1877-1900 A History Of Music And Music Technology
1877–1900 history of music and music technology
In the years between 1877 and 1900 music and music technology started to spread out and become
better known to the people around the world and in their own households thanks to the phonograph.
It all started in 1877 when Thomas Edison Invented the phonograph It was the first device that could
record sound and play it back. the phonograph helped many musicians make their music known to
others around the world and also helped them rise to fame. It also helped introduce new types, styles
and range of music to the people like in 1890 the very first native american music was recorded.
After the phonograph 20 years later in 1897 the gramophone was made. The gramophone was made
by Emile Berliner like

Music Is A Magical Piece Of History
Music is a magical piece of history, and has changed throughout history with the changing of
generations. As culture changes music changes as well. Artists have found a way to use music, art,
and fashion throughout history as a way to convey feelings of love, sadness, frustration, and death.
Musicians find a way to move their listeners with the sounds they hear. With every rise and fall of a
note and change in melody or tempo, listeners find themselves holding their breath or possibly
wiping away tears.
Aaron Copland is a man who has truly done just that. His love for music started when he was very
young when his sister taught him how to play piano (Encyclopedia). From that point on, his thirst
and passion for music grew. At the age when most boys are outside playing, getting dirty Copland
decided he would become a composer. Attending Boy's High School he began to study music
(Encyclopedia). In 1921, Copland moved to France to further study music at the American
Conservatory in Fontainebleau. It is there he would experience the different style of European
music. Schoenberg and Stravinsky had always inspired him, and his stay in Paris gave him the
opportunity to enhance his love and understanding of their music.
When Copland returned to America he wrote his first major piece of music named simply the
Symphony for Organ and Orchestra. This was just the beginning of Copland's early writings. He
wanted to experiment with music in his compositions. Copland began to blend music

Emphasis on people's rights and the ability to shape the
environment was sought out. The American and the French Revolution were momentous
events during this period. People's view of the world and their relationship to it began to go
through major change. Music was viewed as an innocent luxury, and composers had to react
to an increased demand for songs. Many people started to express their emotions in their
songs. ( Essentials of Music.)
The Romantic Era (1825–1900) was formed by a clearer understanding of the world and
a human's place in it, which changed the way people thought of everything and everyone. Many
parts of Europe tried to free themselves from its foreign rulers. Music started to tell stories,
represent people, express ideas of philosophy, and to highlight national identities. Composers
began to incorporate ethnic influences in their music, and musicians looked at it as a calling rather
than an occupation. ( Essentials of Music.)
European music is where the search for American music's beginnings would be found.
Louis Charles Elson, author of The History of American Music states that when the Pilgrims and
English settlers found their destination ( New England), they had their religious songs that they
sang, but made no attempts to change them. They would not accept any alterations to establish
any new music to adapt to their new surroundings. All they did was mimic what they had learned

Calypso Music History
You've probably heard the song, "Under the sea" from the Disney movie, "The Little Mermaid". Or,
maybe you've heard the song "Day–O", also known as the "banana boat song". Well, did you know
that these songs are examples of Calypso music? In this report, I will be explaining, where it came
from, what it is, and facts and information. Calypso music originated in Venezuela, Trinidad, and
Tobago during the start of the 20th century. It was traced back to West African Kaiso and the arrival
of the French planters and their slaves in the 1800s. People think that these songs were introduced
during the French settlement of the island of Trinidad. An African slave named Gros Jean is thought
to be the first Calypsonian, or someone who makes Calypso music. Over the last century Calypso
music has been becoming well known by not only the Carribean, but around the world. 1914 was a
huge year for Calypso music, because this was when the first Calypso recording was made by the
Victor Gramophone Company of New York. So, now you no where it came from, now I will explain
what Calypso music is. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Calypso music is considered as party and dance music, but the main focus is really the lyrics.
Calypso music was used by slaves. The slaves would use the lyrics to make their work go by faster.
The lyrics are usually political in nature and also feature some kind of social commentary. A classic
calypso song called "Rum and Coca–Cola", talks about the American Military bases in Trinidad in
the 1940s. The movie "Rio" features many Calypso songs. In the movie "The Little Mermaid" the
very popular song, "Under the Sea", is also Calypso music. The song "Day–O" is one of the most
well known Calypso songs. The Tim Burton movie, "Beetle Juice" feature some of Harry
Belafonte's Calypso sings. Some Calypso music artists are: Mighty Sparrow, Harry Belafonte, David

The Progression Of Music In History
Progression Of Music in History
Music has made many breakthroughs within its own history. Not only has it evolved in its sound but
representation in other forms of media. Music's overall topic, popular genre, sound quality, and how
its made has made great progress. The difference between newer and old music is very
commendable. Music is being made differently all together.
Many topics from older music during the 11th century was religious or relating to forms of
spirituality. In the mid to early 1600's, music was focused on the composition of instrumental
elements. Pianists such as Beethoven are famous for their great work on the piano and writing the
music. 1930's music is considered swing, dance, or big band music relating to the major

Pittsburgh Music History
Throughout Pittsburgh history, the area has produced many acclaimed musicians and music
organizations that have created music that has been enjoyed across America. Pittsburgh is a city of
music with a history in Jazz, Classical, Pop, Doo–Wop, Rock, and most currently Rap. Many of
Pittsburgh's old musicians are award winning performers and song writers who have sold millions of
records. Their music can now be heard on movies, TV, and even Broadway shows. These famous
artists would be nothing without their teachers, producers, music promoters, managers, and radio
personalities. This essay will take a look back into the roots of Pittsburgh to examine its historical
and cultural music background.

In the 1840's Pittsburgh's growing working class wanted more entertainment. To meet this demand
there was an increase in construction of new music halls over the next two decades. The new
theaters included the Melodeon Theatre, Lafayette Hall, Foster's Gaieties, Trimble's Variety,
Vierheller's Concert Garden, Wilkens Hall, Sefton's Opera House, The Pittsburgh Opera House, the
Academy of Music, the new Masonic Hall, and the Eagle Ice Cream Saloon that launched the career
of Stephen Foster. It all began with Stephen Foster. His songs "Oh! Susanna" and "Camptown
Races" remain fairly popular today. Foster is acknowledged as "father of American music." He was
inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970, and he was also inducted into the Nashville
Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2010. Following him in the first signs of "pop" music was Adam Wade,
Vaughn Monroe, Josie Carrie, and even Chris Kirkpatrick from N'Sync. All these pop stars plus
many, many more were Pittsburgh natives.
A baby boomer generation of rock artists emerged from Pittsburgh during the 1960's and 1980's.
Wild Cherry had their smash hit "Play that Funky Music." Other small bands included Diamond
Reo, The Granati Brothers, the Iron City Houserockers, and the Silencers. These along with other

Technology: The Effects on Music throughout History
Music and technology aid one another. In a way a person can capture music they love through
technology and then the electronic companies flourish due to the sale and popularity of these
electronic devices. If a person wants to listen to music they can turn on a stereo or TV, choose a CD
or DVD to play, or listen to a songs downloaded in ITunes. All of these devices are proof to show
how technology is used to record, play, and change the way music is heard. A look through history
will show how far society has come in music alone. The development of technology has changed the
way the music industry operates and the way society hears and purchases music today.
It started off with humming, then singing. People sang in church choirs, in the living room, or on a
stage. Music can be heard by vocals or by the melodic tune of instruments. People paid to go to
symphonies and listen to composers perform their masterpieces. Family gathered around the piano,
or at a church to listen to music on the holidays. Music was not portable, nor was it recordable.
According to the novel, Looking Backward in 1888, the philosophy was that technology was the
"solution to the ills plaguing modern life and the means to achieve a perfect society" (Katz, 51).
Meaning that life was boring and technology was the answer to bettering and changing society. In
1877, Thomas Edison invented the

Essay on The History of Music Industry
In the past, music has been a costly business, where only people with a lot of money could enter and
be successful in the industry. Changes in the music industry coupled with new computer technology
have made it much easier for people without a lot of money to compose, produce, and distribute
their creation. In order to get a better understanding of the music industry in comparison to 2014,
one has to look at its history. There were many things that happened from the 1980's onward, and
they brought on a significant impact towards the music industry. Development in computer
technology has also made a big impression on music. Many things within these fields have enabled

There were many changes in the business of music records from the 1980s onward. For example, the
Telecommunications Act of 1996 law was passed. This enabled a free–for–all in for the record
companies and granted them the ability to compete with anyone in the market. What ended up
happening was the companies bought each other left and right until there were 5 or 6 big companies
that ran everything. The record industry controlled music production, distribution, and airplay on the
radio. Radio started out on the AM frequencies, then later the FM higher fidelity stations. The only
way to get music through to the masses feasibly was to go through the highly selective record
companies because they were the only ones who could mass produce music. To distribute, first they
sold music on gramophone records, an early distribution medium made of processed shellac from
the lac bug. Then they moved on to track tapes, vinyl records, compact cassettes, and eventually
CDs.
Emerging digital Era: 1980's And Beyond:
Gradually after this event, the medium for music had changed, from various types of analog grooved
discs, to various types of magnetic tape–based reels and cartridges, to compact discs, or CDs, to

Music Throughout History
Throughout history people listened to music and used it for various different things. In the earliest of
times music was used to help emphasize story telling(Young 11). As centuries went on music
became more prominent in everyday things and eventually was used for social occasions like
festivals and weddings(Young 82). Today we use music for everything from recreational to
rehabilitating people. We use music to express ourselves and say things we don't know how to say.
Music is an outlet for people now–a–days. What people don't realize is that music is basically a
medicine. It helps us rehabilitate people, calm them down, keep our bodies in rhythm, and it is used
to help people with disabilities function better in society. The only thing is is that people don't know
how to properly use music to help themselves and others. But music is beneficial to people's health!
More than 5,000 musical therapists work in hospitals, schools, rehabs, nursing homes, prisons, and
at people's homes in the United States today and more than half of them are working with the
mentally ill, disabled, or the elderly(Campbell 126). As early as the 19th and early 20th centuries
Americans have been using music for medicinal reasons(Campbell 121). In early 1899 James L.
Corning conducted the first controlled study using music to treat his patients(Campbell 122). Using
the musical styles of Wagner and other Romantic composers he concluded their styles helped reduce

Summary Of Emp Music History Or Music Trivia By Jackie...
Evaluating an Evaluation
In the article "EMP: Music History or Music Trivia?", Jackie Wyngaard gives her point of view of
the Experience Music Project (EMP), an artistic installation in Seattle (WA), that holds information
and memorabilia about the various music movements through the American history. Based on what
she believes that a music museum should be, she claims that the space is a failure. That is the first
important element of an essay: an idea or point of view over something that the author judges
important. The purpose of an essay is to inform, clearly, what that idea is, bringing arguments that
will support that claim. And the author does that by bringing evidences of what a museum should be
for her.

The History Of Jazz Music
Music has been an integral part of America's history, and a vital factor in how the American people
have used it to change the world, as well as themselves. From the sorrow– filled cotton fields were
gospel music was birthed from the mouths of slaves, to the roaring jazz bands of the Harlem
Renaissance, into the amped up electrical guitars of modern day punk rock, music has shaped the
nation. With so much rich history in the United States of America, we are left to wonder how so
many incredible types of music came to be.
1916 was the start of a revolutionary time in jazz music. The Great Migration, a mass movement of
Southern African Americans who moved into the north mostly to the larger cities like New York.

''This music does weird things to people's brains,'' Mr. Seim, the founder of The Advantage, said of
Nintendo video game music. (Weingarten) The original Nintendo Entertainment System brought to
the United States in 1985, is still one of the best–selling home video consoles ever. With its creation,
arcade games could now be played in one's home and with the technological advances it also carried
video game music beyond the primitive bleeps and blips of arcade systems. In 1985, the debut of the
NES or Nintendo Entertainment System with only five audio output channels, brought actual
synthesized music, called eight–bit music, to video games. (Payne) Unbeknownst to Nintendo,
however, those technological hindrances would eventually establish a trademark sound, lead to a
Nintendo Rock band named the Advantage, who released one of the most popular albums of the
genre.
In order to understand Nintendo Rock, one must take a brief glance at the history of Nintendo game
music. Drawing from the set–up of a normal rock band, with a drummer, two guitarists, and a
bassist, the NES' sonic toolkit had a white noise channel, two pulse waves, and a triangle wave.

Rock Music History
Rock music has been very popular for years. Now–a–day's rock has blended in with the other types
of popular music like pop, country and rap. However, none of these other types of music seemed to
have as big an impact on people that rock did. Rock 'n roll, basically controlled the most of the
twentieth century, with an entire era of children, teens and young adults to follow. But, where did
rock come from? What is rock music, what started it? How did parents react? Rock n roll original
started along the Mississippi River Valley (image right, Dennison). The music spread up and down
the river, along the railroads and highways that ran near the river (Allen). It also traveled through
Tennessee, Illinois, Cumberland and the Missouri rivers also known as the tributaries (Allen). The

It has to do with the beats, melody, elements and rhythm that make up the music. Those are the
things that separate music from noise. Though, if you listen to early rock like "Maybellene" by
Chuck Berry and "What a Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong it is a little more clearly. When it
comes to rock and jazz in specific; they are influenced by different properties around them. Even
though jazz and rock are inspired by different things; they are still more alike than to any other type
of music. However, they share one distinct difference. In jazz, it uses a shuffle rhythm and rock does
not (Kajanova 13). "What that means is that the same rhythmic values in rock are used in subtle
shifts and digressions to enhance the relax feel of the music; along with an essence and easiness,
that's why jazz and rock are different" (Kajanova 13). Musical ideas of rock and jazz came from
components that came from European folk and stylized dances that were changed into country
music. From there it was changed into rhythm and blues and jazz, and lastly it was imported into

Essay on European Music History
Questions to Consider: Europe
1. How is the history of European and Arabic cultural contact reveal through musical characteristics
in places such as Spain and Bulgaria?
In Spain, the authentic flamenco had just a singer. It had a strained type of timbre and melisma was
used a lot. It shows that there was Arabic influence because they also had that type of style. And
because they also used a guitar as accompaniment, it showed there was European influence because
they liked harmony. Bulgarian music also had harmonies but with voices. This was a European
characteristic. Their music is very colorful and lively and I think that was Arabic influence.
2. What defines a music as "classical" as opposed to "folk" in the European context? How ... Show

An easy to play folk instrument is the hurdy gurdy. In the text it even says it's "foolproof". To play
it, you just have to turn a crank and press some keys.
A folk instrument needing more advanced techniques is the uilleann. It's from Ireland and it is the
more complex type of bagpipes in the world. It is complicating because it requires a lot of
coordination. A player has to use both of his arms and hands at the same time.
5. How are music and musical instruments used to express national identity in Europe?
I think the music and musical instruments expresses national identity in Europe because there are
different styles of music according to where they are from in Europe. And different countries have
different types of instruments. For example the bagpipes in Scotland. Many people recognize music
with pipes to be from Scotland or Ireland. Spain has flamenco and Russia has their balalaika. They
all express their nationality and where they are from. The countries in Europe have different types of
musical styles that are distinct to their own country and culture.
6. Is language a reliable demarcation of musical style in Europe? Why or why not?
I don't think language is a reliable separation of musical style in Europe because even if people from
different countries speak the same languages, they might have different types of styles. For example,
Ireland and Scotland are grouped together but their music is a bit different. They both play

Surf Music History
Surf music is a subgenre of rock music associated with surf culture. It was most popular between
1962 and 1964 and was found particularly in Southern California. Surf rock began in the early
1960s as instrumental dance music. The sound was largely attributed to electric guitars which were
particularly characterized by the extensive use of a "wet" spring reverb which was thought to sound
like waves. Guitarists also began to make use of the vibrato arm on their guitar to bend the pitch of
notes downward which they used to create electronic tremolo effects with their rapid, alternating
tremolo picking style. The electric bass was also very prominent in the sound of surf music. Surf
rock existed in two major forms.
The first form is instrumental surf rock. This style was first launched into popularity by Dick Dale
and the Del–Tones with their song, "Let's Go Trippin'." Dick Dale brought Middle Eastern and
Mexican influences to the typical rock and roll style. In addition, he used a reverb–drenched electric
guitar which was played to evoke the sounds of crashing waves. This style inspired many artists to
take up the approach. The second major form in this genre is vocal ... Show more content on

Music and Painting
During the study of 20th–century Western music history in this class, I found out there are may
same movements of art and music. I took 20th century Art history as well so there is always the
comparison of them in my mind. Music and art appear to be two different art forms. Music is both
auditory art, but also an art of time and movement. Music express musicians' feelings through
sound, it will create images in the mind of the viewer for them to have a variety of feelings, and to
elicit in the viewer emotional resonance. Painting is a visual art, space art. It is static. Painters use
lines, shades and other forms to sketched out some figurative or abstract pattern. It provide visually
to the viewer a strong impression and cause them reflect a variety of emotions, resulting in aesthetic
stimulation. Music and painting each is done through a different medium with different means of
artistic expression. They both convey people the author's expression of the content and emotion.
Many artists themselves are both musicians and painters, such as Kandinsky, Schoenberg, Leonardo
da Vinci and extra. One of the great examples is Wassily Kandinsky. He is one of the representatives
of Russian expressionism painter. He also was a man versed in music. He is a friend of expressionist
music composer, Schoenberg. By listening to Schoenberg 's works, he felt "like a recklessly in front

The History Of Western Music
The History of Western Music
Throughout history all cultures have been influenced by music. Before the Baroque era in music
there were many forms of western music. Most of this music was monophonic, sung in chant used
mostly for religious purposes. During the previous millennia most music was sung in chant form
with very little accompaniment, save a harp or a violin. In these times music was a simple art, sung
by the people to praise the Lord. Eventually polyphonic music developed, first starting as
monophonic chant sung in thirds and fifths, and later contrapuntal music was created. During this
time the music notation system was standardized, originally a modified Greek system; music
notation evolved into the notation that is used today. Having the use of music notation set the
foundation for Baroque music and for all music after that.
In the late sixteenth century and early seventeenth century the Baroque style of music started in
Italy. Italy, where the renaissance started, was able to create a new type of music rich in feeling, but
less intricate than much of the previous renaissance music that was centered towards the north
(France and the area now occupied by the Netherlands). New ideas, like interplay between the
various instruments in an orchestra, became prevalent, unlike the monophonic music of previous
years. As new instruments were incorporated into orchestras and compositions became increasingly
more instrumental interplay had an increasing new role in the new

and break down barriers, but above all music is entertaining. There are various forms of music but
not many have as rich a history as gospel music. The importance of gospel music has been relevant
in American music for more than a century and its importance to society is still relevant to this day
(See Appendix A). Gospel music helped slaves escape to freedom and paved the way for other styles
of music. It promotes a spirit of hope and provided an outlet to worship God. So how exactly has
Gospel music impacted today's society? Music has been relevant in Christianity since its beginnings.

Spirituals were not only "sung to keep spirits up" (Thompson 9), but were used as coded messages
to give directions for where to go or how to proceed to freedom in the North. The slave owners
believed that the slaves were happy because they sang church songs and they praised God but little
did they know, that the slaves were secretly communicating. For instance, during the Underground
Railroad, songs like "Follow the Drinkin' Gourd,' 'Wade in the Water,' and 'Swing Low, Sweet
Chariot,' all directly refer to secret code about using the Underground Railroad." As many as
100,000 slaves escaped by means of this method (Thompson 9).
When President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation in 1862, over twenty million
Americans, both black and white moved out of the southern United States. This move as stated by

What is chamber music?
It is ensemble instrumental music for up to about ten performers with typically one performer to a
part.
Since circa 1450, there has been instrumental music designed for private playing. These pieces used
many instruments and (in Germany) it was common that the folk songs would contain 2–3
countermelodies to expand and elaborate the whole, and to arrange the outcome for groups of
instruments. Although the pieces were never written for particular instruments, we can, through
art/paintings, reasonably guess that the viol was a predominant early chamber music instrument.

Parallel to the developments that led from the vocal chanson, in France, to the instrumental canzona,
primarily in Italy, was the development of the dance suite. Early sixteenth–century dance tunes in all
countries of Western Europe usually had appeared in pairs: one was slow, stately in mood and in
duple metre (i.e., with two beats to the bar); the other fast, lively in mood, usually in triple metre,
and often melodically similar to the first. Through much of the sixteenth century, composers in the
several countries sought to expand the dance pair into a unified dance suite. Suites based on
variations of one movement appeared in England; suites in which each of four dances had its own
rhythmic character, melodically based on the first dance, were written in Germany; sets of dances
with no internal relationships to each other were common in Italy. The most influential steps were
taken in France by composers for the lute or the clavecin (harpsichord). Consisting essentially of
four dance forms that were then popular – the allemande, courante, sarabande, and gigue – the suites
they composed were based on contrasting tempos, metres, and rhythmic patterns. The French
version of the dance suite became the prototype for later chamber–music forms.
It was not until the middle of the seventeenth century that two types of composition –

The History Of 1960s Music In The 1960s
Music in 1960s
Music has been a part of the human race for as long as it has been existing. Its various forms and
genres categorizes and divides the music country wise, ranging from initially Folk music as the
base, moving on to Country music as a regions identity. The music gained enormous name and fame
because of its hypnotizing effect on the singer and the listener. From Rock n Roll, evolving towards
British invasion, music in 1960's played a major role in evolution of UK.This evolution was brought
up by the introduction of rock and roll, collaborating different races and changing the lifestyle thus
transforming UK from a conservative country into the capital of the world.
Before rock and roll hit the Great Britain, blues and jazz were the genres of the era. Singers from
various nations like the US or Africa, started working solo or as bands and increased the impact of
music on people'slive. Before the 50's, various controversies arose regarding the style of Jazz and
Blues, and their effect on the local residents and "The "British Invasion" also began around 1963
with the arrival of The Beatles on the music scene and the type of rabid fandom that followed them

From 1750 to 1820,musicians moved away from the heavily ornamented styles of the Baroque age

aristocracies were replacing monarchs and the church as patrons of music, and were demanding an

fashioned in the forms of entertaining serenades and divertimenti.
At this time the Austrian capital of Vienna became the musical center of Europe, and works of the

The History Of Music Education Essay
The History of Music Education in the Americas
The history of our schools is told beginning with the founding of our nation, moving through the
common school movement, the arguments of the progressive era, and leading up to all of the
modern acts made in the 21st century. Music education is a factor in the public schools, and it is
rarely discussed as part of the history of our schools. Music education has been a part of our schools
since the beginning and continues to better our students to this day.
The Introduction of the School in Early Society
Thomas Jefferson
Thomas Jefferson was one of the first to push for an education system in the Amemricas with his
ideas that schooling would lead to a "more general diffusion of knowledge". He told these ideas to
the Virginia legislature, and though they did not take hold, they laid the groundwork for Catherine
Beecher, and Horace Mann. In his plans for schools, he was open to the arts in education. This was
because he thought that art and music education were a gentleman's education. In his daily life,
Jefferson would take breaks from work to play music on his violin. He was an entertainer, and a
skilled musician. Music had found its way into the heart of one of the great framers of education.
Early Immigrants There was an early push for music education by a group of immigrants known as
Moravians. This Slavic influence brought many contributions in almost every avenue of American
culture but primarily introduced rich vocal and

The History Of Rap Music
This paper will trace the history of rap music (also known as hip–hop). The origins of this music are
found in the experiences of urban African Americans during the 1970s. One of the most unique
elements of rap music is its vocal style. In 1979, the record "Rapper's Delight" by the Sugar Hill
Gang defined this style with its use of "speedy staccato word play and verbal dexterity" (Perkins
11). However, as pointed out by one of rap's early leaders, Afrika Bambaataa, the true roots of this
vocal style are found in the previous developments of African American culture. These
developments include not only the traditional musical and storytelling styles brought over from
Africa, but also such things as the style of speech used by the civil rights leader Malcolm X.
Summing up Bambaataa's views on the roots of rap, Perkins says: "The rap tradition has been
nurtured on the accumulated and residual forms of African and African American music, verbal art,
and personal style as well as the constant process of self–innovation within each of these elements"
(5). In addition to its unique vocal style, rap music is also characterized by its innovative approach
to creating a musical background for the lyrics. This musical style was developed in New York City
during the 1970s by various DJ's (disc jockeys) such as Kool Herc, Kurtis Blow, and Grandmaster
Caz. In particular, many people credit the New Yorker Grandmaster Flash with the important
innovation of creating a rhythmic beat

Evolution of the CD After a couple of "failed" attempts of making a device that could be used for
mass sharing of music in the late 1800s, an immigrant from Germany had finally come up with an
idea that would change everything. Chichester Bell (Alexander Graham Bell's cousin) and Thomas
Edison's idea to record sounds on round cylinders was a good idea except for the sound quality and
general effort that was required to make and replicate sound. The Phonograph was one of the earliest
attempts at recording devices. Thomas A. Edison wanted to create this device in order to assist with
business interactions. He originally used foil to record sounds, but this wasn't the best medium. You
could only play sounds once and the quality wasn't the greatest. This is when wax cylinders came
into play. It was eventually decided that the wax cylinder wasn't strong enough to record something
permanently. Next followed the graphophone. This invention by Bell fixed the replay problem, but
mass production of music would've been impossible because of the sheer amount of work involved
in recording each cylinder separately (Bells). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His gramophone didn't record on cylinders. This was the creation of the record. The first records
were made of blackened glass but after some trials Berliner arrived at the idea of zinc. The disc
would be covered in a mixture of cold gas and beeswax before the grooves were etched into the
surface. These zinc records were eventually replaced with plastic. The earliest gramophone had to
be cranked by hand in order for it to work but the use of spring motors changed that. This model was
the best that could be made at this time and quickly changed the act of recording music

This is not the only sighting of school expansions. In 1832, the Boston Academy of Music was

music and related theory. This school is one school that can be shown that showed the improvement
from one century to the next. This school shows the expansion from simple fundamentals and just
reading music to the study of music. One of the founders of this school served a great role at this
time. His name was Lowell Mason. Around this time he was the leader of American church music.
He composed over 1600 hymns. Along with this he wrote and published a text titled, Manuel of
Instruction. This Text started to be adopted out in places outside of the academy and started to adopt
the text for their classrooms. Because of this text, Mason was then allowed to formally teach music
to students at the Hawes school. This moment marks the start of music education in American public
schools. It became so successful that the local school committee push for music education to be
included as part of the syllabus. This is the first time that this had been seen. Eventually as years
past and it became more refined; it was added in the school's curriculum for all ages of students.
This success in Boston showed as a standard that other school districts could look at and look up to.

saw the first independent recording studio built in Nashville, titled 'The Castle Recording company'
and was created by a pair of enterprising radio engineers from WSM in Nashville, (Levy 2000, 22–

famed Quonset hut and was soon followed by a rush of producers, publishers and performers in the
late 50s to early 60s converting old houses into studios and offices. This central hub of music
industry development in downtown Nashville would form what would come to be known as 'Music

One of the first major changes that Gordy made was the adaptation to change the sound to match the
psychedelia era that was going on. The psychedelia era began with the gathering of people around
the new California law to outlaw the use of LSD. Gordy would take advantage of this by changing
the Motown sound to reflect this sound by using guitar distortion, made the lyrics more serious, and
invested in having more elaborate productions. Another change that Gordy would make to keep the
Motown sound relevant was by moving the main office out of Detroit and expanding areas. This was
important because it allowed the Motown sound to be heard by larger areas and it also attracted new
population by having branch offices in cities like Los Angeles and New York. This would help the
goal of Motown to get black music into the mainstream radio. Also signing the Jackson 5 at this
time allowed for the success of this expansion strategy that Gordy and Motown were trying to make
successful. Finally Gordy would sign Rare Earth who were a white rock band. By signing this rock
band Gordy wanted them to become a crossover over success by singing the song "Get Ready" by
the temptations. All of these things put together allowed for the success of the Motown sound to

A Brief History of Guitar Music and Composers
Luis Milan lived from 1500 to 1561 in Valencia, Spain. He was a Spanish renaissance composer
who was the first composer to write and publish music for the vihuela.
In 1536, Milan published a book entitled Libro de Música de Vihuela de Mano Intitulado de
Maestro. This book is his most famous, and is the first book in history that consisted of vihuela
music. It included many villancicos, pavanas, and over 40 fantasias. It also included vocal pieces
with accompaniment provided by the vihuela. It was organized so that the harder pieces were
towards the end of the book and the easier ones were first. It also contained alternate passages in
some of the pieces for more advanced players.
Milan wrote various other books besides the one mentioned before. The first book that he wrote was
called El Juego de Mandar. It was published in 1535 and was a parlor game book that also included
music in it. His last written publication, El Cortesano, was written in 1561. It did not include any
music but instead was a book that described the typical life of a professional musician at the time
that he was working for the court, which was before 1538.
Not much is known about Milan's life, except that he lived in Valencia for the majority of his life
and worked for the ducal court up until the time he began to publish music. He dedicated his book of
vihuela music to King John III of Portugal, which could mean that he visited or lived in Portugal for
a while.

The History of Music Styles
Introduction:
A study of the history of music styles brings to the fore two distinct periods, Baroque and Classical.
The purpose of this essay is to provide a comparison between the two musical eras through the
exploration of two different composers and their works, namely Antonio Vivaldi and his Four
Seasons 'Spring' in the maximized Baroque era and the minimalist approaches of Wolfgang
Amadeus Mozart's Symphony. Moreover this essay will review the unique social, cultural,
technological an musical elements of each period to determine the ways in which these factors
influenced the works and styles of their respective composers.

Baroque
The social characteristics of an era are strongly influential to the attitudes that composers had
towards composing their works and the approaches that they took when doing so. **Maybe find a

period, composers were perceived as inferiors and treated like servants by the aristocrats, thus being
expected to cater to their musical whims, often at a moment's notice. Musical directors were paid
generously, however this came with a price. They were held responsible for a vast variety of tasks,
including not only the composition of music but also the maintenance of instruments and music
library, overseeing performances and disciplining musicians. Court musicians often earned more and

renaissance, Europe went through many changes politically, socially, and psychologically. Most of
this change was due to the reformation of the church, and the humanist movement. The humanist
movement focuses on revisiting Greek ideas, and the church supported these thinkers, artists, and

was also the law. Different churches wanted to attract new patrons, so they tried to impress others
through the use of art and music, and no longer just their words. The hundred year 's war brought
about many conflicts between nations, which cause the exchange of land through politics and
diplomacy. This caused a spread of different works of tradition, religion, music, and art. The short
reign of King Henry VIII 's son, King Edward VI is a great example of this, when he brought
Protestantism to England, and the country has been switching between Catholicism and

own different beliefs, art, and music. During this time was also the discovery of the new world, and

  • 5. Music Is A Magical Piece Of History Music is a magical piece of history, and has changed throughout history with the changing of generations. As culture changes music changes as well. Artists have found a way to use music, art, and fashion throughout history as a way to convey feelings of love, sadness, frustration, and death. Musicians find a way to move their listeners with the sounds they hear. With every rise and fall of a note and change in melody or tempo, listeners find themselves holding their breath or possibly wiping away tears. Aaron Copland is a man who has truly done just that. His love for music started when he was very young when his sister taught him how to play piano (Encyclopedia). From that point on, his thirst and passion for music grew. At the age when most boys are outside playing, getting dirty Copland decided he would become a composer. Attending Boy's High School he began to study music (Encyclopedia). In 1921, Copland moved to France to further study music at the American Conservatory in Fontainebleau. It is there he would experience the different style of European music. Schoenberg and Stravinsky had always inspired him, and his stay in Paris gave him the opportunity to enhance his love and understanding of their music. When Copland returned to America he wrote his first major piece of music named simply the Symphony for Organ and Orchestra. This was just the beginning of Copland's early writings. He wanted to experiment with music in his compositions. Copland began to blend music ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Music History and Its Influence on America Music History And Its Influence On America Rodriguez Pg. 1 Seven o' clock strikes on my alarm clock, causing it to ring its silver bells, rudely jolting me back to reality from another wonderful dream. Groggily, I manage to carry my body to the shower, still upset that i won't be able to find out if I had kissed that cute girl or not, and still wondering who the man in the peacoat was that was following us around on our date. Thirty minutes later, I've gathered my books, I've dressed myself, I've eaten, and I'm on my way out the door to my car. I'm still tired and still upset about the deleted scene from my dream. I put the key into the ignition, and i immediately feel better as My Love by Justin ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Emphasis on people's rights and the ability to shape the environment was sought out. The American and the French Revolution were momentous events during this period. People's view of the world and their relationship to it began to go through major change. Music was viewed as an innocent luxury, and composers had to react to an increased demand for songs. Many people started to express their emotions in their songs. ( Essentials of Music.) The Romantic Era (1825–1900) was formed by a clearer understanding of the world and a human's place in it, which changed the way people thought of everything and everyone. Many parts of Europe tried to free themselves from its foreign rulers. Music started to tell stories, represent people, express ideas of philosophy, and to highlight national identities. Composers

European music is where the search for American music's beginnings would be found. Louis Charles Elson, author of The History of American Music states that when the Pilgrims and English settlers found their destination ( New England), they had their religious songs that they sang, but made no attempts to change them. • 14. Calypso Music History You've probably heard the song, "Under the sea" from the Disney movie, "The Little Mermaid". Or, maybe you've heard the song "Day–O", also known as the "banana boat song". Well, did you know that these songs are examples of Calypso music? In this report, I will be explaining, where it came from, what it is, and facts and information. Calypso music originated in Venezuela, Trinidad, and Tobago during the start of the 20th century. It was traced back to West African Kaiso and the arrival of the French planters and their slaves in the 1800s. An African slave named Gros Jean is thought to be the first Calypsonian, or someone who makes Calypso music. Over the last century Calypso music has been becoming well known by not only the Carribean, but around the world. 1914 was a huge year for Calypso music, because this was when the first Calypso recording was made by the Victor Gramophone Company of New York. • 26. The Effects Of Music On Music Throughout History Toby J. Hess Professor Paschke Humanities 220 April 15, 2015 Technology: The Effects on Music throughout History Music and technology aid one another. In a way a person can capture music they love through technology and then the electronic companies flourish due to the sale and popularity of these electronic devices. If a person wants to listen to music they can turn on a stereo or TV, choose a CD or DVD to play, or listen to a songs downloaded in ITunes. All of these devices are proof to show how technology is used to record, play, and change the way music is heard. A look through history will show how far society has come in music alone. The development of technology has changed the way the music industry operates and the way society hears and purchases music today. It started off with humming, then singing. People sang in church choirs, in the living room, or on a stage. Music can be heard by vocals or by the melodic tune of instruments. People paid to go to symphonies and listen to composers perform their masterpieces. Family gathered around the piano, or at a church to listen to music on the holidays. Music was not portable, nor was it recordable. According to the novel, Looking Backward in 1888, the philosophy was that technology was the "solution to the ills plaguing modern life and the means to achieve a perfect society" (Katz, 51). Meaning that life was boring and technology was the answer to bettering and changing society. In 1877, Thomas Edison invented the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Changes in the music industry coupled with new computer technology have made it much easier for people without a lot of money to compose, produce, and distribute their creation. In order to get a better understanding of the music industry in comparison to 2014, one has to look at its history. There were many things that happened from the 1980's onward, and they brought on a significant impact towards the music industry. Development in computer technology has also made a big impression on music. Many things within these fields have enabled artists to connect with their fans in a way they couldn't before, and on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There were many changes in the business of music records from the 1980s onward. For example, the Telecommunications Act of 1996 law was passed. This enabled a free–for–all in for the record companies and granted them the ability to compete with anyone in the market. What ended up happening was the companies bought each other left and right until there were 5 or 6 big companies that ran everything. The record industry controlled music production, distribution, and airplay on the radio. Radio started out on the AM frequencies, then later the FM higher fidelity stations. The only way to get music through to the masses feasibly was to go through the highly selective record companies because they were the only ones who could mass produce music. To distribute, first they sold music on gramophone records, an early distribution medium made of processed shellac from the lac bug. Then they moved on to track tapes, vinyl records, compact cassettes, and eventually CDs. Emerging digital Era: 1980's And Beyond: Gradually after this event, the medium for music had changed, from various types of analog grooved discs, to various types of magnetic tape–based reels and cartridges, to compact discs, or CDs, to digital downloads. An early revolution in music portability was created by a device called the Walkman cassette player. This device was based on a similarly designed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 34. Music Throughout History Throughout history people listened to music and used it for various different things. In the earliest of times music was used to help emphasize story telling(Young 11). As centuries went on music became more prominent in everyday things and eventually was used for social occasions like festivals and weddings(Young 82). Today we use music for everything from recreational to rehabilitating people. We use music to express ourselves and say things we don't know how to say. Music is an outlet for people now–a–days. What people don't realize is that music is basically a medicine. It helps us rehabilitate people, calm them down, keep our bodies in rhythm, and it is used to help people with disabilities function better in society. The only thing is is that people don't know how to properly use music to help themselves and others. But music is beneficial to people's health! More than 5,000 musical therapists work in hospitals, schools, rehabs, nursing homes, prisons, and at people's homes in the United States today and more than half of them are working with the mentally ill, disabled, or the elderly(Campbell 126). As early as the 19th and early 20th centuries Americans have been using music for medicinal reasons(Campbell 121). In early 1899 James L. Corning conducted the first controlled study using music to treat his patients(Campbell 122). Using the musical styles of Wagner and other Romantic composers he concluded their styles helped reduce the morbid thoughts of the patients and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Evaluating an Evaluation In the article "EMP: Music History or Music Trivia?", Jackie Wyngaard gives her point of view of the Experience Music Project (EMP), an artistic installation in Seattle (WA), that holds information and memorabilia about the various music movements through the American history. Based on what she believes that a music museum should be, she claims that the space is a failure. That is the first important element of an essay: an idea or point of view over something that the author judges important. The purpose of an essay is to inform, clearly, what that idea is, bringing arguments that will support that claim. And the author does that by bringing evidences of what a museum should be for her. From the sorrow– filled cotton fields were gospel music was birthed from the mouths of slaves, to the roaring jazz bands of the Harlem Renaissance, into the amped up electrical guitars of modern day punk rock, music has shaped the nation. With so much rich history in the United States of America, we are left to wonder how so many incredible types of music came to be. 1916 was the start of a revolutionary time in jazz music. With its creation, arcade games could now be played in one's home and with the technological advances it also carried video game music beyond the primitive bleeps and blips of arcade systems. In 1985, the debut of the NES or Nintendo Entertainment System with only five audio output channels, brought actual synthesized music, called eight–bit music, to video games. (Payne) Unbeknownst to Nintendo, however, those technological hindrances would eventually establish a trademark sound, lead to a Nintendo Rock band named the Advantage, who released one of the most popular albums of the genre. In order to understand Nintendo Rock, one must take a brief glance at the history of Nintendo game music. Drawing from the set–up of a normal rock band, with a drummer, two guitarists, and a bassist, the NES' sonic toolkit had a white noise channel, two pulse waves, and a triangle wave. While lush instrumentation could not be attained with such a limiting palette, aspiring composers like Koji ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, none of these other types of music seemed to have as big an impact on people that rock did. Rock 'n roll, basically controlled the most of the twentieth century, with an entire era of children, teens and young adults to follow. But, where did rock come from? What is rock music, what started it? How did parents react? Rock n roll original started along the Mississippi River Valley (image right, Dennison). The music spread up and down the river, along the railroads and highways that ran near the river (Allen). It also traveled through Tennessee, Illinois, Cumberland and the Missouri rivers also known as the tributaries (Allen). The reason ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When it comes to rock and jazz in specific; they are influenced by different properties around them. Even though jazz and rock are inspired by different things; they are still more alike than to any other type of music. However, they share one distinct difference. In jazz, it uses a shuffle rhythm and rock does not (Kajanova 13). "What that means is that the same rhythmic values in rock are used in subtle shifts and digressions to enhance the relax feel of the music; along with an essence and easiness, that's why jazz and rock are different" (Kajanova 13). How is the history of European and Arabic cultural contact reveal through musical characteristics in places such as Spain and Bulgaria? In Spain, the authentic flamenco had just a singer. It had a strained type of timbre and melisma was used a lot. It shows that there was Arabic influence because they also had that type of style. And because they also used a guitar as accompaniment, it showed there was European influence because they liked harmony. Bulgarian music also had harmonies but with voices. This was a European characteristic. Their music is very colorful and lively and I think that was Arabic influence. 2. What defines a music as "classical" as opposed to "folk" in the European context? To play it, you just have to turn a crank and press some keys. A folk instrument needing more advanced techniques is the uilleann. It's from Ireland and it is the more complex type of bagpipes in the world. It is complicating because it requires a lot of coordination. A player has to use both of his arms and hands at the same time. 5. How are music and musical instruments used to express national identity in Europe? I think the music and musical instruments expresses national identity in Europe because there are different styles of music according to where they are from in Europe. And different countries have different types of instruments. For example the bagpipes in Scotland. Many people recognize music with pipes to be from Scotland or Ireland. Spain has flamenco and Russia has their balalaika. They all express their nationality and where they are from. The countries in Europe have different types of musical styles that are distinct to their own country and culture. 6. Is language a reliable demarcation of musical style in Europe? Why or why not? I don't think language is a reliable separation of musical style in Europe because even if people from different countries speak the same languages, they might have different types of styles. • 58. Surf Music History Surf music is a subgenre of rock music associated with surf culture. It was most popular between 1962 and 1964 and was found particularly in Southern California. Surf rock began in the early 1960s as instrumental dance music. The sound was largely attributed to electric guitars which were particularly characterized by the extensive use of a "wet" spring reverb which was thought to sound like waves. Guitarists also began to make use of the vibrato arm on their guitar to bend the pitch of notes downward which they used to create electronic tremolo effects with their rapid, alternating tremolo picking style. The electric bass was also very prominent in the sound of surf music. Surf rock existed in two major forms. The first form is instrumental surf rock. This style was first launched into popularity by Dick Dale and the Del–Tones with their song, "Let's Go Trippin'." Dick Dale brought Middle Eastern and Mexican influences to the typical rock and roll style. In addition, he used a reverb–drenched electric guitar which was played to evoke the sounds of crashing waves. This style inspired many artists to take up the approach. Music And Painting From 20th Century Western Music History Yaojun Song Mus114 Sam Music and Painting During the study of 20th–century Western music history in this class, I found out there are may same movements of art and music. I took 20th century Art history as well so there is always the comparison of them in my mind. Music and art appear to be two different art forms. Music is both auditory art, but also an art of time and movement. Music express musicians' feelings through sound, it will create images in the mind of the viewer for them to have a variety of feelings, and to elicit in the viewer emotional resonance. Painting is a visual art, space art. It is static. Painters use lines, shades and other forms to sketched out some figurative or abstract pattern. It provide visually to the viewer a strong impression and cause them reflect a variety of emotions, resulting in aesthetic stimulation. Music and painting each is done through a different medium with different means of artistic expression. They both convey people the author's expression of the content and emotion. Many artists themselves are both musicians and painters, such as Kandinsky, Schoenberg, Leonardo da Vinci and extra. One of the great examples is Wassily Kandinsky. He is one of the representatives of Russian expressionism painter. He also was a man versed in music. He is a friend of expressionist music composer, Schoenberg. • 66. The History Of Western Music The History of Western Music Throughout history all cultures have been influenced by music. Before the Baroque era in music there were many forms of western music. Most of this music was monophonic, sung in chant used mostly for religious purposes. During the previous millennia most music was sung in chant form with very little accompaniment, save a harp or a violin. In these times music was a simple art, sung by the people to praise the Lord. Eventually polyphonic music developed, first starting as monophonic chant sung in thirds and fifths, and later contrapuntal music was created. During this time the music notation system was standardized, originally a modified Greek system; music notation evolved into the notation that is used today. Having the use of music notation set the foundation for Baroque music and for all music after that. In the late sixteenth century and early seventeenth century the Baroque style of music started in Italy. Italy, where the renaissance started, was able to create a new type of music rich in feeling, but less intricate than much of the previous renaissance music that was centered towards the north (France and the area now occupied by the Netherlands). New ideas, like interplay between the various instruments in an orchestra, became prevalent, unlike the monophonic music of previous years. The slave owners believed that the slaves were happy because they sang church songs and they praised God but little did they know, that the slaves were secretly communicating. For instance, during the Underground Railroad, songs like "Follow the Drinkin' Gourd,' 'Wade in the Water,' and 'Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,' all directly refer to secret code about using the Underground Railroad." As many as 100,000 slaves escaped by means of this method (Thompson 9). Since circa 1450, there has been instrumental music designed for private playing. Parallel to the developments that led from the vocal chanson, in France, to the instrumental canzona, primarily in Italy, was the development of the dance suite. Early sixteenth–century dance tunes in all countries of Western Europe usually had appeared in pairs: one was slow, stately in mood and in duple metre (i.e., with two beats to the bar); the other fast, lively in mood, usually in triple metre, and often melodically similar to the first. Through much of the sixteenth century, composers in the several countries sought to expand the dance pair into a unified dance suite. Suites based on variations of one movement appeared in England; suites in which each of four dances had its own rhythmic character, melodically based on the first dance, were written in Germany; sets of dances with no internal relationships to each other were common in Italy. The most influential steps were taken in France by composers for the lute or the clavecin (harpsichord). Consisting essentially of four dance forms that were then popular – the allemande, courante, sarabande, and gigue – the suites they composed were based on contrasting tempos, metres, and rhythmic patterns. The History Of Music Education Essay The History of Music Education in the Americas The history of our schools is told beginning with the founding of our nation, moving through the common school movement, the arguments of the progressive era, and leading up to all of the modern acts made in the 21st century. Music education is a factor in the public schools, and it is rarely discussed as part of the history of our schools. Music education has been a part of our schools since the beginning and continues to better our students to this day. The Introduction of the School in Early Society Thomas Jefferson Thomas Jefferson was one of the first to push for an education system in the Amemricas with his ideas that schooling would lead to a "more general diffusion of knowledge". He told these ideas to the Virginia legislature, and though they did not take hold, they laid the groundwork for Catherine Beecher, and Horace Mann. In his plans for schools, he was open to the arts in education. This was because he thought that art and music education were a gentleman's education. In his daily life, Jefferson would take breaks from work to play music on his violin. He was an entertainer, and a skilled musician. The origins of this music are found in the experiences of urban African Americans during the 1970s. One of the most unique elements of rap music is its vocal style. In 1979, the record "Rapper's Delight" by the Sugar Hill Gang defined this style with its use of "speedy staccato word play and verbal dexterity" (Perkins 11). However, as pointed out by one of rap's early leaders, Afrika Bambaataa, the true roots of this vocal style are found in the previous developments of African American culture. These developments include not only the traditional musical and storytelling styles brought over from Africa, but also such things as the style of speech used by the civil rights leader Malcolm X. Summing up Bambaataa's views on the roots of rap, Perkins says: "The rap tradition has been nurtured on the accumulated and residual forms of African and African American music, verbal art, and personal style as well as the constant process of self–innovation within each of these elements" (5). In addition to its unique vocal style, rap music is also characterized by its innovative approach to creating a musical background for the lyrics. This musical style was developed in New York City during the 1970s by various DJ's (disc jockeys) such as Kool Herc, Kurtis Blow, and Grandmaster Caz. Chichester Bell (Alexander Graham Bell's cousin) and Thomas Edison's idea to record sounds on round cylinders was a good idea except for the sound quality and general effort that was required to make and replicate sound. The Phonograph was one of the earliest attempts at recording devices. Thomas A. Edison wanted to create this device in order to assist with business interactions. He originally used foil to record sounds, but this wasn't the best medium. You could only play sounds once and the quality wasn't the greatest. This is when wax cylinders came into play. It was eventually decided that the wax cylinder wasn't strong enough to record something permanently. Next followed the graphophone. This invention by Bell fixed the replay problem, but mass production of music would've been impossible because of the sheer amount of work involved in recording each cylinder separately (Bells). ... One of the first major changes that Gordy made was the adaptation to change the sound to match the psychedelia era that was going on. The psychedelia era began with the gathering of people around the new California law to outlaw the use of LSD. Gordy would take advantage of this by changing the Motown sound to reflect this sound by using guitar distortion, made the lyrics more serious, and invested in having more elaborate productions. Another change that Gordy would make to keep the Motown sound relevant was by moving the main office out of Detroit and expanding areas. This was important because it allowed the Motown sound to be heard by larger areas and it also attracted new population by having branch offices in cities like Los Angeles and New York. This would help the goal of Motown to get black music into the mainstream radio. Also signing the Jackson 5 at this time allowed for the success of this expansion strategy that Gordy and Motown were trying to make successful. Finally Gordy would sign Rare Earth who were a white rock band. By signing this rock band Gordy wanted them to become a crossover over success by singing the song "Get Ready" by the temptations. He was a Spanish renaissance composer who was the first composer to write and publish music for the vihuela. In 1536, Milan published a book entitled Libro de Música de Vihuela de Mano Intitulado de Maestro. This book is his most famous, and is the first book in history that consisted of vihuela music. It included many villancicos, pavanas, and over 40 fantasias. It also included vocal pieces with accompaniment provided by the vihuela. It was organized so that the harder pieces were towards the end of the book and the easier ones were first. It also contained alternate passages in some of the pieces for more advanced players. Milan wrote various other books besides the one mentioned before. The first book that he wrote was called El Juego de Mandar. It was published in 1535 and was a parlor game book that also included music in it. His last written publication, El Cortesano, was written in 1561. It did not include any music but instead was a book that described the typical life of a professional musician at the time that he was working for the court, which was before 1538. Not much is known about Milan's life, except that he lived in Valencia for the majority of his life and worked for the ducal court up until the time he began to publish music. He dedicated his book of vihuela music to King John III of Portugal, which could mean that he visited or lived in Portugal for a while. Milan was not only ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

His sheer persistence as a figure in the literature has had a tendency to naturalize his position in the genealogy of cinema, making it difficult to assess the true nature and extent of his influence. Wagner is cited as a model (or the model) for film–music composers and performers to follow, and concepts such as the Gesamtkunstwerk, unendliche Melodie, and the Leitmotiv circulate widely, frequently detached from Wagner's name and from his own theoretical treatment of them. Occasionally his influence is decried; more commonly, however, film music practitioners have received criticism for not being Wagnerian enough. In short, Wagner's relevance is taken for granted, but the paths through which his influence was passed down to film are unclear and disparate: Secondary and popular writings? "Common knowledge" about his practices? Live experience of the music dramas? Study of his scores? Close reading of his theoretical writings? In most cases, the rather vague nature of the Wagnerist texts suggests that less rigorous routes were probably most prevalent.
