The College of Corpus Christi and the Blessed Virgin Mary
The College of Corpus Christi and the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Founded 1352 by The Guild of Corpus Christi and The Guild of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Sister
College – Corpus Christi College Oxford.
Men and Women – Undergraduates 253 Postgraduates 220.
Corpus Christi is unique in the university for being the only college founded by 'town' and not
'gown' – in other words established by town's people and not the ruling class or clergy. The Guild of
Corpus Christi and the Guild of the Blessed Virgin Mary pooled resources and were granted a
licence by Edward III to build what was the eighth Cambridge college, in 1352.
City mayor reminds college of its roots
The original court was modest and supported a master and two fellows. They would have studied
theology and canon law, along with their responsibilities as chaplains to the guild. The town's
people, led by the mayor, stormed the college in 1381, reminding it of its roots, protesting about the
hated 'candle rents', levied upon its domestic properties. This led to further peasant protests that
King Richard soon brought to a brutal conclusion.
Trumpington Street
Corpus is one of a cluster of impressive colleges and buildings facing Trumpington Street, the south
approach road into central Cambridge. On the east side is Corpus and Pembroke while on the west
side is the fabulous Neoclassical Fitzwilliam Museum along side Peterhouse and St Catherine's
College (directly opposite Corpus). Students have a three–minute walk to the market

Campus Crime : The Dark Side Of The Ivory Tower
Over the last two and half decades, campus crime as a social issue has come to the forefront of
public attention and is regularly reported in both print and electronic media. Specific and general
legislation has also been passed in order to prevent campus crime from occurring as well as to
educate those who are either in danger of victimization or have the ability to prevent victimization
and assure that justice is done. However, campus crime is not a new issue in regard to its
occurrence, only in that it has finally attracted both public and media attention. Furthermore, Sloan
III and Fisher (2011) suggest that this movement to recognize and prevent the occurrence of crime
on college and university campuses (known throughout this book as the dark side of the ivory tower)
did not pop up overnight. Instead, they argue that through a long and arduous process, four different
activist groups were able to socially construct the problem as a proper and pertinent social issue, and
influence legislation designed to curb campus crime, and hold those responsible, accountable for
their action or inaction. Before exploring the process of constructing campus crime as a social issue,
Sloan III and Fisher (2011) found it necessary to report on the history of campus crime in American
universities as the majority of the public assumes that campus crime is a relatively new phenomenon
when in fact, campus crimes has been a prominent (yet not very visible) issue since the founding of

Enroll in a Closed Campus Essay
Internationally there are many college campuses that are closed so that the productivity as well as
the safety of the school are increased. A closed campus, in Asian countries such as China and South
Korea, are set up where walls are built around the college campus so that only students or faculty
may enter the premises. The students of closed campuses probably have less stress and higher
grades, thus higher productivity. Albeit students have more freedom to do whatever they wish to do
on an open campus, students are developing a need to enroll in a college with a closed campus due
to, all needs or wants being available on campus, less traffic, and the overall safety for students and
faculty. Having an open campus would help students, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Students who leave campus to go to retail stores for products can also find those goods on campus in
places such as the café, book store, or gifts shops. Common needs such as poster boards, pencils,
pens, and highlighters are always available to purchase in book stores so that students do not have to
leave campus to buy necessary school supplies. Commodities such as restaurants are available
around the clock. Many famous restaurants, though many being fast food, set up shops within
college campuses. Students can enjoy a wide variety of options ranging from pizza to ethnic cuisines
right there on campus all day long. College students eternally need a place to rest so that they may
relax after a long day's work. Often, students go to the quad and play a game of catch with friends.
Students can go to the recreational "rec" center where swimming pools, hot tubs, workout machines,
and gaming stations are available at the students' disposal. Having areas where students may relax
around campus is the better alternative, opposed to having to leave campus to relax. Resources that
students need or want are better off located near students so that they may enjoy them immediately.
Many four year universities students bring vehicles with them on move–in days. These students
keep their cars at the universities parking lots, making them crowded. Vehicle traffic on campuses

Social Media Negatives
Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat are just a few social media websites and applications
that have transformed the World Wide Web. Social media is defined as websites or applications that
allow online users to produce and share content. Of the 7.6 billion global population, 2.46 billion of
them actively use social media. Many use social networking to stay in contact with others and
access information more quickly. Although the proposed reasons for social media use appear
positive, they present many negatives. One should limit his or her social media use due to its

A Transition Of Fascination And Fear Essay
Introduction – A Transition of Fascination to Fear Historically change has been vital in the
emergence of American higher education. John Thelin (2011) expresses "The single most change in
American higher education at the end of the 19th century was that college going became fashionable
and prestigious" (p. 156). Prior to WWII, the public romanticized college going as a means to
promote social mobility. Throughout the evolution of higher education, individuals ' views
transitioned from fascination to fear. A sense of fear was instilled in students as they became aware
colleges were not exempt from violence. The transition–inspired legislation of the Clery Act, which
puts practices into place to create safe communities. Has regulation of the Clery Act benefited
student populations? Do higher education institutions exclude certain populations by complying
with the act? Throughout this paper, I will address these questions and critically analyze the Clery
Acts significance within higher education.
The History and Amendments to the Clery Act Before enactment of the Campus Security Act, there
had been a multitude of particularly violent crimes on college campuses, which threatened the
security higher education institutions assured (101st United States Congress, 1990). Due to this fact,
congress proposed a disclosure of campus security policy and campus crime. Both public and
private institutions that received federal funds were required to prepare and distribute annual

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Private Universities
Do you prefer the public or the private university in Kuwait? This may be a critical question for
many students. Parents may fall under confusion to choose between to enroll their kids in public or
private universities. The parents try to compare the advantages and the disadvantages of those types
of universities and then they outweigh these advantages and the disadvantages. After that parents
choose the type of universities for their kids. Although some parents may prefer public universities

Many people prefer to enroll their kids in the private universities to have better employment in the
future. Also, there is a reputation that the private universities help enter the professional and
academic world. Graduates of private universities are always preferred by any potential employers.
This is because graduates of these private universities are supposed to have better education. The
private universities tend to have competitive admissions processes than those of the public
universities (Ban, 2012). So, private universities keep a high degree of academic excellence and
they are reputed by this advantage. The private universities have their great prestige so this helps
graduates in the marketplace. The universities have positive weight in the students minds of the
future potential employers. The employers always like to hire students graduated from private
universities as they know that such universities present highly qualified curricula. These private
universities make students capable of getting good jobs in the future. These private universities
provide with effective classroom resources as well as strong technology (Neil Kokemuller, 2014).
So, the private universities are more prestigious. This may depend highly on the university itself.
This can be an advantage for students if they began to seek jobs after their graduation (Drinkworth,

Campus Shootings Essay
College Campuses in the Line of Sight
We all hear about mass shooting where a number of people are killed and we pray that we are never
caught in a situation like the one at Virginia Tech or Oikos University. But the likelihood that it
happens at your school, your kids school, or your friends school is at an all time high. From 2000 to
2010 nearly 70 people were killed in college campus shootings in the United States. This number
more than doubles the number of killing from the 25 years prior to 2000. Not only are their more
shooting but there are a proliferating number of sexual assaults happening on college campuses, in
2009 alone the number of sexual assault on college campuses was nearly 2,600 (Arrigo 120). This
combined with mass media coverage has generated passionate debates on how to best stop mass
shootings and other violent crimes on college campuses. Many pro–gun activists have started to
push for and endorse bills allowing students and faculty to conceal carry handguns on campuses.
Campus–carry is a relatively new phenomenon and there is little to no evidence to corroborate the
idea that it increases campus security. Those who have not gone through rigorous instructional
courses, like police officers, will be unable to stop a mass shooting, sexual assaults, or other violent
crimes on college campuses. Instead, allowing students to carry will increase crime rates on
campuses and will result in more fatalities due to guns(Ultius). This is why students should not be

Why We Are Better Than Colleges
Senior year is the time for making choices. Some of these choices are going to be small and others
affect the rest of our lives. The biggest and most important choice is which college to attend. Do you
want to stay close to home or go far away? The biggest question is what size of college is right for
you. My two top choices are University of Bluffton and University of Findlay. I think they are both
great colleges but one is definitely a better fit for me. The University of Findlay is a better fit for me
over University of Bluffton because it is close to home, but is still large enough to give me the large
campus feel I am looking for in a college. The hardest part of going to college is the expenses today.
Most students have to take out loans which leaves them in debt all of their lives. University of
Bluffton's tuition is $44,008 ("CollegeSimply." ) which is slightly more than University of Findlay
which costs $42,335 ("Cost of Attending the University of Findlay ." ). The difference is $1,673,

Athletes College Athletes
Should collegiate athletes get paid? Statistics show that an average college athlete spends 20 hours
per week on their sport (University of Notre Dame). All the time dedicated to their sport takes away
time to complete homework, eat, work, and rest. College athletes should receive compensation for
the amount of time dedicated to their sport, for the amount of revenue brought into the university or
college, to be able to better support themselves and their family and benefit from the profit made by
apparel company contracts with the university or college.
Playing a sport in college, especially at Division 1 schools are very time consuming between
practicing and playing games. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) allows 20
hours of practice a week for athletes, but practices often last longer ("How do College Athletes...").
Collegiate athletes often do not have enough time to set aside for their classes. Many of these
athletes are spending more time playing their sport than managing their schoolwork. If the athletes
do not show up to every practice, then they tend to feel uncommitted and disincluded. According to
an NCAA survey on college athletes, the most demanding sports are Division 1 and Division 2
baseball. Division 1 basketball and football are very demanding as well (O'Shaughnessy). All
athletes have to make sure they establish their priorities for their sport and academics. College
athletes should finish their most difficult tasks first, then they can

PRICE
Price is the most important factor in doing business especially in a service industry. It is because
there is a tight competition in a service industry. So marketer need to consider a price that is similar
or even lower than the market price. This is to help the industry to penetrate into the market as
customer usually will consider price as the most important factor in selecting their service provider.
Marketer can increase the price only if the company can provide better service than other
competitors.

The Effects Of Viral Load On Hiv Essay
On November 10, 2016, a new report was released to the public about a special type of microchip
that can test the amount of viral load of HIV in less than 30 minutes. This test can be completely self
administered. The user can check the viral load amount in the bloodstream by placing a drop of their
blood on the microchip, which looks similar to that of a USB drive. This microchip is then inserted
into a computer, tablet, or other handheld device. The results can be achieved in less than 30
minutes, and many users had an answer in about 21 minutes with 95% accuracy. The current method
requires sending blood to a laboratory and can take at least three days, if not longer, to detect the
viral load present. This microchip can help to monitor those patients who are receiving treatment,
but do not have access to local clinics. Researchers hope that this device can specifically help in
Sub–Saharan Africa and other rural areas which may not have easy access to testing facilities nearby
(Imperial College London: 2016). This new microchip received a lot of publicity for a few major
reasons. While it is not currently commercially available, it provided a "proof of concept" for a
point–of–care method for the detection of the viral load of HIV present. This is the first report of an
on–chip detection of RNA via microchip. While there are a few similar products that are close to
market or in development, they all require lab equipment and a desktop instrument to find results,

What Are Advantages And Disadvantages Of India
Indian higher education is not only large in scope but complex in its working and evolution. One
indicator is existence of four different types of universities depending on who funds them and
regulates them. For example, Deemed to be Universities come under the purview of UGC and are
mostly funded by private resources. They were also in controversy for corruption and qualitative
deficiencies for profiteering. This also tainted the name of some of the better quality private Deemed
to be Universities. Given the regulatory and media attention to the deficiencies with Deemed to be
Universities, Private Universities gained attraction. This is evident from their growth from 100 to
140 in less than a year as compared to no growth of Deemed to be Universities in the same period.
The private universities are working hard to attract students away from central and state universities
by offering differentiated courses incorporating features like triple mains, super–specializations,

the necessary learning skills that accompany this. The two are combined in a single system referred

Animal Experimentation At University College London
I. Introduction a. Attention getter device: This is a picture of a kitten that was forced to undergo
animal experimentation However, this is only one of the 11 at University College London that had
part of its skull removed for a three–day round of experiments. The first day involved the kitten
being paralyzed as electrodes and probes were put into their brains to be able to measure what they
saw. The second day involved a plate being screwed into the skulls of the 11 kittens and they were
placed in a prone position with clamps on their backs and above the pelvis. The third day involved
incisions being made to insert electrodes into the nerves around the spine and rib cage, exposing a
large portion of their spinal cord. Finally, part of the skull was removed so an electrode could be
inserted to measure brain activity. All of these cats were given anesthesia, and more than half were
given a fatal overdose. b. Give the audience a reason to listen: Everyone in this room has had an

Group Observation Strategies
Ellie is a 14–year–old 9th grader. Ellie just moved from a small town in Oklahoma to Phoenix,
Arizona. Ellie has an older sister, and two younger brothers. Ellie loves art, and can be found
doodling all the time. Ellie also likes to listen to music, and has her headphones in whenever she has
the opportunity. Ellie likes to keep to herself, and doesn't often talk with other students. Ellie does
really well at completing work independently, and tests on grade level. I am worried about Ellie,
because her introverted behavior is beginning to cause disruptions with other classmates. Group
work is required in my class, and not talking with others in class is affecting her grade. Other
students do not want to work with Ellie, because she doesn't talk with others or "pull her weight" in
group assignments. Ellie's goals are to increase her participation in discussions, and interact

the goal, or a punishment for not reaching the goal. I would choose dependent group contingency for
Ellie. This means that Ellie or her group would earn a privilege by demonstrating appropriate group
behavior. I think this would work well for Ellie, because it would raise her social status with her
peers. Her peers would become encouragers for her. This could also help Ellie connect with her
peers, and build positive relationships. If effective, this strategy will help Ellie increase her

Should University Increase Tuition Fee?
Should university or college increase tuition fee?
Should the university increase tuition fee? Currently, a debate about whether universities and
colleges should increase their tuition fees has drawn a lot of attention and discussion among both the
students and the faculty. According to the article, "The Struggle for Public Education in California:

With the economic globalization gaining momentum, it goes without saying that the competition in
the job market will only become more and more fierce. And in today's world, without a proper
education, it is very hard for us to land a job in the future. No wonder that education has long been a
hot issue in all countries across the globe. No one would deny the fact that there still exist large
room for improvement in the education system, and the most talked about is how to promote
education equity. It is of great significance because education equity safeguards the basic human
rights of the vast number of students and more importantly, it is an effective means for mankind to
promote social equity. However, if the universities and colleges increase their tuition fees, then they
are setting back what we have already achieved for education equity. When we speak of education
equity, we need to pay close attention to the affordability of education to students who are from a
medium– and low–income families. Many people would take for granted that international students
must all come from very well–off backgrounds. It is absolutely not true. Many of them are from
very ordinary families, but their parents would rather spend all their money on their kids' education

college distinguishes it from other schools you 're considering?
2"Why are you interested in our college?"
Like many of the most common interview questions, this one seems like a no–brainer. After all, if
you are interviewing at a school, you have presumably done some research and know why you are
interested in the place.
Nevertheless, some answers to this question are better than others. Your answer should show that
you have specific and admirable reasons for attending the college. The following answers are not
likely to impress your interviewer:
"Your college is prestigious." "I 'll make lots of money with a degree from your college." "All my
friends are going to your college." "Your college is convenient and close to home." "My counselor
told me to apply." "You 're my safetly school."
The interviewer is hoping that you are interested in the college for reasons other than peer pressure
or convenience. Similarly, if you say you applied entirely because of a parent or counselor 's

family cannot afford the typical university or community college tuition. He describes key ideas on
how to make college more readily available the average student in American. Although, in the
article Steve Cohen uses some ambiguous language in his key reasons the conclusion to his issue is
very convincing.
In Steve Cohen article, "How to Make College Cheaper," he clearly states the issue and the
conclusion. The descriptive issue is stated in the title, "Why or How to Make College Cheaper."
Cohen states the conclusion later on in the article in the concluding paragraph. The conclusion is to
invest in tuition deferment and by shifting the risk of student default from the government to the
college. Thus, the issue and the conclusion could be stated as follows: College can be made cheaper

Cohen uses these additives to get his points across. I was not really sure if he is trying to be

substantial. Instead of using the word traditional to describe loan programs I suggest Cohen briefly
describes one. This would make it much easier for people to understand if they were unfamiliar with
college loan programs.
I found the conclusion and issue of "How to Make College Cheaper" to be convincing. Although,
there were some ambiguities in Steve Cohen's reasoning they did not affect my opinion on the
article. Cohen does get his points across very well with the facts he uses throughout the article. The
reasons are very convincing because he uses reputable sources such as the President of the United

The Field Of Statistics : Karl Pearson
The field of statistics is a standout amongst the most ordinarily utilized numerical fields as a part of
ordinary life and is available in games, media, and business organizations. The world depends on
insights to assemble essential data and to precisely anticipate data for different imperative purposes.
Nonetheless, the field of statistics is not as ancient as society may think it to be. It was initiated in
the mid Twentieth Century with the establishing of the primary statistics departments on the planet.
Karl Pearson, the admirable mathematician, is known by multiple people as the "father" of modern
statistics, a eugenist, publisher of books in the mathematic, science and philosophy field. Karl

While at the University College London, Pearson developed his original interest in statistics by
teaching graphical methods. In 1911, at the University College London, he found the first
Department of Applied Statistics, co–founded the Eugenics Department and created biometrics
("Karl Pearson (1857–1936): Mathematician, Biometrician and Eugenicist."). In the summer of
1885, Pearson founded The Men and Women Club, which he created for equality in society. This is
also where he met his wife Maria Sharpe, which he married in 1890 and had three children together
("History Workshop Journal."). Later in 1892, he published a book The Grammar of Science. In this
book he conferred that the scientific method was not explanatory, it was descriptive. The same
argument was then made about statistics, in relation to the importance of quantification for
medicine, biology and social science. Pearson then became extremely steadfast to the advancement
of a mathematical theory of evolution, which also led to him being a supporter for eugenics
("Department of Statistical Science."). Pearson then retired in 1933, he continued to study and write
until his death on April 27, 1936 ("Karl Pearson. Pearson Biography"). The world of modern
statistics would not be the same today if it weren 't for Pearson. Pearson was involved in measuring
correlations and fitting curves into data. This led him to create the correlation coefficient. This
answers the question, "how well does

schools are also part of this right in allowing adults to carry guns inside campus. But, Trump does
not have the permission to dismantle all gun–free zones the act of Congress takes the action towards

Should College Be A Campus Police?
Lately Brevard College was named one of the safest colleges in America, but the real question is are
we really safe at Brevard College? For a school that has a tuition of $38,000 and at least 800
students and the campus size of 120 acres of land, there is only a couple campus security guards
strolling around this campus and strolling an off campus resident. Two years ago, there was a
problem with some females getting stalked and almost assaulted on campus. Until this day, we have
yet to find the suspects because the suspects have gotten away because of only a one security guard
being on duty and that's not the only reason the suspects got away, it's because our security guards
are not capable enough to catch the suspects. Even though this is a small college, me and my
partners believe that Brevard College should invest in a campus police. I believe every college
should have at least campus policies regardless of the size of the campus. Every since 2007 at the
University of Virginia Tech, I think that's when college campuses should have been heavy on
security or campus police. The students on campus should be able to walk around knowing they are
safe whether it's in the daylight or nightfall. As a student of Brevard College who stays on campus, I
wonder about my safety every day. One of the most important aspect parents look for when they
send their child off to college is "Will my child be safe when l leave?" Me and my fellow colleagues

Why Should Students Carry Guns On Campus
Guns on College Campus Louisiana should not pass the law for students and faculty members to
have concealed weapons on college campuses. Our country and especially New Orleans, Louisiana
have major problems with gun violence. Students and faculty bringing concealed weapons inside of
a college building shall remain illegal because that is putting others in danger. Mass shooting events
on college campuses are happening too often since 2007. Students are not allowed to bring guns on
college campuses building because they could put others in danger. College campuses should not let
anyone carry concealed weapons inside of the building. It is illegal to carry guns on campuses for
students and faculty members to have on them, if they have license permits. Neither the students nor
the faculty should use guns because they bring violence on campuses and could kill someone. It is
unsafe for students to bring a gun inside of the classroom on campus premises. A student is unhappy
with their grades that was being received from the teacher and they get into an argument. The
teacher was being unfair to the students about their grades and assignments that led into altercation
between them. The students were misbehaving in the classroom because they were not following the
instructions for the assignment that the teacher gave them to do. Bringing guns inside of the
classroom is unsafe because someone can harm the faculty and other students. However, a student

The Importance Of Free Speech And The First Amendment
All the time, people are heard protesting about "Free Speech", and "The First Amendment". What
rights are really protected under the First Amendment according to our Constitution? The answer
may be shocking. In the United States of America, the concept of free speech is widely called upon
to reinforce the legality of offensive spoken words or actions. In reality, not all speech is protected
under the First Amendment. Sure, everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but where is the line
between what opinions are acceptable to be spoken of in public, and what is inappropriate or too
offensive. The true answer lies in the definition of the word public. While government run agencies
such as public universities have little they can do about what students say, private colleges have
virtually no requirements by law. Public universities have very little say in what students are
allowed to say or do so long as their speech and actions are reasonable. Reasonable is defined as, for
the duration of this essay, that they are not directly threatening to any person or group, they refrain
from using "fighting words", and they do not take part in slander or libel. Any restriction of
reasonable free speech by a public university is unconstitutional. While public universities have
requirements put upon them to allow most free speech, private colleges have no such rules. The only
requirements for any private college to allow free speech are those put upon themselves by contract,
or in few cases, put upon them by their state. Private colleges are private so that they may choose
which morals and ideals they put forward and deem important. Although most private universities
are not required to allow complete freedom of speech on their campuses, many add an assurance of
free speech or some variant of free speech in their handbook. Free Speech Zones have become a
popular solution to the ever growing problem of the combination of protesters and easily offended
people across the United States. These zones exist in many places and are especially prevalent on
college campuses. The intent of such zones is arguably good, to ensure that the purpose of
universities remains centered on learning. The constitutionality and

Civil disobedience is the act of going against the law and refusal to do what the government says. It

disobedience which is very good. He speaks on a lot of things that are wrong with the government
and the citizens. It was first published in 1889. There are so many acts of civil disobedience that are
interesting but this one catches a lot of people's eyes. It is the case of Emily Davison. She fought for

The Responsibility Of Dorm Directors
One of the number one priorities here at the college is to ensure that we are providing our students
with a safe and secure environment that is conducive for learning. At an institution that provides
Residence Halls for students, it is important to remember that the safety measures extended to those
residence halls also. According to Sokolow (2004), there are three questions that a risk manager has
to address when assessing risks, "can the risk can be avoided, can the risk be transferred, or if the
risk can be accepted" (p. 90). The purpose of this audit is to identify the policies and practices that
are in place that could potentially be a legal liability for the institution. In order to conduct this risk
assessment, we will utilize the three–category assessment: low risk bring searches, moderate risk of
personal property, and high risk of mental health awareness and violence (Sokolow, 2004, p. 88)
Searches
Part of the responsibility of Dorm Directors is to report any illegal activity that may occur on the
premises. A possible infraction may result in a dorm director or campus police performing a search
of the room. There have been numerous complaints from students that there have been illegal
searchers of their rooms. In some of these instances, the students were not present, and those who
were present stated that they did not grant permission for officers to search. The issue with this is
that in order for searches to occur, we have to ensure that they are

Founded 1352 by The Guild of Corpus Christi and The Guild of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Sister College – Corpus Christi College Oxford. Men and Women – Undergraduates 253 Postgraduates 220. Corpus Christi is unique in the university for being the only college founded by 'town' and not 'gown' – in other words established by town's people and not the ruling class or clergy. The Guild of Corpus Christi and the Guild of the Blessed Virgin Mary pooled resources and were granted a licence by Edward III to build what was the eighth Cambridge college, in 1352. City mayor reminds college of its roots The original court was modest and supported a master and two fellows. They would have studied theology and canon law, along with their responsibilities as chaplains to the guild. The town's people, led by the mayor, stormed the college in 1381, reminding it of its roots, protesting about the hated 'candle rents', levied upon its domestic properties. This led to further peasant protests that King Richard soon brought to a brutal conclusion. Trumpington Street Corpus is one of a cluster of impressive colleges and buildings facing Trumpington Street, the south approach road into central Cambridge. On the east side is Corpus and Pembroke while on the west side is the fabulous Neoclassical Fitzwilliam Museum along side Peterhouse and St Catherine's College (directly opposite Corpus). • 9. Campus Crime : The Dark Side Of The Ivory Tower Over the last two and half decades, campus crime as a social issue has come to the forefront of public attention and is regularly reported in both print and electronic media. Specific and general legislation has also been passed in order to prevent campus crime from occurring as well as to educate those who are either in danger of victimization or have the ability to prevent victimization and assure that justice is done. However, campus crime is not a new issue in regard to its occurrence, only in that it has finally attracted both public and media attention. Furthermore, Sloan III and Fisher (2011) suggest that this movement to recognize and prevent the occurrence of crime on college and university campuses (known throughout this book as the dark side of the ivory tower) did not pop up overnight. Instead, they argue that through a long and arduous process, four different activist groups were able to socially construct the problem as a proper and pertinent social issue, and influence legislation designed to curb campus crime, and hold those responsible, accountable for their action or inaction. Before exploring the process of constructing campus crime as a social issue, Sloan III and Fisher (2011) found it necessary to report on the history of campus crime in American universities as the majority of the public assumes that campus crime is a relatively new phenomenon when in fact, campus crimes has been a prominent (yet not very visible) issue since the founding of the ... Albeit students have more freedom to do whatever they wish to do on an open campus, students are developing a need to enroll in a college with a closed campus due to, all needs or wants being available on campus, less traffic, and the overall safety for students and faculty. Students who leave campus to go to retail stores for products can also find those goods on campus in places such as the café, book store, or gifts shops. Common needs such as poster boards, pencils, pens, and highlighters are always available to purchase in book stores so that students do not have to leave campus to buy necessary school supplies. Commodities such as restaurants are available around the clock. Many famous restaurants, though many being fast food, set up shops within college campuses. Students can enjoy a wide variety of options ranging from pizza to ethnic cuisines right there on campus all day long. Students can go to the recreational "rec" center where swimming pools, hot tubs, workout machines, and gaming stations are available at the students' disposal. • 47. A Transition Of Fascination And Fear Essay Introduction – A Transition of Fascination to Fear Historically change has been vital in the emergence of American higher education. John Thelin (2011) expresses "The single most change in American higher education at the end of the 19th century was that college going became fashionable and prestigious" (p. 156). Prior to WWII, the public romanticized college going as a means to promote social mobility. Throughout the evolution of higher education, individuals ' views transitioned from fascination to fear. A sense of fear was instilled in students as they became aware colleges were not exempt from violence. The transition–inspired legislation of the Clery Act, which puts practices into place to create safe communities. Has regulation of the Clery Act benefited student populations? Do higher education institutions exclude certain populations by complying with the act? Throughout this paper, I will address these questions and critically analyze the Clery Acts significance within higher education. The History and Amendments to the Clery Act Before enactment of the Campus Security Act, there had been a multitude of particularly violent crimes on college campuses, which threatened the security higher education institutions assured (101st United States Congress, 1990). Due to this fact, congress proposed a disclosure of campus security policy and campus crime. Campus Shootings Essay College Campuses in the Line of Sight We all hear about mass shooting where a number of people are killed and we pray that we are never caught in a situation like the one at Virginia Tech or Oikos University. But the likelihood that it happens at your school, your kids school, or your friends school is at an all time high. From 2000 to 2010 nearly 70 people were killed in college campus shootings in the United States. This number more than doubles the number of killing from the 25 years prior to 2000. Not only are their more shooting but there are a proliferating number of sexual assaults happening on college campuses, in 2009 alone the number of sexual assault on college campuses was nearly 2,600 (Arrigo 120). This combined with mass media coverage has generated passionate debates on how to best stop mass shootings and other violent crimes on college campuses. Many pro–gun activists have started to push for and endorse bills allowing students and faculty to conceal carry handguns on campuses. Campus–carry is a relatively new phenomenon and there is little to no evidence to corroborate the idea that it increases campus security. Those who have not gone through rigorous instructional courses, like police officers, will be unable to stop a mass shooting, sexual assaults, or other violent crimes on college campuses. Instead, allowing students to carry will increase crime rates on campuses and will result in more fatalities due to guns(Ultius). This is why students should not be ... The biggest and most important choice is which college to attend. Do you want to stay close to home or go far away? The biggest question is what size of college is right for you. My two top choices are University of Bluffton and University of Findlay. I think they are both great colleges but one is definitely a better fit for me. The University of Findlay is a better fit for me over University of Bluffton because it is close to home, but is still large enough to give me the large campus feel I am looking for in a college. The hardest part of going to college is the expenses today. Most students have to take out loans which leaves them in debt all of their lives. University of Bluffton's tuition is $44,008 ("CollegeSimply." ) which is slightly more than University of Findlay which costs $42,335 ("Cost of Attending the University of Findlay ." ). All the time dedicated to their sport takes away time to complete homework, eat, work, and rest. College athletes should receive compensation for the amount of time dedicated to their sport, for the amount of revenue brought into the university or college, to be able to better support themselves and their family and benefit from the profit made by apparel company contracts with the university or college. Playing a sport in college, especially at Division 1 schools are very time consuming between practicing and playing games. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) allows 20 hours of practice a week for athletes, but practices often last longer ("How do College Athletes..."). Collegiate athletes often do not have enough time to set aside for their classes. Many of these athletes are spending more time playing their sport than managing their schoolwork. If the athletes do not show up to every practice, then they tend to feel uncommitted and disincluded. According to an NCAA survey on college athletes, the most demanding sports are Division 1 and Division 2 baseball. Division 1 basketball and football are very demanding as well (O'Shaughnessy). The Effects Of Viral Load On Hiv Essay On November 10, 2016, a new report was released to the public about a special type of microchip that can test the amount of viral load of HIV in less than 30 minutes. This test can be completely self administered. The user can check the viral load amount in the bloodstream by placing a drop of their blood on the microchip, which looks similar to that of a USB drive. This microchip is then inserted into a computer, tablet, or other handheld device. The results can be achieved in less than 30 minutes, and many users had an answer in about 21 minutes with 95% accuracy. The current method requires sending blood to a laboratory and can take at least three days, if not longer, to detect the viral load present. This microchip can help to monitor those patients who are receiving treatment, but do not have access to local clinics. Researchers hope that this device can specifically help in Sub–Saharan Africa and other rural areas which may not have easy access to testing facilities nearby (Imperial College London: 2016). This new microchip received a lot of publicity for a few major reasons. While it is not currently commercially available, it provided a "proof of concept" for a point–of–care method for the detection of the viral load of HIV present. This is the first report of an on–chip detection of RNA via microchip. A few examples are The Second Amendment is not an unlimited right to own guns, more gun control laws would reduce gun deaths and more gun control leads to fewer suicides in the United States. The gun control category I am focusing on in this essay is, should teachers and students be able to carry firearms on a college campus. The idea of teachers and staff being able to carry firearms on a college campus has come up many times in the media recently due to the rise in mass shootings. Many states are now looking at this problem and voting on it. This topic is always heavily debated due to the many different sides and varying beliefs on gun control and safety. The NRA (National Rifle Association) has a heavy influence on the united states and who should be allowed guns and what legislation is passed. The gun control topic of firearms on a college campus has become politicized and is commonly drawn into political debates and has become a political tool for winning elections. How To Make College Cheaper Analysis In the article, "How to Make College Cheaper," Steve Cohen discusses how an average income family cannot afford the typical university or community college tuition. He describes key ideas on how to make college more readily available the average student in American. Although, in the article Steve Cohen uses some ambiguous language in his key reasons the conclusion to his issue is very convincing. In Steve Cohen article, "How to Make College Cheaper," he clearly states the issue and the conclusion. The descriptive issue is stated in the title, "Why or How to Make College Cheaper." Cohen states the conclusion later on in the article in the concluding paragraph. The conclusion is to invest in tuition deferment and by shifting the risk of student default from the government to the college. Thus, the issue and the conclusion could be stated as follows: College can be made cheaper by tuition deferment and shifting risk of student default to the college. ... If Cohen used more accurate additives his points would be more substantial. Instead of using the word traditional to describe loan programs I suggest Cohen briefly describes one. This would make it much easier for people to understand if they were unfamiliar with college loan programs. I found the conclusion and issue of "How to Make College Cheaper" to be convincing. Although, there were some ambiguities in Steve Cohen's reasoning they did not affect my opinion on the article. Cohen does get his points across very well with the facts he uses throughout the article. The reasons are very convincing because he uses reputable sources such as the President of the United States and the Governor of Wisconsin. I need a sentence for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Field Of Statistics : Karl Pearson The field of statistics is a standout amongst the most ordinarily utilized numerical fields as a part of ordinary life and is available in games, media, and business organizations. The world depends on insights to assemble essential data and to precisely anticipate data for different imperative purposes. Nonetheless, the field of statistics is not as ancient as society may think it to be. It was initiated in the mid Twentieth Century with the establishing of the primary statistics departments on the planet. Karl Pearson, the admirable mathematician, is known by multiple people as the "father" of modern statistics, a eugenist, publisher of books in the mathematic, science and philosophy field. Karl Pearson 's contributions to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While at the University College London, Pearson developed his original interest in statistics by teaching graphical methods. In 1911, at the University College London, he found the first Department of Applied Statistics, co–founded the Eugenics Department and created biometrics ("Karl Pearson (1857–1936): Mathematician, Biometrician and Eugenicist."). In the summer of 1885, Pearson founded The Men and Women Club, which he created for equality in society. This is also where he met his wife Maria Sharpe, which he married in 1890 and had three children together ("History Workshop Journal."). Later in 1892, he published a book The Grammar of Science. In this book he conferred that the scientific method was not explanatory, it was descriptive. The same argument was then made about statistics, in relation to the importance of quantification for medicine, biology and social science. Pearson then became extremely steadfast to the advancement of a mathematical theory of evolution, which also led to him being a supporter for eugenics ("Department of Statistical Science."). Pearson then retired in 1933, he continued to study and write until his death on April 27, 1936 ("Karl Pearson. Pearson Biography"). The world of modern statistics would not be the same today if it weren 't for Pearson. Pearson was involved in measuring correlations and fitting curves into data. This led him to create the correlation coefficient. This answers the question, "how well does ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Her parents always go around pestering her to be more open and talk to people, but it is not like they make it simple for her. It has gotten to the point that each question asked would fly through Ellie's ear, not even bothering to understand them. "How was your day today? Why can't you just talk to us like your brothers and sister? You don't see your siblings hide their thoughts do you? Let someone in!" Three siblings are too much to handle at times so it is not mind boggling to have one person in the family cower than stand up tall. Back in the 80's a person committing a crime could be a big impact in the news and reporters would talk about it the whole year meanwhile, in the present committing a crime is something usual to hear it every day. Allowing civilians to carry concealed weapons on public campuses is risking thousands of lives in the U.S. Guns should not be allowed in college campuses because instructors and students will doubt on continue with their duties, guns won't make people safer, and violent crimes will increase. Allowing the weapons on campuses is risking the continuation for all instructors and students on their duties for example, by them feeling intimidate and not able to concentrate on what they are doing. [For instance, Trump has declared he supports the right to carry firearms in all states enabling students, and visitors at universities acceptable to carry. In addition, elementary and middle schools are also part of this right in allowing adults to carry guns inside campus. But, Trump does not have the permission to dismantle all gun–free zones the act of Congress takes the action towards that decision (Lyons 90). By accepting this law the government is accepting danger to the students because now everyone can simply enter the building, and commit a catastrophe.] [In addition, nobody knows what effect can the right of carry guns will take on public universities. • 136. Should College Be A Campus Police? Lately Brevard College was named one of the safest colleges in America, but the real question is are we really safe at Brevard College? For a school that has a tuition of $38,000 and at least 800 students and the campus size of 120 acres of land, there is only a couple campus security guards strolling around this campus and strolling an off campus resident. Two years ago, there was a problem with some females getting stalked and almost assaulted on campus. Until this day, we have yet to find the suspects because the suspects have gotten away because of only a one security guard being on duty and that's not the only reason the suspects got away, it's because our security guards are not capable enough to catch the suspects. Even though this is a small college, me and my partners believe that Brevard College should invest in a campus police. I believe every college should have at least campus policies regardless of the size of the campus. Every since 2007 at the University of Virginia Tech, I think that's when college campuses should have been heavy on security or campus police. The students on campus should be able to walk around knowing they are safe whether it's in the daylight or nightfall. As a student of Brevard College who stays on campus, I wonder about my safety every day. One of the most important aspect parents look for when they send their child off to college is "Will my child be safe when l leave?" • 144. The Importance Of Free Speech And The First Amendment All the time, people are heard protesting about "Free Speech", and "The First Amendment". What rights are really protected under the First Amendment according to our Constitution? The answer may be shocking. In the United States of America, the concept of free speech is widely called upon to reinforce the legality of offensive spoken words or actions. In reality, not all speech is protected under the First Amendment. Sure, everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but where is the line between what opinions are acceptable to be spoken of in public, and what is inappropriate or too offensive. The true answer lies in the definition of the word public. While government run agencies such as public universities have little they can do about what students say, private colleges have virtually no requirements by law. Public universities have very little say in what students are allowed to say or do so long as their speech and actions are reasonable. Reasonable is defined as, for the duration of this essay, that they are not directly threatening to any person or group, they refrain from using "fighting words", and they do not take part in slander or libel. Any restriction of reasonable free speech by a public university is unconstitutional. While public universities have requirements put upon them to allow most free speech, private colleges have no such rules. The only requirements for any private college to allow free speech are those put upon themselves by contract, or in few cases, put upon them by their state. Private colleges are private so that they may choose which morals and ideals they put forward and deem important. Although most private universities are not required to allow complete freedom of speech on their campuses, many add an assurance of free speech or some variant of free speech in their handbook. Free Speech Zones have become a popular solution to the ever growing problem of the combination of protesters and easily offended people across the United States. These zones exist in many places and are especially prevalent on college campuses. The intent of such zones is arguably good, to ensure that the purpose of universities remains centered on learning. • 148. Essay On Emily Davison Civil disobedience is the act of going against the law and refusal to do what the government says. It is very common in many countries all over the world. Henry David Thoreau wrote a book on civil disobedience which is very good. He speaks on a lot of things that are wrong with the government and the citizens. It was first published in 1889. There are so many acts of civil disobedience that are interesting but this one catches a lot of people's eyes. It is the case of Emily Davison. She fought for the rights of women to vote in the United Kingdom. Davison went to jail on many occasions. Emily had a sad but interesting death that impacted a lot of people. October 20, 1909 she was in jail for a month for stone throwing at Radcliffe near Manchester and on November 19, 1910 one month for breaking windows in the House of Commons. She was arrested all of those times for throwing stones because her and other women would chain themselves to government buildings and throw stones through the windows to gain their attention. January 10, 1912 six months for setting fire to postal boxes at Holloway, London. Lastly on November 30, 1912 ten days for assaulting a vicar who she mistook to be David Lloyd George. Emily would do all of this just to win the rights of women being able to vote and get equal rights as men. Davison had a very interesting but tragic death. She died June 4, 1913 on a Wednesday. She got injured at an horse race called the Epsom Derby. Emily was standing by the white rail near Tattenham corner when a group of horses passed. She had on a trench coat and under it she had a flag in the WSPU colors of purple, white, and green tied around her body. • 152. Gun Control In College Gun Control Gun control is a major topic in today's society and it is broken into many subcategories that all have different arguments and views. A few examples are The Second Amendment is not an unlimited right to own guns, more gun control laws would reduce gun deaths and more gun control leads to fewer suicides in the United States. The gun control category I am focusing on in this essay is, should teachers and students be able to carry firearms on a college campus. I chose this since I am currently attending college and this could have an effect directly on me or ASU. The idea of teachers and staff being able to carry firearms on a college campus has come up many times in the media recently due to the rise in mass shootings. Many states are now looking at this problem and voting on it. This topic is always heavily debated due to the many different sides and varying beliefs on gun control and safety. The NRA (National Rifle Association) has a heavy influence on the united states and who should be allowed gun and what legislation is passed. The gun control topic of firearms on a college campus has become politicalized and is commonly drawn into political debates and has become a political tool for winning elections. Some states have already voted and taken action on this new idea and have allowed staff to carry guns on campuses and in cars parked and locked in secure parking lots. • 156. The Responsibility Of Dorm Directors One of the number one priorities here at the college is to ensure that we are providing our students with a safe and secure environment that is conducive for learning. At an institution that provides Residence Halls for students, it is important to remember that the safety measures extended to those residence halls also. According to Sokolow (2004), there are three questions that a risk manager has to address when assessing risks, "can the risk can be avoided, can the risk be transferred, or if the risk can be accepted" (p. 90). The purpose of this audit is to identify the policies and practices that are in place that could potentially be a legal liability for the institution. In order to conduct this risk assessment, we will utilize the three–category assessment: low risk bring searches, moderate risk of personal property, and high risk of mental health awareness and violence (Sokolow, 2004, p. 88) Searches Part of the responsibility of Dorm Directors is to report any illegal activity that may occur on the premises. A possible infraction may result in a dorm director or campus police performing a search of the room. There have been numerous complaints from students that there have been illegal searchers of their rooms. In some of these instances, the students were not present, and those who were present stated that they did not grant permission for officers to search. The issue with this is that in order for searches to occur, we have to ensure that they are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
