Music is a magical piece of history, and has changed throughout history with the changing of
generations. As culture changes music changes as well. Artists have found a way to use music, art,
and fashion throughout history as a way to convey feelings of love, sadness, frustration, and death.
Musicians find a way to move their listeners with the sounds they hear. With every rise and fall of a
note and change in melody or tempo, listeners find themselves holding their breath or possibly

Aaron Copland is a man who has truly done just that. His love for music started when he was very
young when his sister taught him how to play piano (Encyclopedia). From that point on, his thirst
and passion for music grew. At the age when most boys are outside playing, getting dirty Copland
decided he would become a composer. Attending Boy's High School he began to study music
(Encyclopedia). In 1921, Copland moved to France to further study music at the American
Conservatory in Fontainebleau. It is there he would experience the different style of European
music. Schoenberg and Stravinsky had always inspired him, and his stay in Paris gave him the
opportunity to enhance his love and understanding of their music.

Music and technology aid one another. In a way a person can capture music they love through
technology and then the electronic companies flourish due to the sale and popularity of these
electronic devices. If a person wants to listen to music they can turn on a stereo or TV, choose a CD
or DVD to play, or listen to a songs downloaded in ITunes. All of these devices are proof to show
how technology is used to record, play, and change the way music is heard. A look through history
will show how far society has come in music alone. The development of technology has changed the

It started off with humming, then singing. People sang in church choirs, in the living room, or on a

There were many changes in the business of music records from the 1980s onward. For example, the
Telecommunications Act of 1996 law was passed. This enabled a free–for–all in for the record
companies and granted them the ability to compete with anyone in the market. What ended up
happening was the companies bought each other left and right until there were 5 or 6 big companies

Surf music is a subgenre of rock music associated with surf culture. It was most popular between
1962 and 1964 and was found particularly in Southern California. Surf rock began in the early
1960s as instrumental dance music. The sound was largely attributed to electric guitars which were
particularly characterized by the extensive use of a "wet" spring reverb which was thought to sound
like waves. Guitarists also began to make use of the vibrato arm on their guitar to bend the pitch of
notes downward which they used to create electronic tremolo effects with their rapid, alternating

rock existed in two major forms.

Throughout history all cultures have been influenced by music. Before the Baroque era in music
there were many forms of western music. Most of this music was monophonic, sung in chant used
mostly for religious purposes. During the previous millennia most music was sung in chant form

by the people to praise the Lord. Eventually polyphonic music developed, first starting as
monophonic chant sung in thirds and fifths, and later contrapuntal music was created. During this

In the late sixteenth century and early seventeenth century the Baroque style of music started in

Edison's idea to record sounds on round cylinders was a good idea except for the sound quality and
general effort that was required to make and replicate sound. The Phonograph was one of the earliest
attempts at recording devices. Thomas A. Edison wanted to create this device in order to assist with

founded. The Academy not only promoted singing instruction but they also promoted the study of
music and related theory. This school is one school that can be shown that showed the improvement
from one century to the next. This school shows the expansion from simple fundamentals and just

time. His name was Lowell Mason. Around this time he was the leader of American church music.

One of the first major changes that Gordy made was the adaptation to change the sound to match the
psychedelia era that was going on. The psychedelia era began with the gathering of people around
the new California law to outlaw the use of LSD. Gordy would take advantage of this by changing

Luis Milan lived from 1500 to 1561 in Valencia, Spain. He was a Spanish renaissance composer
who was the first composer to write and publish music for the vihuela.
In 1536, Milan published a book entitled Libro de Música de Vihuela de Mano Intitulado de
Maestro. This book is his most famous, and is the first book in history that consisted of vihuela
music. It included many villancicos, pavanas, and over 40 fantasias. It also included vocal pieces
with accompaniment provided by the vihuela. It was organized so that the harder pieces were
towards the end of the book and the easier ones were first. It also contained alternate passages in
some of the pieces for more advanced players.
Milan wrote various other books besides the one mentioned before. The first book that he wrote was
called El Juego de Mandar. It was published in 1535 and was a parlor game book that also included
music in it. His last written publication, El Cortesano, was written in 1561. It did not include any
music but instead was a book that described the typical life of a professional musician at the time
that he was working for the court, which was before 1538.
Not much is known about Milan's life, except that he lived in Valencia for the majority of his life
and worked for the ducal court up until the time he began to publish music. He dedicated his book of
vihuela music to King John III of Portugal, which could mean that he visited or lived in Portugal for

The Police changed rock like cell phones changed ways of communication. The trio was from
England and came together with their leader, Sting, who helped take rock into a new form. The
Police took rock into a progressive direction, won three grammy awards, and even got into the Hall
of Fame, making them one of the best bands of the 20th century. All musicians become interested in

successful was Sting with his Blue Turtle album (Fornatale, 1987). They had signed with A&M not
to long before. A&M's "Roxanne" was a mess and didn't get on any charts (The Police, 2018). The
