is 71% 21-
31 which is a similar age group that I want my
magazine to be for.
12. Target Audience:
The target audience for âClash magazineâ can be detonated/clarified for both the female and male audiences between
the ages of 18-35 which are described as the âdownload generationâ. âClash magazineâ target this expanded age range of
readers by alternating between modern bands such as âThe 1975â, âColdplayâ and âOasisâ to artist and bands such as âJay
Zâ âKanye Westâ and the âBeastlie Boysâ. Following on from this, âClash Magazineâ also attract the people who are
interested in fashion and film as the feature this in their magazine. âClash magazineâ press pack states that 37% of their
readership is between the ages of 37% of their readership is between the ages of 21-25 and other 34% states that the
target ages are from the ages 26 to 30. Furthermore clashâs press pack represents that 52% of their readership Is actually
male. Thus concluding that the target audience is men aged between 21 and 30.
The target audience are mainly males and this is because they write about the kind of music that the males of these
particular age ranges will be interested in, therefore they can personally identify with themselves with the articles (Katz).
As âClashâ have such wide age ranges of readers, this connotes the they have they ability to appeal to a lot of people as
the also feature fashion and film. Social climbers (Maslowâs) are the most likely to read this magazine as it is about music
artists and celebrities, therefore these people will want to be just like the people in the magazine because of the lives
that they have. In addition to this, social climbers will want to read this magazine because they feel as it they are being
forced to improve to improve their status within society. To conclude, I think that audience of Q magazine fit into the âBâ
âC1â category of the socio-economic needs, which means that Q magazine are able to make their magazine more
expensive as people in these groups will be able to afford the magazine.
What is the USP of this magazine?
From the research completed into this media product, I think the USP is mainly the pictures which relate to the
stories in the magazine. They are an effective USP because they help the readers visualize and picture the
stories better and more interested in the story. Following on from this another USP is the fact that âClash
magazineâ also feature a fashion and film section. This then attracts a wider audience which âClash magazineâ
will make more profit on the magazine and also there is an alternating variety of bands and artist which allows
âClash magazineâ to elongate their ages in their target audience. Lastly, a final USP of âClashâ is the main articles
that are featured because they can have exclusive interviews which no other existing magazine has so this will
attract the reader more to buy âClashâ more as pass along audiences are very much attracted to âexclusiveâ
features as they know that they are not going to read that in any other magazine.

14. Target Audience:
The target audience for âNME magazineâ can be denoted as again, similar to âClash magazineâ a largely male dominated
audience starting from the age 16-30 which again, like âClashâ is a rather expanded age range. From doing statistic
research, it shows that 73% of âNMEâSâ readers are exactly males and only a tiny 27% of their readers are actually
females which surprised me. NME mainly try to attract the male audiences and they do this by trying to add a basic
masculine effect to the magazine by putting male artists in their articles like âJake Buggâ which is the front cover I have
chosen to annotate. The target audience for âNMEâ can personally identify (Katz) themselves with the articles with the
issues of the magazine as they are interested in the specific genre of music of each âNMEâ issue, therefore this means
that they can relate and personally identify themslesbs with each other and let each artist inspire them. Following on
from this, the audience of âNMEâ are social climbers (Maslow) because the magazine has articles on a variety of
successful celebrities which is an inspiration to readers. A large percentage of people want to raise their status with
society so that they can end up like their favorite celebrity, therefore this classifies them as social climbers. To conclude,
I personally feel the target audience of this magazine can be denoted as the c1-c2 category of the social economic
needs table as the magazine is not formal itâs a casual light read and is inexpensive.
What is the USP of this magazine?
From the research completed into this media product, I think the USP is the unique masthead as its very bright and
bold. And the pass along reader immediately see it which makes it the main focus for the reader as its what they see
straight away. Following on from this, the cover lines are very interesting and intriguing for the reader because the
artists and bands are specifically targeted at the genre of the music magazine. Then consumer will automatically be
interested and want to read the magazine as its been aimed at that particular target audience.
