Kat Kan Research Paper
Katharine "Kat" Kan has been reading comics for more than 50 years, ever since she learned to read. She earned her B.A. (1977) and M.L.S. (1981) at
the University of Hawaii–Manoa. She has worked as a children's and then a young adult librarian for public libraries in Hawaii and Indiana, and she is
now a part–time librarian in a PreK though gr. 8 school in the Florida Panhandle. Kat chaired the YALSA task force that created the Great Graphic
Novels for Teens List, and she has edited Graphic Novels and Comic Books published by H.W. Wilson; she has written about graphic novels in
libraries since 1994, most for Voice of Youth Advocates (VOYA). She also reviews graphic novels for VOYA and for Booklist. In 2012 Kat joined the

Movie Review : ' The Last Man '
Television is quickly replacing film as the go to form of media when adapting a comic book or novel. Sure, you can write a film based on a book or
comic and have it be great, but if it 's a lengthy property, that means that a lot of stuff will get cut out. Do you know how fantastic it would be if
Harry Potter was adapted for a television series? The books are huge, and although the movies are great, I think that if they adapted the books into a
television format, it could have been even better.
There are still a lot of comic books and novels that could be adapted for television. These are just a few I thought that should be adapted for television.
Y: THE LAST MAN

This graphic novel series has been in development hell for years. At one point, Shia Lebeouf was attached to star as Yorick in afilm adaptation, but
thankfully that disastrous idea fell through. With 60 issues, a movie would have to cut out a lot of stuff to fit in such a rich story, so the film route
would feel like a let down if you 're a fan of the comic.
What would make this television worth is the fact that each comic feels like an episode of television. The series has a satisfying beginning, middle
and end to work with. It 's not The Walking Dead where the characters go through the same plot over and over and over again. With Y: The Last Man,
all the men on the planet have seemingly vanished. Yorick must travel around trying to figure out what happened with people he meets along the

Pokemonke Treatment Plan
My treatment kit for children with communication disorders consists of 5 activities. The first involves a cardboard box covered in construction
paper made to look like a monster. This monster box has an opening for its mouth where items can be dropped through. Once the pieces are placed
inside, the child cannot take them out, but there is a hidden opening under one of the sides of the box, allowing the clinician to remove the pieces
later. The monster box would be appropriate for all children, both male and female, but may be most appropriate for children that are 3 to 5 years old.
This activity was designed in particular for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders, as they tend to have difficulties with turn–taking. To address

This activity includes laminated "PokГ©balls", a dry erase marker, and PokГ©mon cards. In this activity, the client searches for PokГ©balls that
have been hidden around the room and must produce the target sound or word that is on the back of the PokГ©ball for as many trials as the
clinician wishes to elicit. Should the client successfully produce those words, they will get to keep the PokГ©ball and "capture a PokГ©mon" by
choosing a PokГ©mon card. To win the game, the client must collect at least 3 PokГ©mon cards that he will use to "battle" the clinician, who has her
own PokГ©mon set aside. Given the abstract and multi–step nature of this activity, this activity would be most appropriate for older children ages 7 to
15. This activity is designed for addressing articulation disorders because a target phoneme or word can easily be written on the back of each
PokГ©ball and drilled. The third activity in my treatment kit is a "story taco." For this activity, I folded a paper plate in half and cut four different
colored pieces of construction paper to put inside. Each color has a different label: setting, characters, conflict, and theme. After reading a short story,
the client will fill in each piece and place it in their story taco. Then, the client will use their taco to "Taco bout the story." This particular activity
would address delayed receptive and expressive language skills, as the client not only has to analyze a story but also has to discuss

Summary Of Violent Media Is Good For Kids By Gerard Jones
In the story Violent Media Is Good for Kids by Gerard Jones, the introduction, body paragraphs, and the conclusion all fall short in some areas for
the structure of how it was written. In this story, the writer automatically begins with a personal experience. He or she in beginning is sharing how
they were fearful and alone. Also, how he or she did not enjoy going to school and meeting people. By doing this, Jones is using dialogue to grasp the
reader's attention. He is using a personal experience to show how he was feeling and his emotion. On the other hand, in an introduction, it is good to
ask a question to draw the reader in to what you are writing about. Another way to start an introduction is to start with a statistic. While in Violent...

She has gotten her research by working with students in public schools. Jones then shares the entire journey they went on to find out is watching
films is bad for children's minds. Although he is sharing the journey, in the body paragraph he did not share with us anecdote. All the writer was
writing about was statistics and the information that they found, there was no true story of what the students were saying about the films. If I was
writing a paper about children watching violent films or playing disturbing video games, I would talk to the children. In the body paragraphs, only
adults were speaking and finding out the information. I would conduct a survey with students who have not watched violent films and children who
have and see how they behave. In this article, it was written very well because Jones retrieved information from people who have worked with
children. Although I would have included more of a child's aspect and a parents aspect instead of just

Yossel: Novel Analysis
Graphic novels have been seen as a controversial topic. Are they literature or are they part of a separate category of art? Many authors have stepped
out of the stereotypical superhero graphic novel box and into a new world of using graphic novels for autobiographies, fiction stories, and historical
accounts. The graphic novel Yossel tells the story of a young Jewish boy named Yossel who grew up in Poland in the early 1940's. He spends most
of his days drawing superheroes and aspiring to become the illustrator for a comic book company in the future. However, one day in Poland the
Nazi's arrive to bring his world of dreams to a sudden halt. Yossel's entire family is taken to the Warsaw ghetto where he draws pictures to entertain the
guards. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although many of the stories are valuable and even edifying, most do not contain the same literary content as the "classics." Many of the sentences
are short, simple, and made primarily of dialogue. The story lacks in depth of written description, instead using pictures to relay the author's idea;
The pictures are the primary method of telling a story in a graphic novel with words as the secondary force. Illustrators draw enough pictures that the
reader is able to get an idea of the plot without reading a single word. Literature uses words as the primary force to convey the idea. The literary canon
is made up of novels which essentially use the twists and turns of diction and syntax to communicate the depth of themes and purpose, not pictures.
Although both of these types of books have to potential to be reinterpreted for generations and pulled apart to find themes and teachings that can be
applied to the past, present, and future, only the typical novel can be considered

Origins Of The Walking Dead

Origins of The Walking Dead
For my ethnography project, I chose to study the fandom of The Walking Dead. For the purpose of this paper, I will refer to The Walking Dead as a
comic, a video game, and a TV show series. The focus of this ethnography is to understand how the comic book culture influences many fans. Since the
series is based on a graphic novel series, and some of the fans are schooled in comic culture; they arrive with literacy in comic storytelling. Others who
are not fans may recognize the visually and narrative of zombie films, in the horror genre after 1968's Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead.
Yet many Walking Dead fans appear to have migrated to the zombie tale without any particular connection to the comic book storytelling, or significant
fascination, and the series' fandom illuminates how an apocalyptic imagination has expanded into popular culture.
The Walking Dead fandom has changed by geek standard. The Walking Dead has nearly all the classic of the 21st– century geek fandom: in this
picture, it shows you the evolution of graphic imaginary has changed to attracted plenty of fans. The rating success has produce games, cars, and toys
of the Walking Dead. The narrative extends over a vast range of official principles and the fan forms alike: its marketing team reaches out into nearly
every popular culture. The fandom appears to extend well beyond the stereotype of comic book nerds. Most fans' attention of The

Summary Of Mat Johnson's Incognegro
Different kinds of art is displayed everywhere, from our daily lives, all the way to our books. In Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics, he found
an interesting theory of how art and words evolved over time. Before, art and words easily went hand in hand, but as time progressed, art slowly grew
apart from words and now, each component is evolving into its own category (McCloud 145–146). Even though some comics demonstrated this theory,
words and art still created an extraordinary combination and made a huge impact in the literature world. Incognegro, written by Mat Johnson, is a
historical comic based on the 1930's time period to display the racial discrimination and harassment between African Americans and Whites. In doing
so, the story consistently ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Michaela starts discussing about a flashback of how she was becoming ready for what would happen next. By taking a closer look, it's easily
displayed on how the narration matches the artwork as Michaela is standing as well as speaking strong and proud by demanding for a confrontation.
She states how she was "taking care of business" (Johnson 1.53.1) based on the tensions between the two races, blacks and whites. Michaela is also
holding a shotgun on one hand while her shadows are illustrated behind her, demonstrating her point. With this kind of illustration and different kinds
of text icons, this panel establishes a perfect example of an interdependent technique of storytelling as it blends narration and the thought in the moment
as one. Interdependent panels fuse words and art together in hopes to convey the message intended, despite if one component empowers the other or
not (McCloud 155). By using the interdependent panel technique, it forces words and artwork to run into each other so readers can understand as well
as interact with the text. Incognegro contains different kinds of interdependent panels as the plot of the story heavily focuses on consistent time
changes, whether it's be the past or present. By Johnson bringing this type of word and art combination, it allocated this piece of work to be powerful
as well as memorable due to his tasteful

Gerard Jones Violent Media Is Good For Kids
Violent Media is Good for Kids, by Gerard Jones was written on Wednesday, June 28th, 2000. It was published on the website, www.motherjones.com
to present the positive effects some children receive from violent comic books, cartoons, graphic novels, rap music, and video games. The author,
Gerard Jones, was introduced as a renowned comic–book author. The introduction described the author's opinion as, "an argument by Jones that bloody
videogames, gun–glorifying gangsta rap and other forms of 'creative violence' help far more children than they hurt, by giving kids a tool to master their
rage." The articles asked if the author was insightful or insane. The article is an argument that supported the continued exposure of children to violent

The genre for the article is political because Jones purpose for writing the article was to promote and defend children's exposure to violent media.
Jones audience for the article included both side of the argument and allowed for interaction on the website for discussion. Jones pathos used only
positive examples for his argument and offered no acknowledgement of any negative effects of violent media's influence on children. Jones' logos
used a series of successful stories as a logical argument for the author's claim made in the title. Jones waited until the end of his article to clarify that
he was not arguing that violent entertainment was not harmless. This strategy builds the reader towards supporting Jones article. Jones success
story, as well as his son's, lead the argument so that Jones has credibility as the author. Jones use of Moore gave a sense of expertise to the article,
which was written in a happy tone that is less formal for a political article. Jones visual effects depict violent scenes from Oktane, a comic book
authored by Jones and Gene Ha. The images depict power and control in a crowded social environment supporting Jones

Metamorphosis Grotesque Humor
The graphic novel The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka and adapted by Peter Kuper, depicts the tale of a man, Gregor Samsa, who awakens from a
dream to discover he is a giant insect. Samsa struggles to comprehend his transformation, while worrying about how his change will affect his family
and how his manager shall respond. Samsa's overall situation is inane, and Kuper's illustrations provide risible scenes that stresses the ridiculousness,
yet tragic story Kafka has created. By using grotesque humor in The Metamorphosis, Kafka highlights the presence of irony in the absurdities of daily
life and conveys the idea that humor is a component in coping with the horrors of reality. Kuper's visual interpretations of Kafka's words emphasizes
the humorous response of Samsa to his physical change, providing insight into Samsa's pitiful character. Kuper's panels ... Show more content on

The narrator speaks in the third person, focusing on Samsa's thoughts and actions and creating the impression that first hand accounts are being given,
despite the narrator being limited to Samsa. The narrator speaks as underwhelming as Samsa acts: "When Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from
disturbing dreams, he found himself transformed..." (992). The narrator is very straightforward, and this is evidently seen in the opening line, which
abruptly throws the reader into the story and has no preceding context. The suddenness of the opening is bold, but is contrasted by the narrator's
casual tone. The narrator demonstrates a lack of concern for Samsa's predicament, but so does Samsa for his own problem as reflected in the
following pages. Kafka's choice of a nonchalant narrator, in addition to Samsa's underwhelming actions, conveys a sense of humor because of the
passiveness used in response to the situation that would be interpreted as more serious and provoking of

Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art Analysis
Today, images surround us, and they can have a bigger interaction between their viewers than may be assumed. In Scott McCloud's book,
"Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art", he relays the concept of simplification, and how to use it to bring more emphasis to the meaning of the
drawing. In other words, McCloud is saying that through a process of breaking down a drawing to its rawest and most simplistic form, the piece itself
becomes deeper in meaning. When looking at a finished image it should be apparent that the artist put thought into every detail, line, shape. When a
final image looks simplistic, this is where the artist has succeeded in tricking the eye into believing the image is effortless when in fact it can in some
cases be the exact... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By making a simplistic image as a logo or icon the directed focus brings attention to the details that the artist saw as important and most relatable
for the product being sold, company, or just image in general to the selected audience. McCloud uses an example of breaking down the image to
make the image more applicable in his example of the simplification process, "by stripping down an image to its essential 'meaning', an artist can
amplify that meaning in a way that realistic art can't", (McCloud, 30). McCloud makes a point in the statement that realistic art in these terms isn't
as relatable to everyone because it is too specific, and this means that not everyone can easily relate. The point of an icon or logo is to make it easy
to relate to, understand, or both in order to make the targeted audience remember the design and recognize it in the future. Going back to the example
of Figure 1 the simple design is something that is easy to remember and relate to because of the familiarity that is referenced by the design. These two
things are just a few of the key elements that make it a successful

DC Comicss Influence On Popular Culture
BOOM! POW! ZAP! When these phrases are heard or read, comics are most likely the things that come to mind. Made popular by television and the
selling of comics in general, franchises like DC Comics have risen to the top in modern day popular culture. Many people, however, are not aware of
how much of a social impact they have had. The DC Comics franchise has been present for a very long time, and within this period of time has had a
great impact on society; evolving with the world around it, and influencing popular culture with its use of technology inspired by real scientific
advances and its vernacular.

When describing an intellectual, the term "Brainiac" may be used. What is little known about this term is its true origins. Brainiac was the super
intelligent villain and enemy of Superman in the Action Comics series. Brainiac was first introduced in 1938, and the term was first recorded in print
outside of the comics in 1982. Another more obvious example of DC Comics' influence on colloquial phrases is the term Kryptonite. As many know,
kryptonite is a glowing green mineral from the planet of Krypton, and is the weakness of Superman. People may use the term when talking about
someone's weakness. Kryptonite is somewhat like the modern day Achilles' heel. Apart from influencing common terminology, technological
advancements have influenced tools used by the superheroes in DC Comics. Wonder Woman was created by psychologist and advocate for women's
potentials, William Moulton Marston. One of Wonder Woman's well known tools is her Lasso of Truth, which compels anyone who is caught in it to

The narrative became so popular that it has reached into video games and novelized interpretations. The series does depart from the comic's origin
narrative in some forms. Introducing new characters, such as the Dixon brothers, is one example. Yet, in many ways, the series transforms the tale
more through the appreciation of the apocalypse and compelling a visual story about how human face disaster. The series' popularity raises the
ethnographic question of, why people are drawn to this particular tale and fandom community.
The Walking Dead fandom perhaps on some levels harbors a deep–seated fascination with macabre that has often been projected onto the imagination
of supernatural creatures. The word zombie comes from numerous folklore traditions. It is best described as a lack of moral judgment and self–control.
In this picture, you can see Michonne exploiting these two zombies through a legion amount of zombies. Michonne was trapped and running out of
food when she noticed walkers do not attack one another. Eventually she came up with a plan to survive. She could camouflage her way through
without any worries. Michonne hacks off the arms and lower jaws of the zombies. Then she chains them up by their necks to use them as escorts for an
escape. The reasons behind this method are simple. Without their arms and mouth, the zombies essentially lose their purpose. That is what The
Walking Dead is all about. It makes the character make

Gerard Jones : Violent Media Is Good For Kids
In the writing of Gerard Jones "Violent Media is Good for Kids" is a very interesting essay in which he describes how violent media can help kids
to overcome obstacles. Also, he describes that some kids that used to be shy become outgoing by reading comics, he makes his point by saying the
kids who reads this comic, get confident by identifying with the superheroes of the stories that they read. He gave examples of kids that were
treated with violent media, but I am not truly sure if this is effective in kids or not because in the examples that he gave needs more details on how
they become effective in helping these kids with their problems, also this point will be more persuade if the author supports his examples with
information of the parents of these kids that believed violent media is good. Gerard Jones fails to give more details about how the kids that were
treated with violent media had a positive attitude towards violence. Jones argument on how violent media helped kids that were deprived of scenes of
violence, he argued that were more positive towards these scenes. Jones gave an example of his son when he was in first grade. He said that his son
was afraid of climbing trees, so he decided to read his son comics of Tarzan who are known for as rich in combat and bright with flashing knives. He
says that after reading this comic for two weeks, his son gets courage of started climbing trees. Jones is telling the reader that just because his son
gets identify with Tarzan, this comic helps him to overcome the fear of climbing trees. This assumption with little details makes his essay less
persuade because he did no point out the details of how this comic really helps his son. This example is a good hook to the readers, but the lack on
details makes it less convincing. Not only he gave an example of his son, but he also gave an example of a psychologist who make a researched with
urban kids, but the deficiency in details makes his argument weak and less convincing. Gerard Jones gave an example of the treatment that Melanie
Moore, Ph.D. a psychologist did with urban teens. She said, "Children need violence entertainment to explore the inescapable feelings that they have

Analysis Of Alan Moore And Dave Gibbon's Watchmen
When read with a critical eye, the world of superhero comics often offers a lens with which we can examine society, our values, the meaning of justice,
and the role of the individual in regards to the greater community. If all of this information is garnered from critical reading, then the way in which the
medium of comics constructs these meanings will reflect an embrace or a rejection of the common symbols and ideology of it's source culture. In the
case of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbon's 1987 graphic novel, Watchmen, the second approach is used, as Moore's writing draws upon the common
cultural understanding of superheroes and exaggerates or tweaks them, exposing their underlying ideals. In this way, Watchmen functions not only as a

The emphasis of these characteristics coupled with the prevalence and narrative authority of superheroes constitute a type of hegemonic masculinity,
defined as the "culturally exalted form of masculinity," which is linked to institutional power and the subjugation of women (Aulette and Wittner 527).
Hegemonic masculinity suggests that there is one correct way to hold power, and that it is hypermasculine, a standard reinforced by dominant trends in
comic book portrayals of superheroes. Any grand deviation from these stringent ideals creates a subordinated masculinity, one that challenges the
dominant narrative of hypermasculinity, though often throwing into question the identity of the man in question (8). On the surface, the characters in
Watchmen seem to bend to these ideals, but as each of them lack or challenge key aspects of hypermasculinity they serve to question both its
importance and the misogynistic basis of hegemonic masculinity.
The physicality and violence of the hypermasculine hero is emphasized in the character of Edward Blake, the costumed crime fighter known as The
Comedian, but this emphasis serves not to glorify him but to expose our acceptance of vigilante violence, especially when abstracted from morality.

The, The Sandman By Neil Gaiman
To my knowledge, I have never read or seen that many horror comics that involve women taking the lead over the typical male. Just like in
Vampirella, it had some horror in it, but was more focused on being sexual and outlandish. One particular comic book series I was quite fond of was
The Sandman by award–winning writer Neil Gaiman. What really got my attention was the character Death; the sister of the main protagonist
Sandman. Death is both the lord and personification of all death and life, but she is the complete opposite of what people see her image as, an image
of a skeleton with scythe and a scary black robe. We do not know the true image of death, but why depict awoman? Why not just a figure of a
skeleton? Is it too complicated to show Death as a skeleton figure or a mere shadow, like in the film The Frighteners? It is not scary and I find it
sexist to have an image of a dark and strange figure be a woman. This is similar to the Infinity Gauntlet storyline published by Marvel where
Thanos, the main antagonist, is on a quest to please Death herself in order to win over her heart and cause destruction all over the galaxy. Again,
another personification of death is portrayed as a female, seeming to signify that women are far more ferocious and scary than men are. I always had
an image of a woman when I think of death when I was little. How woman are seen in horror comics, they are shown either as being the damsel in
distress, or being death itself, but not

Partlow IV My third sociological concept is known as a gesture which relates to the Comic Monstore because it was a way for me to build a mutual
trust with the customers while helping them. I would say to them, "hello, how are you doing? If you need any help, let me know", while shaking their
hand to let them know I do care as a volunteer. That was my way of communication with the customers. A gesture is a way in which people
communicate with each other using body motion (Henslin, 2017). Gesture relates to my organization because the employees want the customers to
feel as welcome as possible. Noticing the customer, addressing them with an enthusiastic greeting, and a handshake helps the customer feel welcomed
and free to ask questions. Gestures relate to my volunteering because, when I addressed the customers with an enthusiastic greeting, offered my help,
and gave a handshake, it gave the customers the idea of feeling comfortable to ask me questions, and a few of the customers told me that I am well
mannered for giving such a profound greeting when they entered the establishment. Gestures relate to my experience because, it assisted me in
interacting with the customers properly so I would not feel like I am bothering them, but they would know my name, know that they may ask me

Maus by Art Spiegelman Essay
Why are comics not appreciated as much as the dry narratives of novels in the literary world? A comic is composed of symbols to express concepts
shared by all people in their own social environment, and provide more tools than conventional art to truly show artistic intention.
Comics exist to expose the ethnic representations that seek to control the development of collective perceptions, memories and emotions and especially
fear by investigating the techniques through which this control is maintained. Maus I is a true account of a Holocaust survivor, Vladek Spiegelman, and
his experiences as a young Jew during the horrors leading up to the confinement in Auschwitz. Maus II is about Vladek recounting his own history to
his son Art ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Spiegelman uses mice, cats, pigs and other animals to portray the victims and events in the Holocaust. He uses real features of human beings such
as hands, feet and emotions to give the animals the full potential to relate to. Maus reveals that the characters portrayed as mice are being seen in
sharper relief as human concerns in the world of mice. Spiegelman decided on interesting but possibly offensive use of different animals to use.
The first type of animal which appears in this comic is the mouse (MausI:5). The form of mice is used to represent the Jewish people during the
Holocaust and as of now too. The Polish police were involved in the arrest of innocent Jewish mice (27). The Polish people were pigs and Germans
were represented as cats. The Germans' appearance as cats began to make sense in the way how cats chase, hunt and kill mice (33). This comic book
was translated into an easily readable format to educate the history of the Holocaust to the younger generations.
Second, the choice of a comic format serves as a vital aspect in the reader's understanding of the visual society and making awareness through
generations as more attuned to the image than to the word. In Vladek's world, being and living as a human meant living in fear. Vladek escapes the
fear of death for a time through the intercession of an S.S. officer who wanted to learn English from him and in return provided him with some
protection (78). This

Comic Story In Literature
Just like traditional literature, comic books can be analyzed through narrative, structure, and plot. Since the narrative is one of the prime factors
in storytelling, comics must have a strong narrative. If there is no narrative, there is no story. Although, it's important to keep in mind that stories
are still stories, whether you're reading A Tale of two Cities or Watchmen. After all, a good story can be told in any medium at all. With this in
mind, while analyzing parts of the narrative, one can observe that the nature of the comic book's medium contributes to the storytelling of good
stories. Also, comic books just like literature can be analyzed through plot. While plot is not the end all of narrative, a poor plot can certainly
compromise the value of the narrative. Unlike literature books that can go on and on, the comic book storyline needs to be told in a limited
number of pages, and its executed through the sequential images. Like it has been said many times before, "a picture says a thousand words", and
in the case of comic books, the pictures tell a story just as well or if not better than a lot of written words. Take this example from The Graveyard Book
by Neil Gaiman: That whole passage of The Graveyard Book was converted into one page. Even with the absence of words, it's still possible to get the
same feelings of thrill and anticipation just like in a page of book. Since comic books consists of being released as monthly issues, a comic's plot must

hand, Gargoyles 2198 was intended as a sequel set in the late 22nd century when the alien race called the Space–Spawn – first mentioned in the
episode Sentinel by the alien guardian Nokkar – attacks Earth. Several of the spin–offs were based on interesting supporting characters introduced in
the TV show. One of them would have been focused on The New Olympians– a group of mystical beings loosely inspired by the Greek mythology.
The other idea was to follow the adventures of Rory Dugan (voiced in the show by Scott Cleverdon), a modern day incarnation of the ancient Irish hero
Cu Chullain. There was a number ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Comic Analysis
Palaeolithic cave drawings with sequences of images depicting a hunt are the earliest account of comics we have today. This type of sequential art
must be considered historically speaking when attempting to unpack the definition of what are comics. Scott McCloud defines comics as juxtaposed
pictorial and other images in deliberate sequence intended to convey information and/or to produce an aesthetic response to the viewer. In order to
better understand what a comic is , we can compare and contrast literary novels with comics through three main features: format, plot narrative and
length. Literary novels use simple text to uncover everything to the reader. In a novel, the reader is faced with having to interpret the characters he/she is

Literary novels require lengthy character development and buildup of what is to come in a story. There are five typical stages a novel typically
follows. The first part is the expositon. The exposition is the setting of the scene where early questions are answered such as setting place and time
. The main characters are introduced as well as the point of view. In a comic, readers are invited to piece together setting, place and time visually .
In the twelve volume comic serial entitled Blackhole the first series serves as the basis for what is to come much like a novel. The main character
Chris Rhodes is introduced along with the setting which is in suburban Seattle in the 1970s in high school. The second part of a literary novel is
the rising action which is the building of the tension. This building of tension can be seen in Blackhole when Chris has sex with Rob unprotected.
The climax is the third part which is typically the most exciting part. The climax in Blackhole can be seen when Chris begins to show that she has
caught the bug because she has had sex unprotected so she goes into hiding in the woods. The fourth part, the falling action, is when Chris begins
to not have enough food and Rob disappears. Lastly is the resolution, which is the ending of the story. The ending of Blackhole ends on a cliff
hanger with no clear resolution to what happened to Chris. In comparison, Blackhole followed a typical five stage story structure similarly to a
literary novel even though most comics may not . This exhibit of a five part typical story structure depicts the idea of how a regular literary novel
needs lengthy development. Length in comics may very greatly . A single panel comic may be considered a comic in of itself . Comic books show
and exhibit setting, place and time pictographically therefore they do not require lengthy exposition to set the tone or tell the

How Is Anthropomorphism Presented In Grave Of The Fireflies
Serious issues and tragic events are trivialized when presented in non–literary forms of text.
The exploration of serious issues and tragic events through non–literary forms of text– such as graphic novels and films– does not trivialize the content.
Instead, alternative mediums are able to encompass the seriousness of sensitive subjects through the use of images. This allows the audience to
experience the event in the present rather than imagine it separately in the past, giving a depth of insight into the topic without trivializing matter. The
graphic novel Maus and animated film Grave of the Fireflies are both able to effectively explore the impact of conflict on the lives of innocent lives
through visual techniques. Maus takes advantage of the graphic novel ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Grave of the Fireflies uses unrealistic, but expressive, character designs to examine the suffering of war orphans in Japan. These two texts use their

Anthropomorphism is the attribution of human characteristics to an animal. The use of this literary technique in relating accounts of the Holocaust
creates a distance from the horrific realities and softens the pathos, allowing the subject to be approached without the use of realistically explicit
images. It exposes readers to the damaging effects of the holocaust whilst at the same time protecting them from it. In a particular scene, four mice are

Kapow Coffee
KaPow coffee is a unique coffee shop that combines coffee and comic books into one experience. The shop is owned by Laura Davidson and her
brother Martin. Both found the idea of opening their own business exciting, and the response they have gotten so far has been very positive.
"Customers can order themed drinks, like The Dark Side Mocha, as a tribute to their favorite "Star Wars" characters and the late actress Carrie
Fisher, who played Princess Leia in the iconic film series" (Harvey para 16). Their main customer base is lots of college students because the
location is near UCCS, but also families and many people who are comic book fans. They have a huge selection of comic books and even take
specific requests. To get their name out into the community they use social media, and have hosted events like trivia night and a safe New Year's Eve
party. "As the shop builds their reputation among eager customers, Davidson said their primary goal is to have fun" (Harvey para 27).

Fooled By Infatuation Summary
(Intro)Comic books have been around since the dawn of man. Mankind has been telling stories without the use of technology, such as: typewriters,
computers, or any paper material. There are cave paintings around the world that date back thousands of years, which depict cavemen hunting animals
and depictions of animals within the caves. Women have also been included in the paintings not just men since they also fed their families and hunted
to keep them safe. In today's comic books, women are represented as sexual objects, not as mature, strong, or as smart as men are depicted in the same
stories. Women appear in comics for the simple purpose of flaunting their bodies which boosts sales and based on the demographics of the target

For example, according to Dana Dutch from the collection of romance stories Romance without Tears, "Learning from the shortfalls and mistakes
of a relationship is a salutary experience which will enable women to do better the next time" (9) In one of the short stories "Fooled by
Infatuation," for instance, a girl loses her stability because of an obsession with another boy she finds she does not like. The foolish or flamboyant
acts committed by youngsters are a normal part of growing up. The notion is that it does not matter if you are never caught; it is what you learn
from the experience that counts. In romance comics, the poor girls suffer and suffer; but in Dana Dutchs' stories her female protagonist never
suffered, no matter the situation. In her stories, they never had to beg the boy's forgiveness, either. Not all romance stories show women in
daunting situations regarding a boy or trying to fool around and fall in love. Most writers such as Dutch thought about how there is more to girls
falling in love and going crazy for a boy then going through the typical story of a girl going crazy for a boy and willing to do anything to win his
heart. But it still feels as though these stories became repetitive and have no new material to show for it. This can influence young readers that falling
in love comes with a price: going crazy for the person you want to be

Analysis Of Shakespeare 's ' Othello '
Manga Shakespeare is able to properly convey Shakespeare's original story and language through its use of images, original text, and speech bubbles.
The manga's use of different speech bubbles conveys the intended language and emotions of Othello, as if it is being preformed rather than if it is
simply read, thus putting forth a product that accurately depicts Othello in a similar fashion to which the play originally was intended to be viewed.
One of the ways Shakespeare's language is conveyed in the manga is through the use of normal speech bubbles. Throughout the manga speech
bubbles are the main way that Shakespeare's language is presented. These speech bubbles are simply round text blocks, which may or may not
contain a line pointing in the direction of the character that is speaking. The speech bubbles are quite effective in conveying Shakespeare's
language, as they are easy to read and clearly indicate which character is speaking. In comparison, the text makes it clear who is speaking by the
name of a character being mentioned before their lines. This is also an effective way of ensuring the audience is aware of what is being said,
although based on the reader one method may be preferable to the other. While reading the original text some people find it difficult to focus on
whom the speaker is when some of the characters lines are very long and may go on for a page or more. Within the manga this is rectified by the
speech bubbles being short and concise, thus

Introducing the mansion, a long distance shot is used. This gives a clear view of the front of the mansion and its immediate surroundings giving the
audience a full picture of where the film is set. The effect of lifeless immobility created by the camera's stillness makes the audience relaxed adding
shock to the effect of the scream that quickly proceeds in shot 2.
Unnatural silence creates a bizarre atmosphere that puts the audience in an uncomfortable position from the infinite background sound in everyday life.
The effect prepares the audience for something to happen and builds up tension. Creepy silence continues in shot 2 until Grace traumatically screams,
this is followed by unexpected laughter.
First, shot 2 opens with a close up shot on Graces face with several seconds' silence to add tension for the scream later on. The close up shot does not
allow us to see where the action is taking place initially because the lighting casts shadows and distorts the character's facial features. This baffles the
audience making it very successful.
Introducing Grace the director uses a close up shot on Grace's face. This emphasises the scream and enhances the information provided by allowing
us to follow her rapidly changing facial expressions. This is powerful since the audience become more involved as they see what Grace is going

The Legend Of Chun Hyang
Comics, since their conception, have been seen as an immature media that is strictly pop culture without the ability to pass substantive messages.
However, the quantities of people who read and share comic books provide open pathway to idea sharing. The Legend of Chun Hyang I is an example
of this cultural messaging through this medium. Written in 1992, as Asian cultures were joining the globalizing world, thismanga represented cultural
hybridity as a Korean folktale being represented by a Japanese company. The storyline is relatable for young girls who want to be independent no
matter which country they are from. Chun Hyang as a character in the work is not close to the actual Korean storyline. However, she is closer to the
ideal manga heroine who is pretty but brave, and independent but in love. Chun Hyang represents the move towards a more universal 'Asian ' feeling
and closeness between the Japanese and Korean pop cultures. Chun Hyang is the story of a young girl who grows up without a father, her mother is a
famous medicine woman. Chun Hyang, the main character, is a independent and strong willed young lady who fights back against the oppressive town
head or Yang Ban. Chung Hyang meets a young man named Mong Ryong who ends up falling in love with her. After the Yang Ban kidnapped her,

Illustration In Maus By Art Spiegelman
Illustration is by far one of the best methods of expressing a story or an idea to a large–scale audience. In literature, writer uses various amounts of
illustration to appeal to their audience's interests and point of view.
But with Graphic Novels, readers see things the way the writer/illustrator sees them. Drawings, cartoons, and photographs can give readers the exact
imaging the author wants to share with his readers.
When people think of graphic novels, most likely you would think of children's books or Superhero comics. Now this may be true; but the use of
graphic novels hold a lot of benefits for adults as well. They're the perfect way to share a message without any miscommunication. And let's face it,
almost every adult out has a favorite genre that can be shared in a graphic novel. I for one love comics with Anti–heroes and Sci–fi/Fantasies. One
famous graphic novel that shows the power of illustration is Maus by Art Spiegelman, which illustrates the darkest points of the Holocaust with a
perspective of mice (Jews) being suppressed by cats (Nazis). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

17 December 2014 In the essay, "In Defense of Graphic Novels", Kathryn Strong Hansen explains the different opinions about using graphic novels in
a classroom. When most people hear of a graphic novel, they assume it's a comic book and that it has no relevance in a classroom. Because they have
pictures, they also assume that they are meant for children. Hansen explains, however, that students can analyze graphic novels the same way they
would a prose–only novel. She also states that low level reading students could benefit from reading graphic novels. Because they can be used to help
struggling students, students who are doing well believe that graphic novels are too easy of a read. It could also ... Show more content on

Graphic novels prevent this confusion from happening. With the pictures that go along with the text, students can understand exactly what the author
is saying. Graphic novelist, David Small, confirms this in his interview by Julia Tindell. He says, "I know that the text is there to tell what the
pictures can't and vise versa. They augment one another" (Small). For example in Blankets, there is a part where the main character, Craig, goes out
to where he and his younger brother would go out to play when they were little. They remember about a cave that they had found once but every day
they went back to it, it would get smaller and smaller until one day, it just disappeared. Craig then says, "But that memory is so dream–like–too eerie
and beautiful and cryptic to be true" (538). From that text, you would most likely assume that the memory he was talking about is the one with the
cave. By the image in Fig. 1, you can clearly see that the memory that he is really talking about is the memory of his old love interest, Reina. The
images that come with the text really make it easier to grasp what the author's

Descriptive Essay : Capturing Invisibility

Professor O'Gorman
ENWR 106–21

Capturing Invisibility I came to Montclair to have the opportunity to study fine art. As an aspiring artist, I am always searching for means of
inspiration. When I read a book, I have a lot of trouble remaining focused after the first ten pages. In affect, it typically takes me several different days
and time blocks to complete the book. Because Invisible People is a graphic novel, I was able to not only easily keep my attention on the story, but also
genuinely enjoy the plot. I sat down during a rainy day and read the whole novel in under an hour. Being provided pictures and drawings while I
read a novel helps me connect with what is going on and allows me to metaphorically put myself in the story. The main problem with The Things
They Carried is that it is just like every other book I have ever read. Before reading Invisible People, I had never even thought about picking up a comic
book, or any form of graphic novel. To my surprise, I had a lot of fun interpreting the story line while I analyzed the well–thought out illustrations. The
Things They Carried is an in–depth novel depicting life, love, death and war. Although it contains a compelling message, there is no spark that entices
me to continue reading more of it than I was assigned. Fortunately, because of the expressive artwork in the graphic novel Invisible People I was able
to acquire enough sentimentality for both novels. The way that a story is

Books change with readers as they age from a child into an adult. Children start off with simple picture books or short stories that hold many images

Overall, what people read affect their lives, influence their growth and impact their character. I am no different. As a reader, the books I have read

The Cartoon ' The Killing Joke '
Imagine this, a demented man dressed like a clown escapes prison only to shoot a woman in the stomach and rape her. Now imagine that he
kidnaps her father, strips him naked, and torture him physically as well as mentally by showing him the pictures of his daughter slowly dying while
being rapped. You might be asking what horror movie this is from? It is actually from a wildly popular comic book called "The Killing Joke".
Although appearing to be childish, comic books show many adult themes such as violence, gore, and pornography, thereby making them unsuitable
for children. Violence is a common theme seen in many different types of entertainment. We see it all the time in movies, T.V. shows, and video
games. However, when there is violence present in comic books they tend to go beyond what we expect. It could vary from a simple punch, to a
person having their brains spill out from being beaten with a barbwire bat. In comics such as Kickass 2, the antagonist kills at gunpoint four
defenseless little children. He then continues to break into an apartment, kill a man, beat the man's girlfriend, and rape her with his three friends
(Meylikhov). There are so many types of entertainment available nowadays that contains violence. However, there is always some kind of bounder or
line not to be crossed. Comics have not only past that line but have accelerated past it. They gone to great lengths that other forms of media would
have been shut down for by programs such as the FCC.

World War II Comic Books Failed
Man has utilized graphics since before writing was invented to communicate their thoughts and feelings, and while for a period, the combination of
both image and written word remained underutilized, the core idea behind 'comics' or 'graphic novels' continued to develop. The subject of these
graphics range from early humans attempting to communicate information about animal migration patterns painted on the walls of caves, to
mythological stories painted onto the surface of pottery. These images are made to be informative, or entertaining, but in general fail to deliver a
message that moves beyond the delivery of information, and between good and bad. In both pre and post–World War II comic books failed to be much
more than entertaining propaganda. Yet, eventuallycomics shifted towards darker, more psychological themes, and with this change in style came
additional recognition and popularity for graphic stories as a medium. Following these developments, many have claimed that the driving force behind
the economic and critical success of graphic stories created in this era was primarily due to the improvements in production values and sheer mass of
content created. However, it is more likely that the change in subject matter affected the perception of comics due to the ability to evoke emotion in a
fashion that just words and just pictures could not do by themselves. The graphic narrative's unique ability to demand the reader become a witness to

Analysis Of The Book ' Comic Party Poster ' Essay

comic–party–poster
Summary: Just when high school nears the close, a Japanese student named Kazuki and his girlfriend, is pulled by his scheming best friend Taishi into
the world of fan comics. As Kazuki's obsession with finishing his comic in time for the next convention threatens his schoolwork and his relationships,
he must decide how he will use his time or risk losing Mizuki.
STORY – 4.1
Tragically, it has been a long time since I watched the show, and clearly my methods changed over the years. From the fragments I do remember
comes a great, clean story of one named Kazuki and his introduction into Manga (specifically doujinshi) that takes us on a journey through an industry.
When most people think of Manga in America, they might compare it to Marvel Comics, which is somewhat misleading. Manga is not reserved for
super–heroes nor to trite concepts that may be disgusting in America (see The Mask) but yet never quite puts us inside. This is not to say Comic Party
attempts this, rather it expresses the deeply woven nature of the Manga universe that should give any foreigner a pause before stereotyping the industry
negatively.
This is perhaps the biggest appeal and weakness to Comic Party, in that as an educational comedy it seeks to balance self–deprecating jokes with
giving its audience a better comprehension of the work involved, all while not coming off as boring or uninspired.
Whether it succeeds is largely up to you, however

The Dark Knight Returns, By Jorge Luis Borges Essay
Writer, Jorge Luis Borges says, "The things that are said in literature are always the same. What is important is the way they are said." Literature is
such a broad, all encompassing term that much is lost in translation. This is part of the reason behind the ongoing brawl: what qualifies as literature?
In the case of graphic novels, they are often cast aside by critics, deemed definitively inferior and lacking intellectual merit. However, this assumption
does not hold up in today's world of literary work. Genres and mediums evolve every minute of every day, continuously changing the game. Even
considering the evolution of traditional novels in modern society challenges the original denotation of literature. "As a consequence, the traditional
characteristics [lose] their importance as the defining criteria of literary works of art" (Breuer para. 12). Due to the evolving world of literature, the
definition of such must evolve as well, claiming a few necessary guidelines but fluctuating as required. The graphic novel, The Dark Knight Returns,
can be definitively classified as a work of literature through Frank Miller's approach to written language application, character establishment, and plot
development.
Perhaps the most inherent part of The Dark Knight Returns' literary qualification is the very use of written language. In simplest terms, literature is
defined as "written works." One must not be swayed then by the comic aspect of graphic novels because the presence of

Maus Literary Analysis

down some examples of literature, more or less the lists we've made do not mention any graphic novels. However, the graphic novel entitled Maus
by Art Spiegelman is a story about a young man asking his dad to relive his days as a Holocaust survivor, which backs the idea that graphic novels can
be treated as a piece of literature. The Maus series can be a great example because the plot, sub–plot, themes and characters are greatly weaved together.
These types of novels should be considered a form literature because it expresses the story better and that it's still profound. Graphic novels, like Maus,

depicted gruesome and inhumane scenes like being beaten and starvation, created a different experience as opposed to novels because the images
are much more expressive than words. In addition, You can see what the author himself is trying to show through the illustrations. For example,
some readers have troubles visualizing a scene or place, but the pictures make up for it. This pulls even the reluctant or disabled readers since it
helps them understand the text better. In Maus I, Spiegelman shows a sketch of how Vladek and his friends hid from the Nazis. In order to avoid
being caught, they "made a brick wall filled high with coal. Behind this wall we could be a little safe" (110). Some people wouldn't be able to

Kat Kan Research Paper

  • 1. Kat Kan Research Paper Katharine "Kat" Kan has been reading comics for more than 50 years, ever since she learned to read. She earned her B.A. (1977) and M.L.S. (1981) at the University of Hawaii–Manoa. She has worked as a children's and then a young adult librarian for public libraries in Hawaii and Indiana, and she is now a part–time librarian in a PreK though gr. 8 school in the Florida Panhandle. Kat chaired the YALSA task force that created the Great Graphic Novels for Teens List, and she has edited Graphic Novels and Comic Books published by H.W. Wilson; she has written about graphic novels in libraries since 1994, most for Voice of Youth Advocates (VOYA). She also reviews graphic novels for VOYA and for Booklist. In 2012 Kat joined the Board of Directors of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Movie Review : ' The Last Man ' Television is quickly replacing film as the go to form of media when adapting a comic book or novel. Sure, you can write a film based on a book or comic and have it be great, but if it 's a lengthy property, that means that a lot of stuff will get cut out. Do you know how fantastic it would be if Harry Potter was adapted for a television series? The books are huge, and although the movies are great, I think that if they adapted the books into a television format, it could have been even better. There are still a lot of comic books and novels that could be adapted for television. These are just a few I thought that should be adapted for television. Y: THE LAST MAN y–the–last–man–social This graphic novel series has been in development hell for years. At one point, Shia Lebeouf was attached to star as Yorick in afilm adaptation, but thankfully that disastrous idea fell through. With 60 issues, a movie would have to cut out a lot of stuff to fit in such a rich story, so the film route would feel like a let down if you 're a fan of the comic. What would make this television worth is the fact that each comic feels like an episode of television. The series has a satisfying beginning, middle and end to work with. It 's not The Walking Dead where the characters go through the same plot over and over and over again. With Y: The Last Man, all the men on the planet have seemingly vanished. Yorick must travel around trying to figure out what happened with people he meets along the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Pokemonke Treatment Plan My treatment kit for children with communication disorders consists of 5 activities. The first involves a cardboard box covered in construction paper made to look like a monster. This monster box has an opening for its mouth where items can be dropped through. Once the pieces are placed inside, the child cannot take them out, but there is a hidden opening under one of the sides of the box, allowing the clinician to remove the pieces later. The monster box would be appropriate for all children, both male and female, but may be most appropriate for children that are 3 to 5 years old. This activity was designed in particular for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders, as they tend to have difficulties with turn–taking. To address turn–taking ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This activity includes laminated "PokГ©balls", a dry erase marker, and PokГ©mon cards. In this activity, the client searches for PokГ©balls that have been hidden around the room and must produce the target sound or word that is on the back of the PokГ©ball for as many trials as the clinician wishes to elicit. Should the client successfully produce those words, they will get to keep the PokГ©ball and "capture a PokГ©mon" by choosing a PokГ©mon card. To win the game, the client must collect at least 3 PokГ©mon cards that he will use to "battle" the clinician, who has her own PokГ©mon set aside. Given the abstract and multi–step nature of this activity, this activity would be most appropriate for older children ages 7 to 15. This activity is designed for addressing articulation disorders because a target phoneme or word can easily be written on the back of each PokГ©ball and drilled. The third activity in my treatment kit is a "story taco." For this activity, I folded a paper plate in half and cut four different colored pieces of construction paper to put inside. Each color has a different label: setting, characters, conflict, and theme. After reading a short story, the client will fill in each piece and place it in their story taco. Then, the client will use their taco to "Taco bout the story." This particular activity would address delayed receptive and expressive language skills, as the client not only has to analyze a story but also has to discuss ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Summary Of Violent Media Is Good For Kids By Gerard Jones In the story Violent Media Is Good for Kids by Gerard Jones, the introduction, body paragraphs, and the conclusion all fall short in some areas for the structure of how it was written. In this story, the writer automatically begins with a personal experience. He or she in beginning is sharing how they were fearful and alone. Also, how he or she did not enjoy going to school and meeting people. By doing this, Jones is using dialogue to grasp the reader's attention. He is using a personal experience to show how he was feeling and his emotion. On the other hand, in an introduction, it is good to ask a question to draw the reader in to what you are writing about. Another way to start an introduction is to start with a statistic. While in Violent... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He soon finds a psychologist with a PH.D named Melanie Moore who explains children who watch violent films would express their feelings better. She has gotten her research by working with students in public schools. Jones then shares the entire journey they went on to find out is watching films is bad for children's minds. Although he is sharing the journey, in the body paragraph he did not share with us anecdote. All the writer was writing about was statistics and the information that they found, there was no true story of what the students were saying about the films. If I was writing a paper about children watching violent films or playing disturbing video games, I would talk to the children. In the body paragraphs, only adults were speaking and finding out the information. I would conduct a survey with students who have not watched violent films and children who have and see how they behave. In this article, it was written very well because Jones retrieved information from people who have worked with children. Although I would have included more of a child's aspect and a parents aspect instead of just ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Yossel: Novel Analysis Graphic novels have been seen as a controversial topic. Are they literature or are they part of a separate category of art? Many authors have stepped out of the stereotypical superhero graphic novel box and into a new world of using graphic novels for autobiographies, fiction stories, and historical accounts. The graphic novel Yossel tells the story of a young Jewish boy named Yossel who grew up in Poland in the early 1940's. He spends most of his days drawing superheroes and aspiring to become the illustrator for a comic book company in the future. However, one day in Poland the Nazi's arrive to bring his world of dreams to a sudden halt. Yossel's entire family is taken to the Warsaw ghetto where he draws pictures to entertain the guards. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although many of the stories are valuable and even edifying, most do not contain the same literary content as the "classics." Many of the sentences are short, simple, and made primarily of dialogue. The story lacks in depth of written description, instead using pictures to relay the author's idea; The pictures are the primary method of telling a story in a graphic novel with words as the secondary force. Illustrators draw enough pictures that the reader is able to get an idea of the plot without reading a single word. Literature uses words as the primary force to convey the idea. The literary canon is made up of novels which essentially use the twists and turns of diction and syntax to communicate the depth of themes and purpose, not pictures. Although both of these types of books have to potential to be reinterpreted for generations and pulled apart to find themes and teachings that can be applied to the past, present, and future, only the typical novel can be considered ... • 6. Origins Of The Walking Dead Photo Essay – Origins of The Walking Dead For my ethnography project, I chose to study the fandom of The Walking Dead. For the purpose of this paper, I will refer to The Walking Dead as a comic, a video game, and a TV show series. The focus of this ethnography is to understand how the comic book culture influences many fans. Since the series is based on a graphic novel series, and some of the fans are schooled in comic culture; they arrive with literacy in comic storytelling. Others who are not fans may recognize the visually and narrative of zombie films, in the horror genre after 1968's Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead. Yet many Walking Dead fans appear to have migrated to the zombie tale without any particular connection to the comic book storytelling, or significant fascination, and the series' fandom illuminates how an apocalyptic imagination has expanded into popular culture. The Walking Dead fandom has changed by geek standard. The Walking Dead has nearly all the classic of the 21st– century geek fandom: in this picture, it shows you the evolution of graphic imaginary has changed to attracted plenty of fans. The rating success has produce games, cars, and toys of the Walking Dead. The narrative extends over a vast range of official principles and the fan forms alike: its marketing team reaches out into nearly every popular culture. • 7. Summary Of Mat Johnson's Incognegro Different kinds of art is displayed everywhere, from our daily lives, all the way to our books. In Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics, he found an interesting theory of how art and words evolved over time. Before, art and words easily went hand in hand, but as time progressed, art slowly grew apart from words and now, each component is evolving into its own category (McCloud 145–146). Even though some comics demonstrated this theory, words and art still created an extraordinary combination and made a huge impact in the literature world. Incognegro, written by Mat Johnson, is a historical comic based on the 1930's time period to display the racial discrimination and harassment between African Americans and Whites. In doing so, the story consistently ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Michaela starts discussing about a flashback of how she was becoming ready for what would happen next. By taking a closer look, it's easily displayed on how the narration matches the artwork as Michaela is standing as well as speaking strong and proud by demanding for a confrontation. She states how she was "taking care of business" (Johnson 1.53.1) based on the tensions between the two races, blacks and whites. Michaela is also holding a shotgun on one hand while her shadows are illustrated behind her, demonstrating her point. With this kind of illustration and different kinds of text icons, this panel establishes a perfect example of an interdependent technique of storytelling as it blends narration and the thought in the moment as one. Interdependent panels fuse words and art together in hopes to convey the message intended, despite if one component empowers the other or not (McCloud 155). By using the interdependent panel technique, it forces words and artwork to run into each other so readers can understand as well as interact with the text. Incognegro contains different kinds of interdependent panels as the plot of the story heavily focuses on consistent time changes, whether it's be the past or present. By Johnson bringing this type of word and art combination, it allocated this piece of work to be powerful as well as memorable due to his tasteful ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Gerard Jones Violent Media Is Good For Kids Violent Media is Good for Kids, by Gerard Jones was written on Wednesday, June 28th, 2000. It was published on the website, www.motherjones.com to present the positive effects some children receive from violent comic books, cartoons, graphic novels, rap music, and video games. The author, Gerard Jones, was introduced as a renowned comic–book author. The introduction described the author's opinion as, "an argument by Jones that bloody videogames, gun–glorifying gangsta rap and other forms of 'creative violence' help far more children than they hurt, by giving kids a tool to master their rage." The articles asked if the author was insightful or insane. The article is an argument that supported the continued exposure of children to violent media ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The genre for the article is political because Jones purpose for writing the article was to promote and defend children's exposure to violent media. Jones audience for the article included both side of the argument and allowed for interaction on the website for discussion. Jones pathos used only positive examples for his argument and offered no acknowledgement of any negative effects of violent media's influence on children. Jones' logos used a series of successful stories as a logical argument for the author's claim made in the title. Jones waited until the end of his article to clarify that he was not arguing that violent entertainment was not harmless. This strategy builds the reader towards supporting Jones article. Jones success story, as well as his son's, lead the argument so that Jones has credibility as the author. Jones use of Moore gave a sense of expertise to the article, which was written in a happy tone that is less formal for a political article. Metamorphosis Grotesque Humor The graphic novel The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka and adapted by Peter Kuper, depicts the tale of a man, Gregor Samsa, who awakens from a dream to discover he is a giant insect. Samsa struggles to comprehend his transformation, while worrying about how his change will affect his family and how his manager shall respond. Samsa's overall situation is inane, and Kuper's illustrations provide risible scenes that stresses the ridiculousness, yet tragic story Kafka has created. By using grotesque humor in The Metamorphosis, Kafka highlights the presence of irony in the absurdities of daily life and conveys the idea that humor is a component in coping with the horrors of reality. Kuper's visual interpretations of Kafka's words emphasizes the humorous response of Samsa to his physical change, providing insight into Samsa's pitiful character. Kuper's panels ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The narrator speaks in the third person, focusing on Samsa's thoughts and actions and creating the impression that first hand accounts are being given, despite the narrator being limited to Samsa. The narrator is very straightforward, and this is evidently seen in the opening line, which abruptly throws the reader into the story and has no preceding context. The suddenness of the opening is bold, but is contrasted by the narrator's casual tone. The narrator demonstrates a lack of concern for Samsa's predicament, but so does Samsa for his own problem as reflected in the following pages. Kafka's choice of a nonchalant narrator, in addition to Samsa's underwhelming actions, conveys a sense of humor because of the passiveness used in response to the situation that would be interpreted as more serious and provoking of ... • 10. Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art Analysis Today, images surround us, and they can have a bigger interaction between their viewers than may be assumed. In Scott McCloud's book, "Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art", he relays the concept of simplification, and how to use it to bring more emphasis to the meaning of the drawing. In other words, McCloud is saying that through a process of breaking down a drawing to its rawest and most simplistic form, the piece itself becomes deeper in meaning. When looking at a finished image it should be apparent that the artist put thought into every detail, line, shape. When a final image looks simplistic, this is where the artist has succeeded in tricking the eye into believing the image is effortless when in fact it can in some cases be the exact... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By making a simplistic image as a logo or icon the directed focus brings attention to the details that the artist saw as important and most relatable for the product being sold, company, or just image in general to the selected audience. McCloud uses an example of breaking down the image to make the image more applicable in his example of the simplification process, "by stripping down an image to its essential 'meaning', an artist can amplify that meaning in a way that realistic art can't", (McCloud, 30). McCloud makes a point in the statement that realistic art in these terms isn't as relatable to everyone because it is too specific, and this means that not everyone can easily relate. The point of an icon or logo is to make it easy to relate to, understand, or both in order to make the targeted audience remember the design and recognize it in the future. Going back to the example of Figure 1 the simple design is something that is easy to remember and relate to because of the familiarity that is referenced by the design. • 11. DC Comicss Influence On Popular Culture BOOM! POW! ZAP! When these phrases are heard or read, comics are most likely the things that come to mind. Made popular by television and the selling of comics in general, franchises like DC Comics have risen to the top in modern day popular culture. Many people, however, are not aware of how much of a social impact they have had. The DC Comics franchise has been present for a very long time, and within this period of time has had a great impact on society; evolving with the world around it, and influencing popular culture with its use of technology inspired by real scientific advances and its vernacular. Brainiac was the super intelligent villain and enemy of Superman in the Action Comics series. Another more obvious example of DC Comics' influence on colloquial phrases is the term Kryptonite. As many know, kryptonite is a glowing green mineral from the planet of Krypton, and is the weakness of Superman. People may use the term when talking about someone's weakness. Kryptonite is somewhat like the modern day Achilles' heel. Apart from influencing common terminology, technological advancements have influenced tools used by the superheroes in DC Comics. Wonder Woman was created by psychologist and advocate for women's potentials, William Moulton Marston. One of Wonder Woman's well known tools is her Lasso of Truth, which compels anyone who is caught in it to tell the truth. • 12. Analysis Of The Poem ' Fandom Of The Walking Dead ' For my ethnography project, I chose to study the fandom of The Walking Dead. For the purpose of this paper, I will refer to The Walking Dead as a comic, a video game, and a TV series. Yet, many Walking Dead fans appear to have migrated to the zombie tale without any particular connection to the comic book storytelling, or... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The narrative became so popular that it has reached into video games and novelized interpretations. The series does depart from the comic's origin narrative in some forms. Introducing new characters, such as the Dixon brothers, is one example. Yet, in many ways, the series transforms the tale more through the appreciation of the apocalypse and compelling a visual story about how human face disaster. The series' popularity raises the ethnographic question of, why people are drawn to this particular tale and fandom community. The Walking Dead fandom perhaps on some levels harbors a deep–seated fascination with macabre that has often been projected onto the imagination of supernatural creatures. The word zombie comes from numerous folklore traditions. It is best described as a lack of moral judgment and self–control. In this picture, you can see Michonne exploiting these two zombies through a legion amount of zombies. Michonne was trapped and running out of food when she noticed walkers do not attack one another. Eventually she came up with a plan to survive. She could camouflage her way through without any worries. Michonne hacks off the arms and lower jaws of the zombies. Then she chains them up by their necks to use them as escorts for an escape. The reasons behind this method are simple. Without their arms and mouth, the zombies essentially lose their purpose. • 13. Gerard Jones : Violent Media Is Good For Kids In the writing of Gerard Jones "Violent Media is Good for Kids" is a very interesting essay in which he describes how violent media can help kids to overcome obstacles. Also, he describes that some kids that used to be shy become outgoing by reading comics, he makes his point by saying the kids who reads this comic, get confident by identifying with the superheroes of the stories that they read. He gave examples of kids that were treated with violent media, but I am not truly sure if this is effective in kids or not because in the examples that he gave needs more details on how they become effective in helping these kids with their problems, also this point will be more persuade if the author supports his examples with information of the parents of these kids that believed violent media is good. Gerard Jones fails to give more details about how the kids that were treated with violent media had a positive attitude towards violence. Jones argument on how violent media helped kids that were deprived of scenes of violence, he argued that were more positive towards these scenes. Jones gave an example of his son when he was in first grade. He said that his son was afraid of climbing trees, so he decided to read his son comics of Tarzan who are known for as rich in combat and bright with flashing knives. He says that after reading this comic for two weeks, his son gets courage of started climbing trees. Jones is telling the reader that just because his son gets identify with Tarzan, this comic helps him to overcome the fear of climbing trees. This assumption with little details makes his essay less persuade because he did no point out the details of how this comic really helps his son. This example is a good hook to the readers, but the lack on details makes it less convincing. Not only he gave an example of his son, but he also gave an example of a psychologist who make a researched with urban kids, but the deficiency in details makes his argument weak and less convincing. • 14. Analysis Of Alan Moore And Dave Gibbon's Watchmen When read with a critical eye, the world of superhero comics often offers a lens with which we can examine society, our values, the meaning of justice, and the role of the individual in regards to the greater community. If all of this information is garnered from critical reading, then the way in which the medium of comics constructs these meanings will reflect an embrace or a rejection of the common symbols and ideology of it's source culture. In the case of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbon's 1987 graphic novel, Watchmen, the second approach is used, as Moore's writing draws upon the common cultural understanding of superheroes and exaggerates or tweaks them, exposing their underlying ideals. The emphasis of these characteristics coupled with the prevalence and narrative authority of superheroes constitute a type of hegemonic masculinity, defined as the "culturally exalted form of masculinity," which is linked to institutional power and the subjugation of women (Aulette and Wittner 527). Hegemonic masculinity suggests that there is one correct way to hold power, and that it is hypermasculine, a standard reinforced by dominant trends in comic book portrayals of superheroes. Any grand deviation from these stringent ideals creates a subordinated masculinity, one that challenges the dominant narrative of hypermasculinity, though often throwing into question the identity of the man in question (8). On the surface, the characters in Watchmen seem to bend to these ideals, but as each of them lack or challenge key aspects of hypermasculinity they serve to question both its importance and the misogynistic basis of hegemonic masculinity. The physicality and violence of the hypermasculine hero is emphasized in the character of Edward Blake, the costumed crime fighter known as The Comedian, but this emphasis serves not to glorify him but to expose our acceptance of vigilante violence, especially when abstracted from morality. Just like in Vampirella, it had some horror in it, but was more focused on being sexual and outlandish. One particular comic book series I was quite fond of was The Sandman by award–winning writer Neil Gaiman. What really got my attention was the character Death; the sister of the main protagonist Sandman. Death is both the lord and personification of all death and life, but she is the complete opposite of what people see her image as, an image of a skeleton with scythe and a scary black robe. We do not know the true image of death, but why depict awoman? Why not just a figure of a skeleton? Is it too complicated to show Death as a skeleton figure or a mere shadow, like in the film The Frighteners? It is not scary and I find it sexist to have an image of a dark and strange figure be a woman. This is similar to the Infinity Gauntlet storyline published by Marvel where Thanos, the main antagonist, is on a quest to please Death herself in order to win over her heart and cause destruction all over the galaxy. Again, another personification of death is portrayed as a female, seeming to signify that women are far more ferocious and scary than men are. Gesture relates to my organization because the employees want the customers to feel as welcome as possible. Noticing the customer, addressing them with an enthusiastic greeting, and a handshake helps the customer feel welcomed and free to ask questions. Gestures relate to my volunteering because, when I addressed the customers with an enthusiastic greeting, offered my help, and gave a handshake, it gave the customers the idea of feeling comfortable to ask me questions, and a few of the customers told me that I am well mannered for giving such a profound greeting when they entered the establishment. Gestures relate to my experience because, it assisted me in interacting with the customers properly so I would not feel like I am bothering them, but they would know my name, know that they may ask me questions, and I would feel comfortable knowing how to approach the customers. • 18. Maus by Art Spiegelman Essay Why are comics not appreciated as much as the dry narratives of novels in the literary world? A comic is composed of symbols to express concepts shared by all people in their own social environment, and provide more tools than conventional art to truly show artistic intention. Comics exist to expose the ethnic representations that seek to control the development of collective perceptions, memories and emotions and especially fear by investigating the techniques through which this control is maintained. Spiegelman uses mice, cats, pigs and other animals to portray the victims and events in the Holocaust. He uses real features of human beings such as hands, feet and emotions to give the animals the full potential to relate to. Maus reveals that the characters portrayed as mice are being seen in sharper relief as human concerns in the world of mice. Spiegelman decided on interesting but possibly offensive use of different animals to use. The first type of animal which appears in this comic is the mouse (MausI:5). The form of mice is used to represent the Jewish people during the Holocaust and as of now too. The Polish police were involved in the arrest of innocent Jewish mice (27). The Polish people were pigs and Germans were represented as cats. The Germans' appearance as cats began to make sense in the way how cats chase, hunt and kill mice (33). This comic book was translated into an easily readable format to educate the history of the Holocaust to the younger generations. Second, the choice of a comic format serves as a vital aspect in the reader's understanding of the visual society and making awareness through generations as more attuned to the image than to the word. • 19. Comic Story In Literature Just like traditional literature, comic books can be analyzed through narrative, structure, and plot. Since the narrative is one of the prime factors in storytelling, comics must have a strong narrative. If there is no narrative, there is no story. Although, it's important to keep in mind that stories are still stories, whether you're reading A Tale of two Cities or Watchmen. After all, a good story can be told in any medium at all. With this in mind, while analyzing parts of the narrative, one can observe that the nature of the comic book's medium contributes to the storytelling of good stories. Also, comic books just like literature can be analyzed through plot. While plot is not the end all of narrative, a poor plot can certainly compromise the value of the narrative. Unlike literature books that can go on and on, the comic book storyline needs to be told in a limited number of pages, and its executed through the sequential images. Like it has been said many times before, "a picture says a thousand words", and in the case of comic books, the pictures tell a story just as well or if not better than a lot of written words. Take this example from The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman: That whole passage of The Graveyard Book was converted into one page. The climax is the third part which is typically the most exciting part. The climax in Blackhole can be seen when Chris begins to show that she has caught the bug because she has had sex unprotected so she goes into hiding in the woods. The manga's use of different speech bubbles conveys the intended language and emotions of Othello, as if it is being preformed rather than if it is simply read, thus putting forth a product that accurately depicts Othello in a similar fashion to which the play originally was intended to be viewed. One of the ways Shakespeare's language is conveyed in the manga is through the use of normal speech bubbles. Throughout the manga speech bubbles are the main way that Shakespeare's language is presented. These speech bubbles are simply round text blocks, which may or may not contain a line pointing in the direction of the character that is speaking. The speech bubbles are quite effective in conveying Shakespeare's language, as they are easy to read and clearly indicate which character is speaking. And let's face it, almost every adult out has a favorite genre that can be shared in a graphic novel. I for one love comics with Anti–heroes and Sci–fi/Fantasies. One famous graphic novel that shows the power of illustration is Maus by Art Spiegelman, which illustrates the darkest points of the Holocaust with a perspective of mice (Jews) being suppressed by cats (Nazis). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I myself enjoy writing and creating characters, but one of the greatest challenges is making molding their image with words. Even if I have a perfect visual of my character in mind and very descriptive choice of words, my readers will never see my character the same way I do. I might be able to attempt adding enough description in my text too help the readers see them, but that would take pages and nobody can keep an interest in a story if it takes a whole chapter to describe a character or a scene. But, if I use graphic illustration instead, I can share my characters along with the setting of the story and every crucial detail within a portion of a page. • 30. Kathryn Strong Hansen's Essay 'In Defense Of Graphic Novels' Angie Rodriguez Patrick Vogelpohl English 120 17 December 2014 In the essay, "In Defense of Graphic Novels", Kathryn Strong Hansen explains the different opinions about using graphic novels in a classroom. When most people hear of a graphic novel, they assume it's a comic book and that it has no relevance in a classroom. Because they have pictures, they also assume that they are meant for children. Hansen explains, however, that students can analyze graphic novels the same way they would a prose–only novel. She also states that low level reading students could benefit from reading graphic novels. Because they can be used to help struggling students, students who are doing well believe that graphic novels are too easy of a read. It could also ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Graphic novels prevent this confusion from happening. With the pictures that go along with the text, students can understand exactly what the author is saying. Graphic novelist, David Small, confirms this in his interview by Julia Tindell. He says, "I know that the text is there to tell what the pictures can't and vise versa. They augment one another" (Small). For example in Blankets, there is a part where the main character, Craig, goes out to where he and his younger brother would go out to play when they were little. They remember about a cave that they had found once but every day they went back to it, it would get smaller and smaller until one day, it just disappeared. Craig then says, "But that memory is so dream–like–too eerie and beautiful and cryptic to be true" (538). From that text, you would most likely assume that the memory he was talking about is the one with the cave. By the image in Fig. 1, you can clearly see that the memory that he is really talking about is the memory of his old love interest, Reina. The images that come with the text really make it easier to grasp what the author's ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 31. Descriptive Essay : Capturing Invisibility Casey Hollm Professor O'Gorman ENWR 106–21 4 November 2014 Capturing Invisibility I came to Montclair to have the opportunity to study fine art. As an aspiring artist, I am always searching for means of inspiration. When I read a book, I have a lot of trouble remaining focused after the first ten pages. In affect, it typically takes me several different days and time blocks to complete the book. Because Invisible People is a graphic novel, I was able to not only easily keep my attention on the story, but also genuinely enjoy the plot. I sat down during a rainy day and read the whole novel in under an hour. Being provided pictures and drawings while I read a novel helps me connect with what is going on and allows me to metaphorically put myself in the story. The main problem with The Things They Carried is that it is just like every other book I have ever read. Before reading Invisible People, I had never even thought about picking up a comic book, or any form of graphic novel. To my surprise, I had a lot of fun interpreting the story line while I analyzed the well–thought out illustrations. The Things They Carried is an in–depth novel depicting life, love, death and war. Although it contains a compelling message, there is no spark that entices me to continue reading more of it than I was assigned. Fortunately, because of the expressive artwork in the graphic novel Invisible People I was able to acquire enough sentimentality for both novels. The way that a story is ... • 32. Picture Book Research Paper Books change with readers as they age from a child into an adult. Children start off with simple picture books or short stories that hold many images and grabs their attention. Picture books that teach them about their surrounds and other subjects. As they age, books grow in intensity and more complex from adventures into mysteries. Young adults, teenagers, tend to read more difficult novels that contain meaningful stories or teaches them about worldly issues. Comic books and graphic novels are loved by all ages for their creative illustrations to their spontaneous storylines. Overall, what people read affect their lives, influence their growth and impact their character. I am no different. As a reader, the books I have read throughout my life have impacted me to a degree and affected my character in some way. As a young child, my reading started off in China where I was born. The books I read were simple books that were meant for me to learn the language. Therefore, I started off my literature background with mandarin picture books. Those books pertained to what I liked more than what I needed to learn. Also, I was very much into folklore stories that surrounded China and Japan. • 33. Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World The book, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, is the second book in the Scott Pilgrim graphic novel series by Bryan Lee O'Malley. The basic storyline consists of the main character, Scott Pilgrim, fighting for the love of his new girlfriend, Ramona Flowers. Scott is an unemployed 23 year old that plays in a band called 'Sex Bob Omb' from Canada. Ramona is an American, newly moved to Canada, that works for Amazon.ca. Scott must fight all seven of Ramona's ex–boyfriends so they can continue dating. (This book is very peculiar in that there is a space highway that Ramona and Scott meet in Scott's dream. I must also point out that Scott has never lost a fight and is a reigning champ). The first book, Scott Pilgrim's Precious Little Life, featured the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. The Cartoon ' The Killing Joke ' Imagine this, a demented man dressed like a clown escapes prison only to shoot a woman in the stomach and rape her. Now imagine that he kidnaps her father, strips him naked, and torture him physically as well as mentally by showing him the pictures of his daughter slowly dying while being rapped. You might be asking what horror movie this is from? It is actually from a wildly popular comic book called "The Killing Joke". Although appearing to be childish, comic books show many adult themes such as violence, gore, and pornography, thereby making them unsuitable for children. Violence is a common theme seen in many different types of entertainment. We see it all the time in movies, T.V. shows, and video games. However, when there is violence present in comic books they tend to go beyond what we expect. It could vary from a simple punch, to a person having their brains spill out from being beaten with a barbwire bat. In comics such as Kickass 2, the antagonist kills at gunpoint four defenseless little children. He then continues to break into an apartment, kill a man, beat the man's girlfriend, and rape her with his three friends (Meylikhov). There are so many types of entertainment available nowadays that contains violence. However, there is always some kind of bounder or line not to be crossed. Comics have not only past that line but have accelerated past it. They gone to great lengths that other forms of media would have been shut down for by programs such as the FCC. ... • 35. World War II Comic Books Failed Man has utilized graphics since before writing was invented to communicate their thoughts and feelings, and while for a period, the combination of both image and written word remained underutilized, the core idea behind 'comics' or 'graphic novels' continued to develop. The subject of these graphics range from early humans attempting to communicate information about animal migration patterns painted on the walls of caves, to mythological stories painted onto the surface of pottery. These images are made to be informative, or entertaining, but in general fail to deliver a message that moves beyond the delivery of information, and between good and bad. In both pre and post–World War II comic books failed to be much more than entertaining propaganda. Yet, eventuallycomics shifted towards darker, more psychological themes, and with this change in style came additional recognition and popularity for graphic stories as a medium. Following these developments, many have claimed that the driving force behind the economic and critical success of graphic stories created in this era was primarily due to the improvements in production values and sheer mass of content created. However, it is more likely that the change in subject matter affected the perception of comics due to the ability to evoke emotion in a fashion that just words and just pictures could not do by themselves. The graphic narrative's unique ability to demand the reader become a witness to the horrors of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Analysis Of The Book ' Comic Party Poster ' Essay Genres: Comedy, Slice of Life, Manga comic–party–poster Summary: Just when high school nears the close, a Japanese student named Kazuki and his girlfriend, is pulled by his scheming best friend Taishi into the world of fan comics. As Kazuki's obsession with finishing his comic in time for the next convention threatens his schoolwork and his relationships, he must decide how he will use his time or risk losing Mizuki. STORY – 4.1 Tragically, it has been a long time since I watched the show, and clearly my methods changed over the years. From the fragments I do remember comes a great, clean story of one named Kazuki and his introduction into Manga (specifically doujinshi) that takes us on a journey through an industry. When most people think of Manga in America, they might compare it to Marvel Comics, which is somewhat misleading. Manga is not reserved for super–heroes nor to trite concepts that may be disgusting in America (see The Mask) but yet never quite puts us inside. This is not to say Comic Party attempts this, rather it expresses the deeply woven nature of the Manga universe that should give any foreigner a pause before stereotyping the industry negatively. This is perhaps the biggest appeal and weakness to Comic Party, in that as an educational comedy it seeks to balance self–deprecating jokes with giving its audience a better comprehension of the work involved, all while not coming off as boring or uninspired. Whether it succeeds is largely up to you, however ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. The Dark Knight Returns, By Jorge Luis Borges Essay Writer, Jorge Luis Borges says, "The things that are said in literature are always the same. What is important is the way they are said." Literature is such a broad, all encompassing term that much is lost in translation. This is part of the reason behind the ongoing brawl: what qualifies as literature? In the case of graphic novels, they are often cast aside by critics, deemed definitively inferior and lacking intellectual merit. However, this assumption does not hold up in today's world of literary work. Genres and mediums evolve every minute of every day, continuously changing the game. Even considering the evolution of traditional novels in modern society challenges the original denotation of literature. "As a consequence, the traditional characteristics [lose] their importance as the defining criteria of literary works of art" (Breuer para. 12). Due to the evolving world of literature, the definition of such must evolve as well, claiming a few necessary guidelines but fluctuating as required. The graphic novel, The Dark Knight Returns, can be definitively classified as a work of literature through Frank Miller's approach to written language application, character establishment, and plot development. Perhaps the most inherent part of The Dark Knight Returns' literary qualification is the very use of written language. In simplest terms, literature is defined as "written works." One must not be swayed then by the comic aspect of graphic novels because the presence of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Maus Literary Analysis When we think of the word literature, we think of Shakespeare's story or Harper Lee's story and take the text too seriously. For example, listing down some examples of literature, more or less the lists we've made do not mention any graphic novels. However, the graphic novel entitled Maus by Art Spiegelman is a story about a young man asking his dad to relive his days as a Holocaust survivor, which backs the idea that graphic novels can be treated as a piece of literature. The Maus series can be a great example because the plot, sub–plot, themes and characters are greatly weaved together. These types of novels should be considered a form literature because it expresses the story better and that it's still profound. Graphic novels, like Maus, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many people associate colorful pages full of images with childishness, and therefore to be taken less seriously as a work of literature or with no lasting literary merit. However, the way that it portrays what the Jews endured during the Holocaust enlightens the readers. The drawings, which depicted gruesome and inhumane scenes like being beaten and starvation, created a different experience as opposed to novels because the images are much more expressive than words. In addition, You can see what the author himself is trying to show through the illustrations. For example, some readers have troubles visualizing a scene or place, but the pictures make up for it. This pulls even the reluctant or disabled readers since it helps them understand the text better. In Maus I, Spiegelman shows a sketch of how Vladek and his friends hid from the Nazis. In order to avoid being caught, they "made a brick wall filled high with coal. Behind this wall we could be a little safe" (110). Some people wouldn't be able to understand what Vladek meant, so the drawing assists them along the story. This makes them comprehend what's happening because the pictures expresses the text.
