1. A deadly obsession…
ave you ever thought about the consequences of being
extremely obsessed? In this 18th century novel called “The
Perfume” written by Patrick Süskind, a boy called Grenouille
H
committed several murders to make the perfect perfume. After he
unintentionally suffocated a woman, he realized that he needed to
recreate the girl’s scent. Therefore, with just this goal in his mind he was
awfully obsessed and capable of doing anything to make the ideal
perfume.
After committing
several crimes, all the
people that
surrounded him got
into panic, but
Grenouille did not
care about it. He was
focused just upon
reaching his goal which was to create the perfect perfume without
minding that people around him were suffering because of his actions.
Eventually, when Grenouille went for his 24th victim, the Marquis of
Grasse, a location near Paris, realized that the next victim could be his
daughter Laure –and he was right- whose beauty was the most
gorgeous of the city. He fled with Laure far away from their secluded

A MURDERER:
It is a literary cross-genre novel,
which was originally written in
German by Patrick Süskind as Das
Parfum, and published in 1985.
Going deeper into the story, you
will get caught up in the sense of
smell that this story has, and its
emotional feeling that the idea of
identity and morality of the
human spirit may carry…
Let you get hooked on the story
of a French perfume apprentice,
who begins to murder women in
order to get the “perfect scent”.

sense of smell, he could find them easily.
Why was Grenouille wasted
away by such an obsession?
He was not born with his own body scent…
espite of the overwhelming power that Grenouille had to
dominate the whole world if he wanted to, he was never
able to love someone else like any ordinary human in this
D
world –but he was an exceptional man- because he lacked the main
human feature: the scent. It should be noted that even with the
power given by his unique perfume, he could not reach the
happiness. This is one of the biggest morals that this novel leaves the
reader and the reason why you should read it!
People who have already read this novel have claimed that getting
obsessed implies knowing when your actions could hinder not only
someone’s well- being, but also yours. The dramatically ending of this
novel was Grenouille’s death, because he was devoured by the
crowd. People felt bewitched by the scent of the perfume, which
made them think that Grenouille was as an angel.
In the end, Grenouille was the best demonstration of somebody who
is not aware of his or her actions. This character represents the
boundless ambition. As he had never grown up with the support of his
family – because he was abandoned by his mother when he was
born- he never knew what love and morality mean.
A perfect novel for those who want to get captivated by such
narrative which makes the story something unpredictable.
