Jane Smith Family Case Study
The Smith family is in the same situation as many other families that live in the United States. A
young single mother is trying to raise two children by herself with no income. Lucky for them, there
are several government funded programs that are there to help them to form a better life. However,
there are certain requirements for several of the programs. The Smith family should meet most of
those requirements. They have until the end of the month before all their resources are cut off. The
number one priority for this family would be to create some type of income. Jane Smith, the mother,
is currently unemployed and did not work long enough to receive unemployment. She has two small
children, but she receives no child support from their father. The program TANF (Temporary
Assistance for Needy Families) distributes cash assistance to needy families. The amounts awarded
range from two hundred dollars to nine hundred dollars based on the size of your family and the
state you live in. At this point, any amount of income would be great for this family. Jane could
possibly use this money to find a stable housing.
The family currently lives at the Salvation Army, but they must leave at the end of the month. There
are several housing programs run by the Department ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Jane has two young children, William age four and Sally age two, who will need nutritious food to
help with their physical and mental development. One of the food assistance programs is called
SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program). Each month the participants receive money on
debit card that can be used in most grocery stores. The debit card can usually not be used for items
other than food. Another food assistance program is WIC (Women, Infants and Children). This
program provides food assistance for pregnant women and children under the age of five. Either of
these programs would allow for Jane to purchase the food that her family

The United States' 1932 Election Essay
The United States' 1932 Election Many historians believe that the 1932 election was a popularity
competition, with the prize being the chief of the white house. This is because they thought that
Hoover's inability to revive the depressed economy, and his lack of a personality that reaches out to
the average American, provided Roosevelt (who was very popular) with a path to victory. I shall
discuss this view, with points in favour and points that argue Roosevelt had an appealing policy and
opinions that ensured his triumph which did not rely on Hoover's incompetence and lack of charm.
Beginning with the points in favour, it becomes easy to understand the principle behind the
aforementioned ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another point, which greatly affected Hoover's chances of winning, was his inconsistency in
methods. At first, he was dependant on voluntarism (charities and businesses helping at their own
will) to solve the problem of the depression. Hoover implemented the POUR organisation to help
the unemployed, but it only used donated money. The charity Red Cross, by 1931 could only
provide 75 cents a week for hungry families. "The situation had developed far beyond the ability of
private charity to cope" (source 3). His inconsistency is shown when he alters his approach from
opposing direct government aid and 'laissez fair' (to leave alone), to intervention. He personally
gave up a fifth of his income. In January, congress provided $2 billion in funding a new agency, the
reconstruction finance corporation (which makes loans to large economic organisations) and in
February, Hoover signed the 'Glass–Steagell' act, which allocated £750 million of gold reserves to
businesses. However, what he did was too little too late. Roosevelt's strength was that he was quick
to capitalise on the republicans' failures in their approach of voluntarism and this gave him an
advantage, as the American public was willing to try something new. Roosevelt once said in a
speech for his election campaign in 1932: "Whatever

October 16, 1996: As soon as the door opened, we got to the radiation suits. As my dad and I saw

disbelief," I can't believe this! Everything gone... our old house... our neighbors. Son let 's go down

Nhra Drag Racing Analysis
The TV show I chose for a male focus is in the Sports category, specifically titled "NHRA Drag
Racing". A little context regarding the sport itself, it is one of if not the highest ranking professional
automotive racing in the world, the sport is only place that features Top Fuel Dragsters and Funny
Cars using Nitromethane for gasoline allowing them to travel a 1/4 mile in 3–4 seconds at over
300+ MPH. The announcers for the sport react to the male drivers by giving a high regard for their
driving capabilities and character within the sport. Announcers for the male drivers tend to give
perceptions that the men, although only paid to drive the car down the drag strip, are generally
educated on the mechanical aspects of their car. The language ... Show more content on

The information regarding the sport is the same for females, all cars and equipment are regulated by
the NHRA commission and have nothing to do with gender. The announcers react to the female
drivers in a number of ways, the announcers don't tend to state a drivers gender is a female when she
is positioning her car at the starting line rather they let the females name speak for the driver and
even more so when name–dropping professional female drivers such as Brittany Force and
Courtney Force (both daughters of NHRA legend John Force, who still races today!). Although the
announcers don't typically state genders when introducing the female racers who are on deck, they
do often mention how incredibly brave the female drivers are for choosing to pilot these insane cars
as a job. The information given for the female drivers is often age, hometown, team sponsor and
how many seasons or races the female has competed in for the specific class of car or team who
works on their race cars. The announcers also do not hesitate telling the viewer when one of the few
female drivers have a tendency to work on their cars with their pit crew rather than have their team
worry about all mechanical tasks. The media's view of a female focused or presence in NHRA does
not consist of black and white views regarding the positive and negative views of an opposite
gender in the sport. The

The Pursuit Of Happiness Character Analysis
The Struggle life of Chris Gardner The film "The Pursuit of Happiness," rated PG–13 is based on
real history where Chris Gardner (Will Smith) invests all his savings in medical scanners that he
wants to sell to doctors and hospitals, but they are too expensive that doctors and hospitals consider
them unnecessary. Garden is financially unstable, causing his wife Linda (Thandie Newton) to leave
Gardner and their son Christopher (Jaden Smith) to work in New York. Gardner knows Jay Twistle
(Brian Howe) who works in the company Gardner would like to work with. Twistle sets up an
interview for Gardner. While Gardner is working with the company's internship program called
Powerful Stock Brokerage Firm, which is an unpaid job, it leads Gardner to financial problems
which in turn, causes him and his son to be homeless. With all that stress from working hard, being
homeless, and having his son to take care of, Gardner pushes through it – landing a job in the
company where eventually he became very wealthy. "The pursuit of Happiness" offers hope to
viewers to follow their dreams and not give up, no matter what situations they are going through.
Throughout the film, Gardner portrays hope to keep going in order to show his son that anything is
possible. According to Belinda Elliott from CBN in her review, she states "the movie is not a feel–
good picture that will leave you with the warm fuzziest" because according to her "we never get to

I Am Legend Film Analysis Essay

Robert Neville is the last normal living man in the world. The all of New York City is in ruins. How
long can Robert Neville survive alone with his dog in a world of vampires and how long do you
think you can live in this case?
The film, I Am Legend is a post–apocalyptic science fiction film directed by Francis Lawrence and
starring Will Smith. It was released on December 14th, 2007. This film is actually the third
adaptation of Richard Matheson's novel of the same name from 1954. Smith plays virologist Robert
Neville, who lives in New York City in 2012, which is inhabited by animalistic victims of the virus.

It tells us that technology sometimes is dangerous and vital if we cannot gain power over it. Later in
the movie, Dr. Neville takes Anna to the lab, Anna is amazed to see the zombies lying on the bed,
and simply sighed" Oh my god", Dr. Neville just said calmly "God didn't do this; we did". Again,
Dr. Neville uncovered the truth that all the faults actually are made by ourselves though new
technology does help us in some cases. However, human begins should be responsible for what they
have done to the whole world in the near future, meanwhile, it also teaches us a lesson that never
rush to create new technology at the cost of the whole world and all the living things in the world.
There is an alternate ending which is totally different from the original one we have seen in the
movie, which amazed me a lot. In the original one, it is a pity that Dr. Neville died in the end with
the self–explored; according to many reviews, the majority of the audiences do not like this ending.
The alternate ending is that Robert finally brushes up against a zombie next to him and comes in
contact with him; he never gets that close to any of them in the movie and seeing that gives me a
chill. In this ending, it leaves me the normal human feelings, which makes Dr. Neville more like a
legend. However, the original one is

Analysis Of The Play ' After Seeing Mary Stuart '
I was really looking forward to watching this play after seeing Mary Stuart. I came into the play
only knowing that the play was about couples. I liked coming into to the play not really knowing
what to expect from the storyline. I thought that the play was going to be about the couples
interacting more with one another as opposed to interacting in the individual couples. Since the play
is named cul–de–sac I assumed that there would be more interaction from the "cul–de–sac" all–
together other than the few awkward encounters. I think I thought that the play was missing a
climax. I am not sure when the climax or the height of the play was reached. I think that the lack of
a climax comes from the vagueness of the character objectives. I ... Show more content on

Johnson character could have been looking for happiness in his job, in his own personal life, or in
his marriage. However, the only true happiness seeking action we see him do is chase his wife
around the kitchen. I also thought there was a lot going on in the play at that at times it was hard to
follow. I felt that there was just a lot going on and a lot of inferences that had to be made, which
took away from the actors. I also did not like how it seemed that the scenes with the couples were
supposed to be happening simultaneously and it seemed like the day was starting over every time a
new couple would take the stage. I wish there was a more fluid way those scenes could have been
run where you could see the Joneses dancing while the Smith's were taking the breaks in between
the argument. When the Johnson's switched to the stage, I originally thought that it was a new day
because at the end of the smith scene they were ordering dinner and the lights seemed dim. It wasn't
until Mr. Smith made the comment about making the salmon until I realized it was still that same
day, just being shown from a different house. Again I wish there was a way the audience could have
at least seen a small portion of the two couples simultaneously just to give the audience an idea of
the time frame. Also I felt like half the time I didn't really know what was going on or that I missed
something. For example when Mrs. Johnson was so appalled that Mr. Johnson had gotten out of bed

According to dictanory.com identity means being a who or what as a person or a thing. For example
I have an identity, and you have identity. Identity is a really important thing. Individuals learn about
himself through the people in their lives.
Flowers and Freckle Cream is about a girl that thought poorly of herself and did not like the way
that she looked. Until her grandpa really helped her know that she is special, and that she matters. "I
don't know where grandpa found it. It wasn't at all common in the mountains where we lived. But I

Pursuit Of Happyness Themes
The movie "The Pursuit of Happyness", is about a movie based on the life of Chris Gardner, who

countless adversities and found strength in knowing that he is going through this to make a better
life for his son. Although Gardner and his son became homeless, he had a desire to have a better life.
He also managed to find moments to help shape and mode his son's education with teachable
moments.
People handle diversity in several different ways. I found similarities in the way Gardner handled
his troubled life with his five–year–old son. Gardner found himself homeless a few times
throughout the movie. The first time was the hardest seeing that he did not see it truly coming. He

concerns his son was in the only daycare he could afford was only teaching him how to watch TV
shows that the owner deemed to tell the history of our country. Likewise, I needed to put my son in
a daycare that I knew was not where I wanted him to be, but it was the only place I could afford at
the time. This daycare was over crowded leaving the children unattended to do whatever they
wanted. Parents try their hardest to make sure their child is safe, but when you are faced with having

Becoming A Father : Characteristics Of A Good Father
Anyone can become a dad, but not everyone can be a good father. A good father is someone who is
reliable, well rounded, outgoing, and strong. All these characteristics are crucial in raising a child
because they will dictate how you will mold your child into a better man or women in the future.
In the Movie Rebel Without a Cause Jim's father had good qualities but also lacked important
qualities that his son needed to feel he was able to rely on his father.
For example when Jim and his mother are arguing over her decision on moving he pleads for his
father to back him up, instead his father stands timidly behind Jim not saying a word. Jim goes on to
push his father and calls him weak for not having the guts to stand up to his mother. Although Jim's
father does not back up his disagreements with his mother he does provide for Jim financially. For
instance he bought him a car, a bike and anything Jim wants or needs his father fulfills his wish.
Jim's father sculpted Jim to become a good man, but made him afraid of becoming a "chicken" like
him. His father's behavior influenced Jim to become defensive and to get into mischief to prove his
dominance.
In the Movie Sam I Am Lucy's father is a gentleman who is special needs and is raising a 7 year old

Analysis of a Sixty Second Sequence of I Robot Essay
Analysis of a Sixty Second Sequence of I Robot Throughout this essay I will be analysing a sixty
second sequence of the film I–Robot. Directed by Alex Proyas, the film was released in 2004 and
was a hit at the box office. The film is an action–thriller inspired by Isaac Asimov's classic short
story collection. Asimov's books set forth the three laws of robotics. Law 1. A Robot may not injure
a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm. Law 2. A Robot must
obey orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with first law. Law

I have decided to analyse the scene when Spooner has caught Sonny after his escape from the
murder scene. He is taken to police headquarters and although the lieutenant is hesitant about the
idea, he lets Spooner interrogate him. I have decided to use this scene because I believe it helps the
viewer see how Spooner's prejudice of Robots will diminish through his interactions with Sonny.
Sonny's child–like inquisitiveness stops him in his tracks. This pattern of Spooner questioning
Sonny's humanity and Sonny replying to these questions in a very human way is repeated
throughout the film. There are also what seem to be small events in this scene that turn out to be
significant later on in the film. "My favourite scene is Sonny and I in the interrogation room. I love
its humanity. His direction to me was that I was a racist sheriff who'd just captured the person I am
most racist against." (Will Smith 2004) The seen is set in a police interrogation room. It is typical of
any other police interrogation room seen in many other films. There is a table placed in the middle
of the room with Sonny sat at one end. The room is dimly lit except for the table where there is a
large light shinning down on it. Apart from another chair there are no other objects. Also in the there
are six armed guards, pointing there weapons at Sonny. The film is set in the future, so in order to

Analysis Of The Hunger Games
Let me start off by saying, "DEREK AND MEREDITH WERE DESTINED TO BE TOGETHER
AND LIVE A HAPPY LIFE". If you ask the spectators of the show what they think about Shonda
Rhimes and her decisions in regards to her show, their first response might be that Shonda Rhimes
might just be the most heartless and evil woman on this earth. Grey's Anatomy involves real life
situations in which people (in this case the actors) have to learn to trust one another and ask them
for help and support. The unity that is shown most of the time on the show is heartwarming. From
season to season the viewers are taken into an emotional rollercoaster in which we never see what's
coming next. Every episode for the most part may be argued to follow the same sequence in which it
starts normal and then BOOM something happens and everyone or at least the ones involve put on
their gear and work together to solve it and it's those moments that grab the audience's full attention.
The bonds created between the characters make it seem for everyone to have that happiness, loyalty,
love and more in their lives. The meaning of friendship, love and family are constantly being
questioned but until now they have been able to overcome any obstacle put on their way.
The first three movies of the Hunger Games sequel are very captivating to the viewers. The
suspense of what will happen to Peeta and Katniss throughout the sequel makes the audience want
to 1) read the book and find out what happens since we all know

Prince Of A Town Called Bel Air
Prince of a Town Called Bel–Air
"Now this is a story all about how my life got flipped, turned upside down, and I'd like to take a
minute, just sit right here, I'll tell you how I became the prince of a town called Bel–Air" (Smith).
Many 90s kids memorized this opening to the hit television show "The Fresh Prince of Bel–Air".
Sometimes you can't help but rap the words and visualize Will Smith spinning in front of a graffiti
background. Will Smith stars in the show as a fictionalized version of himself. The theme song sets
the premise for the entire show. Smith was a street–smart, African American teenager born in West
Philadelphia. However, while playing basketball, he got in a confrontation with a group of men.
This frightened his mother, who sent him to Bel–Air to live with his wealthy aunt and uncle. Smith
grew up in a working–class environment and is now exposed to an upper class world. This is a
theme around which many of the show's plots revolve. The effect of the lyrics to this theme song
goes beyond pure entertainment value. Smith is hyper–aware that he is combatting the prevalent
television representation, at the time, of young black males as thugs. Through this 90s comical
theme song, Smith, who was born and raised in West Philadelphia himself, confirms the stereotype
of the urban, black, young thug and complicates that stereotype by depicting himself as nothing like
that.
As an appeal to ethos, Smith is initially portrayed as a person with good sense, good moral

It doesn't much matter who made us confess– and it was true, wasn't it? Farther turned the girl out of

Eric used her for a stupid drunken evening as if she were an animal, a thing, not a person. And

The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire
Throughout history, women have faced with a plethora of challenges that called for them to
transcend society's limitations. One of these situations was the challenges presented by the terrible
living and factory conditions in New York City at the turn of the 20th century. The Triangle
Shirtwaist Factory Fire took the lives of 146 immigrant women and devastated New York; and due
to the theft–preventative measures of locking the doors to the factory, owner, Isaac Harris and Max
Blanck led to even more lives being lost. This situation, although terrible, was not that uncommon.

would make the testimony confusing and less compelling. Jurors would also equate poor English

How might you (again as Peggy Fischer) draw on your personal network to influence each of the

Negative emotions may undermine a negotiator's ability to analyze the situation accurately, which
adversely affects individual's outcomes. (Lewicki, J. R., Barry, B., & Saunders, M. D., 2011). Due to
problems between Smith and Schmidt, Peter Smith resigned from the board in December 1991.
Immediately, following his departure the board approved of a $55 million capital project for
construction of MCA's new facility, $37.5 million of which was guaranteed by the board. The
Smiths vanished from the art scene at the end of 1991 and neglected all payments on their $5
million promise toward the planned new building for the museum. The problems started when MCA
realized the construction funding on their new building, which started underway in 1993, contingent
on the Smith's pledge.
Interest align vs. opposing the position
When two people take opposite sides on any particular issue in a dispute, they both often refuse to
budge from their divergent viewpoints. Most likely outcome is a stalemate. If a solution is found
then both will win. Negotiation interests largely relate to basic human needs. They are powerful
influences in our decision making processes. Interests not only include those tangible desires which
correspond to the specific problem at hand such as increasing sales or productivity. They also link to
our more basic human emotions that are less obvious to the participants (Negotiations).

Although the characters live in a world where they are treated differently because of their class, race
and sexuality, they still enjoy life. Shelagh Delaney represents this and puts forward ideas without
prejudice.
From this play we can see that Shelagh Delaney wanted to change theatrical productions to
represent the working classes rather than the upper classes. In many previous productions the
working classes had been represented as gloomy and bad tempered. She was not afraid to try new
ideas, bringing a completely new angle to theatrical productions. The audience were now seeing
plays about real people living in a real world, not ideal families living in perfect situations. The
audience would have been shocked by the reality factor of this play.
Presenting the working classes in a play had been a problem to many previous playwrights. They
had wanted to include them in their plays but had wanted to miss out the reality factor. Shelagh
Delaney was not frightened to show this side of life and has overcome the problem by showing the
working classes as they really are. She achieves this by presenting the characters as down to earth
and creates an environment which is basic and slightly crude.

Triangle: the Fire That Changed America Essay
Sawyer White Klurfeld C–ODD Spring Book Assignment 4/04/11 Some disasters are so impactful,
that they forever change the course of history. On March 25, 1911, one such event took place. The
infamous Triangle Shirtwaist Fire occurred that day, and left one hundred and forty–six people dead
in its wake. While many at the time thought the story would soon pass, and with it all the potential
bad publicity, the story of the fire spread quickly, and outraged many people. As a result, the

However, after the deadly fire, which was not related to the strike, things changed. Without
anywhere else to lay the blame, the D.A. and newspapers at the time began placing blame on the
factory owners, Max Blanck and Isaac Harris. Drehle points out that the D.A. of the time Charles
Whitman, "was no longer focused on improving factory safety laws. His priority was to indict Isaac
Harris and Max Blanck on charges of manslaughter (pg. 188)." They were tried and acquitted, but
their trial showed that management was becoming less powerful than it had been. In the past
management mistreated workers with impunity, but the public outcry after the Triangle fire changed
that. The incident showed that now owners could be held accountable for any harm that might come
to their workers as a result of their negligence. Tammany Hall, and Murphy himself, faced their own
difficulties brought about by the fire. Having just lost the election for mayor of New York City,
Murphy realized his power, and that of Tammany Hall, was waning. William Randolph Hearst was
very outspoken against Tammany Hall, workers feared its power less and less, and the new wave of
immigrants coming into the US had no respect for its influence. Murphy realized that he had to win
over the workers and progressives if he wanted to keep power. "The Triangle fire struck directly at
those people who Tammany needed most (pg. 211)." Realizing that he needed the growing influence

What Is The Story Of A Story
Many, many bitter faces were scrutinising me; it looked as though the whole town was there,
observing every shackled step I took. I would never harm one of the Smiths, especially Elizabeth,
she was like the daughter I never had. I had feared the worst when I found her. When I rushed to her
aid my fears became reality. Her cold body, lying in the soft, blood stained grass. Her lifeless eyes
staring blankly into mine.
Perhaps hundreds of people glaring right at me, as I marched slowly towards the front. The
courtroom scared me; I felt isolated. It wasn't the same feeling I got when I went for a morning walk
around town with plenty of white folks acting as if I was an alien. Looking at me in disgust,
sometimes they would even shout racist ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A man with an apple like frame slowly approached me, "Were you the house slave for the Smiths?"
he asked. I slowly nodded. The man roared, "Can you speak boy?"
"Yes sir, I can talk."
Then he grumbled, "Tell us what happened on the night of little Elizabeth's death." I answered with
great caution including details about what had happened that dreadful night, although it did not
seem like he nor the large audience believed me.
As I returned to my seat, the man stayed on the floor and stated, "A good dog is like a nigger. You
can get to know it, maybe some get to love it, it has no particular use but you keep it because you
think it loves you. Not too long ago a family dog killed the son of the same family. That dog mauled
that boy for no reason. Just got it in his head one day. Same as Marcellus, he may seem like a gentle
giant, however little Elizabeth stays raped and murdered. No criminal history, just the idea in his
head one day to kill."
Jessica, the mother of the Smith family, who was sitting in the front row of the seats, was sobbing
uncontrollably. If it was possible, the crowd became even more hostile than before.
When Eugene took the floor for one last fight for justice, he addressed the crowd with great
emotion, " Some negroes lie, some are immoral, some negro men are not to be trusted around
women – black and white. But this is a truth that

The Aftermath Of The United States
THE AFTERMATH October 16, 1996: As soon as the door opened, we got to the radiation suits. As
my dad and I saw the new world, he was amazed at how the incident had changed everything, he
was saying in disbelief," I can't believe this! Everything gone... our old house... our neighbors. Son
let 's go down to your mother and brothers, and tell them what we have seen in this giant
wasteland." As we headed down the hatch, he said," Get ready for work tomorrow, we have a lot to
do." Like what," I asked. "We have to start building houses," he responded. "Why so soon, it's not
like anyone is left, right?" I questioned. He then answered, "One of our neighbors had a shelter built
but I'm not sure if he made it." We then went down the hatch, through the detox center, and into the
shelter. My two brothers drowned me with answers like," What did you see," all I can answer with is
nothing. "Jeff," my little brother asks," What was the sun like?" "I didn't look at it much, but it is
like I described it before, bright big yellowish, orange, and bright," I explained as we went to check

Concussion Movie Analysis
Movie Review Concussion, the biographical sports drama, is a movie directed by Peter Landesman.
It is based on a true story of a Nigerian doctor named Dr. Bennet Omalu who is played by Will
Smith. Finding his way into America as a surgeon, he encountered and diagnosed a former
American Football player after their death. Dr. Bennet has to faced against a billion dollar
organization, the national Football League, in order to justify his researches and enforce it to be
publicity. The movie shows hardship and unfairness of the football company to Dr. Bennet Omalu.
This movie have three particular points that audience should consider and notice. Director, Peter
Landesman, was able to created the movie in a realistic and reliable way to the scenes. Though the
movie was realistic, certain parts of the movie was out of context and confusing. Especially the
actor expressions and feelings toward each other, they did not successfully execute properly to make
it believable. It is an amazing and educated two hours movie, yet it felt as if there are missing scenes
in the movie.
The actor as Dr. Bennet is the famous actor Will Smith, and he have been a major star in many
filming companies, and shown many great performance in his acting. Will Smith was able to
convince in his role as Dr. Bennet by his skills as an actor, his belief in science, and submission

Franklin D. Roosevelt and the New Deal
Throughout the history of our great nation, certain presidents have been known to stand out from the
rest. These prominent leaders are well known for their lasting, if not positive, impact on American
society. One such president that fits this category is Franklin D. Roosevelt. In Allan M. Winkler's
biography Franklin D. Roosevelt and the Making of Modern America, the author provides an in–
depth examination of Roosevelt's presidency and how it was shaped by the issues of that era. Some
of the main topics Winkler covers are FDR's perception of the Great Depression, the effects of his
New Deal program on American society, and the impact Roosevelt's wife Eleanor ... Show more

55). FDR thought just the opposite. He insisted on "demanding bold federal action to deal with the
economic crisis" (Winkler, p. 60) and deemed that local government action was just not adequate
enough to aid the American people. This difference in opinion over responsibility was directly
reflected in the way both presidents dealt with the situation. From what I read in Winkler's
biography, Hoover's main focus was balancing the budget since he was convinced that "a balanced
budget was an article of faith for both economists and ordinary Americans" (p. 56) and would
promote investments. He also created a number of committees meant to promote charities and come
up with solutions to the economic crisis but "gave them no authority to take aggressive action"
(Winkler, p. 56). This ultimately resulted in their failure. Roosevelt, on the other hand, focused his
efforts on passing legislation that would give jobs to the unemployed and revive the economy.
Programs such as the Works Progress Administration hired a large amount of the unemployed to
build "thousands of schools, hospitals, playgrounds and airfields" (Winkler, p. 99). This new
income, however meager, was more than likely the only thing that kept some families from the
brink of

Triangle: The Fire That Changed America Essay
On the afternoon of March 25, 1911, a fire broke out in the 10–floor Asch Building, a block east of
Manhattan's Washington Square. This is where 500 mostly young immigrant girls were producing
shirts for the Triangle Shirtwaist Company. Within minutes, it spread to consume the building's
upper three stories. Firemen at the scene were unable to rescue those trapped inside: their ladders
weren't tall enough. Exits were locked, and the narrow fire escapes were inadequate. Panicked,
many jumped from the windows to their deaths. People on the street watched in horror. The flames
were under control in less than a half hour, but 146 people perished, 123 of them women. It was the
worst disaster in the city's history. Von Drehle's wide–angle ... Show more content on

In November, she burst onstage during a meeting at the Cooper Union Grand Hall to call for a
general strike of the city's ladies' garment workers. That impulsed the "Uprising of the Twenty
Thousand," and within three months the union won higher wages, shorter hours, and official
recognition from its opponents. The settlement, though, proved only a partial victory. It would
require several years of struggle, including the Triangle disaster, to effect Tammany Hall's transition.
Von Drehle's description of the Tammany change is a real contribution to a much–mistreated chapter
of American history. While the Triangle fire was a turning point for Tammany Hall, the movement
for social and economic reform in the United States was well under way earlier. The first decades of
the 20th century are commonly referred to as the Progressive Era. The author shows how the activist
workers in the garment sweatshops of Manhattan were as vital to the progress of the period as the
intellectuals who moved into Federal offices in Washington, D.C. When the 1909 general strike
broke out, the garment workers found themselves with unexpected allies. A number of women from
some of the wealthiest families of the Gilded Age kindly supported the strikers. They paid fines and
put up their mansions as collateral for bail; a few even picketed and were jailed. They had names
like Vanderbilt,

David Von Drehle : A Writer
David Von Drehle is a very qualified writer because of his notable achievements at such a young
age. In 1992 he was sent to cover the presidential primary which started his career as a political
writer, giving him the ability to show a clear bias with the politics of the labor movement and
worker exploitation occurring in this time period.
Just 10 years after the turn of the century, New York City becomes a hub for manufacturing of cheap
textiles and the relocation of immigrants from across the globe. Every day, boats come into Ellis
Island dropping off Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe escaping persecution, Italians fleeing
poverty with hopes of supporting their families back in Italy, and many others hoping to support
themselves and others but all with the mindset of making money. There were plenty of jobs for these
immigrants to occupy in thousands of, what we would now call, sweatshops. These sweatshops
were run by greedy businessmen and were squeezed full of hundreds of poor immigrants in large
open floors, even further cramped with sewing machines and conveyor belts. The one factory to be
focused on with this particular story is one of the larger factories around New York City, the
Triangle Waist Company, owned and operated by Max Blanck and Isaac Harris, which produced
skirts and dresses. Isaac Harris and Max Blanck were both immigrants themselves and through their
partnership and diligent saving of their money, they were able to create their factory, the

Fdr 's New Deal Program
The CCC under his New Deal program, prompted the young males of America the chance to work
and bring in money for their graving families, who were suffering during the Depression. They were
working outside all the time, so it would better their overall physical appearance, but also their
mental health too. FDR used the CCC to get the young men of America to become manlier. This ties
to Teddy Roosevelt's propaganda about America needing to show off their manliness to the rest of
the world. The CCC brought forth a rejuvenation of the all–around health of the participants of the
camps. The outdoor work that the workers were put through help transform their figures. As the
Secretary of Labor, she played a role in the conditions of the workers the New Deal programs. Also
one of the big proprietors for the preservation of forest that FDR pushed was Guilford Pinchot. The
Pennsylvania governor liked and advocated for what FDR was pushing for what the CCC camps
intent was. Roosevelt, before his time as governor in 1912, brought in Pinchot to help boost the
popularity of the Roosevelt–Jones bill, which put regulations on deforestation on private lands in
New York. Being a student of forestry, helped Pinchot get his point across with how to implement
the conservation of forests. Pinchot's methods of conservation were based on the timber production
and the soil. Many of the CCC camps were based upon those two things. The people of Wisconsin at

Summary Of The Film Irobot
Underneath the sound effects, costumes and out–of–world context, films of science fiction
frequently contain hypothetical implications that mimic modern society in the way that artificial and
biological life communicate. The film IRobot (2004) directed by Alex Proyas, leads readers through
the year 2035 where humans and robots life side by side, until detective Del Spooner discovers a
conspiracy that may enslave the human race. IRobot comments on the notion that, "Art Imitates
Life" by using film codes, such as camera shots and colour to identify the importance of the
unification of artificial and biological intelligence, and that humankind's quest to evolve can lead to
a lack of individuality. Symbolic and audio codes reveal that technological and human power can be
a corrupting force in both the fictional world and modern society. IRobot encourages viewers to take
the messages about technological danger and look at our own current society to question these
controversial issues. Humans have always been ambitious, willing to create the new and impossible,
yet this has caused humankind itself to lose the spark that is their own individuality. Through
symbolic and audio codes, IRobot portrays the signification of independence and the blurred
identity of our present time. IRobot displays the exaggerated lack of character that is making society
to become followers rather than leaders. At the orientation of the film, viewers see a long shot of

Many situations present the important synchronization of internal versus external negotiations.
Many individuals have studied how each side in the negotiation is able to manage the internal
opposition to agreements being negotiated. This can also be known as "on the table", or what

By making Will Smith appear like a typical, credible African American youth the appeal to the
viewers is strengthened.
However, the stereotypes are not the only example for ethos in the music video. Will's clothing and
vernacular make a good case for ethical appeal as well. Throughout the video Will is dressed in loud
bright colored clothing with various trendy accessories such as hats and sneakers. The clothing helps
Will to appeal to the younger viewers because it's something the viewers can identify with. Also
Will's upbeat tone and hipster lingo help his credibility of acting as an average young black male.
While ethos plays a large role in the appeal of the video, pathos plays a role equally as large. The
pathological appeal in the music video is present from start to finish. The video opens with a
background soundtrack of an upbeat rap tune. The tune is catchy and grabs the viewer's attention

demands for viewers' attention because it appeals to their taste in music.
Whereas music is the main avenue of appeal in the video, there are other pathos elements present.

Essay on Belonging
Through analysis and exploration of my chosen text, "A Selection of Songs by The Smiths", as well
comparisons linked to Emily Dickinson's set poems, a vast array of representations of belonging
have been discerned. Through an abundance of ideas, and devices used to convey thesis's, the texts
provide variable discourses as to how we can view belonging, exploring the state of belonging,
mainly through its paradoxes. Thus the study of The Smith's songs individually as well as
comparatively to Emily Dickinson has contributed significantly to my understanding of belonging.
The concept of alienation is continually reverted to in the Smiths songs, emphasising the importance

This is similar to the barriers against belonging experienced in the Dickinson texts in relevance to
themes of dislocation to society due to the persona's self–sanctioning and alienation. The lyrics "I
am Human and I need to be loved" emphasise the necessity of human's to belong and it's repetition
ads to the effect of the persona's desperation to achieve this. Morrisey employs contrasting
sentences within the lyrical content such as "I am the son and heir", resonating power and control.
This is compared with weaker statements such as "of nothing in particular". Its effects establish
confusion and lack of self–awareness in the persona. The persona is continually questioned
throughout the text in there Self–descriptions, such as "criminally vulgar shyness". Personal
attributes such as this prevent companionship, and result in depression and consideration of death.
This suggests that it is the persona's self–hatred, and imbalance within that incites his alienation,
preventing belonging. The continuous banshee sounds between verses extends the tormented mind
of the persona.
Asleep continues to represent the role of sense of psychic wholeness in being the pathway to
belonging. It does so in complete lack of psychic wholeness and how this fails the persona.

What Makes Smith Run? Essay
What makes Smith run???
The theme of honesty is widely developed in "The Loneliness of the Long Distant Runner," in
which Smith tells us what honesty means according to him, and according to the governor. To be
honest is interpreted by the governor as the easiest and most common way to win the race, to get out
of the jail, and to have a family. Smith's sense of honesty therefore must be seen as individuality; to
be in charge of ones self and free of "the system" creates an honest man, a human individual. The
governor's interpretation shows honesty as conformity. Conforming to societies' mandate horribly
clashes with Smith's powerful sense of freedom and inner strength.

Running in effect than is actually an escape for Smith. Smiths' comment on being able to run forever
is symbolic, and it drives the point home embodying the notion that running is keeping distance
from the law, out running the system so to speak. When Smith runs he is untouchable. He is in his
own world away from the suffocating laws of England's juvenile detention policies and the world of
imposed law. Smith isn't running from his problems or from his past, but instead he is running
towards the answers to the questions that doctrine men's lives, answers on how to become free and
independent.
While he is training he also finds the time to think about life and society like a kind of running
philosopher. Running in this sense, provides the time to come to realizations, such as the gap he
finds between the lower and middle–upper class persons. Another topic that is thought about
intensively by Smith is the idea of being alive and being dead. To him it seems as if all the others
around him at Borstal and in general are dead and he's the only man truly living, due to his active
nature and thoughts about life. This thinking extends his self–consciousness and the awareness for
what is happening around him.
This story is rich in symbolism. Smith running acts as his freedom to explore the ideas of life. The
story relies on these ideas to depict the nature of man. Running than also is his means of escapism
from the forced civilization

The Life Of Eleanor Roosevelt Essay
The Life of Eleanor Roosevelt Compared to Jill Petrasek Eleanor Roosevelt was a remarkable
woman who was incomparable because of how much she had wanted to change the world. She had
helped society take action by fighting for equality between all women and men, blacks and white,
and many more things that she had believed in. Eleanor Roosevelt had a hard life when growing up
due to the fact that his mom had died when Eleanor was at young age (Ellwood 6). This had made
her have to move in with her grandparents, which meant that it would be harder to keep in contact
with her father because he was not with her (Ellwood 6). Eleanor and her father were still able to

Ethic, & Priorities By Jefriedom Polanco: Video Analysis
"Life, Success, Work Ethic, & Priorities" is a documentary YouTube video on Will Smith by
Jefriedom Polanco. The video is a compilation of excerpts from interviews with Will Smith
throughout his career, and it highlights his perspective, attitude and approach to life. Early in the
video, Will describes a cornerstone of his philosophy, his "Homebase". This philosophy was so
important to Will, he, along with friend Jeff Townes, aka "DJ Jazzy Jeff", titled their 1991 album
"Homebase". Describing the meaning behind the term, Smith says "...we Felt that how important it
is when you are trying to do other things in your life, how important that 'Homebase' is. To have
someplace, not necessarily you call home, but someplace in your heart, you feel home." (Polanco,
2013) I believe we all have a Homebase of some sorts. My homebase resides within me, a place
where I can step back from a situation, or even myself, and look at my life more subjectively. ...

It was 1992, I had saved $1250, and I decided to take my brother up on an offer to move from
California to Arizona and rent a room from him for a few months for a change of pace and location
while I thought things throughout my future. During that time I looked at many different career
paths, I thought about joining the Air Force, working construction, but eventually came to the
conclusion that furthering my education with a degree would be my best option. My parents had
offered to let me live at home while I was in school, so I thought I would stay with my brother for
another couple months, then head back to California. A couple weeks after coming to this
conclusion we received a call from our parents telling us my dad had been diagnosed with a brain

The Legacy Of The New Deal Essay
The economic crisis that showed all the contradictions of capitalism led to an increase of a deep
political crisis in the USA in late 1920?s. October 29, 1929 is known in the American history as the
Black Tuesday. It was the date, when the American stock market collapsed. In such economically
difficult situation, in November 1932, a regular presidential election took place. The Democrat
Franklin Roosevelt, who spoke with the program the New Deal, came to presidency. It was a series
of social liberal programs applied in the United States in 1933–1938 in response to the Great
Depression. The New Deal was focused on three main principles: relief, recovery, and reform.
[footnoteRef:1] They promised to bring the country to prosperity and economically stable future.
However, the Conservatives criticized the New Deal during the whole period of the reforms. It was
expressed by Herbert Hoover in Anti–New Deal Campaign Speech in 1936 and Minnie Hardin in
1937 in a Letter to Eleanor Roosevelt. [1: (notes)]
The legacy that President Hoover passed to his successor was disastrous. The country experienced
an unprecedented economic depression. However, in his speech during the presidential campaign in
1936, he expressed a deep concern that the New Deal is directed against the interests of ?poor
Americans?[footnoteRef:2]. He also blamed the Roosevelt policy in violation of ?fundamental
American ideals and liberties?[footnoteRef:3]. While Roosevelt was rebuilding America, Hoover

Frances Perkins and the Great Depression
Part A–Plan of the Investigation
To what extent is Frances Perkins responsible for and involved in the economic and social policies
during The Great Depression? Frances Perkins role in government through pre and post great
depression is not as widely recognized as some her fellow cabinet members who also pushed the
New Deal. The details of who was the driving force behind the New Deal have been skewed over
the years. How did Frances Perkins influence the economic and social policies of the Great
Depression? Do people only remember Perkins for being the first female cabinet member under
Franklin D. Roosevelt or was she actually a visionary of her time. During the time of the New Deal
and new government, involvement in economy and the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Perkins heads up legislation on working hours, workmen's compensation system, child labor
controls, abolition of sweated–out work from home, and other safety codes. They work together on
studies through the Labor Department on administration problems and job deficiencies that they
would later use in the white house (Perkins 59). When the stock market crashes, they set up relief
for the unemployed and publics work programs through their development of the Public
Employment Service in New York (Perkins 61). Eventually, when Franklin is elected president, he
invites Perkins to become the first woman cabinet member. In nineteen thirty–two, she officially
becomes the Secretary of Labor for the nation and they work together to bring the programs they
created in New York for the unemployed to the nation (Toedtman).
Part C– Evaluation of Sources
Frances Perkins wrote The Roosevelt I Knew in 1946. The book details Perkin's experiences
working under Franklin Delano Roosevelt. This first had primary source is extremely valuable in
giving insight to what Perkins accomplished and her work with Roosevelt. This sources purpose is
to give a firsthand look into the Roosevelt administrating by someone who was there every step of

strengths. A strength of this source is that, even though Roosevelt and Perkins had a strong
friendship, she did not let that get in the way of her

Jane Smith Family Case Study

  • 1. Jane Smith Family Case Study The Smith family is in the same situation as many other families that live in the United States. A young single mother is trying to raise two children by herself with no income. Lucky for them, there are several government funded programs that are there to help them to form a better life. However, there are certain requirements for several of the programs. The Smith family should meet most of those requirements. They have until the end of the month before all their resources are cut off. The number one priority for this family would be to create some type of income. Jane Smith, the mother, is currently unemployed and did not work long enough to receive unemployment. She has two small children, but she receives no child support from their father. The program TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) distributes cash assistance to needy families. The amounts awarded range from two hundred dollars to nine hundred dollars based on the size of your family and the state you live in. At this point, any amount of income would be great for this family. Jane could possibly use this money to find a stable housing. The family currently lives at the Salvation Army, but they must leave at the end of the month. There are several housing programs run by the Department ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One of the food assistance programs is called SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program). Each month the participants receive money on debit card that can be used in most grocery stores. The debit card can usually not be used for items other than food. Another food assistance program is WIC (Women, Infants and Children). This program provides food assistance for pregnant women and children under the age of five. Either of these programs would allow for Jane to purchase the food that her family ... • 2. The United States' 1932 Election Essay The United States' 1932 Election Many historians believe that the 1932 election was a popularity competition, with the prize being the chief of the white house. This is because they thought that Hoover's inability to revive the depressed economy, and his lack of a personality that reaches out to the average American, provided Roosevelt (who was very popular) with a path to victory. I shall discuss this view, with points in favour and points that argue Roosevelt had an appealing policy and opinions that ensured his triumph which did not rely on Hoover's incompetence and lack of charm. Beginning with the points in favour, it becomes easy to understand the principle behind the aforementioned ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another point, which greatly affected Hoover's chances of winning, was his inconsistency in methods. At first, he was dependant on voluntarism (charities and businesses helping at their own will) to solve the problem of the depression. Hoover implemented the POUR organisation to help the unemployed, but it only used donated money. The charity Red Cross, by 1931 could only provide 75 cents a week for hungry families. "The situation had developed far beyond the ability of private charity to cope" (source 3). His inconsistency is shown when he alters his approach from opposing direct government aid and 'laissez fair' (to leave alone), to intervention. He personally gave up a fifth of his income. In January, congress provided $2 billion in funding a new agency, the reconstruction finance corporation (which makes loans to large economic organisations) and in February, Hoover signed the 'Glass–Steagell' act, which allocated £750 million of gold reserves to businesses. However, what he did was too little too late. Roosevelt's strength was that he was quick to capitalise on the republicans' failures in their approach of voluntarism and this gave him an advantage, as the American public was willing to try something new. Roosevelt once said in a speech for his election campaign in 1932: "Whatever ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The announcers for the sport react to the male drivers by giving a high regard for their driving capabilities and character within the sport. The information regarding the sport is the same for females, all cars and equipment are regulated by the NHRA commission and have nothing to do with gender. The announcers react to the female drivers in a number of ways, the announcers don't tend to state a drivers gender is a female when she is positioning her car at the starting line rather they let the females name speak for the driver and even more so when name–dropping professional female drivers such as Brittany Force and Courtney Force (both daughters of NHRA legend John Force, who still races today!). Although the announcers don't typically state genders when introducing the female racers who are on deck, they do often mention how incredibly brave the female drivers are for choosing to pilot these insane cars as a job. The information given for the female drivers is often age, hometown, team sponsor and how many seasons or races the female has competed in for the specific class of car or team who works on their race cars. The announcers also do not hesitate telling the viewer when one of the few female drivers have a tendency to work on their cars with their pit crew rather than have their team worry about all mechanical tasks. • 5. The Pursuit Of Happiness Character Analysis The Struggle life of Chris Gardner The film "The Pursuit of Happiness," rated PG–13 is based on real history where Chris Gardner (Will Smith) invests all his savings in medical scanners that he wants to sell to doctors and hospitals, but they are too expensive that doctors and hospitals consider them unnecessary. Garden is financially unstable, causing his wife Linda (Thandie Newton) to leave Gardner and their son Christopher (Jaden Smith) to work in New York. Gardner knows Jay Twistle (Brian Howe) who works in the company Gardner would like to work with. Twistle sets up an interview for Gardner. While Gardner is working with the company's internship program called Powerful Stock Brokerage Firm, which is an unpaid job, it leads Gardner to financial problems which in turn, causes him and his son to be homeless. With all that stress from working hard, being homeless, and having his son to take care of, Gardner pushes through it – landing a job in the company where eventually he became very wealthy. How long can Robert Neville survive alone with his dog in a world of vampires and how long do you think you can live in this case? The film, I Am Legend is a post–apocalyptic science fiction film directed by Francis Lawrence and starring Will Smith. It was released on December 14th, 2007. This film is actually the third adaptation of Richard Matheson's novel of the same name from 1954. Later in the movie, Dr. Neville takes Anna to the lab, Anna is amazed to see the zombies lying on the bed, and simply sighed" Oh my god", Dr. Neville just said calmly "God didn't do this; we did". Again, Dr. Neville uncovered the truth that all the faults actually are made by ourselves though new technology does help us in some cases. There is an alternate ending which is totally different from the original one we have seen in the movie, which amazed me a lot. In the original one, it is a pity that Dr. Neville died in the end with the self–explored; according to many reviews, the majority of the audiences do not like this ending. The alternate ending is that Robert finally brushes up against a zombie next to him and comes in contact with him; he never gets that close to any of them in the movie and seeing that gives me a chill. In this ending, it leaves me the normal human feelings, which makes Dr. Neville more like a legend. However, the original one is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Analysis Of The Play ' After Seeing Mary Stuart ' I was really looking forward to watching this play after seeing Mary Stuart. I came into the play only knowing that the play was about couples. I liked coming into to the play not really knowing what to expect from the storyline. I thought that the play was going to be about the couples interacting more with one another as opposed to interacting in the individual couples. Since the play is named cul–de–sac I assumed that there would be more interaction from the "cul–de–sac" all– together other than the few awkward encounters. I think I thought that the play was missing a climax. I am not sure when the climax or the height of the play was reached. However, the only true happiness seeking action we see him do is chase his wife around the kitchen. I also thought there was a lot going on in the play at that at times it was hard to follow. I felt that there was just a lot going on and a lot of inferences that had to be made, which took away from the actors. I also did not like how it seemed that the scenes with the couples were supposed to be happening simultaneously and it seemed like the day was starting over every time a new couple would take the stage. I wish there was a more fluid way those scenes could have been run where you could see the Joneses dancing while the Smith's were taking the breaks in between the argument. When the Johnson's switched to the stage, I originally thought that it was a new day because at the end of the smith scene they were ordering dinner and the lights seemed dim. It wasn't until Mr. Smith made the comment about making the salmon until I realized it was still that same day, just being shown from a different house. Again I wish there was a way the audience could have at least seen a small portion of the two couples simultaneously just to give the audience an idea of the time frame. Also I felt like half the time I didn't really know what was going on or that I missed something. For example when Mrs. Johnson was so appalled that Mr. Johnson had gotten out of bed ... A good father is someone who is reliable, well rounded, outgoing, and strong. All these characteristics are crucial in raising a child because they will dictate how you will mold your child into a better man or women in the future. In the Movie Rebel Without a Cause Jim's father had good qualities but also lacked important qualities that his son needed to feel he was able to rely on his father. For example when Jim and his mother are arguing over her decision on moving he pleads for his father to back him up, instead his father stands timidly behind Jim not saying a word. Jim goes on to push his father and calls him weak for not having the guts to stand up to his mother. Although Jim's father does not back up his disagreements with his mother he does provide for Jim financially. For instance he bought him a car, a bike and anything Jim wants or needs his father fulfills his wish. Jim's father sculpted Jim to become a good man, but made him afraid of becoming a "chicken" like him. His father's behavior influenced Jim to become defensive and to get into mischief to prove his dominance. Directed by Alex Proyas, the film was released in 2004 and was a hit at the box office. The film is an action–thriller inspired by Isaac Asimov's classic short story collection. Asimov's books set forth the three laws of robotics. Law 1. A Robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm. Law 2. A Robot must obey orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with first law. Law 3. I have decided to analyse the scene when Spooner has caught Sonny after his escape from the murder scene. He is taken to police headquarters and although the lieutenant is hesitant about the idea, he lets Spooner interrogate him. I have decided to use this scene because I believe it helps the viewer see how Spooner's prejudice of Robots will diminish through his interactions with Sonny. Sonny's child–like inquisitiveness stops him in his tracks. This pattern of Spooner questioning Sonny's humanity and Sonny replying to these questions in a very human way is repeated throughout the film. There are also what seem to be small events in this scene that turn out to be significant later on in the film. "My favourite scene is Sonny and I in the interrogation room. I love its humanity. His direction to me was that I was a racist sheriff who'd just captured the person I am most racist against." (Will Smith 2004) The seen is set in a police interrogation room. Grey's Anatomy involves real life situations in which people (in this case the actors) have to learn to trust one another and ask them for help and support. Prince Of A Town Called Bel Air Prince of a Town Called Bel–Air "Now this is a story all about how my life got flipped, turned upside down, and I'd like to take a minute, just sit right here, I'll tell you how I became the prince of a town called Bel–Air" (Smith). Many 90s kids memorized this opening to the hit television show "The Fresh Prince of Bel–Air". Sometimes you can't help but rap the words and visualize Will Smith spinning in front of a graffiti background. Will Smith stars in the show as a fictionalized version of himself. The theme song sets the premise for the entire show. Smith was a street–smart, African American teenager born in West Philadelphia. However, while playing basketball, he got in a confrontation with a group of men. This frightened his mother, who sent him to Bel–Air to live with his wealthy aunt and uncle. Smith grew up in a working–class environment and is now exposed to an upper class world. This is a theme around which many of the show's plots revolve. The effect of the lyrics to this theme song goes beyond pure entertainment value. Smith is hyper–aware that he is combatting the prevalent television representation, at the time, of young black males as thugs. Through this 90s comical theme song, Smith, who was born and raised in West Philadelphia himself, confirms the stereotype of the urban, black, young thug and complicates that stereotype by depicting himself as nothing like that. From this play we can see that Shelagh Delaney wanted to change theatrical productions to represent the working classes rather than the upper classes. In many previous productions the working classes had been represented as gloomy and bad tempered. She was not afraid to try new ideas, bringing a completely new angle to theatrical productions. He insisted on "demanding bold federal action to deal with the economic crisis" (Winkler, p. 60) and deemed that local government action was just not adequate enough to aid the American people. This difference in opinion over responsibility was directly reflected in the way both presidents dealt with the situation. From what I read in Winkler's biography, Hoover's main focus was balancing the budget since he was convinced that "a balanced budget was an article of faith for both economists and ordinary Americans" (p. 56) and would promote investments. He also created a number of committees meant to promote charities and come up with solutions to the economic crisis but "gave them no authority to take aggressive action" (Winkler, p. 56). This ultimately resulted in their failure. Roosevelt, on the other hand, focused his efforts on passing legislation that would give jobs to the unemployed and revive the economy. Programs such as the Works Progress Administration hired a large amount of the unemployed to build "thousands of schools, hospitals, playgrounds and airfields" (Winkler, p. 99). • 24. Triangle: The Fire That Changed America Essay On the afternoon of March 25, 1911, a fire broke out in the 10–floor Asch Building, a block east of Manhattan's Washington Square. This is where 500 mostly young immigrant girls were producing shirts for the Triangle Shirtwaist Company. Within minutes, it spread to consume the building's upper three stories. Firemen at the scene were unable to rescue those trapped inside: their ladders weren't tall enough. Exits were locked, and the narrow fire escapes were inadequate. Panicked, many jumped from the windows to their deaths. People on the street watched in horror. The flames were under control in less than a half hour, but 146 people perished, 123 of them women. It was the worst disaster in the city's history. Von Drehle's wide–angle ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In November, she burst onstage during a meeting at the Cooper Union Grand Hall to call for a general strike of the city's ladies' garment workers. That impulsed the "Uprising of the Twenty Thousand," and within three months the union won higher wages, shorter hours, and official recognition from its opponents. The settlement, though, proved only a partial victory. It would require several years of struggle, including the Triangle disaster, to effect Tammany Hall's transition. Von Drehle's description of the Tammany change is a real contribution to a much–mistreated chapter of American history. While the Triangle fire was a turning point for Tammany Hall, the movement for social and economic reform in the United States was well under way earlier. The first decades of the 20th century are commonly referred to as the Progressive Era. The author shows how the activist workers in the garment sweatshops of Manhattan were as vital to the progress of the period as the intellectuals who moved into Federal offices in Washington, D.C. When the 1909 general strike broke out, the garment workers found themselves with unexpected allies. A number of women from some of the wealthiest families of the Gilded Age kindly supported the strikers. They paid fines and put up their mansions as collateral for bail; a few even picketed and were jailed. They had names like Vanderbilt, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In 1992 he was sent to cover the presidential primary which started his career as a political writer, giving him the ability to show a clear bias with the politics of the labor movement and worker exploitation occurring in this time period. Just 10 years after the turn of the century, New York City becomes a hub for manufacturing of cheap textiles and the relocation of immigrants from across the globe. Every day, boats come into Ellis Island dropping off Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe escaping persecution, Italians fleeing poverty with hopes of supporting their families back in Italy, and many others hoping to support themselves and others but all with the mindset of making money. There were plenty of jobs for these immigrants to occupy in thousands of, what we would now call, sweatshops. These sweatshops were run by greedy businessmen and were squeezed full of hundreds of poor immigrants in large open floors, even further cramped with sewing machines and conveyor belts. The one factory to be focused on with this particular story is one of the larger factories around New York City, the Triangle Waist Company, owned and operated by Max Blanck and Isaac Harris, which produced skirts and dresses. Isaac Harris and Max Blanck were both immigrants themselves and through their partnership and diligent saving of their money, they were able to create their factory, the ... They were working outside all the time, so it would better their overall physical appearance, but also their mental health too. FDR used the CCC to get the young men of America to become manlier. This ties to Teddy Roosevelt's propaganda about America needing to show off their manliness to the rest of the world. Summary Of The Film Irobot Underneath the sound effects, costumes and out–of–world context, films of science fiction frequently contain hypothetical implications that mimic modern society in the way that artificial and biological life communicate. The film IRobot (2004) directed by Alex Proyas, leads readers through the year 2035 where humans and robots life side by side, until detective Del Spooner discovers a conspiracy that may enslave the human race. IRobot comments on the notion that, "Art Imitates Life" by using film codes, such as camera shots and colour to identify the importance of the unification of artificial and biological intelligence, and that humankind's quest to evolve can lead to a lack of individuality. Symbolic and audio codes reveal that technological and human power can be a corrupting force in both the fictional world and modern society. IRobot encourages viewers to take the messages about technological danger and look at our own current society to question these controversial issues. Humans have always been ambitious, willing to create the new and impossible, yet this has caused humankind itself to lose the spark that is their own individuality. Through symbolic and audio codes, IRobot portrays the signification of independence and the blurred identity of our present time. IRobot displays the exaggerated lack of character that is making society to become followers rather than leaders. The clothing helps Will to appeal to the younger viewers because it's something the viewers can identify with. Essay on Belonging Through analysis and exploration of my chosen text, "A Selection of Songs by The Smiths", as well comparisons linked to Emily Dickinson's set poems, a vast array of representations of belonging have been discerned. Through an abundance of ideas, and devices used to convey thesis's, the texts provide variable discourses as to how we can view belonging, exploring the state of belonging, mainly through its paradoxes. Thus the study of The Smith's songs individually as well as comparatively to Emily Dickinson has contributed significantly to my understanding of belonging. This is similar to the barriers against belonging experienced in the Dickinson texts in relevance to themes of dislocation to society due to the persona's self–sanctioning and alienation. The lyrics "I am Human and I need to be loved" emphasise the necessity of human's to belong and it's repetition ads to the effect of the persona's desperation to achieve this. Morrisey employs contrasting sentences within the lyrical content such as "I am the son and heir", resonating power and control. This is compared with weaker statements such as "of nothing in particular". Its effects establish confusion and lack of self–awareness in the persona. The persona is continually questioned throughout the text in there Self–descriptions, such as "criminally vulgar shyness". Personal attributes such as this prevent companionship, and result in depression and consideration of death. This suggests that it is the persona's self–hatred, and imbalance within that incites his alienation, preventing belonging. The continuous banshee sounds between verses extends the tormented mind of the persona. Asleep continues to represent the role of sense of psychic wholeness in being the pathway to belonging. • 34. What Makes Smith Run? Essay What makes Smith run??? The theme of honesty is widely developed in "The Loneliness of the Long Distant Runner," in which Smith tells us what honesty means according to him, and according to the governor. To be honest is interpreted by the governor as the easiest and most common way to win the race, to get out of the jail, and to have a family. Smith's sense of honesty therefore must be seen as individuality; to be in charge of ones self and free of "the system" creates an honest man, a human individual. The governor's interpretation shows honesty as conformity. Conforming to societies' mandate horribly clashes with Smith's powerful sense of freedom and inner strength. Smiths' comment on being able to run forever is symbolic, and it drives the point home embodying the notion that running is keeping distance from the law, out running the system so to speak. When Smith runs he is untouchable. He is in his own world away from the suffocating laws of England's juvenile detention policies and the world of imposed law. Smith isn't running from his problems or from his past, but instead he is running towards the answers to the questions that doctrine men's lives, answers on how to become free and independent. While he is training he also finds the time to think about life and society like a kind of running philosopher. Running in this sense, provides the time to come to realizations, such as the gap he finds between the lower and middle–upper class persons. Another topic that is thought about intensively by Smith is the idea of being alive and being dead. To him it seems as if all the others around him at Borstal and in general are dead and he's the only man truly living, due to his active nature and thoughts about life. This thinking extends his self–consciousness and the awareness for what is happening around him. This story is rich in symbolism. Smith running acts as his freedom to explore the ideas of life.
