3. The act or process of
imparting or acquiring
general knowledge and of
developing the powers of
reasoning and judgment.
4. The link between education and social
benefits has long been recognized, as far
back as Ancient Greece when Aristotle and
Plato pointed out that education is central
to the well-being of society. More recently,
in the past few decades, research has
supported this conventional wisdom,
revealing that education not only enables
individuals to perform better in the
labourMARKET, but also helps to improve
their overall health, promote active
citizenship and contain violence.

6. Today education is very important for success,
Education is the movement from darkness to light, A
man without education is like a building without
foundation, A teacher takes a hand opens a mind and
touches a heart, Education's purpose is to replace an
empty mind with an open one.
Education is a journey not a destination, never
dream for a success but study and work for it. But
don't depend on others. Gaining education enhances
an individual to live a respectful life in the society.
My formula is (Education+Work=Success).
7. Education is a fundamental human right and essential for the
exercise of all other human rights. It promotes individual
freedom and empowerment and yields important development
benefits. Yet millions of children and adults remain deprived of
educational opportunities, many as a result of poverty.
Normative instruments of the United Nations and UNESCO lay
down international legal obligations for the right to education.
These instruments promote and develop the right of every
person to enjoy access to education of good quality, without
discrimination or exclusion. These instruments bear witness to
the great importance that Member States and the international
community attach to normative action for realizing the right to
education. It is for governments to fulfill their obligations both
legal and political in regard to providing education for all of
good quality and to implement and monitor more effectively
education strategies.
Education is a powerful tool by which economically and socially
marginalized adults and children can lift themselves out of
poverty and participate fully as citizens.

9. The Government of India has taken an initiative toward
improving the level of education across the country.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has announced of a
commission which will be headed by an eminent
educationist, and will be assisted by experts from the
fields of higher, technical, medical, secondary,
elementary, vocational and other sectors of education.
The commission, which will suggest ways to the
Government to improve all levels of education, will also
have inputs from the reports of the National Knowledge
Commission, the Yashpal Committee and the Valiathan
Committee. However, experts feel that the commission
should also include foreign experts, as the sector is now
collaborating with many foreign bodies due to the
globalization of education.

11. The leaders of our freedom movement realized the
importance of girls’ education and had put it as a
prime agenda for national development. However,
when India attained independence some 60 years
ago, it was a formidable challenge that the new
government had to face. The national female literacy
rate was an alarmingly low 8.9 per cent, Gross
Enrolment Ratio (GER) for girls was 24.8 per cent at
primary level and 4.6 per cent at the upper primary
level (in the 11 – 14 years age group). Social and
cultural barriers to education of women and lack of
access to organized schooling, had to be addressed
immediately.
12. India is perhaps one of the few countries which established a sound
statistical system centuries ago. In the case of education statistics,
‘"Educational Development in India" dates back to 1870. Since
educational planning and administration for elementary education is a
state subject, the primary responsibility for collection, collation
tabulation, analysis and transmission of educational data therefore lies
with education departments of the states/UTs. The educational
statistics in India are collected on 100 percent count basis. The data is
collected through the teachers working in the same school for which
data is recorded through a survey form. The data collected from the
schools is not validated at any level. At some levels, the aggregated
data is compared with the previous years to determine if there are
violent fluctuations which are difficult to explain. Some adjustments
are made to fine tune the aggregated data but there is no record of the
nature and magnitude of the adjustment. This aspect has been
criticized by many educational experts.
The state/UT level data is aggregated and reported at the national level
in the prescribed formats. Collection, compilation, analysis and
publication of the national data are coordinated by the Department of
Education, Ministry of HRD. The MHRD has a Planning, Monitoring and
Statistics Division which coordinates with various states. Additional data
are provided by other ministries/departments like Census of India,
Department of Labour, University Grants Commission (Higher education
sector), Indian Council of Medical research etc.
