2. Who was Christopher Columbus ?
Christopher Columbus
was born in Genoa at
1451. Christopher had
no education but
become a sailor when
he was fourteen. Soon
he become interested
in navigation and
exploration. In 1976 he
lived in Lisbon where
he worked as a trader.
He learned how to
make maps and
navigate a ship.
3. What was his thought ?
He thought about sailing to
west he want to go west to
discover a new trade route.
He thought he will cross
Japan, India and the Spice
Islands. Even he also thought
he will go to the court of the
great Khan of china that he
has read in the book of
Marco Polo he know that no
one would support him
because he was illiterate.
4. How he get his education.
Since Christopher Columbus was born in the port city of
Genoa, it is not surprising that he became a navigator.
Although he was largely self-taught through reading, he
attended Prince Henry's School of Navigation in Portugal.
Soon he had thought himself Latin and was able to read
understand about geography, as well as Bible he was deeply
interested with religion. He estimate that new trade would
be closer and it was 4500km.
5. Asking for support.
King John II of Portugal refused a request
from Columbus to support his journey
westward, feeling that the distance involved
had been underestimated by Columbus. After
two years of negotiations, Ferdinand II of
Aragon and Isabella I of Castile (both were
kingdoms of Spain) agreed to provide half of
the financing Columbus needed to search for
a route to the East, even though they also felt
that he had underestimated the distance. He
had already gotten half of what he needed
from private Italian investors. They provide
him 3 ships. These ship were quite old he was
disappointed but he dare not to complain.
6. Finally found America.
During four separate trips that
started with the one in 1492,
Columbus landed on various
Caribbean islands that are now
the Bahamas as well as the island
later called Hispaniola. He also
explored the Central and South
American coasts. But he didn’t
reach North America, which, of
course, was already inhabited by
Native Americans, and he never
thought he had found a new
continent. It was just a first
voyage.
7. Cristopher Columbus death.
He died at 1506 in Spain After lots of discoveries by him he
found island and even continent that we al know America
but he did not find the new trade route because that was
even more large than the previous trade route. He died in
Valladolid in May of 1506, and he was at first buried there.
But Columbus was, then as now, a powerful figure, and the
question soon arose as to what to do with his remains. He
had expressed a desire to be buried in the New World, but in
1506 there were no buildings there impressive enough.
house such lofty remains.
