Despite the fact that divorce is discussed in almost any sociology or anthropology book, no unified
explanations for family instability are available. Levinson and Malone (1980: 69) state that
"anthropologists have offered little in the way of trustworthy, universal explanations for divorce."
The differences in cultures, traditions, and practices among societies make it almost impossible to
offer general explanations for family instability. The widely held belief is that when a significant
amount of money or property is exchanged, the marriage is more stable. This belief is supported by

Among them, bride price or bride wealth is one of the most frequently used methods. In other
words, the most common type of marriage payment is that the husband or his family pays the
bride�s family. The least common method of payments is probably dowry, which is paid to the
bride from her family. Other types of practices in these societies include gift exchange, bride
service, token bride price, sister or female relative exchange. Levinson and Malone (1980: 73) also
point out that one other way of obtaining a spouse is known as bride theft, which is defined as ". . .
the forcible abduction of a woman for the purpose of marriage, without the knowledge or consent of

LITERATURE
After looking at the definition of marriage and the different types of marriage transactions, I began
my research with some cross–cultural literature. According to Minturn et al. (1969: 308), a bride

That is one bit of information that is impossible for someone to find out no matter how he
researches. A person's final thoughts are the most complex because they are the accumulation of all
of one's life and decisions. One can only wonder what regrets the deceased came up with or what
they might have wanted to do differently. The little details are often the most challenging to gather,
and even when they are gathered they can still be difficult to understand. The experiences one goes
through in life can be hard for another to understand if they have never been through a similar
experience. A challenge arises for writers to try to comprehend what the deceased experienced in
life, and then to convey it so their readers can understand it as well. Even if immense description is
provided, a reader might still not be able to imagine what a certain experience is like. For example,

Emily says to the druggist "I want poison" (p.94) She says this twice which is important to this text.
If you read further in that passage the writer has taken careful consideration to make that passage
very detailed. By the end of the paragraph the author has strongly alerted us that Emily will kill
something bigger than rats, something like a human. The impact of this short phrase "I want poison"
in the story as well as not telling the druggist what she wants the poison for, leaves the reader to
draw his or her own conclusions. In the case of the town, they thought that Emily would kill herself.
Another detailed passage in this story is when Emily is buying several men's items such as a toilet
set, and a man's suite as well as having the pieces of the toilet set monogrammed with the initials
H.B. At the point in the story when Emily is purchasing these men's items, Homer has not been seen
at all by anyone since he was last seen entering Emily's house one evening several days before.
However the town's people presume that Homer has simply left town for a while but that they are
still getting married. This event is detailed foreshadowing because it allows the reader to ask why
would Emily buy men's things if he has not been seen in some time? And reflecting on the answer.
One of the more subtle repetitive foreshadowing phrases in this story is "iron grey" (p.95) which is

the formidable pressure as well. Because of this, parents view their daughters as a burden (Kishawr,
2005). Increasingly families in India have more of a desire to birth sons instead of daughters. Umar
(1998,) explains this dynamic further saying, "Indian social system give considerable importance to

families and economic inequality in relation to poverty of husband and In–laws. In India, marriage
is considered the foundation of social formation and is heavily based on Hindu religious traditions.

Abstract
This research explores the literature across cultures on death and dying in order to highlight the
impact of culture on reactions to death and the dying process. A theoretical framework is
established, using Elizabeth Kubler–Ross's five stages of dying, followed by a succinct discussion of
the reactions and attitudes toward death and the dying process of four cultures (Buddhist, Hindu,
Native American and American). By illustrating the different reactions and attitudes toward death of
these cultures, it is revealed that through increased cultural understanding health care workers can
provide more personalized care to the dying.
