Banning Bump-Stocks
Recently in the news, a proposal to ban devices which alter semiautomatic guns to make them
behave like a fully automatic firearm have been presented in Congress. The legislation, according to
supporters, could reduce the likelihood of massacres. Paul Ryan, Speaker of the House, claimed to
be open minded about the ban of "bump–stock" accessories which enables semi–automatic weapons
to fire hundreds of rounds in a minute. Additionally, California Senator Dianne Feinstein introduced
a companion bill to ban bump stocks and a Florida Republican, Representative Carlos Curbelo,
plans to establish a ban regarding bump stocks as well. Although many authority figures are taking
action after the Las Vegas shooting in order to put forth more effective

California State Budget
The state of California along with many other states has gone through periods of recessions. The
major difference between California and other states is the difference how California manages the
state budget. The California governor creates a budget and is sent to the Department of Finance. The
Department then modifies the budget according to the likings of the governor. The governor can
have a deficit but must fit the deficit into next years budget. A deficit refers to a shortage of funds
and can create problems when creating the state budget. If there is a surplus (abundant amount of
revenue) in the budget then the governor has the power to create programs that are politically
advantageous. During times of financial crisis the process of ... Show more content on

During Governor Pete Wilson term in the 1990s his main goal was to eliminate the huge budget gap.
Many of the changes that were done in the budget involved taxes and expenditures. During this
period of time, although there was not a complete unified of government, most democrats and
republicans were able to negotiate with each other and were able to have majority vote to raise taxes
and its deficit rules were also unclear at the time. Both situations are similar despite time
differences. Similarities include a strong unified government, and weak anti–deficit rules. Governor
Pete Wilson was able to have both parties agree to cut back on programs and increase revenue by
increasing taxes. The only difference that can occur and has occurred is the response from the
citizens. During the 1990s investments in technology came out successful therefore having more
people paying more taxes. If the citizens today were to be given a vote to increase taxes, most would
not agree. This is because the state of the economy reflects largely on how California becomes
affected. During Wilson's term, technology was a new concept and there were many successful
investments that increased many citizens income. Both situations are similar and can become a
valuable lesson to learn

Gun Control Controls Nothing Essays
More and more frequently, we are saddened by the news of mass shootings. Whether it takes place
in a school or public area, these shootings are both disastrous and mortifying. Families begin to feel
anger and sadness, and demand immediate justice. Although these terrible events continue to
happen, there have been no significant steps taken towards the reduction in the number of weapons;
specifically assault rifles. This leads one to question do we need to ban the right to possess such
weapons? If the possession of these weapons is not made illegal, we run the risk of another attack.
While there is no questioning the severity of these mass shootings, a ban on assault rifles is not the
answer because they are not the cause of such events, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The bill definitely has good intentions, but the fact of the matter is that these shootings are
anomalies. Since 2006, there have only been six cases in which ten or more people were killed in a
given shooting (USA Today). Therefore, these are not common events. At less than once per year for
the last seven years, it is something that might even go unnoticed had there not been a great deal of
news coverage following such events. To add to that, out of the 231 mass killings in the United
States in the last seven years, only a mere thirty–two of these cases have been due to guns (USA
Today). This means that there are many more important issues than assault rifles when it comes to
the prevention of mass shootings. One of the main issues with mass shootings is not the guns but the
people who wield the guns. In the United States, less than six percent of people are considered to
have "serious" mental disorders (National Institute of Mental Health). Less than one percent of that
number would even be at the risk of committing as catastrophic a crime as a mass shooting. This is
the type of person who would do such a thing. Again, this is not common at all. We are talking about
a handful of people in the whole country, yet news coverage and popular opinion makes it out to be
a common event. Seung–Hui Cho, the Virginia Tech Massacre killer who murdered 32 people on

Dunce Cap Research Paper
No Dunce cap.
This morning again, they were back as expected. They always are. The dramatic, offensive, finger
pointing, denigrating news headlines were back to mortify, harrow, humiliate and shame some poor
souls made to fess up after they messed up. Surely, these people should wear a dunce cap. Yahoo

I hope they have a dunce cap wide enough for that one!
What I did not expect, however, was to find similar judgmental language in the jargon–oxygenated

Essay On Surveillance
Justice is dead, extinct, eradicated by those who seek monetary gain as opposed to altruism. Why
would you give the people what they need as well as desire, when instead you could line your own
pockets with capital from corrupt billionaires and businesses? Society has surpassed the point of
complete saturation with these injustices, and now we are on the brink of a catastrophic dystopian
meltdown. With politicians drafting bills to monitor and control the public, government agencies
sidestepping the law in a misguided attempt to achieve justice, and a dishonest mainstream media
trying to sway the public view every step of the way, it is quite a wonder we have lasted this long.

The Year of the Woman Essay
The Year of the Woman
Reporters portray female and male candidates differently when covering campaigns for political
office. In order to counteract the biased coverage in the papers the women of the 1992 Senate race
used 30–second advertising spots to assert their key issue stances and strengths. Though this was not
the sole purpose of their ads, they were very much geared toward compensating for the lack of fair
coverage they were receiving in the news. Ultimately they persevered. Through verbal and
nonverbal content, as defined by Lynda Lee Kaid, women designed their ads to portray a high level
of competence. 1992 is widely known as 'The Year of the Woman,' when 5 women won Senate seats
and 24 new women were elected to the House. "All ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Personal frames written by journalists in the 1992 campaign were analyzed by John Devit and
supported the claim that the coverage of female candidates was biased. The sources in his analysis
were more likely to use personal frames in describing female candidates than in describing male
candidates (Appendix 1).
Newspapers cover women inadequately and personally. In an Arizona Republic news article about
Governor Jane Hull the journalist describes her as, "A grandmotherly red head dressed in a sensible
suit climbs out of the back seat and strolls to the hotel...if anyone in the lobby recognizes Gov. Jane
Hull...they don't let on." The Rocky Mountain News is another example of journalists guilty of the
bias. In a news article covering another gubernatorial race the writer describes one candidate, Gail
Schoeletter, as "showing up at glitzy campaign to–dos in a dusty 1993 Toyota with cans of apricot
nectar and granola bars sliding around on the floor boards." These two newspapers are only a
sample of the type of coverage women are subjected to during their political campaigns. Their issues
are rarely covered and instead their personal habits and clothing style are commented on as the topic
of choice

Essay about America Needs Gun Control
When looking at all of the important issues of today's society, one of the most neglected issues
revolves around guns. Guns serve two different purposes: to defend and to kill. Even though I've
been on this Earth for only 21 years, I've become keen and have taken an interest in the study of
guns and how they pose more problems in society than any other issue. My interest all started
around the time of the Columbine shooting in Colorado and how society has taken steps since that
point in history. Going back to the two different purposes, both have been used to help explain the
differences in the distinctions of different gun related events that continue to occur, such as mass
shootings. Problem analysis, as stated, will help to explain how ... Show more content on

"Find a way to measure the problem that is consistent with the way it's defined" (Kraft, Furlong
161). Going back to the first step: the definition of the problem is that individuals with mental issues
and individuals with violent criminal records, due to the lack of regulation, are exposed to accessing
too many guns. As far as individuals with violent criminal records and individuals with mental
disorders, they shouldn't be allowed access to guns. As per the National Conference of State
Legislatures, there are restrictions against those who have mental issues and recent criminal records
(Possession... NCSL). The National Conference of State Legislatures, NCSL, gathers the states
together to help remain independent and fight against any wrongdoing that stems from Congress.
The NCSL also allows the states to determine their rulings over certain issues (Possession... NCSL).
Lack of regulation, in this case, would be the overabundance of guns that an individual can access
on a month–to–month basis. "Approximately 2,221,000 of those convicted each year committed
violent crimes and approximately 1,121,000 used guns" (Mountjoy). What does this statistic tell us?
Although this statistic is used for petty gun crimes, who's to say this wouldn't happen in the case of
mass shootings? Does any other collected data help to support the claim that certain people shouldn't
be allowed access to guns? The Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence recently came out with data

The Assassination of the Mayor of Castro Street Essay
The Assassination of the Mayor of Castro Street and the Consensus of the Judicial System
It was November 27th, 1978. There was a cheerful atmosphere in San Francisco's City Hall that
morning. Supervisor Harvey Milk's good mood was due to Mayor George Moscone's upcoming
announcement to the press. He was going to publicize that he had decided not to reappoint the ultra–
conservative "voice for the family", Dan White, back to the board of supervisors. Harvey Milk was a
fierce advocate of this political move, for he was the first openly gay elected official, and thus, the
most important political leader for homosexuals at the time. Dan White, on the other hand, enforced
family values and therefore was not someone that supported this ... Show more content on

He snuck through a window in City Hall just before the press conference was scheduled to take
place, and swiftly shot and killed both men in their own offices. He confessed to the assassinations
just hours later at the local police station.
Despite the evidence of premeditation, the obvious animosity between the assassin and the victims,
and the immediate confession, Dan White was only convicted of two counts of voluntary
manslaughter. He served five years in prison for his crime. In the context of the assassination of two
government officials, the jury's conviction is almost inconsequential. To fully understand the
implication of the term "voluntary manslaughter" it is necessary to distinguish the different
classifications of murder as defined by California State law. The definition of murder constitutes
both deliberation and premeditation, while voluntary manslaughter is defined as the killing of
another human spontaneously with the lack of previous planning. After staying up all night, Dan
White called his secretary and asked for a ride to City Hall, having no purpose to be in the building,
due to the fact that he was no longer employed there. He brought with him his gun, and because he
brought ten extra bullets as well he clearly had the intention of firing it. He had contemplated how to
avoid the metal detectors at the main entrance and

Essay on The Dangers Posed by Public Use of Assault Weapons
Assault weapon control is becoming an unavoidable topic in the United States. According to the
Federal Bureau of Investigation more than nine hundred people have died from mass shootings in
the past seven years and an assault rifle was used in twelve of the forty–three mass shootings in the
past four years. The U.S. Department of Defense has long defined assault rifles as fully automatic
rifles used for military purposes. The National Firearm Act of 1934 prohibited fully automatic
weapons in the United States. The 1994 Assault Weapon Ban prohibited semi and fully automatic
weapons and any weapon with military style characteristics. California Senator, Dianne Feinstein, is

While there are many assault rifles the highest manufactured and purchased in the U.S. is the AR–
15. The AR–15 is a type of semi–automatic weapon that can hold up to 100 rounds and can shoot up
to 50 rounds per minute. The U.S. is the highest manufacturer and consumer of these rifles, but
similar types are made throughout the world. This weapon is said to be used for hunting coyote or
other vermin. However, this weapon was used in the December 14, 2012 mass murder at Sandy
Hook Elementary School in Newton, Connecticut and in the July 20, 2012 Century movie theatre
mass shooting in Aurora, Colorado. These incidences compelled a need for a government response
to better control these dangerous weapons. In a 2012 Washington post article by Brad Plumer he
looks at what the 1994 law actually did, where it failed, and whether it could be reworked to reduce
gun violence. He cited the complexity regarding the definition of an "Assault Weapon." Since
congress did not want to ban all semiautomatic weapons, and there lack of a clear technical
definition made the ban more complex and easy to find loop holes. He also states that it was illegal
to manufacture assault weapons and high–capacity magazines, there was an exemption to any
weapon or magazine that was manufactured before the law was in effect. There was already more
than 24 million large capacity magazines available before the ban was in effect so it was easy to
obtain a weapon of this

Persuasive Essay On Gun Control
There has been much controversy about the issue of gun controls. Many different laws about gun
control have been put in place. While some argue that there are too many gun restricting laws, others
people say otherwise. Due to the increase of deaths each year because of guns, some of the laws
associated with gun ownership that have been removed, need to be reexamined . One law that has
been revoked is the Dianne Feinstein law. In the video, " The Rachel Maddow Show " by Rachel
Maddow, it states, " It was in reaction to that massacre at 101 California that then Senator Dianne
Feinstein led the national fight for an assault weapons ban in 1994. And at the time, nobody said it
would pass. But it did pass and it was in effect for 10 years, while the Constitution survived and
everything. President George W. Bush and the Republican–controlled Congress let that law expire
10 years later in 2004" ( Maddow). To explain furthermore why this law shouldn't have been
revoked, " And because they let it expire, that is why the mother of the Sandy Hook Elementary
School shooter was able to buy legally and easily the Bushmaster AR–15 assault rifle that the Sandy
Hook gunman used to fire all but one of 152 bullets that he fired in the space of less than five

The United States and Assault Rifles Essay
The United States of America was founded on laws to stop a single person from ruling the country.
These laws were later known as the Bill of Rights, which lists every living person's rights. On this
Bill of Rights is what is know as the Second Amendment which gives United States citizens the
right to bear arms. Over the years this amendment has been questioned by the government on how it
affects the safety of citizens. Safety is important and the new high–capacity magazines could be a
true threat to America's safety. As big of a threat as they may seem, assault rifles are not the first
major weapon to wreak havoc on the citizens of the United States. If we take a time machine back in

This design lead to greater and more powerful weapons to be used in the First and Second World
War. The weapons used in the World Wars were by far the most advanced of their time. The new
weapons produced three times the amount of firepower either sides of the Civil War could produce
at any given time. These weapons were feared by the citizens of the time. These new weapons
consisted of the Thompson, a submachine gun, which fired a .45 caliber bullet at high velocities.
This rifle became the standard fully automatic rifle for the United States Armed Forces. Though this
weapon had a very important role in winning the war, it was also used in various crimes throughout
the United States in the early nineteenth century. Does this make this rifle a bad thing to own? While
some would argue that the weapon was a threat to the public's safety, and while the others would say
it was not, it still fired at a high velocity which makes the possibility of multiple deaths more
possible. This caused a large concern to erupt among the public in large cities where mobs were
becoming popular. It was obvious that these new found guns would be great for protecting the
public, however, it would also come to harm them since they were falling into the hands of
criminals. These weapons would never stop evolving with years to come weapons would become
more deadly and even more common than the thompson would ever be.

The Nuclear Of The Iran Nuclear Deal
When comparing the four articles we had found, we noticed that though they are presenting the
same information of the Iran nuclear deal, but they seem to tell it in separate ways. The articles
come from two American papers (one Liberal, Washington Post, and one Conservative, Washington
Times), a British newspaper (The Guardian), and an Iranian paper (the Tehran Times). In the sense
of discussing the big facts of the story itself, all four papers refer to the deal as either "historic" or
"landmark," which could be considered a neutral stance since it could mean either the good or bad
connotations of the words. All four also discuss Israel's concerns, though some emphasize it more
than others. Mention of President Obama's plan to veto any legislation that is created to overturn the
deal is also in all four. Also discussed are the Iranian centrifuges, if only just mentioned, they are
stated in all papers. Another trait that the articles have in common is that their sources seem to be
press releases and direct quotes about the deal. From that simplification alone, they may seem
similar, but there are some huge differences when it comes to the framing of this story. Regarding
Israel's concerns, each paper has taken a different approach to addressing it. In the Washington
Times, they tell about the concerns of Israel's in the title of the article, using "alarm in Israel" in
there, which leads one to think that they may be trying to get at our "pro–Israel" sentiment,

(Congressional Research Service, 2013) This bill is a severe attack on our second amendment rights.
It is over the top and does not focus on the real problems at hand. These problems at hand are mental

future. What we have here is uneducated, ignorant members of congress trying to make laws that

Essay on Gun Control Rights
One of many controversial topics in the United States is gun control. It is clearly written in the
Second Amendment of the Constitution that the people will have the right to bear arms. Recently;
however, people have been misusing those firearms and have been harming others with them. The
government is trying to regulate the sale, distribution, and ownership of guns because of this reason.
Some of the arguments being made by the politicians is simply if the government has the right to be
able to control, and if it does, the effectiveness of the public policy to regulate guns. The importance
of gun control as a health issue is a necessity. "Each year, the United States has a bit over 8,000
murders with firearms" (Wilblin 1) "The US ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It also prohibits the ammunition feeding devices for these semiautomatic weapons. (Fienstein 1).
With this being said, the FAWB is an act that supports gun control instead of bearing arms. The
Second Amendment of the United States Constitution reads: "A well regulated Militia, being
necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be
infringed." The constitution is clearly saying all citizens have the right to be able to own and carry a
weapon or firearm. On June 26, 2008, in District of Columbia v. Heller, the United States Supreme
Court held in a 5–4 decision that the Second Amendment protects an individual's right to possess a
firearm for traditionally lawful purposes, such as self–defense within the home and within federal
enclaves (Cornell 1). This is showing how our founding fathers supported the right to bear arms.
Ownership of certain weapons should be prohibited. Assault rifles and submachine guns are firearms
that are never necessary. The United States should set a goal to having fewer high–power weapons
available. However, the only situation to these firearms being more acceptable to use than others, are
the warlike scenarios. The thought of submachine guns and assault rifles being necessary is
sickening. What would be the purpose of owning an assault rifle or submachine guns? Gun–bearers

Argument Against Gun Control
The history of mankind has been predominantly influenced by the use of the various purposes of the
manmade tool. From one's first feeble steps as an infant one uses the sturdy aid of a table or chair to
support oneself. As he progresses in age, one will use a variety of tools to aid and at times protect
oneself from the many external factors that will plague one. In each civilization, from the Ancient
World's catapults and clubs to the nuclear and machine weapons that predominated the World Wars,
history has been forged in the bloodshed of men, women, and children akin. From war to immediate
survival humans have been dependent upon the use of these weapons, such as guns, to maintain
order within their respective societies; but, after tragedies ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Two of the primary answers came from Senator Dianne Feinstein's "Assault Weapons Ban of 2013"

2013 Senator Dianne Feinstein sponsored the bill "S–150: Assault Weapons Ban of 2013," which

and the individual possession of assault weapons.8 On March 21, 2013, Senate Henry Reid

Gun Control Issue
The United States has become a country that no longer stands united. In todays society it is a
prevalent issue that the country is divided on many major issues. The last election shows the strong
division biased upon just political reasons. One of the major issues that is being discovered with this
issue is what actions should be taken towards gun control. Some officials suggest that the country
bans guns entirely and others believe that the issue should not even be looked at. Essentially the
debate comes down to the issues between gun rights and gun control. Gun control is an extreme that
should be used as a last resort. A complete and total ban on guns is not an option, due to the revolt
that would ensue. The U.S. has become a gun culture ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are many people in capitol hill who are actively voicing their opinion on why gun control is
the only issue. Senator Dianne Feinstein went live on a T.V. interview with Wolf Blitzer. In the
interview they address the issue head on where Senator Feinstein addressed a bill that she is trying
to pass through congress right now that would affectively outlaw 185 different guns and places
limitations on thousands more. (Interview with Senator) Passing a bill like this might ban automatic
weapons, but those are not the issue. The weapons that need to be limited are handguns. They are
the ones that are being used the most in violent crimes, and are also the easiest to obtain. Later on
Wolf Blitzer comments about how the senator has made some enemies in the senate by trying to
push something as drastic as this. She would reply with a comment about how the NRA is lobbying
for members of congress and are buying them out to vote against bills to create gun control.
Personally this might be happening, but the issue with it is that the majority of citizens do not want
firearms to be banned due to things like the second amendment. They guarantee the rights to own
one, and restricting those who can obtain them would be less of an infringement of a person's rights.
By raising the requirements to obtain a firearm it restricts those

These days it seems that every day there is a mass shooting. Gun laws allow people who should not
have access to any type of weapon at all, to legally purchase guns. Gun restrictions need to be
stricter and there need to be fewer weapon products available to civilians.
Gun restrictions are not strict enough and are not doing anything. In fact, "The man who killed more
than 20 people at a small Texas church escaped from a mental health facility five years ago after
sneaking guns onto an Air Force base and making threats against commanders, according to a police

The Assault Rifle Ban
If the government would take a more rapid pace in a full assault weapon ban, then the murder rate in
the country would drop dramatically. The U.S. has one of the highest murder rates for developed
countries such as Japan who has a murder rate of 0.4 per 100,000 people and Britain with a 1.2 per
100,000 people. The U.S. has a murder rate of 4.7 per 100,000 people and it is not getting any better.
A ban on assault rifles would have a positive effect on the murder rate. Assault rifles are known to
be the most dangerous firearm in the world because of its rapid fire capability and its deadly range
and damage. That is what makes it such a unique and interesting weapon that should not be taken
lightly. The government has been working on some bills but they are not putting enough work into
making it happen. Senator Dianne Feinstein, who is in charge of the processes of the ban, is
suggesting is that the government passes a bill that will limit the capacity of ammunition in a
magazine and ban assault weapons that are too dangerous for public use. The safety of U.S. citizens
is vital and banning assault rifles will help make the United States a safer place.
Assault rifles are defined as one of the most dangerous firearms. The government is working to try
to solve the assault weapons crisis, a problem is what they need to ban and what do they need to
limit. There is a large debate on what is classified as an assault weapon – some argue that it is a
weapon that is fully–automatic.

Stricter Gun Control
In the United States, the issue of gun violence has been overlooked for decades. However, this
problem has quickly shifted its way into the spotlight over the past couple months. The solution I
have to offer is the establishment of stricter gun control laws. So, what exactly is gun control? Gun
control is a way to restrict or control the ownership of guns to civilians. It is a social issue that has
recently been manifesting the United States because of the increasing number of mass shootings.
Various components make purchasing a gun exceptionally easy, such as not needing to have a gun
license, register the gun, give a reason for purchase, have any training, or give information on how
one is going to store the weapon safely. Implementing regulations to make buying a gun more
difficult would benefit our society. In fact, most government systems use these requirements to
allow one to purchase a firearm. The United States government should follow these countries by
implementing stricter gun control laws because it will decrease mass shootings, suicides, and
homicides.
Mass shootings are one of the many guns caused problems in the United States. In fact, as of
November 12, 2017, there has been a total of 315 mass shootings in the U.S.
(gunviolencearchive.org). Mass shootings have become a very worrisome problem due to the
understandable fear it has created for Americans to live normal lives. Many cannot do everyday

The deal in question, which was previously reported, involved the 2010 approval of a partial sale of

Current Housing Policies For Homeless Youth
According to the 2014 Department of Housing and Urban Development statistics, 34% of the total
homeless population of America are under 24 years old (HUD 2014). Although HUD recognizes
that this is an alarming number, current housing laws offer little protection for homeless youth.
Young people in America face homelessness due to financial issues, lack of family support or
insufficient housing. Many of these homeless youth are on their own and are enrolled in college and
since the recession of 2008 their numbers have been increasing steadily. Ronald Hallett, a Research
Associate in the Center for Higher Education Policy Analysis at the University of Southern
California addresses the issue in his research on the relationship between homelessness and access
to higher education. According to Mr. Hallett, college students are marginalized under current
housing and education laws that require them to submit burdensome documentation proving severe
lack of resources or an existing support system in order to obtain assistance (Hallett 2012). As a
result of these policies, many students never receive aid or shelter as they are unable to produce the
necessary documents. In order to alleviate the growing number of homeless college students, the
government must reform existing housing laws, increase funding for education and reduce student
debt burdens.
Current HUD laws that narrowly define homelessness, effectively shuts out the homeless youth that

we didn't give the government too much power. Putting a law about gun control into place will give
the government the power it needs to turn into a tyranny and us the people wouldn't have any way to

Gun Control should be enforced in the United States. The only acception for owning a gun is if you

Republicans at the Republican National Convention made the claim that the Orlando Pulse Shooting

terrorism, there was no way he could follow through if he had not had access to purchasing the gun.

I believe that banning guns, and requiring stricter and longer background checks and screening
processes for hunting guns will reduce massacres and death by guns in the United States. I agree
with above statement because Australia has passed the same Gun Laws and it has immensely
reduced massacres, homicides and suicides. In 1996, in Port Arthur, Australia, a man named Martin
Bryant entered a cafe and killed 35 people and wounded 23. Immediately after this massacre,
Australias government pushed gun control laws. They offered a gun buyback scheme, where they
purchased back the guns people owned, and banned all guns except for the sole purpose of hunting.
From 1979–1996 there were 13 fatal mass shootings (104 killed, 52 wounded). Since they passed
laws there been 0. Suicides account for 3 in 5 gun deaths in the US. Since australia's reforms, the
suicide rate dropped 74%. Just in suicides, the reforms have saved over 200 lives per year. "If you

Persuasive Essay On Gun Control
What makes gun control reform even more difficult is that many Democrats themselves can't
support gun control without risking their seats. Many representatives or senators come from districts
and states that vote Democrat for different reasons, such as union strength in the Midwest or rising
immigration numbers in the Southwest. However, states like Wisconsin, Florida, or New Mexico
also are strong supporters of guns, putting Democratic lawmakers in a precarious position (Scher
2017). This split in the party makes it nigh on impossible for bills to get anywhere. Indeed we saw
this to be true after the Sandy Hook shooting. Senator Dianne Feinstein has been a passionate
advocate for gun control nearly her entire tenure as a Senator, becoming one of the leading
Democratic senators in the push for gun control (Friedman 2013). Feinstein represents a state where
gun control measures such as assault weapons bans are extremely popular (California), so there is no
constituent fear from her to back off gun control (Wheaton 2017). After the Sandy Hook shooting,
Senator Feinstein introduced a new Assault Weapons bill to replace the previous one which had
expired in 2004. It made the sale, manufacture, or transfer of 150 semi–automatic weapons illegal,
which had features like magazine releases and thumbhole stocks, restricted large capacity
magazines, and used a one feature test to determine whether or not a gun was an assault weapon

I strongly believe in Molly Ivins theory about the comparison between the sell of automobiles and
guns. She says " we do, license automobiles and their owners, restrict their use to presumably sane
and sober adults, and keep track of who sells them to whom" (Ivins 389). At minimum, we should
do the same with guns (Ivins 389). Finally, prohibiting the sale of high–capacity magazines will also
help minimize the crime in America. A bill was recently passed that prohibits the sale, manufacture,
transfer and importation of 157 of the most commonly owned military–style assault weapons
(Feinstein). It also bans an additional group of assault weapons that can accept a detachable
ammunition magazine and have one or more military characteristics (Feinstein). The bill bans large–
capacity magazines and other ammunition feeding devices that hold more than 10 rounds of
ammunition (Feinstein). These devices allow shooters to fire numerous rounds in rapid succession
without having to stop and reload (Feinstein). I believe this bill is a big step toward ending the mass
shootings that have devastated families across the country. That's why I believe the United States
government should have the authority to restrict and regulate American citizens from buying or

Donald Trump's Argumentative Essay
I suggest that we take down this ban and stop the discrimination in our country. According to an
article from the Huffington Post, "President Donald Trump has repeatedly attempted to restrict travel
into the U.S. in the name of national security, yet none of his administration's travel bans would

Banning Bump-Stocks

  • 1. Banning Bump-Stocks Recently in the news, a proposal to ban devices which alter semiautomatic guns to make them behave like a fully automatic firearm have been presented in Congress. The legislation, according to supporters, could reduce the likelihood of massacres. Paul Ryan, Speaker of the House, claimed to be open minded about the ban of "bump–stock" accessories which enables semi–automatic weapons to fire hundreds of rounds in a minute. Additionally, California Senator Dianne Feinstein introduced a companion bill to ban bump stocks and a Florida Republican, Representative Carlos Curbelo, plans to establish a ban regarding bump stocks as well. • 3. California State Budget The state of California along with many other states has gone through periods of recessions. The major difference between California and other states is the difference how California manages the state budget. The California governor creates a budget and is sent to the Department of Finance. The Department then modifies the budget according to the likings of the governor. The governor can have a deficit but must fit the deficit into next years budget. A deficit refers to a shortage of funds and can create problems when creating the state budget. If there is a surplus (abundant amount of revenue) in the budget then the governor has the power to create programs that are politically advantageous. During times of financial crisis the process of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During Governor Pete Wilson term in the 1990s his main goal was to eliminate the huge budget gap. Many of the changes that were done in the budget involved taxes and expenditures. During this period of time, although there was not a complete unified of government, most democrats and republicans were able to negotiate with each other and were able to have majority vote to raise taxes and its deficit rules were also unclear at the time. Both situations are similar despite time differences. Similarities include a strong unified government, and weak anti–deficit rules. Governor Pete Wilson was able to have both parties agree to cut back on programs and increase revenue by increasing taxes. The only difference that can occur and has occurred is the response from the citizens. During the 1990s investments in technology came out successful therefore having more people paying more taxes. If the citizens today were to be given a vote to increase taxes, most would not agree. This is because the state of the economy reflects largely on how California becomes affected. During Wilson's term, technology was a new concept and there were many successful investments that increased many citizens income. • 5. Gun Control Controls Nothing Essays More and more frequently, we are saddened by the news of mass shootings. Whether it takes place in a school or public area, these shootings are both disastrous and mortifying. Families begin to feel anger and sadness, and demand immediate justice. Although these terrible events continue to happen, there have been no significant steps taken towards the reduction in the number of weapons; specifically assault rifles. This leads one to question do we need to ban the right to possess such weapons? If the possession of these weapons is not made illegal, we run the risk of another attack. While there is no questioning the severity of these mass shootings, a ban on assault rifles is not the answer because they are not the cause of such events, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The bill definitely has good intentions, but the fact of the matter is that these shootings are anomalies. Since 2006, there have only been six cases in which ten or more people were killed in a given shooting (USA Today). Therefore, these are not common events. At less than once per year for the last seven years, it is something that might even go unnoticed had there not been a great deal of news coverage following such events. To add to that, out of the 231 mass killings in the United States in the last seven years, only a mere thirty–two of these cases have been due to guns (USA Today). This means that there are many more important issues than assault rifles when it comes to the prevention of mass shootings. One of the main issues with mass shootings is not the guns but the people who wield the guns. In the United States, less than six percent of people are considered to have "serious" mental disorders (National Institute of Mental Health). Less than one percent of that number would even be at the risk of committing as catastrophic a crime as a mass shooting. This is the type of person who would do such a thing. Again, this is not common at all. We are talking about a handful of people in the whole country, yet news coverage and popular opinion makes it out to be a common event. The dramatic, offensive, finger pointing, denigrating news headlines were back to mortify, harrow, humiliate and shame some poor souls made to fess up after they messed up. Surely, these people should wear a dunce cap. Yahoo News: "IAEA chief fails to reassure US senators on Iran deal". One dunce cap for the chief. National Public Radio: "Senator Schumer Sees 'Serious Weakness' In Iran Arms Deal, Won't Back It". And one dunce cap for the Democratic Party. BBC news: "Has the international community failed Haiti?" I hope they have a dunce cap wide enough for that one! What I did not expect, however, was to find similar judgmental language in the jargon–oxygenated bubble land of academia. Judgmental expressions permeate scientific papers. "Many recent studies based on the surrogate data method failed to identify significant non–linearity in the EEG". "Many methods developed to date have serious shortcomings." That critical style of writing is even promoted in a popular British phrase bank where young scientists from all ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Isn't Science hard enough? Our papers will gain strength and authority. Build on other people's work, extend the reach of their contribution, credit them for inspiring you. • 9. Essay On Surveillance Justice is dead, extinct, eradicated by those who seek monetary gain as opposed to altruism. Why would you give the people what they need as well as desire, when instead you could line your own pockets with capital from corrupt billionaires and businesses? Society has surpassed the point of complete saturation with these injustices, and now we are on the brink of a catastrophic dystopian meltdown. With politicians drafting bills to monitor and control the public, government agencies sidestepping the law in a misguided attempt to achieve justice, and a dishonest mainstream media trying to sway the public view every step of the way, it is quite a wonder we have lasted this long. Surveillance is the way of the future, and anyone who exhibits a dissenting opinion is labeled un– American, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Bills are drafted and passed by those who will not live long enough to see the consequences of their actions, and supported by those who are too powerful to be affected by such policies. When the options are to damage the future of your community in exchange for copious bribes, or to vote against such a proposition and be subjected to negative publicity from the supporters of the proposal, the choice is all too obvious. "Arguing that you don't care about the right to privacy because you have nothing to hide is no different than saying you don't care about free speech because you have nothing to say." • 11. The Year of the Woman Essay The Year of the Woman Reporters portray female and male candidates differently when covering campaigns for political office. In order to counteract the biased coverage in the papers the women of the 1992 Senate race used 30–second advertising spots to assert their key issue stances and strengths. Though this was not the sole purpose of their ads, they were very much geared toward compensating for the lack of fair coverage they were receiving in the news. Ultimately they persevered. Through verbal and nonverbal content, as defined by Lynda Lee Kaid, women designed their ads to portray a high level of competence. 1992 is widely known as 'The Year of the Woman,' when 5 women won Senate seats and 24 new women were elected to the House. "All ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Personal frames written by journalists in the 1992 campaign were analyzed by John Devit and supported the claim that the coverage of female candidates was biased. The sources in his analysis were more likely to use personal frames in describing female candidates than in describing male candidates (Appendix 1). Newspapers cover women inadequately and personally. In an Arizona Republic news article about Governor Jane Hull the journalist describes her as, "A grandmotherly red head dressed in a sensible suit climbs out of the back seat and strolls to the hotel...if anyone in the lobby recognizes Gov. Jane Hull...they don't let on." The Rocky Mountain News is another example of journalists guilty of the bias. In a news article covering another gubernatorial race the writer describes one candidate, Gail Schoeletter, as "showing up at glitzy campaign to–dos in a dusty 1993 Toyota with cans of apricot nectar and granola bars sliding around on the floor boards." These two newspapers are only a sample of the type of coverage women are subjected to during their political campaigns. Their issues are rarely covered and instead their personal habits and clothing style are commented on as the topic of choice ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Essay about America Needs Gun Control When looking at all of the important issues of today's society, one of the most neglected issues revolves around guns. Guns serve two different purposes: to defend and to kill. Even though I've been on this Earth for only 21 years, I've become keen and have taken an interest in the study of guns and how they pose more problems in society than any other issue. My interest all started around the time of the Columbine shooting in Colorado and how society has taken steps since that point in history. Going back to the two different purposes, both have been used to help explain the differences in the distinctions of different gun related events that continue to occur, such as mass shootings. Problem analysis, as stated, will help to explain how ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "Find a way to measure the problem that is consistent with the way it's defined" (Kraft, Furlong 161). As far as individuals with violent criminal records and individuals with mental disorders, they shouldn't be allowed access to guns. As per the National Conference of State Legislatures, there are restrictions against those who have mental issues and recent criminal records (Possession... NCSL). "Approximately 2,221,000 of those convicted each year committed violent crimes and approximately 1,121,000 used guns" (Mountjoy). What does this statistic tell us? Although this statistic is used for petty gun crimes, who's to say this wouldn't happen in the case of mass shootings? • 19. The Assassination of the Mayor of Castro Street Essay The Assassination of the Mayor of Castro Street and the Consensus of the Judicial System It was November 27th, 1978. There was a cheerful atmosphere in San Francisco's City Hall that morning. Supervisor Harvey Milk's good mood was due to Mayor George Moscone's upcoming announcement to the press. He was going to publicize that he had decided not to reappoint the ultra– conservative "voice for the family", Dan White, back to the board of supervisors. Harvey Milk was a fierce advocate of this political move, for he was the first openly gay elected official, and thus, the most important political leader for homosexuals at the time. He snuck through a window in City Hall just before the press conference was scheduled to take place, and swiftly shot and killed both men in their own offices. He confessed to the assassinations just hours later at the local police station. Despite the evidence of premeditation, the obvious animosity between the assassin and the victims, and the immediate confession, Dan White was only convicted of two counts of voluntary manslaughter. He served five years in prison for his crime. In the context of the assassination of two government officials, the jury's conviction is almost inconsequential. To fully understand the implication of the term "voluntary manslaughter" it is necessary to distinguish the different classifications of murder as defined by California State law. The definition of murder constitutes both deliberation and premeditation, while voluntary manslaughter is defined as the killing of another human spontaneously with the lack of previous planning. After staying up all night, Dan White called his secretary and asked for a ride to City Hall, having no purpose to be in the building, due to the fact that he was no longer employed there. He brought with him his gun, and because he brought ten extra bullets as well he clearly had the intention of firing it. • 21. Essay on The Dangers Posed by Public Use of Assault Weapons Assault weapon control is becoming an unavoidable topic in the United States. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation more than nine hundred people have died from mass shootings in the past seven years and an assault rifle was used in twelve of the forty–three mass shootings in the past four years. The U.S. Department of Defense has long defined assault rifles as fully automatic rifles used for military purposes. The National Firearm Act of 1934 prohibited fully automatic weapons in the United States. The 1994 Assault Weapon Ban prohibited semi and fully automatic weapons and any weapon with military style characteristics. California Senator, Dianne Feinstein, is leading the charge in the American government to pass a bill that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While there are many assault rifles the highest manufactured and purchased in the U.S. is the AR– 15. The AR–15 is a type of semi–automatic weapon that can hold up to 100 rounds and can shoot up to 50 rounds per minute. The U.S. is the highest manufacturer and consumer of these rifles, but similar types are made throughout the world. This weapon is said to be used for hunting coyote or other vermin. However, this weapon was used in the December 14, 2012 mass murder at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton, Connecticut and in the July 20, 2012 Century movie theatre mass shooting in Aurora, Colorado. These incidences compelled a need for a government response to better control these dangerous weapons. In a 2012 Washington post article by Brad Plumer he looks at what the 1994 law actually did, where it failed, and whether it could be reworked to reduce gun violence. He cited the complexity regarding the definition of an "Assault Weapon." Since congress did not want to ban all semiautomatic weapons, and there lack of a clear technical definition made the ban more complex and easy to find loop holes. He also states that it was illegal to manufacture assault weapons and high–capacity magazines, there was an exemption to any weapon or magazine that was manufactured before the law was in effect. There was already more than 24 million large capacity magazines available before the ban was in effect so it was easy to obtain a weapon of this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 23. Persuasive Essay On Gun Control There has been much controversy about the issue of gun controls. Many different laws about gun control have been put in place. While some argue that there are too many gun restricting laws, others people say otherwise. Due to the increase of deaths each year because of guns, some of the laws associated with gun ownership that have been removed, need to be reexamined . One law that has been revoked is the Dianne Feinstein law. In the video, " The Rachel Maddow Show " by Rachel Maddow, it states, " It was in reaction to that massacre at 101 California that then Senator Dianne Feinstein led the national fight for an assault weapons ban in 1994. And at the time, nobody said it would pass. But it did pass and it was in effect for 10 years, while the Constitution survived and everything. President George W. Bush and the Republican–controlled Congress let that law expire 10 years later in 2004" ( Maddow). To explain furthermore why this law shouldn't have been revoked, " And because they let it expire, that is why the mother of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooter was able to buy legally and easily the Bushmaster AR–15 assault rifle that the Sandy Hook gunman used to fire all but one of 152 bullets that he fired in the space of less than five minutes that morning three months ago today in Connecticut. These laws were later known as the Bill of Rights, which lists every living person's rights. On this Bill of Rights is what is know as the Second Amendment which gives United States citizens the right to bear arms. Over the years this amendment has been questioned by the government on how it affects the safety of citizens. Safety is important and the new high–capacity magazines could be a true threat to America's safety. These new weapons consisted of the Thompson, a submachine gun, which fired a .45 caliber bullet at high velocities. This rifle became the standard fully automatic rifle for the United States Armed Forces. Though this weapon had a very important role in winning the war, it was also used in various crimes throughout the United States in the early nineteenth century. Does this make this rifle a bad thing to own? While some would argue that the weapon was a threat to the public's safety, and while the others would say it was not, it still fired at a high velocity which makes the possibility of multiple deaths more possible. This caused a large concern to erupt among the public in large cities where mobs were becoming popular. It was obvious that these new found guns would be great for protecting the public, however, it would also come to harm them since they were falling into the hands of criminals. The Nuclear Of The Iran Nuclear Deal When comparing the four articles we had found, we noticed that though they are presenting the same information of the Iran nuclear deal, but they seem to tell it in separate ways. The articles come from two American papers (one Liberal, Washington Post, and one Conservative, Washington Times), a British newspaper (The Guardian), and an Iranian paper (the Tehran Times). In the sense of discussing the big facts of the story itself, all four papers refer to the deal as either "historic" or "landmark," which could be considered a neutral stance since it could mean either the good or bad connotations of the words. All four also discuss Israel's concerns, though some emphasize it more than others. Mention of President Obama's plan to veto any legislation that is created to overturn the deal is also in all four. Also discussed are the Iranian centrifuges, if only just mentioned, they are stated in all papers. Another trait that the articles have in common is that their sources seem to be press releases and direct quotes about the deal. From that simplification alone, they may seem similar, but there are some huge differences when it comes to the framing of this story. Regarding Israel's concerns, each paper has taken a different approach to addressing it. In the Washington Times, they tell about the concerns of Israel's in the title of the article, using "alarm in Israel" in there, which leads one to think that they may be trying to get at our "pro–Israel" sentiment, especially ... He moved from New York City to San Francisco in 1972, where he stayed there till his assassination in 1978. Upon moving to San Francisco, Harvey opened a camera shop, which later became a popular place for gay community in San Francisco. While in charge of the shop he organizes gays' purchasing powers to gain political alliances, their first test was Coors Beer boycotting, due to the fact that the leaders of the union did not meet the union demands. Harvey and his organization convinced the gay community to drop Coors Beer from #1 in sales in San Francisco, in which they succeeded. Tension had started between the gay community and the police; the police would go on random raids on gay bars with their badges covered and beat them. Once the harassed guys are on the streets the police would arrest them for "blocking traffic". So gay people started wearing and having whistles handy so when they hear the whistle they would come running to help whoever is in trouble. His father's distinguished family traced itself back to Rabbi Yochanan Hasandlar, a student of the tanna, a torah sage around the end of the second Jewish Temple, Rabbi Akiva ben Yosef, lived from about 50 C.E to about 132 C.E, and from there to King David, who was leader of the ancient Israelite kingdom as it retook its homeland. In turn, their children the Rashbam, Rabbenu Tam etc. who became later known as the tosafist were practically commentators on Rashi comments. Furthermore, he was the unofficial Rabbi of the entire Troyes/Europe, because he was the greatest torah scholar of his time and had his own Yeshiva. Therefore, he probably received money through answering people's halachic questions. • 37. Essay on Gun Control Rights One of many controversial topics in the United States is gun control. It is clearly written in the Second Amendment of the Constitution that the people will have the right to bear arms. Recently; however, people have been misusing those firearms and have been harming others with them. The government is trying to regulate the sale, distribution, and ownership of guns because of this reason. Some of the arguments being made by the politicians is simply if the government has the right to be able to control, and if it does, the effectiveness of the public policy to regulate guns. The importance of gun control as a health issue is a necessity. "Each year, the United States has a bit over 8,000 murders with firearms" (Wilblin 1) "The US ... The Second Amendment of the United States Constitution reads: "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." The constitution is clearly saying all citizens have the right to be able to own and carry a weapon or firearm. On June 26, 2008, in District of Columbia v. Heller, the United States Supreme Court held in a 5–4 decision that the Second Amendment protects an individual's right to possess a firearm for traditionally lawful purposes, such as self–defense within the home and within federal enclaves (Cornell 1). This is showing how our founding fathers supported the right to bear arms. Ownership of certain weapons should be prohibited. Assault rifles and submachine guns are firearms that are never necessary. The United States should set a goal to having fewer high–power weapons available. However, the only situation to these firearms being more acceptable to use than others, are the warlike scenarios. The thought of submachine guns and assault rifles being necessary is sickening. What would be the purpose of owning an assault rifle or submachine guns? Gun–bearers ... • 49. The Assault Rifle Ban If the government would take a more rapid pace in a full assault weapon ban, then the murder rate in the country would drop dramatically. The U.S. has one of the highest murder rates for developed countries such as Japan who has a murder rate of 0.4 per 100,000 people and Britain with a 1.2 per 100,000 people. The U.S. has a murder rate of 4.7 per 100,000 people and it is not getting any better. A ban on assault rifles would have a positive effect on the murder rate. The safety of U.S. citizens is vital and banning assault rifles will help make the United States a safer place. Assault rifles are defined as one of the most dangerous firearms. The government is working to try to solve the assault weapons crisis, a problem is what they need to ban and what do they need to limit. There is a large debate on what is classified as an assault weapon – some argue that it is a weapon that is fully–automatic. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 51. Stricter Gun Control In the United States, the issue of gun violence has been overlooked for decades. However, this problem has quickly shifted its way into the spotlight over the past couple months. The solution I have to offer is the establishment of stricter gun control laws. So, what exactly is gun control? Gun control is a way to restrict or control the ownership of guns to civilians. It is a social issue that has recently been manifesting the United States because of the increasing number of mass shootings. Various components make purchasing a gun exceptionally easy, such as not needing to have a gun license, register the gun, give a reason for purchase, have any training, or give information on how one is going to store the weapon safely. Implementing regulations to make buying a gun more difficult would benefit our society. In fact, most government systems use these requirements to allow one to purchase a firearm. The United States government should follow these countries by implementing stricter gun control laws because it will decrease mass shootings, suicides, and homicides. Mass shootings are one of the many guns caused problems in the United States. In fact, as of November 12, 2017, there has been a total of 315 mass shootings in the U.S. (gunviolencearchive.org). Mass shootings have become a very worrisome problem due to the understandable fear it has created for Americans to live normal lives. Many cannot do everyday activities, such as go to a concert, movie, grocery store, or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) included then–Secretary of State Clinton. The deal in question, which was previously reported, involved the 2010 approval of a partial sale of Canadian mining company Uranium One to Russia's Rosatom nuclear company. The U.S. was involved because the sale gave the Russians control of part of the uranium supply in the U.S. Grassley wrote in his letters that he's not "convinced" by previous "assurances" that there were no unresolved national security concerns. As you may be aware, sex trafficking is a widespread problem for which there are no preventative measures. • 57. The Importance Of Being A President In The United States First, do you really want the same president to be president for 8 years in a row? The right candidate for president he or she would be running the state very smoothly. I found some evidence from a website called Theweek.com. They said, "that in the 2012 election about 57.5 percent of citizens who can vote cast ballots." While 37.4 percent of the electorate voted. Some people don't really care about who the president is. Next, I think that all citizens should be allowed to vote because the wrong president could harm the state, the citizens that could vote only like half of them do, and it could also mean a better state. • 59. Current Housing Policies For Homeless Youth According to the 2014 Department of Housing and Urban Development statistics, 34% of the total homeless population of America are under 24 years old (HUD 2014). Although HUD recognizes that this is an alarming number, current housing laws offer little protection for homeless youth. Young people in America face homelessness due to financial issues, lack of family support or insufficient housing. Many of these homeless youth are on their own and are enrolled in college and since the recession of 2008 their numbers have been increasing steadily. Ronald Hallett, a Research Associate in the Center for Higher Education Policy Analysis at the University of Southern California addresses the issue in his research on the relationship between homelessness and access to higher education. According to Mr. Hallett, college students are marginalized under current housing and education laws that require them to submit burdensome documentation proving severe lack of resources or an existing support system in order to obtain assistance (Hallett 2012). As a result of these policies, many students never receive aid or shelter as they are unable to produce the necessary documents. In order to alleviate the growing number of homeless college students, the government must reform existing housing laws, increase funding for education and reduce student debt burdens. Current HUD laws that narrowly define homelessness, effectively shuts out the homeless youth that are staying in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 61. Should Government Be Allowed To Bear Arms Essay "The Second Amendment isn't there for duck hunting, its there to protect us from tyrannical government and street thugs," states the British journalist Piers Morgan. When the United States Constitution it wasn't put into place so people can hunt or participate in shooting games, it was so we didn't give the government too much power. Putting a law about gun control into place will give the government the power it needs to turn into a tyranny and us the people wouldn't have any way to protect ourselves. If we were to allow the government to place a law restricting the ability to bear arms we would be sacrificing things like our self–defense, the right to hunt and sport shooting, and finally One of the best parts of living in the United States is the right for a person to protect himself or herself from a deadly force in which ever way will minimize the threat the most. For example, the United Kingdom was the first place to ban handguns in 1997 after a man shot and killed 216 elementary students then followed by shooting himself. A year before the ban, in 1996, the murder rate was 1.12 per 100,000 people. In 2002 the homicide rate went up to 2.1 homicides per 100,000 people (Altucher). • 65. Gun Control Should Be Illegal Essay Gun Control should be enforced in the United States. The only acception for owning a gun is if you are a hunter, but stricter and longer screening processes should be enforced. Republicans at the Republican National Convention made the claim that the Orlando Pulse Shooting was an act of Islamic Terrorism, and was not at all an act of domestic gun violence. (Republican vote, Gallup Poll). I, however, disagree. If Orlando Mateen had planned on carrying out an act of terrorism, there was no way he could follow through if he had not had access to purchasing the gun. He passed his background check and was able to purchase a handgun, and an MCX Rifle. MCX Rifles are semi–automatic weapons that are able to fire hundreds of shots in just minutes. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I believe that banning guns, and requiring stricter and longer background checks and screening processes for hunting guns will reduce massacres and death by guns in the United States. I agree with above statement because Australia has passed the same Gun Laws and it has immensely reduced massacres, homicides and suicides. In 1996, in Port Arthur, Australia, a man named Martin Bryant entered a cafe and killed 35 people and wounded 23. Immediately after this massacre, Australias government pushed gun control laws. They offered a gun buyback scheme, where they purchased back the guns people owned, and banned all guns except for the sole purpose of hunting. From 1979–1996 there were 13 fatal mass shootings (104 killed, 52 wounded). Since they passed laws there been 0. Suicides account for 3 in 5 gun deaths in the US. Since australia's reforms, the suicide rate dropped 74%. Just in suicides, the reforms have saved over 200 lives per year. "If you look at the number of Americans killed since 9/11 by terrorism, it's less than 100. If you look at the number been killed by gun violence, it's in the tens of thousands. • 67. Persuasive Essay On Gun Control What makes gun control reform even more difficult is that many Democrats themselves can't support gun control without risking their seats. Many representatives or senators come from districts and states that vote Democrat for different reasons, such as union strength in the Midwest or rising immigration numbers in the Southwest. However, states like Wisconsin, Florida, or New Mexico also are strong supporters of guns, putting Democratic lawmakers in a precarious position (Scher 2017). This split in the party makes it nigh on impossible for bills to get anywhere. Indeed we saw this to be true after the Sandy Hook shooting. Senator Dianne Feinstein has been a passionate advocate for gun control nearly her entire tenure as a Senator, becoming one of the leading Democratic senators in the push for gun control (Friedman 2013). Feinstein represents a state where gun control measures such as assault weapons bans are extremely popular (California), so there is no constituent fear from her to back off gun control (Wheaton 2017). After the Sandy Hook shooting, Senator Feinstein introduced a new Assault Weapons bill to replace the previous one which had expired in 2004. It made the sale, manufacture, or transfer of 150 semi–automatic weapons illegal, which had features like magazine releases and thumbhole stocks, restricted large capacity magazines, and used a one feature test to determine whether or not a gun was an assault weapon (Feinstien 2013). • 71. Gun Control Joscelyn Garcia English 1301 Instructor: Nancy Cassano Essay 2 2/13/2013 Gun Control in America The United States government should have the authority to restrict and regulate American citizens from buying or owning firearms. Gun Control laws are necessary in a state because they decrease violence and increase government protection in the state. Gun laws are the cause of much violent crime in America, and they need to be changed to better background checks, tracking the movement and sale of weapons, and prohibiting the sale of high capacity magazines. First of all, an updated background check system will help prevent gun violence ("Updated"). In 1968,Congress passed the first federal laws to limit access to guns, by ... She says " we do, license automobiles and their owners, restrict their use to presumably sane and sober adults, and keep track of who sells them to whom" (Ivins 389). At minimum, we should do the same with guns (Ivins 389). Finally, prohibiting the sale of high–capacity magazines will also help minimize the crime in America. A bill was recently passed that prohibits the sale, manufacture, transfer and importation of 157 of the most commonly owned military–style assault weapons (Feinstein). It also bans an additional group of assault weapons that can accept a detachable ammunition magazine and have one or more military characteristics (Feinstein). The bill bans large– capacity magazines and other ammunition feeding devices that hold more than 10 rounds of ammunition (Feinstein). These devices allow shooters to fire numerous rounds in rapid succession without having to stop and reload (Feinstein). I believe this bill is a big step toward ending the mass shootings that have devastated families across the country.
