2. Film Language Mise-en-
scene
• Mise-en-scène describes the stuff in the frame and
the way it is shown and arranged. There are four
general areas: setting, lighting, costume and
staging.
• Denotation- refers to literal meaning of something
e.g. “the snake is scaly”
• Connotation- refers to the associations that are
connected to something e.g. “the snake is
dangerous”
3. These clips are set indoors. The interior includes, bedding
and furniture, clearly laid out like a hotel room, with the
bathroom just a little visible.
4. The curtains in the background are of an older style, this
film based on a true story that happened in the 1960s
The lighting is more natural, with the light coming from
the outside and being reflected through the curtains.
5. The actors are dress in old style suits and on actor has an
old style pistol. The check printer, on the bottom clip is
very old, and one that would have been used back in the
1960s.
6. In this clip one of the actors is wearing a pair of old style glasses that have sun protectors
and he is also holding the old time pistol.
7. This clip shows the exterior from the interior point of
view. When the curtain is pulled, you can see tree
branches, which symbolizes that they are on a higher
ground, possibly second or third floor.
8. The cars in this scene fits the setting as they are older cars that were driven
back in the 1960s. The wardrobe worn by the actors were what most people
wore back in the 1960s
9. In this scene, the kitchenware and items from room service dates back
to the 1960/1970’s. There is an old television in the bottom picture.
10. In this scene you can see some of the hotel room, with basic hotel room
decorations like the pairings on the wall and the beddings.
11. The light coming through the curtains imply that it is daytime outside. The
kitchenware in the scene indicates that whomever was staying in the room was
there for quite a while and did not have it cleaned.
12. In this clip, you can see that the actors are indeed in a hotel. The door has a “Do
not disturb” sign.
13. In this clip you can see the actors body language where he bends and puts his
hands on his knees and has to take a seat on the bed as he hold his head. This is
where he was feeling a bit of relief and confusion at the same time.
14. The actor’s facial expression shows that he is shocked by something that he is
thinking about, he is also wearing hos old time glasses that comes with the sun
protectors.
15. The wallet and the contents in it are all old, the wallet is an old style wallet
with the clip pin. The contents of the wallet, like the old time coca cola co card.
17. The below are shots from the exterior of the hotel room. The window is a
sliding window, one mainly used in the olden days.
18. Here is the actor running off, with old cars from the 60s and 70s in the
background.
19. Setting- This scene was set in a hotel room
Lighting- the lighting was manipulated by the light coming in from
the curtains, with a natural lighting effect
Costume- the actors were dressed in 1960s clothing, with old hats,
watches, glasses and wallet.
Positioning and space- the actors were placed primarily in the
middle of each shots, where the props in the background can be
seen well.
Acting, Expression & body language- one actor pointed this gun
towards the other, showing that they were not acquaintances and
there was no trust.
