My Photo Rankin
This was one of my favourite photos from my entire project where I looked at representation of
human figure through a doll. The photo has been edited to make the model look more like a doll as
well as the use of the makeup. I like the tight cropping of the photo and how only the model is
present in the shot (there is no background apart from the hair). This has ensured that the facial
features on the model stand out the most and there are no other distractions. I love the eyes, they
are deep and have been enlarged and by doing this they really capture the attention of the viewer.
The expression of the model is distant and this helps to create the illusion of a doll. I like the
‘broken’ element and concept that has also been introduced into the photo. The lighting has really
highlighted the models features and angles. The colour has been changed in Photoshop and this has
created a strong contrast in the colours as well as making the photo more striking to look at. This
photo looks dark and has a creepy element about it, but I think this adds to the emotion that is being
brought out in the photo.
This photo by Rankin also looks at turning a human into a doll. I think the concept is a little more
twisted here as the doll has been bodiless and is her head is being held up in the human hand. I love
the cropping of the photo and how hair the hair frames the top half of the photo – it is a really nice
colour contrast between the bright orange of the hair and the pastel pinks of the background. I love
the expression of the model as it really looks like a doll (the model looks ‘vacant and distant). The
photo has a fun, colourful element about it that has made it more visually interesting for the viewer.
There is a contrast in textures present in the photo such as the hair against the skin.
The more notable similarity in this photo is concept and idea of the human figure being represented
through a doll. I like how the facial features have been exaggerated and made to look more doll-like;
it’s made everything about the photos very striking and draws the viewer in to look at them more.
2. The eyes really stand out for me in both shots – in mine photo the eyes are deep, large and capture
the attention of the viewer well (they’re the main focal point). In Rankin’s photo the eyes are
slightly more colourful and have been accentuated with extreme eyelashes. Both the photos have a
darker side to them contrasting with the idea of a cute little doll; Rankin’s being a bodiless doll being
controlled by a human hand, and mine being broken and smashed/cracked. The hair has been to the
photographers advantages here, but using it to frame their photo or part of it. The models are both
making clear eye contact with the camera and this in turn makes the photos kind of creepy to look
at. Colour as been a big factor in both of the photos (even though it has been used in opposite ways,
dark and gloomy against bright and pastel). I think both of these photos are very remarkable and
visually interesting for the viewer.
