Analysis of “Catch me if you can”(2002) opening titles.

The opening of he 2002 film “catch me if you can” by Steven Spielberg
staringLeonardo Di’Caprio is shown in a classic thriller style, we do not see any
of the characters just black stick like figures which are used to portray them. As
the clip starts we are shown a fade in of and animated sky with the title of the
company ‘Dreamworks’ in a type of font, which uses vertical lines to create some
of its letters. As the vertical lines reach from the top to the bottom of the screen.
As the character, which is meant to represent, Leonardo Di’Caprio has his path
blocked by them. This linked into the story line of the film as a fleeing Di’Caprio
is faced with several problems and these problems block his way.

As the clip continues we se a series of names in the same vertical line font, this is
a persistent theme throughout the clip showing us that more than one or two
obstacles stand in the way of Di’Caprio’s escape, all of the colours used in the
scene are bright and as we are meant to see Di’Caprio as the good guy. When
Tom Hanks’ name appears on the title scene the colour suddenly turns to a
darker colour types, this represents that the Tom Hanks character is the bad
character and wants to capture or kill the Leonard Di’Caprio character.

From the way the stick man characters are dressed we can see that this film is
set in the 1940s-1950s as the stick men have trilby hats and trench coats. We can
tell it’s a thriller as the characters are rushing and chasing each other. Even in
this title sequence we see that there is conflict between the two as when they are
going through the airport scene Tom Hanks stick man has a hand gun that is
clear for us to see this represents that the conflict between the two.

As the scene continues we see Leonardo Di’Caprio rushing through an airport
this tells us that the name ‘catch me if you can’ has relevant meaning and the
whole title scene now makes sense.
